Senator Amy Klobuchar to be vetted for Vice President

"Other election news to Amy Klobuchar Is being vetted for Vice President though? I imagine she'll be one of a few candidates so this in no way means she will be the pick but everyone speculating about it on social media. I'm GonNa vote for Joe Biden because trump is not an option. No matter who the picket I have my favorites. But it's nothing is a deal breaker in this election for me. So you know it's funny for me obviously like the idea of Amy Klobuchar. Vp off as thrilling but on the flip side You started this morning. Agm facebook. I was reading about it. That a Biden named ASC to lead his climate task force. That feels like a huge. That feels like a huge huge signal to progressives that he's GonNa take that seriously that gives me a lot of hope and A lot of positive feelings. Ya same me to it. Really sort of puts forth the idea of the Big Toe Party and that we need all progresses and moderates and conservative Democrats at the table exactly Because the you know we're just fighting against this one small faction of the Republican Party which is trump base. And they're just insane and we can't have that so I am glad I. I'm glad that he picked Kluber Shar an John Kerry or not of AFC and John Kerry to head up the climate task force you know. She is the architecture of the green new deal. John Kerry was the architect the Paris Climate Accord. So right there. You've got just so much incredible experience in so many amazing ideas and I think he's really really open to bringing the progressives into into the party. So I'm I'm like you. I'm hopeful with that with that news as well. Yeah and it wasn't just an ASC but is also the CO founder of the Sunrise Movement. Which is a huge youth climate organization? So that is a huge unity task force for me. And I'm I'm really happy about that. Greatness news yet and I'm and I know his he's putting together a Cova Task Force. He has already. And I'm hoping that as he continues to put together these task forces that he continues to just build dislike mega of all different walks of the Democratic Party. And and and you know just make it. So everybody is represented Absolutely I think if everybody feels represented one way or another. That's the way we move forward. Not everyone's going to be happy all the time but but you can have both inclusivity in compromise existing in the same space. I think So yeah that's that's that's great news and just the fact that there will be a woman. Vp is is

"Next prices from Daniel in Boston. Is there something you've always wanted to do and now are able to something you haven't previously had time for in your busy schedules? Well actually What I've had a chance to do that I haven't in the past is I've been able to get on the phone and talk to so many people that I've wanted to connect with and and learn from and and speak with and talk about what's going on and so I've spent a Lotta time in and getting people on the telephone. I see we just randomly call people who have written to us and who Ask questions and just to find out how they're doing what's going on in their lives right. Now how are they dealing with this? This basically Self Quarantine and because you know it's really a difficult thing for people who are alone particularly elderly folks but also you see. There's a lot of data now that young people between the ages of of eighteen and and thirty five or having real difficulties dealing with the fact that they find themselves being isolated in ways where they were starting off in a job and they're not able to keep that job now or they've been laid off before they began or they began and they've been laid off and they're worried about and they're having to make judgments about paying their student debts and a whole range of things so what I've been able to do is just reach out and talk to people like I used to do on a rope line when you do a speech you get out and talk to. Folks is not quite as satisfying. But I've been able to also pick up the phone and call a lot of the people around the country and around the world. I haven't had a chance to spend that much time in the last year and a half doing and whether it's world leaders or or close friends to get their sense of what they think we should be doing going into and coming out of this God. Awful pandemic have gotten to read more on a regular basis than I had before. I read a lot of political history. Well I've been reading too. I actually finally got to resolve Michelle Obama's biography right pretty ale is pretty good and then and I saw Jill is having coming out I notice that and I And so anyway I but mostly for me. It's been so interesting because our whole family are 'cause abigail came to see John after he got out of the hospital. So we're all somehow together so like you. I think my daughter Some her friends. It's really hard as you said they were alone until you hear these stories through her and in some ways it's such a gift that I have that view of the world of what's going on in addition to knowing cheese in a chat group that watches tiger change every week and various other things that are going on But one of the things we did we also. I'm trying to get all three of us to clean one room at a time. I know we got down to the basement and suddenly my husband is like there's a lot of dust down here and you know. I did her corona virus which he intended was fully recovered. The survivors came back. What one of the last things I'll say is that one of the great things we've been able to do and try to turn everything from negative to positive but every single day I I'm on the phone with all of my my my five grown grandchildren range in eighth grade to senior law. School and And I get to talk to them. And they're they're fully engaged doing things. I've won out. My one is going to be a sophomore pan as making mask and she's Handing them out. I got another one. Who IS Finnigan who's deeply involved in trying to organize young people to get engaged and then she's part of this or larger organization and my granddaughter. Who's graduating how we're supposed to be a commencement speaker? Columbia Law School this year. But it's got to be virtual now but she and her boyfriend put together a a site website. How you can make sure you can know what you're eligible for in the in the cures act and it's really been gotten a lot of wide publicity and I mean my publicity Viewership and so so. They're all doing something positive. And then you know it's It is frustrating. Not being able to get out. I'm not left our home or yard But the fact is is. There's You you get a sense of how many people are out there watching what they're doing for other people. Well let me tell you I wouldn't be the nominee. Had you not endorse me? You one Minnesota for me. No I really mean it. I know I want and I appreciate your friendship. Look I. I can't thank you enough for doing this episode with me. Thank everyone who turned in and I really like to have you back in the next month or so because no would have done more to try to figure out how we can have. Our democracy function election at the same time. We're going through this crisis you've and I think it's worthwhile for them for the public to understand what can be done. What has to be done for democracy to function so anyway stay tuned for an announcement on On Who our next guest is going to be. In the meantime stay healthy. Stay safe everybody and Amy Thank you I love you. Thank you for all your down. Tricia I.

"Senator Amy Cobra Jars a great friend. Amy is a Senator Bennett Towel to leader for the moment she got to the Senate. She served the state of Minnesota for a long time. She's a former colleague of mine in the Senate and she's a friend and I'd like to welcome a- Senator Coburn Dr to the show good to say. Y- does does everything we'd be doing this. We got television studios in our libraries and basements here. So look we are all of us have had a friend or roller effective by Cova nineteen. But it's very personal for you. Can you tell us about how it's affected your family? Yeah you know I think Nolan everything's it's going to happen to you until it happens and in our case My husband we have no idea how he got. It got very very sick and he ended up with the temperature of over one hundred for ten days. Ocoee knew when he started to get sick something was wrong and so thankfully he filed the rules. He didn't go to his faculty meeting. Like Joe is a teacher and he can go that day. He didn't go to thing. I had at work and resolve that a lot of people didn't get sick and he stayed in the apartment. I kept calling him everyday from Minnesota in he was in Washington saying. Hey what's going on? And he kept saying well. I think still sick and it was sort of a guy thing you would do anything about it. Finally after about eight days I made him go to the emergency room. And that's when they found out that he had severe pneumonia bad he. His oxygen level was down to seventy which is really dangerous. Eckermann the hospital. It took six days to get the test back by cabins so many people in our country and I had the experience that I never thought would happen to our family. He's only fifty two. He's really healthy. You know that and I finally he just turned it around on the last day in what I learned from that is. You can't be there you know. I couldn't be there to hold his hand on really bad. The nurse has to hold up the phone to his ear. I can't hug those healthcare workers and took care of them. I haven't even been able to meet them except a tarp over the phone and so many people have it so much worse now. Joe Because I know you've talked to those healthcare workers there they are. You know you're not on someone's dying in there. The last wants to talk to them and it's the most lonely horrific disease and that's why I'm so devoted to your plans to give us out of this. We should have had more testing. We know this got screwed up by the administration are we should have been much more smart right away. He should've been with how he handled this. But now we can't lose any more time and we gotta lead and push for the testing in the back scene and to get America working again. I really think you're right. Look and Jill. Censor her love. You know how much she thinks your husband. I mean they at all what the base they'd hang together sit together and and but it scared to live in. Hell Outta her and US too but you know I can't imagine what it's like. I've been through some tough times. But at least with notable exceptions have been a situation where I've been able to be there and hold the hand and hold the hand but when you're at a distance and you can't. We're hearing so many stories when we're doing these these roundtables these town halls about people talking about how they you know the doctors the nurses holding the phone up to their. You know their husband or way for their mother. The father who is an extremist. And just saying goodbye. We've been sort of absent in terms of the testing. The I mean the idea that all the things the president said about it is not necessarily just as I was walking down and do this. Television was on and there was a quote from trump saying. Well the governor's got to do the testing governors have to do the testing. I mean my Lord. I don't know what he needs. I mean the idea that we haven't made the kind of effort that we can make en- should be making you know he has the ability as you know under the under the wartime legislation quote unquote. I mean I was there when we were in this last downturn economic downturn which is nothing like this but it was bad in. I saw lead those efforts to not just make sure the money got out there but to make sure it was spent right and that's one of the that are really really bothers me right now. Is You have small businesses. That aren't getting the funding. They need and screw upset. Are Going on. And that's why I think you've got the immediate getting the protective equipment in the testing. That then you've got the long term. Which is we need a leader to lead us out of the economic problems long after we get the testing when when you have no respect for government to begin with it's awful hard to make government work with the grace of God goodwill neighbors. We're going to get something done here. But I mean my heart goes out to all those folks who are so many people suffered. But but we're going to give us that sense that you have Which is marked your whole life from your own losses of empathy is something that we are missing right now in the White House and I was thinking of this as I was. I got up. This morning was looking forward to talking with you. what you did once to someone. You never even knew one of my friends who had been out in Minnesota and to her husband had hoped with an event that you and I did together and then her husband got suddenly very sick and you didn't even never meet him and he had three girls and he died and when I called you to thank you for coming to Minnesota I told you the story and I said maybe WANNA write a note to his without. She's a very good friend and he said No. I'll call her collar and I just think about this with all the people that we're losing right. Now what did you do? Joe Biden you call. There happened to the first day. When she was coming back from her job she had gone back to work and she answered her. Cell Phone. You said it was you and she started to cry. And you said pullover pullover and then you gave her your personnel number because you said you knew it was like to lose a spouse on and I think that story to me is all about you but also about what we need in this country right now. We need confidence to run this in a big way. Get that money out but we also need a president that's able to lead and to even if it's virtually hold people's hands and our not seeing that right now in the White House. Will you know what you and I've talked a lot about? You know the showed restoring the soul of America where we're getting to see soul. Amac look at all the heroes out there. Look at all the ordinary people doing extraordinary extraordinary things extraordinary things. The people who in fact You know just stock the grocery self of the People. Who are you know? They're they're making virtually no money. They're making minimum wage. They're out there. The first responders the people are showing up. They're not I mean it just makes you so damn proud to be an American America showing his soul now and And I hope and God's name we remember this when when we beat this thing and we're putting the country back together. Look moving away from Corona virus. I WanNa ask you something. That many people might not know about you. Before you were a senator You had even ventured into politics. You had a particularly challenging experience given birth to your daughter and you took that experience straight to the Minnesota state legislature and helped pass a new law. Yeah I think so. Many people something happens to them and it just they realize I can make a change that could make the world better and what happened was unexpected normal pregnancy. And then when she was born as she couldn't swallow and the nurses come running in. They say she can't swallow something's wrong. They thought she had tumor. They didn't know what was wrong and She ended up being in intensive care for a week and back then they had a rule in place of the companies did Kicked out in twenty four hours even though she was in intensive care. And I'd been up all night in Jon up all.

Elizabeth Warren's Presidential Bid Comes to an End

"Senator Amy Klobuchar former South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Brundige and former New York City mayor. Mike Bloomberg have all called it quits and today. We're adding Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to that list. I will not be running for president in twenty twenty but I guarantee I will stay in the fight for the hardworking folks across this country have gotten short into the stick over another. That's been the fight of my life and it will continue to be so warrants progressive policy driven campaign caught fire last fall making her an early favorite to win the nomination but she had a disappointing showing in the first elections in the primary season. Including this week Super Tuesday with more on the rise and fall of Warren's candidacy we're joined by Wall Street Journal reporter Tarini Party Tarini. Last fall senator. Warren was one of the front runners for the Democratic nomination but today she became the last remaining woman among the top tier candidates drop out. How expected was this announcement at this point. Given what we saw on Super Tuesday Warren was essentially left with no choice. But to drop out there was all choose facing a lot of pressure because she didn't win a single state she came third in her home state of Massachusetts. And so you know as this race drags out with Joe Biden on one side and Bernie Sanders on the other. The more candidates who stay in the longer the Democratic primary could become. And that's something that party leaders are trying to avoid They WANNA be trump and so they think that the field should sort of consolidate And so they can have a nominee sooner rather than later and she just didn't see a path forward a viable path forward. She did not end. You know ahead of Super Tuesday. Her staff had said that they were looking at a contested convention as one of the ways that were left for her to essentially be the Democratic nominee. They were hoping that she would pick up enough delegates on Super Tuesday to make that case but she didn't get that far and at this point. She said she just saw no path forward. Let's talk about the rise and fall of her candidacy. Tarini people were talking about her back in two thousand sixteen. When Hillary was running right she chose not to run in two thousand sixteen. And this time around you know. She started off with a few missteps She really did get her footing back. She focused her campaign on Ground Game Organization. She built out a huge campaign that focused on raising money online That really Invested in field organizers in in the early states An early on she did start getting a lot of traction. You know if you go back to the late summer early fall. She was starting to become the front runner in this primary. And then that slowly started That's that's slowly. Went away as more questions about her health. Care plan started. Cropping up she eventually put out a Medicare her own version of Medicare for all And you know wasn't really able to sell that both to moderate voters and progressive voters which she said today in her press conference was interesting. She said that when she started out she was told that there were two lanes in the Democratic primary the the Progressive Lane and the The moderate lane and Joe Biden would be the front runner in the moderate Lane and Bernie Sanders was in coming on the Progressive Lane. She was told she said that there was no other path. And she said she Set at the time that she didn't believe that that she thought that she could change things and she said today that that she was wrong It seems based on the way that this primary has played out who among those remaining candidates Former Vice President Biden or Vermont Senator Sanders Might Benefit from Warren's exit. So we'll have to see you know if she decides to endorse. She said today that she's going to take some time to think. And figure things out you know a lot of her supporters. Are you know more progressive? And if you in that sense they could be. You know they could move to Bernie Sanders but she also does have a lot of college educated women who aren't necessarily you know the Bernie Sanders Type of voter so she could. You know some Some of her supporters could also back Joe Biden Tarini. Warren's departure leaves two white men in their seventies competing to run against president trump another white man in his seventies. What are we to make of the fact that this was historically diverse. Field has whittled down to this. It was historically diverse. We had six women. If you know if you're including Tulsi Gabbard and Marianne Williamson. We had six women running Tulsi Gabbard is obviously still in the race but has not gained any traction she elizabeth. Warren was the you know the the last top tier woman still running. She sort of addressed that in her in her press conference one of the hardest parts of this is all those all those little girls. We're going to have to wait four more years. That's going to be hard. What affected Warren. Have on the two thousand presidential campaign and we'll see continue to influence it going forward. I think she will continue to have Influence and be a big voice especially if she decides to endorse either Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden. Going forward how they bring up some of her policy ideas and whether they choose to incorporate those in their own campaign that will be interesting to

"It's awesome United States with former vice president Joe Biden's White House campaign received a dramatic boost last night at what is seen as a crucial time in the United states his rivals Amy clover shell and P. puja jab fellow moderates who have now dropped out of this rates the race to be the next presidential candidate for the Democrats they've now endorse Joe Biden ahead of the crucial super Tuesday primaries seen as strategic this move to block fellow candidate Bernie Sanders I spoke only to sherry bebitch jeffe a a professor of the practice of public policy communication at the university of southern California and political analyst about these recent developments so who's out who's in and what's the strategy senator Amy clover shore of Montana Beijo overwork objections and mayor Pete moody judge and each one of those three have announced that they are endorsing Joe Biden watching this Donna Xing comeback for Joe Biden he seemed to have one in every category in South Carolina and this momentum of support has been growing yes I think it's it's sort of a coalition of many factors not the least of which is that the moderate wing of the Democratic Party alder weighing of the Democratic Party realized that very Sanders who isn't really a Democrat he is a democratic socialist he is an independent senator looked like that Bernie was gonna run away with the nomination and there was a great nervousness on the part of the party elders that he would lose to Donald Trump this support to was also about a Mike Bloomberg who seem to have a quite a rocky start too late to come up in the campaign trail and not doing really well and he's debates it is quite it just doing what he is also under attack by criminal justice reformers by black lives matter by other minority groups for a program called stop and frisk he's also been a jacked for shall we say not being supportive of women let's pick up on that point about black voters because no other candidate except Joe Biden has received the sort of endorsement that is needed from the African American so there is another category where he's doing incredibly well exactly the first two elections the Iowa caucuses in New Hampshire and New Hampshire primary or fly in stages population is at least ninety percent white South Carolina gave a boost to Joe Biden partially because sixty percent of the electorate was African American the endorsement of an icon in black politics a congressman in black politics led to black voters to focus on by him and again looking ahead to stupid shoes day this is the final chance to help Joe Biden all these endorsements for his much needed support but we still have in the race Mike Bloomberg and we have Elizabeth Warren let me say this about Michael Bloomberg I believe he's pushing half a billion dollars in expenditures and he has nothing to show for it at this point and he looks weak in the big super Tuesday states the debate is when will he decide he must get out of the race remember he got into the race because he said that Biden was too weak and he couldn't overcome Bernie Sanders and that would mean that the Democrats would lose to Donald Trump well that argument doesn't fly anymore there are Democrats who just complain to me just think with that money might have done Bloomberg put it in in other races which is an interesting and analysis so what happens after Tuesday if that Bijan overtakes Bloomberg could we see Michael Bloomberg getting behind Joe Biden to question that question needs to be asked of Michael Bloomberg he said two things one quote I'm in it to win it and quote but that was well before Joe Biden started lining up the significant endorsements Bloomberg has said time and time again no matter who the democratic nominee is I will support him or her and that means money ID also said that he would use his money to help Democrats up and down the ballot but is one of my friends pointed out today Michael Bloomberg has an ego as big as San Francisco it's going to be very hard for him to leave the stage yes and I was talking to the professor there who was giving us an update as to who is slowly becoming the front runner in that race in the

"The woods. Well he gave up. Ardian moved here. We got him. Lucky us well. You just bought a house for one hundred sixty five million dollars but granite countertops is that above ground pool. Which is all right. Does that happen under Bernie Sanders? Is that legal? Look how socialist are we getting? I just want to know not that. I got that kind of money. Here's the thing. There are a lot of people who have been called socialist over the course of our history. FDR was called so Carl Drew Socialists. Every he calls himself associates. Well you know he. He does sometimes. He calls himself the Social Democrats sometimes. He calls himself a democratic socialist but the label is not what's important. I think what is important is what is he fighting for. These ideas like Medicare for all like college for All. These are not radical ideas. They're actually the same ideas that a lot of other countries in the world that are pure countries have implemented so the idea of government coming in as the great equalizer of opportunity is actually something that Republicans have decided. They're going to call. Socialist throughout the history of our time. Medicare called it social social security social. It's it's a form of equalizing -tunities there's nothing wrong with it to my view a certain amount of socialism. You need a next economy. What people worry about is he's going to take it to a different place and also let me ask about one. Less thing for all he was for Medicare for all Pete has medicare for all who want it. That sounds more reasonable. Tell me why that's not. Tell me why the Democrats best issue is healthcare. Seems like we're playing with fire giving trump a talking point. If you're going to outlaw employer-based Medicare which more than half the people have. Why are you giving the talking point? Democrats are going to take away your medic. Your House sponsor for all bill and I believe a lot of convincing to do people. Well actually no. We have a lot of convincing pundits to do but the American people believe in Medicare for all seven and ten. Not when you tell them you take. The employer base is going to be outlawed. No actually that's not true. Well it is true that it goes down only until you ask the next question and say. Do you like your insurance company or do you like your doctor. If you knew that you had your doctor would you still want private insurance? Everyone says knows your doctor was. You wouldn't like him and that's just an all right. Let me ask everybody about this race and Michael Bloomberg first of all he was insulting trump the other day God it so amazing.

"You must be feeling very good this week in great. You're having a good week. Tell me about something that I've been reading about lately that there is a myth of the Bernie Bros. I we had this image. I must admit I did too. Doesn't look like me. No but you know that it was mostly these younger white men and I. I read the statistics. And no in fact Bernie does worse with white men than anybody. And it's more women who are form more Latinos. How did we get it wrong? Twitter twitter. I mean I do think. Twitter is a big part of it. People look at that and think it means everything right but Bernie. Sanders has assembled the most diverse coalition there is. He is energizing young people. He's got tons of women of color. Got Tons of people of color more broadly but he is also playing to a forgotton group of blue collar workers who really believe he's GonNa fight for them and that combination of this very diverse coalition of voters have not turned up before that frankly any other candidate would be thrilled to have this kind of coalition. He's got them but he is also speaking to a lot of people that really feel like he will fight for them. I mean just in two thousand sixteen. We Lost Michigan for the first time in twenty eight years. Democrats Lost Michigan. We lost Wisconsin for the first time in thirty two years. Guess who wants seventy one of seventy two counties in Wisconsin. It was Bernie Sanders. So when you look at the appeal of Bernie Sanders. I think it is really unusual to have somebody who can do both things really build that broader base but also played to these trump some of them trump vote. Yes there is a trump Bernie crossover. There always has been. But here's what troubles me about. This three quarters of the country say they think their life is going to be better in a year and the economy's going to be better. Clinton used to always say elections are about the future of his theme song. Don't stop thinking about tomorrow okay. So if people think the world is going to get better. Is that a good time for? Is that good? Fertile ground for a revolution is that the time doesn't sound like people want a revolution under that condition. Well people want their lives to be better in a year and I don't think many people want to spend their their time thinking that life is not going to get better at. That's a you don't always hear that stat under president but listen to also the other stat. Which is we have the worst inequality since the nineteen twenties. We've got three people. Two of whom live in my state of Washington who have the same amount of wealth as the bottom fifty percent of Americans. That's one hundred and sixty million Americans. People are struggling five hundred thousand Americans. Every year file for bankruptcy because of medically related causes. We have half a million people who are without housing tonight. Jeff bezos. He made it very clear that he would follow the law based on the facts of whatever the situation was in front of him on this issue of of recusals. I think it's a red herring because nobody's pointed out any real basis upon which Bill should. Recuse himself and all he said about that was look at the end of the day. It's the attorney general's decision whether or not he should recuse because it's a different alleged type of of reason for recusals and Jeff Sessions recusals was almost automatic because of his involvement in the campaign. He was involvement in involved in the campaign at the same time. He he did Mr. bar did send this memo unsolicited to a number of individuals, including they're just including the Justice department. Justice department officials saying on there were certain grounds on which he thought the Muller investigation was unfounded, and in particular, pursuing an obstruction of Justice case, how do you read that again, you heard Senator Cobra sharks pressing console? I first of all let me say, I think the hearing today was refreshingly civil there were tough questions asked there were probing questions asked. But the. Tire atmosphere was was civil in the way in my view. Those hearings should be on that particular issue. Judy. I think that it's very clear that we maybe we separate that into into two parts. First lots of lawyers have thoughts about the Mueller investigation and aspects of the Mueller investigation, lots of lawyers discuss those things among themselves. I'm one of the people named in bills letter with whom he discussed these these matters, not the memo per se, but the subject matter the fact that Bill took his thoughts and put them into a memo, and then sent them to the people who he thought might be interested to hear them to whom they might be be relevant. I don't think that there's anything really unusual about that or disqualifying. It wasn't a job signal that he was interested in the job. I can tell you that is definitely not the furthest thing from his mind was the idea that he might take any. Job in government. Again, let alone be attorney general I had nothing to do with the big question. So many people have of course, for any attorney general is how independent from the White House from the president. Can that person? Be what gives you confidence that Bill bar would not be very subject to influence from the White House. They're very simple Bill bars. Integrity is professional integrity, his personal integrity. And and he said it today he said, I'm not going to be bullied by anyone. I've worked very closely with Bill in very difficult circumstances, he will not be bullied by everyone. The thing that I thought came through today in the hearing and the and the Bill that I know is his commitment to the rule of law and to the importance of the American people of the integrity of the Justice department is paramount to him one of the thing. I want to ask you about his immigration. I mean, he said in a series of question and answer exchanges that he. Essentially supports the president's position that more needs to be done to shore up the southern border of the United States. Do you know the, you know him? Well, how far do you think he's prepared to go on that? Do you think he agrees with the government shutdown to the government should should stay shut down until there's more money for a border wall? Well, he expressed today a great deal of consternation with the shutdown the effect that it has on the men and women in the Justice department and elsewhere in government, I don't know what his view is on how far it should go in terms of length and so forth on the question of immigration, generally. I know exactly what he thinks. We both went to the border when he was the attorney general, and I was the deputy attorney general I was an important part of putting together an immigration initiative during his tenure as attorney general. There is no doubt. And it's just common sense that barriers of various types. And I think this is exactly what Bill said today technological barriers physical barriers human barriers are important to securing the border. The fact that the rhetoric has devolved to the wall, and I'm not sure how much Bill sort of buys into that. And and how unfortunate it is that it's that it's come to that. But the most important point he made today was he believes in the importance of immigration, and legal immigration, and separating that from you can knock out of the chaos of people leading them in leading themselves in as he put it through the back door while people wait in line to come in through the front door one more in a series of truly important issues that came up today, George George her Wilbur, thank you very much Judy. As we reported earlier, British Prime Minister Theresa.

"Livermore, and Morgan hill will get up to fifty six degrees. Redwood City and Fremont this afternoon. We'll both have a high of fifty seven Oakland Mountain View and San Jose all expecting a high of fifty eight degrees. This approaching storm system is going to push inland. This afternoon. That's going to result in a strong. Gusty winds, widespread rain showers, and possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two so. Make sure you drive carefully. If at all possible. Seven minutes now past the hour of six this is morning edition from NPR news. I'm David green. And I'm Steve Inskeep. One of the senators who today questions President Trump's nominee for attorney general is in our studios democratic Senator Amy klobuchar on the judiciary committee where William bar will open his testimony today, the senators who will hear him are senators who had the attention of the nation during last year supreme court hearing. And now the question the nominee for attorney general Senator club are welcome back the studios while thanks good morning is William bar qualified what he clearly has experience from his many years in legal practice as well as as a former attorney general, but qualified also means that someone should be able to be fair and administered Justice. And so my concern going into the hearing in some of the things I'm going to focus on when he is under oath is the fact that literally just last June. He sent a memo. In which he questioned the investigation and that the Muller investigation that so important to getting to the truth of what happened with Russia's influence in our last election. This was a memo that was sent to effectively supporters of the president lawyers for the president lawmakers other people is that correct? Exactly. Well, he said in the memo that the investigation was fatally misconceive those were his words, and now he would be in the highest Justice office that would oversee it and the people he sent it to. And this is what's really concerning. We just found this out last night when he the administration sent a letter back to Indy Graham explaining who had gotten this memo, so as a private citizen, Mr. bar sent this memo to the president's private lawyers to in his personal capacity sent it to of course, the White House counsel sent it to looks like over ten people, including prominent members of. The federalist society in the conservative legal community. So this just gets our theory that this was kind of a job application and essay you'd right if you wanna be attorney general for Donald Trump, and we will note as a matter of fact here that our correspondent Ryan Lucas has been reporting on this. And you are correct that memo was sent and that it was sent to those people according to the administration, although his Defense William bars defense is sure I weighed in with a negative opinion about the investigation of Russian influence in US politics. But I did that as a private citizen my duties as a public servant would be different. He can say that. But again, we only have the evidence before us, and that is that he sent this memo strangely. Just literally a few months before he gets nominated before Jeff Sessions get fired and then he gets nominated for this job. So we're going to be asking. When did you send it to those people? Why did you say it? And what are you going to do about the Muller investigation? A one bit of good news in my meeting with him as well. As in the opening statement, he did say that he would allow the Muller investigation to be completed. And so we'll be asking questions I will about how about the scope of the investigation. The Justice department can limit that how about the budget, and we're really trying to get at one is gonna. Wow, this investigation to be completed given that the president attacks it nearly on a daily basis, and then number two are we going to be able to see a public report? And that part is interesting because he has said both to me and in his opening statement that he wants to have this information public. But yet he sort of couches it in. Terms of as the law will allow well, he can interpret the law many ways. So we're concerned about that the whole report get out there. Although isn't that fair of him to say, I'm going to be as transparent as the law will allow because I certainly can't promise to do something illegal for you. It is better than if he said he wasn't going to release the report at all the issue is that he says, well, I gotta look at the regulations. And you've got the fact that in this memo, he said made many comments which would imply that he thinks the president has a broad executive power just like Justice cabin his hearings dead, and that the president shouldn't basically be brought up on obstruction of Justice charges. I if it's in his official capacity yet he made some exceptions for if he asked to witness to commit perjury, or if he asked so much change their testimony. So those are the things we're going to explore this is so important right now when we're at the cusp of getting the findings from this investigation when thirty seven people have been indicted that we have. Allow Justice to do. Its course this is about a foreign government trying to influence our Electra member that the previous attorney general Jeff Sessions with someone who is strongly supportive of President Trump had a lot of positions that I'm sure maybe nearly all positions that I'm sure that you would disagree with Senator yet he revealed himself to have when it came to the Mueller investigation a certain amount of integrity. Iraq used to be interfered with Rick recused himself from that investigation. When he felt it was appropriate. Do you see any sign that William bar, even if you're disagree with him about many things has that same Intech? I have a feeling if you're asking questions, Steve you had asked that question will he recused himself, and we will to but here's the point. He commended Jeff Sessions for recusing himself and following the rules of the ethics lawyers occur ethics layers. So I'm going to ask him. What do you think? Whitaker did the right thing and not recusing himself. Matthew whitaker. The acting attorney Jack is he went against the ethics, and then I'm going to ask as well. Mr. bar, he should recuse himself because of this memo and other things he said. So you can't go commend sessions. And then not follow the rules of the ethics career advice. Yourself Senator club. Are you planning any more trips too soon? Stay tuned. South for the winter. You are really going south for the winter. I wa is right. South of Minnesota. We share a lovely border, and it's south for the winter. Okay. And I'll just note that people are following your travel schedule because you have said on this program and elsewhere. You're one of many Democrats thinking. Senator thanks so much. Really? Appreciate it. Thank you. Amy klobuchar of Minnesota NPR's Ryan Lucas who's been covering. This story has been listening in from another studio, and he joins us once again, Ryan what you hear there. Well, there were a couple of things, but first and foremost if people were keeping tabs on William bars confirmation hearing wondering what it would be about. I think that Senator klobuchar made clear that this is going to focus to an exceeding amount on special counsel, Robert Muller's investigation and concerns that the Democrats have about bar, and whether he will interfere in the investigation whether he will release any sort of final report there's one important clarification that I need to make a on. What Senator klobuchar said about the memo that bar wrote about the Mueller investigation? He did not say that the investigation itself was fatally misconceived that memo was about one aspect of the investigation potential, obstruction of Justice. By the president a related to the firing of James Comey. That is in particular what Bill bar said, maybe fairly misconceived detail of the investigation. So to speak, homey, was Comey's firing was obstruction of the entire Russian investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. So there is an important difference there. Okay. Thanks for clarifying. That Ryan really appreciate it. My pleasure. That's NPR's. Ryan Lucas before last November the small city of Chico. California had already been grappling with challenges that are so common in mostly.
