"That would make sense. So basically the background vocal was saying, it's the stat blast. Yeah, yeah, I will confirm with my wife who wrote and performed the step less song after we finished recording here. And I will note in the outro if that is in fact the case, but that's what it sounds like to me. That seems so obvious that I'm now embarrassed I asked. Boy, you wasted your money. You probably could have just asked. That's true. That's true. Yeah. All right, well, I'll just go hide and shame. We're glad that you were my trout level Patreon supporter. We do appreciate the support. And anyone can be like Peter and get to ask us a question like that that we would probably answer for free, but also talk to us and treat meals. So this was fun and Peter, you are on Twitter as long as Twitter is around. I am on Twitter, but I'm not very active. I think I did tweet like three times today, but that was probably the first time I've tweeted in months, but you can find me on Twitter. Peter Kay Bonnie. Easier to find me on LinkedIn. If that doesn't flag me as being old, I don't know what does. But yeah. And you can also find my company at ventral dot com. All right, well, thank you. Thank you. All right, I did confirm by the way that the words at the beginning of the step last song are indeed, it's the stat blast, how fitting. And while we did not get to our planned stat blasts today, that will have to wait for next week. I'll give you a little taste here. This is a fun bit of trivia, so Harrison Bader formerly of the Cardinals currently of the Yankees tweeted, I definitely tied a record somewhere for playing with the most MVPs in a single season, judgy and Goldie congrats, teammates like you make me grateful and humble beyond words and listener Lewis tweeted at me and frequent stat last consultant Ryan Nelson at RS Nelson 23. I smell a step blast and so did Ryan who found that Bader is of course correct he has tied a record and he joins an exclusive group of 7 previous players who played with two MVPs in the same season, so Joe Smith in 2016 played with both NL MVP Chris Bryan and AL MVP Mike Trout, Tony fossas in 1998, played with both NL MVP semi Sosa and AL MVP one Gonzales, Brian Robbie in 1997, he was teammates with NL MVP Larry walker and ail MVP Ken griffey junior, Neil Allen in 1985, he was teammates with NL MVP Willie McGee and AL MVP Don Mattingly. And in 1969, Cesar Gutierrez and Don McMahon played with both NL MVP Willie mccovey and AL MVP Harmon killebrew, Gutierrez and McMahon were traded for each other, allowing both of them to play with both MVPs and then finally in 1953 Carmen Moro played with NL MVP Roy campanella and ale MVP Al Rosen. So now you know, Harrison Bader, welcome to the club. We'll have some transaction talk and trades and non tenders to talk about early next week. Man, Cody Bellinger, what a weird career at the moment, no longer a Los Angeles Dodger, although they could resign him for less than the 18 million or so that he was projected to make in arbitration from MVP to non tender. Didn't see that coming. If the Dodgers don't bring him back, then he becomes a classic, quote unquote, change of scenery candidate, the only issue there is we've discussed before, is that the Dodgers are at the team, you think of for rehabilitating hitters, so we'll see if someone else gets to take a crack potentially another NLS team. And because life comes at you fast, we could use your support on Patreon, the following 5 listeners have already signed up and pledge some monthly or yearly amount to help keep the podcast going, help us stay ad free and get themselves access to some perks. It's not just Peter Bonnie, but also Marcus cleaver, Daniel Powell, Nate georgy, Adam Davy, and Daven laurell,

"And it just didn't feel right. I can talk on this podcast about Barry Bonds being good at baseball. And if I bring him up or I mention his baseball performance in a positive light, it doesn't mean that I'm endorsing his character. I'm just saying he was good at baseball. And here, in this medium, I can talk about the bad and the good. It doesn't have to be binary. Right. But if I check that box in the ballot, I am endorsing his character, or at least saying that his character isn't disqualifying. I guess I could write a column and say, you know, I was sick to my stomach when I voted and was the various transgressions that almost made me vote against this guy or that guy or not vote at all, but ultimately what most people see, I think, and what history remembers to the extent that any of this is remembered is whether the box was checked. And what the percentage of support was. And there's nothing on the plaque or on the page on the website that says he hit this many homers, but he also allegedly hit his wife or his girlfriend. There's no provision for depriving someone of a speech currently. As far as I know, there's no node on the wall that says, hey, these guys were great players, but don't take that to mean that they were also great guys. Once they're in they're in and only their greatness gets acknowledged. And under those circumstances, I just wouldn't feel great about seeing them there and knowing I helped put them there. And I understand that historically, the character class was often ignored, but that doesn't mean it should have been if it was there if it was on the books and domestic violence was often overlooked too. And it shouldn't have been. And this is my first time being eligible to vote. So I don't think I have to be bound by the behavior of previous voters necessarily. And I don't know where the disqualifying line should be like if your Todd health in and you've had multiple DUIs. Is that enough? I don't know, I'm not saying you have to be a boy scout or a shining Paragon of virtue or mister popularity or anything. But if you've been associated with domestic violence or sexual assault or grooming a minor or things along those lines, that to me means maybe you're not deserving of the highest honor in your profession. Again, as long as we're considering character, which, for now, I think we are. So steroids are secondary to me, a pretty distant second. And I do find it frustrating that they really dominate the character clause discussion. Like if we are going to have that discussion at all, then I don't think that should be the beginning and end of it. So when I hear long debates about the character clause that are entirely predicated on PD use, I don't want to say that's missing the point because those points can be valid and relevant to, but I do think it's missing a big part of the picture. Yeah. So that's what I'm thinking and maybe so far you're with me or you're thinking, okay, even if I wouldn't reach the same conclusion, I understand where he's coming from. But if I don't think that these guys deserve to get in, then why not have the courage of my convictions and vote against them all? And I think one problem is that this is such a uniquely noxious ballot. From a character class perspective that literally the majority of players I otherwise would vote for or consider voting for have major non PD related character clause baggage. Often in addition to some PD history care about that, because there's a lot of doubling down on there really is on this ballot. Yeah, you don't have to pick one. Why not post? Yeah. So you have 5 no doubt or at least semi convincing statistical candidates with domestic violence allegations on their record 6 if you find Omar viscal statistical case persuasive, which I don't, but you have this gallery you have bonds. You have many Ramirez. You have semi Sosa. You have Andrew Jones. You have David Ortiz. And David Ortiz kind of looked at as a cuddly guy and certainly a fan favorite and he wasn't a lot of ways, but he did have a restraining order for threats and intimidation filed against him by the mother of one of his kids last year. Not even that long ago. And I wasn't there when that incident happened or any of these alleged incidents took place and I can't verify what did or didn't happen and I'm not necessarily equating or tease with bonds or vascular anyone else I'm not saying they're all equally or implicated in these things. A lot of them have denied at least some of the allegations for whatever that's worse than in Ortiz's case. I don't think he was accused of outright violence in the 2020 incident. It sounds like that was a larger mess where he ended up filing a restraining order too. I do know that in 2016 Ortiz was asked about the domestic abuse allegations against the world as Chapman and yasiel Puig and Jose Reyes and his response was these are good guys. I feel so bad for them. I know Jose well, Jose has not a troublemaker. He's a good guy. That's not the Jose I know. He's a good kid, but people are going crazy and want to judge him. We're not perfect. We all make mistakes. That doesn't mean Ortiz did the things that those players have been accused of doing, but you know, not a great sentiment. And Omar vizquel is hemorrhaging votes this year, right? And a lot of people who have previously voted for him have switched to know, and maybe some of that is because new candidates join the ballot, but most of it seems to be because of the DV and abuse allocations against them. And are those allegations so much worse than some of the allegations against other players that those same voters are still voting for, or is it just that the allegations against him are more recent than disciplined and better known because they just surfaced or is it that he wasn't quite as great at baseball as some of the other guys who have similar stains on their records? I don't know. So you have those guys. Then you have fragile Clemens and medie mccready. And then you have Kurt Schilling, who I wouldn't be comfortable voting for either for different reasons. And again, it's not about which party he belongs to or how he votes..

"That stir last year. But he is lovable in a lot of respects and he does these things on the field that make you think he is a happy go lucky fun guy. And it seems like a lot of his teammates have very nice things to say about him. But presumably not opponents he is punched in. Yeah. Yeah, and it's tricky. I think that we can maybe and we don't know that this was what was at play. I think you can understand the context that might lead someone to behavior like this without excusing it, but it is important to sort of understanding it. And I don't know if you've been DFA, maybe that, you know, shakes you and puts you on your back foot from a mood perspective. But yeah, he can't you can't bunch someone without don't punch people, first of all, we can stop at that. We don't really need to qualify, but if you're going to engage in punching in the baseball context switch, you know, some baseball players seem really motivated to do despite us thinking that it was that it's not the best way to resolve conflict. It's generally best for people to have a sense that you're coming because you can really hurt someone that way. It's good that that doesn't seem to have happened here, but don't cold cock someone, that's bad. All right, so let's get to today's topic. The Hall of Fame ballot was released today Monday and I need some help here because any day now before the end of the month, I will be getting a Hall of Fame ballot in my mailbox for the first time ever. I got the email today, notifying me that my ballot was mailed or was going to be mailed today. I am eligible for the first time. I've been a member of the baseball writers association for ten years now. So my privilege as part of that is that if I want to, I can vote on the Hall of Fame. And my inner 12 year old is pretty pumped about this. Yeah. My outer 34 year old is sort of hoping the ballot gets less in the mail somehow. So I genuinely do not know what to do. And I don't mean that I'm like kind of conflicted, but really I've made up my mind already and I just want someone to endorse my decision. I really have not made a decision and I could use some advice from you from the listeners from anyone who wants to weigh in here. And we talked a little bit about the issues with Hall of Fame voting these days last year, and episode 1640, we had a couple of philosophy professors on to talk to us about the ethics of Hall of Fame voting, but this is really real to me now. And I guess it's a year closer to being real for you. And I'm pretty conflicted here. I don't want to sound super self serious and act as if this is the weightiest moral decision anyone has ever wrestled with because I think baseball writers can be a bit precious about this at times. Not naming any names. But in the grand scheme of things, the Hall of Fame ballot doesn't matter that much. But this is a baseball podcast, so most of what we talk about doesn't matter that much. So I basically picked the worst possible time to enter the voting body. I mean, my timing is the opposite of impeccable here. It's like the Donald Glover in community meme where he walks into the room with the pizza and he's smiling and then the room is on fire. That is me work again with my first ever Hall of Fame ballot in the final year of eligibility for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, semi Sosa and Kurt Schilling. The first year of eligibility for Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. And of course, you have the lockout potentially contributing to a dearth of other baseball news. So December might just be like Hall of Fame all the time. That will not be the most pleasant discourse. I don't think. So this is basically like I'm the contestant on who wants to be a millionaire who's torn between two answers. And so I'm using a couple of lifelines today. I'm phoning a friend that you and I am asking the audience and I'm not going to necessarily abide by anyone else as a opinion about what I should do here, but I do value anyone else's opinion about what I should do here because this is not necessarily what I envisioned. Yeah. I thought about voting for the Hall of Fame to the extent that I ever thought I would. Like, once I was in the BBW a and I started looking ahead and said, oh, hey, you know, ten years down the road. I could potentially vote for the Hall of Fame. That's kind of cool and I can have a little impact on history here and I can join the rich tradition of baseball writers voting on the Hall of Fame and I care about baseball history. And in theory, it's sort of a fun activity to participate in. But a little less fun now and I know I'm not the only writer who shares that opinion. So basically it's like, you know, I always envisioned that this would be about picking who were the best baseball players. That's kind of always what I thought the Hall of Fame was not the museum portion, which is separate, of course, but the plaque part, the part where we decide is this guy Hall of Famer or not and he gets to have his plaque in the room. That to me was always about, well, were you one of the best baseball players ever, and it was basically only about that more or less. And now it is not only about that. And I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is definitely different. And so when I was looking ahead to this, I was like, you know, I can be in on the next 11 or Tim raines or Larry walker. You know, I can support those candidates who maybe deserve or support than they get. And I can prevent or help prevent a future snub of an archaeon or a Bobby gricar and Alan Trammell or a Kenny Lofton someone like that. You know, I can cast my righteous vote for the saber metrically supported candidate. And now, well, I guess it would be fun to vote for Scott Roland. But beyond that, almost every legitimate candidate has some sort of controversy associated with them that makes it bigger than just baseball than just the stats. Yeah, just the numbers and just the jaws score. And so it's a different exercise and when that I feel more ambivalent about than they expected that I would. Well, perhaps we can start with a couple of sort of ideological questions that might help you to put some bumpers on this. Because I think that there are a couple of things that as a voter you need to answer for yourself and perhaps first and foremost, well, do you want to do the character stuff now? Or would you like to save it for a second question? Well, it all comes down to the character stuff, I suppose. I guess so. It depends what your other question is. I don't know. Let's start with a question that is relevant both to some returning candidates and also to some of the newcomers. So have you developed your opinion of where performance enhancing drugs factor into your ballot? Well, 'cause I think there are a couple of ways that you can go about this. I have always thought that Jay's approach, Jay jaffe's approach to this is sort of a reasonable one, right? Where he sort of bifurcates the group between those whose association with PEDs was part of what he dubs the wild west period right before there was a collectively bargained policy, the one that we know now that governs enforcement..

"Kind of put a face to the transgression. Meaning you've got garrett. Cole you've got statcast numbers you've got all of the information you need now. That is that that is why this is such a big deal now. Yeah and they're not there are people are saying. Well if you're gonna call gary cole- you have to call. Trevor bauer trevor. Bauer is calling out himself. Basically it's totally different situation. You have garrett cole is using spider tack to increase the spin rate on his pitches so that they're nastier and less headache and trevor. Bauer is screaming at the top of his lungs. Hey we need to clean the shit up in major league. Baseball's like no we don't he's like oh okay so you're not gonna come after a short. Why wouldn't i just do it. And then he started doing it and he told you that he was going to start doing it. That's the difference between the two so it's not a matter of calling it out. I think we all can acknowledge that. They're both using it. And the morality of the situation varies between bauer and coal. And then you have this press conference. Which i think the point that i haven't made yet is if you're garrett cole how the fuck do you not have a canned raw hearst answer to that question normally just because his name was being surrounded by the scrutiny prior to all this coming out but bauer was asked about it a few days prior so if you see. The people are just bluntly asking trevor bauer. Hey like what's the deal with this stuff like. Have you ever used it. You have to know your next. And he was just totally caught with his pants down in. That press conference a gary. Have you ever used spider attacking. he's I don't know how to answer that. You basically just stood up there and said yeah. Yes yes i have. I've used it a lot and it. I mean it is what it is like. You don't know how to answer. Of course we acknowledge that other guys are using it of course but if you are one of these people that are like well you get a call out all these other guys. Take yourself back to the steroid era. Barry bonds was the face of the steroid era. Was he the only guy that was using it. No and i think honestly if you really want to get technical about it. It was almost like you know. Garrett cole was like a semi sosa mark maguire type and trevor. Bauer was barry bonds. Because in that situation like you saw like the you saw guy like sammy. Sosa and margaret wire hitting all these homers. And you're like what the fuck like. I'm doing a clean and i'm really good. So what would i be if i started doing that. And then berry started getting on the saas and he breaks the home. Run record in wins the mvp every single year. That's kind of like what bauer situation is like. But we'll look at those people the different the differences like and. That's the biggest point for people who just wanna hate. Trevor bauer. you need to understand. Trevor bauer was the guy who was calling the commissioner and saying we have a problem you need to address it and if you're not going to address it or you're just gonna give me lip service will then you know what i'm gonna do. I'm going to show you exactly. How big of a problem. This can become and trevor. Bauer went out and won a cy young. When and got a shit. Tony money all because you forced him to think about that. It's almost like bamford was like no. You know what prove it prove it like we know sticking shit does what it does. You're saying what you're saying. We're not gonna do anything about it. And so trevor. Bauer said you know what. If that's the case. Then then what would you have me do. I told you there's substances that make this game very different. You've acknowledged that and you've even said we're not really gonna do much about it. So from their major league. Baseball is telling its players that they have a decision to make and really telling them. You have a decision to make without any fear of punishment because we're not gonna do anything so if that's the case absolutely loaded up spin the shit out of that bad boy insert read it up and that is exactly what happened. And now because the rumblings about the way the game works and the strikeouts and the lack of offense now major league baseball is seeing an opportunity to socialize the losses again meaning. The game is taking a hit. The game is under under ridicule right now and we have a solid idea as to why. Because there's a lack of options and pace blah blah blah blah blah. Well probably because guys are cheating probably because guys are using sticky shit. What way excuse me it has nothing to do with you. Changing the bucket baseball over the last four has nothing to do with you. Not addressing the substance issue that has no bearing and no impact on the fucking game as we see it today. It's val strictly about guys that are using spider attack. You were outside of your goddamn mind that it's a combination combination but Yeah i mean that's the thing about this. This press conference is there's no longer misery artigue karatas the yankee. Prt how do you say the on the lookout for this question. Forget garrett cole like forget him not being prepared. And that's why. I said what i said like gary cole finally feels what it's like to get your fucking doors blown off by something you just never saw no comments there. How do you not say like. I'm not gonna comment on that right now. You want to know why because this is what's ironic about it. He knows that if he would fired that answer off. That would have been the definitive. I've done it and instead chose i don't think dance around it and give you a response a thousand times more of a yes than no comma do. You're not telling me anything. I don't know i'm just telling you in the heat of the moment right there like we all know like if and this is the other thing to think about this garrett cole said something.

Trevor bauer gary cole garrett cole Cole garrett trevor bauer trevor Garrett cole Bauer two Tony Trevor bauer trevor today sammy Sosa both one margaret wire barry bonds bamford
