"This is national native news. I'm art Hughes in bra Antonio Gonzalez. The word squaw is derogatory and is on its way out for any federal places bearing the name. That's the bottom line of a formal declaration by U.S. department of interior secretary Deb Holland. The order also includes an investigation to replace other derogatory names. Holland's action forms a task force to identify and replace what she says are racist terms used by the federal government. She says names should celebrate a shared cultural heritage, not to in her words, perpetuate the legacies of oppression. Earlier this year, the privately owned California ski resort changed its name from squaw valley after decades of pressure from local tribes, at least two states have laws prohibiting using the word for place names. The federal legislation known as Savannah's act has seen its first deadline come and go, and at least two members of Congress are seeking answers. The act of facilitate better coordination and expand data collection to combat the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women calls for the Justice Department to give regular reports to Congress. The act was signed into law in October 2020. No reports from DOJ are scheduled. Washington state Republican Dan newhouse issued a statement, saying he is deeply disappointed that the deadline was missed given the extent of the crisis in his state and across the country. California Democrat Norma Torres urges complete transparency from the department relating to the act's implementation. The law was named for Savannah lafontaine grey wind a pregnant 22 year old spirit Lake Dakota woman, who was murdered in 2017. Another bipartisan group of lawmakers are calling on the U.S. attorney general to act on recommendations on a report by the general accounting office that finds among other things, there is no comprehensive data on missing and murdered indigenous people. Noted Lakota elder Marcello bow has died. She was a decorated World War II veteran serving as a nurse in the U.S. Army nurse corps, a citizen of the Cheyenne river Sioux tribe, she served on that nation's council for four years. This month, she was inducted into the Native American Hall of Fame at age 102. She told native America calling producer Andy Murphy, how much she appreciated the recognition. Do you know I've had many honors in my life, but to be honored by Native American people as the greatest honor I have ever received. Lebeau served as the director of nursing at the eagle Butte IHS hospital and among other things, she was known for her leadership and health and wellness and health policy. She was also a champion of the effort to rescind the medals of honor from the soldiers who participated in the wounded knee massacre in 1890. At the presidential candidates forum and 2019, she asked each of the candidates the same question, whether they would support the remove the stain act. Back on our reservation on the same river reservation, there is a pervasive sadness that exists there because of wounded knee and what happened there..

Called black girl gone talk about why well thank you for having me so the the main reason why i started the bond gone podcast was number. What i you know. I was a fan of true crime but like many things. And you know this country. There is an underrepresentation of of black women women of color and these stories and what i noticed was that consumers of true crime especially true true crime. Podcast have been very intricate in solving cases or having cases reopened or bring attention to cold cases and missing person cases But because the genre is dominated by stories of white people and white women those are the cases that get the attention and get the pressure. And so i decided you know what if i was able to do this. But focusing on black women and potentially bringing that attention to these cases and helping to find these missing women helping to solve some of these cold cases by just getting the public interested in these women's stories And one of my angles was that. I wanted to humanize these victims. Because like you said one of the things that people still connected to the gabby petito ks. They can see her life. They can see her pictures and so they can see themselves and her and so i feel like it's important for people to also see themselves in black women and women of color because we are also victims of these crimes but we are mothers sisters daughters. We are college students. Were all of these. Things that are can be relatable to people and so. I felt like it was really important for this podcast to be out there and to highlight these women and their stories. Can you tell us caracul. Story amara yes so care. Kohl's is a young woman missing from chicago. Illinois she was. I'm sorry she was three months pregnant at the time. She went missing in february October two thousand eighteen. I'm sorry she was a postal worker and here had a doctor's appointment that day that she went to the day that she went missing. She was supposed to go to the shedded ultrasound appointment she went. Her family spoke to her that day and then she called how to work the next day and no one has seen cure coal sense. There was very popular video. That was out that had what the public thought for a long time was cure colds in the video but just In february of this year it was revealed that this entire time when we thought that was chemicals in the video. It wasn't careful than the video and the police were aware of this. The there's been no suspects named in her case. Her father her unborn child was a person of interest but he was kind of allowed to just move out of state. And there's been very little movement on the case and the past few years Her family is still out there The postal service had offered a reward for her for information about her disappearance. But there's there's really been very little national coverage and there's been very little movement on the case and the past few years. What about the family that reached out to you. Because you're doing black girl gone the podcast. Jennifer blackman yes so jennifer black men. She is a mother missing from a river rogue michigan. I got a message from a friend of hers about two months into the podcast asked me to cover the story of their friend who has been missing since december twenty second twenty twenty and one of the things that they really wanted this to be out there and at the time when i did episode i really didn't even have that big of a following But she just wanted somebody to tell her friends story and put this information out there. And so yeah. Jennifer has been missing from river road since december. Twenty second twenty twenty She has four children. Her daughter just went off to college. She miss christmas. She mr registration. And when i spoke to the friend of hers last week there has been no information. No movement on the case Since then and that's just kind of like a steam that happens with these stories of these missing. Black women is that there there is nothing. The police are hesitant to release information. Suspects allowed to move away or to disappear and so the families are really left kind of trying to do this on their own so again. An estimated sixty four thousand black women or girls are missing in the united states. The national center for missing and exploited children estimates out of six hundred.

"Come to you outside today on a beautiful morning up at red rocks park overlooking the city just stopped buying climb the steps. What is one of the most gorgeous stunning concert venues in the world. Also one of the most beautiful places to photograph in the world which is kinda why. I'm here on the show today. We have an interview so big. It didn't fit into one episode. I have been a fan of photographer. Bob wick for years bob might have. What is the best job in the country. He takes beautiful pictures of america's public land's specifically bureau of land management land across the west. You may not know bob wick by name but you have almost certainly seen his work so as an amateur photographer myself. I was so excited when bob agreed to join us and talk about his remarkable career. Which oddly enough doesn't even officially include photography as part of his job description. So this is a two-parter this first episode is all about bob's career and how the bureau of land management has changed over the last thirty years and this is also video episode. You can find it on youtube or facebook there. You will get to see some of bob's best work as we talk about it. If you're listening to this podcast app that supports chapter markers you will probably see pictures as we go as well. But please don't look down if you're driving And then next week we're going to do a bonus episode diving into the nitty gritty of outdoor photography for photo geeks. Like me but first. Let's do the news. Interior secretary deb holland was here in colorado last week. Talking about a couple of bills that we have featured here on the podcast that includes the colorado wilderness act sponsored by congresswoman. Diana get as well as the colorado outdoor recreation economy act or core. Act from congressman. Goose and senator michael bennet but the main reason for the secretary's visit was looking at how to fix the bureau of land management headquarters remember. That's the building in grand junction colorado. Where a grand whopping three employees who were at the old headquarters in washington. Dc eventually moved after former interior secretary. David bernhardt effectively and intentionally broke the agency. Even today there are fewer than forty people working in that grand junction office. There are about eighty open and unfilled positions. So something is not not working here at all and the solution is a pretty obvious one to us. You just have to admit the whole thing was a failure. It was designed to force career expertise out. And it's time to rebuild the agency headquarters back in washington. Now it's understandable. That folks like senator bennett senator. John hickenlooper want to keep jobs in colorado. Even if it's just forty of them so secretary holland came out to grand junction to listen to be element -ployees to listen to members of the community before she decides what to do next and of course the bureau still doesn't have a senate confirmed director has not had one for four and a half years now but we are finally getting close. The senate energy and natural resources committee last week deadlocked ten ten on the nomination of tracy stone manning to run the bureau that vote said it to the senate which voted fifty to forty nine on tuesday afternoon to move her nomination to the senate floor head back one episode for the background on the really absurd character assassination campaign that is being waged against tracy. But i think there's another takeaway here that everyone needs to consider. The fight here truly is not over what tracy stone manning did or did not do with earth. I thirty years ago. The record there is clear. nothing new has come out..

Can you comment on what's happened so far that we certainly don't know final results in the first in the primary in new york for mayor. Yes ame well. It does look that. Eric adams has a pretty substantial lead in this in the count of his. He's got about almost a ten percent lead over myo wiley but a clearly sense. New york is embarking on ranked choice voting for the first time in america election. There's still a long way to go here. Now there's going to be a process of tallying up the the second third fourth and fifth choices of voters. So it's going to take a while. I think the most interesting thing that's happened is one the almost complete collapse of andrew yang who was considered and was covered by the press as a front runner for most of the time of this mayor campaign. Eric adams as you notice a former police captain who was a reformer against police abuse within the department but who has emerged as a more centrist candidate and focusing on how he not only his experience in government but his ability to his willingness to tackle rising crime in the city and another part of adams is a political viewpoints. That hasn't gotten as much coverage as a big supporter of charter schools. And he got millions of dollars and support from many of billionaires who are also the charter school backers so that remains to be seen. How if he does survive in the final count What his policies will be toward the public school system and i think the interestingly adams is leading all the outer boroughs of new york city while catherine garcia the former sanitation commissioner won the majority of the votes in manhattan. Where obviously the biggest white portions of. New york's population are so this is on. It's going to be interesting to see. I my sense is that adams will probably prevail. But we don't know because we're in an uncharted territory. When it comes to rank choice voting few years ago adams had described himself as a conservative republican..

"Meal kit. All right we have some good news on tuesday. Democrats won a landslide victory in a new mexico special election to fill the house seat of interior secretary deb holland. The win itself was expected but the margin was a democratic state representative. Melanie stands vary beat. Republican state senator. Mark moore's by twenty five points in a suburban albuquerque district. The joe biden one by twenty three points in deb holland one by sixteen points the new york times and called the race a quote crucial test of the republican focus on crime since moore's effectively ran a one issue campaign against berry in which he linked rising crime in albuquerque to her past support for a congressional proposal that would cut police funding and abolish ice. It didn't work one possible reason that stands berry massively outspent. Moore's with ads that featured police officers talking about how much public safety funding. She helped bring to albuquerque dan. What if anything can this special election. Tell us about the political environment. in the biden era. It is very easy to overrated. These special elections and parties tend to dismiss the ones they underperform in the ones they over performed. But in a world where you have to take every poll with like a trainload of salts a special election is an actual piece of real data to look at and that's democrats you feel very encouraged about. It is one where this was. Not a mark moore was. Republican candidate was not some sort of like mega reject. Who slip through a low turnout. Primary was a very good candidate. I believe you represented a biden district. A district biden one in new mexico. And the fact that stands for exceeded biden's margin is a sign that democrats stay engaged and there was some real warning signs. Republicans that at least in this district on this day there may be a challenge for republicans running without trump on the ballot as they saw in two thousand eighteen. The question i have is what we've seen over. The last couple of years is just polarization. Increase in intensify. And i start to wonder if you know some of this over performance as time goes on like blue districts are just gonna get bluer. Red districts are going to get redder and the fight is still. You know what's really going to tell us about The twenty twenty two midterms or the twenty twenty. Four presidential are these districts where it's just a lot closer and more competitive and it's really hard to draw too many conclusions from a blue district like this or for a couple of weeks ago a month ago we were talking about that sort of redder district in texas that the republicans sort of One big on. I'm just wondering what do you think about that. I wanna say. I'm not sure you're familiar with the dynamic of this podcast and i recognized you in a very significant birthday this week. So maybe you're mentality's changed but you're half full half empty and so if we're going to switch that i'm cool with him and just like give me a heads up right more pessimistic. Impossible about this. With turning forty is hard. It's hard like. I think that dynamic helps us in a bunch of 'cause they were talking about like oh. The suburban district will the suburban voters who turned out for joe biden and voted against donald trump. Who might have been former republicans will stay with us. My glass half full answer to that is yes. They will because those districts are becoming more polarized thus more blue. I think on some of the other districts that are like more rural little more exurban urban. I is going to be harder for us. And i think once again. This is like trench warfare in a very closely divided country between red and blue. That's gonna keep these elections up for grabs both the more competitive house ones if we have competitive house elections left and of course the national popular vote for president but we shall see so republicans are excited to run on rising crime rates regardless you can imagine trump and other candidates yelling about democrat run cities where immigrants are committing all kinds of crimes. That's going to be their their Their favourite attack. Ben isn't this another page out of the authoritarian playbook that you've seen in other countries Really harping on crime and immigration and others in has. It hasn't worked in those places. Yeah i mean. I was thinking even listening to the previous discussion. You know so viktor orban. Who's such an interesting laboratory. It's like looking in miniature this global trend including the republican party. Here he has his anti-immigrant tough on crime message and what he does with his media. Is you know he'll take one crime and just blow it out on television and blow it out in the kind of newspapers reach people in rural areas and hungary and sometimes frankly it's not even like a true crime know just just just main lining fear into communities. We're there really isn't actually that much crime in rural hungary. The really aren't that many immigrants but it was enough to shape a kind of politics of fear that turned his people out and i profile in the book. A young woman. Who's in early thirty so much younger than you. Now john thank you and she she. She started a political party with some friends and they did two things that were really smart. That i think are Instructive to us. The first is they were a single issue party out of the gate anti corruption the everybody kinda suspects or corrupt. Everybody suspects he's on the take and he wanted to host an olympics and hungary which everybody knew he would have done putin day which is skim few billion dollars off the top to enrich himself and his cronies and they got a lot of traction with an anti-corruption message which by the way is popular everywhere including with orban's supporters right so it's a reminder that sometimes this as you guys talk about don't forget to make your offensive message that has the most traction these voices and and here it's the same thing it's corruption its tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy but then the thing they did is they went very deliberately after they lost some elections in their i try. They went in all these rural places and they showed up and they went door to door literally. We're like you're in the first reaction got as you guys are socialist george shores puppets because that conspiracy theories and hungary to but they ate into the support that that that oregon has and the reason or is actually politically vulnerable is because of a very concerted effort to drive a very negative contrast corruption into start showing up in all these places. Even if you're gonna lose them. And i do think that there's no other way to do it. I mean obama used to say to us. I remember him saying to me dan..

Biden Pressured to Restore Boundaries of National Monuments in Utah

"Confirmed interior secretary Deb Holland is traveling to Utah shall meet with tribes and elected leaders, and the focus is on the future of the Bears, Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante national monuments. Former President Donald Trump dramatically slashed protections for these monuments. President Biden issued an executive order to review that move and his administration is under pressure to restore their boundaries. NPR's Kirk Siegler reports. Former congresswoman from New Mexico. Deb Holland is the nation's first indigenous interior secretary. When President Obama designated it giving it enhanced federal land protections. He cited its cultural significance. Land is rich with cliff dwellings, pictographs as well, A sacred camping and burial grounds. This is our chapel. This is our place of worship. Had Gonzalez Rogers runs the Bears ears inter tribal coalition representing five sovereign tribes. Ah, Holland alone doesn't have the authority to restore the monument's original boundaries. But he sees her visit as symbolic in FAC in the first kind of the world. I think it's less than 30 days of Secretary Holland on being in office, she has had more engagement more action than the previous 1300 days.
