Rep. Barry Moore: Trump Indictment Is a Chance to Heal the Country
"Does Trump overcome that? He's still going to have that challenge if he's the nominee going into 24. Well, you know, one of the things I tell her by the process that I went through, the lord says that fuel humble himself, if yourself before him, he will elevate you before man. And so I pray that president Trump gets to a point that maybe the lord does a great working is hard. I think that there's an opportunity here to heal the nation and to reach people that we haven't reached previously. I mean, think about it for many, many years, minorities in communities have claimed that the justice system was weaponized against them. If they step back and look at this for what it is, they see that we're all engraved danger if they can go after Donald Trump, they can go after us. And so we'll see. But we need to pray for the president, but the process I would not be here today had not been through that process in 2014. So the lord of break you to make you to shape you and sometimes you go through some tough times, but I just want the president and his family know that we're praying for him. We're going to support him and I think the American people will show up as well and we'll have a one heck of an election in November 24. Well, and one of the things that got you through it is your amazing spouse. And I know it's not the first time you've heard it. Man, you outkicked your coverage. Brother, listen. The ham sandwiches were her ideas. She's like, hey, let's hand them out. And no doubt, man. The lord is we were a great team. And she's a comms major ran my campaign for your charge. That's how we were able to win with so little money. And one thing I want to mention to people that are paying attention, the speaker rates and how that played out, the Republican conference up here in D.C., the members of 70% of us are new since Trump was elected. So there is a different move in the country. It's more about the American people and representing them and making this nation great again. And I think we need to continue to grow that movement to get behind the president and push back against this weaponization and the attack on liberty that we so appreciate. And Joe, and sometimes I think honestly, take for granted in this country. Well, then

Baseball Is Back!
"Things about growing up in the south or way where you might grow up into something universally unites it. And especially for young people playing baseball young boys, softball baseball. For me, it was baseball, getting that first glove, getting the ball, going out and throwing, you know, molding the glove, the way you wanted it to fit around your hand, you know, just getting put it under the pill, putting the oil, the glove oil under on the glove, getting it bent in, then putting it under your bed, you don't get it where it would be real lose. You wanted it is loose. You could be, those are all great memories of baseball and today, as we talk about Friday sinus this week, yesterday was the opening day of Major League Baseball. It is a lot of changes. We're going to talk about some of the changes in the rules. We're going to talk about the teams. And just go over a lot of what's going on. So James, by way, doctor Texas on my way of New Jersey and a mets fan at that, welcome back James, it's time to dig into baseball today. I'm not sure I like the way you said a mets fan at that. That's if they're lesser than. No, no. No, that's funny. So I'm gonna guess you grew up a braves fan. You better believe it. So you were so Hank Aaron is like your guy. Now, hey Gary, you know, he's amazing. I mean, but I grew up in the town. Here's the funny part about baseball in Atlanta, okay? As opposed to as you well know, and everybody on this podcast is harder than they see it. Sometimes in the background when I'm taping. I am a falcons fan because in Atlanta, basically falcons and the braves came to Atlanta at the same time. The file comes, however, are just the falcons. And so I'm also very much of a raiders fan and enjoy watching football. When it comes to baseball, baseball, I've always been a braves fan.

The RESTRICT Act Isn't Just About Banning TikTok...
"Today we are talking about a government proposed bill that potentially represents a huge affront to personal liberty in the U.S. and which is very popular on both sides of the political aisle. I'm speaking of course about the restrict act, which while nominally being a way to ban TikTok in the U.S. is actually an incredibly sweeping act that would greatly expand executive authority in a way that many people see as akin to the Patriot Act. So to understand how we got here, let's start with a little bit of background on TikTok. It's no secret that TikTok has exploded onto the scene as one of the most dominant apps of our time. Coming up on half of all Americans now use the app a 150 million people. And the time they spend on it on average grows and grows and grows. And because of that, when we think about TikTok, we can't just think about it as competing with other social apps, but instead, as competing for basically all of people's free time. All the way back in July of 2020, Netflix acknowledged that TikTok was a major competitor. In a shareholder letter around the company's Q two earnings of that year, they said TikTok's growth is astounding, showing the fluidity of Internet entertainment. That analysis ended up being prophetic because by October of last year, TikTok had overtaken Netflix as the second most popular app for under 35s in the U.S., beaten out only by YouTube, which itself has focused aggressively on a short form competitor to TikTok. Now, while there might be questions around that sort of growth and increasing dominance in any circumstance, it is TikTok's origins and ownership that have made it such a hot button issue. Because of course, TikTok is owned by ByteDance a Chinese company. China has undeniably become the big bad in American public life. And in fact, there's been a fairly radical shift over the last few years in the American perception of China. According to Pew Research in 2017, the percentage of Americans who had an unfavorable view of China was 47%, as compared to 44% who had a favorable view. So overall unfavorable but fairly close. By 2022, last year, the percentage with a favorable view was down to just 16% with 82% having an unfavorable view.

Brenna Bird: Iowa Is Moving in the Right Direction
"You are a county prosecutor before you became attorney general, you would also worked in the capitol as an attorney for prior administrations, what's the political mood these days in terms of trying to get things done? Is it as adversarial as some in the national media would claim or do you find there are still enough good people out there in the heartland to take care of business the way it should be done? Well, I do believe we have good people here and people are working on it. It doesn't make it easy though. It's never easy to get something done. It seems like, but as we are working forward in Iowa, we have gotten some great things done. We have school choice in Iowa done. We have a number of major things that have been able to happen in our state. And the process is kind of messy sometimes, but I feel like in Iowa, we're moving in the right direction.

Hey, thanks, Seb, and that Reagan appearance on Johnny Carson. I would really commend that to people if they could track it down and watch the whole thing. It's very, very good. And it's pre presidential years. It's in the 1970s. And I don't know how many people know this. I mean, I know this because of my research on Reagan, but Johnny Carson was a Reagan supporter. In fact, yeah, I've seen a number of letters at the Reagan library between Carson and Reagan and in fact, one of them, Reagan is directly thanking Carson, Carson and his wife. I think her name was Joanne, maybe. Thanking them for a campaign contribution. So they had been, yeah, Carson was a Republican and a Reagan supporter. And so were a lot of his major guests via Bob Hope, for example, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Stewart. And in those days, Hollywood was, I'd say much more balanced, although actually I think it's probably more balanced today than people realize it's just that the conservatives there today are terrified to speak up because liberals today are so brutal that they will destroy you if you come out as a Republican.

The Major Red Flag of a Potential "TikTok Ban"
"Week, we had senator Josh hawley on the program who laid out a very convincing and persuasive case about how damaging TikTok is to our country and boy do I believe that. It's digital fentanyl. It's helping spread the trans social contagion. It's addicting. Kids to screen time. It is ruining their ability to engage in the real and natural world. It spreads awful elements of social leftism while suppressing conservative speech. The Chinese Communist Party is profiling our children in spying on our children. The Chinese Communist Party is using TikTok as a way to try to remake the youth of America in a weaker direction, TikTok is awful. It's garbage, it's terrible. We're not ever going to defend TikTok. Obviously. And so Washington, D.C., being pushed by the way by the tech companies. This is the first thing that we must understand. Is that out of nowhere? Ex nihilo. Washington, D.C., started to have bipartisan hearings on TikTok? All of a sudden they start to care about the Chinese Communist Party. No, no, no. YouTube who has well over a thousand lobbyists on payroll, Facebook who has hundreds of lobbyists and other tech companies started to build a coalition together to try to get Washington D.C. to ban TikTok and do more than ban TikTok, by the way. It wasn't just about banning TikTok. We'll get into that in a second. But all of a sudden, you started to see Democrats and Republicans agree on something that should just make you take pause. Wait a second. Bipartisanship is not exactly something I trust. That means that you have a lot of people that are going to get very powerful very quickly. Red flag, if you will. And the biggest winner by the way of a TikTok ban would be YouTube owned by Google and we called this 9 or 12 months ago. No one really took us seriously because we're on these platforms so often, but YouTube about a year ago launched YouTube shorts a little bit actually before that, but they've really been ramping it up. And so YouTube would be a major market winner if they are able to ban TikTok because they already have a TikTok lookalike competitor. So

What the Heck Is Going on With TikTok?
"The heck is going on? The story I wanted to mention is that TikTok. You know that app that is said to be a Chinese spy app where the Chinese are not only mining data important data from all of us via our cell devices, but are also doing what they can to divide us and to encourage the worst of society if you would in terms of behavior. Their algorithms are really some of the most egregious. There has been a lot of chatter about banning TikTok which for national security reasons is probably pretty darn important. I mean, when the federal government tells all of its employees look, you can't be on TikTok. There's a reason for that. There's a reason for that, but do you know you have the likes of three major Democrats, perhaps the most high profile one being a guy named David pluff who ran Obama's campaign, David blough, was getting paid, by TikTok. This is all behind the scenes. To prepare the CEO for those hearings, boy, was he smooth, right? He was so smooth. So smoothie actually said something super idiotic, which was that no country controls TikTok. You're kidding me, right? Because you see TikTok is part of ByteDance, ByteDance. Is the Chinese company. And you do not exist. Let me just let me emphasize this. You do not exist in China as a company, unless the CCP has a thing or two to say about you. I mean, where Jacques mall lately, have you seen Jack Ma, the Alibaba CEO? Yeah, he disappeared for months after he criticized the government. You can't do that.

Every Bad Idea Comes From a College With Candace Owens
"Look at the world right now in America and this is a fact. We have never produced students that have graduated with lower IQs. It is a fact, since the establishment of the Department of Education, the collective IQ is going down in America, okay? So they federalize the education system and we're getting dumber and dumber and dumber. If you go back and you reread the writings of people that had no formal education and were Civil War soldiers, read what they wrote to their parents, it's like poetry. The way that they describe what they're seeing when they're writing letters back home, no average American can write like that. I would be challenged to write like that. It's literally poetic. So what has happened? How is it plausible that we've never produced kids with this law of a collective IQ? And yet, at the exact same time, we have never handed out more degrees in American society. Does that make sense? Does that can we chart that how are we kids are getting dumber with their getting more degrees? And why is that happening? But because the government understands that to give you a degree is to give you an inflated sense of ego, right? How stupid to think that you should spend four years and a $100,000 to receive a degree in gender studies. You don't dumb that is. You don't have done that is. You get out into the real world. And what happens is you realize that nobody in the history of the world anywhere at any time ever said quick, get me a gender studies major. I really need a gender studies major to help me in this. It's never happened. So these kids spend all of their time getting these degrees four years, $25 that they go into the world and they get punched in the face by free markets and capitalism. They realize nobody wants them. And then they turn around and they meet these kids that didn't go to college, right? They didn't acquire any debt that jumped right into the workforce that have real skills and can work with their hands and they realize, hey, wait a second, Johnny, that I went to high school with and has no debt is now running a business where he fixes AC's and he's cleaning up and he's making millions a year. Zooming Out on the Recent Turbulence in the Banking Space
"Today, we are catching up on the macro as we had an important moment to understand how the powers that be were feeling in the wake of the last few weeks turbulence in the banking space. Indeed, the world for this FOMC meeting looked very different from where things were last time. At least or especially to the casual observer. Now, consensus had been building for a shift back to a larger 50 basis point hike. In early March Powell attended annual congressional oversight hearings and delivered a Frank assessment of the macro situation. He said, quote, if the totality of the data were to indicate that faster tightening is warranted, we would be prepared to increase the pace of rate hikes. Jobs and CPI data for February had shown some cooling but were beginning to tell the story of sticky high inflation. Interpreting this as guidance that a reacceleration in rate hikes was in the cards, markets quickly adjusted. Pricing in a 78 percent chance that the fed would deliver a 50 basis point hike. Just days later, however, when the bank run at Silicon Valley was in full swing, the odds of a faster height collapsed entirely. Some market participants began to price in a chance that the fed would pause rate hikes with the probability peaking at 45% at the height of the panic. On Tuesday night of this week heading into the FOMC meeting, however, markets had priced a 73% chance of a 25 basis point hike, with the remaining probability assigned to a rate pause. Importantly, while this might sound like a strong consensus, that's actually the most uncertain market position in recent fed history. The fed almost always follows the market, but with a major economic shock occurring so close to a fed meeting, it was hard to know how the FOMC would weigh volatile market pricing. Jim Bianco actually outlined this in an excellent Twitter thread earlier in the week. He shared that the only example of the fed going against market consensus in the post 1994 forward guidance era was in September 2008. Bear Stearns had collapsed in March leading to large rate cuts, but by June policy had stabilized. That Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, the day before the FOMC meeting, and markets scrambled to price in a 68% chance of a rate cut, where they had previously been signaling the expectation of no move. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke ignored this repricing of policy and health rates steady. Three weeks later, however, the FOMC would hold an emergency meeting to deliver a 50 basis point rate cut as markets rapidly deteriorated.

Bobby Burack: The Downfall of Woke Influence
"Only way for this movement, this coalition, this cult to ever end, is this culture is the where it begins to die. And you're starting to see major pushback from the very tools of messaging that help enable this ideology. I lay it out, Chris Rock. He's pushing back. Dave Chappelle, he's refusing to obey by woke thing. Netflix most prevalently is dismissing shows that embrace these ideas by getting rid of anti racist program and by ibram X kendi the leading shows about men having babies in lieu embracing confrontational comedy and shows that appeal to Middle America and they're doing so to great success and you look over what's happening on Twitter will Twitter really helped promote a lot of these ideas by rigged algorithm and normalizing walkie trends like putting your names in your pronouns and the bio or using hashtags mask up hashtag BLM. But Elon Musk chief mission since purchasing the platform is to unrig the algorithm to let trends originate naturally not at the behest of anonymous figures behind Twitter headquarters. So if you couple all that together, the way the woke we're able to capture American culture was to a monopoly a monopoly on messaging a monopoly on entertainment. I'm not on comedy, big tech. Will that stranglehold is beginning to weaken and you're starting to see more people be able to not only push back but expose this movement and that makes that much easier for other people to join and I always say woke is like the bully on the playground when finally knocked down it gets up no longer at spheres. You see it as vulnerable as beatable and that's what the woke is. It's a small annoying 10% this entirely beatable.

"Defense spending is always one of the most controversial Democrats and Republicans support it and oppose it for often different reasons. It creates a strange alliance of votes on both sides. But what it also does is rescind the U.S. Military's COVID vaccine mandate. That has become remarkably controversial. The repeal was a must for Republicans to get on board with the bill. Here was house GOP leader Kevin McCarthy on Fox News on Tuesday. National defense authorization act. You know what a new majority means in Congress, we will now lift the mandate in our military for the vaccine. We've been fighting for this a long time. This is the difference when people go vote. This is the difference when I sat down and met with the president. I told him there would be no NDAA in less this was in. Of course, most Democrats weren't on board with this, but they concluded they needed to accommodate this to get the bill across the finish line. They knew its politically perilous and risky to go home for the holidays by not authorizing the defense spending bill. So this will now go to the Senate to be approved before it could be sent to the president's desk as early as next week. Now the newly reelected Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said earlier, the chamber could take this up soon. It is expected to pass in the Senate. The question will the president sign this because it repeals the vaccine mandate. White House national security spokesman John Kirby wouldn't say when asked yesterday. We continue to believe that repealing the vaccine mandate is a mistake. Making sure our troops are ready to defend this country and prepare to do so. That remains the president's priority and the vaccine requirement for COVID does just that. But the reality is, President Biden knows the art of compromise. He knows that both Democrats and Republicans had to come together in the House and the Senate. And this was one of the things that Democrats conceded they needed to do to get Republican support. It would be extraordinary for the president to veto this bill, simply because of that mandate. Another familiar story is popping up again on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are scrambling to try and keep the government funded and avert a government shutdown. This has become a recurring story year after year in the divided Congress. Now, government funding expires at the end of next week, and it's looking more and more like Congress will have to pass another short term stop gap bill known as a continuing resolution or CR. Instead of passing a broader full term funding agreement. Now, if this sounds familiar, it's because it absolutely is. This month's debate comes after the Senate used a CR in September to keep the government funded, pushing back to deadline until next week. This is the legislative example of kicking the can down the road. Year after year, Republicans and Democrats, the Senate and the House have been passing these short term CRs, which frustrates people throughout the government to professionals because it says that they can't plan for longer term spending. They can't decide what they're going to do next year. But the short term funding bills, they do keep the government open to avert a government shutdown. Now earlier this week, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell didn't seem so optimistic that Congress could avoid a short term band aid. We don't even have an overall agreement or how much we're going to spend. We're running out of time. This only so much you can do with the time that's left, which leaves you only potentially with the option of the short term CR in the early next year. But today, speaker Nancy Pelosi, in her final days as speaker, said the house is hard at work to pass an omnibus bill before the end of the year. We still see a pathway to achieving that, however, if we don't have it, we may be forced to put forth a year long CR.

"Some shared very personal stories about being an interracial relationship or members of the LGBTQ community, like New Hampshire congressman, Chris Pappas. Next year, I'll marry the love of my life. And it's unthinkable that if the Supreme Court heeds justice Thomas's call that our marriage might be recognized in New Hampshire where we live, but not across the country. That's the reality that many couples fear. Now you may be wondering why this is necessary, as same sex and interracial marriage rights are already protected via the Supreme Court. Well, they are for now, but Democrats were scared when roe versus wade was overturned in June through that historic gobs decision, showing that this court is willing to overturn long held precedent. That was made explicit by justice clarence Thomas, who said the Supreme Court should revisit the decision on same sex marriage and other cases. Now, some Republicans on the House floor voiced their opposition for the Bill, like congressman Jim Jordan, who argued that Democrats have mischaracterized Thomas words, and this bill does not protect religious liberty. I hope it does not pass because I think it is dangerous and takes the country in the wrong direction. But that argument was flatly rejected by a dozen Republicans in the Senate and more than three dozen in the house. Now the vote comes as the Supreme Court is currently considering a case that deals with LGBTQ rights and religious liberty. Now during arguments earlier this week at the high court, a number of conservative members of the bench seem sympathetic to arguments from a graphic designer who wants to start a wedding business, but she doesn't want to work with same sex couples. With the holidays looming, the house had their hands full today. The chamber also passed the national defense authorization act for fiscal year 2023. On a bipartisan basis, three 50 to 80. Now this bill will set the policy agenda and authorize funding for the Defense Department. And the passage comes after lawmakers in the House and the Senate spent months negotiating certain aspects of the bill. This is what it does. It authorizes $858 billion in national defense funding. It approves a pay raise for military service members. It aims to bolster U.S. support for Ukraine and NATO and far more. There was a sense of urgency to get this done before the year ended, of course.

We'll tell you what's left on lawmakers to do lists and what they've accomplished today. The motion is adopted. The respect for marriage act is officially on its way to President Biden's desk for his signature. It's a landmark bill that protects both the same sex and interracial marriage, giving new federal protections to marriage rights. It's one of the most extraordinary and fascinating bipartisan bills we've seen this year. The final vote in the House today was two 58 to one 69, with all Democrats voting in favor, joined by 39 Republicans. It passed the Senate just last week. Here's House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer celebrating earlier today after the vote. What a great day, isn't it? Not only are we on the right side of history, we're on the right side of the future, expanding freedom in America. This legislation is a chance to send a message to Americans everywhere. No matter who you are, who you love, you, too, deserve dignity and equal treatment under the law. That's about as an American ideal as it gets. Now, today's Bill doesn't require all states to legalize same sex marriage. In fact, far from it, but it does require them to recognize legal marriages from other states. Before the bill passed, some members of Congress took to the House floor to share their thoughts on the legislation.

"I hate this. That means, and then they pick this line for the navy, which is like ships, ship, shipmates self, which means think about your ship, then they should be right. Now it's meta meta mates me. Is there new? It's good. You know, when a company starts breaking out the military metaphors, you definitely know they feel confident. They're doing great. To live in their best. Very good meta mates. I think of you all as my meta mates. Last two, Elon, Elon, Elon. His lawyers filed motion telling a judge that the SEC is chilling his free speech because they keep investigating his tweets. Is that a Tesla take? Yeah, I don't know, man. Okay, here's my thing. I would say, on the Internet, a pattern I have caught is that people will just say legal words, like their magic pro Bono. Yeah. HIPAA. You're just like yell shit. Fair use. And then you're like, you just assume that you've free speech has become one of these phrases, right? You're just like Ron weaseling your ass off. You're just like section two 30. Yeah, that'll do it. It's driving me nuts. Anyway, he had to pay the $20 million fine. He was required to step down a Cecil chairman after the stock price tweet. I'm taking Tesla private from insecure. Can't do that. They hit the monitor as tweets. No one knows they ever did that. And so now he did another tweet that he said Tesla would make around 500,000 cars. This contradicted the company's guidance. That they would make between 316 400,000. So in the context of a public company CEO, how many cars you ship is a big deal how much money you're gonna make? So that's like material information if the company is saying a $100,000 for your cars in your CEO. So they're like, you can't do that. So he's effectively mad that he can't just rip on a bong. And tweet whatever he wants. Yeah. Anyway, the end of this all is Musk to the SEC was making unconstitutional power grab. This true thing. And then the judge to the lawyers in court said come back with your reasonable Pence on. Great, I didn't get that right. The judge said, come back with your reasonableness pants on. Yes. Even weirder. When you settled this down. So then now you have later Musk was like, did the pole where he's like, should I sell 10% of my stake in Tesla? He was already going to do it because he had to. So it's like a joke, you know? But then he did it, the Tesla shares dropped. So the SEC is like, he can't be doing this to anyway, this is all nuts and he's just out there yelling free speech when he's the public company. He can move the stock price. Anyway, I need a word for magic word lawyering. If he's just like, look at Twitter, it's everywhere, just like people just screaming legal terms of art. I got it. Amicus tweet. I was going with some muggle attorney. He's really good. Like you say the magic words don't do anything. All right, if you got ideas tweet about me. Okay, last one, Disney is developing planned communities around the United States. They're called story living. So you can live your story life at Disney. What's wild is this isn't the first time they've done a planned community. Right, they've got celebration, which is apparently very strange place looking forward. But now they're going to do story living by Disney. But the plan with story living is they're going to have storylines integrated into your shopping trip to go buy groceries or something. So everything will be part of a Disney storyline. Can I just read these two sentences, members of the public will be able to visit cotino, which is the name of the first story of the community. By purchasing day passes. While a section of the development will be set aside for residents aged 55 and up. So it's a zoo for retirees. Where do they make the Soylent green? Under the fountain. Okay, okay. It's very filters down. I just love the idea of America reconstituting itself as a series of theme parks and then we have to in their service by Amazon warehouses. And then we have to drive through the badlands to get from one heavily guarded day pass theme park to another. Let's do it. I've watched that movie so many times. It was rad. Charlize Theron was great. The odds will definitely be in our favor. I'm going to move to story living. All right, that's it. We have gone far over. It was a delight. You can tweet at us. Dieter is at backlot. Alex is Alex H kranz, Ashley is Ashley R Carmen. Monica is mc² 96. I'm at reckless. We love hearing from you. It's like a great time. Tell us about Bing. It was good. I want to call it Becca's video about shooting wildlife photography. So good. It's incredible. Very good. Just go watch it. It's a delight. It was like emotional at the end. "I put it on a bright pink sunny IOP. That's why I brought this up to the whole story. Anyway, Google had bought never wear. And now they're announcing this program where they're going to do installers for old PCs and Macs. I'm thinking about putting it on my old single USB-C port MacBook the MacBook 12 inch MacBook. Oh, that could be interesting. I'm guessing it's still going to be slow. That computer. I bet you the battery life will be about 20 minutes on that, too. Well, one of the problems with never wear was they had no GPU drivers or anything. They were just like too little of a company. So particularly embedded Intel CPUs. So I could get the drivers. So everything was very slow. I hope he will never live again. I gave it to max. She likes it. But there's a lot of PCs that are not going to make it to Windows 11. Mostly. Well, the big question here is right now it's like, I think you need to sign up for it and they're thinking it's for businesses and schools. So will they make this available to you to just screw around with on your single port MacBook or is this a we want to only serve schools that have fleets of old computers and we want to make sure that they switch to us instead of stay with windows? How do they monetize them? Unclear. Is it monetizing? They get you to not use Windows. Yeah. I mean, honestly, they already give criminal this away. It's Google. So the whole entire web is a front end monetization. Then they sell Google, they sell the Google workplace Google workplace. That's what Google workspace. Something. They sell the Google office apps to schools. So that's the part of it. But the real thing is you're not buying an iPad in your app on your Windows PC. So I think it's fascinating. I love the idea of things getting a Second Life. And it is true that there's a whole lot of PCs out there that are not going to make it to Windows 11 that are still fine. God. To see the two Facebook things at work. Facebook is on a tear of rebranding things. And I will say there was reporting out of all hands this week. They had an all hands right answers. They're like, what will all these name changes do? None of this is a different strategy. Well, they haven't hired the PR person yet. To fix it all. Well, the elevated Nick Clegg to president of Facebook to deal with policy because Mark just wants to live in the metaverse. Anyway, Facebook, we ran itself to meta. Meta is rebranding the news feed to just feed, because that'll fix it. And then Facebook employees are no longer Facebook urs. They are meta meets. No. Disclosure..

"Don't use megaphone, use a YouTube tool to distribute and we'll give you the Google Ad tech stack. Our analytics and send them out into the world. That would be huge if they do it. I mean, you know, it's sad, like in podcasts, and I'm like, they hired one person. That's a big deal for us. So again, it's entirely possible that in 6 months, this guy no longer works on podcasts. But I think this could be where they're headed. I am curious actually for your take me live because one of the angles I didn't really explore much is sort of how this tagging technology could relate to apple blocking, tracking across apps. And I wonder if Spotify, just like, well, we're not going to be able to see what website you went to, just I don't know, I guess I'm just curious if this could relate to that at all. So I was thinking about this a lot yesterday. RSS is fundamentally so dumb. Simple. I don't know that Apple can do it because all you're really doing, right? You're just someone's like, I want your podcast. They go to the Apple directory. The apple directory is just feeds. And then you make the request. And all that is happening there is all those requests are having a tag just a long string of hex, appended to the URL. So they can, and then that same tag is appended to a tracking pixel. So they just know, okay, the person who downloaded made this RSS request. In the URL is the person who went over here. I think different than a third party cookie. 'cause it's the URL of first you're making the request and saying, okay, here's your URL for RSS from now on. Yeah. I don't know. Do you have any thoughts? That seems pretty hard for apple in its podcast app to somehow fight URLs. Yeah, but I think it's easier for Apple to do it inside its own podcast app. I could see solutions. They've got subscriptions now, right? So they are doing some advances, but the precise way that they would handle tagging in the open podcast directory that pocket casts and overcast and everybody else can plug into. Getting tracking tags and more advanced analytics out of that. I agree is very difficult. But I wouldn't go so far just, I don't know, in principle to say that I think that that would block them from doing more advanced analytics inside Apple podcasts itself. I met blocking Spotify's analytics. So the way they blocked third party cookies is they're just like, if your website loads and it calls a cookie to another domain, that request is blocked. Right. And from a technical level, there's some complication there, but from a conceptual level, it's just like the dumbest thing. They're like, is this on your domain? It's not your blocked, and that means you can't track people across sites. Can Apple stop them upending a tracker to the end of a URL. I don't know, I think people at Apple are smart enough to use grep and delete everything after the question mark in the URL. Like, come on. But I think the people it's a lot of fire smart enough to form a URL. That is the dumbest arms race in tech. That's right, right? But we've been a dubber places. Come on. I guess I just wonder if it's like a preventative measure for Spotify with the death of the cookie to buy this and have this advantage of like we have, yes, it's RSS. We can close the loop for you. Yeah, and it's primitive. But if this is a competitive advantage, actually, to just own this tech stack, I guess. That's what I mean. At some point, you have to pay to use chartable or pod sites, right? Okay, so now you're a business and you make a $100 a year in advertising. Well, you got to pay some money to megaphone. To serve your podcasts, you got to serve the podcast. You got to pay some money to your analytics vendor to prove to your $100 a year client that their spend was worth it. So now you're like, even if it's some teeny tiny rates, okay, you made $75. She paid $25 to Spotify. Well, that's like, okay, all the dollars in podcasts. One way or the other going to end up in Spotify. And so I think I can't remember if I got this right. They're going to let charter will be open and anybody can use it and pod sites are going to keep to themselves or the other way around. Charitable is going to be integrated into megaphone and a Spotify spokesperson told me today that you just have to have a megaphone account. So I think it could be free, but you don't have to host. I got it. Yeah. I'm just looking at that and I'm saying, everyone thinks podcasts are very simple, right? You just open this app on your phone and you get a podcast behind it is an entire engine of money and just like Google, if you look at the ad tech stack and there's multiple layers, Google owns the number one or number two player in every component of the ad tech stack. They've monetized the web at a high rate, and they are the dominant player in web monetization. Spotify..

"Dot com slash verge. Pioneer, a universe of opportunities, open to you. Ashley Carmen. Welcome. Hello. So I was going to have you on anyway because you are hosting big event for us. We'll pop out Senate. I want you to talk about that. You are right hop on, which are newsletter about podcasts, which is very funny because now when people tweet angrily about podcasts, I could say, well, I don't know, and we run a newsletter about podcasts. I know. I saw you drop that move. It's a whole thing. Anyway, hotpots on its happening, and I was like, we should just do a little promo segment. And then more endless Spotify. And they won't stop it. They just won't stop. Let's start with this little like Rogan scoop that the times had because I think it's important. But then I don't want to talk about that anymore. I want to talk about acquisitions because they're actually really important. But the times had a little kind of like an earth shattering Rogan scoop this week. Yeah. So verge cast listeners are well aware of the Spotify Rogan drama that's been going on for the past month, but what they might know have heard us discuss is that this deal that Spotify made with Rogan to exclusively license distribute promote and monetize his content was for a $100 million. This was initially reported in The Wall Street Journal. The times reports this week that it actually was for at least $200 million, potentially more and covers three and a half years. So basically at least double double an astronomical number. Yeah. Can I just if you're Spotify? And you see everyone using this 100 million number? Do you just don't you know that eventually someone's going to figure out that it's a different number at some point? I mean, they got away with it for over a year. Yeah. Also, Spotify is based on speed running being a platform. It's so true. We've been doing this with a Facebook forever. YouTube just name them all. First, you're like, well, engage the press and try to make them right nice things. Then it's like, will lie about content moderation? And now it's like, we'll ice them and they're going to end up at where all the other big platforms have gotten, which is gigantic press shops that are constantly engaged. I don't know if you saw this last week. Alex heath and I were laughing about it. Facebook put up a job listing for just a crisis PR person. The listing is explicit. They're like, when anything bad happens, you have to go research what our best arguments are and give them to executives so they can say to the press. I love it. It's a whole job at Facebook. So I think it's just not there yet. But I know what journey you're on. Godspeed, enjoy. They just need a Rogan comms person. They're like, anytime the press mentions Rogan's name. You must know what to do. Yeah. I just live left love. Anyway, I'm sorry. Ashley's like more exhausted by this than I am, but I'm finding it hard to not be perfectly sarcastic all the time. Anyway, that's the Rogan stuff. Next to that this week. They announced two acquisitions, and I feel like the acquisitions you had a great piece they're competing with YouTube. That's a great frame for it. But I feel like the acquisitions are not getting the attention they deserve because people kind of just don't understand how podcast money works. So tell us where the acquisitions are and then try to unpack a little bit. Yeah. So with this week, Spotify announced that it is acquiring both charitable and pod sites. Those deals closed. I don't think they've closed yet. So that's why I'm saying they are acquiring. I'm sure it will close, but I don't think they have officially. So both of these companies work on attribution and tagging within shows. So essentially, like traditionally in podcast ads, for example, there's promo codes, vanity, URLs. This is sort of what we had to work with if you were an advertiser. Like, oh yeah, I saw someone went to that, use that promo code. Okay, we can say it was verge cast. These companies are able to use tags in the actual RSS feed and then pixels on websites. To basically say, oh, the person at this IP address, listen to this ad, then we saw that they came to the actual website. Okay, they took action. And it essentially is just a way to measure ROI. So this is really critical for a company for everybody, but Spotify especially is interested in this because obviously their whole podcasting is advertising. And they want to be able to offer the most robust analytics proof that it works. They need to prove that these advertisers should be spending money. So that's why they invested in both these companies. It was just kind of like shocking that they bought up both because those are the two biggest names in the space. And they compete. At the end of the road, you need some sort of analytics to prove that your ads work, so you can go tell advertisers to buy more ads because they worked. And you kind of pick one or the other. Yeah, I think some people might have used both, but it was because charitable, you could use more for measuring your marketing. But yeah, no, they were fully seen as competitors. So Spotify buys two competitors. What I think is hard to grapple with is you think of Spotify and especially in the context of Rogan Rogan's exclusive. So you're like, how does Spotify compete in podcasting? And you think it's exclusive in the player, but then there's apple with RSS and Google with RSS. And YouTube, which is a huge player, but the reality is Spotify owns megaphone, which is the dominant platform that serves podcasts. I will now disclose our podcast is served by megaphone. And we're done here, Andrew is going to edit the show and he's going to upload it to megaphone. And that is what will distribute it everywhere. So now Spotify has the technology can insert the advertising tags into those RSS feeds that your Apple podcast player uses. They own that whole chunk, like that's the monopole. That's the money. If all of the money in podcasts, if you want to buy a podcast ad from almost any company, at some point, the dollar you pay that company will flow through a Spotify technology. Yes. My hunch is that I could be speaking out of turn here, but I do think pixels and trackers are like that. The back end, the beautiful display in the analytics is complicated. But I think for like a big company, they can probably build their own pixel and trackers. So I imagine what will end up happening is all these big networks will have their own internal trackers and then the smaller guys are yeah, going to be with Spotify. But that's a lot of people. That is a lot of people, not everyone can go out and build their own track. Yeah, I mean, I was just looking at the megaphone list. It's like our logos on there, disclosure, but marvel. All of marvel's podcasts are served by megaphone. CNN, all the big publishers are with megaphone. So they're already bought into some part of the Spotify experience. And what is crazy to me is when you think about competition and podcasts..

"But i recently. It was like. I need to rewatch. Because i kind of fell off watching it every week and that show is consistently so effing funny so funny. I laughed out loud. Like the physical comedy. The jokes the use the family via harare. Gloria yes i i'm fully at claire. Dunphy like completely unhinged obsessed with halloween. And then build on way. You're like i'll try. I wanna marry phil phil dumpy phil dunphy. I'm mike patrick your your perfect way. You are a little bit of phil dunphy. And we're good the man. Just being their address. It's like cam and mitch's house. And the dump fees where shits so the pritchett's glorious house is built. Jay and glorious house brentwood. It's an eight million dollar mansion fair. Docker cam and mitch live in a duplex near culver city. Okay super q and then a couple of blocks away from them and like the jefferson area. Yeah is the dunphy house which is around a cool to mil. So i'm like okay. That's like where we live and rented because we couldn't afford to buy there. Yeah and i like. It's like super. There's a super cute like family oriented neighborhood so now my life goal is to just hop from each of the modern family houses. So i wanna go. I cam and mitch's k. I know what chrissy once you take your extended hiatus. Come on the podcast. My dream guest. I have some written down here. But i actually thought about these and they have changed. I wanna get lady gaga lady gaga makes me emotional just thinking about interviewing her. I feel like she'd be incredible beauty interview so she just is beauty for so many people. I would love to have her. I would frigging love to have dolly parton. Let's be real. The woman created lake modern day beauty standards for so many people so and she's like the reason why most of america is vaccinated at this point so it would be an honor and a privilege for me to even be in the midst of dolly parton. Let alone have her. Come on this podcast for both of us and then like just like someone that i think is just so beautiful and really talented that i would love to just pick her brain about beauty would be elizabeth olsen. I think that there's so many facets to her that are interesting like she's really great at indies. but then she has this marble character. Wanda vision was one of my favorite shows of the year. And then of course her frigging sisters are the olsen twins. So yeah i mean. And i was watching her on hot ones and her skin is so luminous it. I just could not stop staring at her. She has the most gorgeous skin. Even lau eating hot wings. Yes i like the most plump cheek. I've ever seen in my life. I wanted to like take a bite out of it so i think we would also need to get rupaul in the show. Ooh yes oh. My god rupaul. There'd be incredible. I say these things and i'm like that'd be great but like it's like i don't even think they're attainable so i'm like why what i. I don't know you know what i mean. We're speaking it. She's like the one that. If i see her like do a specific. Look it'll make me wanna want to try it out. what about you. yeah yeah. I feel like so boring saying this but i feel like it was just such a big part of my childhood because my mom to the like we constantly like watched audrey hepburn movies and i had like a giant audrey hepburn poster in my like broom growing up from breakfast at tiffany's though that's not my favorite movie of archer. Hepburn's is funny face and sure aid. But i just think she's just like so beautiful and like the most classic way and her face is just so gorgeous to me. It's like such a boring icon because it's like everyone's icon but her for sure. I did grow up loving and following lucille lou. She was one of only a few asian women to look up to but like i always loved that like she like let her freckle show like she was very unapologetically like herself and obviously like embrace her like asian features so i loved her so much and looked up to her and then like now. I just wanna look like zoe kravitz. Yes yes i you yoon. Zoe have similar vibes into it. The nicest thing anyone's ever said. I feel like she's like there's so much of her style to that is like reminiscent of like an artery hepburn like. She's like a very edgy. Audrey like you know there's a lot of classic elements her style and her beauty but then she like yeah is a lot like cooler and that is where where i strive to be. Okay what is a brand that you want to try. But you haven't okay. This is actually i feel. There's a lot of brands that they haven't tried. But one brand that i truly have never tried and i dislike. Need to see what the hype is about is. I've never tried to barbara stern product interesting. I've never tried to barbara stern product. And i know that a lot of people swear by her. And i just wanted know okay. We'll let me know if you've if you try it and you find the hype will love to know that share the feedback. I actually had a hard time. This question because i was like going through different retailers. And i'm like there's some brands that i haven't tried but it's like i don't really like i am not seeking them out to wanna try them for me personally. It's more about treatments. So i wanna do neck. Lie tbo are like chin lipo or threads. I want to know what the deal with. Threads are like if i can get a little lift to my cheek or lift to my brow with threads. I'm willing to do that. So those are the two things. I'm probably thinking about the most in terms of trying something new. I have never gotten lizard. And that's like something. I seriously like lead on my body like your hair removal or like. I have like my strawberry skin on my legs. That like i have been meaning to get leisured for years and years. And i haven't we need to go to sav- i need to go to sav- let's go. This of said is great. I need to get back on my laser hair removal train. Okay this is the final question. Don't all all right. I got to do and i'm sure i've talked about on the podcast where i flew to new york to shoot the jones brothers and demi it was like a they were both starring on the covers of taibbi bop and i was so excited and you know the jones brothers were so nice before that i was like. Oh my god. Joe jonas as the hottest one. I don't know why everyone thinks nick. Jonas is so cute. And then i interview them on. I was like holy shit. Nick jonas is so hot i was like. Oh my god. I get it. I get it anyways. Dummy levada was also there. And i was still new to interviewing celebrities but i feel like i sort of had it figured out. I'm not asking her like super hard hitting questions. Like i'm asking her stuff that like teens would would want to know and she just like wasn't having it and i was like trying all the tricks that i had learned to get it out of her and the thing that i learned out of that experience after having like processed it and like complained about it for a little bit was out like. She's like human all. These celebrities are human. She was having a bad day and given the timeframe of one that interview was had was probably going through a lot in her personal life. I think like any time. I have an interview with the celebrity. I also like remember that like my job is easy job and they are the ones that have like the heart of having to like answer the questions and to like. Cut them a little bit of slack. Not that like like if anyone is like no one has ever been like super mean to me. She just had a really bad attitude. But i think it was because i mean i know it was because of like other personal things and not because of me so two like separate myself and yeah just realize that people people are human yes. People are human. I do want to add. That demi is a day now. Oh sorry shoot okay. We're living and learning here. They have also said that. It's been a transition for them as well with their pronouns. So obviously sarah wasn't saying that to negate no their pronouns. She was just used to saying her former pronoun. Yes thank you kirby. You're very welcome. That is obviously something that we want to keep in mind. It's difficult and we shouldn't be afraid to mess up. Now thank you for pointing out. I will never remember that. Thank you kirby. I'm glad that you mentioned that because a lot of times if you do have a bad interview with someone you blame yourself. You blame the person because you know they're mean or and you never know what they're actually going through. I'm trying to think there's two moments that pop up one was an event and one was an interview and it wasn't actually like a horrible interview. It was with ashley. Graham and i really enjoyed interviewing her was this year and we had a good time but there was a moment in the interview..

I am so excited for young people to get these instead of having to wear braces and headgear for like six years and like it's so funny because everyone i talked to like most everyone had braces growing up except for me and everyone has such a traumatizing experience about how they had to wear braces and headgear from like sixth grade until like freshman year of high school and i cannot imagine how hard that was to have to have braces for that long. It takes forever. Oh my god and then you're like trying to like make out with a boy or girl. I know making out makes it. Tricky would know. You had your braces when you're little like you weren't like making out anyone yet. No no no no. I was pretty young. Yeah if you have braces and your partner races like kinney get stuck. Well i don't know or is that like from a movie you're like stuck and they have to like unhinged you. My first boyfriend had braces. I think he had braces. I definitely have made out with a man that has had braces and by man. I mean like pubescent boy. Yeah when i was in middle school. But i didn't have braces of the time so i couldn't. I couldn't give advice on whether or not you get stuck or not. Where do they called embrace embrace embrace. Okay maybe i'll get him for my bottom teeth. No you don't need to know.
