"And i think in those moments har- overhead use or head overhead and heart together. You should be rooting for the switch backs to win the game but for court to have decent game but san antonio to still lose mark. How do we. How do you sort this out. Obviously we're happy courts playing well for san antonio fcc but there's also is he having success that is at the expense of the switchback and thus at the expense of a mike edwards. A philip. My jaka a sebastian anderson and which one of those to balance out giving the emotional attachment we have court for and which would actually be better for the rapids. First team come twenty twenty two. I think i mean If i'm not mistaken. Matt lives in colorado springs right so matt cleveland not matt pollard. Pollard lives right in downtown. Beautiful denver colorado. He's essentially located as a human being can ever be cap hill. Whatever so he's close. He's closer downtown denver than i am. Folks So my take on a court for being a big time. Watcher of ussl is water finds its level and that means that i think court is at the right place starting in a us. L. lineup. I don't feel necessarily that despite his dominant performances as you put it He he's likely to find his way back to mls That's not a slight slight on court. Remember that when he was playing regularly for the rapids at centerback. Things weren't going very well and there were a lot of questions about whether that was going to work long term. And now i mean i don't think he has spot so the other thing i was going to say was for court to dominate at center back in In us this year is pretty good for him. Because what he can do is get agents and get coaches seeing film of him in the us. L. looking very good and looking like a big contributor there and he can go free agent at the end of this year to a team that will pay a little bit more for him. You know the the salaries in us eller lower than mls. They just signed a collective bargaining agreement with the us lpga for the first time ever which guarantees players are gonna make about twenty three hundred dollars per month which isn't a lot you know. And they get a ten ten month contract. That's the base but the better players in. Us are making four thousand or six thousand a month which is is good money. I mean that's a pretty decent living. I mean that's slightly below the may the major league minimum in mls. But that's where courts shooting for. I mean he shooting to prove himself to be one of the better centrebacks in us l. Get himself one of these middle in contracts. He's had a pretty good contract with the car. Rap is the mls level for a couple years and hasn't been playing because he's been injured. So i think money is a secondary concern for court Format you know his desire to see him on the car. I'll switch back to not have them kill us. switch-backs fans for me. It's secondary to being personally a court ford fan right. I want whatever team court forward is on..

"Halftime here at Wind er feel the Colorado Springs switchbacks with the 31 lead over real monarchs SLC Ryan Kaufman. And Roland Vargas back with you and Roland. We wanted to see a Bounce back. We want to see an answer for the disappointment of Thursday night, and boy did we get one? Yes, The switchbacks are on it from the first minute. They were playing the ball around. Really? Well, we saw during warm ups just The speed at which the switchbacks were playing. They continued at the start of the game one to touch passing, getting the ball out wide quickly. Runners getting up both sides of the field. Sebastian Andersson, especially doing a really Strong job as he has done all season on the right wing for the switchbacks, and they've deserved this lead at the end of the 1st 45. Well, the first goal came 16 minutes and and it was Michi Galina with across this will count for his sixth assist. Of the season, which leads the league but a little bit. Wait to react. A defender for Real monarchs and Shane Beckford. It came right to him, and he just gently tapped it in the back of the net. Yeah, it was brilliant play again in those wide positions from the switchbacks. That's what created their goal. Got it wide quickly ball right across the face Beckford on the finish one nil. Well and then Haji Barry got back into the score sheet, his 11th of the season. And this time it was the shame Beckford helping out so decisions had a very nice evening. So far one goal. And one assist. And then six minutes later, Real monarchs SLC Gets one back. They went a couple of guys in behind errors. Breaks ends up. Finishing off the cross by Douglas Martinez made it 21. And then you thought, Okay, What are the switchbacks going to do here and what they did, about four minutes later was score. I believe their first goal off the corner kick of the season. If it's not their first. It hasn't happened Much was a brilliant sequence by Sebastian Anderson and Michael Edwards. Yes, beautiful ball into the New York Post from Sebastian and Anderson. Michael Edwards made that run from a long way away. He starts outside the 18 blazed across the near post little glance finish Beautiful gold 31 switchbacks. And that's our score at the break switchbacks leading by a score of 31 on this fourth of July. Well, we come back the halftime show. Special gas explore a little in the booth with us and I won't keep you in suspense too much longer,.

"For it and be Sebastian Anderson, who added for moment, but it just goes off of his foot and out of place. So sporting KC, too, will have a throwing. On the near side. Boy, that color scheme for sporting KC not doing anybody any favors, including the guy who's supposed to identify who the players are out there on the field throwing coming. Take it away. Five. Sporting KC to now the switchbacks able to reclaim possession in the middle of the field. Michael Edwards Out to the near side. For Matt Mahoney. Mahoney's past looking for tour is a little bit of his reach, throwing coming here for Sporting Kansas City just about 20 yards away. From their own goal. Good high press once again from the switchbacks, forcing Sporting Kansas City to further and further back, not giving them any outlets whatsoever and that midfield area Run by Casey is headed away by switchbacks FC. Now they'll take it away in the middle of the field is Beverly marking Gila. He'll pass it back to Michael Edwards, who sends it all the way back to Andrew Penenberg got to get the keeper involved. And it's good thing that he hasn't been too involved. That means that the switchbacks are defending very well here to start this match as the switchbacks with a long cross into the box doing can't quite get there, and it will hop out for A goal kick as doing was coming down the near side of the field. This time he scored his goal from the far side so doing all over the place here early for switchbacks FC, which Brandenburg Certainly likes Long pass downfield by sporting is played out by switchbacks FC. So a throwing far side the field right at the midfield stripe. For the home side who are looking to just get something going? I don't think they've even had the ball inside the 18 yard box yet. As we keep bringing up new benchmarks for them to hit in this first half. They got the three Passes linked up, but Have yet to bring into the box and already we're going to get a change here for switchbacks, FC and Coming in for Matt Mahoney will be Batista. So Obviously, Mahoney not feeling right because this is a guy who could go all 90. If you Ask But where? Obviously not They're in Kansas City, so we don't Have our ear to the ground, but honey will be replaced in the lineup. For Colorado Springs. So early substitution used by Brandenburg, and we'll see how this changes things When you look at Lamar Batiste at six, ft six certainly brings a different skill set. To the match. Then Mahoney does is finally the ball comes into the box, and it'll be knocked down by Andrew Penenberg off the cross from Sporting Kansas City, and you think it might lead to a slight change of the defensive formation for the switchbacks. We'll see about that going forward, but as of right now, but he's to switch going straight into that left back spot that was vacated by Mahoney. Mahoney being checked out. On the sidelines as we could see on the television broadcast hereby switchbacks trainer Andrew Peter. So we'll get some confirmation on that will also see what that's going to do for the switchbacks formation, especially in that back for But as of right now, Batista straight into the left back position. And we'll see if that plays a role moving forward as far as what Brandenburg does with his remaining available substitution is here. We're just about 25 minutes into this one. And Batista is in and you could just look at him and see that he's got all the physical tools maybe. Oh, little bit raw is playing, but he's got some good ball skills and there we just saw it is he Maeda passes just overran by his intended target. This is just By comparison, there are an older team compared to sporting KC. But this is still young roster that Brandenburg has put out there and Batista's one of those guys, but Just has all the tools to be a really special players. Sporting KC brings it into the box there. Cross was blocked rolls out towards midfield picked up by Austin doing doing sidesteps Freeman. How he pushes it up the field across midfield. He comes. They're not going to pick him up. So doings like, okay, I'm gonna keep dribbling. Now We pass it to the middle. Phil for Haji Barry. Albury. Swinging it to the far side of the field. Switchbacks trying to build up the attack and the ball taken away by sporting but repossessed by switchbacks FC. Now in the middle of the field midfield circle. Michael Edwards has it. The switchbacks looking at Pressed for just a little bit with Jose Torres his past a little bit hot coming off of Zach Sandy's foot. Take it away by sporting KC too. Lot of movement there from switchbacks have seen not much going forward then and now sporting Kansas City, breaking out the other way on the counter there, dribble it down the near side looking for the cross Good layout. By Andrew Painting, Berg. Keep that passed from reaching its intended target. And as we get another look at this again. It was a good look and crossing their Penenberg had to make this stop, and he was able to do so. And that's where that long frame you're mentioning, rolling in the pregame show comes in handy. Yeah, that was a really good move off of his line to to snag that ball didn't know quite what was behind him. So Penenberg had to make the decision there to come out and claim that one is the ball is played back to Pan Enberg and he just goes long. With his clearance, but just update you on Lamar Batista 661 65 is what he's listed at so as thin as a lamppost for Batista, and he spent some of his formative years with the Gauchos. And that is going to be a penalty kick for Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and indeed will be Haji Berry came into the box. Macintosh came out hard took him out. And this is a golden opportunity for switchbacks FC to increase their lead and Not to anyone surprise. Haji Berry looks like he's going to take this one. As we get a look at it again. It was a great ball through a Macintosh just coming out there and took out the legs. Of Haji Berry pretty easy call for the officials to make, but a great link up between Jose Torres in Haji Bury, You know, Once ACI Berry reached that ball first made the touch outside around the goalkeeper McIntosh. You knew that was gonna be a penalty kick Macintosh just slut size them over, and it will be Haji Berry stepping up to try to make it to kneel for the switchbacks. Barry scoring a pair of goals in the preseason finale, looking to get his first of the regular season. Macintosh.

Matt Mahoney Andrew Penenberg Jose Torres Andrew Peter Lamar Batiste Casey Sebastian Anderson Albury Michael Edwards Andrew Painting Lamar Batista Barry Zach Sandy 18 yard Freeman Mahoney Haji Berry Phil McIntosh Haji Barry

"Boy. That's a hard to pick. I'm guessing he comes off the bench and has you're the thousand minutes. I think he will be the majority started. He'll play at least two thousand minutes for the switch-backs at centerback sebastian anderson bastion anderson. And i'm gonna take the the over this time and say that he's the starting right back for the team in place the majority of medicine and get some development time. I think what the schedule congestion mark. I don't know that the wide roles where you're going to have to do a lot of running especially at altitude. I think that's those are the positions where you're going to naturally see the most rotation i wanna i hope gets at least five hundred minutes. I don't know that he breaks more than twelve hundred. And i would say the same thing met humbly so there are all matt on the to. Yeah i'm with you on on unle- you know seeing him jump from a lot of time on the field last two years to subtly being a starter is unrealistic. But i i hope he's stop spot starts. I think with hunley The challenge with him is and this is like the kind of cliche that unfortunately. I hear soccer commentator Why i'm having a hard time with the word soccer soccer commentators today. i do. I having a problem it. It's the kind of thing soccer commentator overuse which is the final product. Just not there right like he. He's good in the build-up but when he gets into the final thirty often as a deer in headlights. Look he often also from a wide position will just shoot the ridiculously. Not smart shot Rather than look around see where the next available player is. He's got to get better at that or he's never gonna move forward as a player and he's always gonna be stuck at this phase of development last one mark villa. My i think my office starts. I think he gets the bulk of minutes. I think he either shows well and is it an impact player for the switch backs or does the opposite in the sense that he's too good for the switch backs on the rapids. Decide to bring him up to put him in which you know for his development is is not a bad thing. I see micheals development in a similar way to the way i saw shinyashiki which he's he's a really exciting player And you should vilo on my aca and hold onto that stock Because it'll be worth something not that we as Pundits and fans can actually invest. If you're going to get your nf. T go. Get your nfc at philip. Biogra- i think i think mark philip maiocco will be will be one of the top three most for the duration that he is with the switch backs this year he will be one of the top three most impactful players. I know opt doesn't do a whole lot of stuff with us championship mark. But if i look at at the end of the season if we do goals plus for the.

"I'm still curious about you. Know sam vines missy for three calendar months combined for the national team this year. What does that mean in. Terms of stephen shire's usage or are we are we going to try out you know keegan rosenberg play on the left. Are we going to try out. Sebastian anderson play on the left or just robin think. He has a little tinkering idea there. In helena cost of playing at left black in a playoff game and not being totally terrible aware. I don't know a player like philip. Maiolica could start in that. Be okay at midfield. Switch things up. Kellen he come back in play his more. But it's still something i'm curious about. I think both of our concerns are certainly valid. Mark that said we talked about the four open roster spots that were available. You know maiocco taking up one generation. This kid who already signed mario's taken to they move the other homegrown to fill out the proper from a roster slot standpoint twenty nine and thirty. There's really only two other players that the the rapids consign at this point. So there's not a lot of. There's not as much flexibility unless you're doing it in early trade where they're trading player for player or multiple either case mark. Let us get on to ask. H. t h l. Let us start. We've got a bunch of really interesting questions Teheran thornburgh excuse. Me has several really good ones. But let's go to the email question that we had mark from david. Malan fans david asks Hail looking at barrio. Signing did we miss an opportunity to sign horry bear. I know he cost more five hundred k. In game when cord sold a couple of weeks ago to l. afc but that seems like a large asking price for bear thanks for your continued reporting gave malefactor mark Michael borrows a good option. Wide option will score. Some goals provide some assist who was on eighteen where he was surrounded. Maybe by some young talent to wear his own individual capacities weren't being utilized to maximum. I think we say similar things about one corvair who now obviously seriously upgrading his attacking front potential in playing next to rossi and carlos davila if we go back to again the rapids trading a first round pick and an international roster spot to get varos and fifty k. in gam- is peanuts relative to the half a million the l. Afc dropped on or baird thoughts on berry going to l. afc the rapids miss. Something could have gotten something with him or are the players enough to wear barrios was a more cunning and more efficient acquisition. I remember a couple of weeks ago doing some work for american soccer analysis and looking at the numbers on. Maybe it was months ago. Name look at the numbers on corey barrett and seeing that he had really kind of like as an asset That his numbers look really bad compared to last year And you know what but when you see Bob bradley l. Asc make a big move and spend a lot of money..

Sebastian anderson corey barrett keegan rosenberg last year Mark carlos davila mario eighteen Maiolica Bob bradley l. Asc maiocco l. afc l. Afc this year both first round thirty five hundred k. fifty k. Kellen

"You know not immediately right now but you know to go to Europe or where you see the rest of your Tom Goal by right now. I just want to start gave them a lesson liaison lessons dollars the myself here. And then summer Somerville e I'm fascinated with growth of youth development in American soccer in the context of you know everybody's got being homegrown that they're looking at right now. At least you look at baseball. For example you know everybody has like a here's the whole prospect pool of everybody in everything now. MLS Tease in media are starting to have have that in terms of their Kademi so on the one hand you know. They put a lot of hopes in Tyler Adams or you know a player like you or certainly colour Sam Vines but on the other hand you know you've got the entire rapids d the academy. That's behind you. The full infrastructure here obviously got mentors in the team as well. So there's a lot of expectations but you also village to support you. What's that dynamic? Yes definitely great on the doing really well so far. Obviously the main goal the academy is Produced players for the first team so Dalit lead lead. You said Zambians quote myself for example that came to the academy and they prepared as well and then like now we have two players with consistently training them. They always GONNA be. That was added project April great because they have five or six homes again. That's obviously greatly club and graver like just lives in the academy. Hey America or Having the plant this level they actually have a shot of professional that the How's the how's it? Felt breaking all of Kohl's youngest rapids players to do X Y and Z. I give the the signing or getting the first goal to one after another. We're waiting goal. And he he because accident using at the beginning of the year. You just way like you're going to score a goal.

"I think with the Browns who eventually drafted him. Basically saying pick me and let's recklessly of that with Seattle sounders and in Criminal Don was so relieved and I don't know what it was that Mateen's not want to draft him basically brought him in and said Yeah. I know people thought that there were some issues with him. We're GONNA work with them. It's it's GonNa take some time he's going to be good and now he's a borderline. US International Albeit with you know maybe Gregg berhalter favoring less players but he's a quality player in the midfield he's an absolute bulldog and he was a major part of why they won on why they want on Tuesday and if he has a big performance he could be a big part of why Seattle's winning their second analysts cup in ten days time I can't point to the other teams whether Chicago whether it's DC united others who have gotten the equivalent of a criminal dawn of a of a Walker Zimmerman end up at Latif blessing of all of these other interesting moves that ultimately they get great value out of and the example that I have and I apologize for using another example from my galaxy. Reporting Years Past Route Serena won in two thousand fourteen. Yes because he had a lot of money but he picked up Dan Goggin as a backup right back because because they weren't sure about Asia Aj Daily Garza's health and he picked somebody off the scrap. He who San Jose who had missed the playoffs didn't even want he got him for the League minimum and they got like a thousand man out of him. A couple of really good defensive work rate any played in MLS COP and ultimately they want so yes. Andrew there is an aspect of pay. Hey to succeed if you have one of the top seven budgets in MLS as long as you're not swinging and missing on all of those immediately. You are in a position where you have a game. Changing Changing Talisman player. Who can put you in a position to at least be a bubble team in the playoffs but if you miss him a draft if you miss on a couple of Tan players if you don't have a lot of depth options if you're not getting value out of your development academy you're the Chicago fire if you're doing all those things collectively and doing it? In a way imposes a style. Impose a culture both in the locker room in the dress a on the field on the training grounds then yields dividends. You have what Brian Semester has done. The last couple of years with Seattle sounders you have what L.. AFC has in what is still probably one of the best teams amylase going into twenty twenty with L. A. S. C.. You have Atlanta United. WHO STILL WANNA double this year and you have? Who Am? I forgetting Mark Toronto. FC With Greg Vanney. You know the WHO's possibly winning a second analysts cup in in two years and probably with that and maybe one more trophy next year. You're saying that the closest thing we have to a dynasty in MLS three point. Oh there's not a lot of room for error for the budget teams budget teams have to get everything right. They absolutely have to win in the draft and absolutely have to win with their home grounds but those four teams are there because they've won on all fronts and I think it's fair to say mark that there are a lot of fronts with the Colorado rapids did not win and there's a reason we're talking about Seattle in Toronto and not the pitch right now. I having like a bunch of investment. You know them in and out like notre tendencies. Everything's Oh you know what you had to go to like go out and do lands on just. This is a lot of excitement going to the Games. No couple of weeks back. You had a birthday. Seventeen isn't as fun as the sixteenth. Maybe energy do anything anything on the eight. Oh Yeah Outlet fence a little bit and then allowed to do with my band. We were okay. Sounds good take back to your first soccer member. What's your first conscious memory of a soccer ball and playing the game? Yeah I remember when I was or via little little by little kids running around the ball. No rules really like field. Some down now. Those are my first members vows. Youngest going Out Jason The ball scoring goals I e was that back in Sacramento area thousands in Colorado. Okay what's your first memory playing actual structure eight or eleven level. One of that happening I figure I mean we've read NBA when we were Progress that age and then let me let me Louise earned obviously like you. Well as we move up the bigger field nozzle in and got More serious like we were doing well. We're in the top groups competing in well kept pushing night. We had a great us. We knew that Everybody wanted to get some mergers offer. So I wouldn't have pushing that that the law we talked about your introductions the rapids the academy and then ultimately the decision to join an obviously worked out so I joined by Bids Academy about two years ago Jeez with them and I McLaughlin Riyal Colorado. There are great love and it just got to a point in my career. Where are I realized that moves ravs time it would be the best for my future because they had something that we all offer was Ahsley? legos offers so I came over to the routes with that mind thing over here on guiding an hour plus every single day like making sacrifice. My family's making sacrifice but I'm dude as is not like the vessel and then you know at least when I spoke vines but with opacity ago and they you know they were a little bit earlier on they they were with the padding longer so they joined earlier age so they may be saw the evolution of it was. There's something that maybe tip the hat in terms of the timing of when you joined the rapids. Yeah a little bit because so I I was always on like what talk to you and drizzles Latakia going be while in Colorado I think it was about thirty was the first time ever got beat by teaming Colorado by rapids That triggers allows again. Maybe like this covers academe glove of them. The color used progressing Mario's ave that is as well and they also it's not real offer. Ah Having joined the club as well. Long that Opportunity's vows rent when Cole would did you ever overlap with Cole where he was with rapids correct. We actually went over to Rabat's Zeta Okay here so we talked a little bit of Our our kids and House with him training one time and actually call long vote and talk a little bit. Excuse rush a difficult area. We talked a little bit about like rapids and leg. Just like the Like like stuff like that. We kinda connected bill before we first met each other we both came over to rapids of the same year and the vendors uses light on the team. Royal Awesome Why right back at the right Satterfield? Chica the reason you fit in there I mean obviously on my buds available. More Bartlett but I used to be a midfielder and then about you. Thirteen moves right. Backs isolates buying up groups and kind of where I bet a vested in and started the most so I played right back out developed into that SPA and work through fourteen fifteen sixteen and a number four or five years of my life have been a spot. We've seen a couple of times this year Keegan me more right back in advance and you guys have a little one while you know his right midfield potentially your future at the pro level the preference of identity did is like potentially vital up. I mean for me I don't have I just don't get on the field. That's what's the best advice vice. You've gotten this year. Veteran awesome busted buys you give a few examples of like no one's Danza. I think I just think assembles lawless. When he first came in news like some of that we didn't have much desire and he had this desire to Not Beaten to not let balls through chickens house like while these are these. Are these care. So much about the pending Warsaw allied with something. My Reynolds is like. This is a different kind of dividing lousy before you have any mentors on the team anybody up up tours taking you under their wing. I mean knowledge related to Calix is super nicely. Younger guys Like I said like laws dating under his wing Law You this is the center back what we've played each other so he's been doing qualitative. You ought to do that stuff like that. What's your relationship? Like with Egan Rosen. Barry US let's go making a defense obviously He's a good person to be involved doing this season. So you can see everything is doing right and I can be there watching China show While I have offer Bevis in time like near a little bit what he does obviously he's playing verbis ask something that is really not why fields those good hassle not doing well. This season to live on the was a healthy competition. Yeah sure okay. I'll where's your biggest stereo growth employment Crawley played quake is obviously the speed of the game in yeah between between The academy professionals deadliest step up. Those not only is just like people paying quicker move. Pass the ball harder punches. Have -tainer stuff like that. But also the sheer physicality the strengthens view. The fires Element as well. He has stuff started to slow down where you can actually like seeing process and think about stuff mid action that starting to happen A little bit but mostly like you gotta know what to do before you get the bomb long Take a clean touch and then if you have a good touchy out different options and Canadian another offer to assure. You cannot zoos like we're the touch than I think. We spoke after the arsenal friendly nasty about pace of the game. You said honestly it wasn't that bad was that maybe you know that you know. was that a milestone data point for you in terms of like. I've accomplished something. I've improved the point. Where like you know? You're playing one of the biggest clubs in the world and you were completely out of your depth particularly in terms of pace of the game. Sure obviously great team in the office but look at youngsters on accuracy Z.. That this is how I keep up with them. That you can put tackles nagging. Do stuff like that. It's definitely something that Back and say look. It's not that far off. There's still that wasted. Oh when you want to get that loan. Where's the biggest area of improvement? SLOP making the game for me I led to say like the vending. Won't be one the because obviously don't unless there's I lost feeding yourself being able to not only like just like block houses and shot by Willa von Bulow Abbot. I think that's my room are one of the biggest goal for the rest of the one that idea. I mean as G. Loo Automatic playoff is live jams right now. Button as a now working overtime to win every game and Personally for me. I only called up to the seventeenth woke up. That's coming up. Here is a great interview step because you great great segues I guess on that note you spend a lot of time with the reasonable view seventeenth. What's national not prospects hopes was that look like your comfort level or you know making all the way to the Fulton? Yeah sure right now is back in the seventies for sure I was playing with the rapids. Prepared me a lot more executive into the Janssen. "The Supporters Shield winners and arguably we the greatest regular season team in major league soccer history and then the last three MLS Cup winners Seattle Toronto in Atlanta from Twenty Six to twenty eighteen. Generally early speaking if you were to do a correlation graph between You know You know results on one axis and the amount of spending on the other access you see. It's basically it's probably over the last seven years. It's probably Sporting Kansas City is the one outlier not spending a lot of money and being very successful and generally teams that spend a lot of money do better. There are a couple of good outliers for that. You Know Chicago. Fire had some big budgets in the past and not done more than make the playoffs. Or you know be right on the bubble and then obviously Orlando. I spent a lot of money in the continues to be a middling team but generally speaking if you WanNa look at who is the wooden spoon winner. who were the bottom? Three teams in each of the conferences differences. It is usually Usually teams that do not spend a whole lot of money and generally speaking. It's very easy for teams at spent a lot of money to at least be at the middle no mark in terms of barely making the playoffs if not outright competing for it and the speaks generally to the stratification that we see whether or not Don garber likes it you forever l.. AFC sold out soccer specific stadium team spending a lot of money. You know advancing the team you know advancing soccer the same thing probably to New York teams for Atlanta. There's a Chicago Kaga. Fire playing in Bridgeview and their seven thousand people there and the team doesn't spend as much money and the teens generally bad we throw Colorado into that I would throw in. I would throw in. DC UNITED PRIOR TO AUDI field. You'd probably say the quakes under Dominic near as well just a general stratification of pretty soccer star players having results getting Ding Wayne's great atmospheres and really really lame atmospheres you know. Nobody wants to like who wants to go to Houston Dynamo game at this point given the money that they spent and how poorly they finished the season. That was a big word salad mark. Where do you WANNA start in terms of eating this thing? I think that The question is so good. Ed I mean it's really a good one. The the fundamental answer. The simple answer is is to disagree which is say that because m alas is a salary cap league because every team has the ability to get three designated players because each of those designated players you can pay as much as you possibly want You know and because scouting and research and metrics and analytics are just as valuable in soccer today as they were for billy being in the moneyball era of baseball this ball A smart team a good team. A team that pays league average amounts of money for players should be able to new compete in. MLS and I think some of the play-off teams And the ones specifically that that Kinda snuck in our our good evidence of that I mean I mean our S. l.. Who We don't like to talk about for obvious reasons May the plows were a mid mid level playoff team and had a pretty good shot things of Minnesota After a couple years of being total trash basically went out and got like one guy who changed the story for them this year. Which Dr Barreto? They reloaded down the stretch with a couple more guys than they they were looking a lot. Better you know and I mean you could make the argument alot to a stretch to say that the rapids had you locked off their first ten games of the season of playing utterly terrible soccer under What was was almost certainly in incompetent manager? would have made the playoffs. Despite the fact that they effectively only had one designated designated player So you know a smart manager who goes out in a smart front office it goes out and gets a little lucky in in scouting but also also gets is really smart. I mean the rapids. Basically you can either argue to things about the rapids in regards to this kind of story. You can either argue that it anthony. Hudson screwed them over because he was so incompetent or you could. You could argue that. Poor Smith really flip the script and changes game on them because he was able to bring in in just one calendar year Andreessen Yoshiki Jonathan Lewis and lawless Abu Bakar and completely change the talent level and the capabilities of this team It doesn't take that much is what I'm saying you know it doesn't it doesn't take none of those guys DP player like it doesn't take that much money. The only money's really good for and turning in making the argument that this this league isn't a parody. League is that you can with a couple times and spend a lot of money and still have a lot of money to keep swinging and missing to go with the baseball analogy right. I'm Ron can go out and get that Omar Gonzalez Atlantic can go out and get fifty Martinez in Ezekiel Barco and Joseph And gristle and and Gazon and they have. They've they're loaded for bear But they really they still. They still can't still couldn't bring it all home so so It soccer parodies there Emma's pretty crazy and you know we will really see. I think a really a good question to kind of tie this into the last segment When I mentioned the CBA is how much the next next CBA might affect parody and how much the league wants to keep some of those issues Together whether they want want whether they want to figure out a way to make the league more Talented more accessible for American players whether to open it up more. They're they're all out of really good questions about like where the league goes in the future. I think one last final thought I I. I like to spin on a Meta Emma last level sometimes times for one big question that's been asked in. MLS for the last year. Is this question of I. Think if you look at the numbers for the last four years in major major league soccer the number of the percentage of starting minutes for American born players has gone down every single season so families was started as a league. That will help. The United State's national team to compete and to help grow our young talented American players without having them be forced to Oh go to England or Germany or Spain That's in decline. Is that a is that a trend that can be reversed and how is this. CBS Any new rules about the rostering of players GonNa Affect that so I think those are all really big questions I know that The the league definitely wants to continue accentuating the academy players and the path from the Academy to League. That's GONNA have. CBS implications so. That's the one area like that. I think you get the most bang for your buck. That is the biggest challenge to Andrew's question which is if you can do a Dallas right and develop you know some of the best young players in the league and hang onto him for like three years. If you even hang onto Paxton pomme call for like two more years than than parody and then money is not nearly as important as the academy which is a lot cheaper. Yeah Got Wilson Mark I've I've got a few big bullet points that I wanNA make. It is Kinda been kind of jumbled up into an MLS theory. See that I've had or analysis thesis that I've been working on just in my brain over the course of the last couple years. I think there's two main schools of thought are two main At Pass that you can go as a franchise now in MLS three point now. I- crudely put it you know. Sporting Kansas City at their peak is probably the female version of one option. Probably the one that's the most plausible for the Colorado rapids. I'd throw in to an extent the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas in there. And I'd say oursel- tune extent under Jason Kreis. Bryce when they were playing money ball but that was two point. Oh and there's a bunch of complexities that make that example no longer not as relevant anymore and the other one is the Atlanta's the Seattle's titles both of the two La Franchises and NYC AFC so either a big fantastic soccer stadium big major DP's in everything focusing it all on winning now obviously in the case of Seattle Atlanta big revenue on through being in a throw ball stadium and having the ability to fill a significant portion if not the entire lower bowl and more of the robust can't even basically. It's you know it's international talented international managers very distinct flair in that approach. So Oh you know one of them I guess being more workmanlike and then the other one being a little bit more flashes. So I guess you could say I'd say wolves and Leicester City in pot one and then in probably Manchester City Liverpool Man United. At least the the superego man. United still in there as well and so there's A. There's a few things that we have have to acknowledge in there in that basically if you are in the pot one of the Sporting Kansas City you don't have as much room for error you know in the case of Atlanta last year and in case of L.. AFC this year. Both of them had a non-contributing major DP pity Martinez most expensive player on for Atlanta this year vase the in and out of Games Zico Bargo was effectively victory cigar in the playoffs last year and they spent fifteen million dollars on him. I don't know if the rapids collectively in their entire existence have have spent fifty million dollars worth of transfer fees in the entire team's existence. And then you know similarly I can't even remember it. Was Brian Rodriguez. I can't remember the name of the DP who l.. AFC recently sold. They made the playoffs in their first year having not play a big role and then basically sold him to open up an extra DP slot as well but when you spend a a lot of money like that and when you have a mastermind. Tom Martino team last year. Bob Bradley this year as well. You get value out of those other players and ultimately in both of these examples. Whether it's a Peter Vermes or an Oscar out where Bob Bradley or Bruce Arena. Both of them one in every single aspect of building a team they won the draft route. Serena's La Galaxy team. That was the dynasty of Emily's to point out there. I you draft picks Omar Gonzales and Aj de la Garza on I do draft picks in the history of Atlanta united were miles Robinson. Who is the best eleven defender this year and Julian Gristle who Baker probably sell for six figures a year or to Germany probably since he has a German passport so they want on the draft? Now I'd say Peter Vermes wins in the draft. I would say pariahs capable of doing that. I would say the rapids have done that at least one big diamond in the rough that they've gotten in the last couple of years. But when you miss on a Tommy Smith when you spend a bunch of money On a Tam International player are you. Just you don't have that much room for error. Peter Vermes for example every single one of his guys just they across the board. They didn't have that many misses. You know maybe the two they had there was a DP Argentine striker who got benched for dom wire and Dom Dwyer's breakthrough season that was the one MLS Cup and say you'll haunt quasi was was an absolute disappointment for them but the rest of the way save for this year because I think they just they got they got concha calf from Champions League in that derail the rest of their season but what they sell at Matt Beasley. WHO's not a DP and a fantastic centreback? They still have Tim Melia. They still have grams say they got grams. Uzi and Bat. Abbie's alert in the draft. That got Rodgers Spinoza. WHO's been a workmanlike international player and then a cavalcade of others who've been very successful so you just don't have as much room for error in all of those when you are a budget team you can swing and miss and swing and miss big with a lot of money on somebody when you are analogous Alexey? AFC A seattle sounders but ultimately those four teams that Andrew referenced in terms of the familiar faces being here the recent dynasties that we hadn mls whether it was DC united the most one point Oh the galaxy analysts two point. Oh and depending on what happens on November tenth we could say Seattle Toronto depending on what happens with C. C. L. WE start to throw grow Atlanta or Toronto or maybe L.. AFC in two to three years in those conversations every single one of these teams gets great value out of the draft Cristian. Roldan fell so far the year that he was drafting basically. Everybody was making a joke of how far he was following. They were using There's a reference when Johnny football fell in the NFL draft Mark Arca basically him texting back and forth..

"The actual Jason it aw the high line with Rabbi and read my name is Matt Pollard we are coming to you on the eve of all taking on Toronto FC as time recording Mark The Washington nationals created with the first Halloween in Pittsburgh or maybe that gets back the different friends and then but before that we're meeting up on the main drag going to the French Patisserie for some sort of spooky scary macaroni we'll see she really does love those macaroni okay may I ask all we trick or treating group at I don't know the side on a costume what he went he's in this program called Math nauseam stats in analytics nerd for like the Colorado rapids down so he was a Ninja but he had like division signs all over him which was becomes a week long I mean it millennials too but hauling becomes a week long thing you know I have noticed a general theme mark of basically for I'd say the three it's a minority but a very loud minority of people who are absolutely obsessed with Halloween you're obviously there there can be week long festivities depending on what the kids in what is planet money from a couple of years ago that basically quantified Christmas creep they basically people googling Mariah Carey's all I want her Christmas is you and then just general keeps on Thanksgiving and apparently there's a another loud minority of people who think that even in Minutes Mountain Standard Time and obviously Thanksgiving will be a single day or pair of Acton buzzkill here is ruining Halloween for all the I was going to add that I although based on my experience last week I thought that maybe a you know like that that would have been a little bit too close to home even for me I so I sat down with one Sebastian Andersen sobe running at the end of the some of the usual suspects would make it through some challenging road games and then obviously the in competition and then as time recording mark it is a repeat in just before we hit the record button Toronto see defeating land united and two very similar home favored more talented attacking team had more of the ball not really being a savage troll yeah that was funny his whole his whole like another much to see here after we've moved on but when you really when you have a lead and you can lock down the opposing player but I thought that they were and then they were easily exposed on the counter it was almost like the in a four three three and that the rapids were gonNA roll out there I right through the metal and if you get exposed right through the middle you're dead to rights like give them that much open space the parallel in this last game that we just watched the rob did at midnight on on a school night so but loose all by himself and so for for Toronto a couple of things that I saw but yeah Atlanta had the bulk of possession they had end Joseph Martinez got Knocked down basically twice he got knocked down starting goalkeeper in three years and his their their best right now he's he's they better which is kind of wild west making one hundred fifty thousand dollars a year and he's no johnny come Satell- goes out Seattle Toronto goes out and bangs into more goals than and wins the game and I tweeted this so if you if you think all sounds reminiscent I heard those names and I was like under the median and the average wage of mls players in the CBA expires this kind of like the they are either average or nondescript Zella yeah I mean I think that speaks well to the CVA. I think you know I hadn't really thought about it because I've at this podcast is going to in the month of February turn into a strike watch don't make sense the rookie minimums are really low the roster's aren't very big pretty low you know I don't know what the rookie minimum in Major League baseball is have players in major league soccer still getting roommates because they can't afford not to because they can't afford a new car yet so yeah no you're good point married I mean yeah yeah Governor Baxter La Times I think at K. Baxter and then there might be some numbers at Sigli looked back at the last couple of CVA renegotiations mark and in the most recent I wanna say Cherry Anri was still in New York Red Bulls they were all in on it as well and it was kind of collectively ax budget salary as well so for guys in the middle there who weren't gonNA BE GP's a pay jumping outside the league and basically you're stuck with that team but you can be moved at any time because of all the reentry and within the players association is it's going to be like the League you see any every articles from ESPN when it comes out to the players salaries there's you know like Mike Rela with the New York rebels a couple years ago who is nicknamed Grail Denia and had a that was fair so it's a three headed it's a three way fight the you're almost going to see potentially players are undervalued in the international market so they're not gonna find a whole lot of opportunities and I think thirty players in terms of salary that's more relevant from them growing the did we could get rid of all the guys in the supplementary draft pick up some guys from US mark I'll just make a couple more points on the conference finals on two very with Atlanta Bob Bradley back in obviously a couple of the Chicago fire in nineteen ninety the allegation game before and so- Toronto FC and Seattle come in players ended up getting the one goal but as I said previously Justin Martinez no goals no assists tonight the main centre forward you know you're only going to get a handhold chances and you just needed somebody to daily on making a hundred and ten thousand dollars ally manning in the playoffs against the aims kind of mirror descript and I think clearly showed that one manager had a better idea of what is not being able to go on August epsilon has probably his best game that I've seen from bench tonight and those managers were able to make things work and ultimately Atlanta was only overcome that the same thing could be said over L. AFC Toronto Seattle sounders overcame go ahead mark oh I'll I won't disagree with you except to say is death if definitely the reason why I think it's I think it's a legitimate way of any in a decade so clearly there disadvantage I feel like those guys we'll have the bulk of of of time in the bulk chances and they just didn't quite abyss final in four years which is kind of goofy the cool thing about it is I've been to the MLS Cup twice analysts cup playoffs twice and I went the next week when the rapids were in Seattle for That city loves you know feel say what you will about the Seattle sounders on the city will come alive the whole town will be decked out in Rave Cathro ball or or baseball or whatever else like they're legitimate real soccer going to be rooting for you know whoever plays the best game but but I think tails a good second yeah no well said Mark you know it's going to be again regardless of what we the the what sixty eight thousand change probably probably a good number of Toronto fans in Atlanta probably last year and then who is it before was a Toronto again so I mean it'll excited about that Moore narrates tag narrative Hashtag narrative and easy because you can kilo easy seven seven paragraphs that I had with Anderson mark kind of the same topic I posted a rapid's fans would least like to see when mls cop and it was a resounding majority gene and Toronto with seventeen percent so I'm going to assume then if rapid spans in the comments that came off and I co opted this into an ask hgh also the original tweet comes I'm `gate-keeping how is it that I've seen the same couple of teams at this point the four finalists that we had for MLS Cup this year the Supporters Shield winners and arguably early speaking if you were to do a correlation graph between you know running a lot of money and being very successful and generally teams to spend a lot of money do it has spent a lot of money in the continues to be a middling team but generally speaking if you WanNa speaking it's very easy for teams that spend a lot of money to at least be at the middle l.. "You know I don't know what the the rookie minimum in major league. Baseball is these days. But it's way more than the rookie minimum and MLS. I mean the rookie. Minimum Alaska. I think was sixty three thousand dollars last year like you had you have have players in major league. Soccer still getting roommates. Because they can't afford not to who are still driving for Uber. Because you know it's a little bit extra money who And who's still drive the same Nissan Maxima. They had in college because they can't afford a new car yet. No you're good point I mean yeah Tom Did you did you. Read Kevin Baxter's article not on L.. AFC of the galaxy. But it was like maybe two weeks ago about the CPA and everything. No I missed it. So he kind of free. Yeah GOVERNOR BAXTER LA Times. I think at K.. Baxter and then there might be some numbers at the end of it. He's the obvious one. There's a fake one this tweeting out crazy stuff about l.. AFC trying to get a star for the supporters shield. Don't go to that one. But in any case folks on so his he basically looked back at the last couple of C. renegotiations mark and then the most recent one that we had was all about free agency that was player movement that was player control and that was kind of very united at the time. Robbie Keane who was still at the galaxy. I WANNA I WANNA say Cherry Anri was still in New York Red Bulls. They were all in on it as well and it was kind of collectively. It was all of the players against the League. Basically saying that we wanted more flexibility. We want higher salaries. I think that had an increase in the Max Budget salary as well so for guys in the middle there who weren't gonna BDP's a pavement. Hey Mom for you know the map B.'s. Lers the Stephane fries etc and then also wanting actual player mobility. Because you know you got drafted either you take that deal where you try and find something something outside the League and basically you're stuck with that team but you can be moved at any time because of all the reentry and waiver draft and everything you don't have any control this draft Are this CBA. Based on people who Baxter spoken with both within the League and within the Players Association is it's going to be like the league versus some players versus some other players with those lower level players. The budget guys the guys making sixty thousand wanting more vis-a-vis the DP's in everything and you you see any every articles from ESPN. When it comes out to the players salaries come out and you know everybody talks about you? Know what happens and it's like so much smacktalk comes down because you know there's major. DP's more taking this as a retirement. Check and then there's budget players. You know like Mike Rela with the New York rebels a couple of years ago. Who is nicknamed Grail Denia and had like a goals and five assists and he was making the League minimum and he was starting over international players with European experience making hundreds of thousands of dollars and whether or not that that was fair? So it's a three headed. It's a three way fight the you're almost going to see potentially in the CPA. And I don't know how that goes now because you know obviously out the the lower the budget players. They need the league for the most part because American players are undervalued in the international market. So they're not gonNA find a whole lot of opportunities and I think Don Don garber and the other suits at. MLS are going to say. We probably value you know Carlos Vela Joseph Martinez a bastion Swinestein. or You know the upper ten twenty thirty players in terms of salary that's more relevant from them growing the sport from them getting merchandise getting sponsorship deals and just their general revenue stream than the guys at the bottom. I think some of those suits fairly unfairly could argue that we could get rid of all the guys in the supplementary draft pick up some guys from US L. L. and be fine from a money standpoint so I don't know how that handles out. That is another topic for a much podcast. That hopefully never has to happen because hopefully the season starts on time mark. I'll just make a couple more points on the conference finals on two very pragmatic playoff experienced managers. One against play play against managers with not as much recent playoff experience. Frank de Boer in his first year with Atlanta Bob Bradley back in less obviously on anomalous couple of the Chicago fire in nineteen ninety ninety seven but then you know his third playoff game all time since l.. AFC lost their one playoff game last year. And then just have the first game against against the allegation game before and so- Toronto. FC and Seattle come in they bunker there an amid block. They frustrate these center forward. And don't give them anything else. Als and they only give scraps to the other players around them. Ultimately one of those players ended up getting the one goal but as I said previously Justin Martinez no goals no assists tonight. Carlos Vela two nights ago no goals assists. He did draw the foul. The roads lead to the West a free-kick so I guess that's of some value but ultimately you frustrate the the main centre forward you know you're only going to get a handful chances and you just needed somebody get You know to step up and it was wrong for the Seattle sounders and and it was a cavalcade of players between Benazir. I'm not sure how to say his name. And then you know nick daily on making one hundred and ten thousand dollars ally manning in the playoffs against the New England patriots between you know the goal. He scored last year to save DC season and then obviously the two or three goals that he's had now for Toronto as well so it's kind of the two games aims kind of mirror descript and I think clearly showed that one manager had a better idea of what to do was more pragmatic outcoached. The opponent and was able to account for the talent gaffes. They had Seattle sounders misuse at the back with Chad Marshall Retired and Roman Torres. Not being able to go You know August Epson has probably his best game that I've seen from him. All Season and Toronto. See No playoff minutes for. Does the outdoor at their most important attacking piece of he asked me no playoff minutes for Omar Gonzales. Though he was bench tonight and those managers were able to make things work and ultimately Atlanta was not able to deal with a defensively stout team that was able to shut down their main attacking peace and pivot or adjust in any way to ultimately overcome that the same thing could be said over l.. AFC Toronto Seattle sounders overcame came a lot in these. Two Games overcame a lot just to get here and in that for me they're deserving finalists for MLS Twenty nineteen only at one of their go ahead mark. Oh I'll I won't disagree with you except to say that like I don't know that for me anyways the narrative of the more experienced just MLS playoff coach Is Is DEF. Definitely the reason why. I think it's a I think it's a legitimate way of looking at the things but It just doesn't feel it feels like too simple a narrative for me to say like Wildeboer doesn't have MLS playoff experience and Bob Bradley hasn't had any in a decade so clearly there disadvantage. I feel like those guys plan a game as as well as they can and they they I would say that In particular divorce case he kinda got unlucky like you know. Atlanta had the bulk of of of time in the bulk chances and They just didn't quite quite have the horses on this night. What I will say about Seattle although I'm not excited about this final because it's the third time we've had of this final in four years which is kind of goofy the cool thing about it is that Seattle finally gets a home analyst Cup Game Game and having that was one of. That's the only time I've not the only time I've been to the MLS Cup twice analysts. Cup Playoffs twice Both for the year the rapids were in it in two thousand sixteen When the rapids played the galaxy and I went the next week when the rapids were in Seattle for the first leg of that too late championship and Being in that press box being being in that space for the play offs was ridiculous and That city loves you know. Feel say what you will about the Seattle sounders on on their fans who all we all know invented soccer But it will be a wonderful atmosphere for the final game. The city will come alive The whole town will be decked out in rave grain It's not A. It's not the kind of town that is gonNA GONNA be selectively interested in soccer for a moment it's it and then go right back to throw a ball or or baseball or whatever else like they're legitimate real soccer town and so they're going to bring bring all that energy in it'll be great so I'm not saying I'm rooting for the sounders Not Really Leagues. I'M GONNA be rooting for you. Know whoever plays the best game but But I think you know there is one way to read this at like as much as I would have liked to have seen L.. AFC hosts Because they're new and because they bring a tremendous amount of energy sales a good second. Yeah no well said Mark. You know it's going to be again. Regardless of what we feel about either Seattle as sports market or sounders fans of the sounders Sigma Organization. This is going to be a spectacle I would expect the upper bowl the completely sell the sold-out seen this will be the. What sixty eight thousand change? Probably probably a good number of Toronto fans in the Upper Bowl and it will be it will be uninvited. At an atmosphere befitting meeting of the final for Amazon Twenty nineteen as good as it was in Atlanta probably last year and then who is it before was a Toronto again. So I mean it'll it'll be an exciting final and it'll be a good. It'll be a good moment and a good a good event in showcase of the League and in that Mark I think as you know media members we have to be excited excited about that Moore Narrates tag narrative hashtag narrative and definitely narrative recycle. Since it's you know the three peat here or I guess the trilogy now between Rave Green and the reds. It makes writing the post game for you really easy because you can kilo easy seven seven paragraphs restful of leg last time did it. But this time it entered editor. Yes we've got one more thing to talk about before we get to the interview. That that I had was savvy Anderson mark kind of topic. I posted a tweet from at rapid ninety. Six podcasts on twitter on A twitter poll after the conference semifinals asking who rapids fans would least like to see when mls cop and it was a resounding majority forty of the Seattle sounders who got fifty two percent of the vote out of one hundred sixty three votes and then pretty evenly spread between L. AFC with twelve percent Atlanta with eighteen A.. and Toronto with seventeen percent. So I'm going to assume then if rapid's fans are given the choice between the red pill and the Rave Green Pill that it is absolutely Seattle who they do not want to win. MLS COP but there was some cannon fodder in the comments that came off and I co opted this into an ask hgh. Also the original tweet comes comes from Andrew Lewis Foster who says I have issues with the analysts cop and I'm not sure I can make a nuance enough argument to not simply seem like I'm `gate-keeping. How is it that I've seen the same couple of teams at this point in the past few seasons? Is this a result of pay to play or played about paid to win. Excuse me or is it simply down to experience I shall say I should say mark the four finalists that we had for Emily Cup this year..

FC As time recording mark the Washington nationals have just taken the lead on the Houston Astros in game seven of the world series. He's mark. How're you doing tonight my friend and what plans do you have with the kitties associated with the first Halloween in Pittsburgh or maybe not that gets suck? It's been it's GonNa pour rain tomorrow so any plans we make gotta be ruined so the kids are splitting up and going with the different friends and then but before that we're meeting up on the main drag in our neighborhood where all the businesses have Their own I'm like trick or treating and my daughter who loves macaranas is going to the French Patisserie for some sort of spooky scary macaroni Horon giveaway. But I'm assuming that everybody in Pittsburgh is also GonNa WanNa lineup for free spooky macaroni on Halloween. So I don't know if this is GonNa work we'll see she really does love those macaroni. Okay May I ask what What the kids are going as this year What what's the hot kid like? This is what you absolutely have to be to be cool in the Halloween trick or treating group at. I don't know now I have little kids so at the seven year old is going as a dinosaur because she's really into TV. Show called Dino Dana and iggy basically did not decide on a costume but he went. He's in this program called math nauseam. So he's like he's the most likely to become a future either engineer. You're like our friend Musallam you'll hear or become a stats in analytics nerd for Like the Colorado rapids down on the road. All off Ron Taylor. so He'd like does math for fun and they had a party last week and he decided he was going to be the division Ninja so he was a Ninja but he had like division signs all over him which was pretty funny but like I think tomorrow is going to go as a Ninja mostly. Because he couldn't decide decide what he wanted to be. But the other thing that that you may not know is when you have kids. Halloween becomes a week long. I mean the millennials too but hauling becomes a week long thing. You know like the the week before Halloween Party and then there's the Friday night before and everyone gets dressed up and like I think people get dressed up like a solid week here in Pittsburgh so you know I have noticed a general theme mark of basically for I'd say the three final major holidays that we have in the United States in the calendar year basically basically consume the entire month. There are a lot of people not a lot of people. It's a minority but a very loud minority of people who are absolutely obsessed with Halloween in and do not want either Christmas or Thanksgiving to creep on that. Who effectively have co-opted Halloween October? Thirty years to be the entire month of October. You're obviously there. There can be long festivities depending on what the kids in the work schedule is in your own family in terms of family. Getting any getting together for Thanksgiving I'm a really good episode of Freakonomics. I think are now not freakonomics. Maybe it's planet money from a couple of years ago that basically quantified Christmas creed they basically basically it's exponential growth after Labor Day weekend and the study one of the metrics that they had for evaluating it was Rate of people googling Mariah. Carey's all I want for Christmas is you and then just general like spotify youtube at Cetera people streaming Christmas music and so Christmas Christmas music obviously takes over the entire month of December for a lot of people. They feel that it keeps on Thanksgiving. And apparently there's a another loud minority of people who think that even in starts in the beginning in September I like to have holidays beginning end when they actually have so for me. Mark Halloween is not started. It will not start for another three hours and sixteen in Minutes Mountain Standard Time and obviously Thanksgiving will be a single day or a pair of days and Christmas is just one day. I do not have twelve days of Christmas in my family. And nor or do you as you I presume not even a little bit but I I was gonNA say Captain Buzzkill here is ruining Halloween for all the I was going to add that I have the only original costume by original anomaly. Presume actually went out and bought a new costume this year for the family. I bought a Richard Nixon mask so I thought that would be fun although based on my experience last week I thought that maybe a jailhouse jumpsuit might have been good. But it didn't let me up the allegheny county any jail so unfortunately I don't I don't really also you know like That that would have been a little bit too close to home even for me. I you think so already then. We've got a great but another abbreviated show for you tonight listeners. All we running part three of our wrap kids series in this episode so I sat down with one. Sebastian Andersen sobe running at the end of the show but first mark let us briefly touch on the events of late a major league soccer when last. Yes we spoke. We were going into the conference semifinals. Everybody was super excited to see if some of the usual suspects would make it through some challenging road games and then obviously asleep the big one. Everybody was talking about was traffic. Oh lived up to the hype but in a different result than we saw previously in LLC getting their first ever win over the galaxy the in competition and then as time recording mark It is a repeat in. MLS COP and I would think fair to say to road upsets in the conference finals. Seattle title sounders defeating L.. AFC three to one last night at time of recording on and then just before we hit the record button. Toronto see defeating land united and two very similar Games in terms of the road team be extremely pragmatic taking some of their chances lowering the opponents asleep in scoring against the run a play out of nowhere and then the home favored more talented attacking team had more of the ball. Not really knowing how to react once. They ultimately conceded the lead and then ultimately were defeated inconceivable lead mark your thoughts on these past few conference finals and Brian Smith or being a savage troll. Yeah that was funny. His whole his whole like like responses I thought the law. I'm not going to go all the way back to the conference. Championship Games the conference semifinal games because another much to see hereafter we've moved on but I was surprised at L.. AFC They just looked. They looked a little soft in the middle. I I mean I thought Vela looked really good and then he kind of faded. which happens when you when you really when you have a lead and you can lock down the opposing player? But I thought that they were. Oh really sloppy In the beginning of the game in the midfield especially in transition they kept moving their midfielders forward and then they were easily exposed on the counter. It was almost like the game tactically that I was most interested in in the whole year for Colorado was the game against Houston where we knew Houston was going to strike them on the counter with their wings in a four three three and that the rapids were GonNa roll out there there fullbacks and get up really high and that was where you would expose them and this was the opposite of that that like the midfield got up to high and they got exposed. I right through the metal. And if you get exposed right through the middle you're dead to rights like you know they had all these plays where like Jordan Morris racing down the middle of the field or Ladera racing down the middle of field of racing down the middle of the field. I'm like do you can't do that. You can't give them that much open space the parallel in this last game that we just watched tonight of Atlanta. I was blessed to be able to watch both games back to back. 'cause I couldn't stay up that late because you know that that L. AFC Ten talking the ROB did at midnight on on a school night so but anyways but the the the a similar was happening in this Atlanta match where Essentially they were letting Joseph Martinez Adjusted Montana getting loose all by himself and so for For Toronto Toronto just a matter of like we know that Joseph is hard to slow down or stop. He's GonNa get loose eventually you know. Hopefully we can contain him. So those a couple of things that I saw But yeah Atlanta had the bulk of possession. They had some really good chances in the most important thing in this game was that. PK You know when the game was one to nothing Early on and Joseph Martinez got Knocked down basically twice. He got knocked down. My wanted defenders in Michael Bradley took him out completely for a PK. And then Quentin Westberg steps up and makes a huge by the way. Quentin Westberg is like their third Starting goalkeeper in three years and his their their best right now. He's he's they basically decided that Clint Irwin was good But Alex Bono is better than they decided that. Alex Bono is good but Quentin Westberg is better which is kind of wild west making one hundred fifteen thousand dollars a year. And he's Johnny come the lately. He's thirty three years old And he steps up and he gets palm on that ball by Joseph and then Satell- goes out data. TORONTO GOES OUT AND BANGS into more goals than and wins the game one. She's an absolute stunner from nickname de Leon who another journeyman in analysis making a hundred and seventy five thousand dollars a year so lasting also. I tweeted this so if you if you think all sounds reminiscent. I heard those names and I was like these guys are. Nobody's how much they're making and I went on the MLS P A website to check it out and saw that they were you know basically making well under under the media and the average wage of mls players in the CBA expires this off season. You know you're looking at when you look at guys like that where the role players step up up and do something and the guys who make five six million a year are kind of like the they are either you know average or nondescript Zella Ella Assists Joseph Martinez goals. No assists exactly Pity Martinez had a really nice assist aggressive but But Yeah I mean I think that speaks well to the CVA. I think you know I hadn't really thought about it because I've been in denial but now that I look at it the C. Expires Matt in like three months. Yeah I renegotiated the CBA at for the science. He'll really nervous that this podcast is going to in the month of February. Turn into a strike watch and a contract attorney special. You know like that we're going to have to do a Lotta time figuring out 'cause there's all sorts of weird things about him Alaska. Don't don't make sense the rookie. minimums are really low The roster's aren't very big. The guaranteed contracts are pretty not doc guaranteed and most importantly the salary on the low end of the League is pretty low..

"Hello rapid's fans and welcome to another episode of holding the High Line with Rabbi and read my name is Matt Pollard I am coming to you on the evening of Monday DOC Tober fourteenth two thousand Nineteen Rabbi will not be joining me tonight it is the off season the rapids are not in the playoffs and even if they were the playoffs hasn't started yet so I gave mark the week off I've got two things that I want to touch on and then we will get to part one of a three part series the rap kids that we have mentioned in previous episodes Tonight I'll be talking with Sam vines this segment was recorded back in late July Sam had already established himself as the starting left back under then conor Casey who is still the interim head coach of the rapids. I talk to Sam about his soccer journey discovering a soccer ball growing up and playing the game in Colorado Springs how he came to the rapids some US national team stop and a bunch of other fun stuff so I hope you enjoy that so we running assode one which is Sam fines this week and then in the next coming weeks probably next week in the following week a coal Bassett and then Sebastian Anderson and that order really really good evergreen content from the guys and I hope that you enjoy that but I've got two things that I want to touch on briefly first of all past couple of shows mark and I have alluded to or bonfire campaign that we wanted to do making shirts to commemorate the twenty nine thousand nine Colorado rapids bizarro season. The campaign is now officially live it live on about three hours ago from when I'm recording and you can go to that you can get to the campaign by going to bonfire or Dot Com backslash holding the highline Pids bizarro season that's all with the dashes and then backslash at the end of that The campaign will run on through November third and then if we sell a number of shirts to meet the limited bonfire has then the hopefully ship by November the twelve they are twenty dollars in one thousand nine hundred because mark and I have a very very funny humor I come in four different colors they call it cardinal but it's the closest thing that they had to burgundy those kind of a light grade the black option and then there's an ice blue kind of the the light blue rapids blue color that you have it says holding the highlight on the front holding the high line with Rabbi and read twenty nine gene bizarro season it's got gotta see it's got you guys going for a ball with one of them slide tackling because mark and I loved kids and then to mountains with kind of a river flowing through it's a rapid if you will and then it's got the Bizarro season highlights on the back of the shirt as well we did take a few of your suggestions so thank you very much to those of you you who brought in the shirt sizes are available from extra small all the way through three X. L. Those are Unisex sizes they've got sizes sizing guide for that for anybody who wants to look at that male female or non binary so head on over to bonfire dot com slash holding the highline pids bizarro season if you would like to get one of those shirts we got some pretty positive feedback that people were actually interested and this is a nice little experiment it's an alternative to the mugs that we have and then the the thing that I wanted to touch on for those of you who did not see all or whom are not avid listener listeners of extra time at mls soccer dot com we have a master any citing Pablo is on extratime last Thursday with bobby war side and other resident demon lover and then Susannah Collins talk generally about some US national team stuff lots of playing and coaching for the kids so I would encourage you to go check that out if you WanNa reminisce about the good old days of Pablo Mastroeni and maybe him reflecting a healthy way about what went wrong and the twenty seventeen season that ultimately led to his dismissal from the club and he was also on a club and country for the pre show and the post show for the US national teams seven nil victory over Cuba in the nation's League so good to see the Pablo's getting out of the house and doing things you know I thought he was effective in terms of what he did I wouldn't say that he's a media person based on his disdain that he had at times for the media when I was covering the team and certainly when he was player and head coach for the rapids but it's nice to see him doing something getting out of the House and I'm curious to see what's next for pop oh you know the head coaching job for the rap was probably his dream job unless maybe he wanted to take the US national team job he did do some brief things with Gary Smith in Nashville Phil might have been last year maybe the year before obviously has that relationship from the two thousand ten season but I'm not really sure what's next for Pablo on that front you know he's got enough relationships built up in amongst other people in mls who either are in a coaching role or who are in a front office role but I'm not sure if that's what he wants the timing or the opportunity is going to be right and I think in the few years that he's been out of work I think analysts is definite gently up the ante on what the expectations are for a new head coach so I think you know it's definitely above to where you know Robin Frazier had to be an assistant on a couple of really really good teams or you have to have some significant foreign or international experience and clearly Mastroeni doesn't have that he alluded to in the interview some of the things what he's learned so I'd be curious to see what's next opportunity looks like or what he would be looking for I'm not sure that it's anything more than an assistant coaching Gig Working for a guy where he already has a relationship so then maybe that networking gets him a little bit of an but then rapids twitter was having some fun with thinking that the is things usually happen in threes Anthony Hudson started a podcast mark neither bantered about that last week master any was on an episode I was joking that maybe conor Casey probably but in my fan fiction would be starting his own podcast where he'd be interviewing other balls and having a beer with them about and talking about football and then a couple of other people suggested that a Oscar should he get the US nat- or not the US national team job excuse me the opportunity the open head coaching job at Orleans city sc than certainly he would be invited back onto extra time for an interview US Cabrera former Colorado rapids manager left the club under precarious circumstances that I won't recount here was with FC Dallas won a couple of trophies but not an MLS club mls cup kind of maxed out with that team in terms of what he was going to be able to win in the media and then he's now coaching Tijuana in league Max Their Table Right now club Tijuana's normally Ben a pretty chaotic team in terms of roster turnover and being very up and down in League Amax they're not one of the old guard blue buds blue bloods they haven't won a trophy since two thousand love and that was the day finished first and leak and the APP mature back in two thousand twelve so Pablo's excuse me now Pablo Oscar has brought some stability the club in terms of results in terms of roster and that's an opportunity that's a job where if he does something really good he'd be looked at more seriously for a head coaching job for a national team in central South America he definitely be on the radar for l. tree should something happen regarding Tulsa Martinos jobs secure ready with that position I think it was pretty clear after what happened with the US national team that US soccer's made their statement implies Salihi regarding a non American non native English speaking coach taking the national job or not even being considered for relatively nope rattling made a move that he thought was good for his career whether or not he'd even be interested in the Orlando job given their situation financially and kind of that they've been owning over coach pretty much every single two years so you have to win regularly where for club Tijuana just being anything other than chaotic and in the top half of the table and the Max's probably good for him to hang around and then maybe springboard off into a better job and I'm not sure the Orlando job right now is anything more than a lateral move or maybe even a step down for him but I'd be curious to see if these if Casey or Paret do make an appearance on any form of soccer podcast in the future to complete the three former rapids managers appearing in a podcast capacity but any case that's all the stuff that I have for you this week folks go on head on over to bonfire dot com slash holding the highline pizarro season we did tweet out the link had that pinned to at rapids ninety six casts and then also on my twitter feed include Lincoln the show notes for those of you who can't find it at well without further ado here is segment one of a three heart series the rap kids my interview with Sam Vines from back in late July we'll see next week probably with part to my interview with Basset we'll see you then folks so Sam taking back when was your first memory of discovering a soccer ball going the car wreck the hostages as by lighten loves soccer was a social activity thing Z. Z. so for that and then young miss he might be sissies for few days Marxism away it's kind of funny you mentioned score goals you've been outside back you know what either the okay please amazed at how American soccer from a development standpoint has evolved in terms of what we knew five years ago ten years ago when doubt.

"The rapids look decent against a team that is one of the better sides in M._l._S. so? I think that that's always an important thing to to point out I think I said they were GONNA lose two to nothing and they only lost two to one so. That's my that's my good thing is all the other thing is that that's a good thing is that I actually got a prediction right for once. The other time I got trashed on on Reddit and twitter was one. I predicted the rapids. <unk> tank the L. Against the L. A._F._C.. Actually one <hes> like I said I don't like predicting but <hes> you know I think I think <hes> to say that. They lost but looks better than I thought they were GonNa Ana against a very good. M._l._S. side is is damning by faint praise. <hes> you know I think the that Jonathan Lewis keeps showing up is another way of looking at this. I think you said it well by saying saying that monetary. The probably scored on his own goal but I'm happy that Sebastian Andersen got accredited to him but the reality was that goal was completely created by Jonathan Lewis especially the way he looped that ball in an over and an infront <hes> <hes> he's just been a delight to watch. He's been really on fire for the rapids up till now. What was your good thing that <hes> yet Sam Nicholson again be a really competent super-sub? There's been some questions hurled at me on twitter about about why isn't he starting and I've still heard a couple rumblings that maybe they're being a little bit more cautious with that hamstring especially when you know Anthony Hudson Really Push Sam Nicholson when he was dealing with the back issue when it was it was something that they had managed but it was something that had to be aware era of and then he pulls up in the game at l.. E._F._C.'s so I think they're being a little bit more cautious with him and then Jack Price stepping in you know the foot appears to be okay and all things considered giving you know playing almost sixty minutes down a man and everything I thought he did okay noci Kamara Mar that was a little bit problematic but you know Andre Shinya she backing his natural position you know as a solo forward up top thought had some good moments. I just you know kind of like the New England game a couple of weeks ago. It's really hard for me to truly analyze this game because after the third minute was just it was so weird that you know how many other times the rest of the year other APP it's going to be at home up a goal but down a man. Are we really gleaming anything in terms of the tackles tactical decisions of the substitutions or anything like we can pull out individual moments bits of individual mistakes in anything like I'm not judging this team for the shot difference or possession or anything being down a man you know I if anything I echo your point that I think no matter what the circumstances are. I think Jonathan Lewis is the APPs is absolutely the straw. That serves serves the train from whiteside from wide standpoint. I think if there's no there's no red cards Sebastian Anderson and kyw cameras and here. I think we're having a very different conversation. I guess on that no mark. Where do you WANNA start with bad stuff? I mean you you said it really well. which is the third minute red card changes? Everything and it's one of those things where if you're an. I know that I've seen this conversation elsewhere. I don't know if we've had it but <hes> I think <hes> I think I heard this conversation extra extratime radio a couple years ago if you're watching a neutral game neutral English premier league game where you're not a fan of either team a neutral M._l._S. game a neutral game of any kind and a red card happens especially early in the game. I am inclined personally to turn it off. Yeah like we live. We live in a world where there's and this is an insane thing to say considering ten years ago. You were lucky to be able to find one the soccer game a weekend that you could watch on T._v.. But we live in a world now where you can stream any one of probably a dozen soccer matches almost at any given time right when when we hit that sweet spot where M._L._S. End Europe a Europe are overlapping in August September and October you can wake up on a Saturday morning at three o'clock in the morning and catch a Chinese game. Take a quick catnap and then <hes> premier league at Five A._M.. Right Mountain Yup and watched one dodge that game and then at seven o'clock nine o'clock eleven o'clock slots you can watch any one of three or four different games in three or four different leagues and you can pretty much do that all the way till the end of Sunday and it's insane so you don't have to sit through watching one team bunker and hang on for dear life with having gone down to ten men like you don't have to do that so with the rapids you're watching them. Go down to ten men at the thirty thirty third minute and you're thinking to yourself like they're not GonNa win this match. Maybe they hold on draw this match and for a while they look like they would you know they gave the goal in the fortieth minute and then they gave up the go ahead goal eighty third but for for awhile from forty five to eighty three they really looked not great like they were hanging on for dear life but after the seventy fifth minute you start to think to yourself like they look terrible there getting impounded. Everybody's you know New York has the ball the whole time in the shooting shooting shooting on them but maybe they pull this out. Maybe this is just one of those magical games and finally the Dan broken that was that but <hes> but that's that's the bad thing is that you know oh <hes> savvy have the the Rad. <hes> you know you you Kinda feel for him because he caused the team three points but on the other hand what the hell was he doing starting at <hes> right-wing any ways I mean like there's is kind of strange match all around for that reason we also had <hes> Danny Wilson playing at defensive mid again alongside Jack Price <hes> Kaikoura out with <hes> I think it it was listed as a back problem Matt my understanding as well and so you get <hes> enriching you shaky who is a very different striker. I think she shakey's been most valuable as a sub four K. Kamara particularly because Kamara <hes> is such a different striker. You know he wants to have the ball he so physical <hes> he's so good <hes> back to goal <hes> and she music is GonNa go through the lines. He's GonNa Attack Drizzly <hes> he comes at angles which is something Kamara doesn't necessarily do the other thing is that she knew Sheikh. He's pretty good with Kamara on the field at the same time <hes> or with Jonathan Lewis <hes> and here he didn't have to work off of so there's a lot of that I think the you know the red cards really important to note everything after that is kind of <hes> <hes> window-dressing Matt Your thought on the bad thing. I don't know that I want to go to bad thing necessarily but I think I think it would be a useful exercise for us to break down a couple of really key officiating decisions especially since I was a reporter for this Game D._S.. She Park so I got to answer to Rupaul reporter questions of Chris Penn so and his staff so I guess let's start chronologically mark. We already touched on it a little bit but the Red Card Sebastian Anderson that I think you and I were pretty even on there. Were some I'd say differing. Opinions from the fifteen thousand thousand plus reported people who are at D._S.. G on Saturday and I was fending off a lot of people on twitter as well but so I asked the question let's go through the poor reporter responses earmark listeners. I am reading this word for word verbatim as reported it and as I got the answers back from Kris Benson Staff <hes> what was the primary reason reasons for the Red Card Sebastian Anderson and then I kinda listed in parentheses point of contact level of force studs up etc and the response I got back was Anderson committed a tackle the endangered danger the safety of his opponent using a straight leg coming over the top of the ball with his studs making contact above the opponent's ankle from what I saw it was anywhere from it was definitely above where the Shin Guards were on Mozzarella. I would say maybe top OP of Sebastian Anderson's tow was probably right at the base of Matsushita's knee and then all the way down and maybe you know the top third of Matsushita's leg so I'm getting some banter back and forth on twitter on this one mark and on every single one I responded it was studs-up. He didn't get the ball he went in with force and it was an area that he wasn't protected. I E where the boot or the Xinguar was protecting him for me. Those three things quantify absolutely and in Chris Pencils agrees endangering the safety of the opponents nights. I is there any real disagreement that we have on here with the decision and the reasoning behind the decision I think I think you said it well. I think I agree with Chris Benso I he's he's a ref. I generally respect and agree with to be honest. I mean I find him to be a no nonsense guy. I kind of liked the guy where you know when when refs get argued with by players you look at their face. They have this look on their face like would you stop with your B.. S. Like I'm not I'm not changing my yellow guard back and you know you're not changing the guard back right now. You're just being whining. I always respect that rock and so I think he he generally gets bright. He commands a pretty good game. <hes> yeah I mean I I thought <hes> Anderson didn't didn't make a smart challenge there and and it was probably dangerous <hes> so okay. Let's move on to the second goal for New York City of see that was unassisted to retreat drita in the eighty third minute was a sub and on the initial play mark the ball is played from the N._y._C. of defensive half by Maxi Morales a bear and Martha Rita. You know who's kind of the he's the he's. He's the he'll or the nemesis of the rapids in this game drawing the red card and now being involved in this are roughly marking even with the centrebacks Tommy Smith and Molles Abu Bakar on the Cross there was a question about whether or not my three two and potentially Matriochka <hes> who's in a wide role and not involved in the play until the goal whether or not they were offside. Tommy Smith was the last defender on here. Ultimately the ball goes towards moderates. M._L._S. Abu Bakar maltreated does not make a challenge for it. He's a little bit ahead of the ball and lawless Boubacar just heads it down. I assume looking for a Danny Wilson or Jack Price in the middle of the box in the middle of the field to clean it up. Nobody steps to the ball and nobody else's their Matsushita's able to retreat to excuse me is able to run onto it immensely slotted into the bottom corner past Clint Irwin so and I heard there were there were a number of rapids officials who were very upset about this. I heard some we'll call it choice language in the hallways on the north side of the building about that overall overall decision this gets into a really Harry place remark one. I haven't seen a really good angle that absolutely shows it for sure in terms of that. I'm set up folks in the press box. Almost you know right at the center circle so to speak. I did not see the actual sequence live so so I can't speak to that but none of the right plays in the stadium were that good and the only good one that we actually saw was one of the E._S._p._N.. Plus cameras there was actually used by Bobby warshaw on this week's iteration of instant replay to review the play mark and even then still there's is not really an even angle. It looks like it might be but you know just based on how the angle of the shot is when you actually get the shot. It looks like Tommy Smith is the last one back prior to Clint Irwin and so for that for me that's onsite and then even then and this would be a play of indirect offsides folks. Obviously Makita doesn't make an initial play on the ball and by the time while those heads down. That's a new place so he's not offsides but then there's the question of indirect offsides folks you see this a lot and instances where say you have an offensive player who's in an offside position and obstructing the view the goalkeeper or maybe a player takes a shot to where the goalkeeper has to judge whether or not it's a play to that player. WHO's offsides role whether or not that happens but no N._Y._C. A._F._C.? Player actually touches which is it on the play that is in question for offsides so in that you have to judge at that point that one matry was off side so that we don't have any video evidence for and then to you have to judge them. A treatise positioning was enough that it forced. I Abu Bakar to play the header only where he could this for me. Folks is one of the most subjective calls that you have in the overall laws of the game for those reasons I agree with the decision and while it is many things while it is questionable while it would be nice if we had another video angle that absolutely showed whether or not the play was offsides the one thing that for me it is absolutely not is clear and obvious it is everything and for those reasons..

"Journalism when the DOT com boom happened and is way different from what's happening now in twenty nineteen going into two thousand twenty and so as newspaper companies go about changing their structure and everything I think that's created a lot of turbulence and unfortunately in a lot of these spaces whether it's the the buzzfeed's of the world's and everything unfortunately a lot of what drives thing is this? Can you get clicks or can you produce content to where people are buying stuff in one to where people are buying a subscription or giving you money your Patriot or what have you and one of the things they pointed out is either that they this article I believe leap from Vox was pointing out is either the revenue streams for online journalism is going to have to change fundamentally or writers are going to have to be far more careful and deliberate about the kind of stuff that they read if you're tired tired of Click Beatty ads and everything just being about single quotes and just stuff that has absolutely no content or no value or you know as the which Harry Potter House or you kind of stuff then you need to actively not click at that stuff and you need to actively go out and find the stuff that you find value in and read that scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and if that's from an outlet that has consistently producing that content then at least turn to the current model unfortunately if you WanNa keep that going you have to partially be be part of the crowd funding that is sustaining that entity and I don't have a good answer for you as to what you could have done differently mark. I don't think this is an indictment of your quality or even the structure of the Denver Post. Unfortunately there's just a significant significant population of the people who we're going to ever post for stuff aren't going there for rapids coverage and I think there are a lot of other entities that unfortunately should have that finger pointed out before they're pointed at you. One thing that I talked about I'm when <hes> this was back in Undergrad I was in the marching band and Undergrad and we were talking about what we could Redo to recruit more people from the freshman class and we were having a big leadership meeting of all the section leaders drum majors and captains and everything and at one point our band director his through his hands up and said you know unfortunately the biggest recruiter for whether or not people want to be in marching band is how good the football team's doing and unfortunately a lot of and we've seen this in our own coverage mark of whether or not people want to read about the rapids is is are the rapids good. Are they doing anything fun. Do they have any big players that you know the plebs sports fan in Denver knows about and unfortunately that hasn't happened since two thousand sixteen. Well don't say three things real quick off that one of them is and this is this is a I'm taking out the bad now a little bit but one of the things that I've thought of <hes> one of the things that's interesting in sports writing for any sports writer is we are beholden to do a good story and one of the facilitators of a good story is a good department of Communications Our director of Communications <hes> and it is really valuable to be able to I mean I remember a couple years ago. You know we come up with ideas. I have to come up with an idea for my call him every week right. What's my angle? What's the thing what's interesting or I want to interview a player and so I got to figure out like WHO's interviewed? It's a good interview and you find out who's is a good interview in who's got a good story by doing a lot of interviews and getting a lot of bad stories. It's a lot easier for a director communications. Call you up and be like Yo. I'M GONNA pick to a story. You'RE GONNA WANNA write it. It's a really good one so a couple of years ago the U._S.. One the national team sent out a thing saying hey we're going to do a media date. Just for Mallory pugh Iran come on down asking a question. Do you want and I came down and I ask questions than it was an article that wrote itself like you know. Local local girl makes good like local girls make good it was it was an easy story. These two women were were from Colorado. They grew up in Denver and and it was a natural. It was the easiest thing in the world. That story only happened because a jerk communications was smart enough to say this is a story that I can pitch at a bunch of writers and they'll all right it. We don't have that but in a leg work to create the environment such that stuff writes itself it shows the value of a good media and communications. We don't have that in Colorado right now. The the rapids don't have a director of communications and so nobody in and by the way in my entire six years of writing on the Colorado rapids nobody ever did that. Nobody from the rapids ever called me up and said you know who would be a really good story for you is so the only thing the only version that is with the homegrown they did a good job accroding their homegrown so props to the rapids on that they did a pretty good job <hes> promoting their D._p.'s when when they came in of of saying like hey let's have a big press. Conference is a big deal but I never got pitched on the story so that's that's one thing to say had to do with the struggle of the Cook Click Beatty model and the Denver Post the Denver Post's editors who were did a good job of my articles but they'd never the hell to do with me to be honest Matt like they would they would put a new title on on the article on backpass like I used to use a quote from Star Trek or <hes> you know a song lyric as my as my title they would always take a line out of context and put a question mark on it is conor casey genius. You know our the rapids GonNa win another game. This season is like I didn't write those titles at all somebody else did and I would get hammered on read. Had it like People Wanna read. It would be like the Denver Post is trash or you know. This writer is writing. Click beatty stuff. Why is he just doing this up? We're having headline. Are I wrote the same stuff I've written for six years of tactical analysis and deep dives. Lives and pontificating and wondering about the overall structure of major league soccer or the C._V._A.. Coming up Max or whatever and the editors with throw a quick bay tidal on there and some people would like it and some people wouldn't <hes> so yeah. That's that's just away. That's just the way the the bee's works. Was that the third thing marker. was there another thing that was the second and I can't remember what the third one why I had another idea about about a thing but <hes> you know it definitely had to do with the you know. Oh I remember member there was you're right very good. The last thing I'll say is I've had a couple of people say politely like Oh you know keep writing. It's you know you'll you'll find someone to pay for it soon and I don't i. I will probably write more <hes> I don't. I and I don't know what I'll keep writing on the Pittsburgh site but <hes> I don't think people fully understand the time commitment that the writing takes <hes> leaving aside an interview where you have to call somebody up an interview them than transcribe grab the interview. When I did backpass every week it typically took me about eight hours of work two hours to watch the game originally two hours to watch the game a second time in either create gifts off of it or just just write down ideas I had or something like that and then two to four hours of writing <hes> and you know and maybe also editing so that's eight hours a week <hes> to churn out the the content <hes> you know sometimes like back in the day before I got paid too for the for the post like I can bust off a back pass and I would do it out of the pure pure love of the game but it's it's definitely a little bit harder once once you've been paid a little bit for it and then you're not so I will probably write again? I will probably write it for free but I do want people to understand that like you. Don't just Kinda like work for free for eight hours a week for nothing Niagara through market. Oh I'd say a independent of actually watching the game I would say actual preparation and material for this podcast the recording of it and then the post editing and then the social afterward between you and me that's probably easily eight hours between the two of us and so you know on that mostly you who though absolutely mostly you matt does all the editing so props to Matt well this worked out great when like we would record in your basement and so I come over to your house and like you have food and snacks and beer than it was even now. It's a little bit more even but in any case speaking of things being on even at the end of the day mark of the Colorado rapids were defeated by N._y._C. This past Saturday at Dick's sporting goods park. The final score was two to one N._Y._C.. A._F._C. comes out and has a lot of possession but not much chance creation very little possession with a purpose if you will and then in the sixth minute Jonathan Lewis picks off a pass and runs the length wide say center midfield all the way through to the end of the touchline sends a cross in and the goal is credited to Sebastian Anderson his I goal professionally in major league soccer. I've seen a couple of replays mark where I kinda wonder if Moth Rita got a touch on it and was before or after Seb Anderson in any case the box score still says that Sebastian Anderson has the goal and Y C continues to possess. That's the ball and then all you know what completely goes down. The Drain in the thirty third minute mark mouth three to has the ball on the far sideline Sebastian Anderson is going to make a challenge for Mrs on the ball kind of falls backwards a little bit and then goes is with his studs up to the upper leg. Maybe lower part of the knee of Matsushita Chris Penn so immediately reaches for the back pocket and Sebastian Anderson is given his first goal and his first red card as a professional soccer player all within the span of less than a half hour <hes> then you have a bear score five minutes before halftime on a nice volley off the chest of across by Maxine Morales Tommy Smith pulled out of position and that a couple of minutes later it appears that Tim Howard strains his calf his right calf an subbed out right on the brink of halftime four Clint Irwin then the second half is you're pretty typical the rapids being defensive team and not having the ball and also being down a man Marc Samuelson comes in and they have a couple of good counter-attack on our attack opportunities over ultimately it is Alexandra Makita who s'mores and the eighty third minute. We'll talk about that goal in a little bit on a long cross that lawless Abu Bakar heads down Nicholson with a couple of exchanges in there with Emmy Gara the Centerback Ackford N._y._C. A._F._c. one of which was right on the edge. Maybe on the line of the penalty area not called and then one just outside the penalty area it was called and Emma Gara was given a yellow card. You had Keegan Rosen Berry miss an opportunity off of a set piece in the final minutes and ultimately the game ends by a score of two to one another game in which the rapids lose at home to an Eastern Conference opponent and another game in which the rapids lose having given up a red card at home markle throw to you. What was your a good thing from this match <hes>.

"Coach. Geno. Bob, Bradley, go, really true. And if you're including Chili's, you know, who flamed out spectacularly in the most boss way with league max, he's now coaching for midtable team in in league Amax us. He has Mexican by parts. So mitt you. I I to go down this list. Now, I'm going to go the media, let's tonight listeners and look at every single person who's ever coached. She this USA. And are they in a better situation right now? Maybe that's the key to everything. Maybe you just got to hunt down people who were the the scores of the goats. And then think that that's the answer last question who's a manager that you know, is available or as been recently fired anywhere in the soccer world, who you would absolutely cringe and one of them it and die if they got named to the Colorado Rapids Josie Marino. Marina. Wow, that's that's a tough call. That's a tough call. For me. I don't wanna be. I don't wanna be patronized by the special again, this is purely from a media standpoint. I just I would I would stop going to to to post game media. Vail ability, just because I know that I wouldn't get anything out of it. And that would be a that would be a fantastic like the the hard knocks like Elliot see special on ESPN. Plus that would be a fascinating thing for them to see with the Colorado Rapids in the same way that the Sundell in one was like watching the soccer documentary equivalent of the Titanic like me Josie Marino would walk into the season. And instead of just like, oh, let's see if we can see out of the iceberg Josie Marino sear into the iceberg. Yeah. I don't think he's ever Cummings a major league. So he didn't only because they can't afford to pay him. But for me, it's probably Sam Allardyce. I just Sam is. So I mean as as much as Josie Marino's style is I will take a one nothing. Leading cling to it with my icy death, grip like Sam out ISIS style is even more dull than that. It is like hit long kick it long ticket long. Maybe hope for a bit of magic from one player and then bunker in. I mean, he might be uneven less. Interesting coach Josie Marino who at least can coach defense. Now. I agree with you Mark on to other things alive for the fat. Check porous. You're right. Markelle, robin. Frazier, formerly the New York right bowls now Toronto FC, and then racing club Dade win the clauses in the Argentine Superleague, which you know is pretty rough dude. I know all my stuff, I'm so smart well done so that let's move on to ask H G H L Mark, and we will start with a question from Tyler may be Tyler ass is pork Smith trying to get fired. Should I buy him a map of all others a map of all other soccer leagues in the world for the love of all this? Holy Why's he so infatuated with the English champions. Lemme Mark explain response that was his that was his response to my dropping the bus ability. Pulp lament is in the running pop lament was a. Another name that got floated to me by a source with some knowledge of who's applied for the job. So you know, I mean Clement has better a better record and better references than other coaches who may or may not be in the running for the Rapids. But yeah, I mean, it's you know, you Matt saw what went down with New England this weekend. I mean, they they fired their coach at the beginning last week. Brad Friedel they fired their general manager on Friday. And then we will woke up on Monday. We were like, oh good. Cincinnati the Rapids and New England are all looking for a coach we can watch them do it out for the next month. Nope. They went and hired Bruce Arena today for both positions, which is pretty wild. So, you know, it's it's entirely possible that a. A club can just willy nilly wake up one morning and clear house and just acts their general manager. I think Smith thinks he's in it for the rest of the season. I think for it gets the pick a new manager. And I think the the crunchies for enterprise people will will let him do it. And I think that he's he's got I think he's got a little bit more time. You know, I think I think everybody knows that they're punting on the season. But you know, reset the clock on pork Smith. I think he gets one more year. I think he's got a he's got bring in something really impressive in the summer or the winter transfer window at designated player. And if he doesn't do that, then it's his. Wreck Aram aromas as I know that hashtag clear kids movement is out there. But when you're when you're young back skit isolated attacked in burn so much. Vine Sebastian Seva, I'm assuming referring to Sebastian Anderson Endel Sern up doesn't it mean? We should look for a real leftback. Maybe move win back to that spot question. Mark. I think this speaks to one of the philosophies that I've discovered recently Mark regarding soccer is the game theory approach to soccer that it is either finite that you're trying to do something in the season or Bill towards a goal or an infinite infinite perspective Monnet in that there's gonna be no season where Manchester City does something. And then the FA comes out and says, okay, guys, no more primarily man city is the greatest club of all time like end of story and everything like they didn't do that. When the invincibles happened at arsenal. And they're not. To do that anytime soon, you know, it's not like that somebody's gonna win World Cup. And then we're going to back up shop and say Kay. That's that's the final story of soccer. So in that you have clubs that are approaching two very different things, you know, the New York's in the L as in the land of the world are in win now mode constantly in any burning down or buying out of contracts or fire coach in bringing another big name. They will do necessary in order to try and win something now at the expense of money end of the long-term, then there's the more of the in fine at approach of we want to Bill, you know, it's a better example in Europe where say you have clubs that try to be say one of those yoyo clubs that builds up to being a really good team in second division yoyos between the first and second division promotion relegation promotion relegation, and then builds up steadily the point where the next time. They get promoted then they're stable club in there for an extended period of time think Burnley in English primarily as oppose. What Fulham did this year where they spent one hundred million pounds in the transfer window and finished second worse than the table. We'll take our nineteen points trophy though. And so an MLS equivalent I would say for that would have been the New York red bulls with Jesse Mars certainly would have see Dallas is doing formally under Oskar brea now under Jesse fear and Ellie question, Mark. Maybe I can't remember his name. And I think I think we would have a very different view of this rapid season. And of the defense right now if every single game, it was fashion Anderson Sam vines, don't Cerna let's throw Sam rabbit in there. And maybe one other centreback, you know, if it was all four homegrown and the oldest one was a twenty five year old Dylan Cerna and there were a couple of other teenagers starting in there. I think we would have a different approach. I think romo's at this point that the Rapids at this point are putting on the season. And at some point Conor Casey's job is going to be set themselves up for whenever the next head coach comes in. That's is in a better position. And I am okay. And I. Stand where other people have a very different view of this. If the team is going to go out and consistently get burned. I would rather have the players taking those lumps be a Sebastian Anderson and a vines rather than a Declan win. And he Rosen Barry on sorting all the guys who are in their mid to late twenties isn't really productive for them. I think that head coach the new head coach is gonna come in. And they're going to have be involved in -sition of whether or not to pick up the contract option for Tommy Smith at the end of the season. I think they're going to be in discussions about the future that Danny Wilson has with this club. I think we could certainly throw Kofi apar-, and I have some reservations about whether or not this was Hudson ruining in, but certainly actual Shubert. And I think those players playing and not getting any better right now is in his Beneficial's putting those young guys position to where they may be can then be that. Next productive player. I understand. We're fans want the club to bring in leftback because that has been a distinct weakest for the club. But I mean, you know, put at your ST on this team Mark and they're still comfortably out of the playoffs. And there's a really good possibility that they're still last in the Western Conference, maybe at your castio hits a law. So in one of these games of the Rapids end up getting their first win of the season. But I think putting the best left back in MLS on this team doesn't solve all their problems. And the same way that lawless Abu Bakar, isn't solving all their problems. So if you're not gonna do something right now and the season's already lost in a finite sense. I would very least like to prepare for the future or the near in finite situation in hashtag playing the kids. Let's move onto our last gauge DHL of the week market. I will vote you this one comes from Austin Munoz and Austin Munoz asks in a season of crap and a rapid s- fan and as a rapid s- fan. We basically have to accept crap to be saying who is your favorite crap Rapids player, Mark. I'm gonna ask you. We'll both ask answer this question. "Like without missing a beat. This was told to me as it was happening, or like, you know, half an hour twenty minutes after it happened security staff without missing a beat walked the guys that you're gone goodbye in just a scored into the door and pushed him out on that was that like, so I mean, you know, anecdotes, but Mike experiences always been that a rapid game is a good place to be for these kinds of things that like being a jerk in a jackass, Anna racists is not gonna fly there. But you know, there are other examples where the team hasn't really stepped in. When things haven't been folks have been not necessarily agreeing with the best possible behavior being exhibited by fans. So you know, I mean, it's it's a work in process each and every week. It's interesting that honestly, you this was a much bigger story in the Denver. Posts based on page views than the game itself. And that's what happens when your team is fairly relevant at the bottom of Malang losing every week that like, you know, other stories become more interesting more important. The next time CVA comes up, Mark. I look forward to seeing the league Commissioner, Don Garber and all the clubs get together and having more unified and more open policy on this. They can be enforced league-wide across all stadiums. Regardless of whether it's home supporters or away supporters, and it's in a way that promotes peace safety at the games. And then just the general being in a manner that is open. I think reflective of the values that MLS America and all of its clubs aspire to be we we have to talk about the fact that we have one one more. I don't know if it's banter item where this is just a shameless plug slash advertisement for our own wears. But. We have a pathway on account for this podcast, not because that night think we're gonna get rich or anything far from it. We do podcasts because we like hanging out and drinking a beer and talking about football each week. And it happened in a Rocky Mountain Cup clash they lost three you to the arch rivals from the slightly north and very west real Salt Lake Albert Rusnak. It's scoring open in the twenty fifth minute after a VR review of potential PK. That was ultimately called on Sebastian Anderson who is starting at left back as opposed to his usual, right back physician. He fouled Sebastian south Saito in the box Corey bear. Absolutely burns Anderson in the twenty seven th minute with a Dink over the top and then chips, Tim Howard county. Kosta gets the pids on the board in the third minute of first-half stoppage-time after some great combination play. That had had Lewis making his Rapids debut along with all its Abubaka who were both acquired at the trade deadline last week on setting up with a run induce Nicholson who also starred in this game, and kellyn Acosta has a thumping rebound shots, you go past Putina the goalkeeper for our as Nick Ramona was injured in this game. So to one to the bad guys at halftime, Danny Wilson cleans up a play off of a redirect off of a corner. Two minutes after the first half at the second half started. And then Sam Johnson with wide open opportunity goes up or ninety in the fifty third minute to make it three to lots of chances for the patients in the final. Couple of minutes. You had lawless Boubacar potentially getting on the board, but he was called off sides. And then just a couple minutes before that you had a his I'm sure we'll talk about more a very controversial VAR call in which it was off of a corner and Shinya Sheikhi kind of gets off balance in the ball appears to go off in ourselves. Fenders arm and then off he can Rosen various arm, and then Rosen berries, shoots at least from my vantage point, Mark on the west side of the stands at look at the angle. Like it went into the net. It turns out it was just wide of the net. A very very long review by the officiating crew in alternate. We know handball no Cole. No PK or anything and the Rapids have now tied the two thousand seven or a cell record for the longest start to a season without a win. And then if you actually look at point per game going into eleven games through the season. This is the worst start in Emily's history, regardless of era era, Mark any works air works just as Well, Matt. Okay. So it's kinda hard for us to have you follow our usual structure with the way the form has been going for the pids. And then also in the context of this game. So I guess simply Mark where do you wanna start where he learnt start digital good things? So we've got a throw good thing out. Any Wilson wasn't total garbage. Danny Wilson, wasn't total garbage. I mean, all I got. That is all got why thank you started in a good place with mentioning Sebastian Anderson committing foul in the box. But also he got burned a couple times N he started as the left back and after about twenty minutes. Apparently, he got swapped a flop to the other side of the field because he was doing that poorly. Which is not a great doesn't
