"That said, I think the idea could be tweaked to make it work by addressing one of the biggest weaknesses in the NBA. The lack of team rivalries. With so much expansion, it's less common for the same teams to meet deep in the playoffs multiple years in a row. And we're left pretending that hawks nix is a rivalry because Trey young took a bow at midcourt. It's not the same. Don't tell me. Here's my idea. Expand in two more cities. Let's say Seattle and Las Vegas so that NBA has an even 32 teams, then divide them up by geography into four 8 team divisions. Next, structure the playoffs so that if my reborn Seattle SuperSonics want to win a title, there's only one path when the western division to reach the final four. Every year we have to face Golden State Phoenix, the Lakers and the rest, year after year, high stakes, games featuring the same teams. Now, Steve then explains a tournament that is very complicated, but essentially. I read this on a Sunday and I was like, nope. Closing my laptop. Going for a walk. Shout out to Steve. I mean, I'm just not going to read it because it is pretty granular, but essentially it adapts a point system that's similar to how the NHL functions..

"You can add one or two. You move someplace fine. But when you can that that's gotta be the team You love for life, and so for me was Seattle SuperSonics and that was Before the sea Oxford around that there was a major league baseball not like the Mariners have done a whole lot of here anyway, but That that reality was the Sonics and and that team that we put together. Building at the 79 out of 50% of your listeners are going 79. I was being alive, buddy. But you know, there was Jack Sigma and the whole the starting backcourt. Gus Williams and Dennis trumps and DJ We lost the championship. In that 78 79 Washington Bulls came back the next year and 79 we win it. And we have a parade in Seattle. Now, this is where the story gets good, My mom. Has not let anybody skip school in the Calero household for 20 years. You know, here I am the eighth child of 16. Everybody goes to school every day. Nobody gets sick and bad tells you you're not sick. Go to school. No, we just keep on going to school. Sonics win the championship. My mom says, Do you want to go to the parade? And there I am now, uh, in 79, a sophomore in high school, and she takes my youngest brother out with who was just like, you know, he's by the time I'm 16. He's probably only you know, 88 years old. And she gets two of us throws us in the back The van we drive down Seattle and I'm sitting there watching Stanek parade with my little brother on my shoulders and skip school and that that was about his biggest Catholics in there was on the planet Earth, and I gotta do that. And I tell him I think my mom is a go. That was the greatest thing you ever did in my life. It dad that memory and watch that watch that team go by in the cars and the head coach. Was Lenny Wilkens. Then I got to go to basketball camp later on something that that's it. It's um I mean, I was locked in from that point on, you know, it's hard for me to play other sports was a basketball fanatic. From that point on, I played fresh and football and ransom cross country and, you know, I dabbled around two things in junior high, but it was basketball and then ultimately, when I was a high school coach, I couldn't take it anymore. I had to be around basketball people all the time, so I got into college game. Yes, because I want to coach basketball 365 days a year just known that that I heard once that a farmer is a farmer every day because the crops need attention, and the cows the milking. Isaac, You know, it's a vassal coach kind of this your your coach every day. You think about the came every day about the players every day, Five of that, And now that I'm a happily retired guy, and there's a There's a few other things I missed out on the last 50 years, So I'm enjoying some of those things now. And and and and love in that part of life as well. There you go. Great stuff. Joe Clara joining us here, Coach show Clear. Always wants the coach. Always the coaches. You said, Yeah. You're you're thinking about it, even retirement. You were going to get another, You know, early retirement, come down to Vegas and see the other side. And I've been part of that other side for a long time. I mean, me and my buddies back in Jersey. We're betting on games and were in elementary school for the love of God and picking games and that, of course, high school got a little more serious, but, you know, made it out to the West Coast. And so many great people I've met along the way. And David Janine is actually introduced me to a bunch, Dave, Of course, hey, always talked about, you know his days account, Polly slow how we barely made it grade wise, so that he was eligible to play. And, of course, his big claim to fame is that he hit the first three pointer and Cal Poly slo history against Boston College. And then he, of course tells me they went on a 23 to 2 run right after he hit that three. But nonetheless, how did you get to know David they need and by the way, coach because you and I talked earlier, and I got on him a little bit. I said, you know, do you mean it's just like, you know, you shoot and and Brad Restituto and I, You know Brad was a regular on the show, and we were there at this 24 hour fitness off Tropicana and watched Indian hit 43 of 44 threes from wing to wing. And just unbelievable. The guy could miss it is this is like it's seven in the morning for the love of God, like who's ready to shoot at that time, But he's got his little Woody Harrelson stretching drills and all this crap and it's unbelievable. So you know there. I'm talking to you. And you're like, Well, yeah, well, we had this. You know, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. You know, alumni thing, get together and and didn't need any. And he was just you know, he wasn't hitting. Well, he came back. And you told me you tell Coach Joe that I took second in that three point shooting contest. Okay? They don't get trophies for second place. Huh? I love maybe they did up in the bay area where he was from now, Maybe everybody gets a trophy. No, actually do need was not like that. He wouldn't take a trophy unless he won. And I told you that he did beat Eddie O'Bannon in the Buffalo wild wings shoot out and was like, really windy, like when it was windy day, But he was the most technologically sound guy as far as you know, fundamentally sound and the bank shot here in the bag and you had to call bank if you didn't call bank..

"Nothing like unveiling a brand new ballpark and No fans, no fans to be there to watch it. It's gonna happen the same way with the Ah, with the Rams charges on the Raiders in NFL as well, Yeah. And we didn't talk much about it yesterday. But how about Seattle? Getting a brand new sake? Team hockey team that they are the crack in? I like it, actually. Do you like it? Well, you know, the crack in is a Seattle deserve to have all four. Yes, I think so. I mean, look, it wasn't like Seattle didn't draw when they had the SuperSonics right? They they still drew fans. They just couldn't work out. The club could not work out a deal. Stadium deal with the city of Seattle to get a facility that they felt was going to be more up to par. So they They Actually played a game of chicken. And guess what? They didn't flinch. They said. We're really gonna We're really going to leave. And they did right. Kevin Durant. I do believe play one year in Seattle. I think he played one year in Seattle before they moved to Oklahoma City. They move the Oklahoma City. Yeah. And if if you remember where did the didn't a Sonics play? Did they play somewhere else? Before they went to Oklahoma City. No No, I think they went see Seattle, Oklahoma City. Yeah, I think you're right. But, yeah, I do think that they're due to get another n ba team. I, you know, Look, the Seattle SuperSonics were man. They had some ball in. Ball in teams back in the day when you look at Shawn Camp and Jack Sikma, and I mean, they had some guys that Or absolutely fantastic. But, yeah, I mean, I think Look, it's it's Ah, It's a giant metropolitan area that I think can support all four sports and they've been supporting minor league hockey for A really long time and they did something very similar. To what the city.

"Was with the S. P. N. dot com Chicago the last dance it was just taken America in the world by storm everybody in the shelter in place for the most part or the log down whatever you wanna call it he was the right time to deliver the last dance and Michael Jordan be as open as he's ever been in school joins us from the windy city where he's been there all of his life started working for slam magazine right towards the end of MJ's career which school they say life is all about timing yeah no doubt about it yes I did we're always going to stay in the inspectors a cargo so I was kinda here covering on it even even you know before we even started plan magazine you know just being paid you know stating that you know these are my preferred game being at eighty eight also I mean honest to me you know we started around ninety four when did Michael mania really started in Chicago well there's a difference of opinion on that matter and I think there's a a I'm more Randwick and that is that came around it only gives about a week to he came around gave three and they highlighted that gained in the last day and but not the people on the ground the fans you know you know the people that usually get overlooked by media when telling the story he came up big in the first quarter of game one would definitely game one accurately report second quarter but four days we knew we could play he he did he plays he plays on the basketball you get people to forget about but he played a program for this small little Baldy I believe my complaint with the police Monday it will be in the family prior to even save you money for comedy the Olympics so he kind of you know the starfish which was happening but to answer your question the lightning bolt hit during game one first regular season game against Washington where he basically tried to end their you know vehicle one Jeffrey Willis which is something unheard of at the time because they were destroyed and before the T. twenty cricket and they would listen to members in a day and if U. case at all you know he's not even trying to do anything he just came into a cult of the late you will be put on your Sunday in never before anybody the body like really challenging but like a tractor out of the dump on the ball on a baseline and I'll never forget that because you know the games on local TV altogether and it seems like that moment right there with the top of the conversation around illegal people in the city people and we were like basketball the fact that we've never seen that before we see doctor gave you something and I couldn't think that calling in you know kind of how can we never seen a guy live album nervous you would have the nerve to challenge my voice a little ages literally went baseline and like I've got nothing in my mind you know you could be but the fact that he did it that was his that was the moment for us like they do for you definitely not like we got I think we do see is to be in there you know the nerve to do that it was kind of like if you talk to real true Colby saying like really really dark will retain they'll tell you that he is likely moment that moment his coming out party with a new litigated issues all we missiles within three to four airball we got a playoff game that evening to just the fact that he had the nerve in that moment to do that that's automatically they wanted to do this we rate it resonated and a lot of the people they would Indiana you know we took ownership doesn't email code we will not stop we are playing he was at home when you tell what is it okay to do the best because he had the nerve to do that thank you Michael game one Washington bullets traveling don't come more age actually that was the moment for us any talk about more in a and a big focal point of the last day and so has been that changing of the guard from the bad boys and the Detroit Pistons to Michael a these rockstar bowls and you go back to morning and you mentioned him with Washington how much did then Detroit team Isay in lamb beer in my horn and Rodman the Detroit version before robin ended up helping on the bulls win but how much did that changing of the guard and having to get through Detroit pave the way for Michael to take his game and the team to the next level pay your way because it made everything else easy to find in this product everybody talks about her lan to go do this and yet I did look at it from an end to end this I respect all and I think that's true but I do think that that was not just a hurdle that was the most difficult obstacles both physically and mentally they had to go through everything at after that was easy for them and you know you see we had a conversation before about you know played when he reached a peak how the game flows out because you stayed in when he when when they when they did it I think Detroit not only signals that Blake one thing got past them in the way they got past them I really do believe in all honesty everything after that was easy I'm here to take your mind throughout the whole entire championship run the only played two games at you know and I'm with the resort but that was still the heart of competition that was the winning and care for them and when they had to work to get you and if you look at all the other teams I mean this is not respecting the other teams play in the airforce and we gave them an hour in the end it was a real threat to them and I think that the within the last name but they wanted to economical early Christians were either next they want early printed in like this is going to matter he's a winner there was no other team with the real and effective you can find you know it wasn't about me they want to like a lot but the Seattle SuperSonics Utah jazz's place twice Portland you know it's not too early Lakers you know or the currently barking and blame on him again they would never really a threat to the rules the way to work and to me I can look at what those pieces of the bullet through Hey look at what they had to say after that I think they made it easy for them I really do I really really do believe it is only took so much out of them but build them up at the top in the the a little bit they handed it to them you know I you know what I mean I don't think it would be easy and also another thing that means keeping the water we have a lot is it weird that that he's came through company I think in their minds that once they got to the choice in the way they got to the and I think that's important I think it's important to understand that if that came with a seven game series you know the final time it the companies might not have been but once they were able to squeeze him in gifts to them the way that he is they're like nothing there's nothing we can't do it targeted universal company it's almost you know and entered a lot of research professors was needed extraction level but please go ahead at the moment once again gave him the confidence they made everything after that he decided you know school dinners at home and I don't care if it's a high school team one college team or pro team no matter what the sport there is that team there is that a home there is a mental block they have to get over in there is always something that takes a team high third town well it takes him to the next level and what I've heard from Michael okay from the man's mouth then his his disdain for the pistons still lingers inside his soul inside his head and may be privately he knows Hey these guys push me to get stronger to get better I'm gonna show them because you know school be in there in Chicago then the number one thing everybody who has wrote a book we'll talk about your new book later but everybody's wrote a book who's done a interview with him Michael had to find something to drive him not that he was lazy or that or that he would lose focus but you know he would he would get into these mini mental battles with Steve Kerr in a practice just a goal have the best practice he could he he thrived he thrived on having an enemy he did and you know feel we put in with the second squad you know if he would you know he makes them better we needed some extra incentive and it wasn't because of laziness it would be taken to a you know a good idea for exactly he shot his own waiting outside sources to find internal chat and it is basically a represent nothing given that they follow you know they got I think is always polite always talk about greatness at this level there's always something that we've got a great internet individual or company whatever whatever little grace was talking about somebody has to bring that out okay actually the last person and I think that if you look at the tax free status that's what they eat they brought out the best AT four PM to be greater then probably he would have had they not been at present no Sir I'll be afraid his father Christmas yeah we thought about leaving the greatest you know not only fire probably great at all times you know you think I'm officially Jordan the whole thing is based around him where you can always and I know what I mean I can forward the imam Ali would have never gotten estate was one of these operations Hey man hi Greg you pushed him away that forced him to a level of greatness and he needed only and I believe this is a job for his confirmation Hey think about the great ones all get knocked down okay that is just a fact when you when you do not revisionist history when you look at the facts of history in sports the great ones they'll look at the way tiger came back and won the masters when everybody wrote him off you know what he did and thirteen months ago less than thirty minutes ago and you know Michael tiger from the same ilk if I can use that word on just being driven to be the best in you know Michael Jordan after he got through the pistons and like you said van it wasn't as hard because of the confidence I wonder after the pistons school and by the way Scott Jackson ESPN dot com Chicago one of the best NBA insiders in the business joining us here on the huge across Michigan talking about M. "Was the coach of the ninety six Seattle SuperSonics who played the ball to the NBA finals Michael told the story in the last dance on Sunday night we're George Karl did not say hello to where I'm at a steak house before the finals and at that point in time Michael decided I will destroy that man to destroy that teeth quite a bit the turning point of that NBA finals it was a good sonics team maybe not a great sonics team but at that point in time Michael declared war on George Karl we'll talk to George Karl about the slight miscalculation not saying hello to Michael and steak house before the NBA finals in nineteen ninety six coming up an hour from now as always our phone number eight five five two one two four two two seven eight five five two one two for CBS the Kentucky Derby should've been held a couple weekends ago unfortunately we did not have it but we will get the derby later on in the fall fingers crossed as you know my wife is a Kentucky graduate to U. K. and I have visited there many times at Rupp arena for Wildcats games in in fact I just went for a wedding couple months ago and I love it and one of the things that I love to do with this drink Bourbon when I'm down there to go to the distilleries along the Bourbon trail of Lexington and all across Kentucky such a cool thing because if you're like me you know there's nothing better than sitting back on a cold night or maybe a warm summer night glasses good Bourbon maybe just one one piece ice in there maybe just need and just enjoying your sip and it's just such a it's delicious it's delicious especially with the Kentucky Derby that's supposed to be in the air right now it's like boy what we do without that well we know that a bunch of you guys are big Bourbon fans there's been a Bourbon Bulma here in the states of the last couple of years for joining us here on the show this is very cool we'll talk to master distiller Chris Morris at Woodford reserve and I love Woodford stuffy joins us here on the show this morning to lend some intellect a little ingenuity a little little information to our Bourbon tasting and Bourbon enjoyment Chris good morning how you doing today thank you for having us on my pleasure I appreciate you jumping on it it's a little weird obviously I'm sure in your neck of the woods without the Kentucky Derby this time of year how bizarre is it not to have that huge party that huge race that everything kind of revolves around this month it was very strange when you think of the Kentucky Derby festival the two are now three weeks of other use that nonstop events and parties and galas and which is quiet this year absolutely quiet even the marathons and other races didn't go off the steamboats didn't roll along the Ohio River it was weird really is weird especially for horse racing fans just ports France general because it's such a mile marker of the calendar spring summer it cetera you know it's interesting because I think that a lot of people drink Bourbon but don't really know the history behind the Bourbon what separates Bourbon from and from a normal whiskey barrel well that's a great question whiskey is a whiskey whether it's made in Scotland Ireland Tennessee Kentucky or elsewhere it's a grain based spirit that has to be aged in oak and some other technical rules to it but I'm a whiskies whisky that's like saying a horse is a horse and we know Kentucky thoroughbred is just not a typical horse right and that's the way we feel about Bourbon Bourbon skews me as the most exacting rules governance production of all the whiskies we alone have to use a brand new oak barrel every time but of course and hope it all has to be charged on the inside we've got each wonderful four seasons that no one else in the world has allows our Bourbon to mature and a different style than you would find elsewhere we've got this wonderful limestone water that's one of the reasons we have the thoroughbred horse breeding industry in the heart of Kentucky right around that would preserve distillery that limestone water makes strong bones and horses and makes great whiskey and we got no house we've been making whiskey in Kentucky since the seventeen seventy I think we figured it out by now so when you see Bourbon that is made across seas Japanese Bourbon or other places in the country here in the US what do you think about ego ask you not to knock off well they can't call it Bourbon that's uniquely United States but there are people trying to make whiskies like us as you said Bourbon is hot Bourbon is booming and I hope would never have dreamt when I started in the industry DA that the term Bourbon would be eight case descriptor in with around the world nope the hips of Bourbon notes of Bourbon like notes when they used to look down their nose at it now they're trying to associate with us which is great yes so true master distiller at Woodford reserve Chris Morris joins us here on the show that's important that's important factoid you can not be called Bourbon unless it is made in the U. S. is that correct that is correct but it does that's been made in Kentucky just could be anywhere in the US could be called Bourbon yes Bourbon is the distinctive spirit of America and of course it was born and bred raced and perfected in Kentucky but we share with the rest of the country which is just which is great and in nineteen sixty four an act of Congress made it the distinctive spirit of America and many of us get tacky think that's probably the only thing Congress has ever done right before so what do you think there's been such a booming Bourbon because you're right I mean if you went back twenty years it's not viewed the same way as it is now there's all these craft Bourbons there's all these distilleries open to the public and people really are just they're they're drawn to the taste and now they're sold there's there's thousands of different you know skews up it what what do you think that's born out of the last couple of years well I'm going to be quite honest with you if it would reserve the launch of what reserve in nineteen ninety six we made a determined effort to change the industry and it came in two forms we we developed our now classic iconic slash eight model that just changed the the the the visual presentation of Bourbon before that everybody was in square bottles in black and white labels and we became a Mormon elegant stylish approach to Bourbon and people started thinking on is that a cognac is Adam all whiskey what is that it's it's so handsome no it's Bourbon they couldn't believe it but the key thing is the model we'll sell you want it's in the model that sells you over and over again and we put together a philosophy of flavor formation that was quite unique and that is to make a complex yet balanced Bourbon that everybody can enjoy and we did some very interesting things that you know Bourbon was on the decline famous distilleries were closing in and we purchased a long abandoned called silent distilleries had not made a drop whiskey since nineteen fifty nine we restored this historic distillery in Woodford county and put in old fashion process copper pot stills cypress wooden fermenters we turn the clock back to make a modern Bourbon we went back in time in that G. S. energize the industry like if you guys can do it we can do it and that really helps spur on this craft the the story moves would preserve real changing point in the history of our industry is it amazing now how valuable some Bourbons are I mean you know having a wife that went to Kentucky and now friends all across the state I now see the yeah this kind of industry ecosystem around Bourbon and you know they're talking about bottles for two hundred dollars three hundred dollars thousand dollars because it's a certain specification and it's just amazing to me that there's this kind of underground coal could you get that you got to get to this distillery early gonna get to this place really early that this is going to sell out you get to know somebody on the inside is it amazing to you to see how how valuable the most valuable Bourbons have become over the last couple of years it really has D. A. I. R. D. N. I still I'm still sort of live in the past where we gotta earn our way we got to keep working hard and it's hard to believe that people are waiting in line overnight outside a package stores get which is which is just tremendous and another big turning point for us and for the industry which is going back to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky derby on the derby didn't run eighteen seventy five in Kentucky in the derby had never endorse a single government in its history in in nineteen ninety nine when we've been on the market for a mere three years Churchill Downs asked us to be the official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby of course we are so honored started our tradition making Derby commemorative models and then of course three years ago we became the presenting sponsor of the Kentucky Derby and I'll never forget the late John Ashton Chris hook and we're now would preserve will be connected to the Kentucky Derby there will always be the Kentucky Derby you name the number prison about workers are employed it just chills up and down my spine impartially he passed away just a couple months after he told me that it was just amazing so having with reserve on the national stage having that the derby affiliated with something cool and hot again you know Bourbon I think will help both of us Chris Morris is the master distiller at Woodford reserve he joins us this morning here on the show give us a good tip how do you make the perfect mint julep what's the key to a great mint julep Peter great mint julep besides the Bourbon is make it crash make it one of the time make it to your specifications some people Bob heard I've been making the job site I figured out I mean the first night joke forty five years ago and over all these years I hear I don't like mint juleps are too sweet well don't put as much sugar I don't like it delivers to many don't put as much maintenance I don't like my job I can't taste the Bourbon what but lots of would preserve and make it look the way you want it to tech it's not rocket science make it the way you want to be and you have a great house before I let you go there are now so many as we said really valuable bottles of Bourbon so people are collecting bottles of Bourbon to try to find the best quality Burbage ones that they really really love I just had a friend of mine gave me something from Kentucky that he only gets every so often so I'm so excited to try it and I want to know what is the most pure away to have a great Bourbon is it me which is just room temperature no Weiss is it one cube of ice in the middle what do you think is the best way to get the best flavor out of the great Bourbon my weight is one Ice Cube and again you might prefer neat splash water but I think an ice cube which helps open up the aroma dilutes the whiskey a little bit just that Matt clinking sound in the glass it all comes together so little with reserve and Ice Cube in your set what I also love that I learned at a tasting at a Kentucky wedding that I was at a horse farm was actually you have to have one sip of Bourbon to get to the second super you actually taste the flavor the first one opens up all these olfactory senses in your in your nose in your taste budget set or you can't really takes over for the first time you've got to separate the second time just to finally get that that realty for the third time you get even more out of it it's pretty amazing it really is and that's just that's just good of course and science you know you as you put anything in the mail specially something like a great Bourbon your your brain your palate it's like what's going on here I'm trying to figure this out and now you've got everything you just said working and that next step now to bring the moon this is urban this is a bit can defy you can identify the brand I there's a caramel and hints of an hour so again it is it's it's a process so in one step it's not enough that's right the Kentucky Derby will be back with us this fall so we're looking forward to that we look forward to seeing the horse racing back on the schedule and an American classic like the derby.

"Player and very like we had out here in Vegas gained all of the players on that team Blake Griffin. All of the young guys coming up and giving me hugs and kisses. And thank you me because you know in that situation just in terms of dollars from Lebron James. He's got an extra one hundred million dollars. Toby gotta one extra one hundred million dollars Lake Griffin got an extra fifty million dollars Kevin Durant who give me a big hug and kiss each got seventy five million dollars extra so the number one dollars and sense that give you an example of what it is because with with four years have yet to wait four years after your high school graduate. You wouldn't lose that kind of capital and you lose that plant on you will lose four entitled number. That will help them get into the hall. Laid on those numbers would be race. And you don't know what happened four years then in College Spencer Haywood Aba Nba Legend and hall of Famer. Hey will always be remembered that the person opened the door for underclassmen college basketball players to leave college early to enter the NBA thereby creating the Spencer Haywood Rule Haywood attended the University of Detroit and help the US Olympic team to a gold medal at the nineteen sixty eight summer games in Mexico City. Nineteen sixty eight. After two years in college he decided to enter the NBA draft citing family financial hardship the NBA however at the time for players entering the draft until four years. After the high school graduation. Hey would then sign with the ABA. Denver rockets play one season leading the league in scoring and rebounding as a rookie since he now had a professional season under his belt he decided to challenge the NBA rule. Once again and signed with the Seattle Supersonics in one thousand nine hundred sixty nine the NBA wasn't having it. Hey will the league all the way to the US or frame court and one on September eleven? Two Thousand Fifteen. He wasn't Tryin Naismith Basketball Hall of fame. I'm John Johansen Junior and welcome to another edition of and Black America on this week's program. Aba An NBA Legend and hall of Famer Semester. Haywood in Black America. Charles Barkley went out on a limb when this stuff was acting when they were acting crazy. And I'm they missed me like the last time of going into the hall of fame and I was like put on the backburner right house. Barclay stepped up and said on. Nuff is enough and did it publicly. He did it every way you said enough is enough now. This is not right and he stood up as a player and he started educating young players. Like do y'all know who is in our presence with Spencer Haywood Blah Blah. And he started talking about. You know there's like three cases that changed the face of force in one dispenser Haywood Heywood versus the NBA. I went to the Supreme Court and then play a young player. Started like Whoa wait a minute. I know him I see him but I never knew that until Charles was the one that should should should be there. And he's my what you call. My advocate advocate is Just to a good person. Just a wonderful person. Spencer Haywood won Olympic gold medal in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight at age nineteen and signed with the Seattle Supersonics two years later after dominating the ABA and a case that went to the US Supreme Court he sued the NBA or rule that prohibited players being draft until the league until they waited for years after graduating from high school. He won that case and nineteen eighty. He won a world championship with the Los Angeles Lakers as a twenty rookie in nineteen sixty nine. Seventy season he led the American Basketball Association both scoring and rebounding and was named the League's Most Valuable Player and rookie of the year. One on April twenty seven nineteen forty nine and silver city Mississippi into a family of Chen Children Hayward grew up in a dying era of American history. His mother picked cotton for two dollars a day and Heywood joined her in the field at the age of five hundred sixty four he moved to Chicago then to Detroit in the motor city. He leads pershing high school to the one thousand nine hundred sixty seven Michigan class. A State Basketball Championship. He went on to a stellar careers at Trinidad State Junior College and the University of Detroit in the summer of nineteen nine hundred sixty eight. He helped the United States to a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City on September. The eleventh. Two Thousand Fifteen. Hey what was inducted into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of fame? My first reaction was You know is this fact in. Is this true because I had had Three falls a long before that because most reporters and most people who look at numbers and they at by numbers as a player and that this guy was. Mvp of the ABA averaging thirty and twenty five years with the Seattle Supersonics average in twenty six and thirteen and Olympic record holder and all of these different categories and as still as leading score and also was the outstanding college player of the year. So they look at all these things and they just assume that everybody thought again. Then you know also I went to the Supreme Court to fight he would versus the NBA to pave the way for Lebron's Michael Jordan magic. All of them they come through what is called. I the NBA. They call it early entry and now. I think it should be called what it is to Spencer. Haywood because they have the Larry Bird rule and they have Oscar Robertson. Rule regrettably Oscar but I know they promote birds and Larry Bird's modified version of my role. Larry Bird came in on a dispenser. It will but anyway so for years we thought this would happen and then there was a couple of false alarms that it did happen. So I was kidding around with John Deliver with the The Chairman and CEO. The hall and he was mentioning. You know. Well I probably spend Kareem. Rise is always the top. Yeah I said well. What does that got to do with with Kareem abdul-jabbar? My my blonde jokes Right so so Yeah it was. It was delighted. Mandic to get the call and to finally get to call it. Finally get it in but you know my mother used to sing this whole Psalm Lord and may not come when you want and buddies right on time. And that's my Jackson right so you know if it had to happen any other time. I think it would have been not as powerful as it is today and It was right on time. And it's on God's time so I'm very grateful and very humble Vita journey understand so once. You heard that you were going to be inducted. Walk us through that period from the time that you got to call to the induction ceremony that took place last Friday. September the eleventh. What all the activities have you been involved with. Well I've been all over the country Speaking and people wanting to know this story because it's a unique story and it is basketball history but yeah you know it hasn't been told so It's a new newfound appreciation for Spencer. Haywood so players have been embracing me like only at USA basketball here. In Las Vegas Games all the players on that team Blake Griffin. All of the young guys coming up and giving me hugs and kisses and thanking me. Because you know that situation just in terms of dollars and cents per Lebron James. He's got an extra one hundred million dollars. Coby got a one extra one hundred million dollars but griffin got extra fifty million dollars Kevin Durant who give me a big hug. 'cause he's got seventy five million dollars extra so that's the numbers in dollars and sense that. I give you an example of what it is because with with four years. If you have to wait for years after your high school classic graduate you would lose that kind of capital and you'll lose that plan time loser scoring titles you'll lose numbers that will help them get into the hall. Later on those numbers would be raced. And you don't know what's going to happen in four years in college. You could get hurt. A lot of things could happen so they fully appreciating news. So it's a good feeling because of forty four years more to this to happen so it is It is right on time on God. Signed so and then I went to I've been doing a lot of golf. Tournaments or charitable events and also just playing a lot and I spend a Lotta time with my family. My daughters and in fact I gotTA leave Again next week my next two oldest daughters having our first grand and So I gotta go in go through the process with her and It is it is a spectacular time and I also sit back John and and think about the times we were sitting in your dad's barber shop. They all sunset and this and just Nevada in Detroit for people who don't know right in Detroit Michigan and John Fathers where we congregate And and and and do our conversation and get a nice. Yeah because he didn't allow us to walk around. I hair off falling away years and stuff. So that's right. Yeah you know that's right So we would sit there and listen and talk and just pass the ball sports but all so I've been reflecting on Detroit. I went over to my neighborhood yesterday. day before yesterday and spent some time over there. Thursday and looking around and just just hearing up. Because done you know the story you know. When I came up from Mississippi I had no place to say I had no family there and James and either bill took in and adopted me along with my coach. Will Robinson and then we had waned diet. Dr Wayne die of your your own zone by Diet. Right Do all of my academics bring me up to snuff there. Oh my God it was just A. It's just a lot of love was having an and I see in Detroit and it's always been that way you know. They've always reached out and help each

"Switching to gyco is a no brainer. Ono is the dust bunnies. Only natural predator on the long dust on his run along. Back. I get up snaking him, but which NBA franchise owns the longest active championship drought, including those that have never won one could be the raptors. Of course, you've never won one. Jalen, who do you think it is, though the complain about super teams always remember fifty percent of the teams in the NBA have never won a chance? Not the answer to the question. The question is the Atlanta Hawks. Seattle supersonics. The actual answer is the the clippers. Oh, who began man. They've played nine seasons without a championship. Now I'm doing this at the top of my head hand. But would they date back to the buffalo Braves? Right. The buffalo Braves moved and became the San Diego clippers, we can bring this to the desk here guys. We they became not that I don't enjoy seeing him, but they were the buffalo Braves. They became the San Diego clippers with Bill Walton, and they moved to Los Angeles. They still never wanna championship but they feel close because they have an owner everybody wants to play for. They have a coach everything to play for. And they might just have this Jalen, the biggest storyline. In the upcoming season is where Katie will land. And while everyone in New York thinks that as a fatal complete that Katy is coming to the Knicks. Another team is emerges distinct possibility. The clippers have to MAC spots available. They have an attractive ownership situation. Why are you looking like that? You don't believe the clippers are going to get superstar players? I don't believe a couple of things one that the clippers will ever be the team in Los Angeles. Okay. There are a lot of people going around here saying that they might be Hawaiian K D. They're not team in Los Angeles for right now. They might they wanna championship. But here's the other. It just fascinating to me. How we keep going from team to team with K D. He plays on the best team in the league. Really? In there. I think he's leaving it baffles you because it's a different day and age with the players K as you understand. And there was a time where you in Indiana you tried to get it done in the end because of the culture there it wasn't about just you and say, hey, I'm leaving because of this you have players today. Now, just like a basketball, they go to Las Vegas with a certain team, but they finish in Vegas with a different team. So it's just something that just continues to happen, not just at the AAU level. But now in the NBA, and I'm gonna I'm gonna sort of spin this to a different place here. But I think this is an interesting point to make you want all these championships on these San Antonio teams that never had this, and people always talk about the ego lists nature. And there is certainly a truth to that. But there's also another piece of this. There was never any question, whose team that was right. It was Tim Duncan's team. And you guys as great as manager nobly was greatest. Tony Parker was, and the other guys you had that was Tim Duncan team and Golden State, they don't have that Kevin Durant joined another person's team. And I think that that dynamic. Continues to hover over it. And that is the reason ultimately think the team is Steph curry scene, even though Kevin Durant came and joined on boy, made him feel welcome. Right. And that's what great players do as far as what Tim Duncan was able to do. He was able to welcome someone. So we know Katie being there. It's a welcome for him to be there. But you think of that explain Jalen, I think that's the point why Katie would leave that. Otherwise, seem so good is that he's the best player on someone else's team. But here's what always is happening in professional sports. A guy like Katie thinks that going to go and stay and winning. The championship is going to solve all of his issues publicly, and then you realize went into championships when the two finals MVP's people are still going to throw shape joining a Golden State Warriors. This is why when you see great players like Kobe Bryant. He wants three championships with shea. He loved the ones that he wanted without him shack..

I mean, it's really serious. So people are already getting paid to work in presidential campaigns for twenty twenty it's starting already, and you know, it comes up pretty quickly. You have the Iowa caucuses in February third in two years. Followed a week later by the New Hampshire. Primary followed a week later by the Nevada caucuses man cares. And then the South Carolina primary, which will be a big one on the twenty ninth. All the candidates seem to be going to South Carolina this next week. In fact, that's going to be the first place that Kamala Harris will make a campaign stop in a couple of days now that she is an official candidate. And I think that's because maybe they're seating New Hampshire to Senator. Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts who is running a she hasn't officially announced it, but she's announced her her exploratory committee, maybe they just figure. Well, she's from Massachusetts. Maybe show win the New Hampshire primary. Let's focus our attention. Elsewhere. And of course, some of them will end up practically living in Iowa for the next two years because of those caucuses, you know, you get that that I out of the gate you get a good showing there. And that might help you in your Hampshire and then moving into South Carolina. I guess I shouldn't have downplayed the Nevada caucuses because that's a that's an evolving state. It's going from red to blue right now still kind of purple, and it's a lot of opportunities there for Democrats, especially with all the the unions in Las Vegas and all that. All right. We are at ten minutes before the hour. Let's talk to the aura in Radford, Pennsylvania. Good morning. You all excited about a presidential campaign already here. Laura. Somebody better than Trump. You have a favorite so far. Or are you still looking to pick one? Take one. Yeah. So what what are you need? Is it more important to be Trump? Or is it more important to get somebody who lines up with your particular set of issues. Got him. Now. Business. Yeah. Oh, you don't want them running their business. Well, what about what about Michael Bloomberg? He's a billionaire, and he he created a business from nothing and made billions of dollars. And also ran the biggest city in the country. What about what about Michael Bloomberg? So would you hold it against him because he's got a business background? Him. To get the ship down. And that's not right. Yeah. S that we need the money. They can't work. I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah. It's a it's a bad situation where we are now a month into the shutdown, and and that's that's energizing a lot of people who might want to run against him. Anyway. Well, you keep you keep your eye on that you call us back, and let us know when you come to a decision on who you're going to vote for thanks for checking in with us. This morning are certainly appreciate it. Let's go up to David up in Vashon island, Washington. Good morning. David. Good morning, Michael. How are you? I'm pretty good. How you doing? That bad. Dad? Here's Seattle's named mister Howard show. Mr. stove us, right Starbucks. Yeah. He is now he seems pretty close to running. Do you think he actually will? Because he said he was gonna run as a third party. Dependent. Anybody that runs? Independence going to get re-elected. Yes. Well, it's the Ralph Nader that's the Ralph Nader affect best the Ralph Nader affection. Yeah. Go ahead continue. I'm sorry. Also said that. The of the Seattle SuperSonics and him and Klay Bannock inspired. And when the deal went through this the Sonics to Oklahoma City. Well. Stay home and makes Martin Joe instead of running president. That's that's good. Yeah. Just keep the coffee, go go. Get us a Cup of coffee and stay away from politics. Yeah. You don't want. If you're a democrat. You do not want that guy spending all that money. Party, buddy. Oh, yeah. We'll get real absolutely. Because we know Trump's people will stay with him. He's got that hard that hard rock hard support from his people. They're not going anywhere. And if you if you split up the democratic vote, you're going to re elect the president. So that's got a scare people in the Democratic Party. Anyway. That's why bloom out of the water today now. Well, at least he's telling you early. So you have a chance to I don't know what you do to dissuade him from running. Stay home. Yeah. All right. Well, I hope he's listening. Anyway, thanks so much for the call certainly appreciate it. I in Charleston good morning as you sit there on the on the coast and your beautiful city. What does it look like from your vantage point fast, two minutes here? Well, first off, I don't believe Trump will be an office once all the information released recordings and the documents of what he's been doing. He's not gonna just quit. He's just not going to quit and as long as his basis with him. They Republicans in the Senate aren't going to vote to impeach no matter what they find. So I. People are going to demand something be done. I'll be that. As it may. I'm not buying into this four year campaign for president. I'm getting sick of this billionaire flood money even all of these political talking heads from all these think tanks making a living off of it. We need to limit these campaigns down to a year at the most this is this is with everything going on. And they wanna talk about twenty twenty. We've got problems here now that we're not dealing with. And this is just a waste of time. Miss this right here is a political circus being put on by billionaires because there's so much money involved in this, and so many people feed me from the trough, particularly the small market route TV stations and radio stations. All these infrastructure. That's being supported by this. Okay. This is ridiculous of day. We need to bring us back to order does your public servants. They need to do their job. And right now, they're not in by the way for the people out there. You get a grip grow a spine. Shut the airports down and show 'em who's boss because they don't give a damn about you. Yeah. Well, that was certainly probably put the the the kind of pressure that would end the government shutdown right away. But that could be dangerous also. And I I think we all feel the way that you do about the campaigns and we'd like to see them shorter. But how do you do that? You can't just tell somebody. You know? I mean, this constitutional issues you just can't tell somebody you can't run for president. Or you can't talk. You can't raise money. I mean, those are all enshrined in the constitution. It's all part of the second amendment amendment. How would we actually change that? So you got about thirty seconds to fix the world here. I ice gone. All right. Okay. All right. Let's should we try to squeeze in one last caller just about out of time. Right. Let's go to Dave and Punta Gorda Florida. We got literally thirty seconds. Dave. Michael. Unbelievably agree with Brie quarters. I. That's.
