"Dollar business. Barbie girl in a barbie world steve sparse weekly insider broadcaster. Steve sparked for the astros steve. You don't get brain dancing dancing. Thought do we know who sings this. Steve i don't know who think that this is aqua steve. One of your favorite group. Steve grown up. I know that aqua-. I've heard the i've never heard of the group. Aqua really yeah. Yeah like you have. They're still touring since they've been active since two thousand sixteen back together. It's nice nice guest that work. But if i was your group i got you covered. Brother i gotta lot. Cd's coming your way. well we. We needed some wake up with the bats in it happened. I mean we'll we'll get to sunday's game but that that looked like an astros lineup that other teams don't want to deal with and it was impressive and jumping out early and finishing late taking two of the three much-needed steve even for just not the score been the winds but the mental psych right. You're exactly right. Yeah that that series in kansas city was rough you know to salvage that last game felt like a must for whatever reason but That was definitely one of the low points of the season and it wasn't because kansas city wasn't running out some really high end pitching i mean they. They threw some guys who had mediocre statistics than you. Watch them pitching that game. You're saying yeah. I get i understand. Why why they're not hitting these guys. They were filthy so it's going to be. I think tough you know in this series to kansas city's a bad match up for the astros speed component. And whatever just doesn't feel like a good matchup stephen takeout okay. Aside from the runs they scored. What was your favorite thing about the weekend. The wins in the run. Obviously but you study this deeper because you're watching every single movement reaction. What did you take away from this in a way. He said okay man. That's even better than i thought or even on the other side. I don't like what i saw. You know what i think i like. What i saw was a team with a whole lot. More energy what. They got home in a team that does not hitting the ball well and not scoring very many runs for a week there and they look very lethargic going back gas right now is. Is this the way. It's going to be until september. But they're just gonna fight these dog days and not play with much energy they on flip the switch on friday that you know you got your division Telling in the balance a little bit things are getting a little closer there and then they got some separation to really big time games against seattle to continue. That dominance in the american league. West and steve. I would imagine striking out with bases. Loaded has to be something that was a bothered you because it happened too often right. Yeah that's right It's baseball and the see while guy is is been real. His strikeout rate is fourteen per nine innings so that didn't the top echelon of baseball so what he's been able to do that. Very impressive this year. But yeah you're thinking savant play or and that's all you had to do in the game was over so he did a great job. That's not scott service to a great Move by intitially walking michael brantley and just say all right. This is our only chance to win. We'll take our chances and and it worked so There was a good strategy. I mean that was kind of fun to watch that that play out you know you just just hoping somebody can hit the ball with the infield in just make contact and get it running but it just didn't work out this time steve sparks. Astros broadcaster joins us. He does every monday monday. Here on seven ninety sean south bridge. Show steve if you had to make a decision. Maybe this is unfair. But i'm going to ask anyway and you defer however you want chaz mccormick jake and you had to choose one the rest of the year to start everyday center fielder. I personally think it's okay to play in both. But i'm curious if you had to choose one who would it be down the stretch. I think right now. Jake myers you know I think he's a better centerfielder. I'm not you know in one week. I'm not gonna say he's a better hitter. I think mccormack makes really good at In in it back adjustments at the plate. I'm real i like. Both of them had to play. I've put mccormack. Offensively ahead of myers. Even though mars is had a great eight days nine days whatever it is. But i put mccormack. Has it been offensively and defensively. I got myers a notch ahead of mccormick especially in center field. And if i was gonna start one guy in center field for the rest of the year. And i've got tucker and right and brantley and left in your john. I think i'd probably go myers Just because i think the defense Matters quite a bit In centerfield yeah and you've stressed good defense all year on this show sports. Talk seven. Ninety with steve sparks. I'm from ver- you watch mechanics. Would you see different. Look like pitch pretty good. Stay away from that one. Oh my gosh ending. What was different yesterday for him. You know he's got this one little mechanical thing and it's kind of boring but it just a little lean forward at the top of delivery if you if you're straight up at the top of your delivery or leading back a little bit you're gonna fly with that front shoulder a fall off toward the third base side as the left-hander and lose a lot of leverage in direction in all those things so it took him a while i it takes a lot of hitters awhile Every once in a while to to have something creep into a game that you're working on in your side work and hitters. i know last bergman's always told me that the front shoulder flying opens always going to be the biggest problem that a hitter will have and it's always the one that takes the longest to be able to ingrain in your habits where you're not having to think about it during the game and i it's the same for pitching you know it's just because of the speed and adrenaline and Part of the game just makes you wanna do things really quickly. And that's right. Shoulder does some funny thing When you're in fast motion. So i see him kind of calm things down clean for it a little bit and get more directional and not have any hesitation on on his breaking ball and not steer it I think is a very important. I think farmers is is one of the best pitchers in the american league. And he's.

"And you know what what the i think. Just what the reaction in the pacific rim and if he were here doing this in seattle it would it would be so off the charts explosive unbelievably incredible. And i think the fruits and the finances and the money would come flowing in with that would allow for more spin. I have a hard time saying. Yeah in logan gilbert. I think would be here regardless either way. He was there pick based on what they had done the year before. So i know this was the push. And i know it was the impetus to tear the wall down. So i don't want to minimize that Almost by losing him gave you them on that legal pad the okay so right correct also not just those guys at the top of your your systems entire truly invested in the whole thing and i don't know i'm torn i. I like the position. The mariners are in better than the position. The angels are in right. Who do you think is poised to be better over. The course of the next five years i think the mariners do. That's tough angel systems such garbage. They had to fire so keep going back in history. Mariners decided to hire jerry dipoto. Who's the other top candidate for the job illegally up ler billy up ler signs of the angels instead. He's already out of a job because such a lousy job in anaheim. The angels farm system is garbage their roster outside of the two best players in baseball is garbage. Their pitching staff is garbage garbage. They just have to great players and the rest of it is complete and utter trash. Except for fletcher just kills mariners kills the mariners. You'd like eight. Of his twelve home runs in the big leagues of all against the mariners. Sunday like and fletcher's driven in every right or the angel settled down dude just so an individual future over the angels future we know. A single individual cannot elevate in. Lift the tie of dysfunctional organization in baseball like again and football that a single innovative pitcher and a hitter in the best in the league at both yes. We know that can't be done. We watch mike trout. They're right within kathy war over the last decade. That's men it's still think two of the best players in baseball might might at least get you going but give me otani and give me then jerry and scott and there i and their development given any mckay and everything else that were seen. Yeah i think. I'd i'd still. I don't eat the guy like you and how do you do Because ultimately he had a choice to make an ultimately he went with trout and in la and everything else and that market really bad choice but man was. It wasn't a terrible choice. No the face of baseball right now. Yeah yeah you don't think that that could have happened anywhere. I don't think that's an la thing. I i don't think so at all. I think it's a- think he was right connected to mike trout and people already ready to fun. I don't think so at all. I think it's just what he's doing so different unique compared to what everyone else in baseball was doing that that he's he people wanna put ice on it a to say it's a like a a three ring. Circus sounds negative. But i don't mean it that way like there's something unique and different that we've never seen before and that's what people are responding to. He's dominating in multiple ways than matter where he is right. This is dion sanders. Didn't matter were dion sanders. Played that matter were bo. Jackson played bo. Jackson played for the kansas city. Royals one of the smallest markets and baseball. If you were but like yeah. I think he would. I honestly don't think it has even a bit to do with where he plays if he played for the pirates and they had the same record as the angels do right now absolutely if he was doing the same stuff. Be a little weird. Because he'd be in the national league the whole pitcher budding saying like your favorite city. Saint louis be huge deal. I mean but like i don't really matters any city he's in he's he's absolutely the same monster star that he is right now. So congratulations you went to the angels. They're still bad. How's that working out for you. there you go. I don't know if you'd have harry ford because that's another high draft pick that you end up with right number twelve draft pick this year. Did you love the harry. Ford bronco dudes an athlete. He could jump our see the like sixty injured. Jump metcalf a little competition here. Mr ford not in baseball because decays terrible. Dia did you see this. The beginning celebrity off now he was trying to hit ball out of course field but he did make contact correct. He should've gone. Did you see later. Von miller laid down a bunt. "Well that's because marco out there in the building because we're about to have the second part of this conversation is great as those three guys have been you know conversation three and they the the last six games of the sees of the first part of the season. Anyway really you can't compete with only three serviceable pitchers starters. You got more than three pitchers marco right now is not a major league pitcher. I know he is in his history but the way he's pitching right now. Not major league. Quality justice sheffield not major league quality. Justin done hurt. Everybody else hurt. Hector cynthia i mean nice. Nice bullpen guy. But i think there's a reason he's been pitching out of your bullpen and he gave you something serviceable in three innings but these bullpen starts like. It's too often like you can do. You can get away with those over the course of a year but every five or six games. And there's nothing in teton. Nothing we've seen the best they have to offer robert. Douger the duggar family. That's not gonna do it. He's he's So what what are you sniffing out here where we lead in here. Don't you think those first three. And don't you think j crawford and and the rest of the crew in don't you think the rest of them through ninety games of said. Hey man we. We deserve the opportunity to get one more arm in here. And if justin done comes back and marco can turn it around gravy but we need another bona fide legitimate at a minimum for three or four starter in this league. Because it's not it's not like you can have too much right ever. You can have never have too much and you know because you've had so many injuries your there's almost an assumption like well. Okay the other guys are going to be fine. But we don't know what's going to happen with kukuchi here right logan gilbert's throwing mornings than he has right. I mean so like flexing. We've never seen him before this year. So we don't know what his stamina is and how deep into assembly we bullpens are incredibly fickle and they're unbelievable right now and don't get scored on and everything else into august and september. That usually changes. You gotta go. Add one to two starting pitchers seriously. And maybe you wanna kinda sof step into that and maybe not commit all the way right at the beginning. But don't you have to add at least one. If not two starters to this group in order to move them forward. I think you do so. We talked about last week with some of those options are and talked about kyle gibson. We talked about Drew smiley. I know everybody. Sort of chuckled drew smiley. Ha ha well you want both of those guys of the way things look right now now. So that's that's number three. No hell scott some arms is the rockies rockies have a few guys and i know obviously they're all stars probably gonna be way way way marquez. Too expensive but yeah. There's there's some arms around baseball. And if i'm making that point to to mr stanton and empowering jerry dipoto think this group has earned the right to give them one more arm give them a bona fide opportunities and that doesn't even have to give up your top five prospects right. I mean you can give up a guy in the ten to twelve range that maybe maybe not gonna make the big one day. I mean one is sort of the like extra piece of the paxton deal he might bring you back a guy who was maybe get. You drew smiling right. He's not going to last you. Forever is not going to be incredible. But if he got back through smiley when you part with that i would I would absolutely give that up and if it turns out that he turns into something one day. Okay fine i mean those are the risks. It's pretty clear. With how many holes the mariners roster has right now that they're not in a win at all costs by mode at the deadline. But jared photos pretty clear if they're gonna add they're gonna add to this team and it's going to be not at a cost of prospects. This is the time now when you can say we planned at some point to contend and we planned at some time to open up some money to do it and now we're going to bring on some costly veterans that don't cost prospects to get us over the hump get it done. Big picture market conditions. Right now we've got a couple of weeks right before the trade deadline from everything. I've heard nobody really wants to start selling. Nobody wants to be the first seller and set the market. Okay right so that's why this thing. Well we want someone so yeah we know it's not that we're not gonna trade them. We're just not ready to be the first ones into the pool here. And the mariners scheduled coming out of the all-star break right to the angels right to the angels. Yeah they go With the angels and then colorado oakland houston print media pretty much the deadline texas. So yeah i mean you're gonna play some teams right. I mean you're gonna find out whether or not your not in colorado which they've been one of the best home teams as obviously are and the astros sit atop you and your own division double digits above five hundred good things eventually. It's going to get easier. You're gonna play tampa new york again but there's a lot of games against texas in there. There's a bunch against kansas city. You play arizona. Who's absolutely awful. You play them for six games in a home and home right kansas city. I mean there's some really bad teams on your schedule. Left to come that you should be able to take advantage of so you got to have the horse to take advantage because what you're seeing in your rotation right now not good enough another observation brock. Your guide jp crawford's just in the middle of everything know just anything positive that happens. We've spent probably too much time talking about him so we don't need to go too deep inuit but he's just whenever you need a big but right before the haniger home run right the big grand slam. There's jp crawford just finding a way on base to preserve that thing and give haniger chance to win it. And he does the amazing pretty remarkable and i was looking at the draft that went down and i know we'll get a little bit of that as well and just hearing some of the narrative and the commentary man you look at the i sixty picks and it's shortstops catchers center fielders. It's pitchers it is all up the middle right first baseman. Good luck to you. Third baseman in there are few second baseman. I think in the first sixty picks but it is shortstop shortstop shortstop world catcher world. Pitcher world is always is in in fields. It can absolutely ronin cover ground to be strong up the middle and have jp and he was such an intriguing centerpieces so much conversation coming into the season right in. What is he going to be. This is this is. This is the make or break for his entire career. But this is for your narrative here in seattle. And for the trust that you want to gain with jerry dipoto is. They're building this thing and and looking at all the pieces and shortstop market after this season. That's going to be as hot and maybe even the earth. The trade deadline as it's ever been was superstars and big big names. He's put himself right right into that. Mix the san yep. I'm not going back down. let's go. It's fun thing my macy's in these. Au tournaments and you get to chicago and you get you know seventy courts that they lay down at the cormack center and you get to see you know right. Here's michigan. Here's michigan crossover. all right. here's the team out of miami team outta outta dallas. Here's the cow stars. Let's go let's see how you measure up and it's fun you know just competitive highest level see fit and for j p crawford in shortstop market. That is loaded with superstars who've done way more than he has. Who's back there. Baseball card is is much stronger. And there's no competition about that but for these ninety games of importance to their individual team finding another shortstop in this league. That's been just you know that transformative through ninety games for their ballclub really really list. Val good good lead into the to the last sort of big observation of the end of the first half which is love relegated rally kid phenomenon is great and i just wanna be clear rally kid much better than maple grove which is better which is better real. Genuine natural not forced completely. You know unique in came system londonderry detour. Mike you went well out of your will. I'm talking about how rally caused at the maple grow..

"Show horrible this again. And they seem to be less news today. You can actually make a pretty good show. Finals are going on still tons of good stuff going on right now but not that day man. It was it was as low as low gets. We fully ran out of things to talk about. So we'll get to the all star game here in a minute because there's some good stuff kind of coming out of that and some conversation but you know start with how the how the first half of the season ended here for the mariners broncos. I i think there's a lot of telling stuff that occurred really just in that last six games you have the two losses to the yankees and i think there's stuff to learn there and then you have the fact that that could have been it for them right. That's a pretty good like all right. We're done here. We did what we came to do right. It's like the guy or woman who gets into the presidential race because they want to like get some of their issues out there and then you know people talk about them for a little bit and then they go to like you know amy klobuchar right. I go to super tuesday. They get there. I guess i'm good but now just go endorse somebody. I'll give it up. I did what i came to do. Maybe i've got myself a spot speaking at the convention and maybe give this runnin for years. When i'm ready and that that's an opportunity to do that. I mean you get squashed two games by the yankees. Who just hit everything. Beat the guy that supposedly your ace and you say kukuchi five runs in the first couple innings. Let's go home those fun. We gave it a good run. Let's call up the kids and see you later. Competing was fun but instead they come out the next day. Logan gilbert dominates a very impressive lineup. That was hitting on all cylinders just the day before and the day before that and the next thing you know you win three straight you find. Drop the last game before the break and we can talk about why that happened. But what another incredible just Ability to stick to it not give god love that element of this team. It felt in just just in twitter and social media circles and just hearing here we go again right just that it just felt in that. First game against the yankees. You just get your doors off as you said with coochie. Oh my gosh you're supposed to be the stopper chef mad again. Just f sheffield not not again. Please please not a in there right before the you know all this. You build me up only let me down and all of that narrative you just kinda kinda sense that you kind of felt maybe at least i did is not that i went looking for it but maybe i was going to happen but it was definitely out there cynical mariner friends of mine that have just been this road for a couple of decades now and you thought okay. Here's the one in five home stance you know all the ground you got about five hundred. You're going to be now back at five hundred you're to be six seven games out the yankees are gonna pass you in the wildcard. All of it right you just to that sense and then as you said logan said not on my watch i'm gonna out eight. I'm gonna walk zero totally. Shut this crew down through seven innings. I'm gonna take care of the angels and the biggest superstar and all of sports right now or certainly a baseball and and we're going to win that series. You're going to split it. Go five hundred going to salvage it and feel pretty good about yourselves going into this so a couple of things. There's maybe four or five conversations that come out of those five or six games. So let's see if i can run through a few of them. The first is art. Yes you finally get your win with logan gilbert in game three but i would argue that the way you handled game. Two of that yankee series ends up leading to the next few games you get down as you mentioned in the five o. Whole early with kukuchi. You just doesn't have it and yet. And i'm i'm gonna talk about him in a minute because i think there's a conversation there but i'll give him credit he obviously didn't have as good stuff. His velocity was off by a few. Ticks isn't as command cetera et cetera. And he's still gives you five right now. That's not a great day. Gave up five runs in five innings going to hurt the era. He didn't play the stop or roller or anything like that. But he didn't give you two and then get knocked out of the game and now you're going full then in the second day in a row you got you through five and then credit cards. The which doesn't give up runs anymore. Right does their thing to kind of keep you in the game and you battled back. That game came down to the final battle. The game they won run game now. They couldn't do anything against some pretty good Relievers that the yankees have but once again the fight in this team just not give up and quit even down five nothing in the second innings of the yankees like no. We're going to keep battling we're going to keep scrapping and they get themselves almost back to two tying or winning the game and i wonder if that's enough to carry through to the next day. Well what's beautiful about baseball. And i think what i have learned through these journeys of one hundred sixty two games. Mike is is to your point. Right there kukuchi getting through five and at least saving some gas in the tank. What role did that play. Maybe not necessarily the next day is logan nails but in the series against the angels like you just never know how to completely measure that until you know. It's in the rear view mirror but there's no question about it that you know him sucking it up and in him badlaney and giving you five and and just at least saving some of those innings. Some of those pitches some of those arms so you could use them and when you didn't need them over the weekend to to as you said continue to be nails so that's one to kukuchi. We can't talk about having into that. Okay is he the stopper and he'd be an as you get you get beat around the day before. Twelve one sheffield's pert bad. Whatever whatever you want to describe his start as it it was it was really eye-opening in a negative way. All of the above. Yeah for for a guy that i really had high hopes for this year and kikuchi. You're all star is just been named to the all star team his first start coming off the all star naming and he lays an egg right now. Maybe he's hurt. I know he had some stomach issues right and he went on the i l. for a couple days maybe cova protocol and trying to figure out exactly not going to pitch in the all star game but that's a tough start for a guy that you're saying. Okay you're the ace. You're that you're the you're the top guy on this team right. You wanna get paid the big bucks next year. I'm not saying that this means you don't pick up the.

"Or you can what he's talking to me and then i came over and not enough time. I guess sharing time with with with guys and he's been fantastic fortnight for me to come over like he's been three years ago when i came over amid poll. Understand what you guys. And i'm very sorry for you i. It was a shock for me before the reasons. Because i wasn't that close to him but him stevie represented something. When we were young. We can even touch. I want to welcome in donaldson who has been writing. Pull mariners photography. I suppose you knew already considering all those people. You've been reaching out to to compile this book what a loved man pool mariner ause since we put in the front cover on social media. The number of people have said women forward by ian gillan of deep purple. But that was one of these best powells. And i got the message last night done when i was writing chapter twelve of the book and i was absolutely laughing because chapter twelve is music. It's his relationship with ian gillan deep purple one of the biggest bonds in the seventies despondent and got back together at knebworth in one thousand nine hundred eighty five. I dig back. So mariner was invited ian gillan to drink whiskey. And the motorhome. Before hines with teddy brute children russell osman so then they went to the stage and they sat down beside the stage and there was no one sitting in this place that they sat so the three decided. They would sit there as well. They were sitting on ten thousand pounds worth of fireworks. Which would have taken out. Seventy five thousand people was palmar. You've reached out to a lot of former teammates and people that knew him. Well mark and and i imagine what you're hearing the voice describing the studio is stories that you've heard from everyone around the world. Yeah you know what the funny thing is done. Most of the stories. I've had spoken over forty different. People still got more people to speak to. Bowl is at the end of all the stories. Those always want. Oh by the way. We haven't really spoken much about football or yeah. Let's talk about that. But the boys i mean it was getting teary. I've been not you've been like not all day. It's gonna harder today. Even though we knew what was coming and his partner vowel. who. Obviously i'm liaising with with regards to the. The boo had getting contact numbers and video. The things she sent me a full two on medwick. It was wednesday when paul was. He's hospice beds. What's in the england game. And they'd put one of his england shots on him and there's a photo of him with vile with georgia on and with his mum. Peggy who's inter- early nineties and paul's a smile on his. That was the last full to. They took a poll. Modern are on. He's he's going to two ways and it meant the world to me everyone else. I just hope that when this comes in a couple of months time that it can do him justice because was story. This guy has got to tell. I've just got to tell well for him. And i might that as well thank you very much. I want to bring in alexis. New nice to the shy was well who is so close with poop alexis basically when you moved to connecticut developed this incredible relationship with him yet. I mean shaq called me earlier. When of course the news broken and i mean he didn't even have to say anything just immediately broke down because i think to know paul marano was truly to love him and you know everyone used to say that. You're so lucky. You have a co worker. That's like a father figure to you. And i used to tell people he's honestly my sixty eight year old best friend. He was truly such an amazing person to meet you know. I'm very thankful that. I got to see him last week. And we were still you know cracking bonds as much as he could talking about how frustrated he still will forever be With arsenal how proud of this england setup he really is and that he's still tunes into the show. Espn afc no matter what you know. He absolutely loved us. All there and i know that we loved him so much on one of the things that i've really been taken aback with is the fact that people on social media have reached out to each one of us and especially me and said that they've all commented on mariners chemistry with each and every one of us not just me of course i was constantly posting him. But i think that that's something that you know. I was talking about something. You can't fake something you can't buy. There was definitely a special reason. Why is seemed like mara's got on with pretty much anybody that walked into that. Espn studio and one thing. That i will always remember for him. Is that in this job. You know we we talk about football so much. We're taught to be really objective journalists and whatnot and sometimes after years and years of doing that it can nullify or neutralize your passion and your love for the game. You just watch it as just another game and mara's never did that with the sports. He always showed his passion for any team. He used to play for whether it was ipswich whether it was arsenal. Whether it was england you know he always had such passion and i think that that's something that i will forever remember. It reminds us of how lucky we are to be doing. What we're doing your reminds us. Why football release the beautiful game and it reminds us that you know. It brought us all closer to paul. Mariner and i think that from this day forward. I hope we continue to do this. Show as passionately as we know marriage would have wanted us to beautifully. Said alexis thank you very much. Alexi says major outpouring on social media from a lot of offerings. Hey craig we knew. It was coming but yesterday when we lost.

"Not being the clubhouse and sticking the whole team hotel and you realize that scott service has to wear a mask throughout an entire game well his players many of whom have chosen not scott by the way it's been vaccinated for months now right. Many of his players have not been vaccinated. They don't have to wear a mask he's sitting there and one hundred degree nascar fans. Yes if i'm scott. I'd be so mad like i have to wear a mask because you won't get vaccinated unvaccinated. I don't know said take massgov. Brock i gotta tell you i agree with you on this and i know it's going to surprise you i agree with you have been. I've been vaccinated this. If i have no issues being in a room with somebody who hasn't been now. If those same people were going to be going into my kids school. I might have an issue because my kids haven't had an opportunity to be vaccinated but if but everyone who's in an. Nfl building is over. The age of twelve has had that opportunity. I don't mind the fact that the other. Let's call them thirty percent. I don't know what the numbers let's say it's thirty percent that of choosing not to be vaccinated right if they want to take that risk. I'm fine with it as long as they're fine with the repercussions of it. Yeah right like i mean. That's a choice that has been made. I'm totally one hundred percent. Good with people making their own decisions about their own life. So i've chosen to go the path that i'm going to go seventy percent of the of the. Nfl is likely going to do the same thing. once i've evacuated pretty safe like i mean isn't that the whole point of this isn't that you've got to get to a critical point right you've got have enough people vaccinated for the work and let me so there's some there's some things that have any percents point that's been throwing natural immunity through about it. I just i don't honest. i do not understand. I can't wrap my not even dig into the politics and the divisive nature all. I'm just trying to wrap my head like okay. Peyton and all those other players are vaccinated. What do you care if that player that that may have natural immunity by the way. What argument in brooklyn you say natural immunity. You're saying because you've had virus develop you've had no. They've developed the antibodies through getting the virus. Which is me and my entire family and test to show. That and i have natural long lasting durable. Antibodies test. force you have that. why why. Why ostracize though again. I don't care whether you have bodies are not do i that you have antibodies or not. Here i do. I care that i've been vaccinated enough other. People have been vaccinated. That i feel safe okay. I don't really care what anybody else does. I'm not here to force anybody to do anything. If you don't wanna get it don't get it. I don't care. But like jon rahm have to deal with consequences from that right and ultimately those rules will probably soften here in the next few weeks and months. We're getting awfully close to that happening. Jon rahm understood the risk. He was taking by the way he handled it like a throw. And it's a reason. I was psyched for him last week. Like i'm not mad at jon. Rahm for not getting vaccinated. I don't think he's stupid or anything else. He made a an educated decision. Made the price for it. He handled it like an adult and a professional and they went back out the next week and one good for him. You know great. For jon. Rahm only argument i could make here is if i were an nfl team. I would say well you play for me. I pay your contract. Your your exhibiting risky behavior mckim to not wearing a seatbelt. And i'm just making an argument that an nfl team would make akin to not wearing a seat belt. Or you know. Dangerous skiing in the offseason. Whatever the sort of things that are already in contracts your maleek mcdowell linguis- you're deciding to go jump on atv without a helmet and if you get truly sick and end up missing games and or seasons from this i want to pay you for it. Because it's your choice to do it now. If the if players would stipulate that would you be like would you be okay with stipulating that if the players were then not forced to mask up and then stipulate if you get the flu and something that we have had for decades and players say different right. They're gonna say that. There is a specific vaccine for this that somebody is choosing not to take and if and that's fine but if but if me the team in this case the paying entity the management is forced to pay out money because of a choice that someone else's made not willing to pay the money for that sorry and i think a number of those players aren't would say fine like ninety nine point nine nine nine nine nine percent of us. Don't you think that should be the solution of this. Yes yes okay. You just came up with a solution by being somewhat reasonable. We have we you. And i have a hundred eighty degree. Different views on cove on the vaccine on management on life and politics religion. You name it. You and i disagree on yes and somehow in five freak and minutes you and i were able to come up with a conclusion that satisfied both of us correct. Correct forget it together. Nfl this shouldn't be that hard broken. I did it for our next next to write off. Got the ncaa question was a big nice primer. That we haven't finished brockton quite done now taking us twelve years. It's obviously more complicated than kovin. rum does win the us open then. Then that's a story. But i was just thinking about how every other star faded right. You're watching on sunday. Come hurry.

And i can't figure out why it's got to have something to do with being in seattle And i think. I think david ortiz thing is the postseason right. Never got that chance even even though he did perform when he did get the chance but he didn't get the chance on the big big big stage like poppy too. Yeah right. yeah. But that's what i'm saying that's like there's your but you come up with seriously. If you if you say list five top three even top three best of all time you have to have edgar martinez in there. You have to absolutely have to no matter what i mean. You'd be a fool not to so he was. He's my number three. And okay i refuse. I refuse to move him down to number. that's fine. hey let's let's take a quick break when we get back. Let's talk about your number two brig. Okay.
" mariners" Discussed on Baseball Together Podcast
"Look at this here of course so edgar martinez three twelve three twelve lifetime average nine thirty three career opie i mean hello and then in ninety five. He had he career year. Ninety five. griffey missed some time. So he was bumped up a little bit in the in the batting order. Got few more at bats came out batting brig three fifty six with an opium s of one point one zero seven on base percentage four seventy nine and for a guy who hits for average and does not hit big twenty nine home runs. I know finish third in the mvp voting to your point. Fifty two doubles that ninety five season. And you know what the thing that's funny about that is that none of those stats include the important role that he had in the ninety five. Lds against your new york yankees My yeah there. It is because he had double double but also had a grand slam. He had a grand slam in that series. The brought the mariners back from the brink in game. Four right yes. They should've lost that game instead. Martinez the grand slam to straight away. Centerfield busts out the right bread and mustard. Grandma that's right. So i mean aside from those though i mean he was after griffey left seattle. He was the cornerstone of the franchise. Him and ichiro for the cornerstone of the franchise. And i mean. I think his leadership was a big reason that team one hundred sixteen games in two thousand and one. And whether he was a vocal guy in the clubhouse. I don't know you know. I was only fifteen years old at the time. Sure but so. I wasn't paying attention to that stuff but it felt like it was edgar. His team and he was leading that team to every single win. You know bret. Boone was doing the backflips. Jbl was hitting home runs by edgar. Martinez was the guy who was pushing that team along. So i don't know. I mean that's just the way i saw it. That's the way i it. You're really the entire time. His using seattle You know one of the big knocks on him is that he was a defensive liability. He didn't play much defense. He played a little bit third baseman. Here disney could play defense anymore. I don't know if the mariners would have done that. They'd ever made it to the world series. Because i would have been trouble winning two games on the road probably because he didn't have his bat except pinchitting situation but and he's also a guy as my dad said he. My dad always said he ran like he's out of the ground which i thought was really funny and also very true. Yeah that's right. well he spent. That's that's enough in seattle eight. Yeah let's plenty of an opinion. Yeah he spent his whole career in seattle. He's a guy who like i. I watched him from the beginning of my watching baseball until he retired. Two thousand four. When i graduated high school and like at that point i was just like gosh a note to do you know right anyway. What do you say about your break. Because i'm assuming you have him on your list. I do just wasn't number two brad. That's fine offered. no. I've said i mean everything you said i was gonna say and then i added the eighteen season. Seattle and yeah. I just just crazy to.

"Of feeling yes and save for me. Randy johnson has like just such a special place in my heart. I feel like you can't leave him off because like i said the role that he played on that team in those playoff runs like he was a twenty game winner in ninety seven when the mariners made the playoffs again he was an all star that season he was also an all star. Ninety three ninety four ninety five won the cy young award ninety five and like he didn't strike fear or king felix did not strike the feared two batters. That randy johnson did. Hey now that's that's the one hundred percent true. There's because again. Are you with that. Because i feel like with with king felix a nervousness of you. Know what's gonna come but you still can't hit both randy johnson. This guy might have a screw loose. I don't know where the ball's gonna come. He probably doesn't know where it's going to come. And i don't know if it's going to be one hundred. Three mound are fastball over. It's going to be in ninety. Nine are slider. Yep you know so like there was like a physical fear put into batters that very few other patriots have had course of over the course of a lifetime. He threw his first. No no in nineteen ninety cy young award winner ninety five and four thousand. Eight hundred seventy five strikeouts. That's strikeout nine of ten point six. Yeah he also had one thousand nine one thousand four hundred ninety seven walks which is pretty good for a guy with those kind of control issues and you know just shy at seven feet tall. Yeah yeah that was. One thing that i thought was funny that that yes the ball is coming out of his hand at one hundred plus because he's stepping halfway to the to the plate and he had he had a unique motion. You know a lot of guys have their arm at ninety degrees when they throw but he had that three quarter arm slot cocked. Where was yeah. Yeah it was like a sling. Coming out of there where yeah especially. Since armor so long for left handed batter the ball is starting four feet behind. You then have to swing back across the plate. Everything feels like it's coming at you at that point. Yeah yeah so as long as mustaches. And his mullet. That moore was males. But he just wouldn't been stockcar. That's the only difference. Exactly exactly the one problem. I have with randy. Johnson is that he went into. And i don't blame him for this. He went into the hall of fame as a diamondback as an arizona diamondbacks and you know he. He had good years in arizona. He won a world series of the diamondbacks. So i totally get that. They always wish that he had gone in as a mariners because he had he was so dominant in those years. But you know i can. I could see it because he was one. Two three four five time all star with the diamondbacks last time was when he was forty so it is what it is whatever. It's fine he's he's my he's the fourth guy. My mount rushmore. That's pretty good man i. I can't argue with you As far as not picking king felix. What i can do is tell you that you've left out. Arguably the most important personality in the entire franchise off your mount rushmore. Oh.

He's four fifty seven his rookie season and he never got above that again and rarely got over. Four hundred. you know. A lot of people call him a slap hitter because he was just slapped ball on base but united talked about the value of getting a guy on bass and we saw that with the mariners. Especially now one-season. There were guys who a could hit home runs. You had bret boone batting right behind each euro. That season who was May or may not have been using. I don't know i'm not gonna say but but batting right behind him but he sure hit a whole lot of home runs that season regardless of the situation and each year was on base for a lot of them so that turns solo home. Run into two run home. Run at least exactly and that's that's the whole point. Well it's not forget. He took home tate. Ten straight gold glove awards from a a wonder two thousand ten at at top. Yeah it is and you know. They had the the fan area out there in right field to call area fifty one which i thought was pretty cool And you know. I actually read at one point. I think is his rookie season. Where he said the reason he chose number fifty one. Do you know what that was no. He's a big bernie. Williams fan kid out. That's what i read that rookie season. I don't know how much truth there is to but that's something that i saw. That's that's fantastic. Cool tastic yeah thought. It was great. Cool all right. Let's see if they right. Who's your who's your number. Four k me and my number four is the big randy. Johnson i was wrong uses ed king felix thought so with king felix real quick. Let me tell you why. I didn't choose king felix k and it was strictly because he never pitch in a playoff game which i know is not his fault yousafzai young award winner but the fact that he was not able to get there. You know like. I said pitcher nyse fault but but i feel like you've got to have that on your resume and randy. Johnson actually was the reason at one point. The mariners got into the playoffs because they had to play one game. Playoff in ninety five against the at the time. California angels And he came in and closed that game out struck out it. Was tim salmon to win. The game. so bad that would know that is ready to announce instead.

"Welcome back baseball family now. During the break brandon. I had a little bit of an exchange happenings. Very exciting. I said rather boldly that i believe i know who his number three and number four picks will be. I also told him that. I think are number. His number three in my number two which has yet to be revealed are the same but that our number fours are going to be different so in an effort to preserve the integrity of our little experiment. I told brad has said. Look i'm gonna. I'm gonna send you a text message with my guesses because he's like prove it. No i can't then you'll cheat and i said well so you so. I texted him. Got time stamp on it. He's not looking at his phone. We're very excited to bring you this very exciting more for us than anything else. So we'll see what happens but okay my number two since we've gone out of order. My number two. Pick for the seattle mariners. Mount rushmore is ichi. Row suzuki k. That is my number three. Yes yes oh. I'm halfway there baby halfway okay. Who okay. so now suzuki kate. Let's go context here. When a player comes from japan. It's not always a done deal. You can have a terrific career in japan and be lights out just be automatic and then you can come to major league baseball and things. The wheels fall off right it just a few players that pulled off successfully but there's only one player that's done it way. suzuki has. it's just insane. So he has with seattle from two thousand one to two thousand and twelve short break. Well i mean six years is not short and then two thousand eighteen twenty nineteen came back right. Well yeah twenty. I mean if that's what you wanna call it. I mean he played fifteen games in twenty eighteen and then he played two games in that japan series and twenty nineteen so basically he came back Ceremoniously during that time. But we've got a good ten years out of him for yes yes. He's the all time leader in hits. With twenty five forty two for the mariners. Four hundred thirty eight stolen bases also leads that category and he has the highest career batting average. Three twenty one across the entire franchise history now. The team was inaugurated. What nineteen seventy. Seven yeah houser. Initial season so That's that's not a tremendous amount of history to top. But it is nothing. It's it's nothing to shake a stick at at three twenty one career leading the franchise with at least ten years. That's pretty good Well and we did see that there is that staff came across On the on the nine plus group..

"That was like two weeks. It's like the last month of the season in chicago. A lot of people forget about that number seventeen with the white sox playing right field at the agent. What do you think about. It tells you your thoughts on the kid. Well so i mean you hit the nail on the head transcended baseball. You know the iconic backwards at the most beautiful swing. We have ever seen to date. I don't know of anybody who has kind of them. And cody bellinger. You could see kind of tries to mimic it. A little bit One time i noticed. His stance is very similar to griffey's He's changed it up since then His swing is a little bit in that direction. But i think that might just be. Because he's a lefty But i think you can see. There are some inspiration drawn there which is obvious. You know the kid who grew up in an mlb clubhouse but i mean griffey had influence over an entire generation of fans the only other guy can think of who had that kind of influence was michael jordan and their contemporaries playing in the midnight in the nineties early two thousands for sure their contemporaries and and you know as like my you know every day every kid playing baseball wanted to be like griffey And you know one thing that. I don't know how well known. This is about. His influence on the game is that griffey is his approaching. Bud selig is the reason that a they have. Jackie robinson day where everybody wears number forty two and also the reason. The jackie robinson's number is is retired across major league baseball. That's right ken. Griffey junior had that idea brought it to bug the but see like and it was executed. So i mean more than just on the field he i guess that's mostly on the field. But across the entire game that he understood the importance of jackie robinson his life and the league and he felt like it was important enough that everybody should understand that. And i think it's great. I thought when. I heard that i thought it was amazing. Somebody who cares way more about way more things than just himself because it could have been easy for him to be selfish his entire career. Oh for sure you know and you can argue that there were times. Be everybody's got to be selfish at some point you know. When he asked out of seattle we saw the junior documentaries because he was miserable he was. We wanted to be with his family. And i can't fault that especially especially being a dad you know but you know this the impact that he had on my favorite team growing up the i. I've spoken to people over the last few years. It's like i don't know why honestly if you didn't grow up in the pacific northwest. Why anybody be manners fan and the same answer. Every time is i grew up watching griffey like there. You go there you go well. Any japan You know what. I mean any any. Yeah all of the ten all star teams. That's transcendent right there. That's that's how you become a fan of griffey if you didn't grow up there in any way. Green griffey jr wins. He just as a winner wins all of the things that you can win so the gold glove every single year. He was in seattle. Is exactly he wins. All the things you can win. it's the thing does. Yeah yep absolutely saved baseball in seattle. I mean we can't..

"Mariners Seattle Mariners are an eighty one team will always be in eighty one team unless they win less because I mean this team is never going to clips with an eighty five wins within the next five years. I mean, I think same team in the sense that we can say something about that minus a World Series appearances the Mets two teams that were both at the top of the standings just a couple of weeks ago. Now, we're now are basically crashing and burning. I mean, we obviously had a highlight from four at the time of this recording in, you know. To a shutout had the only run. But other than that. I mean things have not been looking good for the Mets and Mariners. No, not at all. And you look at the you look at the Mariners this out thirteen to I believe now they're eighteen fifteen lost three last seven only a plus to run differential their whole Killys. He'll was their starting pitching in their bullpen. And it's finally caught up to them. No surprise there. They play in a not great division. It's not bad. But it's not top. It's not the best one the league you have Houston whose legit. They started out. Pretty rough start at like sticks and stay five and six they want ten around their backup their Oakland Sarda hot. They're gonna fall off. But they'll bounce back at some point. But the Rangers stink in the in LA stinks as well. And the Mariners are right back in there around five hundred they don't want to compete. They wanna make money. It's a moneyball thing. They're gonna make money people love sports out in Seattle. And with the whole each euro thing this year, they made even more. So good for them. Good for the ownership. Bad for the fans, kinda sucks. The mets. We talked about on here. I hated the moves in the off season. I thought the C need to rebuild. They went out to try and extend the window right now. And it's kind of meeting them, you know, head up right now, they started out pretty hot. Now. They're only one game ball five hundred. And it took, you know, Thor today complete game ten ks. No runs. He hit the only home run their bullpen. They burdened D as their bullpens been anything, but reliable so far in theaters finally struggled the other day familiar, Iraq. They just fade their starting catcher because he's been so bad. And could no said Jim need to miss a couple of games. Shocker. They're they're young guys are playing well Alonzo McNeil, but the veterans have disappeared as always in the Mets are going back to what they are. Which is just a mess. They've guys on the injury list. They don't know why Coleman on and off..

"Prospects all using one season ticket package and that's our marketing team took that information in greeted at the also created one that was a little bit more business focused and so we've been testing that and I think that's when we look at kind of some of the changes over time in general with marketing and sales in the relationships over time that has evolved as well you know I think I'm curious to hear also what you are able to learn share with some of your counterparts in other teams. I can't imagine that Microsoft and apple and Google are sharing marketing and sales ideas very often but in your competitors really are competitive. You're sort of the other teams and other markets. You don't necessarily compete with for these ticket sales. How much sharing is there between yourself and your counterparts at some of the other teams Major League Baseball on perhaps teams your counterparts in other sports while you're right? We don't compete. We compete on the field but we don't necessarily compete in the market so I would say across M._l._b.. There's quite a bit of sharing both on the marketing <hes> side but also the sale hillside and we meet regularly we have regular calls sharing best practices. Each market is unique so that can be challenging but we are often talking to each other about how really two to raise the profile of the industry in general and then certainly outside of the industry there are outside of M._l._b.. There are other leagues that we consult with on a regular basis. I am not above ever of picking up the phone and calling someone that I saw a great idea. How did you do it? How did it work and I think that that's something that we encourage? I mean we encourage our our team to do that. Across the board in this market as well as outside market okay awesome just couple more minutes here with Francis Trace when the senior vice president of sales at the Seattle Mariners and I'm curious as you as you build your sales team in as you look to hire new sales reps and then a lot of people probably think it'd be a lot of fun to work for a professional sports organization nation but at the end of the day it is still it is a job is a sales job. You have to hit your number. <hes> they're just like anywhere else what are some of the attributes of good sales reps and good new hires you look for are they different for ticket sales versus corporate sales in you know what kind of experience Rodriguez are you looking for some of your ideal neck sales. That's a really good question. I mean I think are fundamentally. People need to have just a general first of all a desire to work ethic you. You you'd said it best sale. I've always wanted to work in sports or I roy's wanted to work for. The mariners is key to that is work. Now is the key to that phrase so I think there's just an overarching fundamental caring about in doing a good job. That is a fundamental. <hes> you know trait that we're looking for. Is that in your pass that something that you've been striving for is excellence in some area and overarching for me I think in order to the good at sales is really a general curiosity in interest you know there are a lot of people that can talk to prospects than <hes> consumers but really if you are curious. You're going to make the most of that conversation. You're going to lead that conversation into the next level so that to me is a trait that is perhaps a little under <hes> valued in general and certainly need to be organized. You need to have perseverance. Perseverence would be helpful to have some strategic thinking that those are some things we can help you with <hes> in general. I really believe that just a good solid person who wants to do the best job we can. We can help. We can teach you how to sell if you are a good person who has the desire to to be the best. That's great well last question as we wrap up here in just a couple more minutes. You've been with the Organization for over twenty years. It's it's it's impressive to me. How many senior leaders with the mariners have similar tenure Kevin Martinez with the organization? Almost as long as you have tim heavily who was back back in the day he was my boss when I was when I was an intern with the P._R.. Department with the Mariners when I was in school and still bill is the vice president of communications what are some of the advantages of having sort of course sales marketing leadership team that has such longevity in the organization but what are also some of the pitfalls that might come along with that in terms of sort of having some of the same four walls in the same perspective for such a long period of time that you have to watch yeah. I mean you've said it best way. I can't say enough about the organization why we've been here. We've all been here for so long. Is that while it's the same baseball played every a year. It's always something different. I mean it's very exciting industry to work in. It's constantly changing their new opportunities in in challenges each year so I think that that speaks to why I'm here why Kevin's Year Tim's here we also are very fortunate to have a extremely stable ownership group and a very supportive ownership group that that wants to be successful here in Seattle so so we're fortunate to have that and so with not not having the changes day to day that some other organizations have you know any kind of changing leadership can be challenging for an organization can be invigorating or it can be challenging. <hes> we do try to challenge ourselves. I think that's just inherent in our organization that it's not just time to make the donuts every day. We're we are always looking at. How can we do this better? How can we do this differently and it all comes back to our main? Focus is on our fan. You know we know that we have a baseball side that is focused on trying to have our baseball team win on the field but in the end what the things that we can control are the fan experience and how you feel when you're you're in contact with someone from our organization so I I would say we do a fairly good job internally of challenging ourselves in trying to get outside of just this is how we always do it. Love it will we are unfortunately at a time Wanna think again. I guess Francis Tradesman our senior vice president of sales for the Seattle Mariners like I said a lot of people listening to this <hes> it's the end of February beginning March depending on when you're getting this episode it may still be cold but baseball is right around the corner in the exciting new season the best time of year for every team. Every team is tied for first place and you never know what's going to happen on the on the field so thank you Francis for joining us. Thanks everyone for listening to another episode. We'll see you next time on sales pipeline radio. The way we do business is advancing faster than ever before yet amongst disruptions. There's one pillar that stay standing through it.
