"Our life like normal pediatrician. Dr. Sarah, the host asked. Why would you take that chance? It is a weeks long, sometimes inconvenience in your family for one child to catch Covid. Because all the other families family members are exposed and so then potentially can't work. When Washington was reopened. June 30th. It gave a lot of parents of false sense of security. The virus didn't make note of the calendar and thanks to a little complacency. And the easiest spreading variant to date. Covid has a grip on us once again, and I see the light at the end of the tunnel of the pandemic, But we are not through the tunnel yet. We have one big, cold and flu season. That's about to start in a couple months. I think that is the end of the tunnel. The advice is pretty straightforward, and you've heard most of it before. But when it comes to your unvaccinated kids the best way to keep them safe, as have them wash their hands often. Avoid large groups and always wear a mask when indoors outside of the home. Speaking of that mask, I've seen two ear infections in the last 15 months, and I typically see two per date. During cold and flu season, so the masking and the hand washing in the distancing Regardless of the concerns about Covid made a huge difference. Brian Calvert common use the Seattle Department Transportation reopened the Fairview Avenue North Bridge this weekend after being closed for a year and a half. "Seattle. We have forty one degrees. Komo news time is six so. Five four days until divide a closes. And what's expected to be at least three weeks if extremely challenging commutes. And that's putting it nicely. Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan will certainly be in the thick of all of this and joins us in the studio this afternoon. Would you say our city is ready for the closure mayor? I think we're ready as we can be. But we know dislike we saw earlier that there's a truck overturned. There's some things you can't prepare for. So we're trying to prepare not just for what we know. But the things we know can happen. In that regard mayor you brought in a new cabinet member under the title of director of citywide mobility, operations coordination, lengthy, title, retired US Air Force Major general Mike warden, a what role can he play relatively new to the area? So what kind of impact can he have as we get this going on on Friday right out of the gate. How much learning does he have to cram into to his situation? I think he's got a learning, but his experience is really tailor made for this job. You know, he was one of the finalists for the Seattle department of transportation when did the search everyone was really impressed with not just as operational background. But his ability to organize across departments and to do things under kind of emergency conditions, and we've got twenty nine departments involved in this everyone think about it as just Seattle department transportation, but you could have something involves city light the fire department Seattle police department everybody's got to play a role. So we need one person. In charge of that collaboration and oversight. It's going to be the major. I think he's going to do a really good job. But I put this out on Twitter asking people for questions, and they did wonder why are we paying to people who have never spent any time commuting in Seattle nearly five hundred thousand dollars a year to manage the traffic. So we're not the person that Sam Zimbabwe who's coming in and who will be running the Seattle department of transportation. They've got a lot of jobs other than traffic because you know, it's everything from filling potholes to build a new bike lanes to building new streets to doing the move Seattle. Levy, we've got an apartment there that is when I came in was under a tremendous amount of stress, and frankly hadn't been well managed, so SAM's gonna have his hands full getting his arms around that. They're obviously are gonna play a critical role in this. He's going to be here this next week. So he'll be there. He we talked about the majors role. But having one person who can focus across departments to make sure that when something happens like a fish truck. We can move quickly to try to get. Things moving. Again, city council member, Sean, Sean has reportedly written a letter to you. And also King County executive Dell Constantine asking for free transit during this three weeks stretch. I know ideally, she would like that as commonplace. But in this particular three week period at a cost of about ten million dollars. She would like to see free transit your thoughts on that. What we've seen is people are using transit right now more than they've ever done before. We put free transit for you throughout the city every Seattle public school high school student gets a free transit pass, which we hope will help. And what we're seeing more is people want more transit. So we don't think that the obstacle right now is the payment release making sure we can deliver more so working with metro as you know, is in charge of the buses not the city. They are delivering new shuttles for example in west Seattle that will pick people up take him to the water taxi or to the rapid ride bus. We've added an extra water taxi. So that more people can back and forth from west Seattle. We're gonna. Be doing the same thing in south Seattle after the convention center starts construction buses come out. So we gotta get people as many people as we can on transit an out of driving by themselves house the learning curve going for you you've been in the office for a year. Now, what kind of a grade do you give yourself, and what would you say the one thing where you feel maybe you're misunderstood? I think what I really look at. It is how is Seattle doing not how I'm doing. And I think Seattle is doing really, well we've had enormous challenges with the growth. Everyone knows. We grew super fast. I grew up here. And I think there's parts of the city even I almost don't recognize and with that has become more expensive to live here. A lot of people can't afford to. So the things we've really focused on. How do we really help people in their daily lives? How do we make it? So people can afford to live in Seattle loved to live in Seattle and provide real opportunity. And I think that's the thing that, you know, one thing you don't get as a mayor is a magic wand, none of this is going to be easier fast. But at the end, we almost literally a rebuilding the city, let's build that city. We one of the future that's going to be amazing. So when it comes down, it's gonna be tough. I don't have any do overs any moments that you wish you'd done differently yet. No. I think that you learn from everything both the things that went well in the things that didn't go. Well, and as mayor you've got to always with the thing that's most important for me to get out of city hall in to be out listening to people's much as I can. So I had over a hundred town halls last year just getting out neighborhood and community. And that's the part that if I did anything even do more of it because it's easy to get trapped downtown in city hall Bill looking at things on a piece of paper, not realizing how they affect people's lives Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan we greatly. Appreciate your time. You're welcome anytime in the studio. Thanks swing. I do have one quick question. What's the name you pick for the new hockey team? You know, I I want the and you're just like, Tom. I mean, the steelhead and all that is good. But they're not for Roche. Hi straggling? I'm kinda kind of like. There you go game of thrones thing. All right here. Durkin thank you so much. Thanks so much. Komo news time six eleven time. Now for sports from the Harley exterior sports. That's what do you think we got somebody with young McCracken? Two of us. Yes. I could actually go for a number of names, but cry you know, you gotta sale the merchandise. That's part of a name to right? They're going to get it all figured out, by the way. Gary Bettman the Commissioner of the National Hockey League is going to make a visit to Seattle come Wednesday. He'll me with the media Wednesday afternoon to talk about selling the sweets now. Some something you may have some personal. No, see what you need to do. Is you need to find you can become good friends with people who do get the sweets, and then they invite you all about that all about the freebies. All right. Hey, boy, I tell you what law of offense so far in this national championship game of college football, Alabama leading Clemson sixteen to fourteen they're just one minute into the second quarter down Levi's stadium in Santa Clara, of course for the Seahawks. Woulda coulda shoulda Saturday night down in the Lone Star state football like we like was part of it. But really the concern which is old subject for us. But that was an issue said coach Pete Carroll on the big problems offensively in the playoff loss Saturday night in Arlington to the Cowboys as the season has come to an end put a bow on. And maybe talk a little bit about what's gonna be next in the off season for the hawks guy who covers them for the news Tribune in Tacoma. Greg bell, always generous with his time. I'm greg. What did what did you make of what you saw Saturday night? And did a really come down to just those primarily anyway, those two elements running the football and the failure to convert on third down. What my really I mean, they were winning fourteen Penn in the fourth quarter doing that. But just going to thirteen and third down fifty nine yards by their running backs rushing. They still had the lead. It would have been a one score game. Had the defense held up at the bar. Yvonne, thousands final drive to pass interference penalties cagey. Right. And Justin Coleman on third down. Both obvious flags gift first downs of gave the Cowboys the eleven thirteen fourteen. They cannot tackle Dak Prescott on what? Good. A white flag called the Cowboys quarterback draw from the sixteen yard line looked like they wanted to just settle for the field.

So that we get traffic moving off the dock during the closure if you drive on once you leave the doc you are on your own. So the advice is be prepared for any traffic, you might face and remember the boats go when they go they won't wait just because you're caught in a jam Ryan Harris, KOMO news. Now, remember that closure starts this Friday at ten pm. And KOMO news is your source for all the help you'll need including traffic every ten minutes on the fours. Here's marina Rockinger. Well, northbound one six seven near eighth actually near Jovita. There is a flipped semi trailer on the right shoulder and northbound is definitely slowing down to see what's going on there because it is a big distraction crews are on scene, by the way, they're going to figure out how to get it out of there. But southbound is also really slow from just south of fifteenth street southwest down through the Pacific area. We are seeing slowdowns. "KOMO forecast. We have a low tonight expected to be in the upper thirties. Tomorrow rain back in the forecast with a high around forty five degrees currently in Seattle. Forty three degrees. Come on Easter. Four forty five. Stay connected. Stay informed. Komo news. Powered by triple a roadside assistance. With Elisa Jaffe, I'm Tom Glasgow. Jeremy grater is at the editor's desk. Good to have you with us. President Donald Trump's prime time address to the nation about the southern border will be aired live tomorrow by the major broadcast and cable television networks representatives, Ray, ABC CBS CNN, Fox News, FOX business network, MSNBC and NBC all confirmed plans to air the president's address. Samsung is blaming lackluster demand for memory chips for a decrease in its fourth-quarter earnings. It said that the increase in competition in smartphone. Marketplace is another reason we'll have more business news in just a few minutes four days until the viaduct closes. But we know just like we saw earlier that there's a truck overturned there some things you can't prepare for. How much learning does he have to kinda cram into to his situation? I think he's got a learning, but his experience is really tailor made for this job. You know, he was one of the finalists for the Seattle department of transportation when did the search everyone was really impressed with not just as operational background. But his ability to organize across departments and to do things under kind of emergency conditions, and we've got twenty nine departments involved in this everyone think about it as just Seattle department transportation, but you could have something about city light the fire department Seattle police department everybody's got to play a role. So we need one person. In charge of that collaboration and oversight. It's going to be the major. I think he's going to do a really good job. When I put this out on Twitter asking people for questions, and they did wonder why are we paying to people who have never spent any time commuting in Seattle nearly five hundred thousand dollars a year to manage the traffic. So we're not the person that Sam Zimbabwe who's coming in and who will be running the Seattle department of transportation. They've got a lot of jobs other than traffic because you know, it's everything from filling potholes to build a new bike lanes to building new streets to doing the move Seattle. Levy, we've got an apartment there that is when I came in was under a tremendous amount of stress, and frankly hadn't been well managed, so SAM's gonna have his hands full getting arms around that. They're obviously are gonna play a critical role in this. He's going to be here this next week. So he'll be there. He we talked about the majors role. But having one person who can focus across departments to make sure that when something happens like a fish truck. We can move quickly to try to get. Things moving.
