Gab and Juls: Is Mourinho to Blame for Spurs' Poor Form?

"It it's thursday. i'm gap. He's jewels jobs. We got so much stuff going on because mountie. She'll put your gino winning his first trophies manager. I think his first kofi ever i. We'll be joined by franklin buff to talk a little bit about that in a minute. Manchester united top of the league first time in january. First time since the sir. Alex ferguson era by your munich. Out of the german cups is i don't mean the be. Let's start with tottenham hotspur because we've been talking about their chances are they're going to be better worse than last year. How they're pushing. I feel like i've seen this again. I think they've dropped ten points from leading positions. They played fulham last night. You figure you know not easy but full no time to prepare as well. We'll get to that in a minute. And there's more count sempe gab. They take the lead the play well for twenty five minutes and then they stop the talking and they just want to protect that lead. They want to control the game to manage the game. But there's another hour to go. But he's not a bad idea necessarily when you've sawn and harry kane and all these counter-attackers but you don't even counterattack. You do nothing. You just sit deep and you just wait and we saw that against wolves. What wolf scored in the end we against palace. Guess what in the end and now we see that a home at home against fulham where you just stop playing hurricane. One sean tonga. The whole game. That's his goal twenty minutes in after that. Nothing just nothing and i just don't understand why i'm more for protecting your lead in the last ten minutes you bring another center box in or i don't know you you put back five and you you make sure that you don't leave to more space and etc but no one. There's an hour to go. Don't give not extra confidence to the opposition team. Don't invite pressure. don't let them play. I i take your point. I'm wondering if maybe this was a game. Where i thought was very good when he was on the pitch. This is maybe a game where i always mentioned him. But if you have a lasalle so that you can bring on that may be all of a sudden you can keep the ball more. You can keep the ball further away. You can be a little bit more balanced in in how you do it. You know rather than going. I mean if you're if you're just right now do you go and you knock it down. Levi's store and say look. Don't look at me. This is the best i can do in this thing. That's true i don't. I'm sorry. I don't think that's the best you can do. I don't know the price. I lease the last time i spoke to some of them. They were happy but since december the six when they went top of the table the seven in the league. They lost two hundred four. I mean this is. This is not good enough. This is just not good enough. And i think you could say your needs better player or you need different profiles there and they're still. I still think that he gets his wrong. That tactics is wrong because the pleasure doing what he says. he's saying. Okay win the lead saw against arsenal in a second of and they were up and that was fine and they managed to get out and okay good but as we said against war against pilots against on this. Just not good enough. I'm sorry you keep talking. Last night. In a game against tim against fulham who had played three days three days before with the strongest team in the africa because he didn't play again for another week. Yeah that's an important. Try just just want to talk about this because the full amount you're coming out and he wasn't happy i feel like scott. Parker never really gets angry. Because he's too angry as scott parker but i think he completely has a point right so the spurs were supposed to play aston villa. Aston villa can't play because they have they have a colbert outbreak. And so the league looks at and says allah predates spurs your available. You need to make up your game against fulham. Okay fulham you go play and we. That's monday afternoon. that's monday. He gets confirmation of this right full on themselves have had their own cove outbreak which wind their gaming in spurs was supposed bone. A lot of their guys are unavailable or aren't fully fit. You find out so late. You're supposed to go and prepare for games. Look i don't i understand. Why the primarily did this. It's necessary but understand too that this whole season comes with a gigantic asterisk because these are not normal conditions. And i feel for scott parker a little bit. That said i'm with you. I i don't see how. How taught tottenham through this game away and it's happened again and again and we don't we go out and this is why i have such an issue. People bring up and weaning mentality and all the stuff right mentality when they can't really explain something right so when i perhaps played poorly and they win. Oh it's mentalities as mentality waiting mentality. it's the same say it's the same entice not mentality. It simply perhaps an approach. It didn't work but also think credit to fulham for for believing and for really going for the equalizer and how the belief that they could go and get it but the the there were to do. I just think it's a real shame because i could have gone on to win that game three all right. Let's try to figure this out drills because when you're saying this is actual instructions from from marino to his team. Now as i see it it's more a case of i'm going to defend deeper because i defend well and i'm comfortable fending. I think that's what he's trying to engender. You know a lot of times. We talk about teams. That are comfortable playing without the ball teams that they can sit out. Good nick and play for hours and the other team can't get a shot off right because they're good and they're sitting deep and that's fine and then you have other teams that sit deep all desperate and flailing all over the place. Yeah is that what you see in tottenham. Did you see them as uncomfortable. When they were sitting deep. I just see they consider five in the last six games gained five hundred numbers. But it shows you that they don't defend what otherwise they will not goals. And i think i think if you invite the pressure you yourself in a position where the other team will have the opportunity and the chance to create chances and to to school goals you know and i just think i just think if you hurricane right yesterday. He's i mean he made fourteen passes one four fourteen passes against fulham at home in ninety minutes and this is the new hurricane. The guy who's number nine number ten at the same time right i. I mean. I don't know i don't know how we fees may be happy with the season with these numbers other. No but if i was a playoff visibility in a team like this where i would spend an hour of of that kind of game and i'm not talking. You know game against liverpool city where you know you have to put extra effort and defend because that can give you a win team against the team like these fulham where you hurricane and you you nothing for you in that game. You scored okay. Greg crossbar regular header. Perfect after you've got nothing. I mean i would be. I will be fuming. So you see this more as as an issue of that because it seems to me there is not attacking enough or are they just not good enough in terms of being comfortable. I just don't i just don't understand. Why don't why they stop talking in. They stop playing and want to defend the lead. Because part of me says. I know eric direst unwell since under marino but for me it's still eric dire part of me. Thinks that if. I'm playing dire donaldson sanchez. Who wasn't playing earlier this year and who. I'm not sure how i'm bored with marino is sergio year. Who has made progress. But it's still fundamentally an attacking full-back lawn who we know is talking football fullback. If i'm going go and try to defend with those guys i will need cover from midfield. And so naturally. I will be sucked to defend wide. You want to defend gab. You wanted up to twenty five minutes. Why why why are you. Why are you driving at so is it. Perhaps a personnel issue. If we had a fully fit elder viral didn't there would it be different no because we saw against wars against palace against a lose of other teams. Would i just think that's what they do. And i think he works for a time. But i don't think he's working anymore or at least you take too much is too risky and again. I don't understand why when you have players like sawn and kane. And i mean she so-called blades wings and oberg but lamilla came on. And you've got other players like that why i just i just don't get it but but maybe in the end there will be champions all proven wrong again. Just i find it so frustrating. And i'm not even as post on. Oh i play by finding sophistry watching them when they can be good for twenty five minutes and they should keep playing like this and then changed. I think at this stage of his career. It's very easy to lampoon marino. And i wonder if there's something here if there's a piece of the picture that we're not seeing and i think specifically in the season i think there might be players off form or whether issues they as possible. He simply made an incorrect decision. But i also wonder if there isn't something else going on That we might find out later on. You know prompts some of these performances on the players something with the with the fitness levels. Perhaps or or or it's not rational even within the marinas. fear right. he's he's not he's not a caricature of himself. He's he's very well spurs. I think are better team this year. There and i think he's done a very good job but you're right. I this this stint is really difficult. And even i'll tell you what you score. They want nil. It's still not a good performance but it's not a good performance of the game we say. Do we went over the by the defeat likud for example because it was the last minute was the head of a feminine but we worried about the second half against palace where they were joists. Stop playing yeah and so again. We saw at home this time because before it was on your way but at home against because we said this game out. No problem the adjust. I go back to this. These aren't players. Who are trained. I think just in terms of characteristics. And what they're used to before to be comfortable defending the this isn't baluchi. Leans you have the ball for an hour. I know ever shoot on goal right. These are players if you look at evanston scientists coming through the ranks at i asked other viral. Funnily enough another former. I xe guy Or yet we've covered I don't think it works in that. Says when i ask you about. I think he's taught highest earner actually Kirk bail despite the fact. That ramadan salary i mean he comes off the bench against marine. Is he fit is he. Not you've got the wealth connections. Actually people be making a bigger deal of this. I mean yes and no. There's a reason why it doesn't play in. The league is because a little white or even against marine for them. Yeah yeah but they must be reason why marino doesn't rely on him those kinds of games even for the last ten or fifteen minutes once fulham of schools and then southern the as we saw again against and we saw against palestinian go. No we're gonna drop points. Let's attack again and then attack again. And they usually create chances which they've done ab soon believable. And maybe you could be useful for you there. But if he doesn't even think is an option there. I would have thought that there would be some situations where you would play bail and king together upfront. You can still play song and berg. I realized you know. Do the outpatient bail right now. I don't think you can ask them to play una marino team to play on the wing. I do do the do yellow round defensive work. He's not going to work like he can't maybe not but why can't he play up front with cain. Do you think that when the decided to go and sign him. The the the idea was that he would play domestic cups and europe league. I'll do you think the marine youth. Okay it would be a good option. But since dan marino training during games and realize okay now i can't. I can't trust him. In the word. I would lean towards that you know i. I think there was a combination of will. Maybe the stadium will reopen and gareth. Bale will be a draw and whatever it's a lower risk gamble you know if we like him and he does well and he's happy then maybe we can think about signing him renegotiating his deal whatever i think they viewed it that way but then obviously you know the grounds still shot. I don't think they'll they. May well not reopen this year's you not gonna. He's not going to move the needle. The think most likely spurs with a sold out anyway their new ground even without even so there would have been a footballing element to it and seeing him up close for for for four five months. You know with injuries ever. I think you have to look around. How much is it costing me. And what am i getting. Out of them I think that's that's a difficult part To to really go and judge thanks. Man played olympique marseille into tofa. Champion is basically the community. Shield fridge supercop anyway The big news is pushing tino won his first trophy. Not just price your man but the first trophy ever as a manager but andre villas boas says the best team lost so to help us sort this out. let's go. We've got joined by franklin leboeuf. Let's see what he thinks. Frank is ab right of not only fair to say the very city diesel to win that game. Even if it wasn't the biggest game into the game they seen in fulham them at the same was watching. Say an president. Obama and i think he said he wanted to be was wrong was too slow too fast. But it wasn't the same level of free more either. The difference between the english the french football but now of course no deserved to play. Even if i don't recognize version from the us in the bus. I think he's not the same person. Maybe it's more difficult than to win against any League one team. This season the main but i think they did drop a demo for quantities and maybe the breakers to realize that they have to work better than that if they wanna be like the they used to be. Maybe a contender for the chimpanzee butts die game. They won eight. Gb is wrong. Because i think i could have one like maybe four one five one. We'll get back to that point because it's really one about men's level versus a reason us perhaps later in our in our podcast only segment. But jules i'm assuming we have frank that avb's wrong you're going to disrespect avb. No but you know what was was disappointing is that this is silly. Why said was silly. However this is the best motto performance we've seen against. Psg savvy to cover his third game against psg even in the wind in september. They didn't play as well as it did last night and then he's got battered for nearly got it completely wrong. So why would you come up with something. That's silly when you could actually say. Do you know what we were close. We were not that far and we actually played well. They deserve to win and they still did better than us. But we're getting there. That's what said and two of one hundred really good game. And that's what i said but don't come and something stupid like turn it back to star power here. The glitter here name. I starting on the bench. I don't know if it was maple because holidays and his five day party but anyway he comes on there. I think there was some trepidation here. Because the last time he played marseille but obviously ended in investigations. Cups with his nemesis otto. Frank i thought name was was disciplined and good at least during the game afterwards. He did some rolling. But what did you. What did you think of. It was a good comeback. Do in we knew that. We go and provocative and he did very well and getting to the trick you know making fouls getting a yellow card. Maybe he's the red one on the on the freaky that Nemov guts very close to the senior bucks. Nothing to say about name next to provo. East's maybe where he's the best when he doesn't get john when he doesn't get any gen- story e when he's called the goal we know that he was a was a viral but he to do and and we are pleased. You know when you play that way when he when he goes and tried to take on the players when he when he tries to score goals so nothing much to say about him. I think it was good for him to stay on the bench and start. Maybe just safety fifteen minutes to just get back into the game in these sisters fitness back. I love drills talking to frank about this. Because i we've mentioned before but just to remind people. Frank is obviously world cup-winning defender so he he's going to name on from the from the perspective of a defender words a guy who likes to provoke. Vote me i'll but equally not know this. Frank was a number ten early career and if it wasn't for a certain davidge at his club he might have never played in central defence. I can see both sides Quickly dropped us. Your your take on name is come back. I thought the most interesting was the missed. The first two games of pacino. We're we're not show where he would play on the porch and he played on the left inside. Variety state has a number ten centrally which is new position. We've put schettino. And i thought that was interesting. He looked fit. He was really good when he came on. Scored the golden. Trolling was always going to come. Guess what he and navarro meet again february the seventh because that's the the return game in resigned fixture in the league this time at the room so that would be interesting after the game. We touched upon the trolling neymar. Leto and social media gives a background. Just tell us a story and do you think it adds something you can take. Anything away just entertainment. Just name could not help himself and you knew you knew it was coming. You would just wondering when there was a little story on instagram working pets when psg lost a champions league final pirates reminded everyone. The mahat won the champions league before and pg not paid by the way who's on the ever worn. He's a local domestic cup in the lower. In your way you came from before. So i'm not sure on their. She can talk about winning trophies and final play for west ham and west time on the world. Cup But he was a pirate first and then obviously the one for our came and little celebration as well. They did after his goal and alvarado to be fair to him. Go back in and and also told him back in french. What was named maldin in portuguese. And like you said. They meeting again which which economy. Well the third time. Run because we as you said the first time. I say this trolling right. Like is it a. Ps cheating french. Because oh no no no no. Because now i'm married in in the premier league. We don't see this trolling via social media between top stars. Maybe maybe they're more controlled. Maybe just more boring or whatever in laliga. We had a little bit in years past. Was you happy consecutive. But those are two guys who've been you know that they've they've been frenemies their entire life. I kind of feels like it's kinda gone away in italy we don't we don't see it in the bundesliga. No the funny guys humor. Funny guys are the people who run the club accounts. I think it adds the ww to to everything. Is you know. I'm a big wrestling. Fan frank. You've been playing. What do you make of this. Is this a distraction. Is it something. You're playing with fire when you do this. Yeah you do play with fire especially name. All of our dozen reese too much. I've always the guy was gonna try trite kicking. You neymar on the on the game. The thing is we d kids the main concern for me. Maybe new england don't talk. I'm always let's say scared. A more respect. Somebody who doesn't respond to me. Because i don't know what i mean. I think he wanted to mock enviro. That's ma wanna do you can do it and that's really all. I wouldn't have been ivo respond to to name all. I would have waited the denise key to showing my respect. That's that's what it is that we don't see that england neglected against terry both people in on the field. Roy keane i play with people. You denise wise vinnie jones. they don't talk they don't talk. Do you find their response. Comes when their boot ends up in your finger. Basically yeah chose. I want to talk about mario coty. Because obviously he's back on the scoresheet. How important is it that there's a center forward with all my love for moist can of course and is this. Is this the missing piece of the puzzle does does he. Does his presence free up and bought bay to do more things or because this was the criticism we got it before. Is that the risk that you just have a guy hanging around the six yard box doing nothing. The ball comes to when that was not the case. He had been one of the criticism before but not certainly not in the game against marseille where he was very involved even in the liquor play in the bid the play. He had a really good first half hit the bar. Scored the goal. Of course helsinki at five short three on targets then the penalty in the second half but i thought he looked fitter. He's movement was good. I think maybe the fact that puts you to arrive and sony you. Could you imagine the relationship that those two can have kuby pretty special and from why we still pushing noah's been talking a lot with with cardi and the whole dressing room. Rose certainly with the cardi. I think you could. You could see emerge improving carpet and the one we had in twenty twenty which before the pandemic wasn't good after the pandemic lost his place in the team even in the final eight. When caveney was in there he was playing. So i think i think days twenty twenty was bad and twenty twenty one already. Newcomers better just two games in for ecomog frank. Kennedy is one of the most eccentric people in world football. I mean when we talk about weird you know personally you know like wa. What about him go everything out. From the fact that every inch of his body has zinc on into the pictures going back to the to the maxi situation and vonda to to calling out the. Who's gonna fight all of them. He's an unusual. I categorize is a spice of life. And look i'm frankly not surprised. Frank that maybe is going to have a better handle on him than thomas to hold who is also eccentric and his own way a bit teutonic. But what's your take on economy is he. Did you degree that. He can be the missing piece of the puzzle here. Yes definitely different than we can see. All the quantity that keen house competing to cardi's player like teresa. Give for example. You know the hunter of boston. A sixteen yard wards where. He's going to get it and if he's very focused on these on his food goal when he knows what to do. When i guess when you play against marseille where it was every time in a very good position to score goes to make an unforgiving us this. I'm really keen on when he's really one hundred percent into football as you said you know outside of football is crazy and and make some some. Some kind study. Shouldn't do and put him outside of the foodball when he's on the field so when it's like that i like him and he's showed it yesterday he's the type of guy that you need and gino. Latching person is maybe the first person to another version which wasn't the case for to latin in milan as well and many of us didn't understand him either What what ask you know you. Frank talk about my boy. Michael dougherty who has been playing in a new position under under patina. It's something that they tried before. Briefly was was the italian national team. I don't know he's effectively. Playing further up the pitch playing as an attacking midfielder almost in the whole is. Does this make sense to you. How do you see it. It makes sense to me that is able twenty two to to to serve his teammates. Giving brian can do verity of so can do is iggy as excellencies in his face when he gives them onto somebody else. The thing is deployed is teammates. Right now have to look for him to give him the ball where they should be of use to see him every time they have the ball. That's the thing of a number ten a leader of a of a of a team and so far they don't find easily where as a number six when he has the football game in front of him he sees your into to be fun now is not hiding but between the lines to be in the best solution in order for the for his teammates to give the. That's the main concern about is new position about verity because i see less a theme than before and so important in a in the middle of the parts very man that they have to work that was to keep on the positioning variety as a number ten. Jews there is one of the toughest things to do. I think you know we often say oh. We played between the lines space between the lines. But in addition to what you do when you have the ball. I think primarily an excellent point because the way you receive the ball when you play in that role is completely different. It's gonna be usually on the half turn to go or or back to golden. Then you've got to go to turn so how'd you. How'd you learn that while running while continuing to play. Is this something that this is an individual having to add something repertoire and change and change to be at twenty eight which is not easy and especially when you don't really have time to work it on a training because you don't really train you so much and i think obviously the higher the higher you play on the page the more credits. If you if you if you played in your thirty yards you can easily get the board. There's less pressure than if you play so high. And you've got the opposition teams to central midfielders plus the produce the buck four behind and all of that so you will have to did with and learn how to find the right position. Pollution his body right but also you will have to adapt himself to the movement of other place in his area because as we saw last night. Football and a inside stars as this over right-winger comes inside the law and variety. Con- stay close to remind what was before he was other players around variety adopting themselves to variety because he was the main man there. Now be different frame so old is new. I think he's intelligent and talented enough to make it. Though as you mentioned the played like imbaba neymar who rightly are accustomed to kind of following their instincts on the pitch and having others defer to him. I want to take it back frank. Something you ask for a certain race before about this this is version of says your man versus the one of two or three years ago and whether it's a case of it's a much tighter race in leon this year whether it's a case of of marseille and leeann improving Or whether it's a case of senator man going backwards perhaps as a result of some of the financial fair play restrictions. And the can't spend the way they did in the past. My point of view goes for top teams in europe. Where the sentence. Dixon sorry doesn't work for any team right now. We see liverpool. We so much associes getting better the having a very difficult to start we of bus bacelona. We see you struggling also in gaucho and we see very also and i think he's a all teams in the top level dropped. Dramatically is it because of the pandemic is it because of the perversion. Maybe the time of the off you know between the final aids and the new season certainly i think he is what it is but it's also maybe some players and some generations to be changed buying by by the coach the club's those names but it's not differently for me that the other are getting better. It's really become up drops dictate physically physically especially and maybe technically we can see the bustle. Nice looking for a new way of flame braces. I'm here. We just talked about it. Trying to find another way to play with verity has a number ten even if they are paying more. Andy maya so. I don't know what's going on with us clubs but you have to find solutions for especially cherries. Berries strugging lost many games during the season. I doubt that they're going to be champion of france The end of the season because they still better than the others ben this framing and the after wonder why they do that. And how come they drop like maybe two or three live from a from the best seasons. I think i think there's there's a few reasons one is that other can also improve and we saw that one coup with an amazing team and won that title to the only title. Psu haven't warned in the last ten years Ten years this year by the way his career really took off after that canal at one for another time. That's one of the mysteries football and listening. So that's the first thing and gonna have certainly improved and they looking really good marseille. You have improved for show leila improve improve. Because frank seems to suggest that maybe it's not so much that they've improved. No i think. I think you're not better than last year mafia better than last year. Better than this year Even better here. I don't think we're not could compete for the title. Sunni the other scan by the way jet count myself. Lee saying leila better than last year despite losing men and gabrielle that that's and despite the ownership changing and everything and really says a lot about that team sock. It does big with me and franca big funds of gun t and he's work anyway. So so that's the first thing others can improve others improved. Then you right by. You said that we could not do the spending that they want they had done before and three franchi's rights as well when there's no preparation when you've had players with covid almost half of your team when you haven't been able to play you strongest eleven at all because you've always had injuries or illnesses and these and you change managers compared to others who may have had more stability then you end up with this where they still favorite to win it and you could easily see them winning birds. They're not as lee wise as they have been even last year or the year before i do wonder just how and i'm gonna give you a story i did. I think you should write for a website. Because there's a parallel universe where power senator man. Obviously have this tremendous youth academy yet make a whole range of different decisions with many of those young players that they basically had to sell off to meet for lack of high well. What if they hadn't done that. What if they'd kept in couscous. And whatever would we be a completely different situation right now. I got ta. It's one of those sort of alternate reality. Honesty's go back. Replay the five years with the benefit of hindsight. See where we frank. Thank you so much. Thank you always a pleasure g. Sorry how about some quick hits instead. Let's go gas huge game coming up for sunday matches united georgia. How do you assess where they are right now and also. What do you make of cops comments. Last week pointing out that united had more penalties in two years than liverpool hadn't five and a half years his mind game games. I love is any strew and is true. However if you just the season. They've had the same amount of penalty so i don't think that gives you an angel or anything like this but liverpool. The last three games have been in the league. I've been fairly disappointed as we know that feta southampton draws the one with newcastle. Especially the one with west brom as well. I guess i there was the one with fulham before we go after the win against pilots when they won't seven near and destroy them that the boss was and but now the dynamic has changed literally so shooter game maybe maybe that's the best that they could up and for them. They look tired. But i think also you're right. It's a good situation. You can have a chance to go back and you've had you will have had what like nine ten days to rest and penalties concerned pleasant to mind games that much united how hallway but my boy paul pogba scores the world kind of because there's a little deflection on but still to barely and take united to the top of the league. Gob column about this. There was a deflection jewels. But it's still. It was wonderful coordination. Beautiful yeah look i. I don't think it's necessarily relevant that we can. We look at this and say while they probably won't win the league anyway and sitting live report better sides. I think the are better sides. I don't think the win the league. It's the first time they're top of the league in years in medium my call him. Was you know i'm not. We'll find out if this was the right decision. But i think it was interesting and corporations to do this all the time right after bringing in big proven brand name managers who are going to rock the vote and we're going to be disruptors to use a venture capital where they went for the company man and it's not an insult janowski off called them now. They're further along in terms of results. Anyway it's up to social to build on this but it does give them that little bit of capital that i think is a more room to maneuver. No messy but eventually overcome it out in the spanish supercup. Final final four on penalties jewels. What did you make of it. Well we talked about and saying the better side and lost again which was not true. However you could set up for that and i think you'd be right because i thought they were the better side without avid silva's well without w teigen was by far and i mean by far the best player on the page in the basketball team and when you keep. He's the best player by five. Never good thing but without messy. Maybe that was to be expected. This is a team that still so dependent on him and without him. I think the luca lost time to digging did the messy impression in this game. By the way how did franken to that twisting his body like a weird much the way and headed the board. I was pretty good staying in spain. That be severe tune in one of the games in hand the heart to play on tuesday night to extend the lead at the top of lower league table to four points and the still have two games in hand gap. How big was because as we've been saying wayne good form. I think it's huge. Tell you what this is yet. Let the jekyll and hyde right. This was old school at lady that we saw here korea coming up big for them. This was this was super charl. One point oh and that's fine and it's the way you wanna play against it'll team And tv of course coming off that that win over the weekend against russell's he died with a nursery heidrick. I thought this is another team. That you've knocked knocked off top sixteen where you could have lost points to. It's big it's big. And i think they can go ahead and do this and how good is you. Couldn't they never severe god. July love you so much. Get excited about the french guy. Much barn unit won't be winning the treble this season in fact if you count what happened wednesday night as a defeat. They've lost more games in the first thirteen days of january than they have. In the entire. Five days of twenty twenty. They gave up an injury-time equaliser to second division holstein kiel and then lose on penalties. Can we start with his best team in the world. Nonsense necessitate serious issues right now are right now. The best team in the world is nowhere near the team. They were when they won the champions league when they were walking on on everybody else and flick played a really strong team less nothing. He played the kids because he was a singer. Division team in killing the cup. No this was really strong team and live on the was on the bench. Berries taught yukos hernandez wallner noise. That's five research plus me coming. Come on strong and you know what's disappointing. I don't know why doesn't take a penalty in the shootout. I mean he said well caputo. He's far more dependent on the mark. Rocca pollute bless. Him missed it. And cousy team. That defeated mark rockers. More technically skilled inter taken to extra time by fiorentina in the room has to come off the bench to get it don and and scored the winner gob. How looking ahead of their clash with you this weekend. We'll no doubt to a point out that they're going to be more tired though you've at the time to Look what was interesting to me about this game. He played christian erickson deeper in a d playmaking role in the bras role yet. I'm okay with me you know. I wonder if this means first of all he can play that role. He's done similar roles in the past but second. I wonder if it means that. Maybe he's having a rethink. Oh look actually impossible. Maybe it's impossible to sell this guy. Because he makes way too much money. Maybe i keep him. And maybe he young veterans for me. We reinvented why not. Why not mattress any brighton. One neil is pep sticks to the striker. The system and sterling misses a late penalty third and a game in hand expecting a bit more little bit half to say a bit more urgency at times. But there were comfortable because brighton came to defend. Clearly what we'd like. Six central defenders antibiotics. Don't think i've ever seen this before. And i know they were not old playing center by no six thousand two bucks. I don't think he was expecting that from potter and it again. There's also certainly wasn't expecting him to leave out. You know mopane and gross and and some of these other guys know but a job again. Another game whether they don't concede by father. What best defense in the league and still looking really strong and marching on events is also need extra time to win that game against genoa and they also have to bring ronaldo off the bench. God what do what do we read into this into. This event is could care less about the corporate played. All these guys you know when you start seeing shirt numbers of fifty sixty eight. Wesley drag with seeing hawks. Fire the the tunisia but starts fine. They move on they move forward. They got the kids some some playing time and they're going to be better arrested now. How about some love for team. Everton be wolves and her joint. Third despite playing sits in homage rodriguez this has to be slowest. I love to in history pat on the most technically gifted but come on my son was like you've caller wanted to take the mickey of foam benign. Genius can do better than you can have cigarettes in anaheim in that we have out dominant cover living dos gear injured sink toasted not very good. That's why maybe it was not hamas. Maybe james rodriguez as a jamie redknapp called the sky sports. I don't know. I don't know who the pri- was james. Rodriguez bay goodwin win for them. As we say they're doing a great job there suddenly brahima vich returns to the starting lineup. Ba- t need penalties and tataru solely to be the hero to be torino and move onto the next one of the Yeah go penalties. But hey they move forward and i think the big thing here is that slot unplayed midfield again. Turn it if if collude turns out to be as good as as some people think is So all good there. The sun reports that newness santa was very close to taking the arsenal job before they turned to Tater instead would this has been made sense. And what if this mistake or they'll show and something. Yeah something that somebody not hayme. Obviously somebody in the men mendes owes fear. Some kind of totally invented a. Yeah really wanna hand the club to those people rather than the nice people rang again. Awesome happy with mika tiny. Where so. I don't think they would have any regrets. Even if that was true the investigation into suarez and you went to general manager. Fabio patchy continues gob. You know of him trying to get a passport and during the exam and all of that is the club really in trouble and surely be in trouble again. They keep looking into this again for those. Who weren't paying attention was available. They had reached a deal to sign him but he had to get his passport. Because there's a limit on the number weirdly. He's been in spain for ten years. The guy still doesn't have any you passport To do that he. Of course it. Taken italian test as it turned out. The test was pretty much rigged and gave. The tests are in serious trouble. The question is how much did fabio productivity Just general manager have to do with this We know he called in some favors. He call the government minister who is a childhood friend of his. But the point you are making by the time that he went to take his test. We had already gone for murata instead. So we're out of this at this point. If you did do something was supposed to do this is all unle- suarez which is reportedly on the verge of going back to eintracht frankfurt where he'll be will replace a legendary bustos onto a brooch choose. Does this mean that row madrid might bring in another body. Upfront this january. I don't think so. I think they'll have my my in your does and bensimon i think it'd be happy with that But you need to replace him in the yovich role and the role of the guy the road who's never ever since it. I can do that. And then i guess you put him on the market. He will play regularly. We do for you and he stake will hopefully you and maybe you set him or at least if he comes back he comes back full of confidence. If he's a good second half of the season you know it could be a win win all by loose news. I guess you. Social distancing on goal celebrations is now apparently a thing in the primarily with some suggesting that players should do more to avoid spreading the virus so soon just just before you answer swallow understanding. Well you should not be allowed to celebrate with your own teammates who are in your bubble every right. Yes and who you train with. Every i don't know where this story has come from but it's become a big thing. We built live in london. We read the english media. I talked about last night. I don't know why all of a sudden it's an issue when you know. Maybe it's because there's a. There's a more virulent strain of the virus i don't know but it just seems very very odd to me when these people are being tested continuously The other thing that's odd to me is in highlighting this on there. They're all praising hurricane because they showed his goal celebration where rather than going in hugging people he just y and high five them right and i'm thinking okay. World told that we need to wash your hands constantly right if this really is such a big issue surely people touching touching another dudes hands when hands are. The most likely thing is like i. I don't know. I i take a step back to the science. I harry kane for for trying to do something about it. I think we should wait until we have actually lived with vice and not play like pretend epidemiologists is and working out at athletico. Madrid reports say could be joining von loan. Just a better option. I presume them bringing back to arsenal jewel. Especially now that. Thomas fit again right the best space. The best option is he plays wherever that is. I asked him if you want to bring him back. But there's no point bringing back if he's on the bench and is your fourth or fifth choice in midfield and you're going to play like five minutes there and two many staying. The curb party stays fit because otherwise you're back to you and now many every week. Check out here but we of course then bring him back again bring him back if he plays otherwise may as well blame somewhere summarize where he would play get get older minutes and etc took. Lozano comes a big for napoli in the is. They've three to gab. Could twos not really secret weapon but sita's secret weapon could be easy certainly playing a lot better this year I remember again mayor. Semen are really good players. They're out it was only the club cup. It helps his confidence. And what's interesting is until oh seaman returns. Napoli are completely different. Sides if lozano plays up front or if baton plays up front right because one guy has got speed and run behind the other guy is basically just a big bill who holds the ball. Scores goals worked hard. So i i really like. I know everybody laughs. Napoli can still be the title hunt. I really liked the squad. I think they're really really good. At and lasagnas a part of that team full suit mensa has joined by elite kuzin. And of course my friend. Peter boss jaws could this kickstart his career given that united went to all the trouble of bringing him back and then they don't play and they certainly and you would think that by leverkusen. Investing on him is to play him to develop him and the crazy. The talent is there. And i think he's talented so good for him. He had to go because there was no point staying. If you're not playing you're still young enough to other to other gooky ahead of him. You so paul. Pogba and eric by saying goodbye to him which was quite emotional. Because i think that we're all very close And good luck to him in germany. Much the city of santa partnership agreement with dr in in bolivia the biggest club in bolivia. God there's another angle to the city. Group obviously have plenty of traps everywhere twat by the way in france a few weeks ago as well Yeah the there's a different. He's other clubs. They have stayed right that we know about new york city of c. and melbourne yokohama. Here it's just a partnership agreement. The reason it's interesting is okay. Cynics are gonna go out and say oh look city are going to do that. Thing where they sell them their intellectual property for a billion zillion. I don't think it's that. I think the question mark would raise for me and i'm hoping mls look into. This is the guy who owns bulevar The president The guy name marcelo clarity pronuncia correctly. Who dude. Where's many many hats because he's also the owner of inter miami and if all of a sudden he's got a commercial partnership agreement with manchester city in his part of horton with with city. Football group city football group owner and other team. Now molest i to me. This seems like a pretty evident conflict of interest in again before the city fans. Get angry. me it's not. It's not cities business. Not city salt by this guy has a swinger in many different parts. He also happens to be the chief operating officer. I think of of softbank. who. Of course we're the ones who are going to put twenty billion or whatever the crazy figure was to have the club world cup and whatever and who are they also own reword musashi all stuff i mean i don't know i think the stories kind of flown under the radar and again city fans. Nothing to do with you but i do wonder from anomalous perspective. I shouldn't there be rules about. This may be a conflict of interest. The somewhere just a little just a little. Emory has revealed that he didn't want to sign. Nicholas wanted wilfried zaha instead. Now things have turned out differently for him. I don't know maybe maybe but it's true. Even spoke on the phone zaha when i explain to him how he wanted to play him and all of that maybe would have been different. I don't know different pro human. Know this it's not. It's not the same and he's also would have cost the same money and he's like five years older he's five years old. You could say that he knew the league though what we did yes so i. I really don't see that. I don't think you should see transfer. This is always easy within all. We should have signed him. But we should have should have done this. And i say this. With a maximum love for emory. Who's doing a fine job again. Yeah and of course. It'd be. Larry al champions league places and here breeze voice bizarre which killed dell whatever guy the former bustle not president and and the How'd you say presidential candidate candidate candidate. John porter claimed that the club had the chance to rinaldo where back in two thousand and three but he has no regret. I mean god one is he lying and to how could we have been to mention team so surely he regrets you anyway if he's true. I three if you're ready for president. Is that really something you want to say like. Oh yeah we're twenty years ago. One of the greatest and on top of that. I have no regret about it john doe. Mse together in a bar shirt for twenty years. And i don't regret signed me. Let obviously this is fantasy football. I made this point before right. We've never had to legitimate one hundred percent goat candidates greatest player of all time candidates at this level playing together as teammates on a club. So don't you. Before these people retired they would have to take you. Pay cuts would have to be somewhere i may. I'm hoping with no disrespect. I'm hoping it's not an mls hoping it's not you know in in the gulf somewhere. I'm hoping it's for a cool team will be really cool if it happened like you know if i hear i'll give you one. What if they decide final year before they retire. Okay six months together right newell's and then six months at no not more whatever wants to go home and they're not okay high it from whatever that would be cool but hey we're in fantasy but yeah fuck that if you wanted my vote and vote in the russian presidential actions. You just lost it by saying this. This is a silly thing to say. Yeah right. that's all we got time for. But jules eight is top of the table. Time in the premier league this weekend liverpool and united juventus against injured. I think we should come back on monday. News on joe then love the game. Love your neighbor.

Gab and Juls: Will 2021 be Pep Guardiola's year?

"The gab he's jewels. It's a sunny thursday in west london except for one little region above the gills had a little bit like pig pen from from peanuts right to one down at home from leg. Secondly there you go. Of course we'll be getting into City and your man. We'll be getting to byron and if buying nautilus semifinal round madrid and chelsea. Well we'll be going over many of the stories around europe but of course we're going to start at the parc province. Where a parolee. As for some stupid reason my sports broadcasters keep calling them wonder lot a looked like it wasn't just one up but it looked to me like city weren't creating and imbaba niemeier especially were terrifying mother defense in the first half and then it'll flips the worked for an hour really well because even just before the debrecen goal there was that big chance for mbappe variety and the crossed. I think you've variety instead of being size six or seven weeks. Go small feet. If he's a size nine like you. Size i stand. I think he's caused is caused cross and converted into a goal after the hour. Though i think physically dipped the it was a lot of effort to to keep their shape to defend the way. They did for an hour to attack the way they did to keep. The ball is tearing to keep the ball against the city team. Press so well especially after the the half hour really really. I think go more aggressive. Press better and i think physically trying to go down a little bit and against t physically your best. There will come back and get control of the game. And that's what happened for the last half hour shameful. Psg city force them to make mistakes. Played much better for the last for the second half and the last half hour. I think that's that is a bit of a theme of where we are late in the season where You know somebody said. Even a month ago we would have seen a better performance for ninety minutes out of these two teams and say fatigue. Too many games. Whatever i do think. It is a factor. It is the fact that it adds up now. Some people be like oh players are tired and fatigued and fitness. Make mistakes and that makes it more exciting yet. But i wanna see these teams beat each other up when they're not making mistakes because they're good. Obviously there were a number of mistakes both of mine. Cities goals were the result of of craven areas Let's quickly go through the goal. And in fact i would argue martinez says goal as well. Yeah was wonderful is marketing as we dylan mocking makino. Swindling can mark one of the best head of the pulling the wool. Stones was on as well i. It is interesting because just just just doing that because we had this idea in the past that because city play football and pass a move and whatever that somehow they were shaky on set pieces but i think the show that they really improved on pieces. Defensively so to me seemed really odd. I do think the deliveries were really really good for power man. Which think makes it a lot easier but then there was also the this chance again. Not the guy you want heading the ball necessarily but then cities two goals to do you blame caseload or defenders. It was a big debate yesterday in france. I think he's fall to live. And i know it's a difficult one because he expect someone to get in touch on. That cross is ease across goes in but for me on his his his too passive. He's not reactive enough and for me one is for him. It is a bit in his nature. He is a tremendous goalkeeper but he relies so much on his athleticism on his shots. Dopey shopping his reflexes. He just feels more comfortable. They're going out. And i thought somebody who's going to get a touch kayla. Thought somebody who's going to stay where you are right. I guess so. I guess the second one level. I'm sorry and we talked about wars. And central ronaldo and you've against boto bet on. I'm sorry you can't take. I don't know if if he's on purpose because the ball was come in. You know they get your buddy on the line get double you and then at least. You don't concede that goal is a crazy go to considering the semi final of the champions league. What was odd to me about. First of all i mean she puts it. He's threads the needle i know. It's not one of those because they do jump and obviously the little hole opens but it is a really really small hole and the ball shoots through their. I know about freekick. He's really freaky. This freaky that should never go in. At any level sunday league football cater to because he soon the wall was going to deal with it. Yes so you don't blame this for kedah. But this one is for penn and perez. Who don't stay close to each other close to each other in the wall. Know who just create a little hole even if he's just little enough for the boat to go through is unacceptable. You are taught. I think generally in the wall to jump to stay touch type to demand next year because we don't usually you even hold each other rounds maybe france. But that's what you should do this or or even as we often see people turn as the ball comes in which obviously frowned upon. But there is a way to do that. Where you increase your volume and you can do it without allowing gaps to appear What other point. A i wanna hit which i loved about this which to me. I kinda define the game right here. We are win. This thing goes after a tackle. Right and an pep was on the sideline who i hasten to add is italian playing for a french team yet goes to a guy who's catalan. Playing for english team can go. The french team owned by qatar. And the the english team Abu dhabi and he shouts at him in spanish. You know what the hell are you looking at right. I just i just love and you know. I just love the blow here. I am watching korean tv at my house. I just love. I just love the whole sort of global nature of this moment. And by the way i would. This was the joke that people made middle but it is true. Obviously pep guardiola speaks excellent italian having a good interview and which joe close that peop- speaks much better talion. Then so maybe. That's why the spoke to him. Maybe pep probably speaks french to do. I will get his. I don't wanna say pakistan's your man dominated the first-half because dominate is a big word But i felt like they were never. We never really threatened seriously in the first half just to food just before the break. That's i that was at the very and they had an obviously the scored the goal. There was a chance Looks like they really held the pitch very very well in the first half and so inevitable question to peppers. Who what did you do to change it. And he explained is on speaking on sky italia but he said look we we were. We weren't aggressive enough off the ball We were little too preoccupied About our position on the pitch. And i am the threat of the counter. And you so. We needed to go and kind of engage them. Further up on unforced errors. I didn't win the ball and make them chase us. Yeah there's a few that was really interesting. He said that they were not themselves. In the first half that it didn't with freedom and he also said this was the first semifinal of love those players in that team. And i think he said he said that the the there was the feeling that they want to make mistakes. Maybe be too cautious. Thought they were. And that's what was so was so good. So impressive in the first half was well in the second half when they got more aggressive than they got their rhythm back a bit more played with more intensity and because they saw fit. I mean they're so so fit fit physically. That's why that's why they control the second half much better than the pse struggled to get the ball back from out from the back like they did in the first hour really of fifty five minutes and then and then if you don't get divorced to mbappe and neymar variety then. There's nothing i can do this. What an really disappeared in second. You make a point about about the fitness there and you know people was used as an excuse but empire senator man. You have a lot of players who have had injuries who've come back and also think mentally you are in a title race. I think that takes a lot out of you versus manchester city. Who it's not. it's a credit him. They basically won the league in february If not before that. So i think i would agree that that is a big big issue by the way one thing that even people who don't like pat. I have to concede that he says stuff like that he talks. He gets football answers. She doesn't come up with nonsense about your heart to give kick up the backside to motivate them in the second half and whatever lake he actually gives footballing answers to to football because it took was a law by they need and benign bring coverage is on a time because look a. There's no one in the bug that really there blah blah blah. The the problem was not the first number nine number nine in the first half. The problem was that the their price was not working is as simple as that and if cities breath if you can play through the city press and find the variety higher up the beach on name of demaria then there will be on the back for which the hates you becoming them. Your full bikes will course then problem which to hate again. And that's what was so good as soon as their price and coverages he's gonna change your press. He will press was by vendors silva is probably more and better than bridges. The thing is i. Think a person's different i think she's just has a higher intensity has a higher intensity surely for as longest benedetta donna andrews like very jerusalem said benny i know i think there's more about stamina and his fiftieth suppressing ron. We'll probably be better than Juices pushing around. But if you bring introduce on at halftime when he's when he's fresh. I think i mean. I think there is some credence to that. But you didn't. I don't think you need to end the proof was that now you're bringing him on and they won't so coach. I think he knows what he's doing. I mean i think he was more about getting bernardo and the brain higher pundit pitch more aggressive and everybody the whole blog behind the same and it doesn't matter if you leave love spacing behind because you don't let the players being able to hit the ball to mbappe behind and in bad become really disciplined in second as well. Yeah i get up in a minute. I think there was also probably an element from pap of saying. This is a to counter. Were one no down. If i leave it on the pitch then we can also keep the ball. Yeah i make them chase us and even if we don't score one know defeat isn't great but i can live with that and we can. We can stuff. These is back at the. I got plays into it too. I mean i think you know. We often think of attacking managers and whatever and being proactive. But i think people are also very strategic in the way they think You brought up in bombay. I saw in the first half. He didn't get shots perhaps the way he would have liked to but it was obvious he conditioned here name. I conditioned the way the way city played. Yeah the threat that he represented the it was a big. It was such a big game for him because because of what happened in two thousand seventeen when he was his first arts in the in the championship avoids career. Eighteen and two months with monaco. Adhd hide against he them apart home away away and home because with all the talk about him being the next already the big thing human holland's the move on the move the extension or the extension. The club off after him after him. And because it's a semi final of the champions. He wanted to be the star. He no shots no. I'm not even talking on targets. He had no shot for stop which never happened to him. In the champions league. Before which i think is credited to the web and city organized themselves in the second half especially because in the first half as you said he was a threat but it was it was just very disappointing and i don't know if he if he tried to overplay because he wanted to be so decisive game like this so he forced himself a bit too much. There was a couple of. You should have taken a shot. He's one one as lethal as they usually are. And i think ruben diaz defended defendant really really well on him and he said i think he's a real shame is a good point about ruben diaz. I mean we whenever we talk about. Who should player this season. Might be in say. There's so many candidates so we struggled but you could make a very strong case for the impact. The ruben diaz has had this year you know how many games he's played for city or forty-five nominee lost. No three. The dude lost three games out of forty five in competition this season. It's just it's just incredible. Do win ratio is just for someone who's just arrived who's twenty-three who never moved out of portugal before for line or you'd never took a plane before we probably one hundred somewhere i spent and yet right. He played for probably played in europe. You may be as when i give you that but the points stand of okay. You're going to somewhere completely new for to you or the language before which is a big plus. I just think is incredible One thing that always strikes me. I made this point before about passenger man versus Versus manchester city. Manchester city art collective. We always go on about all the money that was spent and look at one of the few teams is wage. Bill went up and they have phenomenal players. But when you compare these two teams and ask myself. Who is the most talented individual on the pitch. By far i would have name on it. Number one in imbaba number two or the other way round pick and then with all due respect i would probably say debrecen. Yeah right and then probably the next list the next five or six would would all be city players. Right yeah i i. I think it's interesting because obviously a team game. It's a collective game. We have managers who generally exist to make it. More of a collective game might put schettino assistant manager. Pepys obviously manager as well i. I'm just asking anybody struggle to the individual versus system. And how hiving name out in bopping carrying can just terrify system which is watching what we saw in the first forty five minutes. Yeah yeah equally for the price. Spending and i go back to this. This is a team that has to to two top ten players in the world three or four very good players martinez upstanding but it can be outstanding. I don't know how far more you would push it. Actually being really understanding it used to be the amount of. That's it right. Yeah you know you go through the rest and you know who these plays are. I mean we show backer. You know maybe one day in a parallel universe floating. He's a guy who's been rejected by the last two clubs. He was at You know idrissa gay. Who suddenly became ghana gay. And or whatever. I don't get that no no. This is a guy comes from. Everton this white. That's why it's remarkable. I mean we will say oh financial for that's all bogus. It's all nonsense. No yeah limited them your money. They could've done to eleven with better players. But what city do well. I would try different approaches as you know. There's khaldoon always tells us the rudo. Boil hundred million. There's great clip is on say the website where khaldoon is interviewed by some demented. Lick spittle right Who who who says like people say we've spent too much that's not true we've never spent one hundred million hundred million on a player other clubs have done. You know which yeah okay. Fifteen five allocated you're driving at you. Allocate your resources differently. A manager pat. That's probably a good thing. It suitable while would have loved gob and we call we go back on someone everything but the both and by name astronauts firs where were offered to psg. Which i don't. I don't think we're plans. Put per se in the sense. That name are what decided to leave. Boss he had a really close to learn twenty two million euros he said to. Pg a if you want me now you can get me. Come and get me but but that was not. It was not approaching name. That's summer only not center. And within bobby was very similar. What would have happened. What would look these. Psg team had not wanted to leave and we still be a bus or not. Let's say ambassador had agreed to madrid like monaco. I seem to do and had an agreement already in the summer. Twenty seventeen anyway so what. What would the team with the pg. Tim looked far more balanced and far more like the city. One with fifteen really really good players and not to walk incredible blazer and then the rest really good players. I really want that. Because because because they could not because they really plan them and push them and really went after them and because that was the plan you can also make a case equally if they had bought a bunch of really really good players rather than two of the most marketable player in the world. Would they be in a better position. Ancell probably not. Because i pay. Elevate pisces your and in terms of awareness around the world in a way let. let's six. i mean. I'm not saying not sitting right. But who's who's a marketable superstar activity right. If we go. We look at it that way right no completely sponsorship commercial you know. Yeah kevin devine and maybe their best player. Maybe for phone will become super marketable one day. I don't think we're there yet. Rocking sterling might even though. He's kind of fading now. In terms of you know so. I'm just i'm just socities. Two very different approach is to make another point that pep said about name out I don't know where it was quoted by quotes. He said if if name had state barcelona and one two or three champions as more boy. That's true nobody believes nobody knows anyway. Maybe maybe maybe not. Maybe we should set a bus or now you could have three or four more but you decided to go and he decided to go. I didn't get the point. And i wondered if he was he was in his pre much press conference and i didn't understand why he had to go name off leaving or if he was really ago at name on criticizing him for leaving but it didn't really make any sense to me. Also if name. I had stated bush alona and he would have signed messi sized contract extension. Can you imagine what books books would look like. We see the return though. Because is it over is not over is is there. Is there the classic pep risk. Because obviously the knock on pap has been. Okay yeah nice you know. Let's head pep. You want to champions league titles but you one zero champions league titles without the been two. Zero champions league Finals without messy and the conventional wisdom is Will you over think it in big game and you shoot yourself in the foot. That's what the critics say. I don't buy it at all. I think some of those times when they were knocked out in the last couple of years. I mean you can make a case last year with leon goofy lineup but other situations like your that liverpool one. I think you see that left back though against liverpool and you think like one radio but i think over the two legs. I think city could have easily. It could have easily gone the other way but it. Just what's what's your vibe tell you. Because they're playing on tuesday i it's tough so tough task you know. Nominee teams go can go to win to not consider. I know united in the league. In a very in a very different context on the leicester one day of course and and more than two nil. But i think the last game was a very different city team. United game was again. Where united leon panetta after thirty five seconds and after that defended really well and scored the second goal with luke's run and It was it was from united's are national. Psg can can solve replicate that kind of performance but have to believe and only we go. there with. The pressure would be on city in a way because they've got more technology they through pretty much if is in english through if they lose one through. Nps you will have to believe and try to early and then see. They can get their second gold over the times. We've been on the back over mantra and we were under pressure after being so playing in the first leg on thinking. Maybe a tiny chance that we could do that to them and they could doubt if his co. early. And and you know i will i. I'm going to game next week. And i want to. I'm really hoping that they could go. And and just and just go for it and if you lose two one or three one or even three need. It doesn't matter you've tried because because you need something special with that in mind. We know that we would made the point before about fatigue. Both mental and physical stages of the season given that botch highs. one is many trophies. As you have as a manager and he won't you won't the The french french french community schiff. Yes i think you're thinking about real forget. Is there obviously during the title race with there'd be a temptation this weekend to say all right calling daga moist. Can you know title care the rest of the guys play and everybody else. We rest up for tuesday and if we have to take it could cost us the title fine. But let's go and do that. I think the temptation would have been higher. Had they not received one near always with one one draw not at a loss to one. And and i think in the history of the champions digs only seven percent of the times when you've lost a home the first leg to one. You've you've qualified for the for the next round. So seven percent is really low percentage. So i think they know is is a slim chance they will go for it but i think he would have maybe rotated more if that had a big chance to go through. If that makes sense now the play loss on saturday afternoon he would rotate. And i think half of the team probably maybe interesting. Tim on play. Bay won't be like a complete new eleven for the long game. Just got a text from wanda. I can reassure her economy. One hundred and ten percent starts yes thousands the weekend but i just want to clear that next week if you go for maybe play the full fantastic together and see what happens tuesday before. Fantastic de maya name by penny collins to become a fantastic. I tested a defensive player. Defensive defensive talking calico Okay so maybe we can. You pay the five five fantastic's better to madrid against chelsea jewels. This finished in a draw. I think the conventional wisdom from what we saw was round madrid played the way they've played most of the season thus far chelsea except for conceding the goal which was a phenomenal strike by bensimon. You go into a little celebration. There played the way they've done most of the season defending well and be sing chances at the other end because verner i don't i don't want to be critical because it was a great performance. Everywhere goal kante was. I thought he monster dummied field not midfield. By the way was the big game still leaves the big game experience midfield of course and whatever but he has no chemistry whatsoever. Upfront regardless of appraise turnaround police. Or whatever but i just trying to find the car industry but also wonder why do these people make the runs as to why does verner runs is fast. But i don't know if it's too cold telling him to make those runs where he runs wide or he takes doesn't he doesn't set himself up for the for the passing angle. Seems like unless the ball over the top and then obviously his finishing some stock today. He's missed all of this definition. Big chances he's missed. What forty-three this season unless concerned about that. Because i can come and go. Yeah yeah at least chances. But i look at this and say wow like to gone that far into the season the the season until since two arrived at the club to done so well wild still looking and searching for what the best formula is going forward those players and and the last pieces of the jigsaw going forwards. I think he's pretty incredible from two hundred and is far from perfect so just think when when they will be as good going forward than the defensively all much better. They can be even. It's not a knock on call at all. But i'm wondering if there's a parallel there with what he did towards the end of his time has passed where he effectively shorted out the defence and the midfield To to make them watertight upfront. Said well i have so much talent. That doesn't matter. Obviously chelsea of a lot less talent up front than twice as your man do but they have so many more options right. Yeah you can especially in the champions although police itch and verner for example aren't doing it. Hey look this. Hybrid skies pretty good. I've got got hudson door. Got plenty of players. What what sticks this data structure to it though. And that's why they were so good. Because i thought the way that discipline and and tactically there so much better than run madrid on on tuesday night. I'm as you know why. Bring football in twenty. Twenty one is beyond me is really beyond me and i think he'd be do a far better job looking after the election ballots than it does on the pitch for those who mr story marcelo yes. He's brazilian spanish citizenship. For like ten years he's been called in to do his civic duty were. He's got good for him. Basically go and oversee a local polling station. He'd be better bank in which would imply that he would miss the return leg because of pointing rules is not going to happen. They're going to give him a pass and dispossessed in. But it shouldn't be playing. I'm not sure about the back five. I'm not sure about venetia. and benza. The two front worked against i liverpool. I'm not sure. A surgeon work. That and and i think two hundred sixty should've won the game. They were by far the better side. Rumours one sean tonga incredible strike from benzene. And say now this could come back to haunt them at the bridge next week. If ron madrid step up step up a bit play with more intensity play better and maybe play finally new four three three formation. I think it's been an interesting season for content. Because he's had his injuries. He came back a lot of time more recently. I don't know if it it had to do with ramadan as well. He wasn't playing as often kovic Suspended for this eggs injury You spend before But he goes out there and puts in a man of the match performance must've must've and says fiberglass tweeted after the game saying never doubt him his place for two one is is the one for beginning excetera which is true and i do think maybe people have forgotten l. Maybe you maybe you take it for granted that dot com is as good as the because maybe it's also because he hasn't been yeah yes in place merge much hasn't been injured when he has played he hasn't been great over the last six months you be surprised by that kind of performance that game like that. It was unbelievable and and not surprised. Because you've seen him do it before we hadn't seen him do it against atletico madrid second-leg. He was one of the much liverpool when they won that game where he was exceptional again. That night i remember speaking to to hold on to hold said like county is a gift he said. I've never seen anything like this before. In my whole career said even training we'll get the gps data and we look and this is training last tuesday morning training and he said we are gobsmacked by the figures and numbers that we get from. Gps after training session. He said it's ridiculous. We've never seen anything like this. And yet they've been very cautious with him because of the injuries because it ten thirty because he's not. The price was less than five years ago. But what. I seem play on tuesday night in the rain like torrential rain in madrid against miro crews mortgage after a day of fasting and doing the rumour dan so not eating anything until until again until halftime and yet he's everywhere on the pitch he's just yet even even when he has the board. Sometimes you could still see. It's not really sure what to do with the ball in the in in the last thirty yards. But he's just incredible. I think have so much credit for his game and and for the whole career. That is hard because again and we've talked a lot about it but this is someone no one believed in when he was a kid when he was when he was growing up in power know academies. Everybody turned him down. No one believed that he could ever make you even a like division kind of level and yet he determination and courage and the talent so in going through it but my god see my favorite goal kante story which you think sums up. Obviously she just said he turns thirty. I think he's still looks like he's about twelve years old. It is wonderful story about in when you hit arrived at leicester and he was in the car park outside the training. Ground or the stadium or whatever waiting for his ride and several of the other coaches or care club staff. They come out and they see him. I knew like are you. Okay little boy. Are you waiting for your mom to come collect you know. He didn't know we was and he looks. You know he's short but also he just looks and and you know and he's and he's just kind of like you know it's like kinda smiling and quiet and whatever and they thought he was little boy lost. You know what a pro incredible okay. Row madrid. We've been through this with with zoo. You question the back three. I thought eder mealy towel played have paid greg about four but then you don't play then you play natural leftback. Odriozola got marcello was a liability. Play the now or something. It was a liability so you played with ten men already anyway. He no iran four kilometers in the first half. So you under pressure your by far the worst all beaten by much better team than you in the first half and he's your left wing back and he runs four kilometers note on. Would you have gone for three three and put on a sensor or something that yeah definitely definitely and because i also think that as good as a job county did on cruise because crews never had the time to control the game and the pace of the game like he usually does. I think you should give him more option. Going forwards crews can have much better impact on your game. It was it was it was just. I think that was the thinking with the wingbacks so that he would always have the wide option. But it just didn't work out. I think in part because marcello trouble getting up on the pitch. I think they've gotten so much into his head that we need you defensively in you know you can't you can't go up and not come back. They he wasn't even of going forward I wonder if there's maybe we wouldn't have been a game for the Yeah remedied. I love missing. You know so which is not an excuse. Doesn't happen you know social rewards. Lucas vasquez nevada. Foul mandy. I've been mendis shoes laws and we saw it now just for marcello and we want to pick too much masrawi. Yeah we do bet. Big miss hazard fairytale in return leg. Imagine us them for bridges well and everything and then has on schools one to sit there and like you said earlier. They're very capable of the. That's the thing and that's what. I told us to remain vigilant champions league. How about some quick hits. Instead go gob byron have just about a new manager. You had noggins mon from obey lights. It's a five year deal and reportedly anywhere between fifteen million to thirty million in compensation. Is this a good deal. It would be a good deal on his successful so we can say thank you capping of money for manager and no one has ever paid nowhere near that amount for manager before. So yeah of course. If chelsea andre villas boas might've bit higher fill or if it's more yeah. I don't believe it's thirty million. I don't believe there's no bay we'd probably be around twenty five million euros. Which is a lot of money for manager. This is thirty three. This is his dream from unique. So i'm glad it's fulfilling his dream. Let's see if it works. You could argue that. He's methods might not be suited. Only the where we saw. Time to these dressing room. Maybe not he's an incredible talented managers. So let's hope that. I love goes went for me one of the big things and when i said before that byron need need to worry about transition and obviously are worrying about it and i use the word major surgery which annoyed a lot of people wanting to go that far but the point is if you're going for for five years yeah it means you're trusting the post molar levandowski noyer era. Yeah and so this factor. Where how does he deal with the big veterans and the big names and the big egos prevent such an issue with the players because the players will be on their way out could be an issue that people upstairs but hey then going anywhere. Roommate he goes leaving in the summit yukon will replace him. You would think guys never actually leave music and naggus. Men have spoken already. So we're not the kind of tension between flick and what we see. Mine is more valuable to them than brazo. I think going to need to know his place but that means that live cigna needed new boss and it was confirmed as we were recording. These jesse marsch the us manager of all souls. Burke has made the move to the to the cousin clip He's been he's been there before as an assistant yet. He's a remarkable rights. He becomes the third american manager to coach in a big five leak Reno what's of course. There are already did really well. One fun fact about this. All three are ivy league graduates. So your tweets which i know i don't know if there's any message in that but i think i think also true people are talking about to the people at the does this mean for us coaches and a pathway into europe. I don't know that. It means that. Much because bob bradley had to coach in the world cup had to go coach egypt had to find american owners before being given a shot in your Had to come over as like a no name and work his way on the very bottom rung. Jesse marsch very very smart guy already worked for the rv organization. Obviously when when he was in new york. So i don't think all of a sudden opens the doors. They're all great. So based great for you a sakata absolutely spotify founder. Daniel eck is doubling down on saying. He wants to buy arsenal. Josh clunky insist the clubs and for sale tools. I normally believe that everything has its price right. Yeah i guess so. Good luck to dunya egg. And whoever he has with him. If it's true really has jerry vieira. And then he's beckham. We shop st not really convinced by if he wants to pull off there on the table. The komis this is the question about it but i don't think they would send anytime anyway. We reported that they're looking for two billion Which i think personally is a bit much given the club situation and the club's cash-rich but is there a scenario where if you can get bergkamp anri and patrick vieira to come out and speak publicly against the konki family And if you get the fans to turn the schools robbie lyle and all this stuff can and as we said on monday. I'm sorry but you keep those things private and quiet you don't go. All of our social media do interview tonight as agreed i disagree. I just think it depends on your style. If you think about that you can win you do it. I'm more concerned about the fact that they never ever tweeted about. Arsenal kids like yeah. That's a bit odd. Much of the united host roma in the european league In a few hours on thursday. Evening beget timmy about social and the roma funds. They didn't really like something that he said. After the qualification right. I thought this was a lot of fun moments. Said what are you think you're getting roman. He's like oh like. I don't know i haven't seen them play. I don't know anything about them right. And he's right now. Our play was the line of this. Is the thing with flash interviews. You stick them out. I'd be more worried about what he said later when you had time. And he says oh. Role are all italian teams. They're a great defensive side tied at the back and are not no but he walked it back. He said look disrespect. What was fun was the roma fans. They put a the banners up outside three aurea before they gave them a sendoff. Thousands of three either really look at the video. I retweeted antastic. And he said and basically they said they had his quote that picture and he said make sure he remembers who we are. I love Exactly brennan rogers said. he's not interested in leaving leicester right now. Which rules him. Out of the tottenham. Was this the right move. Rented stay where he is. Yeah that doesn't mean that he would not leave the sony right now. He's in a better position than be as spurs much. Better position right here right. Not the squad's champions league football next season ambition money all of that. I think it would make sense for him. Sticky without they're struggling with ericsson hike the manager and those who have been offered wolves nuno and some even say gareth southgate gab. Like it's a big job can learn. It's a high profile job care. Southgate portugeuse no. No because you wouldn't want him or no shortage yet. Thank you know what it's funny giving nuno's there's not a knock on nuno. His agent is just marinas agent. So i'm not sold on ten i. I'm not sure he is a good fit for this club per think it would be okay. Let's go back to the time when harry kane you know my views. I think you shouldn't feel any pressure to win things but he did come out and said I great that. I'm winning individual awards but i wanna think things as a team. I want to win things with my team and that's not happening right now. So people are reading this reading. The tea leaves who look gab. You're wrong he wants to win things Where the team. And he's not going to do it at spurs was gonna move on again. We want to move on. If you feel spurs building a team that will enable some kind of a colt message. It doesn't need to send. I think donna leave. He knows pretty well. Hurricane wants and where he wants to go. So if you're spurs and if you're the owner of spurs already people's doing doing things econ win things with this current team and ryan mason has a manager so a new one in the summer. Well yeah let's see who it is. Let's see what you can do to strengthen that team but listen hurricane. He's not going to stay if he doesn't think they can win. Stuff as much as love this club. That's why we disagree governor. Everybody has been speaking about the super league of course in the last ten days or so back to the you've us somewhat a european semifinalist why he thinks about it. That's right if a piece up with the aroma manager. Paolo overture you. What were your thoughts when you heard of the super league when i saw the new about the super league i stay very worried but today i'm very proud. I'm very proud to be part of the foodball. Because we gave a big big exemple to the society and and in football The most important is this the supporters and the through the the biggest gloves. They want more money but they forget also Is them spend all also the biggest money. Is this big labs who pay one hundred in one hundred fifty million for The players and also this create a big problem in the smallest clubs. So i think the support of the the the coach. The the the place We also i believe we are. We are also proud of of what's happening in this moment in in football. Thank you palettes. The first time we've heard manager participating in in quick hits barcelona plager- not in a few hours and they could go top of league. Two big news is president of drama. Porta will meet lino. Macy's dad for the first time. Big news big shots to come over. We check news this week. Wgn two one two year one contract which was not true at all. Let's see if can convince the family to to stick around and sign a new deal so much of a story whereby he'd already signed with manchester city. Yeah everything's on the table and nearly testimony in the louis. Harare citizenship case have emerged gap. How's it looking for the president who let's be honest as a tough tough last two weeks. Yeah this is the whole thing where they were. Luis suarez needed an italian passport to go and be able to play for you as part of the italian passport. 'cause it means a new passport. He is eligible but he needed to go and you need to take language lessons. It turns out that he's basically briefed in advance. I can't speak a lick of italian audio. This emerge and then nearly basically said heard nothing at all to do with as who is my football he dealt with anything. I had no idea this was going on was offered to me i am. I've got nothing to do is look. I'm not surprised now. I think productivity is a convenient whipping. Boy is the same attitude who last week said. He's been transparent throughout the super league thing. Whatever they were windsor napoli and lots on monday. Defeat for me land. It's five teams for three champions league places poncho head-to-head head heads coming up jewish. Who's getting them. Thus tight i love it. I have to say i love have. They gave me no if they win. They even more than they are right. Now then you've got the you've into again to milan game you've got milan. I'm worried for million to be honest. Who went from second to fifth after this weekend of the lost. They're not trending in the right direction. Not russian but of course they can make it but they would have to be performances. I'm worried about you as well to be honest. So you're worried about an apple you can extrapolate obviously will make it also a noisy men so then. I've got one between milan uvira logic really. I'm really convinced. Atlanta official napoli. I think would make it so. He's one between you. Joe and milan. Uva because of because you've really should. i would love to. Because i think it's a great story finds argue to the milan. Milan deserve to be. They've been off season. They've been leading the league for thirty three percent of the season or something like that and now the fifth unless god punishes in them for Signing up to the super league all can you imagine. Being god wouldn't punish you would be would not punish event for that. Because i think he's already written emma. Also linked with bush dot union. Browns gabby twenty four. Hasn't had a good season im- just cost twenty million. Yeah this is exactly with arsenal. Need right bringing another guy who has a dineh who's not exactly strongest minded and bringing a guy who plays a position where you're already have a whole bunch of other people. I know yulia. Brian can play central attacking midfield. I want him to play there. If arsenal can keep odaguard. You've got smith rope. Play him or and bringing some other on loan for the dining said. I associate alternative. Why mess around with this. He's not value. I know. I like the fact. He's younger. If you find somebody to take william away short by all means go for it but you already have or take the bay away by the way if you want to do that. And you think brandon don't think brent is better than pay personally. I think different ceiling years ago. Leaving leaving door i. It's not a lot of money but twenty million post pandemic with the arsenal of how i don't know i. I think there's better areas where you want to spend you spend your money on when the iphone game No not wendy winger unique as sensual. Leave me complain them. Pretend central. that's perfect. It would be so good for austin just just just unleash. The smith wrote get him signed up. Chelsea have reportedly put a price tag on tammy abraham it's forty million pounds. Does that sound right to you. I think sounds cheap to me. Really cheap and if i'm mcclair who needs someone like jabre home who scored. I think he's is non penalty g. This season is something like zero point five. See i mean he's he's doing well. I think he's doing really well and and he did well last season and it might be not in miami. The finished product. It doesn't matter is twenty two years of age or twenty three years of age. Plenty of time for him to give him better to develop strong. His is a finnish. Our think is intelligent. He has good bass i one. I don't know why they will not keep him unless they really need money. But or if there's a contract issue. I don't know if you if you live in england that needs that play gopher. Every day i i would completely agree with you. Tammy abraham is homegrown. I think he's comfortable with being a reserve striker now. Obviously he wants to play usually but he looks at this and obviously for whatever reason he has hardly played under two but withdrew gone. Why go and spend money you need. You need a big guy. You play the primarily right. He's a big guy. He's physical gives you so much. Effort is finishing can be better. I don't think he's super technically gifted. But i of guy that he's got a good attitude i to meet some finish. Yeah look forty million post pandemic might be. This might be a huge amount of money. And you don't know my. Oh look what a great deal but chelsea just you're going to have to replace you anyway. You're not really going to go into next. He's oh my strikers are. Harvard was not a striker and burner. Doesn't seem so if you let him go as well. It's to you need to bring in in the summer. Yeah i mean unless there's some dude that we haven't heard because chelsea always do this some eighteen year old leg giant who's a center forward but no good inter via the holding company reportedly secure some two hundred million euros in financing from bain capital gab. Does this mean down to your contact. Going shoes spending spree in the summer. Of course it does. And they're all saying the same thing. I'm just gonna make a prediction. 'cause this is how football fans work and i have to say this. We in the media work right. The message has been especially after the enormous amounts of money they spent Chickens have come home to roost. City said more young players cut the wage mail which is going to be difficult because they have all these old guys who are difficult to move their big money. Whether it's alexis sanchez or dialer or machines. Contra might be up finally all who nobody's gonna take these people off you unless you pay for them to leave like arsenal did with also so this has to be the message and that money has to go to service the debt right very very simple to keep the because there are rules that still apply. You can't just keep ignoring them. So i hope the club had firm. I hope to clear on this. I hope he's hinted people are saying well. I need this and that listen. I know you always want to win. I hope contest days works with the players. He has integrates more of the younger players. Because we do have some good young players. I think can use more playing time and move forward that way. Nothing that is not thing. I need a proven winner. Now risks that they might have to sell one of the most valuable. Let's say lukaku just for the sake of to be able to to to to do. We invest money to strengthening disquieting other positions that they won't all just if you saw the contract to avoid doing that. Yeah no. I don't think lukaku wants to leave. I think unless somebody shows up with two hundred million or whatever hundred fifty million. It's not going to happen There are others who are saleable assets but ebola you know by stony They do have player a novice allowed at all. But i think i don't think that is the intention. The intention is no more spending and just bleed these guys out who coordinator at some point. Somebody shows up with stupid money. Somebody is a great euros or whatever that could all change. But i don't see that happening accent. Introducing a new third kit. That is inspired by bob marley to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of his passing jewels. Something tells me you're going to love it. I love this i love. I love the love story between six and demonte family. You know one of his sons singing before games nine again three little birds or unofficial club. Yeah anthem is one of the anthems of the club and this show is very much inspired from three dates of birth. So well don't do. I ask and to bob money's family as well and keeping keeping older legacy alive and everything and we knew much melilla football so the right user play battersea park just on god. We know your thoughts latins new contract extension but you have some status on what happened to him and to milan since his big clash with lulu kaku in the tiny. Yes and the alleged Do want to suggest that somebody did do food. Twos latin exactly. Somebody else might have done that because basically we're talking in the last since then last four months. His scoreline reads three goals two red cards. Ooh one crazy crazy motorbike graduate weird at a music festival. Who won investigation for violating lockdown rules one investigation for owning shares in betting company. Ooh and a public spat with the king. Ron james. Oh yeah not the greatest run. He's going to have to step up to the contract worthwhile right. That brings us join in. But you gotta come back on monday. It's exciting german cup. Dave people cut semifinals house. There's not too but there's lots of other stuff so we won't be back until then Love the game. Love your neighbor love.

They wanted to grow. Group. They had one goal against I hate to ask two questions at once but I'll do it here. Anyway. First off, how is the team reacting to the earlier success? And then how were the fans and the rest of the country reacting to the early success? In the Sixers has been great. That was the objective. They're hard to win the three group stages games. Did that. The issue was we had one very good half against Korea. The first one we hides. Fort win against no way in the second game. The content in the performance was not that amazing therefore higher than they that win. And then we had a very disappointed performance in the last game against Don really disappointing for most of it, it was a bit better in the second half and in the last half hour, but he was it was poor from the team and for those players are capable of producing, and, and I think the call in. Of shied away from from the criticism after the game saying this is not the time to talk about what went wrong tonight or what we didn't do well, which, which Arthur was wrong, because a lot of things wrong from ho coaching, and her team selection to what the players did on the page and the father that she didn't want to talk about it. But the only thing that I seem to matter to them was the three wins and they got that. And now they want to move stray away to the to the last sixteen. So let's see if that works. But there was a lot to say about how poor they were against Nigeria, it's interesting, and it's making stuff first time they've ever won. All three games in group play to advance as top of the girth. I'm wondering about Wendy Renard. Here's a player that gave up an own-goal with all due to a loss of concentration in the second game against Norway, in which they ended up going ahead with the VAR aided call in which Eugene Lissa mayor put Soleil to win two one and then in the third game she steps up right? Takes the PK but she misses and she's able to retake due to the goalkeeper from Nigeria. Leaving early. What are some of the thoughts where you are about Renard in her performance thus far? I mean she's she's one of the leaders of that team. Anyway. She's one of the best into bikes in the world. And there was a lot of spotlight on her before going before going before the side of the work of going into this World Cup. So that's why I want to say because she's been so successful Willion, also because when the to over two years ago, she took the ban of captain away from her to give it to a Nari. And, and her justification was, I just wanted to focus on herself on her wound performances because I think Jack dot with as a captain, maybe an hour is not focused enough. She was all over the place. And, and so we've seen an improvement, I think with the national team in her own performances since she's not the captain anymore. She's, she's lead that him very well. So find the competition authority was standing in South Korea with the to go. She's called didn't have much to do defensively against nowhere should have been more work defensively, and we. Oh a few weaknesses and the own goal was a bit weird though from from a playoff quality over caliber. And then against Nigeria, there's a couple of times, where Arthur shoes, almost got caught, and then in the end because she's because she's quote quick, and she's quite clever. She she go, where with it. But I just can't wait now for her, but also for the rest of the team, and for Jack to see them in games that really mattered. I mean it was great to win those three matches lesser against Brazil in the last sixteen less against the US if they go through the quarters and etc. Because they haven't really been tested yet. Joseph find it interesting that you mentioned people are questioning Corinne, Deocracy surly in the tournament specifically after the Nigeria performance, what specifically are like the personnel decisions or the player decisions that she's being criticized over. I mean obviously the, the first one to drop Govan for the first game the striker because she was laid twice going into training in, in that week, does does her way of working does her discipline, things have to be in a certain way. If you don't fit in, in, in, in that setup then you out, she dropped her in front of everybody else grove on cried twice actually, before she left the hotel. And then once she goes to the bronze, and then she, she got her back in the second hand and she's called the small in terms of team selection, especially I mean for that for the Nigeria game, the fight that fight example, assay. You started on the left hand side, which for me. There's no debate that she shouldn't have started, again, the find that ocean Elorza, who's maybe one of the best strikers, in the world right now has to on the left hand side, because Jack things her and Mashri who played together. I'll Yonne combined well, on the left hand side, but you lose everything that summer is good. She's the clinical finish and the movement inside the box, because you put her on the left inside when she's no wing. She's never been a wing. So for me does where does what she she got it wrong in the group stage, that does sort of left, unsigned our start that Finn Cascarino on the right hand side every single day of the week. And she's she left a half for the second gaming us. No way she go back in for the game against Nigeria, and she didn't you knew. She didn't finish the game. There's a few things like that with even with Boussac Lia in midfield. I think Bill brings more than Bruce agree. I midfield alongside Denali and I'm not even sure just to finish, because I've talked a lot about that, about gates Gaetano Tina. As a number ten Tina for me has nothing in this World Cup so far. It was one of my points in my report on the game last night for dot com. I don't get Gaetano Tina as a number ten in that four to three. One thing she doesn't create enough. She's not clinical enough. We still have missing. Three big chances against Nigeria she has zero Sean Tonga for number ten in a game night against G is just not good enough. And this could be the biggest issue for me going into the last sixteen and forward, maybe is what to do with Tina because I believe that Jack will keep faith in her, and we'll keep building a team around her and for me that's the wrong coal nothing. What tina's the Akron came in brought her back in right? She had been phased out with the other coaches and realize that they need the number ten. So they bring in the veteran comeback in and help who else could you see playing that role because I'm wondering can Elissa America in there and almost sit underneath because she is so dynamic in the box. In addition to her excellent time runs off the wings, but they have plenty of. Winger's between Dionny and Cascarino as I've ever been thought about at the national team level. Yeah, you're right, all you change the system. And you go for three which for me when you get to those big games against the US there's only one system that FRANZ should play for me. They get to the quarterfinal against the US is to play four three and two to much the US formation. If you go four to three one, you're gonna get overrun another number in midfield. And I can already see the dominance that the US could have on these French side. If you go four three you, you could put a summer in the center, you Tina out and you've got you to wingers Jenny and Cascarino who have so much space and kids, and then you strengthen you midfield with only Besigye and Bilbo, for example, all get your the PG midfielder as well. There's, there's so many options, you could use Jack seems to be so shutdown down four two, three one with teenagers number ten I really don't believe she's going to change anything. How would you describe jill's a sense of pressure around this team? When we spoke to you a week ago. It seemed like the country was very behind this team. There was a lot of positivity. Now I hear more questions in your voice. Is that a reflection of the French public as well? No so much. It's more. It's more from the media and, and actually from inside the Cam, there's, there's a few people saying, but the media, too, harsh we don't to hush. This is what we would do for the main, for example, we do exactly the reached our level. Now where, you know, there's no, but, you know, it's the workup our home and we should become with them. No, it was just no good enough against GI. And it should be said the funds are still very much on board. We saw the atmosphere against in Hainan. On on Sunday nights Monday nights. It was it was fantastic. And they would be that. I mean, especially if he's Brazilian the last sixteen just imagine the misfit, and these game would mean a such a big rubber between Brazilian FRANZ in football in general, this will be even more special. And then if we get to the quarter-finals in Paris, at the US that's going to be even better. So the support and so far, the examine the passionate is much there. The pressure hasn't seem yet to get to the girls and to the players and to jock so far. I believe he will get that if we play Brazil in the last sixteen because that would feel like whoa, this is actually really happening. This is a proper proper workup nocco much. This is FRANZ against Brazil. This is everything that everybody is always wanted and just about a few days ago, few days either to go for it. So maybe the pressure then we get to them. And I'm not sure how they will respond to it jus I only have one other question for you. It's actually a little bit away from the field here in the United States. The US women's national team has some very like brand identifiable stars. Alex Morgan, Meghan, repeat. No tobin. Heath our players who fans have really gravitated to. I wonder as this French team kind of gets this new level of national spotlight who are the players that the French public is starting to fall in love with and really gravitate to. Survived. Good question is fascinating to see how how the whole thing is evolved from why they were four years ago, even two years ago and whether or not obviously, the worker being a home massively exposure, and focus and the funds, etc. I think. For what we're saying because she's one of the best and because she's she's likeable and she's golden, she's only five hours away from being France. According pece. Was a French top goalscorer ever. So that would take even to even more next level, but she's one of those star. So he's I'm on the Cup ten because she, she represents so much. She's the leader is the leadership as is a quality, she's everywhere on the page. She's she's so dominant in everything she does, when they are now is another one, which the gone into sort of superstar caliber thing in France. She does TV advert. She took so law. There's a lot of things written about her. You see a lot of people with shirts with the name on the bike, and I think that can only go and get bigger and bigger elite for the three players. You've got a lot as well for, for Johnny for Cascarino for modules, well, and any sold. People coming from different backgrounds, and, again, these team has shown the United FRANZ people from different backgrounds and recognizing themselves in in, in those players. And again like the has done a lot for the stardom of the players to. Just to follow up on what you're saying to me, who stands out in terms of the level of play positionally, as like the best that we've seen thus far in group stage, it would have to be Cascarino on that, right? And Magyari as a leftback those two, I don't think there's been a similar performance by anyone on any other team. The Keita perish, maybe, for England on that, right? With Cascarino it'd be interesting to watch if their if their names become more popular, especially Magyari. It that leftback position. You're on. Fantastic. And she wears the number ten. Back within them. Not. Usually what you what you have. She she's loving and the fines. I think I don't so much them poten-, especially what it means to French football. That has been great and Cascarino. She's so exciting. She's got so much killed, and so much pace. And she's, she just fantastic on the board. And she's only twenty two so the still room for improvement for her uniform module as well. The to have great stories on how they got to where they are now. I would only because I think she's one of the best midfielders in the world because she's been so good with FRANZ, and she's ten and, and for, for a while told you the last time I was on the show is when how American she is in the way she thinks, in the mindset, and all those things she learned when she was a potent. I think she's she'd be the so find this, you can follow him on Twitter at Laurent, Julian, that's at. L. A. U. R. J. U. L. I E N jewels. Thanks to the time. And we hope to speak with you later in the tournament anytime guy. Thank you very much Kate. Another great conversation there with Jules. We are building up, potentially to that juicy quarterfinal between the us, and France. And folks can rest assured should that happen. We will definitely be having Julian on the show again. So good. And I loved his point about how the girls on the team are a little uncomfortable with the media attention and more importantly, the scrutiny when they are getting called out for either bad behavior interesting tactics. And there is a maturation there. Is a huge growth that needs to happen, as a player when all of a sudden, when you're usually ignored by mainstream media, and then people start talking about tactics and start calling you out. You saw it with the US team. I remember being on the team in towards the end of my career and someone like did you hear what someone said about you? And I'm like, no. And nor do I care because I don't want to get rattled by outside noises. But that's how I dealt with it. But at some point with all the different ways that your accent. They're hearing the complaints that are hearing the criticism. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens with this French team, if they have if they go to keep moving on, but they're having so-so performances. What that noise does to them. All right. See today, which for my money has been the most interesting group or maybe the most surprising group of this World Cup and overly went haywire when Italy was able to beat Australia. And that opener, I will remind folks that was an Australian team that I had going all the way to the final. So it really shook me when groups the open, and it's been an interesting ride ever since entering the final day of group play. Here's what the standings looked like Italy was in first place with six points from their two wins Brazil was. In second place with a goal differential edge over Australia who were in third. And of course Jamaica winless end without a point through their first two games were enforced. The two scores today. Australia beats Jamaica by final score. A four to one Sam ker with the hat trick. Plus one she gets all four goals for Australia in that four one win. And then in the other match which was played simultaneously. Brazil beats Italy one nothing on a late. And for my money a little bit controversial penalty that went Brazil's way. Marta is able to convert it. Her seventeenth goal all time in a World Cup. No player, man or woman has ever scored more. World Cup goals now than Martha. Let's start with that Australia and Jamaica game though, Kate, this was all Sam, Kerr, and of course the goals, but it was the way she dominated the air for me in this one, it was like watching a player possess just a single minded. Attitude to go get the ball every time it was floated into the box. She was getting on the end of it and more often than not it seemed ended up in the back of the net. She is naturally gifted athletically. She has that ability with pace and power to find those seems impacts because she harnesses her intelligence as well in order to do so. But it's more the technique that she has on converting those opportunities she doesn't get rattled. And those big moments she was eighty today by some poor marking in the box. So let's be honest and some excellent service, but it doesn't matter how many times have we seen it where players wide open the box Alexander pup, for example, I thought Br thought. Bona say I had an opportunity for Italy where they're open and they don't convert. And that's the difference is she executes in those key moments. And it wasn't just once it wasn't just twice or even that third time on the quick release. It was the fourth time for me is this is a player that saw an opportunity to, to. Jump on a goalkeeper McClure who had been substituted in starting goalkeeper who I looked at you. I'm like, why is this player playing after Schneider, didn't so well, and it was because to get people minutes, right? And to give new players. They're obviously not going to make it through. And let's let's give him an opportunity to play. But it bit them a little bit with that last goal. Because on a back past the goalkeeper from Jamaica has a bad touch, and Sam Kerr pounces on. And that goal in itself is a reason why they're not in third place. There are bad touches nerve bad touches that one that set up the fourth goal for curse, certainly. A really really unfortunate are there for the Jamaican goalie? So Colonel has five of Australia's eight goal, she's tied with Alex Morgan right now for the top scoring honors in the World Cup Kate. I'm curious. We've now got three pieces of evidence on this Austrailia team disastrous opener a rebound performance against what we have to say is, is kind of a not on their level Jamaican side. Today and then kind of that weird game against Brazil, where for the first half they're down to nothing. They get goal and then just really remarkable comeback in the second half. This Australian team has been to the quarterfinals of the last three World Cups based on what you've seen so far. Are they good enough to get past that this time around? Well, it depends on the opponent to be honest. It depends on how what that opponent, we know they're going to get Norway in the round of sixteen. Oh, gosh. How do you feel about that matchup, if you're in perspective, I think both of them are probably relieved that they're getting one another because they both have owner abilities on which to explai- Norway, especially without Graham Hansen, who might have had ligament tears. She rolled her ankle pretty badly. And if it's that bad, and there's usually naturally, the ligaments stretching ligament, tear depends, whether or not the degree of which will determine whether or not she can play that's their most creative player. So they so Australia lead playing against a four four two and you just wonder if they have that speed in behind punish very slow central back pairing, that Austrailia has and. Norway or saying. Yeah. And then for Australia, can't Sam gir- beat the to Chelsea defenders for Norway melda endorsed daughter who are very good in the air and defending not the fleet is to foot smart player. So it's going to be interesting to watch that matchup. Like what we thought maybe Austrailia might play France where like if they would have gotten there we are like, oh, that is tough. But this one I don't know who's going to win that one. Yeah. No. It's an interesting match. And I think one that like whenever you get the two second place teams and that's what that's going to be you really have the potential for for an amazing game because those two second-place teams usually should match up pretty evenly. Let's give Jamaica some final thoughts. This is a team that I think a few of the other underdog teams you really fall in love with them, as you start to learn their stories. What they've overcome just to get to this point. What did you make of what we saw from Jamaica at this World Cup ISA a team that was very exciting going forward? We saw bunny Shah a player that came in as one of the most amazing players. And we got to see the power and her ability take on players fearlessness. Her strike though, lacy strikes about. She's a little bit errant stell. She's still too young Tennessee star who grew up in Jamaica and came came to America. And now she's playing in Europe. But she's a player that it's gonna be fun to watch her trajectory and then they got their first goal. And this is a team that is doing well in spite of their federation, sedillo, Marley. Bob marley's. Daughter runs the foundation has been supporting this team. So hopefully this goal is something that can trigger more support not only from their national governing body their federation as well as from locals. So the Jamaican federation cut funding for the team in two thousand and they disbanded the team in two thousand sixteen again, and from two thousand fifteen to two thousand eighteen there was a thirty month stretch where Jamaica didn't play a single international match. Now there's an article in the Huffington Post by Arthur, Jessica Luther that has some interesting kind of follow up on this Jamaican team. She had a chance to speak to sydell Marley, just in the last few days, one thing that I took from it was that the federation may be making some moves here. And there's a contract that all up the per month, pay for the reggae girls that'll be retroactive to the beginning of the year. So that's a positive sign the coach will receive what appears to be a pretty significant stipend, if not. Salary and the Jamaican federation is saying that it spent four million dollars on the team. Although according to Luther is reporting the coaches are disputing that precise number. So maybe still some work to be done from the federation. However Sabella Molly was asked what will happen if a federation doesn't step up now and this is what was her quote kid on data this, if the federation wants to play muddy I got me do for them bitches. I love Saddam Mara. I didn't know much about him before this woke Cup. But I'm starting to love Hella Marley. You mentioned that they get the goal they get their moment. We want all these underdog teams to have their moment. The goal comes from Havana, salon in the forty eight minute. She's got a Cuban-American father, a Jamaican born mother raised in Florida represented the us at the under seventeen twenty and twenty three levels. So what a moment for her to get the goal we mentioned her before on this podcast, she's playing the enemy yourself for Seattle and Washington. I believe she's now playing in Norway. And the player that we talked a lot about bunny Shaw, had her moments as well because she provides the assist on pads. It's a beautiful pass, isn't it? It's a really you know, maybe not a part of Shaw's game that we talked a lot about. But a really nice pass to set it up, we mentioned that Shaw has signed a contract with Boredeaux I think what I'm most interested moving forward with this Jamaican team is what happens to the rest of those players because this is a very, very Kate young team. I think they had five or six players who are NCAA tied one of them the player that you mentioned the goalie Sydney Schneider university of North Carolina, Wilmington still has some eligibility left. What happens to those players, when they're out of the US college system. Do they, perhaps inspired by this experience? Go try to play pro. Whether that's in the w cell or in Europe do they then improve their abilities. And when Jamaica if Jamaica is back in twenty twenty three will they be a team that's built on this, right? Because it's, it's one thing to have the moment to get here. I think the real test for Jamaican football. The federation will be, how do they support this team over the next? Four years. And what does this team look like when they get back? It's all about harnessing momentum. They've built now and it's all about exploring other options besides the domestic ones if at all. There are any domestic ones whether that's payment, what have you. And it's really about being your own advocate, when there's I mean, this reminds me of all of us twenty twenty years ago when there wasn't a league to play in when there wasn't a found a foundational development league that you could play. And you need to go searching for it on your own and it's uncomfortable and it's hard be gotta go do it. And that's something that a lot of these players are going to have to do if they really want to continue playing. And if they do that this Jamaica team for years from now we'll be better like we see with a lot of the other teams that are kind of one or two cycles, ahead of them. So the other game in group c today Brazil with the one victory over Italy. The penalty comes right around the seventy fifth minutes for those that didn't see it or maybe struggling to remember, I'll describe the play as best. I can. Dina's on the ball. She puts it pushes it past the defender, whose Leonardi the number five for Italy Leonardo tries to kind of step in front of Debbie NIA dominion goes down. And it's a penalty. Kate. Did you think it was a penalty based on how they're calling everything this tournament? It's a pound eight because the defender I made contact with the body instead of getting into the path of the run. See I thought I thought she initially triggered contact. Okay. I thought she said, a step sideways laterally instead of at a forty five degree angle because you're defender, get your body in front. But you do it at a forty five degree angle from where you're at if your shoulders shoulder with another player, and then you get your body in between the ball and the attacker, I thought that was that, that was the made the angle more acute to there's, there's my geek word today. So it made it to acute. And then it was like, okay, I thought Dina Solta into has been amazing in this game. This is a player, I think the younger players for Brazil have not stepped up. Don't think there is good as what we anticipated Brazil to be. And they've had to rely on their veterans. I Christianity at all. But did it being as one player that did well today, and she sold it, and she'd got it, and she put her team in a great situation because of that she was able to draw foul. She sold it. She did not simulate it. She sold the contact and the ref I thought it was a penalty. I really felt it was a harsh decision. I thought you was a centreback would say, no, you can't I you know, I would say no, but it just other calling everything else this tournament, it is. They're calling every bit of contact Lanar interesting player. She's the only non Italian club team based player in that Italian national team. She plays for athletic Madrid. And of course, we know that debate wears the number nine she also plays for North Carolina courage. The historical footnote of this game is Martha getting her seventeen th World Cup goal on the penalty. You've played against Martha at like peak peak. Marta peak. Martha was that the best women's footballer of all time. I hate that best of all time. I hate them. She the best you ever defense is the best one, one player I've ever gone against more importantly, is the goal. She scoring and World Cups and Olympics in general, right? She shows up in the big moments. A lotta times you will try to Mark their best players, and so many times people try to shut down me a ham, Abby, Wambach, etc. And sometimes they do mar does not one of those players you can shut down. So I refuse to do best or go because, you know what every circumstance every cycle is different. You could be the greatest of all time. With the limited resources you had. I'm sorry, Michelle Akers is still the best player I have played with. Imagine Michelle Akers with all the resources. There are now my. It would unbelievable. So but in the big moments in World Cup. She's the best World Cup player of all time is Xiam. Is she the most dominant attacking player not now? No, no, no. No, obviously not now just at her peak was there was ever a player that could do like no one can do, even if she wasn't the best you can say okay well that comes down to your preferences. But like to dominate I don't I just don't know that I ever saw a game like that. Every defender has certain type of attacker, that is hard for them to play for whatever reason just because you have a defensive style and it works really well really, really well against ninety percent of the floor. It's obviously wouldn't be playing this level. It didn't. But there's always that ten percent that outliers that are, like, I just cannot figure out how to stop this person Martha is one of those where that was mostly every defenders ten percent of. I don't know. I'm going to do on this one, right? Christie Ran Cohen was the best defender of the US had for a long time. She couldn't stop her. So I have no idea. All right. So let's recap kind of where we're at then in group c after all of this, Italy, despite the defeat ends up winning the group we've got three teams tied with six points atop the group first time that's ever happened out of women's World Cup that niggly beats Austrailia, Australia Brazil, and Brazil beats Australia. Brazil beat Italy that has never happened that those three things to teams got forward how crazy this would be. Yeah. No. You're happy that I always think the third place teams getting through a little bit ruins at tournament. Then, like, I'm glad I'm glad in this instance today because none of those three teams deserve to be out of the tournament as it is. Right. So Italy wins the group, they're going to get either China or potentially Nigeria as best, I understand the brackets Australia. Norway is set. That's a round of sixteen matchup for sure. And then Brazil as they go through is the third place. Team. We'll get either France or Germany. I think it's going to be France. So they would actually end up on potentially the US side of the bracket. If the US does manage to win their group that Brazil, France round of sixteen game. I know Brazil isn't the Brazil of two thousand mid-2000s, but I don't think we expected to get France and Brazil round and sixteen now because the midfield to of France, I think is going to dismantle the midfield Brazil. It's just a matter can handle the individual personality. So that is an exciting match up. I don't think anyone had that one picked up. I would love to see know how they have that for March madness for the basketball, and it's like only four people that are the whole entire five billion people with Beckett's Pinkas. I don't think anyone picked this matchup. Yeah. I bet I bet you because not many people had Italy finishing about Brazil in the group and that all comes down Italy real quick, on Italy, because I know I'm messing with the timings here, but. There. What round of sixteen quarterfinal? I know we talk about the Matt matchups. We don't know who it'll be against China or Nigeria, they'd still be the favourite, right? Yes. Yes. Because they're structured, they're so hard to score against look at they haven't given up a run a play goal. They've only given up a goal off to penalty kicks. This is a team that is defense group to think about that. Who needs Kerr grew, right? Mike Cooney market in the Cristiana group, but not only that midfield. I mean Serono Giuliani, Google Yanni. Oh my goodness. They bossed that midfield. I thought they did an excellent job until the end and this is a team that didn't do a lot of rotation. Didn't have a lot of fresh legs out there. Decide to keep the same lineup for the most part. And you could see those tired legs today, art. So that is group c tomorrow, we've got group d we're going to preview those games but first, a conversation about a unexpected starter for the US in their second game of this World Cup that next after the break. Great to have you back with us here on ESPN AFC special coverage of the two thousand nine hundred nine women's World Cup alongside Kate Markgraff Sebastian saw Kate we've been focusing on the rest of the tournament, but let's bring it back to the US team now because in their second match against Chile. We got to see Ali Krieger. Get a start. Now, you had mentioned before I think that Morgan Brian was maybe the most surprising person on this roster for you. I would have put Morgan Bryan probably is my most surprising pick and then Allie Krieger, like second or third now because I don't think Alexander's are good player or deserves to be on the World Cup team. But because she had been out of the picture for so long under. Jill. I wonder what you thought of her inclusion when you saw it, I was surprised to see Alexander's inclusion, but I was more surprised a about a month earlier or maybe three weeks before they announced it when she brought her in for that, Belgium, Matt. Yes, because it was like wait what like what's going on because she had not been included. She basically was sent out to pasture. What's twenty sixteen so she was on the Olympic team in two thousand sixteen by the way, her first Olympic roster. She'd been an alternate in a way, and then in two thousand twelve she had like an ACL injury that she just didn't recover in time from so she'd been waiting to be an Olympian her whole career. She finally gets it. She had a great season two thousand seventeen in the NWEA sell. She's a first team all NWF cell and she actually gets called into the tournament of nations that year in twenty seventeen does not play a single minute in that tournament and effectively from there. And this is as described to me by Allie goes into a period of total radio. Silence. With the national team staff. Including Jill Ellis. And that's where I think she kind of goes into the period of as you say being sent off to pasture. Yes, she was because part of that is, she moved from right outside back as you do as you get older. You just can't cover the mileage that you need running away from six to eight miles right up and down that flank and usually towards the latter part of that, like, more like seventy miles per game and seven the centrebacks we running anywhere from four to six depending on the number sprint loads, you have to do chasing down forward. So this player slowly gets moved into central defence for Orlando. And I think that it was good in terms of career-long Javadi for her, but bad in terms of national team selection because at that point, Becky Sauerbrun is still the country's best centreback. Right. And you had other players still in the mix. And now it's Abby, Kemper Securities about tearing Davidson kind came onto the picture a little bit late about a year ago, and with all that it just didn't Emily sawn it. So it didn't look like they needed five centreback. So then they put her at right back. And they realized and you could tell by. The way they played in that second game. They're not having our overlap as a right back because she always, even when she was a right back. She did not like to get in line. She likes to hit that service at, like eighteen yards out when she get down, and then she would cross a little bit early, so they're bringing her in and they're asking you to play a little bit more central and be a different playmaker from the inside wide channel and having the winger do more the wing work instead of like an overlapping around that you'll see with Kellyanne Harris. So she brings a different look she brings experience. It was shocking that she was included. And she's basically the sub it seems for Kelli O'Hara. I'm fascinated to see if she plays again but she's really also there because she's a really good at connecting people off the field. She's very well liked, and not that it needs to be sorority soccer or anything off the pitch. But this is a player that can connect young and old. He's one of those inclusion players when he first joined the team, she's very nice. She brings you and she calms your nerves a little bit. And she makes sure she finds those people crystal done talks about it. How Alec Kruger was one of the. That brought her and made her feel comfortable and she's also very experienced. This is our third World Cup two thousand fifteen I think she started all seven matches pretty much played every minute as the team went on to win it on two thousand eleven you'll remember she hits the game winning penalty in that epic quarterfinal after the comeback against Brazil. So she's had her moments. And it's interesting. You mentioned her as a locker room favored, she's also a fan favourite Kate because I remember during this time when she was hands. When she was not being called into the national team, you would get just mounds of people on Twitter who were like where's alley Krieger wears alley Krieger? And we would do a broadcast. And if you mentioned alley Krieger, the fact that she wasn't called into camp, people would go wild on on Twitter about it. And it was really interesting. Then when she gets called back into the team, of course, Twitter explodes Oliver fans are going wild, and then I saw it in person because we were in Saint Louis and for the second to last game of the sendoff series. And in those atmospheres you get a sense as each player like walks onto the field or is introduced like who's really a fan favourite and you expect like Alex Morgan to get a loud, applause, you expect Tobin heath to get a loud applause, Alec Krieger has an amazing resume just gave it to you. But as its central defence, or as a defender, you don't usually don't get that, you know, listen, she's female athlete. That's very attractive. So there's always going to be a part of this whole dynamic is the same on the men. Get different fan base you just more attuned to it on the women's side because you're you're in a I think fans deathly on the women's side get very attached to their players for whatever reason. And, you know, you say one thing, and it's like, well because you ate them, and I'm like, no, it's because I'm being honest because this is my job as we heard earlier Julian talking about the French players not used to criticism. Right. So this is just part of it. And yes, she's got a huge fan base. Obviously, she's engaged to teammate ashlin Harris engaged in March. Relationship public, right? It'd been out, but now it's definitely out. And so for a lot of different reasons she is breaking different barriers, and her inclusion to me was, you know, this is a player that brings a ton of experience. It's not atypical for Jill to do this. She did this in the last World Cup is well, she brought Shannon box Christie ramp own Santa box. More was the one that was kind of like, what but jilts spoke to the fact that Shannon's leadership, and her leadership at training and our leadership, and her more than any of the other veterans that weren't playing was really what stood out. And she was very thankful that she did that. So because it was such a good experience. She did it again. You said you were surprised when you saw Krieger get the initial call back into the team, maybe not to make the World Cup team. Because then we'd seen her in some call ups and stuff, but early in the season she was surprised as well. She told me she was in between two a day sessions with Orlando pride in preseason when she got the call. And she almost had to like ask the people around, or is this. Joe even cameras around place, but she did actually mention by name Sydney LaRouche. She said, Sydney Larue was always in Rio during that kind of dark period of no communication, with the national team staff saying look you're gonna get a call back in. You're going to get a client Krieger told me yourself like she watched every single game. And she knew that the outside back spots were not getting locked down. So she knew it the people around or were telling it. She was listening to the right people around or one of them's a former teammate and a World Cup winner herself in Larue, and they all knew they, they knew without knowing that, that this opportunity would come up the question, I want to ask you, Kate is because this is what I thought when I, I thought was like, oh, this is a little bit unindicted -ment on jealous. Seventy here's the best Intel as well. You had you clearly moved on from this player. You went out and try to lot of other players at that outside back position. And then I think over like twenty five months she had one call up one cap and then months before a World Cup. You come back to this player that to me would seem to be like a mistake that you never should have moved off this player. So in that this to me is evidence that maybe jealous not as getting it wrong now including Krieger, but was wrong to have moved off Krieger when she did. Well, you have to consider that other factors at play here. Right. You want to you want to bring in your w sell players that are doing well, so you bring in Matthias from North Carolina, you bring in Jill Kinkel right till he doesn't work out, for reasons that have been widely discussed. Right. You can look that one up Merritt Mathias isn't ready. So there you go. Kelli O'Hara, who is playing well in wwl does not. Actually play outside back. But then she gets injured. So you had Harrah's backup, you had it as sawn it and then sonnet is always playing. And then you see that Australia game that five three game and you see saunas positioning. And she is a centreback asked to play outside back. And this is a player, whether you know, whether it was the whole team collectors defending on that, right? Hand side, that whole entire backline had a bad day. And then all of a sudden, the call went out to Krieger, so to me, it was we tried all these different things, and it just didn't work. It's less getting selected, and more wise, Morgan, Brian getting selected when we have a Molly, sorry, Casey short, the best locked on leftback defender that has that is. That is that you can't. 'cause you can't select tinkle, right? That it's been documented or dilatot not to. So. Short had a had a great case to make this team. Yeah. Her and Lynn Williams are probably the two. Abs Lynn Lynn Lynn is unbelievably fast with the ball, but just doesn't convert. Yeah. That's a discussion for another product. That's probably one two or three months ago. I want to mention one more note as far as the alley Krieger. Jill LS dynamic there. Because I think the fact that there was this long radio. Silence is a little bit of window into how this team works. I have heard from players. One of the whispers, you hear from players about Jill Alice, one of the complaints, is that. Man-management player management communication is not always, especially over the last couple years, maybe been at a place for the players always felt informed. That's something that I've heard from more than one player and more than one person connected to players. And so, I wonder if that's the thing. You know that either played a role into Krieger absence or if it's just that Krieger absences, kind of proof of that, that a player who ends up being in a World Cup for year, almost like over a year had no contact from the national team staff in that cycle that to me, seems very strange. I think it's interesting to hear players talk about coaches totally, and I've been on both sides, and I've hated coaches at later, I loved, and I think you almost need another witness in that room. Right. I have been like, had I been on phone calls where I've actually been cut from team? And then it's like what do you mean? I didn't cut you. I just thought it was going to bring you in for ever. And I was like, kind of the same thing, but players here what they hear and sometimes coaches don't communicate well, and they're a confluence of so many things that can happen that can leave people in different perceptions of, of what was actually said. So I. If, if they end up winning a World Cup, it's going to be because of excellent management. No doubt. Both both on and off the field type management, totally so let's wait till data's. Yeah. And I would also say this, there are a lot of people were very critical of Gillette's critical of everybody totally but she's got a World Cup title under about. And I think she has in the World Cup title yet. Our biggest mistake, thus far has been the selection of harasser in the Olympics. But that was not her fall as much as Tom ceremony. The psycho before not vetting out new players. There is having a Riley. Got about Tom when you. Players that are in this tournament. Minutes during ceremonies time, either Riley, Heather O'Reilly is a known entity. Why would you give that many minutes when you can give other minutes to other people and bleed new people out? Right, right. You're saying Alison sixteen was just her pool with limited because she came in, in two thousand fifteen so she had to deal with these players that and then and then she had like seven retirements, even though I mean for me, it was always like why taking so many veterans of the World Cup if they're gonna play ten glory minutes. But like she said, Shannon boxes a big reason why they won. I mean I maybe wouldn't take Lord slutty or something like that. Right. But so be it at the end of the day they won the title. So whatever the personnel decisions are bitter in the button. Twenty sixteen. She made she's trying to make sure she hit make there this time. Well, I would just say this, she will be one of the verify coaches, I think who finds criticism with two World Cups, if she gets a title people still complaining summer. Complain for sure. All right. Time to get to tomorrow's matches in group d but first US soccer stars like Tobin heath, Carli Lloyd maller. You, they never complained a why. The day we'll start with England Japan Argentina. And Scotland in that order in the group England Japan are through Argentina Scotland. That's where the interest really lies for me Kate Argentina wins therein because they've got the point one point Scotland needs to win and then maybe get some help. If you're listening to yesterday's podcast, you realize I got a little bit ahead of myself how so excited for group d I thought we had four games today. Yeah. I was four games four game or is. Instead of relying on you. Cliff nine. No, I know. So what do you think Argentina? Scotland for me this one comes down to the goalies, like carpenter Pereira who plays better. Really? Yeah. Yes. Why? Because you don't think Argentina contests carpenter. Yes. Yeah. Just you just disrespect Argentina's time night, disrespect you just said, they couldn't test carpenter had they tested anybody. No. Okay. Well, then you sack disrespect that okay? Fair enough. You don't think death is taken off. My bake island is that I have for television. Getting spiders, Argenta question Argentina. My question after the first game was a can they be that professional that was unbelievably well, organized bunker and not a bunker? That's like you know that really inadequate teams put together but it was just a beautiful bunker, Sweden, and twenty sixteen Munger out if they can do it again. And they did. And it worked until a didn't until they got pulled out. And the counter got countered is what happened end up losing that game. Beautiful Beth need service to Jodie Taylor. Who ended her fourteen month goal drought for England? So I think are going to have to get pulled out a little bit because they want to advance they wanna make a case for themselves. They wanna go forward for both on the field off the field reasons. And so two Scotland. So I think this is going to be a very exciting matchup. I don't think our in Argentina hasn't shows what the have going forward. So that's why I say that. And Scotland we know about these entities. So I wanna know if Kim little still has it so I feel like Argentina hasn't shown us what they have going forward because. They don't have it. Scotland hasn't shown us what they have going forward by choice. It's been conservative right there. Three best players have been kind of sitting back and not like little back. Caroline, we're hasn't been able to get on the ball as much as we'd like to see how tough is that. Like, when you when you've clearly, the team has clearly had an attitude and a decision to be defensive to be conservative. Now, all of sudden told all right? Go is it that easy to flip that switch? Yes, it's that easy to flip. That's really it is there, there is one time in particular, in an Olympic final where we knew Brazil was going to have all the ball, and we just we just defended with our lives away. And then Carly lead with typical Carli Lloyd moment, converts, it absolutely stinks playing in that system. Right. But you will do anything to win, you will sacrifice having fun or actually feeling like God. That's but you know what? There, there are performance is just how you frame it. Right. Subjectively is in a great attacking performance. No. But defensively heck that was one heck of an organized low block the obvious player with Scotland that we've. Focused on a lot is Kim little, and your complaint has been she's been playing to deep effectively. Not close enough to go. You gotta get closer to go in this game. Right. If you're Scotland, and you do one thing. It's Kim little because I feel like you can let you can let everybody else go. But if you let Kim little go than everybody else there will rise. Right. Right. She is one that a rising tide right sales. If we let her, I think she's just been so positioning disciplined and everytime, she gets pulled out a little bit. She range yourself back in and she limits, her ability to do what we normally can little do. So I don't know if it's just to have enough around, but I think when you have Aaron Cuthbert you have enough around, you at least to do something. And with Caroline, where I mean it's not the just fish lot Kim. Little combination that we used to see forever for the rain. But here in the United States when they both played for the NWF L, but I am so curious to see how good this team can be. But right now, if they don't, if those if Kim little does not play well and comfort does not play well this they're, they're going home. It's just down to those two. I mean even against Argentina. Well, I'm to go. They're just not as good as I had hoped. Right. Right. The rest of the team is good. I thought they I mean, that'll, it'll will be able to see. I, I thought they went really conservatives. We don't really know how good they are could be a great game plan Japan did this Japan. Bracketed they, they took one for the team in two thousand twelve to advance in the Olympics. They did that. It's interesting to me that you mentioned. And of course they were teammates make sense. Kim little unjust, fish lock. Feel like now with little playing in a World Cup fish lock takes the title of best player gotten in a world cost yet. See, so. So the other game then is in group d is England Japan. The top two teams in the group. I'm really, really curious about this Japanese team. They were so, so lifeless and against Argentina than against Scotland felt like they hit a gear that the Scottish simply could not contend with is this Japanese team good enough to beat to push this team Kate. Gosh, they're they're movement is enviable off the ball in that game against Scotland. They were pulling Scotland all over the place. It improve. They've gotten better each single half. So just matters. If they're going to go for it or if they're looking at the bracket and be like none. We want to be on that side. And so we see Japan dude in twenty twelve in which they purposely did not play their best players and came out not really trying to win a game in order to get on the right side of bracket that they thought they could win in advance and it worked for them. So there is nothing that makes me think that, yes, they're gonna show movement will know by their starting lineup. Who they put out if they put out a bunch of people to have less than two cabs amongst their starters? I'm exaggerating. I'm not being disrespectful. I just don't have their team sheet in front of me in the moment. But if they don't play don't start you a Bucci, that's assigned for me that this is a team that maybe is okay with going on the other side of the bracket. Yeah. And I'm looking at the two brackets right now. Right. If you the runners-up out of group, d you drop into the bracket, that would not have likely where we know it's going to have France likely the United States, and very potentially England. Right. Right. So I mean you know, you would being if you win this winter's group Dego in, but I think. There's a very definite strong bracket and weak bracket in this World Cup. I think it's, it's really setting up like that. You understand why Japan would wanna go the other route for me. I'm with you. I mean, this is all when you talk about Japan to me, it all comes down to tuck choices the managers choices right? Like Bucci start Nakajima. The number seven is a player who found to be like very dangerous in moments what role the sheep play. And then there's another player in this Japanese team that I think is really interesting. And that's Sakuma guy. It's a player that we've talked about before on this show. She's she plays for Leon. She's got the blue checkmark. Yup. She's for them more like a central midfielder. She's played centre back for in both roles. But a now with Japan, more of a centreback. Is she may be more useful to this team further up the field because she's so good? Sometimes I'm like, man, I got her at centreback. I think they need her more in the back though, in, they don't have a lot of experience on team anymore. She's playing next to debutante. So I think you need players that can solidify the back more than any other place. So you want them centrally down the spine of the field is where you want your most experienced players, and they'd be more dangerous, if she was in the middle because I don't think she's got the legs to do the middle at the level that she did her and her at a best is when she was with Sawa, and she was definitely the six and Saleh was the ten or right. She would just she would just cover so much ground in clean up everything and shield that back line. So I don't think she's as good as that. And again, I think they need more on the back if England losses game they would potentially in fact they would dropped a second in the group and they would avoid van the hard in air quotes side of the bracket. Obviously you're gonna get to World Cup. You're going to have to earn it. What are we looking for from this English team in their third for performance que? They won the first one to two one over Scotland they beat Argentina, one nothing. There was maybe a good hat there in the in the match against Scotland. But I don't think we've necessarily seen this England team yet had full flight. What are they gotta do in this match together? I think you're gonna see Squadra tation I'm under joy Taylor. Ellen White's going to start up top two very different types of forwards. He is playing a lot of different players. But again, it's all about Francophobe, who was able to unlock Beth made on that left hand side committed Fender. And then pushed it out wide. Then hit that one time bending in cross behind the backline van Kirby is key for them, and how they play it gives them a different dimension. You know they're strong in the back. There Cinemax are a little bit casual at times and have gaps and concentration. It'll be interesting to see how they line up and again expect the four three three four, five one type of thing. But the one player that has been consistently positive for this. Team. Besides your right hand side. Right. Like bronze and Akita parish there on believable has been Scott and Jill Scott. The number eight tall player. Covers a ton of grouchy plays the eight role as well. Because their numbers, usually go with their positions. I think that's always interesting, like Kay your to you play too. Right. So she's an eight and cheese. Getting more minutes than I thought I'd be interested, if he puts Lucy bronze at center, mid teen, Greenland, which everyone was like, what is he doing? They'll never like what? Your best player. And she. Or pear starts Oregon, or tiny dougans healthy starter. That hasn't been starting dude an injury to her thigh. So I'm curious how this place out. Embarrass has had a knee injury. So maybe he'll arrester I'm telling you a group d has a lot of moving parts as we head to that last say you hope that when you get to these last days of group play, you've got to matchups that matter and redo this England, Japan game is going to matter a lot for seating and this Scotland Argentina game. It's a knockout game a day early. Right. This is a round of thirty two game. If you want to call it that even though there's only twenty four teams in this turns around thirty two game for these two countries because they win they are through to the round of sixteen art all week. We've been talking about the hashtag ask seven came. Answer to your questions. But I promise we're going to do that next right after the break, I k we've been putting this off because we've just been running way over with these shows. But we gotta get to some of these awesome. Ask seven. Kate suggestions are sending him in. Yes. Like do we got so many submission? It's been like unrequited love like we haven't been answering, you know, we've been thinking about them and to be honest. They've been informing me a little bit as I make these show run down. Oh, what do people want us to talk about? And even if we have an address your specific tweet, you may have heard kind of answer, the question, thrill show. So I hope people have picked up on that. There's many of them and some of them I'll say for later in this World Cup. But one that jumped out to me was this from Paul Hristo? He says, if you could pick eleven women on current form to make your ideal team. Who would you choose what formation would you play? I'm not gonna make you do that. Now, don't worry. I'm on on on. Six okay. That's set. About to do each day. Sure, we do how we're gonna we're gonna say that one for later, because I think, and maybe we'll put it out to other people on Twitter, their suggestions. But I love that one from Paul. Here's the one we'll do today, and it came from our friend Halley on Sunday. She says, do you think Davidson obvious speaking about tear now performance today, including contributions on set pieces leads to more minutes for her this Turney? What do you think? I didn't see that. I haven't thought you down before why hard it, but I don't know if I really remember while you think about it. Let me give you guys some, some background than on, on Davidson. She kind of came into this team out of nowhere. In fact, it was January two thousand eighteen I did a game in San Diego against Denmark, and she was called in that camp. And she was like the only college player and that always makes you kind of be like, oh, hey look, there's a college player on the roster. That's not something you always see she just finished sophomore year at Stanford and Kate, you'll know this when we do, those ESPN broadcast, we get like the day before the game. We get to sit down with the manager. So you sit down with no recording devices, no cameras just a chat. And of course, everybody wanted to know about, like, hey, what's up with is Davidson, like is this just just giving her a sniff of the camp or whatever what's going on? And Jill Ellis was so high on her to the point where those of us in the meeting walked out. Like this players got a shot at not just like making the World Cup team. But starting so in that game against Denmark, she starts, and then the rest of two thousand eighteen she basically becomes the starting centerback for this US team in she believes Cup tournament of nations, which are the two biggest they'll play in that year. Their six matches. She starts five of them in those terms, both, by the way tournaments that the US one, right? Which are again, the big competitions in the year. So at that point, you're thinking, like alright she's made a case. I don't know if she's taking Becky Sauerbrun out of the lineup or have you doll, I think, probably more likely Kemper, even though she's playing with doll Kemper for a lot of eighteen cassava room was hurt, but she's going to have to have a say in all this, then she goes back to Stanford in the fall, breaks ankle, tackle, Carolina, should that girl should be red carded two years, disgusting. So she lost I think three months then at that point comes back in his able to make the team. But maybe doesn't have the same shot at the at the center BAC spas. She's got a real interesting career with youth national teams. She'd been cut from you. Twenty teams she'd been moved around. She wore the number ten at Stanford, she'd actually been more of a central midfielder. I think with you national teams before finally getting moved to centreback. So that's kind of her history. But I wonder do you think we'll see more of her in this moment? Maybe what are the what are the things that would have to happen for her to get more minutes because he's clearly not in the starting plans now, her service is what makes her so good. Her ability to connect plays, Becky Salman has come out and said, she'll be the best player. One of the best players in the national team moving forward at centerback you so good. On telling you people are that high honor until she got her. And then she just hasn't found her footing and shit huge opportunity in February two like own that centreback spot, and take it from doll Kemper. I thought and she played really poorly in that she believes really poorly, but they also got out class by every team in that tournament. I in my opinion, I think they played well so she, she went down the pecking order. I don't see you're getting a ton of minutes unless they decide to go with. Three five two, and they need Juliet's in the midfield because otherwise that's going to pull. Juilliard centreback. Right. And they'll go Becky Sauerbrun Erz Kemper, and if they wanna push done up if they want to push people up in play differently like if one like repeal or heath gets hurt. If each decided tinker things you could play three centrebacks and that could be one ear three very interesting. I mean it's a player with a long future for this national team. You look at our age, and you look at our position anything man, you know, if you get a centreback that's in there, if you get a muffing like nineteen ninety nine. Centreback you might have a centreback for a decade. Yeah. You might have a decade. All right. She's KMart Sebastian saw, thanks so much for listening. Thanks so much for sending in the questions at the hashtag, ask and Kate, we just got that one from Halley but keep sending them in Cato. Keep putting out the tweets. We'll keep taking them in working them into this podcast. Thanks for listening to this Tuesday, June eighteenth special edition of ESPN AFC's coverage of the two thousand nineteen women's World Cup from France.
