"sean tate" Discussed on The Bill Simmons Podcast

"Leakers. This is probably easy. Oh, I guess if the rookie, it isn't. If JAJS is not available, so their seven would be LeBron, AD, Reeves, Rui, Vincent, Vanderbilt. And then there's two spots left for Torian Prince, who I think we both love for that team. I can't wait to see him on a good team, even if it is the Lakers, so I hate. Then you got Russell and Hayes, you got Reddish and then you have Max Christie, who's only 20 years old and everybody really likes him. And I think if all the guys I listed, I think Christie would be the one that just immediately got taken, so you almost might have to keep him. We're going to come off as the biggest Max Christie guys here for a couple of minutes. This actually isn't easy for the Lakers because the reason you probably did the D'Angelo-Russell deal, which is 17.3 million this year, and then a player option for 19 million, is they need that for a trade. Yeah. Well, combined with Rui, it equals Kyrie, which is the all-time red flag math. You just add up the contracts. It's like, oh, that's almost exactly Kyrie's number. Cool. So they all love Christie out here, right? You've probably heard the same stuff. He's good. Yeah. No, I think they think he's a real guy. So would you expose... The leaving clay unprotected argument is different than the D'Angelo-Russell one because I think I'd feel better about like, ah, I don't think they're going to take D'Angelo-Russell and then have him be the point guy for the team, like the stuff that you're supposed to do right. And then D'Angelo-Russell is running your basketball team. I think it's well established how I feel about that. But then can you tell LeBron like, hey, we exposed our best trade chip for Max Christie? It's a really tough one because they signed that Russell deal specifically to trade him in February. And I think even Russell, he waved stuff. He was just like, dude, here's an extra 7 million. You're a trade asset for us this year. It's more money than you're going to make. And he was like, great. Maybe you'll keep me. So if you expose him, I do agree that he would probably get picked. But I don't want to lose Christie. So I guess the question for me is, do you value Prince more than Russell on a team that's trying to win? I think they need Prince. I think he's going to be really important for them this year. So you're saying, all right, so then give me the two of the three that you're protecting if you're the Lakers between Prince, Christie and Russell. Prince and Christie for me. So you'd leave Russell exposed. I would. I'm okay with it because I wasn't even like nuts about signing him anyway. And I'm only doing it to trade him. And now I lose the possibility to trade him. You only are keeping him if you know you have a trade in February. And maybe they do, or maybe they think they have a chance. So then at that point, I guess you leave Prince exposed. But you could always trade Rui if it was a guy you really liked and you're trying to figure out how to get the contracts. And they've got a couple of the minimums with Reddish and Jackson Hayes. All right. So what's our final answer? See, the audience is enjoying this. They're like, man, I didn't think this was going to be fun, but now I'm involved in a Christie versus Prince argument. This is great. This is actually, I think it should be like pick up hoops where every other call that's debated, you just all turn like, all right, we got the last one. You get this one. It's the only way to be efficient instead of watching arguments while guys smoke cigarettes for 10 minutes. So I pushed back so hard on the clay thing. You can be the tiebreaker on this one. Then I get the next one. I'm going to leave Russell exposed. All right. Detroit. They're keeping Cade, the Thompson twin, Ivy. I think they keep Wiseman. Stewart, they just signed. Jaylen Duren. And after that, I don't know. Oh, Monty Morris I had just because I think he's a trade asset, I think they keep him. So maybe that's seven. So I had one spot left for Bagley and Burks and they're going to expose him. Burks is an expiring. Detroit could also do the thing where they just protect seven and they're like have at it. No, I don't think they would do that. Because did you mention Livers? I think they like him. Okay. So we'll make Livers the eight. That's easy. All right. That's good. The Knicks Brunson, Randall, Barrett, Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson, DDV quickly. And then that last spot comes down to Grimes, Hartenstein or McBride. And I had Grimes down on the initial list, but if you want to make the Hartenstein case, I'm here for it. Because I think he gets picked in five seconds. Yeah. I protected Hartenstein. All right. But they're in a spot. They're going to lose somebody in this, whether it's Grimes, Miles McBride, Jericho Sims. I imagine Fournier is not going to be in demand. Fournier available. Yeah. But it's Randall Brunson, RJ, Mitchell Robinson, Hart, DiVincenzo quickly and Hartenstein. Oklahoma City is the most screwed in this gimmick. I thought they were going to be way worse off than they were, but go ahead. Oh, I guess if you're going to take out Wallace, what about this Michic? Michic? Michic? Yeah. This point guard? Yeah. I think they would protect him. But we're saying they have to protect him. He's not like a typical rookie. Because they brought him over. Okay. So we got SGA, Giddy, Chet Holmgren, Jalen and Jalen, Dort, Michic. And then that eighth spot comes down to Williams, Poku, Dang. Oh, it'd probably be Mann. Garuba, they like, and Isaiah Joe. I'm guessing it's Mann. I don't know. What do you think? I'll let you defer. You watched more OKC than I did this year. I'm probably a little too high on Usman, Dang, but I don't think that they would leave him unprotected. They took him that high. He was somebody that you thought, wow, as he put it together his last year in the Australian league, you could see that he was doing some things. So he really fits their profile. So I just don't think he would be left unprotected. So it's SGA, Dort, Chet, Giddy, both Williams, Dang and Michic. So that means it's Bertons, who's got a big number, Oladipo, Kenrich Williams, Garuba, who I loved reading. Some of the stuff with Hoops Hype, not always my favorite, but when you get a nugget like Danilo Gallinari telling some international newspaper that he's going to circle every Celtics date. I loved it. And you're like, what the fuck? Why are you mad at the Celtics? And then there was another moment where Garuba was telling people that he was like, you know, I was in a bad spot previously and they were like, all right, yeah, no problem. So anyway, I had Isaiah Joe available. Yep. Got him, Tiff. So Poku's available. Okay. So we'll have a top four pick in this draft. Poku could be the face of a franchise. Just put him right in the poster. Put him on the poster. I guess if we're saying rookies are not eligible, then Kobe cannot be picked, but it's Young Murray, Okongwoo, Griffin, Capella, Hunter, Bogdanovich. And then that eighth spot is either Sadiq Bey or Jalen Johnson. I'll let you pick. I put Bey down to be protected, but it'd be tough. I didn't like Jalen Johnson out of Duke. I thought there were still moments in the playoffs where he looked pretty scared, but when the moments were good, there was some really good stuff there. So he would be picked if he's left unprotected. And I think Bey wins that tiebreaker. Sacramento has a seven of Fox, Sabonis, Keegan Murray, Herter, Monk, Harrison Barnes. So they just brought back in Davion Mitchell. And that eighth spot is between Vezinkov, Lyles, Duarte. It seems like they like Vezinkov. So I'm assuming that would be the guy they protected, right? They were all excited about bringing him over. Yeah. He's a big dude. The three-point shooting has been pretty solid. And I think he falls into the Meachich category here. Yep. Last team is Utah. Wait, wait, wait. So unprotected for Sacramento would be who? Lyles, Duarte, Alex Len, Nurlans-Noel, Kessler-Edwards? Yes. Utah is tough because it's got marketing, Kessler, Clarkson. Oh, I guess George doesn't count. Okay. And neither does Hendricks. So therefore it would be marketing, Kessler, Clarkson, and Agbaji. And then we'd have to go Collins, Sexton, Olenek. I guess it's not as tough if we're taking the rookies. It's not that hard. Horton, Tucker. Okay. All right. They're unprotected just to be it's your seven, Chris Dunn, Shimonich. Horton, Tucker. Yeah. You learned a lot from LeBron. They can do that thing. All right. We're going to take a break and then we're going to do the draft. But before we take a break, do you want to be Seattle or do you want to be Vegas in this expansion draft? I would love to be Seattle. I fought hard for them in 2007 and 08, and I'm happy to hand Vegas to you. I'll take Vegas, but you have way more of a history of Vegas than I do. So you want Seattle? I'm happy to defer. That's fine. I'll take Vegas. You push for Seattle. I do have a Yellow Sonics t-shirt though that's kicking around somewhere. It's amazing what t-shirts you discover when you move. All right. Coming back, the draft. All right. It's time. It's the 2023 expansion draft that will never happen in August, but we don't care because there's nothing else to talk about. What do you want us to... You want us to have a Dame Lord, Miami conversation? It's not happening. I thought that deal was done. Nobody cares. I forgot. I forgot they figured out the deal a while ago. Do you have a name? Wait, wait. Do you have a team name? We're the Seattle SuperSonics. We're back. You're right. You're right. What are you going to be? Has anyone ever had an emotion? The Vegas regrets? The Vegas regrets? Right. And their mascot's just a guy with short sleeve button down, balding, bags under his eyes, reading a credit card statement. I love the Vegas regrets. That's funny. He just goes around, high fives kids, hugs them. It's just so good to see you again. I would buy a Vegas regrets basketball t-shirt right now. All right. The Vegas regrets are on the clock with the first pick. Who do you have? I almost didn't want the first pick. I'll take the first pick if you don't want it. I'll take it. No, this is history. I'm going to take Quinton Grimes. Okay. Quinton Grimes off the board. How do you feel about that? Good contract. What's he at? Good contract. He's still on a rookie deal. Yeah. Good asset. Can probably flip him. Would your expansion strategy be assets you can flip or guys you can build around or both? Because I would be in the assets. If I would just emulate what Presti would do in this situation, I think Presti would just be, I want assets. I want picks. I'll take guys you don't want. Give me a pick back. All that stuff. I would be down for all of it, but I don't know that I'm going to completely tell you my strategy here on draft day. Very fair. Very fair. That's what Costner would do. Do you like how I tried to get you to tell me your strategy? It's very Danny Ainge of you. Seattle SuperSonics on the clock. This is already tough. I don't like the board. Dude, you are not going to like the board. Ask Ringer to not do a breakout graphic of expansion draft teams because no one's going to go through the exercise. They're just going to look and be like, are you serious? These teams are terrible. We're breaking the rules. We're doing it after the off season. I can't wait. I can't wait until I pick. I can't wait for your pick right now. I'm going to take Kenridge Williams. Okay. He's off the board. What's his salary? Four years, 27 million. Basically six a year. 29 years old. I feel like I could flip them. Who do you got? Did we say Jalen Johnson's available then? Yes. All right. I'll take Jalen Johnson. Jalen Johnson. Nice pick. I'm going to take Xavier Tillman. Great value. I like my team already. I got some NBA players. You have Quentin Grimes, Jalen Johnson. I have Kenridge Williams and Xavier Tillman. Okay. That means... Kenrick Williams or Kenrich Williams? I always screw this up with Kenrich. I got it. You almost want it to be Kenrick because... Yeah, Kenrich. Okay. I don't think anybody does. Here's what's interesting. Because it's a two team draft, does that mean I can't take another Nick? No. Does that mean you can take a Nick? Nope. Once a team loses a guy, they're out of the draft. All right. I was almost going to... I might've had... If there was no rule like that, I may have gone three or four Nicks just to get started. Sims to McBride to Grimes down the lane. They lost their guy. Okay. So what did we land on with Memphis? Well, see, wait, they just... You took Xavier Tillman. So because you took Tillman, I can't take Aldama or La Ravia or Roddy, the body. Nope. Can't do it. The other expansion room is motherfucking you right now. They're like, seriously, of all the Memphis options, that's what you went with and now none of those guys are available? We're going to take Tillman to lunch tomorrow and be like, look, man, our whole offense is pick and pop with you, baby. You are a 2010 guy. This is happening. Okay. I got to go back to my larger board here. I was thinking about taking Thanasis for the Lakers or Heat. You like that? Too soon. I couldn't believe Miami didn't give him like 5 million a year. The full mid-level? Yeah. The full mid-level for like four years. Or they would have been when they get it. I don't know the latest numbers. Okay. All right. All right. I'm on the clock. Turning into the Vikings here. I know. Well, because we kind of left a few things. So does that mean Gary Payton was our option for Golden State? You can take them right now. See you on the Vegas Regrets. All right. I know what I wanted to do. I figured you would go wing heavy. No, I still have a theory that's still in play here. It doesn't matter. That Xavier Tillman thing sort of fucked me a little bit here. So you're taking Gary Payton? Well, I'm going to need somebody that I know can play, which even though my team's going to stink, I'll take Gary Payton because that way, at least contractually, it's not that big of a deal. I don't love him away from Golden State necessarily, but I'll take him just because I think there's a good chance that somebody else will want him if he stays healthy. So there you go. I'm going to take Jose Alvarado. You can have him. You just did it again. You ruined all the other Pelicans options because you're taking the... You know what I'm doing? I'm building a culture, Rossello. Guys from overachieving winning programs. Alvarado, you know who's going to love Alvarado? My fans in Seattle. We are screaming at you in our draft room. Wow, who would you have taken? Okay, but just to back up here, of the final New Orleans options, all right, we said Nance would be protected, and then that left Kyra Lewis, Najee, Alvarado, and EJ Laddell, and you decided to take Alvarado, and now I can't take any of the other guys. You cannot. Sorry. Kyra Lewis, man. Kyra Lewis has been available for a year and a half. He's been hurt. He's out of the rotation. You can trade for him right now. I guarantee the Vegas Regrets could acquire him for a second round pick. Yeah, but I'd rather just not had to go through the negotiation stuff. That's all. All right, now who else would you... I can't believe you did back-to-back teams where you fucked it up for me. You should have taken guys from those teams. Delos staring at you now. That's the antithesis of what I would want to do. So is Sam Houser. Kevin Porter Jr. Probably wouldn't do it, but I think he'd be protected anyway. His contract's really weird anyway with the staggered guarantees. I actually had... Oh, I guess we didn't do Houston. There's a Porter versus Joc Landau versus Tate. Which one of those guys becomes protected? I thought they would leave Porter unprotected. He's got a weird contract where you can get out of it at the end of the year anyway, but why would that team want Porter? If I'm a new expansion team, I'm not giving Kevin Porter Jr. the basketball and saying, it's yours. This is your team. You're our number one option. Even though he's really talented, I just wouldn't want to do it. Let's double check here with Houston then, because we didn't go through it. Well, Houston has Van Vliet, Jabari, Thompson, Whitmore, Jalen Green, Sengoon, and Eason as the guaranteed seven. And then that eighth spot is either Porter or Landau. Or you could take your guy, Jeff Green. Culture? No doubt. No doubt. I protected Tate and left Landau, Holiday, and Green unprotected. Let's say that then. That's fine. I can't take Tate, because I love myself some Jay Sean Tate, probably too much. Yeah, you're right. They would protect him. He's got a good contract, Tate. I'm going to hold off on that, and I'm going to go ahead and take Rubio. Rubio? Rubio. Interesting. What's his money? Two years left, 12 and a half million this year, and then it's 10 plus million guaranteed. I'm already on the books for a little bit more than I thought I would be this and into it. That's fine. But if we go through Cleveland, it's Garland, it's Mitchell, it's Allen, it's Mobley, Le Vert protected, Struce protected, Acoro protected, and I protected Niang. I just think there's worse teammates you could have for a younger group. But the thing is about culture and all this stuff, all of these guys are going to be replaced in three years. So what are you really building? You're selling uniforms and hopefully some tickets. For Dallas, if Lively can't be protected, Kleber would be their eighth guy, and they would have Luca, Kyrie, Grant Williams, Hardy, Kleber. Kleber is definitely protected. Josh Green, Curry, and O-Max. So that means Dwight Powell is available. Just wanted to mention that. Right, but O-Max is on the rookie thing. Oh, I guess O-Max. So that Dwight Powell wouldn't be available then. So that Dallas becomes harder then. Okay, but here's what I did. I'll run through a quick. Luca, Kyrie, Haraway Jr., Grant Williams, who's loving it already. Kleber, Josh Green without question. I can't believe Seth Curry gets a one year, $4 million deal with the second year not guaranteed in today's NBA, but that's what happened. That was awesome. And then I think they'd protect Jaden Hardy over JaVale, Rashawn Holmes, Powell, and Exum. I agree. So for Orlando, Powell, O'Franz, Black. Oh, Black's not. That screwed up my board. So Anthony. All right, so they don't really have anybody. Orlando was a little easier than I thought it would be too. Do you want me to run through what I have for Orlando? Well, who'd you have for Toronto? Because Toronto was Siakam Barnes, Inenobi, Pertl, Boucher, Precious, Koloko, and either Trent, Shruder, McDaniels, or Flynn as the eighth. Probably Flynn would be the eighth, right? I don't know. It's Siakam, Pertl, OG, Trent, Barnes, Shruder, Precious, Boucher, Boucher. I don't know why. So do you have Trent as a protected for them? I do. If you don't like the contract, do you think they'd leave it? Well, if Trent's the one who's protected, then- That would leave Thaddeus Young, AKA Thadgic Johnson, which I found on Basketball Reference, had never heard that. Otto Porter, Jalen McDaniels, who disappeared for the Sixers, Malachi Flynn, AKA Malichi Flynn on one NBA league pass broadcast this year. Garrett Temple, Jeff Dowton, Koloko. You know what? I'm going to take Jalen McDaniels. I think he was on a bad team in Charlotte, gets traded to Philly mid-season, gets thrown into the fire, is not ready to play in some of those games because he doesn't have the experience, and now is a distressed asset and we're going to rebuild him here in Seattle. So that's my eighth pick. So I have Kenrich Williams, Tillman, Alvarado, Jalen McDaniels, and the Vegas Regrets are on the clock. Okay. Give me Duarte. I was looking at him. That's a good pick. He was out of the rotation. He had some injuries, obviously, as well, but I fucking loved his draft stuff, man. And he shot, I think, like 39% his rookie year and there were different people involved with it. So meaning the guard rotation with the Pacers and it just was between his injuries and the lack of minutes and everything, I don't know that his numbers last year reflect who he actually is. So I'll take a shooter. A Detroit guy needs to go. I like the pick. A Detroit guy needs to go here and it's between Bagley and Burks and Killian Hayes. It can finally happen for you, man. You and Bags. It's not going to be Bags. I'm going to take a flyer on Killian Hayes, who I got to say... You're laughing. I got to say... He had a couple moments last year where I was like, all right. Did he? Yeah. Yeah. A couple moments. Give me a moment. Give me a Killian Hayes moment where you said, I see it. Eye test. Flicking around on league pass. Like, all right. I liked how he ran that high screen there. I'm just betting on pedigree. Lottery pick. They take a point guard like a year later. Weird situation. Lots of players. They had 40 big guys. Give them a whirl in Seattle. You're on the clock. Okay. I can't believe we didn't take Poku. I kind of regret that now. Well, wait a minute. Has anybody been taken? No, I took an OKC guy. They're off the table. You took all the Sacramento guys. Oh, that's right. Because you also took Trey Mann out of the mix and Poku. This is an unbelievable run of... You eliminated all the good players from OKC, Memphis, and New Orleans. You took the Knicks. I was there to take Hartenstein. Hartenstein. All right. Who do you got? We're now in D-low range just for the record. Fair. Fair. I'll do this because at least I know he can play and the number still isn't that bad. Give me Dwight Powell. Yep. I like it. What I've done is I have like 30 million in three guys. Good value. Not even. I'm like 25 million with the three guys. Then I have room to work here because I still want to come in under the cap. If I don't trade for anybody, all these guys get raises. They get expansion into the ear checks. I am going to go with the guy that I've liked for a while. He's still on a rookie deal. I think he's got some talent. His name is Zeke Naji, and all the nuggets are now off the board. That's fine. We can adjust. You like Zeke? I don't hate him. Malone's not going to play a lot of younger guys. They didn't need to. The rotation got even shorter. That's why I think it's interesting that Booth takes three rookies in, and they're all talking about like, hey, we love these guys. They can all play. They can do all these different things, and they're more seasoned. That's what we like here in Denver. Then I'd be like, I can't wait to watch all of them never play. Can we go over the Denver question though? Because I think this is a good way to break up this part of the draft. Well, Denver had Jokic, Murray, Gordon, Porter, KCP, Braun. I had Holiday as their seventh because they seemed like they wanted to play. Christian Braun's another off-season pronunciation. I don't blame you. Did I say Braun or Brown? You said Braun. I meant Brown. Yeah, everybody did. Would you leave Porter Jr. unprotected with four years and 150 million left fully guaranteed? I can't. It's a good question. I did think about it, you can't because you have this window with Jokic where you have the best player in the world that is prime. Porter had really good moments in the playoffs. You probably can't because then again, it comes down to like, okay, cool. It's off the books and his back and the medical concerns and all that, but then what? Now what are we doing? You just want a title. I think you're right on that one. I do like Hunter Tyson though. I don't know if his contract is as bad anymore when we see some of these numbers coming in. It's 33, 36, 38, 40 in the last year for the next four. Look, not great. I'm not celebrating it, but when you see Jalen's going to be at 70 in year five, I just don't think those numbers are that daunting. Fair. We're going to see some crazy contracts. Who do you have next? We've each taken six people. I'm going to start digging into my old – I know I don't have to worry about it. Give me Josh Minot. Who do you want? Josh Minot. You all right? I don't know who that is. He's the incredibly, incredibly skinny dude that has all sorts of skills. He's on Timberwolves. I guess I could have taken him a little bit later. I think this is another good segue. I never saw him play one minute of basketball last year. You didn't see him in the summer league at all? No. Oh, okay. All right. Look, there's just something about him. Now we're letting some of the area scouts get more influence here going, what if this guy put it together? I don't think it's a certainty they would leave – that they would protect Rudy Gobert. This is exciting right now for me. This is going to be the most exciting pick of the draft. This will be the breakout. Okay. But can we touch on the Rudy thing for a second? Whether you lead him out? Right. You and I would, but I don't think they can. That might be the right answer. But if you – You can't because then it's like you're just admitting we've made the most damaging trade of the last 25 years. I also – I have a zag. I'm glad you're sitting down. They probably did the best job against Denver last year in the playoffs out of the four teams. Like they gave those big guys – nobody gave Jokic like a shitload of trouble, but he kind of had to work the hardest against them. And I have to go through Jokic to win the title, and I want size. I want big dudes. And Minnesota has him and Nas and Towns. And I don't know, you can talk yourself into it if that's the team you have to go through. Did you see the stuff where he was shooting threes in the summer? There was a video – Honestly, I would like all summer content of big guys doing shit they'll never, ever do in a game. I would like to be blocked from all of it moving forward. Don't go to Hoopsite then. And I know 12-year-olds run a lot of these breakout accounts, but seeing a seven-footer at LA Fitness pull up from NBA 3 after going between his legs will never do it in an NBA game and then being like, this dude's been putting in the work this summer. And you're like, all right, cool. Anyway, if Minnesota had a tougher decision for the eighth guy to be protected, I think it'd be a real conversation. Go Bears, 41 million, 44 million. Player option for 47 million. He'll be 33 in his last year. Probably pick that one up. So that would leave you with Kat Conley, Edwards, Nas Reed, Kyle Anderson, Alexander Walker, Janet McDaniels. And then you'd have Shaq and Mina covered there, or you could go Wendell Moore if you liked him. That would have to be like a camp thing where they're around him all the time. They're like, oh, we don't want to leave this guy. But you're probably right. So I'm not going to spend any more time on it that they would feel like they couldn't do it. Because there's also the part, like imagine today's world, today's generation of NBA players, like his documentary starts 10 years from now and be like, they left me exposed in the 2023 expansion draft. It's like the Steph Curry draft. Underrated. The Steph Curry story. He was the sixth pick in the draft. This is like one of the most famous college players in the last 15 years. Nobody believed in me. LeBron, I'm not even supposed to be here. Dude, you're fucking 6'9 and you move like no one we've ever seen. Yeah. You're the biggest short thing that's come into the league since I've been alive. Ben Simmons. My next pick is going to surprise you, stun you. Ben Simmons. I know what it is. Oh my God. Ben Simmons. Okay. Let's go through Brooklyn. So you're right. He's unprotected in this exercise. Bridges, Cam Johnson, Claxton, Phinney Smith, O'Neill, whatever. Whoever they... Sharp, Cam Thomas, whoever, but they're leaving Ben Simmons unprotected, hoping somebody takes him. And he's definitely unprotected. And guess what? I just took him. We're bringing him to Seattle. We're going to introduce him to Gus Williams. All the Sonics fans. We're going to rebuild you, Ben Simmons. You're going to be the face of our franchise. And also I got to spend $89 million. I need one expensive guy. So why not Ben Simmons? There we go. Are you serious? Are you doing this for the video? I am not doing it for the video. I think if I'm an expansion team, what's the worst thing that could happen? I want to be bad anyway. Right? I want to be bad. I want to have a bottom five team. I want to take flyers on guys who have talent. I want to take assets that I feel like I can flip and I want to have a certain identity. And with Simmons, is there a 5% chance he might put it back together? He's like 25. This is over? Other than cocaine stories and shit like that, there's no version of this ever in the history of the league where somebody just completely lost it at age 24, who was an all NBA guy. And I know the odds are against it, but if I'm an expansion team, what do I care? I'll roll the dice with Ben Simmons. But I would tell the Nets, I'll take Ben Simmons, but can I get a first in like 2029? Or float me three seconds down the road or something. I would try to get something from them, but I would want him in this. Wow. I would want him in this. He would never have taken... No way. No way. I don't want him around. I don't want to see his videos being posted, speaking of videos in the off season, and then not playing. His whole, the JJ Reddick podcast episode alone would make me not take him. Here's the thing about football players and basketball players. When they hit their late 20s, there is a lot of track record of guys either figuring out, maturing, just kind of putting shit together. And maybe it happens with him. I think it's worth the gamble. All right, you're up. The Vegas regrets. You just took a guy that I've literally never heard of, and I follow basketball for a living. I wasn't on the Minnesota Summer League scene this year. I was really doubling down on that one. I'm just trying to go for it. I have a list of players who'd be like, hey, I always kind of liked that guy. What happened to him? Kyra Lewis. He would have been on the Vegas regrets. He didn't take fucking Alvarado. Give me Dalen Terry, Chicago Bulls. I like that one. I just always liked his game. Yeah. That's a good one. I had him. He was probably my next pick. He was on your radar? Yeah. You're not seeing the Alvarado thing. I'm an expansion team. I need somebody that's going to go to the fucking malls in Seattle with my jersey on and throw little balls out to people who's going to do interviews, who's going to be just like the fan favorite immediately, especially if I have Ben Simmons on my team. I need a fan favorite. Right. The Alvarado pick now makes way more sense. Thank you. You're trying to counter whatever vibes you have him wearing civvies, game 41. I need a shooter who has trade value and it's Sam Hazard time. I knew that was the biggest lock. I can't believe it took so long. I wasn't going to take him. I almost took him two rounds ago, but I knew I could get him right around here. Cheap contract. He's played in some games. Sneaky, decent defender. He's gotten better every year, and I look forward to seeing Ben Simmons find him in the corner for corner threes. I have Kenridge Williams, Tillman, Alvarado, McDaniels, Killeen Hayes, Zeke Nagy, Ben Simmons, and Sam Hazard. That's a pretty good basketball team. You have Quentin Grimes, Jalen Johnson, Gary Payton, Ricky Rubio, Chris Duarte, Dwight Powell, the Minnesota Summer League legend, and Dale and Terry. How many do you want to go here? Do you want to go 12, 15? We're going 15. We're drafting one from every team. We have not had a Laker yet. No, we haven't. I'm going to just let you know, even though my approach would tell you that Cam Reddish, be like, hey, what happened to that guy, baby? No, we're good. Not going to happen. It's funny that we argued for five minutes about whether they would leave D'Lo unprotected, and we've just taken 16 players and he hasn't been picked yet. You knew I wasn't taking them. I'm not. I know. I can just get them later. I'm excited about it. You could take them 16. Should we talk about Miami? The reason I bring this up is for one specific reason. All right, so my protectors, I have Butler Bam Hero, Caleb Martin, Jovic, who's apparently fucking awesome. Actually, that's kind of a Lillard joke, but I like Jovic before the draft. I like Jovic too. I don't think he should be the centerpiece of a Dame Lillard trade, but I like him. That's kind of a joke. That's kind of a joke. They actually have to kind of protect Lowry, right, to keep the money for potential trade? The thing is, yeah, they do. I had them leaving Kevin Love and Highsmith unprotected. Okay, so if Highsmith is unprotected, I'm taking him right now. The problem is if it's Butler Bam, Martin, Hero, Jovic, Duncan Robinson, Kyle Lowry, there's still an eight spot for them, and they probably protect Highsmith or Love, right? So we have to decide what makes more sense for them. I had Highsmith protected. I worked it to go, all right, this is another one of the Miami heat culture development guys, and if I think there's somebody who I liked some of his minutes, and I liked a lot of Highsmith's minutes last year- You and I both liked him, yeah. So then he's protected. We can't manipulate. I had a moment late last night where I was like, just fucking get Precious Ochoa unprotected and get your dude. And then I was like, no, I can't break the rules of the game. I had him unprotected because I thought we were counting rookies, but since we aren't, I think he has to be protected. They don't have enough guys. So it's probably Kevin Love for that team. Yeah, and it's not a ton of money, so we'll be okay.

"Just refresh for anybody who doesn't know. If you give a guy more than 50,000 guaranteed, you can't then put him on your G league team. Right. Because it's kind of like circumventing the G league. So with that. So yeah, so my guess is we're not going to probably get a pretty good chunk of a guarantee here with Toronto and it's going to be a real open competition for the last couple of roster spots. On the 15 man opening night roster for Toronto. Yeah, we should note for anybody who hasn't seen hustle over on Netflix. First of all, go watch it, but Beau Cruz is not really what his name is watch O herding girl nice. There's some people that are probably confused right now. But who's boat Bruce? I still contend that he needs to just change his name to Bo Cruz and just go with it. And which challenge? That's right. That's right. We need to make that happen. Honestly, if you haven't watched it, if you like our show, you'll clearly like basketball or your massive Trevor lane fans. And that's why you're tuning in. So like go watch, go watch hustle. It was fun. There were a couple parts. It was like, that's not how that works. Right. But that's okay. Let's put that aside. They did pretty good. It was a lot of fun. You do the same thing for draft day. You do the same thing for all the other sports. It's good. It's definitely worth checking out. There's this, oh, oh wait, I'm sorry. We can't talk about this one. We don't talk about Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno. The rocket signed Bruno Fernando. So I know Keith, you had something you wanted to mention on this in terms of the decisions that the rockets have to make more than just they sign Bruno Fernando. Yeah, so Houston is in a very interesting spot. Not only have they drafted a ton of guys in the last couple of years what was it for first rounders last year if I remember correctly, right? It was Josh Christopher, usman garuba, Albert shingun, and of course Jalen Greene, as the highlight player to that class. But then this year they drafted jabari Smith, Atari Easton and Thai Thai Washington. So that's 7 players. It's roughly half of your roster drafted in the last two years. But they did a four for one trade for Christian wood. This off season where we brought in Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, marquise Chris and bob and Mariano veg. In that trade. So basically, you have a full roster worth the guys here and they still had guys like Eric Gordon, Kenya, Martin junior, Kevin Porter, junior, David Noah, Jay Sean Tate, who they just resigned. So Houston right now, they're sitting in a little bit of an interesting spot.

"When cap space do you have left if LeBron signs that extension? You don't. So you need in order to make that happen, you would need LeBron to not sign his extension and do what James Harden just did until the Lakers look, go get Kyrie, go get whoever you need, and I'll just take whatever's left. Now if LeBron wants to do that, great. That'd be fantastic, but I don't think we have any evidence that that's what he's thinking. Yeah, contracts matter here. The Lakers don't have a finite amount of money, unfortunately. So if they trade for buddy and miles now, you are essentially probably going to need to pay miles Turner at some point too, if you want to keep them. Otherwise you're just renting them and I wouldn't trade it first for a rental for miles Turner. So I think if you're trading for miles Turner, you have the intent to resigning in. What money you left over do you have to keep a bra a significant amount of stay? Not much. Just curious if the pacer said yes to the offer to the Lakers go to the nets and try to pull off a Kyrie trade or go through with the pacers trade. I think they are waiting for Kyrie. They should. I think they will do if the pace is trade is still there. I think they'll do the pacers trade. If Kyrie is totally completely gone. What's the ceiling for a Lakers team with yield and Turner? Think of everything fits right. You've got a puncher's chance in the playoffs, but not as strong of a puncher's chance. As if you had Kyrie. So to me, if I'm a fan, now you listen to that, I'm thinking, does that mean Trevor things they have? They are a tough second round out. Probably. Yeah. That's probably what I would see them as with the hope being that you know what? LeBron and AD are going to go nuclear, come playoff time, and that's going to be the difference and then we're going to be a handful. You know what? The other thing too is I'm assuming you have no qualms about having four centers basically under Austria then, right? That's the other issue, right? Essentially, you would be if you did this, you'd be committing to one of Damien Jones and Thomas Bryant not playing. Right? They would be relegated to the bench. And you could let them battle it out. I mean, I think it's intriguing. You could always have a floor spacing bag out there. If you had Thomas Bryant and miles Turner, if that's really the way you want to play, it would in a lot of ways replicate what the bucks have with Bobby portis and brook Lopez. Sure. I mean, that's fair. Yeah. Sean Tate said, what's the full power of palinka? Does that mean? Like, does he have autonomy to make deals on his own probably? I mean, everything's got to be run through Jeannie, but I do think Jeannie trusts him to make deals. Yeah, I'd say we're all probably has final say on any deal. I'm not final say, but for the most part he acts autonomously. I'm just rented up to junior and says, I think this will make us better. You should probably go, okay. Pinocchio. You should probably runs a bi Phil first. Oh, God. Well, sorry, and the rabbi. And the rambi, that's right. I had somebody who was upset with me for saying rabbi. Why? He gave me

"Turn the ball over. Take good shots. Maximize your strength, minimize your weaknesses, don't pull up with 20 seconds left in the clock and shoot from 17 feet, while the coaches on the other team are cheering because they see you doing that. Don't do those things. You've got to figure out a way to fit into the modern game and this role. And I'm not saying it's easy. A big part of me sympathizes with Russell Westbrook. That's tough when your whole life you've been the guy. You've been that guy, your entire life. You broke records. You averaged a triple double, multiple times. You won the MVP. In a few short years to suddenly be told that your game has got to fit in with everybody else for forever. It's been everybody else having to fit in with you. It's not easy. Some guys can't do it. What happened with Allen Iverson? Great player. Game didn't translate to the latter part of his career. Carmelo did it, white did it, Vince Carter did it? Can rust do it? Again, we might not be at that point just yet, but we're just saying, Rossi's just a role player. But that's coming. And I don't know if he's going to be able to make that transition or not. It's not an easy one. Alex amber links is pat bev would be a great pickup for us. We need that dog factor. Yeah, from a mentality standpoint. Yeah, I agree. I think he could certainly help with that particularly if darvin ham is all about defense. You know Patrick Beverly at least is going to get the defense fired up. That's important. "Yeah, I mean, we'll see if it turns into anything major, but if nothing else, it's a more breathing room. So important to note, I do have a super chat here. Said, will Troy weaver esham 9 76? Well, Troy weaver make another big move. I mean, they've got one more day to use up their cap space and then going into the summer right now. They're rosters really, really full because they kept all their guys. Lou dort, they moved around. They're going to decline his option, did decline his option, they'll make them restrictive free agent. What would the idea of resigning him? So yeah, I think maybe. Let's see what they do tomorrow. Tonight into tomorrow because it's kind of their last chance. Otherwise, I don't think they're done because they're going to move Jamaica green probably, they said they were, but yeah, I think they'll basically stick to what they have for now. And I think they like that. And I'm okay with that, honestly. You're talking about Jamaica green that's you're talking to OKC there. Yeah. Oh my gosh, I saw a Troy weaver and I went right to OKC. That is my fault, Nisha. That's dominated. No, no, for a second there, I was thinking, I was like going, it could be sunny weaver. I'm like, no, if you're gone, if you wink, Cleveland, okay. But all right, let's answer the real question he asked. Since he did the super chat, the Detroit Pistons, yeah, I mean, none of those deals are done yet, which tells me they may all expand, they may do some different stuff. So let's see how those all come together. They'll probably be sitting on projecting before they resign Marvin Bagley, which sounds like they're going to do for about $10 million. So they'll probably have, in the end, the 11 $12 million in cap space. So we'll see where that goes through, but yeah, they're still going to be pretty active because they've got a lot of moving parts with them. I don't know why I went to take a nap, but that tells you how long of a day it's been. That's where we're at that point of the day. Bobby portis, we've got a lot of options to get into. Bobby portis declines his option with the Milwaukee Bucks, but is expected to stay. He's going to get paid more, but I don't see him going anywhere else. Yeah, I don't either. This was always the design with this one plus one. There. So yeah, that's how it's going to go. He's probably going to get close ish, if not exactly his max, which is about four years, 49 million or so from the books. All right. From there, OKC declines the option on Lou dort. That does not mean Lou dort is available. Everybody else on Twitter. Fans of every team were like, can we get Lou dort now? No. They're doing it. They're declining it so they can keep them. And I know it sounds weird. Like you're here to decline option and you instantly think that means the guy's going. But they're declining it so that he becomes a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent next year. So that's what's happening here. Lou dorr and Jay Sean Tate, same boat after it sounded like the rocket said initially decided to pick up his option..

"By the way, all credit to Keith Smith. I bet he's on the power forward list. Ah, okay. So auto Porter junior would be and I think he's interchangeable there is a four or three or four. Maybe even more for right now than three. Yeah. He's on this list. I would add his name to this. TJ Warren. Miles bridges is restricted. You're not getting him. Jay Sean Tate, aria's option picked up. Caleb and Cody Martin? That's interesting. You know, jovan floated this idea the other day. I was talking to my buddy Alan S leeway. And said that the Lakers have even had talks about splitting the taxpayer mid level and trying to get two wings. I don't know which two they can actually get for that though. Yeah. 3 million apiece. You can offer you can offer minutes. You can offer role, I will say this. I wouldn't hold it out because I think with rob palinka. And I said this a pregnancy with you for us on another space I did on Twitter that as much as we like to crap on raw polanka, there are going to be players that are going to come to the Lakers that their market value is going to be way higher. They might be worth a taxpayer, but the Lakers might be able to get in for a better minimum because of raw palinkas experience as an agent. He's not the best when it comes to trades because of his relationship around the lead, but as an agent and his experience there really helps the Lakers have free agency. So maybe there's a couple of these guys, not just a wings, but maybe a guard or a center that may be targeting. Weak link. That raw point can be like, hey man, look, we don't have it right now, but hey, with my AJ experience, let's get this done. Maybe it's not a little for a little bit less, like a better minimum. IE Malik monk. So I think we give rob some credit there. So I will caution that. Maybe you do, maybe get Jordan aura, but crap. No, restrict it. Never mind. That's the challenge, right? These guys who are restricted. And again, we can jump over to the power forward list as well. Because there are some guys that, again, can feel either roles. So you look at the power forward list. Bobby portis not getting him too expensive. PJ Tucker, he's going to get like 30 million, which is crazy to me. Kyle Anderson agreed to expensive tres, did that Jeff Green? I don't know. I think he may have picked up his player option. Chris Boucher, too expensive. Otto Porter. Otto Porter, you can say, all right, auto. The warriors, they're already spending on kevon Looney. They're going to spend a bunch..

"On which route you do with the Westbrook trade, or if you trade them at all. If you don't trade Russ, out of Porter junior, if you trade rust for the Gordon Hayward package, great paying the second, or if you trade them for a guard oriented package out of Porter junior. Ritual king says odds dame demands a trade to LA while Portland rebuilt. Well, Portland is going to try to build this summer. They're going to try to take all the stuff they got in the various trades they made at the trade deadline. And they're going to try to repackage that and get pieces to help Damian Lillard right now. That's why we've heard Jeremy grant connected to them. That's why we've heard Zach lavine connected with them. They're going to try to add pieces to win right now around him. So if Damian Lillard is going to request a trade at the earliest, we're talking about the trade deadline this year. If not most likely later, we're talking summer 2023, maybe even later than that. That's the situation with Damien Leonard. So I would not expect them to ask for a trade right now. If he specifically asked for a trade to the Lakers, my sense is the blazers still would not trade him to the Lakers. Blazers fans hate the Lakers. They do. I know, I don't feel any particular way about the blazers. Just don't. But for blazers fans, it's a big deal. I've seen it quite a bit across social media, blazers fans have said, consistently, if they were ever to trade Damian Lillard, the one place they would absolutely refuse to trade him regardless of the return is the Lakers. Again, it's just the way it is. I'm actually doing radio in Portland in a couple hours here. So we'll see what they say anything. But just that's the sense that I've gotten is that they don't they do not like the Lakers. Snorlax acts, Trevor, is it possible for the Lakers to get the non taxpayer level exception or can we only have the taxpayer in my love? What, pretty sure the only way they can get the non taxpayers if rust pretty much declines to player option or is waved and stretched. And stretched, yeah. Yeah, that's about the only way that they can do that. All right, let's do, let's do one more here. Sean Tate, Boston is an old rivalry, the warriors are a new one. See, I don't see the warriors as a big rival for the Lakers because they were never good at the same time. So we never had those head to head match ups. With the warriors. Like if the Lakers, if the warriors have been good while like Kobe was around and it was, you know, it was Kobe versus staff who somehow we mixed timelines or something. Yeah, then there would be something there. But to me, they've never been head to head really competitors at the same time. The Lakers were rebuilding when the warriors were good, then the warriors were having down years when the Lakers won the championship. So yeah, I don't see them as a rival. As much as warriors fans like to talk and we've seen that on social media and all that. But I think that's just because they've heard Lakers fans forever and now suddenly they have a decent team for the first time in a long time. And so they've got their opportunity to say stuff. Ricky Reyes just got here F Boston. Welcome, Ricky. We're just about to wrap up here..

"Augustine, three O four from DP continues to light it up from behind the arc for your Los Angeles Lakers. So that was something there. Sean Tate, do you believe the Lakers will make the play and right now it is less likely that they will make the plan than likely. So let's say if we're looking at the Lakers schedule and you're looking at the spur schedule, both have really different difficult schedules down the stretch. The Lakers have two games where you'd look at it and say, okay, they probably have a pretty good shot of winning those games. And that's the pelicans game tomorrow night. And the thunder game, the second to last game of the season. Those are the two games that stand out on the schedule for the Lakers. The spurs have two games as well. Two games against the blazers. Those are kind of give me wins at this point because the blazers aren't really playing anybody. They don't really have much of a team anymore. They've had so many injuries, so many guys out for the year. So if that's the case, if the spurs win their two games against the blazers and the Lakers only win the two games against the pelicans and against the thunder, that's it. Lakers are out. Lakers are out. That's how it goes. And the Lakers they have to win one more game than the spurs. And so because of that, I could see them not making it. I also saw a spurs team that was really competing really, really competing, really getting after it. And they almost beat the grizzlies last night. I think grizzly's without John morant, but still, we've seen that team be successful. The Lakers got very, very lucky. The spurs Kelvin Johnson missed a layup at the buzzer to beat the grizzlies last night, otherwise that would have really put the Lakers into tough spot, had the spurs managed to get an upset win over the grizzlies, but the spurs, the way they're playing right now, they're playing like they want in the plane and they really want to knock the Lakers out. So if the spurs managed to pull off an upset win here or there, even just one. I think that's going to make it very, very unlikely that the Lakers do make it in. "LeBron Russ, Austin Reeves, when he and Gabriel, and then depending on whether you want to go big or small, it's either Malik monk or Dwight Howard. Is that where we're at right now? Do we have some semblance of a consistent lineup yet now that when you Gabriel has shown success? Well, you know, the fun part is that Anthony Davis comes back. This is all going to get flipped again. How do we approach that situation? That's true. But I mean, sorry, but I mean, as far as the question goes for the who is available right now, I think so. I think you just got to get athletes out there. Kind of sounds like a no duh kind of comment, but it's true. I was complaining the first 40, 50 games at the Lakers were old and slow. You switched those guys out with guys that have young legs and can get up and down the floor for 30 minutes a game. I don't know. I think you just got to do it. So I think this is where we're landing. But the Anthony Davis factor is going to be a big thing when and if he's ready to play. Yes. Yep, absolutely. That's going to be one 80 comes back. What do you do? What do you do? That's a good problem to have though. It is. I would assume that, sorry, this is me spitballing out loud. I feel like maybe you keep Gabriel as kind of like, I don't know, I guess the halfway, the halfway kind of compromise for fogle wanting to stay big, but also being mobile. So maybe you go AD and Gabriel for a little bit. I don't know. Sean Tate said, good to see my super chat led to a new studio. Guys, yes. I had to mention, that's totally what this is. "You know, I understand why you want mellow on the floor on that last possession. I think you absolutely want him on the floor for the last possession. You need a spacing. But if you recognize that you need mellow spacing, well, you probably need other players who can space the floor as well. On the offensive end and they didn't go that route. Instead, we saw, I believe it's THT out there as well as Russ. They're not going to get a lot of respect behind the arc and have players glued to them, not quite like a Malik monk would. So that was certainly a frustrating moment there for Lakers fans and so I understand that. I actually thought mellow did okay tonight in this one. Again, the shooting wasn't bad, got better in the second half. He looked a little rusty, but we have to remember, he hasn't played in an NBA game since the beginning of the month. Because he was hurt and then we had the all star break, so it was February 3rd, which is last game. So you had to expect a little bit of rust from Melo. So I'm not going to fault him too much on this. Vector nova for the super chat said, that was so frustrating. Both on Vogel's planning and Carmelo shot, Carmelo especially because literally THT was open in the corner. Westbrook was down there fighting with Reggie, who's fighting his way to THT, THT was hot too. Yeah, I mean, the swing pass to THT in hindsight, we can probably say right now would have been the better move, but let me ask you this. Let's say he swings at the THD and THT takes a dribble and attacks and doesn't score or shoots that three and doesn't hit it. Are we then questioning why mellow one of the team's best three point shooters didn't just step in and take the shot himself. Maybe, maybe, right? Hindsight's 2020, but yes, in the moment, as the play was developing, and when LeBron through that pass, I thought one more, one more, one more meeting Melo needs to make that one more, make that extra pass. I thought that was what needed to happen on the play. But again, had it played out that way, and THT not scored. I think we'd also be looking back saying, why did mellow pass that ball? Why didn't he try to make something happen himself? So hindsight can be 2020 sometimes, but I agree, hey, certainly frustrating. Sean Tate Vogel against good coaches shows he's not top tier. So during the during the title season, he showed that he can make some top tier adjustments, but that was when he had a team that was really built for his particular skill set. We talk about player skill sets all the time. We talk about whether or not a team raised really fitting together in terms of the skill sets that they've got. And this Lakers team doesn't fit skill set wise in terms of the guys that they've got on the roster..

"You have three legitimate candidates for this award. Now, don't you? Let's see. I am going to probably go, and this is probably the boring answer, but I'm going to go with LeBron James. Triple double first game back after missing 5. Really turned it up in the second half. I know we're going to talk about the first half probably in a little bit. But the second half was a completely different LeBron. And I thought he made play after play after play. And I think he is, you know, if I had to pie chart this win, I think he's at least 35 to 40% of this at least. So I'm gonna go with LeBron. Agreed. Agreed. Yes, I will also go LeBron James, but that is not for lack of trying from the other players. Anthony Davis, and of course Malik monk. They were tremendous in this game. If you were missing one of those guys, the Lakers don't the Lakers don't like your stomach. So I think this was a great performance for all of them, but again, I'm going with LeBron, especially coming back from injury. He was absolutely fantastic. All right, let's do it because I've got so many people in the chat talking about it right now. Sean Tate says, let's just buy out Westbrook. It's time to move on. Well, you know that money is still in the books then. Nishad Marathi said, Lakers should shut down Westbrook and make monk a permanent starter with Stanley Johnson and either Avery Bradley or Austin Reeves, I've got oh man, these are some spicy things. I love it. I've got a lot of them coming in. I've got hulk smash as Westbrook was atrocious and THT is LeBron James if you ordered him from the wish app. Just drip off the shot clock. These rarely make me like literally stop and laugh, but that's a pretty good one. The shot clock should need OT to beat the Knicks. So again, we've got a lot of PJ Benji said name a team with a who's starting point guard isn't better than Russ. This was a rough night from Russell Westbrook. A really rough night. I mean, if you look at just looking at the stats, one for ten, four boards, 6 assists, one steel one block or turnovers. He missed a number of different layouts to the point where he was getting frustrated with all the lamps that were being missed. He was, in fact, at some points lagging behind a play because he was upset that he had missed the missed it..

"44% from three at home. That's insane. There is something too that there is something to that. We've got a super chat here. Sean to new said, have you noticed most wins come only when one player has a great game? Would we win if mellow doesn't go 5 or 6 from three? Wins need to be more sustainable. Yeah, there's some truth to that. It takes one of the role player guys going off in order to get a win. But that's also not that uncommon around the NBA. For teams to need somebody to step up and have a big night and it can change who that is. Usually your stars, you know you're going to get a pretty good performance out of them most nights. But usually you need somebody else to make a major contribution in order to get a win. So that's true and it can be frustrating when it doesn't happen, but that's also something that's not a uniquely Lakers thing. Yeah, yeah, that's something that's very common around Golden State, you know, they can have staff or one of these other guys go off, but they'll normally have normally the whole bench bench performance or just really have a great game and they'll elevate them and propel them to a when. You take that away, just go and say still Wednesday games, who knows, but they're definitely probably not a top three team in a league record wise. If their bench is as good as it is. Sean Tate said, why do Lakers trades continually get leaked? Well, so we need to think about if you are if you're looking at trade rumors and stuff that's coming out. We always have to read between the lines and Keith Smith and I open the NBA for an office show, which you guys should definitely go subscribe. Subscribe to we talk about this all the time. So when trade rumors come out, you have to think about a few things. Who benefits from that rumor getting out there? There was one we talked about today about, oh gosh, who was it? There was a player that we talked about at the end of our show today. Jared Culver. Jared culvert with the grizzlies. There was a rumor that came out that some teams might call about Jericho. Is that likely accurate? Well, jerick Culver really setting the world on fire right now? No, but his agent might want to put it out there that there's some interesting him or the grizzlies might want to put out there that there's some interest in him, just to see if maybe they can free up a roster spot. So sometimes information will leak out this time of year with a purpose. There's information that's being put out for a reason..

"Decided to cut him loose entirely. And Christian wood, while productive over the course of the last couple of years in a couple places, Detroit and Houston has had some bumps along the way too, but this is what happens. I mean, when you're the rockets and you're looking for hidden gems or, you know, just some, you know, just try to find young guys to build around who may have some rough spots, you knew you were taking a risk when you brought these guys in, especially Kevin Porter junior and do you have the infrastructure? Do you have the foundation to deal with it? John Lucas is a great place to start. So if you had asked me in the abstract a year ago, hey is this a good place for these guys to go where they'll have the right support and the right leadership? I'd say yes because of John Lucas in particular and any of the rest of that coaching staff too and certainly Steven Silas. But do they have the veterans there? Outside of Eric Gordon and I don't know DJ Augustine. I mean, like there's no there's not a lot of gray hairs on this roster. Not a lot of guys who've been through a lot. I just, I don't know if you've got enough there to coax these guys through these kinds of times. And, you know, listen, maybe they're just not going to be. Like maybe there is no good answer. Maybe Kevin Porter junior is never going to get it right. We see that happens sometimes too. I'm not saying that that he won't. I never want to write a guy off this early in his career. He's very young. But some guys never figure it out. So maybe it's not in the rockets. But you do have to have the support system there when you're taking a risk on guys who have a history as these guys do. So I don't know where it goes from here. I mean, you know, look, teammates can forgive it, they can bring them back into the fold and admit that that's tough to that's not a fight in the locker room. That's just quitting. Like, it's as simple as that. That's quitting. You quit on your team. Two players, two starters, two of the best players on that team just quit. Now I wrote a column about this on SI dot com. I know it sounds like a nuclear option to just cut ties with these two players, but the rockets, they've got to build a culture. Now you just said, when you're in a position like the rockets, you're trying to take a flyer on these guys, try to see try to find a diamond, whatever. The rockets have talent on that roster. Pretty good young town. Like jaylen green has the potential to be a terrific score. Alperin sanguine is someone that has looked like he could be one of the steals in the draft from this past year. 6 foot ten can rebound, looks like he can shoot the three down the line, good player. You got Jay Sean Tate, who's got a little bit of that PJ Tucker in him can be a defensive minded guy in your front court, defend a bunch of different positions. Like those are the guys you are going to be building around. It's not going to be Kevin Porter and Christian wood. It's just, I think we've reached that point. Like Kevin Porter junior is extension eligible this summer. Can you imagine any scenario where the rockets committed serious money to him? Like real money? Anything beyond like money that they wouldn't mind eating if things go wayward once again? Same thing with Christian Woods got one year left in his contract. He's extension eligible this summer. Like wood puts up numbers, he was fourth in the most improved player voting last year, but he has yet to show anywhere that he's a winning player. It's not, look, it's not on him that he played for Detroit, and they're bad. Now he's with Houston, they're bad, but all I've seen from Christian wood is that he can put up numbers. I have not seen contributions towards winning yet, at least not the kind of contributions that would warrant being paid real money by the Houston Rockets. Your future, if you're Houston, is green, it is Tate, it is sanguine, and it's whoever comes out of this high lottery pick that you're going to have next year. Whether that's Chet holmgren or jabari Smith or any of the other guys that are out there sitting at the top of next year's draft. Those are the guys you're building around. Every other roster spot needs to be devoted to guys that will help them succeed. Veteran guys that will help them succeed. I don't I just don't see the point right now at keeping Porter junior and would around when you I mean you know like they're smart people in Houston. They know that these two guys are not going to be part of their long-term future. So my opinion is that you just cut Kevin Porter junior like you eat the last of the 1.8 million. He's due this year. I think it's 3.2 million next year. And you trade Christian wood. Like there's a market for Christian wood. Like Charlotte would love to get their hands on Christian wood. Portland would love a guy like Christian wood. I'm sure the Lakers want everybody at this point. They would love to get a guy like Christian wood. So you can deal him and then just focus on your culture, try building, you know, things in a more productive way. Like you have the coach, like Steven Silas, is an excellent coach. He's probably going to wind up getting scapegoated for this mess. At some point, at the end of the year, because that's the way it goes in the NBA. But Steven Silas is an excellent coach, a very good developmental guy as he's shown in previous stops as an assistant. So you've got a good coach. You've got some pretty good young players, a decent foundation. I don't know why you're messing around with stuff like this that can only serve to create negativity around your team, potentially hamper the development of some of the young guys you're really locked in on. Yeah, I mean, it's hard to disagree with any of that, Chris. I don't know what the rockets are going to become where this is all headed, what the overall plan is. I mean, obviously, look, it's a tear down, and they are going young and they're trying to stock up on young players and that's the general direction, which is the normal thing to do when you were forced into a position to trade guys when you had to offload harden and Westbrook and start over. And I don't mind them going, you know, making some rolls of the dice, but you also do have to acknowledge when those roles have gone bad when you've crapped out. I don't know if we're there yet. I mean, you know, look, there's often a lot more to these things than we see or hear, right? So have there been any other incidents that are of a serious nature with either Porter or wood? Have you hit the third strike yet with these guys? Are you okay still proceeding with maybe just one of them? And you're right on Porter junior it's a small price to pay with another whatever you burn 3 million or whatever off of cap if you cut them now for next season, that's not gonna kill you. You're gonna be below the cap anyway and you're rebuilding team. It's fine. And I agree that there are teams that would not only love to have Christian wood for his talent, but could handle whatever comes with that. A more veteran team, there are plenty of places I could see him. I think he'd be great in Dallas. Portland, as you mentioned, there are plenty of others who could use a talented big. Um, I just don't know if we're at that point yet. I don't know. It has Houston definitively reached the breaking point with either or both. I do think there's the danger of if you hold on to them too long and if those things continue and are unchecked or they're not held accountable unless to their credit, they suspended them both for a game. They're trying to establish what the rules and what the limits are. But you don't want to poison the overall environment, right? When you get Jalen green, when you get, when he's back, when you have the next group that comes behind that in the coming draft and the one after that, you certainly want to have a good stable and accountable environment for guys to come up.

"It hasn't been an easy season. It's not like people are mad just because they're mad. It's not like the Lakers are the one seed right now and they've been playing great and they lose a game and people are upset. No, it's been a rough season and it's on the heels of a rough season last year where the team couldn't get healthy. Injury after injury after injury and they could never get healthy and now we've kind of seen more of the same. We've yet to see the full team together. Still. So I understand the frustration. I really do. There's a reason for the frustration. I've even got somebody saying free LeBron from his contract. Again, LeBron is not going anywhere. No. Sean Tate said, how long will coach Vogel be in protocol? You know, we've been asking for updates on that every single media day. We've been media availability. We've been asking for updates. All we've heard is that he's still, he's feeling okay. And they're hoping he can be back soon, but that's all we're getting right now. Until he's officially cleared, all we know is that he's doing okay, but not ready to go yet. Joey can't let no more defending Russell Westbrook and THT if they are still in the team after the deadline this team won't even make the playoffs let alone get out of the first round. I don't see and the NBA has weird things happening happen, but I don't see them trading Russell Westbrook at the trade deadline. I think logistically, it's just too hard to pull off. You never say never in the NBA. Almost every contract that we've looked at and has gotten that moniker untreatable. It's been traded. Bad contracts get traded all the time. But pulling off a trade for Russell Westbrook will be very, very, very, very difficult. The Lakers they tried already, they tried, they called the 76ers, see if there was interest and there wasn't. If there was an opportunity there, the Lakers will consider it, but I would be surprised if Russell Westbrook was traded at the trade deadline. Same. Yeah. If you're going to trade Russ, it's going to have to be in the off season where a team can be like, okay, maybe there's only all you have to do without one year left because I would be very surprised for Russo did not accept his player option come this upcoming off season. So if you get to trade them, it would have to be in the off season. No, he's picking that up for sure. Yeah. Somebody says, somebody in the chat said people are bashing LeBron. There's no way. There's no way to look at this at this game and say, this was in any way on LeBron James. He was phenomenal. He was absolutely incredible tonight. There's no way you can put this one on LeBron James. That's crazy. Unless you talk about that last play, I believe Russ stops his cut and just comment like coaching. Ball wise, you never stop a cut, especially a backdoor cut. Russ stops his cut. I mean, it's a tough pass, but I'm really at a thread in the needle there, but Russ kind of stopped his cut and LeBron through it already, so I mean, if you talk about that play, I'm saying that the super chat said rusted like a stutter like you would certain if.

"And both of them turned and ran away and he knocked in the wide open three because they just completely did the wrong. They neither one of them stayed to defend the player. Some of the stuff that we've been seeing that is mind boggling, but tonight was especially bad in terms of number one, the defensive cohesiveness, but also I thought that the effort on both ends of the floor was pretty bad except for maybe a burst from Russell Westbrook towards the end of the third quarter. Yeah, I mean, going back to the comment as far as the front office goes, I understand under the belief that they didn't think that rondo and DHA were going to be playing such big words for the Lakers. I think they were really just meant to be veteran depth pieces that you could break in case of an emergency. But given all the COVID protocol stuff and injuries, they've just been thrust into larger roles. I know DA, I know Deandre started for half basically most of the season already, but I do think that you were right that the plan was to ultimately shift to Anthony Davis at center full time. Now that he's out, we got to use the centers again. Dwight was out because of protocol, so then we got to play Deandre. So I'm not going to blame that. I'm not going to pin it entirely on the front office, though I do question that the roster construction could have been a lot better. It could have been planned a lot better. IE more three and D wings or a four or 5 big man that can be more versatile. But I'm like you said tonight's game was very indicative of how their season has gone, because like you said, every time the Lakers got within like ten, 11 points or even single digits, the spurs would go on a small three, four, 5, zero run, and then beat back up double digits. And it just continually felt like the Lakers were going uphill the entire game, couldn't generate any momentum. And then the game kind of just blew open in the fourth quarter. And then you got that viral sequence where LeBron went one on 5 and jacked up a three in the corner. That didn't go. That's basically the whole night. And you know, I also am going to say this right now is that I don't think you're going to beat many teams when you shoot 5 of 27 from beyond the arc, and the other team shoots 18 of 39. That's true. That's also true. Yeah, the Lakers shot 18 and a half percent from three tonight and 57% from the free throw line. I don't even get me started on the free throw. Yeah, they could not hit anything tonight. That was certainly a parent. All right, we do need to get into a few more of these super chats that we've got coming in to appreciate those Morris two said Lakers love their 6 5 and below guys. Yes. They sure knew that. That is true. Sean Tate from YouTube said fizdale is worse than Vogel. Does this that one thing we can put to rest? The idea that getting rid of it and replacing him with the fizdale would fix everything. Is that dead and gone now? Yes, can we talk? I've been wanting to say this and I've been holding my talk on it..

"It's weird. It's weird the way all of this is happening. It's strange that you just can't really ever get a sense for whether or not a player is going to be truly available and then if they're out how long they're going to be out, it's a challenge. It's a challenge for sure and I know it's left a lot of Lakers fans with their head spinning trying to figure out who's going to be in a game who's not Frank Vogel said it was it's been challenging for him to because it's constantly shifting and changing, but that's just living in right now. Sean Tate said with 80s injury we need Westbrook now. Absolutely. Absolutely, Sean weed, this is where Russell Westbrook really has to step up. And unfortunately, Russ has already been asked to step up quite a bit during this season when LeBron James was out due to injury and then out due to suspension and things of that nature that also do do a false positive. Russell Westbrook was asked to step up in that scenario, but you're right. This was part of the benefit of going and getting a third star. The idea behind it anyway was that if and when LeBron or Anthony Davis has to go out for whatever reason, whether it's injury, whether it's load management, whatever it is, you've got another guy that can raise their game to the next level and pick up the slack. Unfortunately, I don't think we've seen Westbrook do that not to the degree that the Lakers need him to, and I'm not saying the Westbrook's been bad. I actually think over the last few weeks, he's been pretty good. This is a quiet night from him, and he's had a few stinkers in there too, but for the most part, we've seen a much better version of brussel Westbrook over the last probably one three weeks compared to the guy that we saw at the beginning of the season. But it's still not quite the guy the Lakers need him to be in this type of scenario. You need destroyer of worlds what Russell Westbrook to step up the guy that's just going to go drop 30 on somebody and really make up for losing that other star. Still is going to have some opportunities to do that. But again, that was part of the selling point of this plan to bring in Westbrook was okay. We're going to have a guy to turn to if and when LeBron or AD are out Westbrook's going to help carry us so far he hasn't been able to do that, but you're right. If Anthony Davis is out, a lot of the pressure to pick things up while it is a team effort in terms of really raising their game.
