"You know, they recognize it. He has made huge strides and the talents there. So I'm excited to see him now in this big stage opportunity and a huge SEC game. Does he take that next step? You know, that was another takeaway from the meeting. You know, he's clearly the starting quarterback now as the folks here know there was some question if he was for the first couple of weeks that that's gone. And you think about everything he's been through. You know, move to a completely different part of the country, learn a completely different style of offense. He's never played in the RPO offense before. He's out of the air raid. So he had to learn all of this all the new teammates. And different hunting here too. Different hunting. He's a hundred fisherman. I think though and Todd would agree with me on this. I'm sure the biggest takeaway of the meeting with Jackson dart is he has a brother named diesel. And that's his actual name. Nickname. It's mad at his parents. Yeah, he's mad that he's not diesel because he was older and they named him Jackson and then the younger brother diesel. Can't get this stuff anywhere, you know? I wasted all our good stuff today. Don't worry, our audience isn't that big. Oh, yes it is. Every time I'm on this show, I just have a lot of people tell me I saw you on there with Paul. I want to go back to and you know me. I'm always looking for some gossip, but so you're talking to a coach and you know it's going to be a bad day when they say, if we have a perfect game, we think we can maybe keep it a two or three score game. I don't know if they ever say that, but a lot of times you get the list. We've got our hands full. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to have to do this this and all candor. And it wasn't set off the records. Our conversations with the South Carolina people, a couple of weeks ago and they played Georgia. And they were realists. But you feel good about that, because beamers. And you also appreciate the candor because we watched the tapes and we like to think we know a little going into it. I certainly lean heavily on both Todd's for their football sense of it when we go in. You know, what you do is an uphill challenge. Does anybody ever kill off the record? We have no chance. I'm not sure ever those exact words, but a lot of times it comes about as close to that as it can be. In other words, you've got Paul Chris once told me right before a game. No, the day before game and walk through is that we just, you know, look at all the 5 stars. I have no idea. I mean, he was pulling my chain, but he was like, you know, I don't know what we can do to win this game. And then they went out and beat LLC the next day. Todd, I mean, you're looking at a lot of things. But Sean's saying things that are okay for public air. How forthcoming are these guys with you about prospects and about ability and things that really matter to someone who's doing a valuations like you? Much more forthcoming when it's January, February, march. And that's when they'll really tell you. And it's also there's right now with so many juniors coming out and underclassmen coming out. They don't want to talk about prospects in that regard. They want the focus to be on the season. I want the focus to be on the season. And then I can dive into all the other character things and some just how they work and those sorts of issues. But that's what I thought it was interesting because kiffin came here and he said, I was a minute late, I was at a collective press conference. And you're like going, this is a guy that doesn't need to be at a collective press conference the day before the biggest game so far this year. But you need to because L is a huge part of the future. The interesting part about your last question, Paul. And I've been with Todd when this has happened where we've walked away from a meeting. And Todd felt the coach was kind of almost underselling the player because he doesn't want him. Todd mcshay says, well, if he goes, he's definitely a first round picker second round pick. The kid knows his credibility. He's probably going to go where the coach, you know, a lot of times, well, I really think if he stayed another year, he'd really benefit from the experience. Sometimes that's actually true. But a lot of times it's just, I want my guy to stay. Sean McDonough and Todd mcshay, I know you have to evaluate, but can you divorce all the noise? Because no matter what you say about a player, it becomes an explosion on social media. And then they'll throw it up against you. You gave me a really honest answer a couple weeks ago. I asked you about Van Dyck. In Miami, and you were cool. But I'm only going to talk to God. I was supposed to be a first round because everybody has said everybody. It's the first round pick at some point. But you gave a very honest objective response. I feel like it's my job to make sure that I'm giving the honest answers and not trying to sell somebody because it's not fair to the young man. It's not fair to the process. So I mean, Anthony Richardson coming into the year. Everyone was talking about if he has a great season. He could be a top 15 pick, right? And he hasn't had a great season. He struggled. He had that first great game against Utah. And the hype train started. And everyone was going to be a top ten pick. And maybe he's the first overall pick. He's that talented. But you've got to look at. I mean, he completed 33 passes coming into the season. He had started two games. You've got to play the game in Tyler Van Dyke played a lot last year, but it was in a different system, and now he's adjusting the system. So their first round talents. But I feel like it's my responsibility to make sure people understand, just because you have the talent doesn't mean you're ready. We'll levis is ready because he has the talent and he's mature enough and he's played a lot of ball. Let me ask you about another quarterback who's in the conversation all the time about everything. And there's still doubters. Stetson Bennett. He's I've talked to a scout this week who actually said, you know what? Coming into the year based off of last year's tape, 7th round, free agent, just, you know, I love the way he plays. And I love all that. And he said, watching this first few weeks and I know he has so much more talent around him than the opponent, but he's playing different. He's bigger, he's stronger. He's more aggressive. He's more decisive, and it looks like he said, I haven't seen him live yet, but it looks like the ball has a little bit more juice to it. And so I love players like that who have kind of fought

"For me to judge what it would affect him talking about his country isn't fair, but I had already said that you're a loser and no one likes you and that's why you didn't get the Putin gold card. That's what I know I haven't heard the audio, but that's just a rumor coming out of the from between the benches there. What do you think are? Yeah, I don't know. I mean, you can get personal. I think basically if it's not, you're not using racial shit, you know, ethnic stuff. I think we can say whatever, man. It's the NHL. People are the best players in the world. People are going to say nasty stuff. They're going to chirp up. And, you know, I know new generations of, you know, a little I don't want to say soft, but maybe a little more sensitive about this stuff. But yeah, if it's not something about someone, you know, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or anything like that. Fuck it, man. It should be, you know, whatever. You're making fun of Russia than say some about fucking his country. Now mind you, I'm completely fine and it was hilarious that Panera and through the glove atom. And if what he said made Panera and so mad that he fought him, which, by the way, parents fought before. He kind of chucked them. But Aaron Marshall would actually be a fun fight for mortgage fight. So if it upset him that much, 100%, I don't blame him, do whatever you want. But I just am saying, I don't think he deserves to be suspended for saving about Russia, right? If it pisses him off, I don't blame the kid, but in the end, it's like, do I think it's that bad? No. But is Panera definitely gonna play for Russia in the Olympics if these players actually end up going? Wow, that's a good, I don't know, that's a great question. As I'd even brought up, I have no idea, but he's been openly speaking out against the country. Putin is like the he's like the super team national team. Yeah. Exactly. He's the 13th forward. Got a snipe. We got a good snape too. During the game, too, Sean McDonough, the announcer said he talked to tuca rask rass told him he'll be skating 5 times a week beginning next week. He hopes to return to play in January, hopes it will be as a bro and I can't imagine he'll go anywhere else. I'll mock and swimming. Well, before last night's game combined 9 O 8, 8 percentage, that's not a number that's gonna probably even get you into the playoffs. So a healthy prominent to the bruins January would be a pretty welcome site for that squad. Given the way the golden has been, although mock was pretty good last night, you think he's going to definitely be back a lot with. I think he would like to be in the way the teams looked. It makes total sense. There's bruins fans who think that's crazy and don't want them back. Well, you've seen kind of how average your team is this year. It seems like they win one lose one, same thing on and on. The goaltending while at times has been good overall isn't good enough. So why not bring back one of the best goalies to ever played for the bruins? Yeah, that's a fact, right? And swam in still on entry level so you can send them down no way. All of a sudden though, what happens to the salary cap? Are they going to be jammed up towards all he would have to sign? He'll take the buffalo buffalo. Yeah, because he's made his money. He said he money's not a concern at this. Oh my God. Fans not wanting them back at 7 50. Could you imagine that? I don't know if it would actually be 7 50, but it wouldn't be 6 million. It would be very low. He won't be playing. He basically said he wouldn't be playing for money. He would just be playing for the sake. For the impacts for the road, that's fucking nice of him. What a guy. For everything he's taken in that city man, as far as the criticism, he's a fucking G if I'm Ken hall and I'm hopping on a first class finish airlines flight right over to well, I guess he's in Boston. But I'm just trying to be like, get up to Edmonton, tuka. Win a Stanley Cup with the oilers. Once an oiler always an oiler, no matter where you're from. All right, the other crazy just the weekend. A helmet toss. We had the glove toss the fight and the bite now he got too sweets too. Linda scarred me. He could be a snapshot sometimes. At Coleman was going at it with random just ripped his helmet off and chucked it. Linda Scott comes in just pummels his countrymen. I mean, these guys have been on the same national teams together. And then there was a funny clip later in the game written and got a hat trick. See that? Someone's really handling it right in his lap. He checked it on the back of his head just like a two, three second clip, but absolutely hilarious. It was caves who put the hat on. Oh, who does say? I'm sorry. I think you said land as far. It doesn't matter. It was hilarious. It lands on you just throws it on backwards quick. It cuts off, but the abs are looking. They're starting to move now. And I knew cadre was good. That's why you always say if you can get cadre going if you could just play hockey and not be an idiot with these hits and these dirty plays that get some booted out of this playoff series. He's so good and such a difference maker. And now, I think it's 21 points in the last ten games or something like that. Rocketing up the league leaders in points and he's phenomenal. And to do all this without McKinnon shows this team should easily win that division. Going back to landy, you thought maybe things would calm down with them after you signed the big ticket? Absolutely not. He was going with Hartman. In Minnesota and preseason,.

"You wanna address and that we promised we won't look like hobos look cool and gives us that chance early out at some point you just gotta do it better off asking for forgiveness than permission sometimes just go into boots earlier in the interview. You alluded to the e sixty now. Could you tell us about any of that type of features that you guys are gonna have they all top secret going to the twelve to sit down with the vendor. Cain talking about the gambling saying that was you know we're not going to be afraid to do those stories for not going to be. You know we're just not going to be a pr and we're not gonna you know regardless if there's a big controversial story or something or indepth thing we're gonna we're gonna sit down we're gonna we're gonna talk about it or have that journalistic size and that's that's an example right there And so those are. The kind of stories won't shy wave math. There's a controversy going to take it on head on. We're not gonna you know we're not gonna we're partnered with the league for sure but we have to tell these stories in a complete transparent way and we will okay. I agree in an address to especially these guys who have like a half mile. Walk to work and picking up a coffee and it's like they got to put this monkey suit on. Just talk fifty put on this sweaty gross equipment. Anyways it makes no sense i to get to one other thing we've seen scott van pelt and sas stanford steve they've been doing the bad beats for awhile. Awesome segue those guys. Do you see more gambling. Talk given that teams now in bed. Casinos essentially and the whole concept of gambling has done a one eighty cents. You know fifteen years ago five years ago. Maybe even i certainly would like the sprinkle in the broadcast. There's over under situation looming late in the game. I it's talk about of absolutely absolutely you know those. Those empty matters are very stressful for people. The a huge john. I mean when they pull the pull them so early now right now. It's three minutes. Patrick was great. He was pulling. He's like five minutes. Left revolutionary no one before him he revolutionized jock lemaire would deal with fourteen seconds left and minnesota. He would not pull that. Only here comes wall with three or four minutes to go and he he revolutionized who changed hockey On the biggest. Coaching changes in the last twenty. Five years old. Patrick he was editors time i wanna say sportsbook haven't adapted to the in game line as far as when the goal is pulled to so they say it's one of the easiest thing to capitalize on far is making money and gambling and sports. Is that empty net while here. Yeah so when. I was in vancouver. I was just walking by a bunch of guys and there were a couple guys outside having a cigarette and they were like. Hey what's up listening to the podcast and they traveled then because this guy was doing this like gambling thing now. Ra might be like this guy's got him hook line and sinker but they said that that they basically had like a couple of them had like went part time on their jobs because they've made so much money in gambling on hockey puck lines like where they had like an algorithm down where they would all be in this like tex chain and they were basically drinking one of the guys cool eight and they were there to see him and he was kind of giving a lecture on it and how to keep capitalizing off it and and i don't know maybe the sportsbook all catch up now given that it's the gambling is kind of being elevated and it's everywhere but who knows ra. Here's your time to shine buddy. If they can't figure it out make up all that money. You've lost you may have to send it for one hundred year deal for that. But we'll we'll take the puck lyotard. You got to be clear because puck. Line is minus one one and a half or plus one and a half and i. I don't advocate betting the plus one and a half all. Because you know sometimes you one hundred ninety one hundred for a guy to be a team to basically lose boots you know you get on a half all if they lose you still win. It's like well if you like them a win then then take him for the money to win it. Just it's i just don't understand that as a gamble eight tweets his own but the klein. Yeah there is two sides to it when we say park by on the show it always means by one and a half because that's where the market is got perserve pressure but we will be more transparent with that suit on sir. I come to one of my. The point shows on calling a game. I'm doing it doing it from bagels opening nights and some there and doing one probably from that studio so we'll try to bring something that nice with what are you gonna be out there While for opening night overnight game but we're going to do the point that the day before the day of the game from the daily ways your studio in vegas and that will happily arena and call the game at night. So and sean mcdonough and ray ferraro have the tampa bay game the first game lightning penguins when they raise the banner. That's our first. Espn game since game. Seven two thousand four cup finals calgary and tampa bay okay but they had our last game anno four towards was the coach and now they have the first game here with torts in studio for us. That's great to sean mcdonagh's gonna garage. Shit he's awesome on play by play now. I think he's going to be great well. You mentioned you're going to be.

"Clinton gates we at the undefeated telling stories that remind people who we are as a culture is living breathing entity in all parts of american society. It's not just history books and social media y'all we contain multitudes and everyone deserves to be heard so listen follow and let's have a conversation. Listen or follow black history always wherever you get your podcast andrea. I mean this is a game. Am fans expect to win. And and what's interesting about. An is their their schedule is very back. Loaded in fans or just obsessing over that alabama game. But you have to play the game. You understand that as an athlete. How do you. How do you mentally get ready for games when you know. You're a huge favourite. You know there's probably not much chance of losing. And in spite of what your coaches tell you. What's the mindset When when you when you have a game like this to start the season out of the players that i talked to yesterday. I talked to kenyan green on the offensive line. I talked to leon. O.'neil senior who's in the in the back field on the defense and both of them like they're approached. They feel like they were snubbed. Last season and so for me as an athlete. I think what i would think. Is you take every game extremely seriously because for them. It's not about beating kent state. It's about how they beat can't stayed. It's about the plays that they make against kent state. Ken state's got a strong quarterback dustin chrome he is not a nobody he threw for over a thousand yards in four games last season so i think that they're taking the approach. How do they win. Games what do they make. Can they make a statement because they've got a chip on their shoulder so i don't think it's going to be hard for these guys. Get fired up for any of the games on their schedule. Even in the beginning of the season. Under before you go. I want to elaborate on that. Because athletes with a chip on their shoulder or not that is not on that is not uncommon And it usually shows the mark of of a really great athlete and a really great team knows what didn't happen right to previous year. How how does that play into the psyche of of trying to have a banner year which am fans are counting on. I think it's just energy. It plays into it because the energy that they bring it. And there's the passion that they play with even tighten jalen watermark today. We talked to him and he said they bring it. Every day in practice they treat practice like a national championship game so that chip on their shoulder. It's like fuel to the fire so texas a. and m. fans. They can definitely get excited. Because these guys are taking every little thing seriously. They felt like they had a great season last year and didn't make the college playoffs and that really means a lot to them. It hits them hard. And they're not gonna forget about it. Thanks so much andrea. Carter joining us from kyle field. That game is to morrow night. Am and can stay. We are racing through so many great this afternoon. We're not done yet. Laura rutledge will join us next listening to the paul. Finebaum show podcast. Laura rutledge rejoining program. And laura sean mcdonald chairman of guy. I know you're a couple of hours. You guys are friends with him and he was walking away. He's i got a bone to pick with you on my going. Sean sean mcdonough doesn't have bones figured anyone right usually. Yeah i mean. I really did not like what you had to say about. Reese rutledge paul that things making some waves fired reese as a as a picture on the show because she picked clemson and listen. Like i'm with you. But what i will say is what if reese is right. I think we need a wager that was. That was the quintessential laura being. I say the word on the air. But it wasn't that i had. I didn't care if it was your daughter or anybody's anybody's baby. Meghan markle's dog. I really didn't. It didn't matter to me. I just wanted to fire someone that had been so long like you really have been so incredibly gracious to everyone firing anybody. I felt like i was glad about it because it felt like we got back to vintage. Finebaum is start firing people. I don't care that you fired a twenty two month old but whatever. You're such a savage though. I know we set a record. The thing is like hey to break you. But she's picking the miami alabama game tomorrow so she actually is not fired yet bugger. We'll talk about it for next week. Reese if you're watching. She's watching your. I don't know how to describe myself in department. Usually your uncle paul. But i think i'm too old to know your god. Okay godfather. i actually think that sounds like a good segment for your show godfather feinban so i i feel like we've all asked the same questions over and over again. That always happens. The first we talk season. We did this show last night. I'm sure tomorrow morning. Sec nation will be completely different right. Yeah we got none of these same topics. I it is funny. Everyone sick and talking about the same stuff over and over again. We're in the same boat for hours a day. But but that's the beauty of the eve that we're on right now. Obviously we already had college football even beginning Even last week. Sec football started last night but it feels like tomorrow is the real beginning of it. I think we're gonna know a lot with what we see. And i with all due respect. I mean we're inside right now We won't be inside again until the sec. Championship game and there. There's something about getting out again. And i know you you dealt with covert last year on the show and and you were. You were doing what from. I was doing a little studio in bristol connecticut. It didn't quite feel like the sec. I know that's a shocker. Everybody paul. I'm so excited to your point. Just even seeing the few fans that are milling about here at the college football hall of fame. It brings the joy back that we love so much. And that's why we do this. That's where we are here for. I think to go back on campuses again to feel that vibe to be amongst people to be able to talk to these fans about their teams. I can't wait. I just thought as you were talking and you kind of have a montage. Your mind and i was thinking about all the experiences on college campuses and the audience could just give me a second here. I thought of what i think is the most the memory that is etched in my mind. The most it was maybe the first year you are on the show of the second. I can't remember and we had a quick getaway. And i kept telling you we gotta go. And i'm looking at my phone..

Look the set over there behind. The camera is our sit. Which is this nine hundred. Sixty five chevy pickup truck that they bought and blow torched in half and turned into our set. and we. Just don't even know how to articulate. I want to ask you about. I find your your story so fascinating and i know you. You did a book about two years ago and you talk about it. From time to time. This conversation we had earlier. We ran into each other and i. It really inspired me. I mean you. You're doing things that. I don't think even you've quite sure But but you put it. It's not easy to put things in perspective. But i i feel like you. You have things pretty good perspective. Well thank you. And it's you know. Everything's a journey for all of us right and and i've been to have had such a unique path at espn to a nascar specifically first and then doing reporting in college football and other sports throughout this entire thing and then hosting sec nation. A couple years ago. When laura was on maternity leave and and then last year doing sidelines during cove. And so i've i've had such a unique path and along the way a lot of insecurity and a when you realized that you're driven by ego. It's a very unique moment. And very revelatory for you. And then you're able to really kinda dissect dad and build yourself back up. So that's kind of been the journey and i'm just really full of gratitude to be here with with this group of people during this season and start with bama miami. I mean what's what's better than that. That was struck. A i know you. You talk to on. Initially she nation last night. But we brief conversation with lou combs. And i'm just listening long about how this song came came about. And he said yeah i. I've finally left. It was happening. So i called margie. Smith show now. I'm thinking already. You're you're you're you're running nashville. It was a crazy story. It was about three years ago. I've known luke for quite a while i actually. He and i became friends before he became the guy who's first twelve singles went number one. This never happened in the history of the format and and he calls me out of the blue a couple of years ago. And he's like hey man singleton and myself we wrote. The song's called south on. Yeah i want you to listen to it. I want you to get it to the sec. And i was like what so. Listen to it and i knew it was perfect. They wrote it specifically for the conference. And the end the tradition and the pageantry and the passion of the conference. So i took it to espn music and it went down the road. He calls me back. he said. Hey man you know that song. Call off the dogs. I wanna put it on my record. And i was like dude. I'm way down the line here and then last year. When i had cova during thanksgiving tom i was struggling. Not even want to is open. I was in so much pain. And my phone's ringing ringing ringing and our peak over at and it's him. And i answered. He's like what you doing. I said man. I got code. Don't feel good what do you want. He said south on you. Let's get it to the sec. We've been down this road and we really went down the road. Tom mccollum and pete waters our bosses at the sec network and we really put it into full throttle. they love the messaging. They love the vibe. And here we are. He's the official song of our network this season and it's just awesome because he is just his whole thing. His whole brand is very se and so. I'm just thrilled that it worked out for him. And we're going to have that song on esi nation every saturday morning school i. I'm pretty I know everybody has a friend or two. That's that knows somebody but the the number the number of people that you know. I'm with you a couple of years ago. I'm trying to get back to you know. Get home in time for you. Know maybe takeout pizza. Yeah so where are you going more. I'm going to dale juniors wedding i mean the world according to mardi a pretty interesting well. It's just a great blessing and going to go. See luke play a country music. Show tomorrow night Going to leave here and he's he has his first stadium. Show tomorrow night. A kid brewers stadium up at apple. He actually went to college. And i'm trying to figure out a way. I need to call a purpose. Can get on wheels up deal eric. Church is opening his tour in referenda on the eighteenth. That's another one of your Or the seventeenth is. That's another one forward your book. He did write the book. That man saved my life. He did When i lost my dad man. I was going through a real hard time and i just needed a vehicle to carry my emotions. I was really confused and conflicted. I had a very complicated relationship with my daddy. And i just struggling. And eric's i record centers like me was that vehicle. I needed to really carry those emotions. And when i got the opportunity to tell him that when i hadn't even met him yet. It really impacted him and we built a friendship from that moment on and i was just talking to him earlier. He's maybe i shouldn't say what i was about to say. You might see him tonight on a football football game. Well the only reason. I know that i'm on a plane couple of years ago to connecticut. I'm going through philadelphia. And you're getting wh what are you doing. Here are going backstage with eric. Chief me i'm like trying to come with me something. I don't know anybody anytime. You're the face of the sec. That has see the. You don't know anybody. People know you. I tell people i know finebaum like this guy here. Look at him look how happy he is to be on your program. "Joke with this song. I can't stop laughing. Now thank you sean mcdonough. I appreciate that all right Getting back to this issue. Listen the left always needs a battle to fight and they're up to it again this time they're using our kids to wage a war against us and their ultimate goal is to get more power so this are s. I don't even know how to pronounce this correctly. So these purveyors panic getting timely a timely assist if you will from what's a legitimate medical concern and that is this are as v it's called respiratory sin. Cecile virus and. This is a common childhood. But i've never heard of this a common childhood virus. We've live with forever. That has likely gotten worse. Because of the very policies the left is trying to push by exploiting this this new narrative. Their children are being. I mean hospitals are just being overrun with children. Rhonda chances our governor gave some recent numbers. And i believe the numbers were slightly less than The the amount of percentage wise slightly less of the amount of children that were in the hospitals at the peak of covert when we didn't know what we were joined last year. And we still acting as if we don't know what we're joining. Governor governor descent is a leader a loved that he's our governor. He's waging war on these school mass mandates. Now do have to say this. We live in a federalist system. I don't think this is a war. He can win because if we flip the script and we had a democrat governor. We wouldn't want the democrat governor telling local municipalities. What they can get. The answer is us. We gotta get these fools out of office. We rely on our politicians so much. Thank god for governor detained. He's standing up for the everyday man but the job is ours. Democrats lean on their politicians but an they rely on welfare. Unfortunately but this. Rsv it's so convenient. So we are experiencing a massive out of season surge in cases of rsv which is actually outpacing kobe. In terms of the positivity rate anyone can get this rsv but it is usually only dangerous to some infants and young children this according to the cdc fifty eight thousand children are hospitalized every year from this virus and we already know that the viruses raging particularly right. Here where i'm at in the south and that hospitals are already reporting an unnatural surge. These children are going into the hospital with rsv and contracting cove it in the hospitals. I'll finish out with this tomorrow. This is carl jackson and for larryelder until next time. Don't grow where you're going. Good god bless you from the left coast to the right coast. "In america in this pamphlet and he had it and he didn't even fly that often. And i just i like the travel. I liked the airlines the time and he would reach out to me when i first started doing. Nfl you say. Are you taking the eight twenty-five embry air out of kansas city to get all the yes. Why would you know this man. And he just had weird knowledge unbelievable. That's so great is this. Is this a little downtime. Few because as we know you do the nba on tnt and you have the nets during the regular season and now obviously nfl on cbs. Oh is this a little break for the birdman or do you still have some things going on in these next two to three weeks. Now it's been a break to me. I've had a good time. All we went away. I've done some day drinking which does not take place normally during my everyday life from september through the end of may it. It's rare that i drink at all over the course of the season but then i go the other way during the off season i think i try to pack as much as possible. And then turn the switch off when when the season gets underway. So yeah it's been. It's been quality downtime. Your old partner bill rafter. He would be proud to hear that. I've been out with him a number of times. I have seen him on four or five occasions. And i think he likes this version of me. Better have a little a little lie. Just yeah he He's he's doing great. He's feeling great. He's it's amazing he mazing. He is a freak of nature. They're they're gonna they're gonna study him for science for sure when i had and we'll get into some some professional things b-uh let's keep it light right now. I had sean mcdonough on the podcast recently. Yeah last month and he told a phenomenal raft story about which you've probably had this experience as the same trump said they were. They were on the road. I think he said they were doing a notre dame. I'm not one hundred percent sure for monday. And when it was over they go to to the airport to get the rental cars and raft is looking around for the car and he can't find it and this is going on for several minutes and mcdonough finally system. Did you by any chance. Go out drinking the night and leave the car there. Because you didn't want to drive after you add few pops raftery. Oh yeah. that's what happened to the car. A yeah i i have one. That always goes back into my thought process with him there. So many and yes. I have heard that story. And i've heard bills version of that story. Which basically mirrors sean version but has who would know forgot about it. He was doing the nets and espn and he was criss crossing the country. And the enza doing a game with me in san francisco but he flew in the day of and he had done a wake forest game day before he really had no right to do both but he just was packing and and he gets there and he's working on no sleep and ends up. I think i've told you. Parts of this story where he ends up in. Michael coren the radio analyst. Mike it already checked out just to do some notes on his bed. I wake up hold on yards so we eventually get to the game. And we're now doing the first segment of the of the pre game and lead into him in regards to the nejd. Derrick coleman going against the warriors and wrath looks at me and and he just starts singing..

"To its community of players and fans the nba is always pushing new boundaries and athleticism style ideas and more. Obviously there are many many many examples of that game on and off the court on the court. Obviously there's steph curry's last second win in the three point contest. That's game lebron. James winning the nba title in his hometown of cleveland. After coming back. From miami. With cleveland down in this series to golden state and then lebron ends up pulling off the comeback in cleveland. That's game off the court many examples as well russell westbrook making the cover of g. q. That's game and donating three thousand meals to houston during their crisis. That's game as well. The road to the nba finals is on. Don't miss a moment. The road to the nba finals continues watch the nba playoffs now. All right time for the weekly train of thought segment as always joined by my buddy from wfan and new york. And as in weiss alicata south has great great to be with you again here as we continue on through the weeks of the summer. Now you must be loving. This hot weather can't step outside for two seconds without swayed me randolph. It's a big problem. He said that the problem is the problem. Is you really. You've got to have a plan like you've got to minimize how much you're going to be outside unless read a pool or beach right and inside you know you. Just stay in the air conditioning. That's you know people say they do all this stuff in the summer. Yeah i stay in front of the. I put it on sixty three and i sit in front of it sixty three. Yes wow temperature. Sometimes at night. I go to sixty two what i got these higher. I will gotta be freezing. I go to sleep. I don't mind it usually for us. It's like sixty eight Emmanuel's pretty cold to me. I sixty three hole. I'm not fooling around my jacket next time. You invite me over for barbecue. In the summer i try to keep like a meat locker in here so obviously the only story anyone cared about. It seemed like over. The weekend was the rachel nichols maria. Taylor brouhaha that the new york times broke. I wrote about it in wednesday's train of thoughts. And what i found. I found a lot of things interesting and i think there's a lot of layers of nuance to it and i don't think it's a pretty straightforward story. But i will say the fact that he is pm thought they would be able to cover it. Up is what. I find amazing because this happened last year and if not for someone leaking into the times last week or whenever nothing would have happened. Rachel nichols this. Espn knew about this. Last year..

We're gonna meet in front of the hotel sunday morning at ten o'clock lol drive to the little local south bend airport non-road in will dump two cars jumping up so as i'm coming out there's jay on time matter of fact always early. He's already blown out of the garage. It's freezing cold. It had been snowing bill. I'm getting my car. Bill is walking around the parking lot with the key thing like this looking at all these hotel parking. All the cars look the same. They're all lama rental car. So i didn't. I'm pulling out. Bill is still going down every breath. It's freezing Built getting getting. So what are we looking for. But he's idle. No it's white. You know it's a taurus. Whatever we drive by car. I said by any chance renewed here thursday night. Did you have a couple pops at dinner at their aparicio's leave your car at somebody brings you. Yes yes. so we're turning. Restaurant is car is covered license ninety. Couldn't like couldn't get in of overeating. Was sitting there trying to bangel so to the point about you know being the first one that did he is in a lot of time. Who's just totally an inside joke. Which is probably professional. But we come on the air. Monday night welcomed marquette blah blah blah connecticut in marquette. I'm sean mcdonough. Along with jay bilas and the star of dude. Where's my car mastery. You know it's like no one. No one has any idea what that means. we did. But i'll back but just how that's tremendous I know you know loved by everybody where he got the final four gig At a as i say them all. Nobody's commish more in their eighties. And you bibi. Which is a joke figures in his early seventies bucket to get that opportunity. I was so happy he wins. The sports emmy know it's like he didn't even know he wanted call immediately. Changes the subject to something else you know. He's the best. I miss working with him a lot. Yeah that's a great story. I appreciate on yet. I have had him on. I've had them on. And i said that so fast. He had a great moment with him. Cbs had it was before the tournament. Cbs always has breakfast. With all the announcers. Play by play in manhattan. And i was talking to him in i in and i sit rates yes for sure and i said too i said to raft. Is there any way you'd ever join twitter. And he said no. And i'll tell you why he said because i'm afraid i'll have ten drinks at night and then tweet something in lose my job and that i i tweeted that quote and people could not get enough of it. I mean it was just typical. You know the epitome of bill de the do twitter but he's the best at all just an example on the we do does the final four obviously now with jim nance grant hill tracy wolfson and they i been doing international feed. Espn has the broadcast rights. For the rest of the world matter of fact that gonzaga play was on espn on one hundred countries around the world but not united states so they get access to at the final. "That's different nfl Nfl as much. I think nfl great. I watch it but But the atmosphere is different for sure. Build up to the game. You know the all the traditions various casses. it's funny. It's funny because but i remember about that two year run you had there. I i don't re- i mean listen. You would know it because you lived it. I don't remember if someone system. Sean mcdonough monday night football. I don't think of the narrative that anyone thought you aren't big enough for it. I do remember what weren't there a lot of. I don't wanna use her controversy because that's really strong but there's a little blowback because you would have our the officials sometimes and i. Don did you get heat from the nfl from espn. Yeah i'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Nonsmoking no no what it yesterday. I never said hey you need to back off on you know. I definitely no in from the league ever directly said but you only know you get the sense that the wasn't happy about the narratives. You know the the ending of of my tenure. Monday night with leonard. Football was strange. Because ill when i got the job the money job john skipper president of espn john. Wild hack was basically the number two and john. Kennedy hired me on wild hack. And then he left very shortly thereafter shadowed objector at the heart of central new york syracuse university and at the end of our second season. You'll remember this. Espn convened a big powell at all the town sports. The bristol basically gave us pep talk. It was john skipper connor shell because the narrative around then was that the slide and in l. day actually did a great job. Telling you don't believe it. We're not gonna lose this property and metric we're going to bid on that when a try this bubba blah you'll the futures brighton. Disney's doing fine and so i i saw stupor on the way out and he kind of padding on the back and said you know you're doing a great job of above above it right up there really feeling good and then a week later. He resigned within days of that. Jon gruden announces. He's leaving and going back to coaching. So no one really knew exactly who was in charge. You know we had several management people who all had kind of similar levels titles They brought The great george bodenheimer back. But he was just you know. they're mixture. The bill catch on fire ill. He didn't wanna make decisions. Like that buys owners is the greatest of the great john. All the people you vetting this job. Who do you admire the most would be. There's no bad meyer morning again. But especially for what he's doing now with the foundation of just such a charitable guy morning but be slightly at that playoff game bob earlier which is bruins last day. "It just didn't match with what i thought i was there to and what i typically done in my career to earn the opportunity to beat it. I'm used to interacting with bill raftery. Jay bilas i think if you know i've i was sitting there with them. I don't think people's perception would have been while this is too big of a. He's not meant to do this so again. Not meaning to be critical gruden or everybody else I understand white length away of did. But i just knew it was not a great dynamic Based on this thanks might strengths and kind of way the broadcast went. Did you break but ambassador. Have the chance to do it on. But did i think that. I think we were bad. No thought it was fine but it could have been great. it wasn't. Did you ever have a moment during a game or anytime in year one year to where it hit you like. Oh this isn't working or you know we're not meshing. The first right there was one or two. I did was in washington steelers in washington in there. There were one or two times. I said something that i expected would elicit a response in it. Didn't and i just thought to actually to the point. Where i thought didn't hear me and mike rico. I talked to. Mike and mike was my predecessor. As a really good friend actor syracuse days We kind of overlapped. He was coming in. Just as i was leaving. But we've been friends since the mid eighties in one of the things at when i stopped was he said you need. When you're gonna have your address. John need to make sure that he had his attention because he's because he does do the replace a lot news time season conversation with truck as you all probably people listening to this probably into broadcast. The we have buttons on her headset. Will we can talk to the truck. director graphics people. Remember it legged senator. Tom and we can say hey. Nothing happens after this play. You get a shot of coach. I wanna tell that story about blah blah. So that's why a lot of times it's really insane because the talk back button is really important. Tool in janis. Did exceedingly well but a lot of times. You don't know if someone's talking to the other guys year of the other night Be willing if you weren't right while itself So i think there were times when actually i was saying something him. Someone else was talking to so that that's going to happen. But i've had it happen to me or someone analyst saying something to me that they expect their response in the producers talking Sending here so yeah there were. There were a number of times when it will uncomfortable across that way on the is is to hear me say there. Was there ever a conversation. I'm i'm taking my share of the of the blame for the fights that didn't go well physics laboratories effort in in as i said. I don't think it was terrible but i i think it could have been better. "Back anything. Stand out to about why. It didn't work out anything you'd do differently. Well we tried to half are just on this. I don't know china have come up. You know when. I got hired I remember thinking. I called still in working with prior to that in use on the first people i called after my family. They offered to me in the senate. I just took the money in football job. I wonder if i made a mistake. Well college the borghese phone. No you didn't make mistakes. Monday football you have to do it and of course you have to and i'm glad that i did say yes in about. I did it when i was hired. Part of what. I was instructed to do was to try to make it more conversational Make it a little lighter. Bring out more. Jon gruden personality that used to see from climate time. Excuse me on that quarterback show that he did Gb camp um when he when he do a half hour every half hour special all the quarterback prospects and they'll get more storytelling. Which is something that. I've done a lot of koch launch Join costs much. More storytelling for the most part people watching don't know much about the players whereas you know when you're watching nfl game. You really don't wanna know tom brady. S a stamp collection. So he'll mitzvah. It's really not a part of presentation so but i think would be totally candid. Jon gruden enjoyed the show. I call this played ninety six wanda blah blah in the loved telestrator and he told me when i got the job. I don't likes to burgess hill. But he so he didn't want the stories and he didn't really want to engage in conversation. There were times when i would ask them questions. Make a point where he didn't respond. And i think it was just because He was so focused on gonna diabetes play in he. He just didn't wanna do it so there were times when i came across it off the awkward awkward as for me. You know. you're standing there next sunday wondering you know if i asked him a question about this is gonna answer it or is he gonna be annoyed that i asked him or so. It wasn't you. It was uncomfortable. The part of you know now the part of the bothered me. Was you know the narrative sunk people in your line works Must have been a little too big for mcdonagh you know. I did the world series. When i was thirty. I don't think anybody thought i was nervous. Out of place. Maybe a few people did and then all of these other events that we talked about It wasn't but i felt like i was nervous in on the old. This is minor football. 'cause you know big gig. I'm not sure i'm capable of this. You know. I think if we had and i get i'm not. This is not meant to be critical. Jon gruden review is great at that aspect of it. What he wanted to do. It's what the producer director you know. That's when you're putting up replace Need to talk about them. no it was. The direction of date chose to go in most of the time. Which i understand you know. John's the analysts. Db's in analyst driven medium. That was his strength. They played the strengths. That made sense..

"You know that was the big payoff for me. Is the chance to do the the final four times. Hopefully in the as i said in the next seven years what do you make of. I mean for those of us who cover media in media nerds and follow this stuff. Obviously hockey's ratings popularity in america. You know our. I've always been sort of a narrative and you know the considered the fourth major sport. If but if you're going by what the numbers say they're not i mean college football would be in that mix before the nhl. I'm just curious. Do you think it's just a matter of the league. Getting back on the espn. That's going to give it a huge boost orders. The league need to do other things. Because i think i think you can't even quantify how big it's going to be to go from nbc sports espn but is it as simple saturday. You think there's some other what you make about trying to increase the numbers there. I'm surprised that they're not fired. Just because i love it. I think sport has never been better in terms of the way. It's play in the speed. They made some rules. Changes in recent years. A really helped the trap which was not very attractive and appealing. That's eight from a spectator standpoint has gone away. The players are though so big strong fast. Skilled that i'm surprised. The ratings are what they are. i do think. Nbc has done a fantastic job. I think they've set a really high bar for us to try to get over in a lot of them will be attorney some of our place to helping our coverage. But you know i. But i just think to. You're playing jimmy the volume of what we're able to do it. Espn because we are twenty four seven and we have all these different networks platforms. We are going to be able to give the sport a lot more exposure than it's had in recent years so I think that'll help. We have a lot of you. Saw press release by talked to the people who are part of this group nor vian in mark gross. Mike maclay did a phenomenal job assembly. I think a really talented team that will do a great job of being passionate enthusiastic about sport and hopefully helping to grow the game. Because i do think it's great product. But i don't know why more people aren't coming to it but hopefully they will. That's part of our job. I mentioned the list of sports and leagues. You've you've call eight even touch. Obviously golf tennis or in the mix. You've done that as well. Olympics bobsled deluge. Perhaps lie about the boban. How long did it take you to learn the rules. For the bob's did i can imagine four. Cbs is in albertville lillehammer. I actually went to lake placid and spent several days up the bob slipping blue shield trading quarters to meet. The people have people explaining the sport. They're really not that complicated. I mean july now on a sled. Try not to move at all. You know the the they told me the best luger. It'd be a dead person writing. Because the more you fight it Kind of slows led down so you could just be a blob but down the mountain. That would be the best way to go but that was really a fun experience too but i enjoyed the hockey more in in nagano. In ninety eight i. I'm sure the hockey was a little more exciting than the lose. But i mean it's funny because you say you say lowly hammer And i think one thing and one thing only which is.

"Goodyear more driven. Earlier we had Michael Rothstein on talking about the Lions point of view is Matt Stafford now joins the L. A Rams. This is from ESPN. NFL insider Adam Schefter, who first reported that the lines will send their long time quarterback to the Rams in exchange for two future first round picks, a third round pick, and quarterback Jared Goff. Now, George Sedano with ESPN. Ella joins us to talk about things from the Ram side, George. Great to hear your voice, man. How are you? I'm great. Hope you were well. And you and yours are all safe. Yuhas well, and certainly we have to talk about this trade. Matt Stafford. That era ends in Detroit and the golf era ends with the Rams as well. Your initial impressions when you heard this trade Not surprised Les need. I'm sure everyone's heard the press conference he had earlier this week about not really committing to Jared Goff saying he's a ran for now. That's certainly got people's attention, and we had less on our radio show My afternoon drive show on ESPN Los Angeles. That same day, and we pressed him and It seemed fairly evident at that point that Jared Golf was no longer going to be a ram. And I'm not really surprised. I mean, you can go back further than just that press conference. Really? If you look at short, Big day, Historically, he never runs his players under the bus. Never never calls them out publicly. You know, his relationship with them is so great in that locker room because he never does that. And after the Miami did this season, the Rams went to Miami. They had a bunch of turnovers. Jared fumbled the ball. He threw a ton of interceptions. It was the first time in all the years that I've covered Sean McDonough. Where he legitimately said This guy is the reason we lost. And at that point I'm like, Oh, there is trouble in the waters here for sure. So He had multiple games like that. Sean came on our show during the season after that game and really didn't make any excuses for Jared like he was very much In line with making Jared understand that he was the biggest culprit in some of their losses. So I'm not really surprised. Jared hadn't had good years here the last couple of years, at least not Way he had previously when he led them to the Super Bowl. And we have a situation where it seems fairly evident that Sean McVeigh got the best out of Jared Goff, and he no longer had much useful. About Stafford being the one that comes to the Rams your reaction with the Lions making this deal with the Rams, and you know there were other quarterback names out there. I'll look at the Shawn Watson. I know that there's a lot of question marks still there. But what do you make of the Rams pulling the trigger? If Matt Stafford I think it makes sense. First of all it Brad Homes with the Lions general manager is from the Rand Street, He worked for less need. Who's the general manager of the Los Angeles Rams? So You think it was just an easy deal for them to make because Brad obviously part of the scouting department that you know work on drafting Jared Goff, number one Overall, he might have been part if I recall correctly. He was also part of the group that gave him a big contract. But you look at Matt Stafford. And you're looking at a guy who He's tough as nails right place through injuries is certainly got a bigger armed and Jared Goff. He's certainly more mobile than Jared golf and he is desperate to win. And I think that that's the exact combination that the Rams wanted because the waves of the number one defense in the NFL, so they look at their quarterback situation and they have a very pedestrian quarterback at this point. Almost any metric. You look at Jared Goff, and he's probably in that bottom third of starters, Where's Matthew Stafford is probably closer to that top 10 rage. He may not be in that top 10, but he's right there. He's in that second tier. I think of quarterbacks. That you can win football games with, especially if you've got the weapons around him. The Rams have the weapons on offense. They've got a good running game next one offensive line. They've got good receivers when everyone's healthy, which was an issue this past season and as I mentioned the number one defense and an excellent special teams. And by the way I mentioned showing the day earlier. You're talking about one of the brightest, smartest young coaches in the NFL. So I just think that if it makes all the sense in the world, it's a clear upgrade. Over Jared Ball, and I think the Rams felt like if they had competent to above average quarterback play. They could be the team that's in the Super Bowl next week. I think the Rams went up a few 100 point thing. It was like, plus 1200 or something to that effect. When this trade God announced now how much of an immediate impact do you see here? How much of an immediacy overall Do the Rams have now that they have a star quarterback like Matthew Stafford and all the positives that you say that Stafford will immediately be able to Inject himself into this system. Look, I think that if you look at Sean McDaid, he's a quarterback friendly a coach's You have right, like, think about it. They they brought in the guy John Woolford to play some chair golf. And played really well for them. This is a guy who you know was a German right like he was playing in the NFL prior to arriving with the ranch, and he got him to win. Off football game in the National Football League like that's how good they are, As far as their coaching staff is concerned, I know that Vincent changes there are a lot of guys have fled because if you stand next to Shawn Bebe, clearly you're gonna get a job somewhere in the NFL. That seems to be the case. But at the end of the day, the most important part is that Shawn is there and what you've seen from Shawn over the last couple of years, and his wife and Matthew Stafford and him, we'll gel really well. Is that The players in the locker room. Whether it's on the offensive side or the defensive side, they believe in him. They know that their coach is going to have them ready. You got the sense that the players in that locker room Didn't feel like Jared Golf was the guy to get them over the hump. Matthew Stafford is well regarded in the National Football League. For the reasons I alluded earlier, whether it's toughness, big arm, etcetera, etcetera. I just think that You get to a point in your career where you want to win, And that seems to be the case with Matthew Stafford. He's given the city of Detroit everything he could. So I just think it's the perfect marriage because you've got a coach who is hyper focused on winning. And you know it's doing over the Super Bowl loss He had a couple of years ago to the Patriots and his laser focused on that task. And now you have a quarterback who also is desperate in regards to winning. So I just think With that match. With the Rams being hyper aggressive in general as a franchise if you look at them historically because they've been in l. A, they have made big, bold moves. This is a perfect setup for everybody. George Sedano with ESPN ELA joining us here on SportsCenter all night. Last question for you. When you look at Jared Golfs career with the Rams from start to finish. What do you think? How do you think we will think of Jared Jared Golfs tenure with the Rams when we look back on it. I think you look at Jared Golf as a guy who excels because he had one of the best young coaches in the sport and people forget Or maybe they don't. I don't know,.

"Toward the sideline. Did Sean McVeigh throw a challenge flag? Can't imagine they would have told him a challenge. There's the replays show it pretty clearly bounce yet. Charging. Action challenging the ruling on the field of an incomplete pass. Oh, my goodness. Now. Was it a couple of weeks ago? Where? Bill Bella check. It was the game in Buffalo challenged the call. And it was very obvious that they were not gonna win. The challenge he faced had a shot of him on the phone upstairs, just reading whoever it was, they told him to challenge it. I don't know who told Sean McDonough challenges, but this looks very clear that the ball hit the ground and bounced up into the hands of John Johnson. It's very clearly even see the car or whatever that black stuff is. Coming off the turf. But you know what? I would have a guy tell me upstairs if the challenge it or not, And I think I went down is the worst percentage wise winning challenges of any coach that ever but side get angry with him. I would yell at him, but he was trying real hard, too. But I just didn't understand some of this stuff. Those ground up rubber pellets. They used this right, You saw it. It's like, Yeah, Yeah, This should be a pretty quick review. And it is John Husi is already on his way back out. And neither team is taking a punt team off the fields. You do not want to lose a time out that way, though, go on the field stands. It's an incomplete pass. Los Angeles will be charged a time out, and that is the first challenge. They have one left. Well, I don't think especially in a game like this. That just doesn't feel like it come down to a final possession. That's a time out. You may need in the fourth quarter. Absolutely. There's very, very valuable. And I could see it if it was questionable, But that one was pretty clear. Here's the snap to Michael Dixon Dixon with an end over end punt. Webster moving all the way was right. He's got into the 17 yard lot of the far side back across the 20 over the 25 yard line. He is hitting dropped there. Now there's a penalty flag down as well was thrown by the official here. All the near side. 54.
