Bills safety Damar Hamlin released from Buffalo hospital
"More than a week ago, Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle during a game in Cincinnati. His doctors in Buffalo say they completed a series of tests. Sean McDermott is Hamlin's coach. Grateful first and foremost at his home and with his parents and his brother, which is great. I'm sure it's felt like a long time since he's been able to be home. The doctors who treated him in Cincinnati say it's a remarkable recovery. McDermott says Hamlin's job now is to continue that recovery. For us, as to Mars dad is said to us multiple times and tomorrow is mentioned as well. They want us to go do our job and that's what we've got to do. The bills are preparing to host their division rival Miami Dolphins in a wild card playoff game Sunday. McDermott says it will be up to Hamlin if he wants to visit the team. I'm Ed Donahue

Bills' Hamlin breathing on his own, joins team via video
"Buffalo Bills safety demar Hamlin takes another step in his recovery after going into cardiac arrest Monday night. The ancient Ford tomorrow Hamlin says the bills player is breathing on his own and able to talk after having his breathing tube removed. Hamlin even joined the bill's team meeting Friday morning via video conference. He used mostly hand gestures to communicate, but used as voice to tell his teammates love you boys. Bills coach Sean McDermott says the players who didn't know about Hamlin's appearance started clapping and yelling when they saw him. The team says Hamlin's neurologic function remains intact. Is a little bit of like a sneak peek and how they feel that that what they've seen from him in the pre season and during training camp. You don't play a guy you know to 20 snaps in the preseason. Who's a rookie? Unless you're like this guy is one of our best players in defense. Um, if you told me right now, Gregory, so ends this season with double digit sacks. 10 10.5 11. I think I'd buy into that. I think I think I'd take the over at like 9 10 sacks. I think he can be that disruptive, but The defensive line is a whole does feel a little predicated in terms of people's Belief in their ability to stop the run. And what we could probably get into whether or not stopping around actually matters at some point in the show or some point this season because teams are going to run against the bills because they can because the bills want them to run against them. Can we? Can we say that right? Like if you're Sean McDermott, Leslie Frazier. Every single time. Herbert. Uh, name some good F C court named some great quarterbacks whenever you're playing Patrick Mahomes, Ryan Tannehill. Maybe not. In that case, their country is really hard to stop. But I would think that every time these elite quarterbacks turn around and hand the ball off. Sean McDermott and Leslie Frazier. Like Exactly. Yeah, let's get to let's get down into the in the goal into the red zone. Let's tighten up. Let's hold teams to three points. We like our odds if we can do that with our scoring offense, So I think that the bend but don't break things. We've said a lot. Like maybe at nauseum. It's like maybe one of the worst football ISMs out there is bend. But don't break defense is, I think the bills really that that's her strategy, both from a defensive line linebacker. Corner safety. I'm uh, I think if you're if you're Leslie Frazier in your Sean McDermott every time an elite quarterback turns around two hands the ball off you are. They're doing exactly what you want them to do. He was reading a full game where it means something and where you're scheming him in spots to put him in. Opposition to have success and you really didn't get to see him with Jerry Hughes on the other end, Like like the Jerry Hughes, not like, Hey, it's training camp. It's preseason. He's a veteran. He's got a little tweaking The calf were really easing him in here. No. Now he's full bore, and now you're going to have an opportunity to see on third down. You know, Russo and Hughes on one end. You've got Mario Addison at the three technique and Calvert the one have at it, boys. You've got to really athletic, fast pass rush heavy unit out there. The other guy that I continue to think we're grossly under talking about is a J. F. Vanessa. I'm excited to watch up in ECE play. He's not going to have the same volume of stats are snaps that we see pews that we see Russo. But maybe do we agree he might be the third. Guy off that bench like he might be the first pass rusher in the game when Reus or he was earning well, last year, it was, you know, Trent Murphy and he's an active all the time and the bills just Really gotten. It was almost like corner, too was talked about a lot, But yet defensive end to was, I think probably should have had more attention. Um, I guess if you're going further down the depth chart past cherry hues With regard to this this pass rush. Russo, one of the things about him. He got a lot of his sex in college when he was inside, and that was kind of a little bit of a knock like, Well, he does really well inside. I'm not. You know, we don't know how he'll do around the edge. The reality is sometimes You hear that as a knock and I think, Well, yeah. Can I just scheme it on the inside? I got it Sounds like it sounds like I could just do. That Sounds like a you problem, right? I'll just get him and maybe scheme him on the inside in certain scenarios seen that yet either, And I think probably for a reason..

"I mean, at one point when he was playing for Sean McDermott, As the defensive coordinator and, uh, Starting in Carolina all the way to Superbowl 15. I thought he was one of the premier zone corners. And football and, ah They wound up playing Denver in the Super Bowl in Denver's defense, led by Von Miller was just too good that day, so I actually ran into Josh Norman. Um, that was the Levi's Super Bowl 50. And, uh, One night. Mm, NBC Sports Bay Area doing something probably warriors that time of year. And this big issue V comes rolling in in the parking garage and jump it out as Josh Norman. He came in to do co summer show. Do the, uh, do an interview and he was holding court and I thought you got the biggest game your life on Sunday. You're coming in here to do a local television show. Really? But that was kind of what he was, and he was full of himself, and he played well in the game, but they didn't play well, offensively. Obviously, cameras overwhelmed. And then that year, Marty Hurney But the franchise tag on them. And Carolina's was after not only make the Pro Bowl that year, he was an all pro first team corner that year. He was at the height of his powers. And, uh, he didn't sign that franchise tag for the longest time. And usually, you know, you just wind up waiting for the July 15 deadline to sign a long term contract and But my hard hit like it and Marty rescinded the franchise tag, which I don't I don't remember anybody ever doing that. So all of a sudden he's on the street and he winds up going to Washington. And he just wasn't the same player and we saw him last year. He wound up not playing against the 49 ers when he was a Buffalo bill on that December, the seventh game. But I thought he would be someone they would attack. He wound up being scratched. They checked Levi Wallace in that game. The other corner. So I think it's a little bit of and he got a little more money than veteran minimum. Not a lot. You have a need there. You know what's going on with the manual Mosley And you know if you do wind up playing cover one, I don't know if he can play press man to me. He was a really good zone corner, So if he's in the game, you'd have to almost treat them like Richard Sherman. But he's a veteran guy who's a ball hawk that knows what he's doing. And there are some people that are familiar with him in the building, so I'm a little surprised, but I mean, you know, when he was in Carolina, he was a state of the art zone corner. You could see him. His skill began to erode in Washington. And then last year, he had someplace he made some plays against Miami s on playing with the bills last year against the Raiders. He made some place, but We got to see where he said Physically, I don't expect him to be up. For the very first game of the year on your 47 Man roster examine. They're gonna have eight offensive lineman over the game. You go to 47 on Game day now, but Interesting signing. He is wearing number 26. It's It's not gonna be an away game, but it's gonna be a home right? And the funny thing is like you think about this. Stefon Diggs, who had the best year of his career, did it in front of nobody. You know, I mean, like He still is not. Yeah, I felt the energy that exists here on a game day Sunday at one PM I think he's gonna lose his mind. It's just No, it gets loud up in Minnesota, and it's an enclosed building and it gets super loud, But I don't know. I just think it's different here. It's more college like here. Just the the enthusiasm the energy. I just think it's more like a college Amazon. I mean, there are there are not only people with season tickets that are used to sitting with certain people that have been sitting next to for 15 years. There are people That has Tailgate neighbors. They make a point of meeting in a certain area of one of the parking lots. I got one. Yeah, I have a tailgate that I frequent. Um, it's my What's my golfing buddy? Yeah, he's it's a good friend. So he he pulls off a great tailgate. Um It's countless How many Things. That 72,000 people are going to be in that building. Um Remember and want to get back to. I mean, it's just sitting in that building on opening day this year is going to be special, and it's five days away, and we're sitting here talking about fans are and we've got our tweet sheet up here and And seeing people back in the in the building is just going to be awesome. Absolutely one of the I think it's going to be one of I've said this over the last And I'll say this. Since Kim and Teri took over, there have been about three or four moments. That were historic. That we're just like, way better than the stuff that I even got to go through as a player, some of it that breaking the drought right the way that transpired was absolutely phenomenal. It was one of the great all time moment that Karen Johnson pick six last year. This Baltimore was historic. Absolutely historic, Josh, you know, Josh jumping the guy in Minnesota. To like. It's it's it's like hit a switch in their heads. So i i would say i'd like a combination of both but i'm i think i think they're both good at but steeplechasing definitely has place Forgiving the horses that a new career in a new interest in the really enjoys. Tell me about some of the places that you've you've been to in your career From a young age us. I guess ireland is the is that known for harsh racing so Just from that as you get to like in great britain so you get go to these free festivals like cheltenham and aintree would be independent of the jump. Racing darla are in europe. I guess i punchestown ireland so They're quite tillis away. Where the young age. I was exposed. That and I i got selected to go to australia on an irish jockey team that i was nineteen to take on the australian jockeys call the irish. Are the jockey challenge and it's a big help to promote racing in australia and Yeah that was quite an experience. We i think we went through for maybe two and a half. Three weeks enrolled tracks in Toria melbourne and in south australia. So i'd late and Warner belen all all these great Rates meaning over there and they're very australians arrays passionate about the ratings great fun and it's great friends which subsequently some of major wage america harland's and I got the right in france Which was quite different than to seep the cross country races and now america as well so we tasted a lot of was He's like a fifty more experienced. Ironically so maybe after stopping what does the future. Hold for sean mcdermott. Are you planning on spending more time training the horses than writing. I know it's tough. Read do both right now. So what does the future hold. Who knows i keep training this band of horses and and yeah we we'll see what opportunities arise I'm not gonna join us for sure. I always say when i retire. I'd like to retire in orland or to go to my own parents at One of my favorite tracks there. If i could and So but the training as you said is taken hold. I don't really know I keep doing what i'm doing is like that We we will see what happens. Maybe maybe who knows. Maybe a good horses come along or maybe if you really good horses coming on and change my mind. I did this training for them. Yeah we it's all well at the moment we're gonna take it as it comes down to the final five minutes of the show shown I always like to wrap things up by asking trainers to tell me a little something about them. When you're away from the stable which you just pointed out it's very difficult to get any time away from the farm or from the race track right now but what other hobbies interests things. And i think it's a worldwide problem So i think a lot of a lot of trainers particularly trainers earn the same both I said if you're if you're training turkey horses or twenty five horses plus you can have your four men in your assistants And they can like today. One of those guys could come down here and do this and you can attend the the morning works and whatnot When you have a small number of horses it's You're stuck between a rock and a hard place A as i said the industry is finding it. Take me back to the beginning. Where tell me about growing up in ireland and tell me where the love of horse racing began for you. Yes i was born in Shirley and carrie and We live just outside town Always had animals on the farm. Whatever it was arses cows shave. Bits of everything going up so it was a good childhood kinda left your own devices Especially during summer holidays from school. That kinda twelve your bike and get lost and come back in the evening coats and bruises and my mother given to me because Yeah no it was very good childhood and my dad always had horses around the show jumping ponies and arts generals which he yes to move on after they became successful and yeah i my older siblings brothers and sisters wrote a little and i the youngest in the family so obviously if age releases for who turkey and fourteen to pony so when my brothers were getting old and my dad was Kinda looking at me thinking. I need to get this guy writing. So that's how it became a boat and I think he bought me a donkey. I to get me writing. 'cause i don't think i was. The brave is keen on getting on pulling these but the donkey work the trees and before i knew i was sitting at the site of arenas for hours q. Pony's too right. Yep a terrific game. It all starts so your your parents would encourage you to go down this path. My dad my mom not so much As i spent many a wednesday friday saturday. Sunday evening at shows with school in the morning and Again of course my mother would want the whole doing my homework. And i would be a waste. Maybe three four hours away from home with my dad showjumping so i thought that was a star Somebody definitely urged me my mom not so much But eventually i got a little bored of the show jumping in the pace of us and I went down nine cycle down the the really really thunderstorm weekday. I remember to local trainer. Tom cooper in ireland and I could give me a job. And i remember him kind of laughing at me this while thirteen year. Old kid looking for a job in the rain he. He's probably thinking why he tomorrow when it was dry. He got so tom to me up on a few horses. And i like to get runaway miss and all of that carry on but i love the bows of Of writing the race cars the power the steed and just going racing with them and watching them so I guess that's why. I vogue and i left the children behind little. How'd you learn to what's the key to making a horse jump. I mean how again. I've been on two horses in my entire life. So how does a jockey do that. Killing your eyes and kick him in the belly. No I don't actually the trainers in his job and given our confidence they don't Some are better than others. Some are more intelligent than others and Yeah you look you you learn to see us right and show being was a great background for that so if you're if you're if there's a long strategy you're always on your hearts to be going forward because it is a race and you're you're trying to fill him with confidence and you're probably setting them up for that. Training horses refers to himself as an accidental trainer. This is something he kind of fell into through his relationship with the late. Bob kinsley and now he is training the kinsley horses and doing very very well. He settled his first winter back on july. Twenty third at pimlico. A horse named favorite image. Who we talked about in the first half of the program and now looking to add. That success sean. How about that little trip down memory lane with that race. Call for you yeah. I was thinking of the country. Now thinking oh i know that race yeah. It was a great day. I'm a great heart. Certain great owner street like hanging. Charlie nolan charles. Been rick can. Yeah no eric jump straight meeting. Just sorta tennessee. If you haven't ever been there and just everybody going great a great day and a hell of a lot of prize magnon and really showcases for. You had a lot of success with that horse. It wasn't just those two wins in the iroquois. Didn't you win the grade. One lonesome glory with him to. Yeah that's right He wanted to lonesome. Glory his grade. One Connor hank in which is one of the owners of streets On our would be. Mike hankinson. That great i had won his earlier. Three grade ones And i i believe he's been recently retired. Talk about trainer jack fischer for a minute You mentioned you've written for him for awhile. He's one of the top steeplechase trainers in the sport. Tell me more about that relationship jacket into this show first of all. I think he's been known to tune. In so i mean jack of love hate relationship but a lot of respect for each other Yeah jack's keys I believe he's nominated for hall of fame This year is very good at what he does Fantastic facility and then. He's he has his side that he's been doing for years and obviously they work Yeah no we we. We'd a lot of success lot of winners together and Sure we live in the future. i Yeah so he he. He was very good to me as i said and Yeah we we we talk regular and it's usually a joke or a Common jacket and he. He's a funny guy. You know now that you're training horses sean. Have you gone to jack or any other trainers for that matter and can pick their brain about different things that might help you be successful on the training side of things No not with jack. I always tell him he was the worst teacher. I've ever met Which regards heat. I may have young kids in writing out and housing. I was undone he puts toughest harsh. They lighter survivor. They won't survive there Probably work working the industry for a while if they don't you just learn by watching act and I've always walked out with my eyes open and You know. I i i guess. I mainly learned ironic shipping hard. Who really long distances. Here and things like that Different stuff in the really hot weather. 'cause it's not something. We would experience in ireland. Ireland is only the size of i believe north carolina. So and you don't have the hot temperatures so i probably learned a lot of from jackson and medications is whether you can use different medications here and Stuff i got so sad. Yeah definitely take take pieces from him and use it for sure. What attributes does every good horse trainer possessed. John what's the key Well jack fischer it's perseverance He worked hard through the training season. But i've never seen a man to persevere with much at him I get you. I guess you you have the ones that are more successful. They never stopped thinking about harsh horses the horses and they're buying or maybe waited a harsh run badge So they're i guess they're obsessed a little bit Might not be great for the family life. If you're thinking about your horse at at as her nineteen night i I think you nearly have love says And i think a lot of really good trainers are with if they can get a horsey better way the our wrong bad or what mistake they made and they're not satisfied until they get the best out of that horse so i would say up session station You think you have that same quality Yeah i would i. Yeah i definitely. I i guess the hours i'm working No yeah no. I definitely care too much For the horses and not enough for my Yeah you and probably a little this A lot of still hours you work. It's not logical. You might have to be a little bit of a a looney tune in the hate as well. so yeah yeah we definitely. I definitely over overtaken until i can get a Rice but when you do it's a nice feeling you know when you see those horses that you've turned around and it's only a matter of if they're good enough then you know they will try their best to you in. They're feeling when their state has the in welland Yeah hopefully it all comes together. It's great that you mentioned the hours because there are people listening. And i think a lot of racing fans that see trainers in the winter circle all the time they think man. That would be so cool. That guy does so great or that girl does so great but there is so much that goes on behind the scenes countless countless hours. That you put in. What's your typical. Day like sean. You mentioned so many hours. What's it like. I started buying five. Am so we feed and some horses live out at night. So i will. We'll bring them in and the horses that stay in that nice day get turned out in the paddocks for a minimum of two hours. In the morning. I'm just to have a piggy grass and stretch their legs and be horses again and I'm basically writing out right through the morning until almost lunchtime and You know it's it's on..

"I think is there a proper way to fall that you've learned over the years to help you. Avoid serious injury sean. Is there such a thing. So or the horse kicking you so Yeah they do teach you away but it happened so quick it back. You know your brain can react that creek. You're trying to get into bowl curling. you're probably doing it. Instinctively voted in that at all. Yeah talking sean mcdermott. Who is a steeplechase jockey. Now training horses. You heard both of that story in the first half of the program. Second half comes your way in just a few minutes. But sean we do have a couple of minutes left before we have to get to that bottom the our commercial break. I think this fascinating. Because the next horse that i ride other than doing to trail rides is going to be my first and i can remember riding the trails with these horses and they kind of had a mind of their own and i was scared to death. I cannot imagine what it's like riding these horses going over jumps and then having something like that happened where you fall off and there are horses coming behind you. And the other. Riders had to adjust and they don't know. Put me on the other side of things. You already talked about falling. But if you're the jockey who's on the horse coming behind another rider that falls how do i mean what's the key to making sure that you don't trample that jockey. How do you do it Well horses are supremely intelligence Animals anyhow so i generally date will adjust probably quicker than you can And really gained dale already. Be trying to avoid the falling hard for the fallen writer. Sometimes they jump the heart that they jumped the writer. But you react is could you can too. You might see a horse. maybe make a mistake earlier. That's just getting taking chances in a race. Maybe getting a little bit longer. Maybe standing off to far from a heard leonard. It hasn't gone in and Adjusted it's up to two getting killed in a pop usually when they're getting a little bit. Why like. I'm you might just move one foot in one foot. I was offense. Exact track line and That might help you if that hard cider makes mistake or phones or whatnot so knowing you don't have much time to just the horses Definitely do a lot of hard work and make the duckie's look good so You know you said you're scared of writing. I wouldn't be the best that heights. And i remember one time and i thought the second time i did is i see a better know that verifies throw away all of our our our trip than i i. Guess yeah it's just incredible to hear you you tell that story. I have said for years for more than well almost twenty years now. Doing radio that that jockey's pound per pound are some of the toughest and most fit and strongest athletes. That you'll find in all of sports and when i hear you tell that story about learning a proper way to fall in a race and reaction time and making sure that you don't trample a fallen rider. Whatever the situation might be it. It just reiterates. That point shaw that the jockeys are such amazing athletes. Yeah well you know you have to be The horses bigger athletes Both the you are the more as you right. The better you take the falls and Yeah you're i always look at the jockeys as tactician in the heart of the athletes But yeah you definitely have to be fish. And it's a certain set of core muscles and like different muscles that i use the most other sports you know. So there's no fitness like Race writing really to to get you racist There's definitely quite especially in this age. As my her core people the the jockeys especially in england. You like dieticians and physiotherapists and all all great medicare laid on all for free and encourage houston definitely brought the next generation Stay ahead and i think it shows the professionalism and the results of those guys hopefully American follow suit and get on board with their flag is in a little like professionally fair. Yeah so Favorite images Quite a character of a horse and he's he's a good story behind him. He bob. It need to take on the project. He he asked me to come in and have a look at some of his stock in in his farm near york in in pennsylvania He had some notes from a previous I guess a trainer that i was working for him and favorite image was on. They get rid of list. I give away for. Free was actually the comments Because they thought he was a little small and he subsequently he as a yearling he managed to stick is in john. Deere lawn. Lawn more Y last kennedy's firearm So i very inquisitive horse. And i i believe that the guy in for lunch and more was left in the reach of some of these year and he took his foot in and gave half scar on the outside of his effect. Which doesn't affect them but it could have been very seriously so he carries the scar with them and We've nicknamed him. jd. After john deere so We're kind of hoping as a zone. Here's the he runs like a deer. Those yes. That was his start so he was an underdog but i liked the way he moved around the field and delay full so i thought he'd he grows some more but he has done now. He's he's i guess he's reaching the both sixteen to the moment he's sprung up quite late We started them on the dirt and he had a great time out. He didn't try very hard. Look around ten and He improved on his second start and his third star. Came off the turf. Which i kind of find it into goes i pimlico and I let us take a chance on the on the dark again and he. He didn't enjoy his Went to penn national shelf. Those so we we did find into way. pimlico And kevin gomez was very ever from the front end Tiny just write a raise from the front and and Gave a little bit for any taken. He he wrote him to a t. So we're we're we're very proud of Larson so Getting from an underdog winters. And or would i give away with the nice feeling. Yeah yeah what a great story. I love those kinds of stories about horses who people think very little of early on in their career and they turn out to prove everybody wrong. Y- can't sean you can't measure what's inside of a horse and i'm talking about their heart right you just can't measure that you know and Every every heart is different and we can long gain experience and listen to great blood dockage nauseam base and you know a lotta horses with our. Our legs turned one way or the other or ugly looking horses. I've seen the the back of a lotta them coming up the home straight and You might be on the previous horse and they might be able to run the fastest. And that's what it's all about arch is a big thing definitely and That he's quite intelligent so he wants he's. He figures that. I think he went a couple of. Yeah it's incredible. How many times do we see horses that sell for a million dollars or more and they don't turn out to be the type of racehorse that would warrant that type of investment but then we see horses like a favorite image who people think okay. You know he got hurt. He stuck his foot in a john deere lawnmower and we don't think he's going to be any good and all of a sudden turns out to be really really good. That's what that's why people get into. This sport sean. I'm sure that's one thing that's keeping you intrigued about training racehorses yeah i guess we had a hard psych horses like that of course you're trying to achieve their ultimate and Get them to be the best. They can be But if it wasn't a million dollar horse in the buying also comes with some pressure. I guess and There's no pressure with these horses. Kinsley family are are are great at the support. Us and Yeah you money. The horses never know how much they cost so Anybody can go out and buy a winner and win a few rays with them. But i think it's the really good trainers. Can i get one hundred percent of the worst horse and the best hearth and Placement as i think that's the key you know so Yeah so hopefully we can. can Mirror some of the trainers we worked for over the years and Take a little bit from each of them and get the best out of these guys. You mentioned the passing of bob kingsley. A couple of times throughout the show and he was somebody who was very close to you. I know that had to be difficult is his wife. Mrs kinsley as she as interested in the business as he was Yeah i think kinsley. I'm a great woman. And i think she was the backbone of kingsley operation and Yeah she's she's keen on racing. Not as not as much passion as bob but that would be very difficult because Bob had awful lot of enthusiasm energy and For life and passion so He loves his horses. Love his horse racing. So but thankfully mrs kennedy. He's carrying it on his memory. I'm so it it's great that we can get a few winters and make it worthwhile and make it enjoyable for bush Yeah he now. He's a wonderful man he. He was very generous And very donated a lot of money and time to people That was never known about and didn't want it to be no one about a great sign of a man and he's certainly a big loss Not only in the horse community but in definitely in pennsylvania maryland he. He did a lot of good for a lot of people. Throw bush and actually his family are carrying on his his methods and Goodwill so remember yeah as you were telling the story in the beginning of the program today about how that relationship came about and how you were introduced to mr kinsley you talked about the fact. That you and your fiancee. We're looking for that apartment or a house to live in. Its you think about those types of things sean. And where you are today. Life is funny. Isn't it the way it takes you on these these little journeys everything happens for a reason. I guess yeah well. Actually i i'd written for Mister came Not that much. I have no idea who this guy was, and I was more surprised at how quickly the higher happened. I was like, Whoa, you guys have done your homework like there's no shit first. There's no chance these teams are doing their homework like you don't like Nick Syriani or whatever his first name is. If you're doing your homework, right, like the Jags, there was a rumor about urban Meyer. Then he was out that it was like, maybe this is the guy I like. Get it. They went for the home run. They went for the big name. Who knows if it works, But at least the process appeared from the outside like it took a little bit of time. The other thing with this is they fired Doug Peterson, and he hasn't been brought up in like any conversation at all is about to be Bobby Evans of the NFL like he's about. It's just go like three years with no job. And that's and that's what's absurd is this is a guy who I do like a Zafar is like the new wave of the way Football games are coached in game with rolling the dice and going forward on fourth down. I think he was at the after. I don't want to say like the cutting edge of that, But he was definitely a guy who was at the forefront. Like I'm gonna take these risks like we're seeing it now with Mike Vrabel doesn't a lot. I get it, but is Carson went still in eagle after all of this? Where's Matt Ryan? Matt Stafford playing next year like Who's going to Who? What is going to be the biggest quarterback? Move this off season? What is going to shake up the NFL in a way that we don't see coming? That's my big question. I think I think the number 11 has to be to Shawn Watson because he's the biggest name out there. But you're right in that. Like the match, Stafford moved the magnitude of that, and the other thing is in. This is your point, I think is that The dish on Watson Thing could be a domino effect. Like if he ends up going to the New Orleans Saints or something, or he ends up with the what if he ends up in Atlanta? Then this Atlanta move that draft pick Do they go acquire something else and look to fill a void elsewhere on that roster to this, then they they move Matt Ryan and does Matt Ryan or Matt Stafford, ending up with a team like the 40 Niners changed the landscape of the NFL doesn't make them all that much better Do the Patriots come up, had a huge name. That's that's a scary wanted to may. That's a scary one of me. Because the path people forget this all the time. They had more opt outs on defense than any other team had in the NFL this year due to cope in 19. So if they get the Shawn Watson and they get a first round receiver, all of a sudden, they're dangerous, But I think that actually the Dolphins are the best situation if they're able to keep the number three pick draft Devante Smith Pair him with Watson and then just say, Okay, we've got our offense with Watson, Parker Smith. And let's go because the defense under Brian Flores is going to be decent enough to keep them in postseason contention, even with the bills in that division Only the Devante Smith stuff for the last week seeing him and I saw the first time this week Todd McShay milk might have been Mel Kiper had a number two on his draft board was thinking, Boy. You have to know that it's a better move right like if they can get matched effort. I think that Stafford is an automatic. Yes, he's better than Jimmy Garoppolo. You have to take him based purely on the fact that he's gonna be on the field right. Like I think he's a better QB, but he's been more healthy just over the course of his career in general. The other elements of this is if you don't get him, do you end up with a situation where it's like? Okay, maybe we move on from Jimmy G, but you end up with a Sam Donald and a Josh Rosen and like a Ah, third middle of the road, veteran quarterback fighting for a job. I don't think that does you any good? No, no, it like you said, demonstrably better than Jimmy Garoppolo. And that's not just on the field. That is his availability as well. You have to have someone with a track record of being healthy enough. Sustain a 16 game or 17 game NFL schedule in 2021, all right. "I think the game is slow down for for Josh, and he's always trying to find two in his game. But the experience of being an NFL quarterback seeing NFL defense's It takes time. Just like when you told your plant the college level from the high school level. It takes time. And so this is not surprised me or anyone else. Our team. I don't believe in just a lot of credit goes to Josh working. He's put it John McDermott, head coach of the Buffalo Bills, talking about Josh Allen, his third year quarterback who had one heck of a season. This year. We continue along here on NFL preview is we turn our attention to the NFC Championship Game Game two of our championship doubleheader on many of these same stations, the Buffalo Bills. The Kansas City Chiefs Round two for this year, Arrowhead Stadium, the venue for this one and Talking to Sean McDermott. He made it sound like, well, you know, the game kind of slowed down from Tony. In all honesty. When you watch what was going on with Josh on this year, it was more than that. There's no doubt about the fact that his accuracy took a major leap forward. And if you watched he was always a confident guy. But now it's not. I'm confident that I can force something that happened here. I'm confident I can make something happen here. I think it's a combination of a couple things. I think what Sean said, is exactly right. I mean, the game's slowed down, he's more comfortable in the pocket. His feet are is jumpy. And when your feet aren't when your feet are settling, you're confident Now the senior mechanics become a little bit better, and you can execute a higher level. But don't discount what he did in the off season to the dedication that he had to work on his craft. And if I'm a Buffalo Bill fan One of the greatest things is is the fact that I have a young quarterback who's really talented and it's really important to him to be good, and he proved that with the work he's done on his own, and I think it's paid off. And so the combination of those two things you have a guy who's a pro hard worker understand that he has weakness is that he has to improve upon and he needs to do it on his own in the off season. And then you have also, that same young man is starting to understand the offense. How to operate What defense is there trying to do? And he's seeing it and the game is slow down. You put those two things together. With the immense talent that Josh Allen has. I mean, the dude's like 65 can run. He's big, strong, and he has a cannon for right arm. It's a pretty good formula. If you're a Buffalo Bills fan. Now, the first time they played, I actually did that game for Westwood one and he looked in a lot of ways at a sink. He looked like he was firing hot. He was he was throwing high at the beginning of the ball game. He never got into that rhythm that he enjoyed in so many games this year. How did Kansas City take him out of that? And it? Is it a repeatable? Plan. You know, I wonder if they took him out of anything Scott or was sometimes I wonder. Did he try too hard? You know they're having success early. He's having success. Well, now you're playing Kansas City, Patrick Holmes. Who is kind of a young benchmark of quarterbacks was in a situation where now he's pressing and he's trying to make things happen. Knowing that He's playing to get the guy that inside the field in an offense is gonna score a lot of points, so there's a little bit too much urgency. Too much pressure, put on himself instead of just relaxing and letting the game come to him because I don't think there was any one thing that Kansas City said Hey, we got this great formula We can get Josh Alan, you know, office game and out of sync, so I think it's gonna be really important in this game. This is, you know, he's the only a third year player. This is his first opportunity to play in a championship game first opportunity to get to the Super Bowl, and he is playing another great young quarterback. This is a time where Josh out just as take a deep breath and say, Hey, Forget about this stage. Forget about what is on the line. I just got it If we go play our game offensively, which is high powered explosive. Get the ball to Stefan Diggs taking shots down the field, mixing in the little bit of run when they need to, because they do have a good offensive line. I think you'll be fine if he starts pressing and saying, I got to keep up with the guy on the other sideline. I think that's where he'll get in trouble. Can you take Stefan digs out of the game? If you're a defense? I haven't seen it done yet this year, So I'm gonna say no, but you could always double them. But then they have other weapons to take advantage of that situation. What do you take away from that game from both Buffalo and Indianapolis, moving forward here? Well, Buffalo needed this test. You know, this is a team that had been blowing people out, you know, so they needed to show how how, you know, delicate, the playoffs can be Where if you don't control the game, the way you should your defenses and show up in a bigger manner, Then you can get knocked out in a hurry. So I think they felt that it was a chin check for them a little bit. They know their defense has to get better and their running game. Has to improve for them to really make a push here, and I thought the Colts would be the toughest out out of all the underdog wild card teams in the NFC. I just thought more balance it. Philip Rivers can do just enough. You know, they have enough playmakers enough weapons on the defense to get it done, And they almost did. Reaction. Let's go in here from some of the principles including Sean McDermott, his feelings after the game. That is good, just extremely, extremely blessed. And on the flip side, there's Frank Reich and the Colts now, right, of course, returning to Buffalo, the place where he orchestrated the greatest comeback in NFL history some 27 years ago with the 35 3 come back over. "Talk About That quarterback position because I think you know alot of patriot sales again, and I keep saying this but they don't like it when we point out at the bills rebuilding strategy is working in that the Patriots could learn something from Buffalo. So what are we going to learn from Buffalo? You know, they haven't won anything in twenty years, right? It's like no no, no. No, this is a great case study by Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott M how to put a Young quarterback in the perfect situation to succeed. Especially Young quarterback and Josh Allen who let's face. It was a high ceiling, you know, low floor type of prospect at very high bus potential if it didn't go to the right direction in Buffalo. So I looked at back at that 2018 draft. They actually traded up twice for Josh Allen's pick at seventh overall from Twenty-One wage. Because they made that playoffs or Tyrod Taylor, right? Was that the year? Yeah, so they made the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor Sweet in as a wild-card team. Then they were picking 21st. They traded up from 21 to 12 and then 12 to sneak in to get their guide Josh Allen, but I actually think more so and we can talk a little bit about Allen's development to more so than Allen's individual development. Would McDermott and being did to you know, make sure the offensive line to add Cole Beasley and Stephon Diggs and put Josh Allen in this perfect kind of offense for his skill-set with Brian table. That's really I think as much about what we've seen from Josh Allen's growth is anything in that sort of speaks to the team building process of the whole thing.

Browns Dismiss GM John Dorsey Days After Firing Head Coach Freddie Kitchens
"Let's get to it Sadly adly mark we gotta start with the browns. How did we get back here? We're back we're back to the bounds being the browns. They have fired yet. Another general manager her Cleveland parted ways with John Dorsey. After two years on the helm the team announced made that move official after it was reported in multiple places. The decision to move on from Dorsey comes just two days after the Brian Brown's fired head coach Freddie Kitchens at the conclusion of the regular season Dorsey had a meeting with. Jimmy has them the team owner earlier. Tuesday the two sides according to Tom Palacio We're talking about possible. Structural changes that would curb Dorsey authorities GM but when the two sides can come to an agreement it was over mark Feels like Cleveland. Even though the better roster is back to square one in terms of dysfunction and just in general question marks about the present and the future and I can't and even begin to understand how you must feel the frustration of well. I'm of two minds because the first is they're just more proof that the browns the constant mode is sort of developing farce. I mean whatever whenever you think that they've turned a corner. They're actually just going in a circle back to where they were before for. And there are a lot of disturbing reports and whispers coming out of Cleveland that the ownership and we know this is not not shocking. Can you think about it. But the but they continue to be very impatient with all their decisions and the people they hire and so the question now and I think that the I've never seen the fan base this deflated because of where they were a year ago at this time. Or let's say seven months ago to now but because it just doesn't seem to matter to most people who they hire and it's too it's too de energizing using to get excited about fill in the blank coach and the from the other side though I will say this had they kept John Dorsey. It would've narrowed the candidate list of who was gonNA come and work with that next team by a lot so I think if you're going to keep doing this but do you agree with that. Dorsey wasn't the guy to be leading the charge. Because everyone seems it to be an agreement that he was a guy that came in the obviously inherited. Sasha's bountiful gifts and had some hits has mrs but had some big hits to me it all feels a little premature to take him out of the equation but this organization has done. There wasn't a straight firing right. They just say couldn't get different visions on how they saw the football operation going full hundred percent. I think they wanted to keep them and they talked about how much they liked him. But John Dorsey is probably very prideful and not going to take what is it what is when you're changing title it also demotion what else is it and the thing is he he. It's hit. It was his decision number one to go with Freddie Kitchens and they they ignored Paul does recommendations of Kevin Stefanski DEEPA. Desta also wanted. Sean McDermott in the past. So I think what they were saying. Was We kind of trust. Paul Podesta's voice in in this at this time around and that's not something that again. It's kitchens fall. It's a soup of Dursey for hiring kitchens more recently. Stunning fall though we were at the owners meetings and at that point John Dorsey was the toast of the NFL. I read them in the top five of my GM rankings. no-one no-one said Oh that's that's too high. I mean like it was very recent who is five. Oh who's right behind him. Thomas demetre was five. Kevin Colbert over three but It is amazing how much talent he acquired in a short time and he's gone but I think they've gotten it wrong so many times of not having the GM and the coach align that act. I do like I like I think that needs to be on the same page. Yes at every time. So I'm fine with it. It's deflating to the point of heartbreak for for Browns fans that last year at this time this job was seen as one of the most coveted in the league with a young talented nucleus. And you're finally going to bring the winter to Cleveland and now it's senior reading reading stories that executives say that's the one place I would not go and you're right back to where you were if some of these coaching tree scenarios were cal Shanahan and has a number of people interviewing with the browns. He was there he's he. He demanded his way out of the building. You got you know the bill. BELICHICK's of the world are going to be telling these guys be careful because yes. It's great for you to go on and get a head coaching job. But the DNA here is that you won't be there. Four hundred as has made it clear in his press conference Thursday that the coach would be part of hiring the GM which sounds weird. But I know that's fine but it means that the coaches ultimately the GM's boss Asif you get hyper and that's fine as long as it's defined ahead of time if that helps them get mcdaniels fancier whoever it is that they want in the door. That's in charge and function and dysfunction always starts at the top and sports and since the has them's joined there on their fifth took over team. They're on their fifth coaching search and seven years and John Dorsey is the fifth different person or group heading up the football operation in that same seven seven year that has to be unprecedented. Let's make a change and try it another either way. I do think there are situations where you see more and more around the league where it goes in the other direction where. The coach kind of picks up in San Francisco. John Lynch came because Kyle Shanahan wanted wanted him in Buffalo Brandon. Beane came because Sean McDermott wanted him so I like that. Formula Teens are using now or they get the coach. I coach brings in mm somebody. He knows he can believe in. They understand the salary cap in the same way and can do all that administrative stuff together. I think that's that's a formula that looks like it's working in a few spots.

But the bills are not in fact named after him. So tonight the buffalo bills beat the Pittsburgh steelers seventy ten clinching a spot in the postseason and bill. What's amazing about this team? Aside from being named after you Is that for most of the two thousands. They didn't even have a winning record but but now they have made the playoffs in two of the last three years during this rebuilding process. Where does this recent success begin in your mind? I think the simplest place for it to start is just hiring Sean McDermott. This is a coach. Who really seems at odds with with a lot of what? NFL Teens tend to do when they have head coaching opportunity. Pop Up Sean. mcdumber forty two wasn't like he was old but let's face face it every coaching opportunity. That's popped up over. The last three years has basically been. Let's try and get a offensive minded coach or someone who is particularly close to. Sean McVeigh and correct defensive minded coach the panthers weren't even coming off a good season they were six and ten and ranked twenty six points allowed the year before so the bills really took a shot on shark dermott top of that. The bills gave McDermott some level of personnel control. which teams are really it? Really Loath to do it. First Year head coaches but it worked. The bills had an excellent free agent period in two thousand seventeen and they earned their draft totally differently that year their previous previous GM Doug Whaley had repeatedly traded up in years past regrettable move. Sammy Watkins. Being the most notable one but damage first move was to trade down and and the first player he drafted was Davis White. WHO had a big game against the steelers? Last night tonight again squirts out of bounds around the twenty yard long. So why headed early picked in fact. We'll before McDermott joined the team in two thousand sixteen they had the twenty seventh best defense in the NFL according to football outsiders after that they started taking up up in now bill. It's one of the best units in the League. How did this defense gets so good so quickly? I mean just to keep it simple. They got rid of everybody pretty much. I mean. The fifty three players were on their roster for the final game in two thousand sixteen before Mcdermott arrived. There's three guys left in the Renzo Alexander Jerry News and Shack Lawson all front seven pieces. I mean everyone else. Fifty other players on this roster Aurora ellsworth point and the bills have drafted well. But I think what makes this team so interesting as they really go out of their way to get veterans from other rosters and saw seemed to get more out of those players in their previous teams games in their first free agent period Jordan play Mike Hide Jordan Philips for example comes to mind in recent years where he was a second round. Pick washout of Miami. The bills brought him in. He has nine and a half sacks this season as defensive tackle. That's really impressive. There's just a lot of players on this roster who either were good somewhere and have become great in buffalo or who really weren't playing very well at all or almost out of the League who have become regulars on this really talented bills defense so last year the bills. Roll the dyson Josh Allen in the draft trading up to take him seventh overall despite his lack of college production in his rookie season was pretty underwhelming warming. Bill Fifty two point eight percent. Completion percentage just five point four adjusted guards per attempt. It seemed to me that they approached this off season with a really concerted strategy to build around him in free agency. Signings worked out for the team. It's been really good. I mean it's really the same philosophy sophy we saw on the defensive side of the ball. Those have had fifteen players. I not on offense for at least twenty percents of the snaps. Twelve of those guys are new into the roster. It's both running backs. All three of their tight ends five of their six top offensive. Lineman you know in a League where so many times you hear here that a team should sign a player or they actually do sign a player because they know the system quote unquote the bills. Sort of realized. Hey we have coaches who we pay to teach each player's the system. We should just go get those guys instead and so many of those players are playing in a high level and I think. It's really been perfect for Josh Allen Alan who even going back to Wyoming. He had to play hero ball. He had to sort of make big plays for his team to win. And we've seen a totally different quarterback this shear. I wouldn't argue. Allen is finished product but he's been productive quarterback this year a using his legs to create opportunities. He's hitting a lot of intermediate passes when he didn't do that last year. And he's avoiding turnovers man after throwing four interceptions in that really frustrating loss the Patriots week for this offense. Turn the ball over four. We're times in nine games. That's incredible for an offense that really just turn the ball over at will last season and they turn the ball over twice against the steelers last last night but they still did enough on offense to victory the snap just gonNa keep it off. He will sail. into the end zone touchdown touchdown buffalo. Josh Allen from one yard out and the bills are on the scoreboard early in the second quarter. Do you think there are any lessons. That other teams can take from the bills rebuilding process. Yeah I I do think so and I'm GonNa make a comparison that I'm sure. Bills fans are not really gonNA love but there's a lot of patriots in what the bills have done in their philosophy. The bills have been great at Pro Scouting and they've really found a way to bringing those players like I said who were struggling elsewhere. who were just guys elsewhere and turn them into much better contributors with Buffalo? They've done great work with undrafted. Free Agency have a couple starters in their secondary from there as well. They built their scheme scheme to really accommodate their players. And that's not just the Patriots thing but also way ravens thing where we're seeing that with Lamar Jackson and all the great stuff they've done on offense The bills don't have a scheme that throws the ball up fifteen times a game downfield. Just because Josh Allen has a strong arm they create better throws for him that that play to his arm strength as opposed to just trying to hit a big play because Josh Allen has in his arsenal I think in the big picture. There's just this idea that you shouldn't blindly follow what the NFL does with their trans so the bills are in the playoffs. Most likely as a wildcard team and bill while the defense is he's one of the best in the league offense has been up and down they really didn't produce very much against Pittsburgh. Do you think that that's a formula that can and work in January. I do not. I think they're a team. Nobody's GONNA WANNA play this postseason. It's very different from twenty seventeen eighteen where I don't think it's fair to say. The bills sort of meant the playoffs by accident that year. When they benched tyrod Taylor Nathan Peterman in mid season and kind of just rent a hot streak into the playoffs over the final month of the year? This team is way better on defense. They have more faith than Allen and I think the playoffs actually line up pretty well for for them as a five seat which is most likely where they're gonNA fall. They're terrible matchup for the Texans who they really really gave a tough game. Two in two thousand eighteen only for Nathan Peterman the throw too late interceptions to hand the texts victory and then they gave them our tax and Fitz. When they played last Sunday? I don't think this is going to be the last time the bills are going to be in the playoffs with this court. They're really opposition to be the best team in the AFC east. If the Patriots slip any further. And I am. I don't think I think it's too far to say that I'd be the best team in the AFC east right now
