"Three games each on Saturday and Sunday, the playoffs and then the national championship last night, it's just the Warriors in the Pacers Tonight, I will watch, but it's It's a little bit of a letdown. Let's be honest, the Pacers on a Tuesday night That's my former team. I proceed in the NBA at age 21 way back. One is the voice of the Indiana Pacers did in Mali will be watching because he went the other route. That was my old roomie. Seen McDonough Sean McDonough on the call on ESPN radio, and what he was talking about was the Devante Smith touchdown. And he picked up on its his own coverage. His stead will one of the great sports writers in history and actually made the first Jump from being a sports writer tol going on TV? I remember him lecturing Sean tonight, Syracuse years ago. Why do you want to go on TV? Being a writer is much better. Oh, yes, sir. I'll make more in one year they're gonna make in your entire life. And then a few years later, What did Ugo he sided with Bob Costas? Well, let's go down with Bill Parcells. Well, them S so he sold out, but he's a great guy anyway. So that play that was the play. If you don't people wondering, why would you have tough Borland, the linebacker pick up Devante Smith and that that's the play. If you remember when I would drive me crazy when And Robert Salas getting interviewed, you know, And you know, the 40 40 Niners gonna have to pounce if he does get a job, and we'll see rich the meeting another guy and one of my Syracuse buddies. I've been covering the church forever for ESPN, radio and other outlets will find out solid gonna fly tow. Florin Park. I think today an interview tomorrow anyway. It's a cover three, and the Raiders just hired Gus Bradley. In the one flaw that drives me nuts in that defense, and we saw it. Lot, you know, before Fred Warner could got here it can cover that. That kind of route where it was really A just drove me nuts all the time is Reuben Foster, who could not run Could not cover, but that's just the structure of that defense. It's a flaw in the cover three. And if you get caught in the wrong call, and you call the three and they have a three by, you know, side three receivers, the one side one of the other. They number from the outside in so the most inside wide receivers Number three. That's Devante Smith. He runs a deep over out the responsibility that is the weak side linebacker and it's tough Borland and for Borland, that's beyond tough. You can't run. Which Avante Smith. So when you see things like that John and Smith has got the one thing he's got on Jerry Judy is much better hands. Carrie Jody just dropped the ball too much. And I remember last year in a couple of close Krauts against L s U. He dropped the ball and I don't think he had bad hands. I don't know what his problem was in the NFL. He was intimidated about being hit, and they'll hit two Vontae Smith in the NFL. He's way smaller. Then Jerry, Judy and Jerry Judy is really light and not strong enough at all. But when you have Devante Smith is running through the pasture. I mean, just to running for the prairie with a linebacker and trail position. That's an easy one. So when you evaluate all they're talking about Devante Smith shot maybe going Uh, to Miami and number three and put him with two. Uh I mean, that seems really high. I know. The guy won the Heisman. He went off last night when he played half a national championship game. It was Best player on the field. But after seeing Jerry Judy really struggled this year, I would be a little circumspect about that one. Well, you know what it reminds me. Not exactly. But remember, and Desmond Howard was taken and how much he dominated Michigan but he was small, and I think the Redskins took him sixth overall in like 91, or doing something like that, so You have really high and back then I didn't really think about it. But just, you know, like you said, the physicality. Remember, you would know this better night would But when a Mari Cooper came in, wasn't Pacman Jones that first game with the Raiders? And it's just they test you. Yeah, they just test you and Cooper's obviously bigger than him, and he's adjusted. He's fine now, but I just if you don't take a guy with some physicality in this league, you're gonna be in trouble because that's what he's looking for Those big corn, especially in this division, right? I mean, if the other man the whole rushing around Jerry Judy, it wasn't his last game of the year was his second to last game of the year. He got. He didn't want to play. He wanted to run home to Mama. He's got to get strong. He's got to get on the jugs gone. Go in the weight room and don't come out. You run the prettiest routes I've ever seen Your Paul War field. All right, fine. You got to be tougher. And I mean Devante Smith is just so light. You worry about injury. You are good, sir. You are very good. Desmond. Howard went four overall. OK? Four. Okay. Four to the Washington football. Yeah, I remember it and he looked. He had a great career in Michigan. His last year into the Heisman pose all those things I remember returning later. Don't think VP. Yeah. I mean, he had a self improvement Turner. Mainly, mainly, That's right. But he struggled early in his career, because, like you said, he just wasn't big enough strong enough physical enough. Handle. The NFL is dominant as he was in college, and we see it all the time. I like this kid. He's good, But as you said, the design of the offense all the talent around him defensively. Usually, Ohio State has better corners and that Shawn, wait is a guy that people have talked about the first couple rounds. He's not good. Press some once you got to get your hands on Devante Smith. You gonna clean? The problem is, you know that's why these Alabama receivers is running through the prairie because you're so afraid of their speed that if you don't jam them, then they get behind you and Yvonne Dave runs round. She's a great round runner. Great hands. That sideline catch he made was incredible. But at the next level, they're gonna Pacman Jones. Um, you know, it wasn't just remember. Pac man dribbled Amari's head. Remember one point that should've been. He should have been ejected. Today. They'd kick him out of the gun. But it wasn't just that every play. Just he just jumped in his grill and just choked him. The whole game, and I'm a chicken Mari. And even now, there's a Calvin Ridley Scott that label in Atlanta. Julio is different because he's so big. I hate to put labels on athletes because they went to a certain school. You know, like Alabama linebackers. We could go on and on about those guys and just, you know, overall, the position group. But I know one thing about Alabama wide receivers is they do like physicality, with exception of Henry rugs. Did Henry rugs have a great year this year? No, no, he didn't. It's a big place here and there, but not over all the great body of work. But like you said, I mean, there's been a lot coming to the league, and Julio was big and physical, so he's different. But you're right. I mean, it kind of It's not always fair to do that. Okay? These guys went to the school. Here's what they do. But it Z kind of what happens. In fact, Cal quarterbacks we're gonna hit that way until Aaron Rodgers came in, right? Totally. Yeah, So anyway, all right, Logan Murdock's gonna join us coming up. Next two used to be with you guys over at NBC Sports. Very He's now with the ringer, and we got a lot to talk about in terms of The in terms of the the MBA and what's going on in the league now when we talk warriors, But Aziz the league meets again today. What's gonna be going on with the league will talk to Logan about it next, by the way, the pop and lend show sponsored by you, a local 3 93, representing thousands of construction workers and the plumbing My bidding and H B A..

"A dialogue back and forth during the game. So I was like, are you crazy? You know we're GONNA we're gonNA tell the Guy Hey mark. Thanks but. "South Bend. It was going to be the next day they closed Notre Dame down for two days. It was the high temperature is going to be thirteen below zero with ultra wind chill. Yeah. To Call This Day in the history of south. Bend. Dating back to the eighteen hundreds with as long as they had the records you know as far back as they went, it was the coldest day. Yikes. Yeah. So Awesome well, we sure do appreciate you stop in here at the studio and appreciate you and your fine work and Austin good to be with you -solutely, the idea I'll have to you know start becoming a listener to the. Implants and warms. WHAT'S WORMS? What's the significance of worms? His name's John Landers was in our dental school class. He finished number one we call him the bookworm. He really wasn't because he finished number one and he really partied as much as anyone else. One of the guys you you could come across but. He's funny So when I decided know was like put this podcast together, we'll just have some fun. He's a dentist to you know. So we had him on and then He's got a little younger children than I do. So they had all these activities and we could never get him on but we kept the worms in the name and. If you hear about the PODCAST, you know there's a lot of dental podcasts and things out there. But like when you hear of worms like search that one on Itunes I. It's kind of a different. That's a little bit different. So we've been We've been doing this for a couple years almost two hundred episodes in a nice studio hair and the whole thing is big time. You know better than some radio stations I worked at Oreo. Started out the facilities you have here you know one of. The things a lot that are half ass. So when I decided, I was going to do this a lot of people that have little hand records or whatever, and I was like. I like this is a full-fledged. Radio talk show like I wanted to I wanted it to be good quality like you wanted to. You want sound good down good. Nobody's got to listen to you know. Try to be funny or something once in a while and we usually. We usually drink A. I'M A. Call. On. Job Right now? Yes, you are. Feel bad for the patients who might be waiting while we're babbling about college football, but it sure was fun now. Well, thank you. Thanks for coming on the show You got. You just got back from a basketball game. Yeah. This time of year I do ACC basketball game every Monday night ESPN caused big Monday it's a ACC than big twelve doubleheader. So this coming Monday, we have Notre Dame at Florida state and then on March fourth, we have Virginia at Syracuse which I'm looking forward to try to go back to my beloved Alma Mater. I have to ask you for we get off your your partner probably my favorite college basketball game that I've ever witnessed in. That's at six overtime Oh. Wow basketball. To remember that, absolutely, not I, remember it till till. The Dad. Is probably up till. I think past midnight. Yeah. Was One, thirty, two, I believe it was one twenty, six something like that. Yeah. Morning that it ended. That was unbelievable Austin. You know it's It would have been unbelievable. It was any two teams but to have it be. Syracuse in Connecticut, which already great rivalry you know to the two coaches variety in the hall of fame behind Calhoun and to me the most amazing thing about it was in the first five overtimes, which are five minutes each. So for twenty, five minutes of game action Syracuse was never ahead ever right lane Ivan by one point for one possession. You know they were the behind or tied behind tied. There was always that pressure on the whole time just to get to the next overtime and then finally in the sixth over time. Hello people taking pictures. A lot of good smiley teeth in here to. Your podcast pictures but it was the most amazing thing I remember Bill Rafter. Funny quote you know bill likes to have a good time as we all do and He said, it was the first time ever got home from New York at three in the morning and my wife wasn't mad at me. But that was a great game. So you know I, get asked about what are the best games he ever did most memorable games and that won't be right there at or near the top of the list what's number two then? All boy ninety two just got a lot of attention in this. Documentary the thirty for thirty ESPN just about Dion Sanders but the Nine hundred ninety to the Atlanta braves game seven against the Pittsburgh Pirates Francisco Cabrera got the hit and said bream scored the run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and then the next year when we did the world series Joe Carter. Hit the home run to win the world series the Toronto Blue Jays. It was only the second time that the world series at ever ended on a home run that was pretty cool lots of Great College Football Games. And that was the only that was the first time that the trophy went north of the border. That's right. That was my that was my call. That's nineteen ninety-two. With the Blue Jays Toronto wanted both years did the World Series Ninety to ninety eight? They want it back to back which was fun for me because I started out in Minor League Baseball Broadcasting in Syracuse New York doing the triple a baseball team for the Toronto Blue Jays their AAA affiliate was based in circles sign knew a lot of those guys who had been in Syracuse with me when I was starting out and they were on the way up to the majors if some of those guys on the team so that made it a little extra fun too but. Chance to a lot of fun stuff and hopefully a lot more before we're finished. Yeah. For sure So I did I did manage to wrangle a ticket for the. Game, four of the cubs when they won and that was though that was the last game they lost. Like they were pretty much when they be Cleveland. Yes. So Jon Gruden, I take credit for that happening for them winning because we did a Monday night football game the week before we were in Denver and we signed off and you're saying you know we'll see you next Monday night from Chicago. It's the bears and I up with the plane maybe the Minnesota Vikings. So we have a mutual friend Mark Ganesh who lives in Chicago is very well. Connected Sports Guy Sports. Consultant. and John Each had a text and we got on the money football bus. Hey, you're saying you're coming to Chicago I have a front row tickets for the Sunday night game was game five. Yeah. Would love to have you I think it's a hoax right? Who who's GonNa Invite you to the world series and that front row seats right. So we called them and said you better not be joking about this because if you're serious, we're going. And I remember Uh Earlier that day Bruin saying you know we should probably just go for three or four innings. You know we got work to do and you know the game. Said this guy could probably scalp these tickets for twenty five thousand right peace right? I mean are literally there we were in the front row just past the cubs dugout. Right was the dugout until the left was in the Gruden cab yelling at the third base coach Gary, Jones come on Jones a you know giving it was almost like a dialogue back and forth during the game. So I was like, are you crazy? You know we're GONNA we're gonNA tell the Guy Hey mark. Thanks but. We gotta go in the fourth inning the so we stayed for the whole game. You know once we got there, John realized he was having such a good time. Anyway we were not leaving Brian Ross. One that night and you know kind of. "Sean McDonough Todd Blackledge will have the call Holly. Rowe Tom Rinaldi will be on the sidelines and Todd Blackledge joining us now from AT and T stadium. Todd, let's start with Dexter Lawrence being suspended for Clemson for performance enhancing drugs. What are the ramifications on the Clemson defense? I think it's a big loss for Clemson. I think it's a sigh of relief for Notre Dame and their offensive line because you know, Dexter Lawrence as good as that front four is. And they're all NFL caliber guys. He was the main force in the middle. So that muddies up the running game. And you know, Clemson has great numbers in defending the run this year in a lot of that is due to the fact that Dexter Lawrence is such a massive human being in the eats up Spacey eats up double teams, he frees up linebackers. He frees up Christian Wilkins to use his athleticism and so Albert Huggins. They think he's an NFL caliber guy, but he's about fifty pounds lighter than Dexter Lawrence. So I think it's a big loss for the Clemson. Tiger defense is it as easy as next man up. I know they'll try to treat it like an injury. But in a big game like this the biggest game of the season. Is it that simple? Well, I think they'll treat it that way. And I think that's the only way you can handle it if you're Clemson. But again, I think it's a bonus for Notre Dame. Because now you can concentrate some of your past protections on Christian Wilkins, not to give any disrespect to Albert Huggins. But again with the absence of that big body, and he is the biggest of those defensive linemen. It just makes things a little bit more manageable. I think in the run game and the past game in terms of their schemes for Notre Dame. Tatas we look at Notre Dame their schedule this year. Impressive win to start the season over Michigan but close to win against ball state tight win against bandies. Same with pit in the USC game to finish off the regular season, unbeaten six games won by ten or less wide. They've been so good and close games. I think they've got great leadership. You know, you look at their defense in particular. They've got two players at each level of their defense the line linebackers secondary that have over twenty five. Starts. It's a very veteran experienced group. They know how they kind of let some things get away at the end of the season last year. And and so I think that they just all year they've had a really nice maturity about him. Good leadership. I think Ian book moving into the quarterback position. You know, just inspired the whole team not just the offense. And and they've I think all of those things together help them to to play. Well in the close ballgames Todd Blackledge with us from Arlington, Texas. We're getting set for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl classic. And speaking of Ian book. What does this Notre Dame all fence book and this offense need to do to be successful today against that star studded Clemson defense, they have to keep this defense on us. You know, so they've got to try to find ways in some creative ways to run the football because Dexter Williams. They're great running back has to be a factor in this game for them to have a chance to win. So it's not gonna just line up and slam the football at Clemson. But they've got to find some ways to run. The football submits direction runs some screens or quick throws to the running backs and the book the biggest thing he has to do is get the ball out of his hands. He can't hold onto it for a long time. And he's been good at that ever since he assumed the role is the starter. They've got weapons on the outside. I think if there is a soft or a vulnerable spot to the Clemson defense it is in their secondary. And particularly at their safety position, if you can get some matchups against their safety's, but you just can't hold the football very long against these guys in the best thing they can do in whatever they call runner pass is to avoid as many third down and long situations as they can against this Clemson pass rush. Todd. We know clemson's been on this stage many times when the title a couple of years ago. What was your sense just in meetings? Maybe coaches players from Notre Dame about being on this big stage for the first time in a while. I didn't feel too big for him. I think that again, I think that speaks to the maturity of the team you talk to guys like drew tranquil. You know, this is a very savvy veteran team they've had good resolve they've been able to block out distractions. I think Brian Kelly's done a really nice job getting his team prepared. So yes, even though Clemson has been there and done that it's still as a matter of playing football for sixty minutes. Once they kick it off its handling all the distractions leading up to it can be a challenge. But I think it seems like Notre Dame's done a good job of managing all of that. All right, Todd Blackledge. You will I hear him see him on television. Sean McDonough will have the play by play Clemson and Notre Dame on ESPN television will have the Goodyear Cotton Bowl classic between Clemson and Notre Dame here on ESPN radio with Bill rosinsky, David Norrie, any and Fitzsimmons. I marquess your college football live a number guys playing on this final Saturday of two thousand eighteen will be playing on Sundays in two thousand nineteen and for more on the pro prospects in our first matchup between Clemson and Notre Dame. "The the different running back so derek henry had a huge game in the titans win over the chiefs in the wild card round and he was one of the toughest running back to bring down all season averaged a third most yards after contact per rush during the regular season who was second legarrette blunt not surprising who was first in that category patriots running back and dion louisville five eight one hundred ninety five pounds 7 inches shorter fifty pounds lighter than henry but equally as hard to bring down during the regular season sunday our first gave evan is jacksonville at pittsburgh how much of a chance this history tell us that jacksonville has to win in pittsburgh one of my favorite notes of the weekend that since ben roethlisberger was drafted by the steelers in two thousand four they have a losingrecord at home against two teams including the playoffs the patriots and the jaguar pretty unbelievable jacksonville's foreign one in pittsburgh in that time period that includes wins earlier this season were ben roethlisberger threw five interceptions and in the franchises only playoff meetings between the two teams i was back in two thousand seven and our final divisional playoff matchup will be sunday four forty eastern new orleans at minnesota it is not the first time that these two teams have met this season what stands out about what's different now evan sometimes it rematch as can be a little deceiving these teams met in week won the vikings 129 nineteen on monday night football but sunday's game be exactly 125 days since that game but a lot has changed sam bradford started instead of case came a quarterback in that game adrian peterson tied for the saints leading rushing and alan cooke rush for gamehigh 127 yards he was of course loss of the season because of an injury and this will also be the first playoff meeting between these teams since two thousand nine nfc championship which happened to be brett farce final postseason game this is the game i'm most looking forward at this weekend great defense great often i think everyone is and hopefully this game will be as good is that two thousand and nine nfc championship game evan thanks for taking some time thanks repairing some perspective we.

"It's a big thank you to steelers old pro defensive liming cam hayward and now onto our espn nfl stats maven evan capital with a little perspective on this weekend's divisional playoff matchups in evan thanks for joining us one of the first i want to ask you about was the experience inexperience factor with the quarterbacks in each of the match up this weekend nice surround megan ataman and it's really all four match ups experience version experience you'll get tom brady and rothlisberger drew brees matt ryan if combined for 75 playoff starts in their careers look on the other side mark is maury oda lake bortles case kinam nichols if combined for all three playoff starts between those four quarterbacks and the l one stabbed it really puts in perspective that that our great friend vince massey put out tom brady has more super bowl wins than marcus mario oda lake bortles case unom and nick folds have playoff starts that tells you what you need to know going to this weekend doesn't mean gene anything in terms of the results but they really a big disparity in terms of experience russian experience with these quarterbacks a so let's start the first given the weekend and what stands out to you about the falcons coming into philadelphia as the number six seed so the falcons could be the first six to beat a oneseat since two thousand ten when we saw it happened twice the packers beat the falcons went onto win the super bowl the jets beat the patriots and in lost to the steelers and the following but this one comes with a little bit of an asterisk because philadelphia is the first one seed as an underdog in their first playoff game mazen now all that has to do with carson went to nick falsehood mean eagles had a big homefield event thiesen and seven in one at home they've got the best home record in the league over the last two seasons so so certainly won't be an easy task for the falcons going in the saturday night we get titans patriots what stands out to you about what tennessee has to deal with knowing lasted when that game tom brady him marcus mario to will rightfully so good allow the attention but one of the mattress i'm looking for here's between.

"You know ryan is a heck of a guy um uh it was a a scary and unfortunate injury that you don't wish on anybody um let alone a teammate you know a really good friend of mine and uh you know we're just praying for you know i know he's in our corner and wearing whose corner so you know we want to win these games for him as well what are the visits the hospital been like to go see in their camp uh real ryan surprisingly upbeat um and grind uh you know uh just wants to talk football with us um i know sometimes you comes over here for you know some of the uh tv linebacker meetings but you know ryan is too strong to be regular ryan he doesn't let anything holding back he lives london injury odenberg righteousness wants to you know keep the spirit tide you know he's very positive first when you talk to them can there were forced dealers who are name first team all pro this season you being one of four i want to ask you a little bit about the other three and what comes to mind when i bring up their name antonio brown one of the best overdo it you know aib's you know uh a guy that you know loves this game and you know prepares like no other uh you know everybody thinks he's just supposed to be some route runner um but he he studies his craft and things you can do at all um and you know i know there's a lot of good oversee receivers out there but a aib's the best receiver in the league and we expect to see him out there this week correct i think so here about levy on bell what comes to mind when i bring a levy on bell at first team ultra the ultimate mismatch for every linebacker uh you know because he can you know run you over um he could be patient little in the whole and then you know blitz out of it um and make a big play um and they can be uh uh a great uh you know a catcher are the backfield you know i i think labiancas great blockers well when it comes to pass protection but uh.

"George i loka could say and his agent said you know well it was uh a moving target you know you can't it's hard to hit the receiver right where you want to because you know the receivers moving y'all george i loka launched himself headfirst into the upper body of antonio brown and anybody who watched that saw that uh i don't know anybody you know who will i shouldn't say that because i've read commentary last couple days from a few people seem to think that is what football should be i really don't think that that that's what my dad but they could be or most people you know i think the vast majority of the responses been the along the lines what i said with john bruton said what troy aikman said many people that britain around the country yeah it seems like commonsense doesn't it uh at some point you're you're going to be outraged by what you see if uh if it goes too far in and last monday went too far we had a little ghetto that amir i have a lot of friends of mine love football lobbied hard hitting physical football as i do as you said i've been around at my whole life uh but uh you know that cross the line i think and i think most people who uh look at it from a reasonable point of view which feel the same way i we'll have more with sean mcdonough here monday night football playbyplay voice and former voice of the bus and red sox for a long time as well wellknown here in new england bright after the break we'll talk about some controversy going on here with the patriots with ronkko in caskey and the monday night game between the patriots and dolphins stick around.
