I haven't heard that name in forever and he only hit like six home runs in his career but hit one everything was going right and my phone rang it was my girlfriend who was at a party and it's the seventh inning and she says honey congratulations on winning the world series and I dropped the phones and I looked up and dusty Baker was walking to the mound to take Russ Ortiz out of the game all so I didn't even watch any seven. "Victory. No, no. I mean, that was a great moment. Gio your shallow. The walk off magic and everybody knew he was gonna get the game winning it CC knew I knew everybody knew game start at that point after the Alvarado wild pitch games tie pressures off. Man. Even if this game goes extra innings, he's probably win. But you never know who knows who knows who's available out of that bullpen, but they probably wouldn't anyway that glacier Torres at bat was the real turning point of the game. What an at bat what an app pack. Oh my God. Those kinds of at-bats as a baseball geek, if you will, they get pumped up and in a weird way, I remember them more vividly than the one that gets all the attention, can I give you an example. That can I can I do that. Paul O'Neil to horrible moment in my history. Great moment for the Yankees fans that up against Mondo Benitez, does anybody remember how the start the game they tied the game against the New York Mets in the ninth inning of game one of the World Series. Anybody know, does that jump out at you as much as Paul O'Neil, working are Mondo to a walk? It doesn't I'll give you another one. This one's not as good of an example, because you do remember, Robin Ventura hitting the big grand slam single. But you know how that started right Sean Dunston baby. That's how it started. Don't stand with fouling balls off, like this was his last app out of his career was it may have been nineteen thousand nine but that at-bat set the whole tone glacier Taurus's at that when the game yesterday. In my humble opinion. It won the game yesterday. Now again, I don't know the result of this. I'm hoping it delivers but Kendra Morales in a home run in this game. He's obviously one of the newest members of the New York Yankees. Why not Brian Cashman figures? Look, I can sign. Evan Roberts to play first base hill at three ten maybe I would you never know actually my swing is so long an awful, I'd be lucky to make contact. But I play good defense over there. But my fielders would get upset at me because I'm not that tall they'd say seriously. We have a first basement is five nine. What the heck's Cup with that? But I- scoop them all out of the dirt labor you bounce one. I'll pick it out. So they pick up Kendra Morales. He hits this bomb of a home run. John, sterling do we have a dramatic Hingis Morales? Homerun call for five hundred dollars for three hundred dollars. Do we have that call swung.

"I think people for me personally, this is anecdote, obviously, but you know, my parents aren't from this country. So baseball wasn't a big sport where they were born usually baseball is introduced to you by your mom or your dad or an uncle of some sort. And then you pick it up from there. I didn't get into baseball until I was twelve years old. And that was because the White Sox were team that was on the on the ready, and they had the cool uniforms, and they had Frank Thomas and Wilson Alvarez and Alex Fernandez and black Jack McDowell and a lot of cool characters. And like, you know, everybody's a cubs fan. The city I'm gonna check out the south side team and from that point on that's when the misery started in my life until World Series that was one, but. And we'll get into Tim Anderson. A little later in the show how he is rejuvenating a lot of baseball glory for a lot of people in this city. And I think a lot of about a young African American kids around the country. I now, but I think that I've never heard someone make the point that you made about the presentation and how it's not just about homers and strikeouts. But how do you get people to appreciate those things that haven't appreciated them before? It's kind of like, you know, how did you get somebody an art gallery who doesn't really appreciate art and say by only what you like like, right? What's the buy only what you like buy in for lack of a better phrase that you can suggest to a baseball fan or suggest a major league baseball that would have more people endeared to their sport. I think this is the catch twenty two. But it also relates back to what we're talking about. What Tim Anderson, Tim Anderson? God bless him. I'm not going to get all the way into this is not a superstar in this league. But he brings attention to something that might drawn. I otherwise when I was a kid my favorite player. In the league were not do. Monster stars Ken Griffey junior was not my favorite player. I like Frank Thomas a lot the guys like that. We're not the dues. I love. I looked towards your regular dudes who just played on the field. That allowed me to come to the game. And feel like I could at least understand how the path to getting into the bigs works because let's say, I don't know Sean Dunston isn't going to think about all the time. He was not some big star. But if I turn on the TV and one of the regular dudes who does one of the things gets lauded for I don't know, let's just say advancing runner and dudes are giving him the hands going back into the dugout if you don't promote congratulatory type of way, I'd like Jeffries going away. So that I can begin to understand why people do this because I'm paying attention to more people than just the basic. So when you talk about the presentation is it does tie into that. Because you go to another country and you see regular plays celebrated wildly because people understand the game. And if you don't allow those from other cultures of baseball to bring what they have outside of it into the major league. Product you're going to get something boring. That's not going to allow people to really get to it. And let me say this quickly as well. Major league baseball. Also, the dudes are super good. So when you watch a game. You don't have any realization of how hard go to a minor league game who to a college game. And you know, what it's a little bit more fun on some level. Because dude don't make every play. You don't mess ups in errors happen all the time. And so you start to realize like, yo this is tough. And I think that's what it means. Requires people understand the game from a level lower than just a big to really enjoy. How good it is in the in the in the top flight of what the game is. He's Clinton Yates Jason golfer filling in for Spain and fits right here on ESPN radio. When we return we'll have the latest developments on the tyreek hill story, and how this could impact Kansas City's decision to move forward or not. We'll talk about that next right here on ESPN radio the ESPN app..

"Wanna be curmudgeon about it. It just seems like you're Notre Dame. You don't modify your uniform for anybody at your old school? Just you take a back seat to the Yankees. No, you're the you're Notre Dame your another iconic brand if it were old Maki stadium. If it were the historic Yankee Stadium. Then maybe we give him a pass. But the fact that it's a new whatever. So what new stadium don't care win the game. Same just when the game and just put those in a game where you can get in as the as the three seed and get absolutely embarrassed. How st- by Clemson and Alabama because you got no business being in the playoff. How you like that? I disagree. I feel they are this is going to me. They are going to get wrecked by Alabama or clouds at Alabama. It's not the same level as Clemson Allah absolutely destroyed pretty mediocre last week. Whereas with other starting quarterback. I mean, yeah, they're they're defensive back. Trouble books been great Notre Dame Stevenson grade. Actual throwing the ball they give Iran. Remember this exact conversation five years ago, or whatever it was six years. John picking him. I would not picking to beat Alabama. Or I think I think the Clemson games. The coin flip that Clemson defensive line. There seconds are better than almost anybody's. I like, that's they're just going to rotate guys through. And I was watching film with DJ on the plane the other day, they this number forty two my God this guy. I can't remember his name. I hate doing that. But the line's been good forever. They have great offensive line. Coach no, quote, we just left. They had no question. So you're crazy. Isn't it that that teams got no business Irish take care of what was the score that Notre Dame pit game. Nineteen four let let's go through like their last six weeks. And let's talk about this Notre Dame. He'll get into the final four because they really playing. Well, they can they're really playing. Maybe I don't know if they'll be room for them with the Indiana hoosiers after they go up to an Arbor and take down the allegedly mighty wolverines that also may happen. Syracuse will not be Notre Dame money or hope they do you hope they hope they do. I don't I do not wanna see I do not wanna see Notre Dame in the final four. No, I don't think the region who would you want to over them another SEC team. Yeah. I'd rather have that don't do that money come on competition sake. Yeah. I would rather see you're going to be in Abacha Michigan. Now, you'll be very Bryce how they how they look. Here's what I want. I want Oklahoma. I want Lincoln Riley. I want that offense. And I want to spread it out. And I wanna see speed versus power. That's absolutely what I want. Now UCF even if they lose one hundred twenty eight to nothing, then it's Justice being served not into the Justice. This is a different owner Dan team. I think I don't know how much you've watched. But they're they're they're fun. They're I remember I remember sitting in a bar in buffalo with our mandate. Head of security who is a diehard Notre Dame fan. Asking me to watch. The Notre Dame pit game with them. And I remember walking a team. I'm like really this. This this team that's a bag into pick. And teams will ought to have Alabama had semi hiccup last week to its they've looked great against they beat Michigan league one with there with a quarterback. The good thing is we'll see I'm calling it. They're going to win out. I think. Confident they're gonna win out there Clemson game. I want wanna get into some the pro football picks. Here we have a couple of things to get to. We just were this is what we do. Because we we actually are not just sports innards on the air. We actually liked to talk about sports when we're not on the air down. In the newsroom, we were just kids in their spaghetti. What were the two that came up the one that came up was who is the best shortstop of all who is the best show. I casually mentioned Derrick jeeter, maybe counts as the greatest shortstop of all time. Right. Is there? Anybody better Cal Ripken, Ernie banks? Sean dunston. I love Charlotte. Sean I loved him. He'd hold the ball. Hold the ball..

"In time. Gorilla. Running hard on that one. Just dead beat the play and the giants quickly go to the phone the bench coach, bam. Bam unions calling to Sean Dunston down in the video room in the clubhouse. Chad chop, and Sean Dunston you operate. The video room. And it looks like the first replay. We see it looks like he actually. If he's out he's out by an inch fractured of an inch. And the the one angle mid looked like the foot was on the bag when it hit the glove and the other angle, you couldn't really see the the full foot because it was being blocked off by the the leg of the first baseman Garcia. But they're not going to challenge it. So now first and third with one out after the infield hit by Raila great out. Great effort by Brandon Crawford, but just a little bit late to get. And here's Manuel Margot who takes a called strike Margot from the Dominican Republic. Middle infield double play depth. There's throw to first and perilla is back to the bag. Pirillo who runs pretty well. We just saw it. But he is not a base dealer has only five steals all year. Margo has exceptional speed. Here's a stretch and the pitch, and it's a called strike of the inside the inner third of the plate. Although Margot was backing off from it. That ball was.

"By the NC you. A Adam you talked about it. Earlier the brewers are. A little more vulnerable, to lefties than. Righties this team they've won three straight here they've got a swagger, they stole a big base when they didn't have to yesterday. It's time to shut them down a little bit, and if Suarez can do it that for me is the. Guy to watch no here's the pitching has got to happen today starts with the guy on the hill it's. A rookie today but, as. You. Said it's, a lefty the brewers faced fewer left handed. Pitchers than. Any, team in. Baseball, and they haven't fared well against. When they do face him so you saw how they did it against Bumgarner swore. As the kid has been sort. Of stoic out there he comes out there and he. Does his. Them guidance just baseball have? You talked to Joey Barton it off I just want to bother so I wouldn't come and camp next? Year I'll probably bothering are you, impressed by. What you've heard or seen from him lately A young BUSTER he could play and very happy to have None you know obviously you're one, of the best shortstops I've ever played here in San, Francisco? And I think some would say the? Same about Brandon Crawford do you work often with Brandon? Crawford, or do you. Kinda just let him do his thing Brandon I have, nothing? To do it or make a play? You can play where I I saw him in high? School I knew he could play and actually. Help them I said well, what better than all of us I? Mean one thing you didn't have to battle when. You're playing, shortstop, I'm guessing is the shift right How was it into the chef I. Was playing I probably would have Go. Get them, on just use my rings I mean I'm not saying these guys will have raised with. This how the game is played now so you have to go. By what the team Yeah and and talking about the chef do you know I think there's like. A big move towards these advanced metrics in baseball Looking at exit via Zillow looking at kind of. Launch. Angle what do you think about, that as kind? Of I I feel like you're an old school baseball player would hits.

That's all I'm concerned about is hits and making a place and you know. Speaking of heads I feel like it's gonna be? Hard to come by in this game sometimes you know the? Giants struggled a, little, bit, certain times in. The year what is your, mentality around straggling during. The season what. Do you tell the guys and they come to you and. They say hey man I'm just depressing You? Gotta keep going, have, to, play about Friday Basically if you love it then play Some things will happen some things we. Have to go out there. And, play you can make, no excuses I know? We talked a. Little bit off air. About mental health coaches and things like that what what's. Your opinion all that stuff Mental health coaches yourself when you get hit you. Feel? Good when you? Don't you don't Good it works for. Some people I had a mental. Health coach it'd be my. Father he knows me knows Very well Brings it back to being growing up as a little kid wasn't worrying about money wasn't worried about making now Making plays a game of baseball so they always tell us to keep the game simple some guys mental health I think you are your best Oh, yeah I totally agree with that and here father as well to. A baseball player. Your son Sean Dunston junior he plays baseball and you know it. Sounds like it's probably hard to be a baseball, player, isn't it, is hard. Man is hard on him hard I just tell. Them just, go out there accountable for everything we do because, daddy played, after, me is going, to be easy, you have to go out there it'd be accountable and just love. What you do. I love easily basil easily base Your heart rate you, have to be going to be a young man. My dad was hard, on me One day you'll have a wife and children no kids. Play, I think it's so. Beautiful he's he has a harder his dad is a hall of, Famer and so on Very well I mean. When, he came up the. Game then phase him because he's been in the clubhouse So you just. "Conversation at storytime with mom. Nicole Briscoe Todd Walker is here to Tim I wanted to ask you we haven't talked a, lot about at all about Alan? Trammell and I'm not calling you old but what do you. Remember watching or of course you probably want kindergarten or something like that what? Were, you what you remember about Alan Trammell following you're watching him play well you know this time they had a staying back in the American League with Trammell played. That any shortstop that had, great carry on his ball on his throw it was called Alan Trammell Kerry meaning did matter where he threw from you, watch and it wasn't like wasn't. Like Sean Dunston thrown over the, first but the ball always got there could never lost its line and it always its first baseman in the little of the best and that was called alan trammell carry he was so reliable as a shortstop he was so much better hitter than people gave him credit for i believe it was the best player on a championship team in nineteen eighty four and when you look at the way the game was supposed to be played on every level every day there's a picture of alan trammell right they're not like this matters but i'm told that he used to play pick up basketball while he was playing in the big leagues of the off season guardsman end line to end line in a pickup ask a ball game 'cause that's how alan trammell attack everything he did athletically especially baseball and i just love the fact that he spent twenty years in major league baseball and all twenty years where with the same team as in the detroit tigers and it's just it's just not the way the game is today So that's something special there are two, modern era selections to. Be enshrined tomorrow the other is Jack. Morrison and Morris, page arguably, the greatest game in baseball history we're talking about game seven of the nineteen Ninety-one World Series between the twins and the Braves he pitched seven are you pitched ten innings how much of that in that game defines his legacy I think that personifies who he was and is and I wrote the side bar that. Night for Sports Illustrated might sidebar was on Jack force remember time Kelly the twins manager came to take him out in the tenth inning in Jack Moore is not coming out of the gate and Randy Bush of the twins told. Me after the game Jack has really tried to take Jack out, of the game time to try to take, him out it would have, been the first. Time in history that. A manager was killed about Jack would have killed John. Kelly because he is not coming out of. That game in the tenth inning of. Scoreless tie those pictures don't exist anymore and I know the numbers don't always add up for. Jack Morris ICRAF. The hall of fame I? Get it but fourteen opening day starts there was never The question is starting game, one or game seven other, play on series It was That game seven. In ninety one kind of personified exactly who. He was he was not coming out of. That game That's so interesting well you know as you know I was on. The field with Grady little and Pedro Martinez in a similar situation and it didn't. Work out the same for, us but I played. With Trevor Hoffman in San Diego and we've talked about his. Fastball we talked about his auspey especially at. Change up what made him special to you Well his competitive nature was like few others as we know as you know tie he was a shortstop is a minor league, he wasn't a very, good hitter he could play defense. And he really throw teammate told the DP you know I don't think you're ever going to hit you should be Keller pitcher and a year later he was a pitcher and a couple of years later he's pitching in the big leagues when he. Finished with six hundred one sage that change it was, unbelievably good especially since at least early crew so hard by the fact, that he could come. Out, of that, bullpen with hell's, bells screaming in the background like that come out so amped up and throw that I for a change out as opposed to throw. It as hard as he could I think really kind of sunup who Trevor Hoffman. Is was he understood the, competition of the game. About as well as anybody and Absolutely I had a? Flair, for the dramatic and being out in. Front given his, dad was singing, are, sure at Anaheim stadium Trevor survive a kidney. Ailment when he was young kid. He proposed to his wife on one knee at halftime of a. Buffalo Bills, game he's used to being in front he's. Not afraid of anything or anybody and that and, that tremendous change is another reason he's going to the hall of fame for a small public service announcement if you're thinking of proposing don't do, it in a public, place make it private and romantic. Back to baseball it's also incredibly difficult to make the hall of fame as a relief pitcher because Hoffman's only the sixth to do it I went out on a gigantic limb earlier and said number seven is gonna make it next year when Mariana. Rare makes them out for the first time I know, huge huge swing there but how to Hoffman and Rivera compared to each other Well if you look at. The regular season numbers they're pretty close I mean you, could Rivera's better than anyone it's not really close between the number two reliever of. All time but you look at, the regular season numbers in Trevor Hoffman is fairly comparable to Mariana nobody's Mario however what. Separates Mariana is postseason covers which are just ridiculous they're absolutely absurd he's. One of the great post-season, pitchers of all time and certainly greatest, postseasons believer of all time and is greatest. Author was that's what separates Mariano is what he did in October we set you up for this question in the last. Segment and we didn't get the answer to it so, I'm gonna ask it again now of all of the inductive is going in tomorrow Vladimir Guerrero Trevor. Hoffman Chipper Jones, Jack Morris Jim, Thome e Alan Trammell who was your favorite to watch Well I think it. Was Chipper, Jones, who we talked about earlier but, I've always admired the. Way that his. Professional career started he was on his high school graduation party weekend when his father called and said you better get home the Braves wanna come talk to you so of course he. Went straight home and the pre drafted meeting with the Braves took thirty minutes Chipper did not have an. Agent he took the first offer. That the graves gave to him which granted was a. Good offer but his dad took, him upstairs, and Chipper you can get. A lot more money than this Well I know, I. Can but I want to be the number one overall pick I wanted to play now and I'm gonna make so much. Money playing this game that I don't eat to get it all right away here and to me that was the consummate Chipper Jones betting on himself only that is hard as this game is, he was going to beat this game that's how confident he, was in his ability and boy did it ever show and. After that great rookie year he had he told me Cal Ripken gave him a, baseball cowards hero of. Chippers growing up in the baseball has. Said great rookie, year now comes the hard part in Chipper kept that ball on his desk and. Looked at it all the time. Knowing the adjustments have to come now and he made all of them storytime with Tim on. The shell Pennzoil performance like we made it. That entire conversation and we never touched and Vlad.

"Know, doing the show for me last night you try to recount, everything and there's so much went on but I wanna talk about Crawford and, I said it on Twitter last night and you, know when you need a double, play if, the balls hit the him you. Just you don't have to, say anymore he just gets it done but he made a double play with Hanson That Murata that ball in the ninth inning And this is one for the, profession explained because the, winning runs on third you turning. It, second I as opposed to? Going home well what happened in that play I thought it was a tremendous play Well in that scenario you know. You have two options I mean if you don't turn up play the games over so you have the option, a lot of teams will play the infield all the way. In and you're gonna go home I a what we play is called the three depth that then between all the way in and double up you're in. A position to do both. At, the Baltic flow you can come get it your athletic about throw the guy out at home plate in a bit firm where you got a. Chance for a double, play you turned a double, play now. The only the only issue whether, it is you got to be one hundred percent sure that you. Can turn a double play was the, runner he's a fast runner but ball was hit firm Boppard new we had a clean the throat a second and a in a good turn. That we turn it so they opted, for the double play which is great because if you go home on that play now you only, have the second out, though it the risky play in. The, back if you don't turn? The double play the game is over But we felt they were in, the right position athletic all all they could come home on a lower hit ball at double play if the ball take some great play really. A great play and Miranda couldn't couldn't, be any better Miranda Again to play that sort of gets overlooked. Sandovol came in and that sacrifice bunt Miranda was kind of getting. In his way not sure what happened there but San Antonio made. A heck of a plate at to, throw out the runner on the sacrifice bunt that preceded all. That Yeah you know they don't sacrifice. The whole lot I think they. Had all these up. To that point they chose to do it so with a position player up at it. Sometimes difficult to, run, a bunch play. And try to get the elite guy but you know it is not an easy guy. To bond I gotta give bender credit earthbound he. Put it bow he made a heck of a bond in that situation off a, guy throwing ninety five as, you've said Dan the ball man he was in position the field to bond and get the run around at first base so Well you know the the walk and set up the double play so there was a big inning garage to. Keep the game, going obviously we're able to tie it after. That but was not able to. Come home at the. W. now but a lot of baseball last night and as I say you gotta survive. July and this, team, showed a lot. Of grit last night I thought and come back and there was so many parts of. It The other part with Hansen on some of the pop ups and I, realize you've always told me it's tough to teach defense in the major leagues but a couple of balls or hit the right field and what, was your take on Hanson. And mccutchen and where those balls landed tattling away from him what. Went on there, well you know it can be a difficult play for. An NCO there and the number. One thing is you know you saw a guy last night and Brandon Crawford when the ball went up. He's. Like Sean Dunston and the fact that Sean Johnston, was one of the one of the best, when that ball went. Up in the air he. Wanted, to catch it and that's one thing that we always talk. To these guys about it's like Brandon Crawford is a gold glove. On that ball goes up he's not hoping, to catch it he's expecting and wanting to catch it and, he takes off for the ball wanting..

"In two thousand three wanted to pitch swing and a high fly ball along the left field line on the run toward the line is pender right at the line has it and the ball back in fairground off his glove but the third base umpire jordan baker had signalled that it was a foul ball at the time that it hinders glove so that is an error and doug atbat stays alive looking at the television replay man he was standing in foul ground and then he arched his back toward fair territory and the ball hit off the heel of his glove but we don't again we don't have cameras it looked straight down the foul lines here but the the giants might be say hey wait a minute he he leaned back over the the foul line so the plano pat greg gibson is also the crew chiefs saying to the judge will do you want to ask for a review or not bruce butch is all right we're gonna ask for it but she's asking the bench coach bam bam ulan and munitions he was he was when he was on the phone talking to the the clubhouse the guys who look at that sort of thing sean dunston chad shop and he said well he was on the one side he was signaling then he reached back to the line so i i don't know how the uprise are going to overturn this with the angles worsening because we're we're seeing something that does not look right down the line and you'll be you're talking about overruling the umpires call looking right down the line he had a much better look at it than any of the angles we've seen on camera dave i don't know this is not taking long looks like they're ready to take the earphones off right now talking to new york maybe maybe maybe new york they think they saw enough to overrule it the i guess you could hope that somewhere somehow they had a different camera you know they do have that fixed camera that we don't get access to that sort of the bird's eye view of the ballpark maybe they think that one would provide a better look but i'm with you i just don't see how the replays we've seen would allow you to overturn the call on the field i don't think so checking the headphones off and here's the call.

"Giants awaiting word from sean dunston chad chopped down in the video room and it looks like as we see the the replay the pence was safe the giants agree they're going to ask for the replay review so this i think is surely going to be overturned so the the replay we just saw pence bag foot hit the bag before the ball was in the glove of cody bellinger and they just showed it on the big screen here dodger stadium and it takes just a matter of seconds the uprise got on the headphones to new york and in new york they're already saying oh he's safe so the call has been overturned mike demure oh the first base umpire with the safcol but it was not the right call so they got it right that's the purpose of the replay review and this one was very quick so now the second era of the game by forsyth and those have accounting for the only baserunners of the game here is branded belt swinging the miss on curveball the count his own one i need toyota outoftown scoreboard the cubs in the marlins are still playing in miami there in the last of the thirteenth inning there it is one to one that was after the cubs at three homers and put eight runs on the board yesterday the infield with the over shift on for belt and he takes blowing outside another knuckle curve ball the count is one and one the dodgers had the over shift on for brandon belt and again they have foresight the third basement all the way over to play he's not sixty feet into the outfielder in the outfield at all this time he's just between the second baseman and damage of the first baseman seger the shortstop plays in the baseline at short nobody's at third here's the pitch belt swings and misses another curveball most wanted to three in a row donald swung admist at two of them and none of the pitches shown so far have been in the strike zone.
