"seahawks" Discussed on The Lead

"Smith keeps it. For the end zone. It's caught. Touchdown. Marquise Goodwin what it fell on fourth and one. And throwing in maybe the quote of the year for good measure. The folks you said had written you off, maybe? What is this say to them? Yeah. They wrote me off. I ain't right back though. That's the problem. I ain't right back. Let's go. Today, we're joined by the athletics Michael Sean dugar for a close look at how Gino Smith, Pete Carroll and the Seahawks have surged to the top of the NFC west. You just appreciate getting up a little bit more when you hit the canvas before. And I think because Gino has quote unquote been knocked down, I'm not referencing the punch, just kind of works with the analogy. Because he's been knocked down, getting up is inspiring people. And after a loss in Germany on Sunday, are the team's best days silhouette from wondering I'm Tiffany oshinsky. It's Wednesday, November 16th, and this is the lead. Michael Shawn dugar, welcome back to the lead where are we catching up with you right now? I am in downtown Munich in my hotel room right now, people like 9 hours ahead of back home right now, so my body's still a little thrown off even though I've been here since Thursday morning. I hope you're having a lot of fun out there. Yeah, it has been really fun. It's been nice to meet German fans. Once you are fans of my own podcast, just that follow me on the athletic or Twitter or Instagram or just seahawk fans from 5000 miles away. That has been just a fascinating, fascinating ride. Over the past few days, been just blown away by how dedicated these German fans are to a team from my hometown. Yeah, well, along those lines, you're in Munich for the first NFL regular season game in Germany and we'll get into what happened in that game a little bit later, but what was the atmosphere like in Germany at the game and bleeding up to the game? Yeah, leading up to it. It felt very similar to the London game. So Seattle played the Raiders in 2018 at Wembley Stadium and I was there for a few days in the lead up to that as well. And I hung out with some people from the UK C hawker's fan club. And have fan club is huge. And they were just so passionate. It was like one big tailgate for four days. So fast forward to Germany and I'm expecting something similar and it was like almost double the energy. Well, in part because there's Seahawks fandom is just, it's growing right now. Because now you got all the people who were either at the London game or missed the London game. Like, I'm not missing the Seahawks twice overseas. Or they're like, I got to get my second fix. You had like a combination of those two type of fans. We caught up with about 200 Seahawks fans. We joined them on a bus tour and they made sure that the 12s could be heard loud and proud on the streets of Munich. We're going to have the party bus. And we are ready to scream and yell and let Munich know we're here. I visited the Seahawks bar out here. It's called the August diner stump house. Christine, they started serving beer here in 6 1328. Yeah, 700 years ago, it's now adorned with all kinds of Seahawks gear. And whereas in London, I think it was very clear that the Seahawks are one of the biggest fan bases over there in the UK. They have the biggest fan base in Germany. This is considered the central hub for fans. We've seen a lot of folks from western Washington here this week. And this is where there will be former players greeting fans. KJ Wright is hosting a dinner. A live radio broadcast Saturday night. There's a huge fan rally expected as well. There was a line of getting that best seahawk pub on the Saturday before the game and the line was around the block. And then that was on top of the German sea hawkers also throwing their own party on the eve of the game as well, kind of following in the footsteps of the UK group. And that party, the line was around the block, as well, impact inside with DJ super Sam, the Seahawks in-house DJ, you know, spinning in there, just it's crazy. Also, again, like another just tailgate for the Seahawks, just 5000 miles away with lots of more beer and people speaking with accents. Okay, so I have to ask because I'm a steelers fan. And I think it's very well known that steelers nation is all around the world. So how did Germany become obsessed with the Seahawks of all teams, especially when Seattle, like you said, it's over 5000 miles away. What's the story there? So there's a proceeding TV. That's one of the networks out here. They bought the rights to the Super Bowl, just so that's the only game they would air on television. They bought the rights to believe in 2012. The next year if they added the conference championships to their television package. So who is in the conference championships that year? Again, the forty-niners who have a big fan base as well for similar reasons. And the Seahawks. So you only get two games really on the network television here and the Seahawks are in both of them during the conference championship and they're in the Super Bowl. And they're just you get to feel all their personalities in those games as well. I was talking to the president of the Seahawks, German fan club named Lucas, Lucas was telling me that he was just scrolling on TV one night, January 20th, 2014, and what do you know? He pops on. He's like, oh, wow. The Seahawks are playing the forty-niners. I don't know what's going on, and I'll give it a shot. Minutes into it, he can understand without knowing the rules just wow, whatever's happening here is something special. I can just tell, he was just hooked right there. The Seahawks are just a very unique team, I feel like, always have been, but I mean, especially the leisure of boom era, lots of different personalities that you could attach yourself to and maybe relate with. And then to imagine that's your introduction to the Seahawks and then two weeks later they go beat the crap out of the Broncos. So the Seahawks just got hot and had all of these entertaining personalities. It's great coach. This successful franchise just getting spoon fit to them from 5000 miles away. So perfect stone with everything just aligned with the television networks and the team being successful. 12 man really making a show across seasonal say. Yeah, very seriously, yes. So Mike, shifting gears to why we're here today. We've had you on our show before to look at the origins of the meme let Russ cook. We've talked to you about Gina Smith getting his shot last year as Russ is back up. So I guess we'll call this episode something like it's Gino's kitchen now. But let's jump back in time to march when the seahawks traded Russell Wilson. Moments ago, the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks reached agreement on a trade that will send 9 time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in a massive package of picks and players. What was the narrative around this team as Wilson was gone and it looked more and more like Geno Smith was going to be the starting quarterback. Well, was that the organization, perhaps more specifically the owner Jody Allen, she chose Pete Carroll and John Schneider over Russell Wilson. Because there was just a power struggle there that was just too much to bear. That could not continue as an unsustainable dysfunctional relationship. So she chose Jody had a choice to make. And she was criticized for that choice largely because of what Pete and John had done in the last few drafts in particular the way Peter was perceived as a coach by fans to have an antiquated preference for winning football games. How could you pick this 70 year old guy who drafted so and so and spent money on so and so and beliefs in so and so amount of rushing attempts when we actually have this 33 year old franchise quarterback future Hall of Famer who wants to just throw the ball more and have better alignment. Why not pick that guy?

Russell Wilson Booed by Seahawks Fans

"I did not see the game on Monday night with the Seahawks and the Broncos. Were you surprised that Russell Wilson got booed in Seattle? I was surprised, but I wasn't shocked, I guess, is the way I would put it. All the stories started coming out about, I don't know, it was kind of an organized campaign, these stories start coming out right before the game and the fans obviously there are legions to the team and not to the players. I think what shocked me more than anything was, it seemed like he don't got no friends. Y'all. It's so weird for somebody who is not an ass. You know, I could see why people would be like, hey cool, I don't really mess with them, but I feel like people actually actively don't like him, which is like, I don't know. I don't quite get it. Yo, so a couple things there. One, what I took from them booing him was the fans don't view him as being responsible for the Super Bowl in the ways that fans typically associate with a quarterback. I mean, they have been in quarterback heaven basically for the last ten years by having him, right? It's very hard to have that sort of thing. It's very rare that you got a situation like that. And normally, even if there's beef, this kind of a man, we want a Super Bowl. We had a great run with you, right? We gonna clap to support that one. Nope, they went on the booze thing, even if he wanted to be traded, right? Keeping in mind that the Seahawks wanted to trade him, which is its own fascinating story again because they were in quarterback heaven and they were still like nah, dog. We don't want no parts of this right here. Like, that part surprised me, but the bigger part, I think is what you touched on is I've never seen a player, not even Jay Cutler, right? Who you played with? Never seen a dude where everybody that seemed to be at least part of a certain era was just down on him. Doug Baldwin, all that money you got, got a lot to do with playing with Russell Wilson. He had something to say. Richard Sherman, we're not surprised because we had heard this from all those legion of boom guys as far back as it went and you're right. Russell's not an ass, but what seems clear to me, right? And you tell me if I'm wrong here, I was having a conversation with my good buddy, David Dennis, because I saw him all around the horn. And his argument was basically that the dudes think Russell is corny, and since they think he's corny, they come in at him, and I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. This isn't the way people like when they think you corny, this is the way people act when they think you phony.

Seahawks survive Russell Wilson's return, top Broncos 17-16

"The Seahawks spoiled Russell Wilson's return to Seattle with a 1716 victory over the Denver Broncos Geno Smith who had to fill in the vacancy when Wilson was traded to the Broncos in the off season passed for 195 yards and two first half touchdowns People can write you off but you know life's about what you make it And so I've just been blessed enough to be in the NFL for ten years and been working my butt off and it's a team game and we got to win tonight as a team Wilson passed for 340 yards and a score as the Broncos piled up 433 total net yards but Denver failed to capitalize turning the ball over twice with fumbles at the Seattle goal line Jim Bernard Seattle

"seahawks" Discussed on NFL Live

"To find the best matchup to find the best possible way to attack their opponent. And I believe you'll see that this year, when hunter renfrow has a one on one and the field is spread out. He's going to work inside the number. When Darren water Darren Waller gets to play the number one, you're going to figure out, is this a corner that's matching him? Is it a safety? And any devonte Adams matchup is a mismatch unless it's two of them. And so when you look at these things and you think about Derek Carr and here's what I'm going to say, I was talking to the head of their PR and he spoke about how much respect Derek Carr gained in the building last year for the way that he led and for the way that he carried this team to the playoffs. People look at Derek Carr like he doesn't have talent, right? When you watch when you watch a really good quarterback in the NFL, if there's no rush on him, football's do not hit the ground. Now, you might make a play or somebody might drop the ball. It's going to be where it's supposed to be every play. And I got to watch Derek Carr practice and I was like, yep. That's what it's supposed to look like. This dude is a top ten talent. Now he has these players around him along with Josh McDaniels. I agree with Tim. How long it takes to understand and master the offense is important, but when they do, they're going to be trouble and they're going to be difficult to stop. You just wonder about how much of that narrative around Derek Carr came from the previous regime and John Gruden having a reputation of always looking for the next quarterback. I think it's a completely unfair rap that he got. And he's had the numbers approve it, but this year could be even totally different. Let's go to devonta Adams old team, the Green Bay Packers, and all the people are concerned about how they're going to replace that production, right? But here's the thing. They still have that guy number 12 Aaron Rodgers to see him running out there on the field training camp and David back to Arya, by the way, came off the pup list this week for context, Rogers recently made it clear he wanted more out of his whiteouts, right? And then now here's what they're saying about him. I don't know if Sammy Watkins trying to get on his good side here, but he's a guy who's played with both Patrick Mahomes and now Rogers and he said this on comparisons, quote I think pat is incredibly good, but a rod is on a whole nother level. He's amazing how he controls the ball, how he puts everyone in place. I've been with a lot of quarterbacks and I've never seen them carry themselves like Aaron Rodgers. So Tim, as I referenced, lots been said recently about the wide receiver room for the packers, but with Rogers still a quarterback how much confidence do you have in this offense figuring it out? Plenty of confidence. I'm not worried about this offense taking a step back whatsoever. They got two really good backs. Yes, they have young wide receivers, but I think the quarterback is so good that he's going to make everyone around him better. And here's why I say that. The last four seasons, Aaron Rodgers has thrown a 136 touchdowns in 15 interceptions. That is almost incomprehensible. It is absolutely, it's essentially saying, I'm gonna throw 9 more touchdowns than I am interceptions every year. To go further with that, how about this stat right here? Touchdown and interception ratio for for a guy that's thrown for over 4000 yards in a season. Look who owns the top 6 seasons in ratios. Aaron Rodgers does. Number 7 is Patrick Mahomes. Now I get it. He's done it longer than Patrick Mahomes, but just a sense to kind of give you a sense of how much better he has been than everyone else in that regard. Look, a quarterback has a lot of jobs. Your main job is like throw it to your guys and then try to score. I mean, essentially what your job description is. Makes it so easy, right? Rose a lot of touchdowns? And he doesn't throw it to the other team. It's hard to do. He's done it way better than anyone else. Yeah, devonta Adams also said to us that Aaron Rodgers has the Michael Jordan effect. He makes everyone on the field better. But what I say to kind of Sammy Watkins statement, like duh, right? He was in Buffalo where nobody like Aaron Rodgers and buffalo. He was in LA. He was in Baltimore. Like he's never played with anyone this accomplished in the world. And when you compare him and Patrick Mahomes, what's the one thing we always compare? We compare it to talent, right? The off balance throws the ability to fit the football into tight spaces, be able to push the football down the field. Those are the things we keep those two on the same tier. Now think about this. One dude been doing it for a decade and a half plus. Right and he's seen every defense. He's seen any type of scheme you could throw at him, so that experience should make you different. The four MVPs should make you carry yourself different. All of those things wrapped up in one like gumbo, should make the pot really dang good and Aaron Rodgers should be different. This is not a knock on Patrick Mahomes, so nobody come out and say Sammy Watkins is dogging him 'cause Patrick Mahomes is great, but Aaron Rodgers walked into the world when he left the hospital, right? When he had his shopping cart and he was going out of the hospital, he had more than every other quarterback that's ever lived. And now I'm on top of that, you've played for great coaches. You've been in super bowls. You've had opportunities being NFC championships. You're going to be different. He's supposed to be and when Tim gives us the stats? That is crazy. All that. It's the nuts. And here's the thing I think is remarkable. We saw Patrick Mahomes who were all agreeing is great. Think of a little interception run and turnover run. They went on early last year. You know, sometimes you're unlucky, especially if you're aggressive with the football with which both guys are. I think it's also fair to Patrick Mahomes. And we clearly are not saying he's not amazing. But you know, all these guys that are other places talking about. It's a little bit like this. Like, you were great, but you're not throwing me the ball anymore. So now that guy's really good. The other thing is this though, and I don't want people to miss that. It's also respect, right? Because this is the thing. You know if you play with Patrick Mahomes, if you ever bring his name up in comparison to your quarterback, you're only bringing it up because he's thinking amazing. That's right. And it's like, this guy's so good. But we're talking about him compared to him. And I'm thinking this guy is better. So if you are wondering, though, how Aaron Rodgers has performed without devonta Adams is actually good news if you're a packers fan since 2019, Rogers 7 and O without Adams while throwing 19 touchdowns only one interception in those games. So listen, maybe it's going to be just fine. Holy cow, what a ball game we have here tonight in Pawtucket. There's no clock in baseball, but it was time that made an ordinary game legendary. It was just the battle. It was just the battle for the last run. When we got to 25 innings, 27 innings, 30 innings. I'm thinking. Wow. We have a chance here tonight in little Tucker Rhode Island to get in the history books, listen now on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Amazon music or wherever you get your podcasts. Back to our top stories right this second in the NFL, Adam Schefter, what's going on with Jimmy Garoppolo? Well, Laura, we've been waiting all off season for an answer on Jimmy Garoppolo. We are coming up to the time when the forty-niners are going to have to make a decision. But so is Jimmy Garoppolo because obviously the team can decide to either release him, maybe try to restructure his contract, what is Jimmy Garoppolo want to do? What's his best option? Both sides are going to have choices. But once this weekend's preseason games kick off an end, both sides will have to figure out what's in their best interest to move forward. It's not out of the question that Jimmy Garoppolo could decide to return to San Francisco if that makes the most sense, which is an option that a lot of people would not have seen coming. Maybe the forty-niners still find a trade partner, depending on what happens in the last weekend of the season or maybe the forty-niners and Jimmy Garoppolo can't figure out a restructured contract and they decide to release him in which case he wouldn't decide to do that unless he felt like there was a better offer out there. So there's a lot of things that both sides are going through right now, but it's about to come to a head in the next week or so. Yeah, Adam, really important information there and you see it on your screen. $24.2 million base salary this season. So Jimmy G is like, if I'm not getting more or a better deal or better opportunity somewhere else, I'm just going to sit here and be paid my money. All right, thanks for

"Welcome to NFL live. Just 15 days away from the start of the 2022 NFL regular season and soon we get to see Devante Adams with the Raiders at new team in Vegas. He joined the pivot and explained why he's so excited to play in the Raiders offense now, so no looking back to the packers for him, but speaking of the packers, Aaron Rodgers lit into his receivers and now Sammy Watkins is telling everyone why a rod is better than mahomes, did the guys agree we'll talk about it. Plus, dak Prescott says the cowboys are in a better spot now than they were last year this time. Here's why he's so optimistic in just a bit and see if these boys agree. We got Tim Hasselbeck and studio Ryan Clark here as well. That means we got two hosts. Here's what I'm gonna say that you just did that so well after me trying to do it and then only giving me one step. Now I'm really embarrassed and you even went down the stairs the whole thing. I'm just gonna host all radio. No, no, you're gonna be back posting this show. Adam Schefter's with us for the rest of the show as well. He's got some news. Guys, this quarterback situation in Seattle is fascinating, so let's start there if you will with me. Pete Carroll keeps saying that Geno Smith does have the slight edge over drew lock, but after Locke wasn't able to play in Thursday's game because of COVID, this battle still neck and neck and a reminder, the Monday Night Football season opener right here on ESPN as Seahawks versus the Broncos and their former quarterback Russell Wilson, so here's Pete Carroll on the current cubase. I'm going to call it, but I want to let the guys battle and let them show where they are and let us get as much information as possible. Genome has done a really good job of being in that position. His voice is solid. He's on point all the time. He's been very consistent with his work. All of that. And drew has been really sharp. I know it's not supposed to be a good situation when you have two quarterbacks. It means you don't have one as they'll say, you know, but I don't know if that's we might have two ones. We'll see what happens. We'll get back to that. Okay, while dino Smith and drew locker at different points in their careers, both are looking to secure the starting role in Seattle, sharing quite a few similarities and you see it numerically there. Vote for second round draft picks, both of a career 59% completion percentage, and they're separated by just three points in total QBR based on the numbers, easy to see why this is a tight race, and if you see them in practice as well, you get a little bit more of a sense of that, but Tim, when you just heard what Pete Carroll said, let's try to decipher some of that. What are your thoughts on their situation? My thoughts are this. That they don't have two ones. That's my thoughts on this. But here's how I read this situation. Look, they wanted drew lock to be the starting quarterback. He hasn't played better than Geno Smith. Some of that because he's mistimed because of COVID. And so now what they have is a backup quarterback who's their starter who can't get beat, who is not getting beaten out by a guy who they wanted to be their starter. And so now instead of two ones, they actually have two twos. That's what they have in Seattle. That's how I'm reading that situation. I think they're disappointed that drew lock hasn't come in and played well enough to win the job. Right. Yeah, so RC when you think about the quarterbacks, that's one thing, but then there's the rest of the team as well. So considering the thing holistically, how much confidence do you have in Seattle heading into this season? None? Yeah, like Tim, Tim, people are going to think what Tim said was his opinion, but it's actually 100% fact they literally have two twos drew lock was the two behind teddy Bridgewater and the guy you're playing the first week. They traded him and a bunch of other things to get that guy. The other guy who he's battling for the position with was the guy that actually backed up, the guy that you played the first week. So essentially, you really have two twos. I mean, Jay-Z wrote a song about this on reasonable doubt. That was called 22 twos. They could have fit this quarterback situation into it. And when you look at a team that's already struggling on the backend defensively, they're not strong on the offensive line. And now trying to figure out who is going to be there starting quarterback when they actually do have a solid set of skill players. That's an issue. What you wanted right now if you're a Pete Carroll is to say, drew lock is coming here. He's totally won over the locker room. He's done everything he possibly could to be the starting quarterback. Had he done that whether it was last week the week before, he would be named the starting quarterback like much like Baker Mayfield is, but because he has it and you know Gino Smith is the two as well. Now you're saying, we're just going to wait, which we can name it right now, but we have a lot of comparisons perfect, right? On the money. Carolina example is absolutely perfect. Because you see somebody who came in as the new guy and then won over the locker room was able to win the job and it's interesting because I was just out there in Seattle and in talking to Pete Carroll and talking to this coaching staff and also seeing how the team reacts to both quarterbacks certainly drew lock getting COVID factors in here. He was supposed to start that second game in the preseason all along. That plan gets foiled. You'll see him play a lot in this final preseason game, but with only three preseason games, they're running out of time here to get drew lock an opportunity to really grab this job and run with it and you mentioned the good skill players. You got DK Metcalf. You have Tyler Lockett, just watching the way that the rest of the offense responded to Geno Smith much more positively than they did to drew lock. So some of that familiarity, but I do think it's important context when you think about how this whole thing is going to shake out. And Adam, when you look at this from a larger standpoint, people say, well, why not bring Jimmy Garoppolo in? He's a guy that is still looking for a spot potentially. There are two schools of thought there because if you bring him in, then you're saying, all right, we've got someone who could potentially help us win a lot of games. If you don't bring them in, you say maybe you're looking ahead to the 2023 draft. What are you hearing? Well, I don't think they're looking at Jimmy Garoppolo right now. Is a viable option. There's certainly not going to trade for him. And I don't know that they would go ahead and consider him even if the forty-niners were to release Garoppolo, which is no guarantee. The Seattle Seahawks are waiting for one of these guys to win the job. Drew lock looked pretty good in the first preseason game against Pittsburgh and as you mentioned, was on track to start the second week when he got COVID and so now he'll play the third week with see how he does, but I don't think Jimmy Garoppolo is in play for Seattle right now. Don't know that he will wind up being in play for Seattle. Seattle's quarterback looks like he'll come from one of those two guys and we'll see which one they decide to go with after the final preseason game. Yeah, 100% you can expect to see a ton of drew lock in that game three. So we'll see how that ends up looking. All right, thanks so much to Adam, there. Let's transition on to another quarterback situation that has a lot of conversation around it, but different kind of pressure for two a ton of my lower in Miami lofty expectations for this dolphins offense and they put weapons galore around him, right? So now it's up to him to show what he's capable of and so far the team itself feels great. Here's tua with more. The confidence that the guys have coming out to practice is different. The confidence that the guys have coming into the building is different. You know, the way we do things around the building is different. Just everything. I can't necessarily point to one thing. Obviously, our head coach, who is probably one of the most optimistic people I've ever been around. And I would say just those guys and kind of the leadership that might display for everyone to see that I think that's what gives the entire the entirety of the team confidence. Notable additions, including Mike mcdaniel, the new head coach, you just heard two of shouting out and really nice ways there. He's going to be calling the shots. Of course, tyreek hill coming in, he was acquired from the chiefs. They also bolstered the offensive line. I think this could be maybe the most important piece of their addition signing to run Armstead in Connor Williams to help out to a give him a little more time to throw. So Tim, after hearing what two would just said, how do you expect tua in this dolphins offense to perform this season? I expect them to have his best year of his entire career. And I love how he's talking about this. And let me preface this by saying, tua is not

"So Mike, one of the joys of having you on this show is we always get some tremendous movie references connected to Seahawks football. So given everything that's happened, is there a movie that comes to mind to sum up the season so far? There are two, and you gotta follow me here. Okay. Eagle eye and eye robot. Those are the two movies that I'm going deep here. So the reason I would pick those two movies is because they revolve around a power struggle, which is very important dynamic here with Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll. Isn't it possible that Russell Wilson made some noise in the off season about his contract and other things about having some control in Seattle? Is it possible that maybe he just wants it's time in the money and it's not controlled? Maybe he wants a fresh start. And both of those movies you get like a creation, which this case would be Russell. He is the artificial intelligence. I think an eagle eye it's called Arya, and in iRobot is called Vicky. And the partnership works out. And then along the way as the movie progresses in both cases, the artificial intelligence figures out, wait a minute. I can actually function without you. Robots don't feel fear they don't feel anything. They don't get hungry, they don't sleep. I do. I have even had dreams. I don't need you. In fact, you are actually the problem, which is why in both cases, the machines try to take out the humans, and those particular movies, they realize, I can function at a high level and achieve what you intended for me to achieve without you. And in some in a way, you are actually holding me back. Now the humans went out and both of those because, of course, kind of movie with the machines when we'd be screwed. As a society, but those movies ended, obviously, this is we're about halfway through. But I think that the idea of like a power dynamic coming to a head between two parties is best representative of Seattle season. Wow, if I had tried to guess your movie pic, I never would have thought off the board, sci-fi, deep cuts. That is incredible. So with that in mind, we're going to make the leap from sci-fi to Seahawks football, which apparently is a short one. So we're here today to talk about whether or not this Seahawks season can be saved. And what it means for the Seahawks and Russell Wilson if it keeps spiraling the wrong direction. So first, what has gone wrong for them on the field? I think that on offense, they're having a problem scheming up easy throws for Russell. It's like, all right, when we need quick, easy completions that schema our guys open, it's things that are easily defensible outside of perhaps the play action deep shots. That's one thing. On defense, they just couldn't cover nobody for about 5 weeks. And that was a big, big, big problem, man. Real bad. And I think the players were underperforming, but I think the macro issue is the gamble that the Seahawks took as an organization at cornerback. They let Shaquille Griffin walk in the off season, Seattle drafted a corner in the fourth round. Continuing Pete Carroll streak of never drafting an outside cornerback higher than 90th overall. That's in the third round. So if peak hero is not going to be a guy who's going to pay for outside cornerbacks and free agency and you're not going to pay a premium via draft capital, that's a poor gamble at a premium position. And then now they have bad secondary, which could turn around here pretty soon, but it's an organizational failure, I think that led to the disaster that their defense was through the first 5 weeks of the season. The legion of boom is feeling like a faint and distant memory right now. No, indeed. And that was not like genius. That led to that, either they took an obvious first rounder in Earl Thomas who was killing it at Texas. And found some diamonds in the rough and cam Chancellor and Richard Sherman and legit have not really drafted any good defensive backs since then. Okay, so shaky defense, predictable offense, Russell Wilson's hurt. Now they desperately need some wins and the task of trying to win games is now in the hands of journeyman backup Geno Smith. This is a guy I think who the casual fan who might not follow the Seahawks could easily forget is still in the NFL before the last couple weeks. So how would you sum up Geno's career so far? It's like an exercise or a case study in perseverance and perhaps humility as well, 'cause you gotta look at genome. He has been the guy. You know, in high school, he was the guy at West Virginia. And he got drafted in the second round. He I think he was signed to roc nation, you know, Jay-Z's agency. He played for the jets. That's a high of highs. It does not really get much bigger than playing quarterback for the New York Jets. It really does not. So he was on a really big high. And it didn't go well. You know, we got into a fight with a teammate and ended up losing his job, had to be a backup for a while. He fell off the mountaintop, even if it's not his fault he fell. He just fell. That's the reality of it. And he had to accept that and wait his turn again, which is very hard for quarterbacks in particular quarterbacks are so used to be in the guy. So accepting a backup job is humbling, accepting a backup job behind guys like Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson, guys who never get hurt. Like ever, really, three of the most durable quarterbacks in the NFL history for him to accept backup jobs behind them. That's what I think is perseverance and a little bit of humility. Like, dude, you're not even getting a chance to compete because that's just not where you are compared to our guy. Even with Seattle, you know, he keeps resigning with Seattle and one of your deals knowing Russ's Iron Man. That is tough to do, man to accept that you're going to be you're going to play the background. No one's going to be screaming your name on Sundays. You know, your family can come to the games with the angle do that but watch you warm up. That's a very humbling experience. You know, when you're used to having your girl or your mom or your brother or sister or whatever at every game, watching you ball. And then that's why Gino admitted, sometimes he'd fight back tears before games. Just preparing every single time. It is gut wrenching sometimes. You know, sometimes I fight bacterias before the game's like, man, I wish I could be out there. Knowing that he goes through the same stuff as rest warming up, watching tape. You know, grinding that practice only to go on Sundays and just sit there. And watch. That's very hard. Reality is you got to prepare and you gotta keep preparing. And that's something that I proud myself on. It's being prepared and always being ready and that goes mentally physically and everything else. So I don't know how this will look going forward, but I think that chapter or two of Geno smith's career is very human. That is to just try to persevere and be humble and be patient. Those are three things that all of us struggle with. But I'm sure that if all of us combine those three elements, we probably ended up getting where we wanted to be in life. Also, after all that waiting, Smith got his chance unexpectedly a couple weeks ago against the rams when Russell Wilson's finger bent the wrong direction. So walk us through how Geno looked after he came in. He looked like a starter. He did. He looked really good, came in, down two scores against the team with Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey on national television in a situation where Pete's philosophy had nothing for him. Like we can't just run the ball to help you out. Dude, you got to throw me down. Help. Help us. Right now and he did it. He led them down there through a 23 year touchdown a DK Metcalf. And I was taking it back. Over 9 to go. End zone Metcalf touchdown. Gino. I think I just tweeted, I tweeted holy shit, I think. That's it. That's all I had at that moment through that touchdown DK 'cause I just didn't know what was going on. It was surreal. I was like, are we dreaming? Are we in a video game? Is Geno Smith really leading the Seahawks on this drilling comeback on national television right now? Fans chanting his name. Well, who would have thought? As they start chanting Geno here in Seattle that he would have a chance to win this game against the rams. Amazon rail was storybook. Now he ended up throwing an interception that ended the game. Smith throws passes picked and the drama is over. No flags on the play and Knicks Scott has it for the rams. I can fell down so I don't entirely fault that to Gino, but just the fact.

So the parts of a fucking wale Boy all right. Yeah so Mike holmgren and his baleen seattle seahawks. Never mike holmgren never beat The patriots really not a surprise. Because i felt like this team was ill prepared for this game. Like they came out. I think even Holmgren said like at halftime. It's like oh we came out jumpy in the first half. Which is the reason they were down. Twenty to nine or twenty two longer in seattle or the packets producers hackers. Yeah is there for a while. Living in win some towns of deans. Miki great apple. Is there with pharma on the super bowl. Seahawks they lost. They lost to Big ben yeah. I think it was. Oh five thirteen and three yeah. It was Osberg loses this year as a rookie. So next year the but yeah he won the super bowl in green bay ninety six against the patriots right and then made the super bowl the next year to is that the they lost to brett farve upper for John elway and the broncos talk start interrupts mama clock got. My options are odell beckham. Junior or cooper cup odobi. Yeah i'm already be cop could be fucking good though. I don't think. I think that anchor mayfield baker mayfield's going to be the better day. I'll trust you this hour taking cup. But i think the i think the render overrated this year especially offensively. They just get hurt if they had injuries. They get nothing behind it. We got sony now though. He's pick alex. So maybe i don't know we'll see More about these you good greg. I'm good looking more about these. Mike holmgren seahawks This is the year that they traded for jerry rice and this is the year that jerry rice finally sucked up twenty five catches three hundred sixty yards hitting on the season now. I didn't even see him. But this was like i thought the this game on fox too because an nfc team. I thought the commentators were like pushing real hard for this to be seattle's opportunity like they had this is. This is their coming out. Party against the champs that i guess they had a heartbreaking loss the week before where they were up twenty four seven at the half against the rams and they ended up losing thirty three how we're getting compensated sorely because there they're terrible but i have a note. All caps did fox jinx. The yankees an investigation. So we'll get to that we'll get to..

What do you think well the. Gm of the mets sandy. Alderson's that used to be in. The commissioner's office correct. So he can admit a statement saying this. Yeah sorry and a plunge is he said that didn't mean to offend anybody and we're very sorry and all. I'm sure it's it's going to go away. Golden door you. You're three hundred and forty million dollar country. Just can't do this. Yeah just they pay your salaries in some roundabout way. But i honestly think that the players have a pretty good point. And i and i really do feel for a lot of the guys i know. They're making a ton of money. I know that you know it's a great lifestyle. They lead all they have to put up with. Is you know some people taking shots at them on twitter. Whatever but that doesn't make any less real. They're still human. Beings heck brought play professional sports once. He's a real human. I've come to understand that over the years. These guys have feelings. They're not they're not like they're not robot. "A lot. It happens a ton specifically with that team in that city. So if this were gonna happen brock it were. It was going to happen with the mets. But i don't think this is just the mets or their fans. The mets are an easy target. And they're a catalyst for this obviously and the fact that the owner cohen opened the door with his public criticism of the team. I think is unique to them. Also the mets are a tabloid team. That's kind of what they are. They're always to get the attention in town. That cares much more about the yankees and other things so they're constantly looking for attention and cohen is looking for attention and all of that so this is in some ways. Like a logical. Oh no because there's no maybe now second fiddle. Yeah but maybe now but for years. The clippers were a national joke. It's hard for me to ever get over that. And that's on a national joke ever the same way i mean they've they've lost one a couple of championships and they've been in the in the finals and like they're generally. They're good a lot but there. There's something inherently wrong with them and they're and essentially new york. It's that they're not the yankees. That's what's wrong with them. They're just not the yankees and because they're in queens and like they've lost over fans jets and met yes yes tons of cross jet sauce over nets mets islanders. Yes yup yankees. Giants rangers knicks. Yep exactly that's generally kind of manhattan or means long. Yeah and you see opposite. I mean there's opposites but people have a mixed but that's generally. I would say kind of what you get in new york so here. Here's what i texted dave's dude. I need your opinion on love. It was yeah. That's what i figured he said. I hope it escalates. We deserve. I want the whole team in the dugout with paper bags over their head. Like jeff fan.

"Top four top four. Who's ahead of them. I think aaron rodgers is there using roger has been heard and we've seen them succeed. Not really we've seen them fall off a cliff and jordan lebas backup. I don't think they pick judah smith can't run with a falling down. Gino had it could cam. That's her drew responded. True at all step up in the pocket he let them. On a touchdown drive was much better. Nope nope nope nope. We've liked to banner about his war right as wins above replacement brussels more valuable than rogers. I just i believe that aaron donald. Yeah he's back we've seen. What have the they were still really good without. Aaron donald against the seahawks last year. Tom brady number one yeah. I don't yeah backing brady up now. Trask who yeah. That's great. that's not a real person not good all right. Tom brady is number one. Yes based on that. Tom brady hatrick mahomes number to tread hannie backing him up. Sorry that's key chat any still league all right. Patrick mahomes. Tom brady a fine. I'll give you those two russell's next okay so he's number three yes he also would mean i think watching this preseason seven or eight wins at least wins above replacement would if they were to go actually like thinking seventeen game weird so let's say they were to go thirteen and four this year with russell wilson. You think that they would go you. That's not going to happen. That's something six and eleven is at six eleven. have this. Math is all over the place to add one. Whatever he's too can six. You'd think they'd be six seventeen without them if they are a yes. Fourteen thirteen team with them. I think so you think might be bigger. I don't know they win a game. Based on what i've seen so far there's bad teams out there and you know over the course. Lame any of them. I russell wilson's wins above replacement. Might be as many ways as they have this year. Peyton manning's i'm not joking. We found out for literally. We found out that that was peyton. Manning's war as many games as his team would have won. That was his war. They went without him. They didn't win a game two and fourteen. They did like one in to win. It went to your points. Granted it was at least double digit wins if not more. Yeah and i think russell wilson's is probably the same. Here's what i don't know mike. I don't know how much autonomy shane waldron is going to truly have and i don't know his accurate on game day for being a step ahead of the defenses. He's going to face. I watched his tape. Bbn i know we talked to sources very close. He really got out ahead of belmont hill. An rocker latin that year. Yes but this first time doing that with care. Who we know is involved right. We can look back at some of the history with tom. Cable enduro level. We can look back at the start of the schottenheimer era where they went to remember what happened little. We're on this faith. Junket little come to jesus meeting right with shot like no no no. We're not we're not doing that. We're not putting this all on russell. We're not going to be that kind of team. We're going to get back to who we are. We know last year in the third fourth down situation against the rams in the second half. We know that. Pete got involved in gets on the headsets and is going to be. It's going to be involved. We know that has no relationship prior to the season. Shane waldron right. So just to be clear. You're not saying waldron can't do this. You're saying no yet. I mean that's something we are going to find out totally don't know and we didn't find out any of it during the preseason. There's no way there is no chance there is nothing in the preseason they were vanilla was finally nice to see by the way in the in the third game. Some of what. You're going to say for nationally. Little shits sweep little check with me. Tie tight formations. I think things that you will see. But as far as his accuracy as far as pete's role in it as far as any of that as far as just his quality of being a play caller. That's ahead of your opponent has no experience so i don't know how any of that is going to look. Okay here's what i do know. I do know that. Chris carson's gonna make some incredible runs this year. He's going to look like the best league best back in this league a more than one occasion more than one game maybe multiple games. He's going to be an absolute monster. I know that i also know that. He's going to be hampered by injury and backs two and three on this roster have to be difference makers and that concerns me. alex collins. Quick feet looks great slim but he doesn't have a lead speed in this system. requires that this system. You've got to put your foot in the ground and you've got to have a unique gear. Shod penny i. Here's what i know about penny. He has elite unavailability skills. No that's not true. I mean he's you're saying only one. Right i mean that's cj process. Forget we're getting pretty close territory. Had the toes ankle the knee the quad the hamstring the tummy ache. You think that he's precisely very prone is what you're saying. I'm saying that fell style. You guys were soaking in those three words. I was trying to determine. Because i read your email about how you would thought it was carlos hyde so i was trying what you man. What's rashad pani. Yes elite unavailability skills. That unfortunately has been his track record for three years. Just when you want to get excited and acl was catastrophic. And that's horrible. And that's awful and that was real but wade issues thi- issues Soft tissue issues been a problem. You look pretty good. I thought this preseason. I always think i thought he did. I look pretty good in the third game. They look fine. I thought he couldn't practice. And i thought he looked at the third preseason game. Here's what i don't know doesn't get a response from it up for the record. One thing i do know mike rashad panic looked good but but i will say that you.

"Forty one yeah get there. A gap is huge. And i'm not saying that. We don't like brandon. I because i know that these guys and whatnot but that's just too big of a gap between deal being under under drafted. I think depots being a little bit under drafted that being said it. My rankings don't necessarily reflect that feeling. What do you think matthew. So i have i twenty three. I have deebo samuel at thirty five. So i have about a ten spot difference exactly twelve spots between them and i agree with you on my rankings. Do reflect that. I'm crazy for a second. I've depot twenty eight. Wow do you believe twenty-eight who's traffic you guys are all nuts so you have deebo higher than i do you basically in the same area for i haven't twenty two twenty three thirty five twenty eight. I think there's a good case to be made for him. Being as high as you have him. I think pre people forget how good diba was over the second half of his rookie year and then he gets and then he gets hurt and then i get the chance but my concern here. Field isn't about the talent i think. Deebo samuel is in a talent at an insanely talented young man. Same with brennan. The concern is to full is that we haven't seen what this offense looks like at full strength it's been so there've been so many injuries and so many pieces. What is this offense. Look like with a healthy. George kit a healthy deebo samuel healthy brennan and trae lance under center. We just. We don't know what that offense looks like so trying to project becomes really tough again. This is super small sample size but last year weeks. Four through seven weeks. Four through seven. Deebo samuel george kettle and brennan all played again. It's like very early. And i made them right but i'm just saying like geeking injected in in that in that period here brennan was wide receiver forty three per game depot was wide receiver. Fifty three per game kill of course titan one per game. There's a chance that we know this is an offense that wants to be more run heavy than pass heavy like there's a chance that these guys eat into their target share a bit. We know that kiddle is going to be the focal point of that passing game touches for both deebo and euch right does it go to just one versus the other. I believe what we just looked. Talented oh no. That's the thing is that's what you have to trust here. I believe what we just if we use four. Seven is our our sort of window to look through going forward. I believe that is. That's that's just like a failure of logic like barely. I know i know i reject that data point okay. Super early on by the end of the season was a freaking rockstar. Okay unbelievable right right. He also but he also got a lot of volume because there was no one else. Allow you yeah. I think there is plenty of volume for three passengers on this. I really truly do. And by the way like talent hedge. And who knows what happens with trae lance the quarterback one that eventually takes place like who knows the height of this often. So i mean who knows heights of this. I just but but you're asking why. I'm a little less optimistic than you. We both agree in the talent. We both agree in the scheme fit. We i'm just concerned that there's a lot of and it's a nice problem for san francisco to have but there's a lot amounts of feed and ken this offense which we know we'll be run heavy. Yep willie run heavy offense. That's going to have a pretty good defense in isn't gonna get into a ton of shootouts. Is that offense good enough to support. Three fantasy pass catchers plus a viable fantasy running back. I think so. Obviously i'm i'm not as optimistic as you are in that particular case i do. Listen i don't have the much. I'm seven spots behind you on depot once about behind you and i you so we're not that far apart but i'm just. I'm not as optimistic as you. Because i do think. There's a lot amounts of feed. And i think there's going to be one game it'll be killed game that'll be a game it'll be like i don't know that there's going to be a lot of games. Where all three are fantasy rockstar. i think so. I think there will be instaphone yet. We have to close it out here. Let me ask you this. How many points and who are by and who were the forerunners beating in the super bowl this year. Wow let's see. I haven't even gotten off. I don't wanna. I don't want say right now. I just look their toughest might be there in the nfc west. It might be getting so nfc west. What's going to happen after they beat the lions and the championship game in the nfc championship game to go to the super bowl game. Since one thousand nine hundred there you go. Here's an interesting thing that i thought got sort of swept under the rug during that whole discussion. The idea that fields a good athlete like you know. I know coach rabah the legendary coach. Ray yeah. He lives in my hometown. My colleagues across sorry who coach. Sorry yes appeals. Caused across coach at wesleyan. And i remember tom and he says i work with field. I'm like yeah listen. I got a question coach. Just curious like listen. Just you know as as a as lacrosse player. How was field. Like you've coached so many kids over the years. How was field as lacrosse player. And he took a moment and considered it and goes. He's a really nice kid. Hard worker i kid. He said he says yeah. He really enjoyed coaching. You said you were very very nice. He took direction. Well you listened or don't make sense. Playing sports in college doesn't mean you play them. Well team was a very different story. I've never heard from that. Don't don't you worry about that as matthews tennis coach still around for us to outdo absolutely is i can tell you exactly what he would say but listen. I'm i'm also a two sport college athlete by the way all right a beer pong beer pong in wrestling like wrestling. Just leave it at that look. I'm anyway visual around the show. Thank i'm charlie making that up. Here's what i would say is My college co. My tennis coach is still around and what he would say. The great tommy canal is that i was. I never hustled. And i rarely use my feet. He would constantly yell at me. I can to this day. I can hear him as a fourteen year old. I can hear him yelling. Move your feet berry. Move your feet because they never move my feet but yelled hang on. hang on. i had incredible focus. I incredible determination and unbelievable consistency. Like the way i played tennis was you hit the ball twenty times. Hit back twenty one. You hit a twenty two hundred twenty three like i didn't hit a ton of winners but you never got past me. I was always able to keep the ball in play in just super consistent and i just wore opponents down yup which is wondering. Why aren't gonna call around the offices at why where down the tennis court. We gotta go because.

"Our in michigan say. Wow it's so hard to believe. You want to know why in michigan because if you bet twenty bucks on the lions to win right now you're gonna wind like ten thousand dollars. Because that's how bad the lines twenty bucks twenty buses nothing attached to the lombardi trophy and his face stop Let's go back to the news. Talk about these quarterbacks against so defying has stated that it's going to be an think we all agree. It's going to be jimmy garoppolo to start the season at least barring a late late change of heart from the forty niners but matthew draft reggie wise. Don't draft jimmy g. Find a way to get freelance on your roster. The upside is immense. Yeah that's exactly right. I mean trey. Lance made my loveless. He's one of the guys that i felt like is worth stashing because the upside is so huge. San francisco has one of the best offensive lines. We know what kyle shanahan can do with rookie running quarterbacks. We saw it in washington with rg. Three i like. He has gotten massive fantasy seasons out of quarterbacks before obviously the best season of matt ryan's career was under cao shanahan. So i think when you think about these skill set of trae lands the arm and the running ability we always talk about. How important is to get quarterbacks that can get you fantasy points. Both of their arms and their legs. I think trailers has a chance to be something special in fantasy and given the weapons there in san francisco. We're going to talk about deebo samuel and brennan you george kibble and the running backs here in a second but once trae sermon becomes the starter wants become trae. Someone becomes the starter. And i think it's a matter of of win not if but when tracer and becomes the starter. He's going to be a very very viable fantasy starter. I think a very like. I start his borderline top. Twelve and the sky's limit for this kid. It's confusing because there's two traits trade sermon. You meant trading land of course the quarterback but the point. Yes trae lance. Yes sorry trae sermon. Trae lance quarterback north dakota state. Sorry trae lance. Did i say trae throughout that thing just just very just one more time just for the video radio people. I apologize guys. I will say this trae lance. It's important to get quarterbacks that get fantasy points with their arms and their legs trae. Lance has that ability that dual threat ability. We know kyle. Shanahan has the ability to get fantasy points out of his quarterbacks. And so when not if win trae lance becomes the quarterback of the forty niners. I think it is immediate an immediate fantasy starter and very much worth drafting at the end of your draft and stashing on your bench because i think the upside is so big with trae lance in this offense. Now talk about the running backs which will include trae sermon. Just a moment. They have a lot of backs in san francisco right now. They've god where he most. They've got trae sermon. They've got weighing allman. Eventually jeff wilson back. After tearing his to michael hasty they claimed off of waivers and look pretty good for them last year to gangling back to you. What was your read on this backfield when you spend time at training gay. Yeah i think we're he most is the clear number one in the backfield right now. He's electric if you remember. He had a couple of plays last year where he reached the top speed of anyone in the nfl. One of those was that eighty yard play in week two before. He had his first injury. Which was a sprained. mc l. And then dealt with a high ankle sprain later in the season so he only played in eight games last year. Nine games in two thousand eighteen. You mentioned the running backs. They have depth there at. This is why they have depth. They've dealt with a lot of injuries at that position so remote again leads the charge there but they have to have insurance and as kyle shanahan has shown us he likes to use multiple backs multiple receivers and kind of inner change those two positions when he can so the hardest part for of the forty niners. This year is that. I think one of these running backs go to wind up being value. Clearly there's going to be stretches. Where like where he most has like a six game stretch where he just the clear cut guy and he kills it right art. You'll start and then maybe late in the year. Jeff wilson comes back and he has four years where is useful. The problem is that. Like i could see any of them being useful for a given stretch matthew so i think draft strategy is. Do we think it's worth investing in somebody like where he most or if you're going to go on this for niners back say you know what bank on. The upside of someone like trae sermon. A third round pick out of ohio state. The oklahoma trae sermon made my others resume votes on my love. Hate list so he. He's one of my favorite late round targets this year because i think his skill set is a perfect match with the kind of running game that they run in san francisco Having said that remote toss them really. Almost moster is really really good. Big playability thirsty. Kyle found this stott. All running back rahima sturt let all running backs in percentage of getting at least five yards. Minimum one hundred carries like like win rahima healed. He's a big play and happen. The problem is him getting on the field. He's missed fifteen games over the last three seasons as well for some reason they didn't really use them a lot at the goal line last year..

"Man. Sorry so low. There would pay all right finally to machine. Anyway i would say is is that like i think i wanna say forty six percent of his fantasy points. Last year came from three games. He had nine weekly finishes in a sixteen game season. He had nine weekly finishes where he was wide. Receiver forty or worse as vice like like weeks where he killed you like not you know not like i was a tough game like like Wrong all right exactly like you would have been better off. Starting thirty nine other wide receivers in by the way with him. It's never like hey. He's gonna be locked up by jalen ramsey this week. It's like they're playing against whoever. The was the worst pass defense in the nfl last year. And they still. They still had these weird games. It was very hard to pinpoint. Those games were coming. He very inconsistent. And we say that sometimes a lot but true tyler. Lockett is a best ball player. He's he's much better for for that or for deeper leagues again. He's insanely talented. Nfl wide receiver. He's one of the reasons why i really like russell wilson. I would've put him on my hitlist this year. Except i have carson and wilson on my love listeners dislike like and i do believe that the entire offense takes a step up so i ended up leaving him off of that but i am certainly much lower on him than consensus. Just like you are you. And i both helmet wide receiver twenty four. He's going inside the top twenty at wide receiver nineteen. I won't have a lot of shares of tyler walk at this year no matter and i'm a fan of the player. I'm a fan of the person. And he's gonna make russell wilson better but yeah just way too inconsistent and fantasy to be drafted that high again as amazing player got sixty nine million dollars extension. It's great deserves every penny of it but last word here on the seahawks is gerald everett. Matthew i don't want to spend. We've we've named several tight ends that fit into this category of guys who are like good useful players who could be top twelve with everything breaking right. That's what he s for. Me is a very very good athlete. The seahawks do have other tight ends on their roster. They always do. They just brought back. Luke wilson this liaise still there. We know they've always had a lot of tight end. Is this the year one breaks through or you sorta like it. Could but i'm not banking. No i i like gerald albert. I will say. I will say i always really liked will d'isly who was a thing and then got injured. And just you know. And then they signed greg olsen and so. It's been a tough sort of road again. Yeah it's been a tough road for. We'll disagree but i do think there is talent there with having said that gerald everett when he has gotten you know an opportunity with the rams he produced to your point athletic tight end. You're on the field of roles in good things can happen. They like the titan in seattle. And of course the other thing here is that you think about it where was jailed last year in la. Their offense coordinator shane waldron. Where was he last year. La i'm just saying right. I mean like that. Like i'm sure that gerald ever did not get signed by the seahawks without saying shane waldron. What do you think about gerald everett right and chain waldron's probably like thumbs up. Get me gerald everett. And so i do think he is an interesting sleeper. He's not currently being drafted and over ninety five percents of espn leagues. I think i haven't ranked tied in twenty five. I haven't low low of the of the late round tight end flyers. I think there's a better chance for jailed. Everett at least at this point in the preseason then adam trotman who is somebody that i really liked a lot but you know banged up. And we're hearing john johnson and some of those other guys like anthony. I suddenly doesn't have as much shine. Like they're using some other guys there in tennessee. So if you're taking a flyer in that range. I do think gerald everett's interesting yes daniel dot i call on you matthew berry here recognizes you. I tell you. I appreciate that. "Who are ranked like aaron jones or a nick chubb players might have slightly more work weekend and week out. Let's get to the wide receivers matthew and we're talking about two of the very best. In fantasy in real life period decay. Metcalf who last year was wide receiver. Ten he had eighty three catches for thirteen hundred and three yards and ten touchdowns but again jekyll and hyde season his first. Eight games eight touchdowns. His last eight games two touchdowns. I'm not concerned. Matthew i people have theorized as to what happened last year in the second half of last season changing of philosophy opponents weren't necessarily vat dramatically different. I mean you're. I thought it was like they were playing teams. That were pretty good in the first half playing to pretty good in the second half to but like early russell. Wilson played porn second half of last year. Think that's fair. And i also think that in the second half of the season last year there were a number just because i remember i. Id k metcalf in the war room league and one of the reasons why we. I think we fourteen last year but like he had a couple of tough games against jalen ramsey. A tough couple. Tough games against patrick peterson like he just. He suddenly got locked up a few times by true shutdown corners like he had some to some really tough match ups over the second half of the year. But none of that concerns. You know what i'm turning. Why grabble answer. why why. Why eight touchdowns and then two touchdowns and that's what happened. This is that the production fell off a little bit. But you know in like there. Was that one game where like he. He caught a touchdown pass and ran the whole distance. I wanna say it was a monday night or it was a national game. Remember they get called back due to penalty like he'd done. Nothing i want to say was i want to see. What was it jalen ramsey. It was either. The cardinals game are is member of the game where he caught buddha baker unbelievable which is also amazing but there was one where he had a long touchdown called back due to penalty which was sort of like this ticky tack holding penalty on the other side of the field. I remember that being drove me crazy. Anyway i lotta daycare. I had a lot of decay metcalf last year. So just would love areas zoned in wide receiver. One player that has as much touchdown upside is basically any wide receiver other than devante atoms. Because of his skill set down the field and also the fact that in the red zone he is a terror would like to see a little bit more consistent volume. You did have eight games last year with four or fewer catches but i think that will increase year over year. He still by the way is only in his third. Nfl season right. Which is is the guy top three and ends targets. You know top eight in red zone target to your point like just like just an absolute beast in sometimes by the way when he gets a little reception. Don't need it because it's like it's like when you when you score on eighty yard touchdown play like for one twenty-one fine exactly yeah exactly. Let's tyler lockett though because tyler lockett is going to be drafted high matthew wide receiver twenty four on both your in my board. But he's going to be maddening he just will be. It's a fact every year. You look at last year's raw total thinking yourself. Wow one hundred receptions for one thousand fifty four yards and ten touchdowns now. I hate when we do this. Because i'm guilty of but i'm gonna do it right now when you take away a player's best game. How would the season look if you take away. That one game last year or tyler. Lock fifteen catches for two hundred and fifteen yards in two touchdowns over fifteen remaining games. He had eighty five catches for eight hundred. Thirty nine yards and eight touchdowns that obviously. He's a really incredible player. But we also know that from weeks. Twelve to sixteen last year weeks twelve through sixteen very important portions of the fantasy season in five games. Twenty one catches never more than sixty three receiving yards and zero touchdowns during that stretch over the course that he's going to be amazing but we had multiple years here from being a little bit up and down which is why i do not have them inside. My top twenty wide receivers. Even though if i had the opportunity to bet. I would bet that he will finish the one of the top twenty scoring fancy out this year. Yeah exactly. I mean he. This is i think this is something that brought up my dre manifesto available now on. Espn dot com for free..

"No purchases necessary void where prohibited. It's open residents of the united states. Eighteen and older people probably know this and you say be a like not b. e. a. b. alec letters b. Hey right body armor body. Tell ya i have to tell you my kid my seventeen year old son who is turning I'm sorry my sixteen year old's hundred hundred seventeen on thursday. Ooh yeah is Drinks drinks drinks nothing but body armor he is jacked accordingly. Yeah that is aware of sleep at that could seventeen. I mean like but autumn aware. I gotta can. I tell you just a real quick story last night. Mainly my girlfriend's son came downstairs and he had already had two of the body armor waters and he came down to get another one in. Rosie was like you've already had tuna today. Drink peasant water. You can have two more tomorrow because he was just going through it too because he loves tastes so freaking good so wow has it hurting peasant water. You're drinking out of bottles of peasant water we do. We don't know we don't have a lot of water but sounds like you. I need to go stock up his peasants. We always body armor. That's what i need to do. Exactly it's one of the two. Let's keep it rolling here with the seahawks. Chris carson finished last year's rb eleven fifteen point seven points per game however just twelve games played. I'm gonna turn justifying here for second because to find him. This is a player who is really talented. Just finished his fourth. Nfl seasons re signed a two year contract with the seahawks feels like he's banged up a lot. Though and in some cases it leaves him no worse for the wear he's still produces but his physical running style does seem to be something that invite contact fair yes. I think those are the running backs that we look for right and he's super productive when he's on the field. I don't think he's missed his much time. We've talked about this with him before. For some reason there's a perception around him at the end of the season a couple of years and he and it was a big injury but at the very end of the season he came back and he was absolutely find. Remember coming into that year a lot of people are like well we know in the seahawks just sort of the way they utilize their running backs contributed to that somewhat right because they were almost seemed like they were deciding who is going to be the starter and they had a penny and then there were injuries there and so it was never really clear who they were relying on and it felt like it was too much focus on chris carson when he had the injury so Yeah he did miss a few games last year but he also had an incident where he got hit and rolled up on him. We thought it was going to be much worse than it was and the bouncing back from that so i think chris carson for the position that he plays in the style that he plays actually shown himself to be pretty durable. He's a very very talented player. As well the guy an absolutely i mean he's just he's a tone setting runaways described him as the kind of guy that you're playing defense against against chris carson and you wish that you were not a professional football player on that day but let's get to his value out there i know you love. Chris carson always felt like. He's a little bit underrated and underappreciated and fantasy. You've got him at running back thirteen at seventeen. Same place as daniel so against hairs here. We're not down on chris carson. However all listen his running his. Adp is running back. Nineteen he does on espn like he gets so disrespected. So we're all higher consensus then then on chris carson. I'm just really high on him like again. I am at running back. Thirteen going as running back. Nineteen years they love for me. He's always love for me. he always makes me look good. He is money in the bank when he's on the field like he is productive. I think the questions about. Chris carson the questions about chris carson. Are this kenny. Stay healthy and is he the guy because it felt like for a while layer they use the first round pick on rishaad penny and you know and he didn't come. Chris carson did not come into the nfl with a pedigree the way some running backs too. I believe it was a seventh round. Pick out of oklahoma state so she doesn't have the pedigree. I'm actually really proud of you. Matthew yeah so me too by the way. That was an upset. But here's what i will tell you. Chris carson runs hard with authority. And i think he's answered those questions. You just heard to find your talk about the fact that in terms of like i think he is. He gets more of an injury prone tag than he actually is. Played forty one games over the last three years which is the same as like you know it's more than donald cook. Saquon barkley christian mccaffrey. Some of those are they mr for years but like right. I'm just saying like he's played one game in aaron jones all these guys are drafted way ahead of him that that no one has any injury concerns at all and he's played as many games as the last three years as they have and so i get that he gets banged up a little bit. He runs to contact and he has a hard charging style but he got paid this off season. Yeah so. I think that answers. The question of is he the guy. And as we talked with russell wilson. I think the seahawks are going to be one of those offenses that we're talking about a year from now. That took the next step in his really really explosive and so the other positive of chris carson is his passing game. Usage keeps improving his receptions per game have improved every single part of his career early in his career he was just a first and second down thumper he's now a big part of third down as well i think he will continue to be not the full third down back they have some other guys like dj dowell etc. But i do right drive home but like he's he gets enough pass catching to make them viable again. I'm at running back to thirteen. I'm a big believer in the sea. Hawks offense this year for so for a guy who finished his drive for them. He gets all their goal. I work for a guy that is a good pass. Catcher like you said for a guy that is a good talented runner. The reason why. I'm a little bit lower on him relative to other running backs we're talking about that skill set. Is that whether by design or by coincidence he just not frequently have workhorse games. He had zero games last year with twenty carries zero. So not a one. I think he had. I wanna say it was like one game with more than seventy five rushing yards all of last season so super efficient when he gets opportunities just not getting quite the.

"We're gonna get to the future super bowl champions in just a few minutes that being of course to finance forty niners but we begin in seattle. Where a tale of two seasons took place in twenty twenty russell. Wilson was quarterback six on a points per game basis last year for at one point of the year. It felt like he was going to be quarterback one with like eight thirty point gap between the next quarterback and him russell wilson last year started off the season with five five and four touchdown passes in his first three games whose ridiculous. He was incredibly hot. Everybody knows the staff that counts touchdown. Passing through. Daniel dopp right. His career highlight like for guidance. Accomplished a lot on and off the field throwing a pass daniel. His career highlight touchdown. Pass it. this is amazing though. I great russell. Wilson was and is by the way. This offense fell off a cliff in a way that i can't recall an offense playing at the level that it was falling off that precipitously in the course of season over the last eight games. Make nine if you include the playoffs russell. Wilson did not have a single game with more than two hundred and fifty passing arts. Not one brussels could do that and a half. He's that good with that kind of weapons. We've never seen anything like what we saw from them last year. That being said matthew. From fantasy standpoint like russell wilson is what he is right like. The ceiling is literally quarterback one but the floor is like quarterback. I dunno seven. and i. yeah i mean. That's what's exciting to me so russell. Somebody my love list. I'm a qb five. I was a top five minutes quarterback. Here i'm higher than consensus. He's he's going around. Qb his he's going his qb seven. He's going later in the overall than i would take him as well. I think the seahawks are one of those offenses that could explode this year. Understand that new offense coordinator shane waldron. Who came over from the rams who part of the sean mcvay coaching staff. He's not going to be calling the plays for seattle. obviously pete carroll always loves to run the ball and but you know for all the let russ cooked jokes. I do think this is an offense that takes another step forward this year. And you saw the potential of russell wilson to your point in the first eight games last year when he was just all world so my expectation ears is that given both the fact that he's a high floor and high ceiling player. I prefer him. I have him at five. And honestly i would not be if you took him anywhere in the three on. I'd be you know what i mean. I think it's mahomes and josh allen but anywhere after those two guys. If you took russell wilson i i totally get it just by the way. Five hundred thirteen rushing yards last year so hopefully that continues offices most since two thousand seventeen. That's a piece of it but another year with decay. Metcalf who you know really exploded last year. Obviously tyler lockett get paid in the offseason. They add gerald everett. I think is going to be an underrated piece for this team. Yeah we're gonna talk about him in a second but just all in on russell's this year again he was a love for me. I am higher than him on consensus. It's amazing me that going. Qb seven safe safe safe when it comes to russell wilson in fantasy football. The backs matthew word to get a little bit more interesting. Actually you know what we'll do that in.

"I i don't think i'm just gonna wait and see on him to everything i saw was like all right. You see some of the traits. You see the speed of physicality instincts. I think the game slowed down for a bit late in the year. Remember it was the rams game in week. Sixteen they put rams in week. Sixteen right they put them twice in a three week. Span and on the goal line sequence jordan brooks had like three tackles four play span now is kind of his signature moment and so he definitely gave you those like all right. This is what what they saw in him. And why they view him as their their future at linebacker But it doesn't totally. Does it in a full time capacity. Just you can't bank on that you can't say well you know he got jordan. They're good Again in early. You've got to take that risk right. You've got to commit to it and find out whether or not what you've done has worked. You have to absolutely or otherwise. You're just you're you're paying money to to essentially duplicate what you've already spent catches what they've done with. Quandary digs. which is why you can't afford to go. Try the julio jones thing or some of these other kind of cockamamie idea. I just tell me about the about this year's for first pick and there's not a first round pick but what did you see from s courage. Yeah i think he of the guys there. He was the one that really stood out. You never want to take away too much of an hour. Long practice with they're going. I don't know seventy percent speed. There's no one on one but but the wearing bridge was fast. And he's he's a big like you see the sizes. What like five ten but like five nine. But like he's a built dude and pete regularly instead of mentioning the the speed mentioned the physicality. I mean this is kind of guy who seems to be shaping up for a role kind of like what deebo samuel is entitled..

"They need to invest in this product. So that it gets over the top and one other piece of advice for them. Don't get greedy. Get good first before you get greedy. Get good and i'm going to bring up a story that popped up and there's another one kind of like the video jones thing where i was like non-real nothing to that. And that's this idea of trading taylor tra mel right now got morosi was floating idea as the mariners must be. Don't trade taylor terminal. That is a terrible idea. Especially if your reasoning is you have too many outfielders. Like who jack mayfield. Donovan walton. Who both get starts for you in the outfield and the last week we talking about of too many outfielders none of these guys are guaranteed celtics hitting one eighteen julio's in single a. Kyle lewis just got hurt again. Mitch anchors constantly hurt. We're talking about your consistently playing dylan. More sam haggerty and dawn wooten who a shortstop in the outfield. But you're going to start trading your outfielders because you've got a glut stop at stop right off hair. No your not get good before you get greedy. Then get greedy. I want you to be greedy eventually but make sure these guys are good. I the whole idea of having a lot of prospects is you don't know which ones are going to work out. That's why you've got emerson. Hancock and jordan herbie and logan gilbert and isaiah campbell. And and and you like all those guys are going to be great. They're not they're not some of them will turn into being okay. One of them will blow out his arm and never be anything like. That's what happens so don't get greedy. Get good then. Get greedy and hold off on taylor terminal unless you think he's bad unless there's something and i don't think that's the case i don't believe they think he's bad by all accounts is a great kid he he. He surprised them by even being in the majors to begin the year. He's now where he's supposed to be in aaa this where he's supposed to be this year. But if you think i'm battling better at aaa than he could ever hope to play a major league then you strike. While they aren't taught get some values can get more than he's worth fine but the and that's a perfectly good reason to do it but the idea that you need to drum up market so that you can get rid of your one of too many outfielders. While you're playing infielders in the outfield you might shake frailties back. Oh about jake. Further made a hell of catch today by the way. No no thank you. No thank you on trading taylor. You've got too many off. Can we throw the curveball. In this though what if that tweet that whole conjecture was less about taylor hermel and where he fits and more about the crowded outfields and when it comes to that. Who's the one player that this thing is always sort of turned on the one question mark. We haven't been able to answer. It's mitch haniger. Where is his future. A by all accounts without even rumors involved a team would want to extend mitch berger and probably would have wanted to for years and yet it hasn't happened And here we are entering his final arbitration your next year. Then he walks for free after twenty twenty two which is probably next year. Maybe you're playoff. You're maybe but certainly in two years right if you don't know for sure that he's going to be on your team in two years. Now is the time you make a decision. You have forty. Five days to make a decision about mitch haniger. Whether he's gonna be on your agree with all that you're going to walk me. Maybe i'm slow. Walk me through the end of.

"Happy to fix that. I hope we don't have to get to that point. I want no part of being a doughty fixing jerry county. But i don't know it. Just kind of dawned on me that like when he comes up in those big moments i can handle the fact that he's numbers are terrible. He's a kid and figuring it out and this may take a little while and he's hit the ball hard and been somewhat unlucky. Like i'm willing to kind of understand all i'm not happy that he's hitting one eighteen living. He's gonna fix that in the leadoff spot. No not a fan of the whole lead on last night. Bottom of the ninth inning. Right one out runner at second base. Perfect for strikeout looking. I know and it was against use mira petite right like i mean it was like a totally gettable situation for him. And you know it's funny. I watched that whole about. I don't want to know it's a podcast. We can get as deep as we want but the sixth pitcher of that was a great foul ball. I know that sounds silly. But like there's a ball right on the outside pitcher in slow motion through in. Throw the ball right dave sims about to lose their mind broadcasts. He was well. It was a great foul. And i know that sounds sort of silly. But that's one of those marks of veterans and really good hitters is that they know how to spoil pitches spoil pitches support. And he did that and was really giving me like oh man. I literally said to myself if he delivers here. I can't wait to go back and talk about the six pitch of the at bat where he had a foul ball because it was one of those ones that keeps in a bad going extended. It's important to be able to do that. Is a great hitter and then unfortunately i mean it's sort of tough. Strike was a tough pay petite a good pitch striking about. What are you gonna do. But that should be the lefty happy's zone and you're just like oh pull the trigger man and i'm sure he's a little again. He's never failed before. So he's a little betwixt and between. He's never seen this happen. This is sort of what we said all along right. Which is we want this guy to be able to to fail a little bit. So that he doesn't have to experience it in front of the world at the major league level both experiencing it how he handles this how he gets coach through it is is incredibly incredibly important to what his future so that. We're not sitting here waiting for how to fix them right. I i would. I would drop them down and give them the opportunity. Maybe they believe the ego is so fragile that would actually hurt him worse. And that maybe you just keep him where he is saying. Hey we believe in you. The results don't matter yet. we care about the process. He is hitting the ball hard at times and for now you try to let him work his way through it. This is too much to me like a lot of the conversations. We had around evan white last year. he's hitting the ball hard. It's his batting average on balls in play. he's just been unlucky. Don't worry about the strikeouts. Look at how hard he's hit the ball and at some point this will turn and we saw this last week celtics. The unluckiest battery in baseball keeps hitting the ball hard. But it's right at guys had bought that last year and it burned me well and you'd like to see a few more home runs because the nice thing about those is. It doesn't matter where they position the players it it goes over their heads and enthusiasts. And it's a home run. Yeah i i agree with that. I know it sounds stupid. And like i'm sort of grasping at at silver linings here but the fact that is on base percentage is essentially double. His batting average is a good thing. That's something that you should take out. It's like despite the fact that he's hitting one eighteen he's got an on base percentage of to forty rough walked twice last night in a rough game. I mean like he he. He's finding a way he's not being stupid. So seeing pitches has right up there swinging and flail. There's some value. I think what he's very and there's a lot of reasons to be incredibly hopeful again. He's twenty one years old and anybody who seems to know anything about the game takes a look at him like he's gonna be fine. Yeah he led. The team pitches seen yesterday the entire. Ross now we say some of the things about dustin ackley too so again like you don't know which way it's going to go but everybody who's gotten is on giving find so. I believe that it's only been a few games. Here's what seventy seventeen games or so and we've seen plenty plenty of great players struggle and especially at age twenty one. It's not like he's been in the minors for ten years like you know. He's he's barely spent even any time in the minor. So i am. I am zero worried. I mean that. I would also feel better if he would just deliver in those clutch moments because there is. That's how legend gross and a part of the whole idea of jared. Kalmyk is the legend that is associated with him. and what. it's what what he could turn into. I think that's part of what we want. So i will admit to being a little bummed that he didn't granted they came back. They won the game totally shocked by the way. If you were watching that game on memorial day blown away by the fact that there was a man on second base you and be both dude. I hate i hate it. I hate it i hate it. It is now i have a for for which is better later but it's might least favorable in sports. It's even harder when you're not watching the game. I was listening to the game. Like and here comes the for what rugged writer what who i. Maybe we saw michael old man just like can handle a little bit a change but like i'll continue to say the same thing i've said since they introduced this rule who watches a three and a half hour baseball game gets to the tenth inning in his then board. It just it's impossible. Are we got to move this thing along now right now. That the games on the line. Let's go tied in the tenth. Who's like i. We gotta get outta here if you wanna put a runner on second base to start in ending do it in the fifth. Feel free to do it for the person who's like. Yeah got an hour and a half in me and now i'm getting bored. Okay inject something into the game. Yeah they're on a happy ending. Honestly that would bother me. Let's tricked out silly. You want to start her out. Okay we're gonna put a brand second basically starter fine. Put them there. The tenth inning. The game is now like it's gotten great. It's all the pressure all the drama. And instead you're gonna trick it out with some guy at second base. What's anyway i completely forgot. He was there the they drive. It was like to give ruins. What it legitimately wasn't until the mariners came up in the bottom of the tenth. And the tea's like jack mayfield will start at second why. Oh oh. that's what happened so yeah got it. That's why they gave and because when they gave up the run game. They're not going to score on. But the as didn't really deserve you don't even have to manufacturer. Just put a guy on second montana sac. Fly games title. It is a single by the way. Look credit to manny acta there Big hold on fran. Yeah sent the guy earlier on tony.
