confirming the suspected monkeypox infection and a local man who recently traveled to a country where other cases had been found no other reports of monkeypox here locally though The president and First Lady Jill Biden are set to head to ivaldi Texas on Sunday ABC's Andy field joining us from Washington D.C. with more on the bidens Second visit in two weeks Andy following mass shootings It is just beyond sad what they are going through with the citizens and you're going through and buffalo We've already forgotten about the buffalo I mean now we've moved on to the next horrendous tragedy And the debate continues the politicians are saying it's not well the Republican politicians are saying it's not the guns Democrats are calling for tougher gun controls Everyone's making a big show of saying we're going to try to do something I've been to this rodeo many times I don't foresee anything changing The president is not super involved at least not publicly in these negotiations on Capitol Hill The White House keeps saying that he's going to let both sides do the talking and see what they come up with but he's made it clear what he wants which is part of it what the house has already passed tougher background checks closing the loopholes So that if you go to a gun show or a private sale you still have to have a background check getting rid of the so called Charleston loophole the Charleston South Carolina shooting at a church that killed so many black parishioners there And the young man who did the shooting he was able to get through this loophole where he had three days to check the background if you get the gun Well there's a backlog that he never got around to checking that he probably shouldn't have gotten a gun and he ended up getting the gun and they're saying you know what No guns should be sold until the background check is complete no matter how long you have to wait Andy President Biden also wants to ban rapid fire rifles in large capacity ammunition Going to hit a wall with those Likely in the Senate yes because Republicans who get it in order to amount of money from the NRA which is having its convention Dexter's right now Just will not vote for these things because it would upset the people who are paying the bills to help get them reelected So that is not going I can not see that happening in the Senate unless there's some giant massive change of heart with ten Republicans in the Senate There are a few that are willing to go along with some of the background checks but you still need 60 votes in the Senate That means ten Republicans and there's only so far may be less than a handful who are saying yes Where does Mitch McConnell stand and doesn't he have the power to sway I guess the power to tell his group of Republican senators what he thinks but it hasn't changed things in the past especially even in some of these past negotiations where the debt ceiling was about to be crashed into in the U.S. was going to default even he said to his senators please don't do this He managed to convince barely enough senators to go along with it but they did begrudgingly When it comes to guns especially in election year their constituents the folks the Republican Party have a lot of folks who think that there should be no exceptions when it comes to the Second Amendment and they don't want to see new gun laws And just doesn't seem politically possible that they're going to change their minds when they're all up for reelection Are there any that you can see passing at all The only thing I can see right now is perhaps some expanded background checks to make sure that this is across the board in every state There are critics who say well gee you have tough gun laws in New York City in Chicago in Washington D.C. and there's still lots of gun violence What that ignores is the fact that some neighboring states don't have a stuff gun laws And it's not that hard to drive to the neighboring state launches today appeared to be of a short range ballistic missile Police arrest a man and teenage girl in connection with a carjacking in the university district earlier this week They are also suspected of attacking two women with a taser behind a sorority house President Biden yet to name his nominee to the Supreme Court but senators are already weighing in and Jeff pojo got the latest for amber Phillips at The Washington Post What have we heard from the senators so far That they're open to looking into who Biden will nominate Well I should say that's on the democratic side The Republican side we don't have someone for people to rally for or against yet although there's a very short list But you do hear Republicans try to talk about how they feel like President Biden has moved to the last on so many issues in the Democratic Party to progressive So therefore of course their Supreme Court pick will be to radicals the word this echoing around on the right And so they're really gearing up to oppose this which isn't any surprise Supreme Court battles these days that we've had a couple of them over the past couple of years have become part of the map It's almost like election But with the Republicans really expect anything less because no one could say Amy Coney Barrett was a moderate Right exactly You know the same with I think the other two picks that president Trump picked and Bret Kavanaugh especially had to really controversial circumstances and nomination in this Senate Republicans put on the court despite almost all Democrats injections So if you're simply right this is a case where when you're the minority party in the Senate you're locked out of power to filibuster the Supreme Court nominees They the Senate took its own powers away to do that a couple of years ago You cry about how unfair the process is how radical the nominee is and then when you're the party in power you can do what you want Nothing quite like hypocrisy when it comes to a Supreme Court confirmation vote have senators floated their own ideas that they want to see confirmed to the high court No they're really leaving this open to President Biden in part because you know their job under the constitution is to essentially confirm who the president picks and senators take that job really seriously But what they are saying is that there's some criteria they might want to see Senators kyrsten sinema is a senator from Arizona And she's had no problem fucking Democrats of course on some really big votes last just last week she quashed their helps for getting voting rights legislation through So he's not a given that all 50 Senate Democrats will support this pick and so she's someone you want to watch for and what she said recently was you know I want to provide advice and consent which is what the constitution asked senators to do And I want to look at whether they're professionally qualified they believe in the role of the independent judiciary and they can be trusted to briefly interpret and uphold the rule of law So it's really not specific what I hear cinema and other senators say But they're also not out there at least publicly floating names Privately they might be but not publicly What about the other thorn in The White House's side and that being Joe Manchin Right Joe Manson he's been kind of open to this He writes this on The White House aside he's sunk with the president filled it back better spending bill right before Christmas Indeed actually has been the lone Democrat to support a number of president Trump's Supreme Court nominees He told West Virginia's metro news it wouldn't bother him aside and Supreme Court pick is more liberal than he is He made a joke He goes it's not too hard to get more liberal than me So okay weeks and Mayfield Kentucky that community has so hard by the deadly tornado they are helping survivors cope with destroyed homes no power and missing friends and loved ones President Biden signing two bills into law today while many Senate Democrats are putting their hopes on hold when it comes to passage of the president's build back better act ABC's Andy field joining us on the Komodo line So Andy where are they putting that on the back burger Is it because they don't think it's going to pass by Chris One guy is forcing it The name's Joe Manchin is a democratic senator from West Virginia He has been the fly in the ointment on virtually everything that Joe Biden has tried to pass whether it's voting rights whether it's expanding education benefits for people with very young kids or people who want to go to community colleges but can't afford it And also now this child care tax credit which expired this week on Wednesday basically almost every parent in the country was getting up to $300 a month deposited in their bank account By the federal government to help them with child care if they had kids of the age of need the child care That's huge for middle and low income parents who can't afford to go to work because they can't afford to pay for child care and have someone take care of those children That has disappeared That little extra has now vanished and there's only one reason for that And his name is Joe Manchin because he doesn't want it and build back better He thinks that it's too expensive It's going to drive the deficit up The White House's response to that is no it will actually help curb inflation and make it easier for parents to go back to work which will help improve the economy And they point to a number of economists many of them Nobel Prize winners who are saying yes indeed that is the case in Joe Manchin does not correct So is this why Biden is pushing the Senate Democrats to pass two voting rights bills instead Because he thinks that has a shop before the end of the year Well it does not have a shot because it can't get past the 60 vote super majority you need to get end of filibuster here The reason that they were going to be able to pass build back better is because it's a spending bill and there's some hocus pocus that the party in power if they have the majority in the Democrats do by literally one vote that if all the Democrats agree then they can do it through reconciliation as long as it only includes spending The voting rights bill is not a spending bill It is a law that would help protect minority rights in many states where Republicans are now passing laws that will make it tougher to cast absentee ballots to find places to put those ballots The times that you can go and vote But the president did sign into law today the two and a half $1 trillion increase to avert a government default We would call that doing what you're supposed to do which is basically the government has never defaulted on its loans And of course Republicans painted this as a picture of well we didn't vote for this year to increase the debt ceiling so that we wouldn't default on the loans we've already made They're saying well it's to stop Democrats from spending more money So we're not going to vote for it But that's not what raising the debt ceiling does Raising the debt ceiling does is you already racked up all these bills on your credit card You've got to pay the interest on it And if you don't you default and you go into bankruptcy and you can't have the federal government going to bankruptcy The vast majority of that money was spent in the last four years and all that debt was accrued not all of it but a vast majority of it was accrued under Republican House and Senate control and Donald Trump This is when and let's talk a little bit too because a lot of this area that ended up being tied with it was called pacific highway south so at that time you the. I had a little bit of detail here. At that time. The population of king county was about one point seven or one point three million today doubts about point six million so it's basically doubled in size. It's twenty three hundred seven square miles. This is a huge county and inside of that you have. Phs pacific highway south that kind of becomes the area known for again. We're using terms of art back in the day. It's it's an area known for prostitution so kind of lay out the scope of king county. Because what i want to get into then is then after. Tell us about that. And then i want to start getting into now. Some of the difficulties involving the press and surveillance. But let's let's let people know for sure. Tell us about pacific highway south. Why that was such an area for prostitution and why that became so important for this case later on your we. So that whole area was called the strip and Civic highway south from seattle for south seattle all the way to almost north dakota federal way and local. Excuse me local people will know federal way but just to make it so it sort of associates with some who are familiar with the geography here. Pacific highway south actually runs down the whole coast. All the way down through california but but there you were talking about pacific highway south from south seattle to north dakota and it's called this trip and especially focused on the area in front of the seatac airport so back in those days people flying in and out of seatac hotels and low income. I should say dive motels where you can rent to motel room for four hours and everybody knew why you're renting a room for four hours. Dr just was really blessed to be moving through my career in a way that put me in a place to to end up being the sheriff and king county when i finally retired. Let's work through that story to get to that point so you started off. You apply in seventy one. You started work in seventy two and obviously now it in king county. I know it changed later. King county at that time. The sheriff elected sheriff a couple years before year. Before because the sheriff in king county and the sheriff of pierce county the county just next to king just south of king county which is the city of tacoma people. That's because the smokes been so thick there lately it's hampered some of their firefighting efforts from the air. Meanwhile we are monitoring the air quality here this morning. Smoke from those surrounding wildfires finally drifted into western washington. But it's hanging out in the upper atmosphere so it's not really affecting the actual air quality right now. It is listed as good in the puget sound region and meteorologist mattie christel at the national weather service in seattle says. Things are likely to stay that way. A lot of people maybe have the image of their minds of you know what happened.
