"Our thanks Lynn owed for their support of this show and all of relay FM. Well we've got another piece of good news in that. We've we've got the closing of a chapter of a really ugly book the really ugly book where you hold on. I gotTA rewind on that. I'm sorry I did exactly what I wasn't supposed to do which is call out. Somebody's appearance but this person isn't ugly per se. So we're I think I think you're referring to his sole E. Yeah exactly. He did ugly things from his mind. And if you think that we're about to bring James Damore or yourself fifty points Sabbath tomorrow. I'm sorry there's actually a bunch of poems going on or about him in this using like that's Maure but he's basically talking about what a terrible anyway. Yes so I'm I'm sorry to remind people if you don't if that name doesn't ring a Bell. He is the Alt-right former Google who was a WHO sued After a really really ridiculous series of events he decided that The rest of his his fellow employees at Google were not wise enough not as wise as he to understand The real problem of retaining women in the engineering workforce at Google and so are the goodness of his tiny tiny little black heart He wrote a ten page memo and distributed on Google's internal message board explaining that see their innate differences physical differences mental differences psychological differences between genders that make women inferior engineers. And well what you. He was fired for violating company policy against harmful gender stereotypes and because we are living in a health scape fee became a cost. Celeb- for the outright community about you see this is exactly how white people are being persecuted against by politics hand by education and by the media when someone going to stand up for the rights of the white people at last so files lawsuits and because it was a labor really. He basically said that he was being. He was fired for being white There were other details but basically that was at goodwill is prejudice against conservative white people And because it was a labor related suit The government had to get involved in National Label Labor Labor Relations. Board weighed in and said that. Yeah you make comments about gender stereotypes that were bound to cause disruption. Google said outright that they fired you because you had made comments about gender stereotypes of causes Russia therefore yeah this was a legit hit and so the this went in to go into arbitration because they were not going to get any traction An irregular lawsuit and so finally this week he and his lawyers decided to To drop the suit with the consent of Google and so that has been put into into the wheels One one last interesting thing I I did take a little look. See lookie loo at his Lincoln and he's still the finds himself as the his headline next to his. Avatar is quote senior software engineer at Google Unquote. Even though he was fired two years ago his most recent position is quote software engineer startup for the past two years without any names or details. This startup is in his room. That's what it is. It's him on his computer in his room. Trying to like he's going to go back and has next Glory Day. He was probably planning on winning. Whatever the lawsuit was and taking that money to start up. Whatever it is that he thinks he's working on. I know how these people work their book deal. They're all they're all tropes of Silicon Valley. That's exactly what this guy is by the way I was similarly a sending Andy a bunch of interesting tidbits about his lawyer. Harmeet Dylan now. Some fun facts about Miss Dylan. She is an American lawyer and Republican Party official. She's the former vice chairwoman of the California Republican Party and the National Committee Woman of the Republican National Committee for California. He's based in San Francisco California in Sea Ranch California she. She recently decided that she would file suit against the State of California challenging. It's stay home order which was enacted because of the pandemic. There were all currently going through. She is suing the state of California. Saying it is unconstitutional. That people are told to stay home so I just want to put that into perspective of who it is that has come to fight alongside these bigoted hateful people. This woman comes from a background of bigotry and hate and it seems that she likes to stand up wherever she possibly can next to the person who is also fighting for that time. Just it's very tiring. It's very tiring. And there's so we apologize for reviving this ugliness. That's best left buried about. It does really to another piece of news a CNBC had a really big story of the same day. A Wednesday I think About how Current and ex employees were alleging title the story current and ex employees alleged. Google drastically rolled back diversity and inclusion programs after a conservative backlash on. I'm sorry I've I've sort of blurred the headline with my own comments. You're basically it's They had some. Cnbc found some people inside. Google present and former WHO Say that The after Breitbart and others hooked onto James Damore and try to turn them into their own version of Joe. The plumber and again tried to inflate him as a as an icon as a pioneer as their Rosa Parks of white. Victimhood they They the the allegation being made here by in the story is that Google decided that they don't want any part of that that they don't want to get that kind of a bad attention particularly considering how plugged in senior White House. Officials are to the rhetoric of Super Super Super alt-right super hyper conservative Outlets and commentators and so that company the the allegation is that Google's either roll back divers. The diversity inclusion programs are in place or heavily modified them. I'm going to quote here from the story quote since two thousand eighteen internal diversity and inclusion training programs have been scaled back or cut entirely four Google employees and to people who recently left the company told NBC News and interviews. In addition. They said the team responsible for those programs has been reduced in size and positions previously held by fulltime employees have an outsourced or not refilled after members of the diversity. Teams left the company And they had a couple of examples here one of them is that A Comprehensive Social Justice Awareness Program that will develop for internal use called sojourn and their sources. Say this very very well liked And Again quoting the article. One of the major motivations for cut in this program was cut and eliminated and one of the major motivations quote for cutting sojourn was that the company doesn't want to be seen as anti-conservative Google employee familiar with the company's diversity program said in an interview quote it does not want to invite lawsuits or claims by right wing white employees about Google. Discriminating discriminating against them. Google did respond to some of the claims in this article. They said they did and sojourn but only because they this was this is really hard to parse and I had really try to find other people to talk to about this They said they ended the sojourn program. Because it was focused on United States racial issues and thus was not scalable worldwide. Now sorry and I'm sure you see now. I I think you and most other people listening here have latched onto the same problem that I initially caused me to trip up on this that the united the United States racial problems are unique to the United States that we have A. We have a history that taught us all about colonization. You can't I mean I don't I don't even know what given especially given the Google is United States based company that most of their employees are basically the United States that having a program in place that is specifically tailored for this culture in this environment is not useful They have Instead outsource this to To accompany that that has also done similar projects for IBM and for Microsoft. So it's not as though there is not as though they're totally Totally passing passing the hat on this one however there defending this by saying that look there. We Are Technology Company. We are in over our heads when it comes to providing a system for employees education and support visit. Why were hiring these outside consultants who do nothing but focus on this day and they do They do have a point there But the the other quotes from this article are very very Very very pointed of one employee says quote one hundred hundred black employees could testify to pain. They feel in a climate that's inadvertently hostile towards them and management will go back and say quote. I need to go I need to get more data unquote and then three angry white men complained and everything comes to a halt That's the also say that of driven by the fear of being targeted by conservative groups Include that they stop using the word diversity When discussing initiatives and just simply say dear I sending for diversity and inclusion And and their employees were said. Don't don't say diversity because if you say diversity for these programs it could expose the company to Liability. So it's it's difficult and the other thing. I'm sorry this note of the very very end. It's the company called Ibis. And it's providing these these services to Intel and Microsoft not IBM and Microsoft but still they are pretty. They seem to be pretty well. Respected from what I was able to determine last night and today so okay that kind of works but the thing is that the new programs that are being put in place. Employees are saying that it doesn't do enough to educate on white privilege and it seems focused instead on teaching black employees how to navigate a predominantly white and Asian workplace. So it's like no. No here's how you guys can get along with the majority and it's it seems like a huge mess and this is yet another this is yet another spoil custard pie did did white people put it together because if it's white people putting it together and nothing is ever going to go move forward. I mean I have no idea I well. I'm just speaking rhetoric a rhetorically but just to also say that again another like Silicon Valley thing is and we've seen it and we've seen it in movies. We've we've seen it in our own lives as somebody gets hired to try and fix the problem and usually it exacerbates it and it starts to show like. We're all the holes really are. This is unsurprising. I think that One Opinion that I read around the Damore Anything. Damore whatever over the hell you say his name. I don't care One of the opinion surrounding that was that the reason that Google did anything about it was not in solidarity with its workers but rather because this issue was causing it was causing a lot of disruption among productivity because generally in the society that we live in productivity is the is the means by which we it's the currency by which we judge. You know the effectiveness of things and there's no productivity. It means that something has gone awry and so I think that this is another part of that in the sense that well. We're spending so much time on this. It's clearly not really doing anything. We have to constantly backtrack on so. It's better that we just don't do anything. I think. What's also interesting and mental link you this but I also saw on twitter today when I was quickly popping in the Google had posted a blog post about it's women tech makers and there's been a lot of like social media push for that Now of disclosure and part of the women tech makers And I've I I enjoy the group. I have enjoyed all the people I've met the group. It's it's a great community and it I don't want to take away from those actual efforts headed up by people who really like are trying to do good within the company that they work in. I don't WanNa look pass. Those people's efforts So it's really hard to talk about this and say it is like Google's doing this Google's during this because really it's just there's management that has decided that this would be the best thing for overall employee productivity and that sucks because a lot of people who work for. Google are now going to be like. Well this doesn't align with my values and when you start to come across that as an employee..

"Ghost crabs us aren't ghosts but they are ghost like partly because of their Pale coloring and partly because like a vengeful spirit trapped in your walk in closet they they want you to get out. They can't whale like actual ghosts but but when scientists studied the way that goes crabs communicate when threatened they did hear something surprising. Professor Maya degrees was part of the team at the Scripps Institution of oceanography that discovered the ghost crabs secret Britt noisy weapon. We reached her in Sea Ranch California professor degrees. What did you uncover about. These unusual sounds that the ghost crabs make right so it was really interesting in the lab. We noticed that they were making the same sounds with another. They're part of their body than their claws and a lot of crustaceans. Make these really neat. Strangulation sounds or grinding sounds that are really important for their behavior h-have yer but we heard it coming from another part of the body which was very intriguing before we find out what part of the body's doing let's hear a bit of the sound that you have recorded a growling crabs okay. That's the sound Dallas would that is great so it sounds like a scraping sound as you could tell when a two body parts scraped together and what we found is that it was actually coming from the stomach so what the animals have is a gastric mill which is basically thickly what they use to grind food in their stomachs. It's a set of teeth basically in the stomach and they can chew up food that way but we learned that they can also also make these sounds that sounds strikingly similar to the sounds that they make with their claws. Do all crabs have these grinding mills in their guts. Yes all crustaceans nations that we know of these gastric males or yeah grinding apparatus says it's pretty crazy but did you know of any that actually used the grinding mill to nor to make a sound. That's nothing to do with digesting food. nope this is the first example of really any animal making sounds communication with their stomachs. As far as we know when he first identified this sounds you could see that they weren't doing it with their claws. What did you think was going on yeah. It was really neat. The lead author of the Study Jennifer Taylor had actually brought out these animals into the lab for another study she was going to look at how they behave antagonistically to each other but then she noticed that they were making in kind of classic sound not with their claws and she got very curious and kind of brought the rest of the team to kind of figure out where the sound is coming from what what did you do in order to figure it out. I we used a laser doppler vibe Rahmatullah which is basically vibration sensing lasers to able to pinpoint where in the body the sounds coming from so that told us that the sound was coming from the body cavity probably this gastric mill but we need his see the gastric mill actually moving at the same time that the sound was being produced and that's actually really tricky to jail in bigger crowds. You can stick like an endoscope down L. Nancy the gastric mill moving but these are really small crabs kind of the size of your hand and when they make the sound they're moving around a lot so it's pretty hard to do so we actually teamed up with a group of medical doctors at Uc San Diego Medical Center and we use their radiology technology so basically weekly x Ray imaging to be able to make movies of the animals making the sound while they were moving their gastric. Mill says anyone x ray to grab before as far as you know you know not in this way certainly not with late human technology and medical technology so this is definitely the first time that they had stopped crafts into this machine before but it worked and it was really exciting they make this sound in order to when they're threatened when they're trying to ward off attacks or they're trying to antagonize agonize another another species so what what did you do in order to get them to make the sound they actually do it when they're in tag amazing other individuals from the same they're same species usually and so we actually able to use bodies of dead crabs of the same species and we actually even also so put live crabs in with them but really be able to monitor where they were going and kind of guide the animals were going to be doing these behaviors. Here's we used robotic expert toys and their remote controlled toys and so we were able to remotely control the antagonizing toy to be able to get the crabs to make the sound okay. I'm trying to picture Hugh and the hospital where the crab in X. Machine device and you are dangling dead crabs and heck's bug robots. I mean if if anyone had put their head in the door they would've thought this was really quite extraordinary and that's actually exactly what we were doing and it looked pretty pretty funny. We also of course had all of our like x Ray Protective Equipment on yeah. It was a pretty it was pretty wild scene. What does it mean for you to find to figure this out. This is really amazing zing because again this sound for us. Christine Biologists is so common we hear the crabs making the situation sound with their claws all the time but to hear it when their claws aren't moving was just totally wild. I was pretty blown away room. So now you've found out their stomachs can communicate MHM gets that they're communicating with their stomachs. This means that this behavior that is so important for them for defending territory and fighting with other crab this actually frees up their claws for them to still be able to make the sound with a different part of their body but then they can use their claws doing other things like fighting crabs. Perhaps and that kind of thing would fierce creatures. These are yeah. It's really neat and we actually think because so many Christians have this gastric mill. It's a highly possible that there are a lot of other animals that are doing this and we just haven't discovered it yet. Need Further Terese thank you. Yes thank you so much for by the High Professor Maya degrees a post doc fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the CO author of a new study crab communication.
