"Battling lymphoma from which he's currently in remission and contracting COVID-19. But during that same prolonged period, he filmed a new 7 episode miniseries called the old man, which premieres tomorrow on FX and begins streaming on Hulu on Friday. Bridges 72 plays a former CIA operative who resurfaces after decades off the grid. The old man costars John Lithgow and Amy Brenneman. Our TV critic David B and Cooley has this review. Jeff Bridges began his acting career on television in the 1950s as a young boy playing occasional guest roles on sea hunt, the series starring his dad, Lloyd Bridges. But once he came into his own in the 70s, the younger bridges set out on a long and stellar film career. He's logged triumphant roles in virtually every decade since, from the last picture show and the fabulous baker boys to the big lebowski and the Coen brothers remake of true grit. His most recent film, bad times at the el Royale, was four years ago. But now, after some health issues and a production schedule delayed by the pandemic, Jeff Bridges marks his return in a strong role in yet another new decade. And this time, it's on television, where he began. As the star of a new FX miniseries called the old man. Based on the novel by Thomas Perry, the old man is adapted for television by Jonathan E Steinberg and Robert Levine. The first two episodes are directed by John watts, director of Spider-Man, no way home. I've seen the first four of 7, and they've really pulled me in. The mood and feel of the old man is like a more modern tinker tailor soldier spy. Everyone has very complicated relationships with each other. Few people can be trusted completely, and almost no one is who they appear to be. The drama starts out at a deliberately slow pace. Jeff Bridges plays Dan chase, a widower living in a remote patch of New England with two dogs. Early on, while he is exercising his dogs outside and heading back into the kitchen for breakfast, he gets a concerned phone call from his daughter, Emily. You.

Sandy says she will give him the best testimonial but also gives mike. Another big kiss to which mike replies that is the best testimonial in my life. I'm not exactly sure where this episode was filmed for the top side scenes but it sure does look like hawaii however you never know when it comes to television or the movies. The part of sandy was played by nobu mccarthy and kendrick played lieutenant dave calcutta and here's one final interesting tidbit. This episode was remade in the nineteen eighty-seven version of sea hunt and it was titled pearl beds. And just so you know. I'm still trying to get my hands on that. The scene now shifts to the beach on sandy's island where both sandy and mike are gearing up to assure dive out to the pearl beds. Sandy shows mike the pearl beds in his getting angry underwater as she finds the broken oyster shells as they are walking out of the water. Mike tell sandy that it is the perfect place for scuba. Hit and run. Sandy tells mike that some of the pros have been growing for thirty years. Mike her exactly how they cultivate the pearls. Sandy says that it's a secret that came with her father from japan but since they won't but since she won't tell them the secret should make it up to them with the best dinner he ever had now. The next morning mike is ready to set a trap for the pro robbers. He's hiding in the rocks with a pair of binoculars in his full scuba rig looking for any suspicious activity. He spots a boat but he doesn't see the divers go into the water on the other side of the boat. He does however see their bubbles and heads out with his camera to catch them in the act at the pro beds. Mike hides behind a rock with the cameras. The divers approach as they start to rob the beds. Mike starts to film but he gets careless. He says the sound of the camera alerts. The divers wanted a bad guy circles around in surprises. Mike they get into a fight. The other bad guy grabs the camera and pulls out the film now while the underwater fight is going on. Sandy was watching from the beach and she suspects trouble and his racing to the pro beds with her boat. The bad guys rip mics regulator out of his mouth but as they are scared off by the sound of sandy's boat. Mike is left helpless. Miraculously mike doesn't drown he recovers we see some eagle raising the background as he heads to the surface he's blowing bubbles all the way up we now see the camera resting on the bottom. Mike struggles back on. The boat is gasping for air. A sandy asks him if he is all right in the next scene. Now we see mike lying on a chair. Sandy's giving him not some tea. He says he doesn't want anymore and starts to work on a plan to catch the bad guys lieutenant dave. Sandy says she wants to let them have the pearls. Because they're not worth mike's life. But mike says it's not about the pearls anymore. It's a personal grudge. He needs dave's help to put them on tv now. Mike is going to use the underwater television camera to catch the. The's he shows. Dave how it's going to work as he pans across the island. Just mike points to camera towards dave in. Sandi dave says hey look at the prettiest girl in blue island has sandy strikes. Oppose the camera. And she says she's the only girl on lulu island as mike looks to take off underwater. Sandy gives him a big kiss for luck. And mike says he's never had any better luck back underwater with the tv camera. Mike is waiting for all three villains as they are. Now jumping in the water to steal the pearls but this time one of them has a spear gun. Mike has the tv camera pointed at the pro beds. But there's a problem. The bad guys are coming from the wrong direction and they're not on tv. The ambush mike. Who's only hope is to move maneuver them into the frame of a camera. Chaos prevails as they fight and slash at one. another finally might get them to the pearl beds. The spear gun is fired and strikes the bed. Fortunately sandy is watching and as yells to dave look at this cast off now. The cops are headed to the fight during the fight. Mike's left arm is slashed but he continues fighting pulling a regulator out of one of the bad guys. Mouth just then. He sees the to hawaiian police officers free diving or swimming trucks. And says they look like angels with the odds now even justice prevails and the bad guys lose again in the final scene near back on the shore of an allure island. Mike's arms bandage. Dave asks in the. He needs a ride back to honolulu. Sandy tells dave that mike is going to be on vacation. Dave says the sandy. Nobody likes a cop. One thousand nine hundred eighty seven series with ron ely. Maybe someday

The Alcatraz Story

"It's time for another installment of sea hunt. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio. This time. we're going back to episode one of season two and it was titled the alcatraz story this episode premiered on january fourth nineteen fifty nine at the time. Alcatraz was still very much an operation as a prison and it did not close until march of nineteen sixty three. The alcatraz story starts off with a scene of several convicts breaking rocks on the cliffs of alcatraz when all of a sudden one of the convex Falls in and then you see him. Swim-down before surfacing when the guards fish him out but wait. There's a mysterious fishing boat. The olympia watching what's happening. The convict circling is arm as if he's signaling fishing boat the scene shifts to the boat and three guys say they need to find mike nelson. Now we're underwater with mike nelson and he's testing flares for company. When all of a sudden an anchor comes crashing down dangerously close to him and an a skin. Diver comes diving down. Mike is really mad. And he's ready to chew him out when he gets to the surface but they get to the surface in all the guys start apologizing and they say they've came a long way to see mike and mike ask them why to bury mitzi no. They introduced themselves as the brand brothers. Larry johnny and frank they claim to be abalone divers and need to to learn how to scuba dive so they can find the abalone. Mike advises them on the law. But they say hey there lotto buying brothers so he agrees to teach larry and johnny how to scuba dive for three hundred dollars. And we're going to start tomorrow morning at eight thirty. But mike tells them any of them goof off. It's over so the next morning they're out diving. Mike says they're easy to teach. He's going over the equipment the safety procedures in the buddy system underwater now. They're in triples doubles and singles tanks. Bit of everything after their first lesson which by the way lasted five hours underwater and they were below sixty feet might tells the brothers no more diving while he heads back to town jeep to get the tanks fill and he gives them a book on scuba diving. Do read larry tells mike okay teach will be good he had. That's not gonna happen. Mike returns to find the boat empty. And there's bubbles in the water. Larry johnny or diving again just franks shows up and mike and frank get into a fight before mike knocks him down gets into his gear and enters the water to retrieve the two brothers before they kill themselves. Mike finds them underwater. And it looks like they're doing something like the dive master gear exchange. Now they take off and mike goes in hot pursuit for some reason. Johnny turns around rips. Mike mask off. Mike has defined it. Put it on and clear it. Just in time to find larry running out of air. Mike grabs larry and buddy breathes with him to the surface now. Mike is really mad. Schools over another five minutes and all their problems would have been over. They'd be dead his advice. Don't play games with the ocean. The brothers gibb tell mike. They were just practicing. What was in the book. Mike gave them. Mike doesn't really believe them but they take off and as the boat depart mike find frank's wallet on the pier. Apparently he lost it. Doing to fight with mike. He's not frank brennan but frank bronson the plot thickens. Wonder if my god is three hundred dollars the scene now shifts to fisherman's warf and mike is getting the low down on the bronson brothers. They haven't been abalone fishermen for years and there's a fourth brother mark now mike looking for their boat but he spots it on often abandoned peer in oakland and decides that he needs to scuba dive out to see what's up. The board is empty. But before mike can get on board the three bronze brothers show up his only option. Hide under the boat when the engine starts. He grabbed a dangling. Bow-line and hitches a ride. They're up to no good. The pressure is tremendous as he hangs on an fears of the blades of the prop behind them. But the boat finally slows then stops. And larry johnny jump in on scuba and have an extra set a gear. What's going on. Mike surfaces and sees their right off alcatraz. It's two against one. Nothing new for mike nelson. He follows them down to some rocks underwater where they deploy a surface buoy. Then we see a convict one zero nine eight six. That would be mark bronson. He died into the water now. Mike gets it as he sees the convict getting into a wet suit. And putting on the gear. Mike shoots a flare off to signal. The guards on alcatraz hoping it works. Mike is now fully rigged mask wetsuit. Tank regulator weight belt and knife and their high tailing it off against a strong title current. But larry turns and he spots mike. He's going to fight a rearguard action while johnny and markswoman. It's a knife fight. And it's a good one larry's tough clever and slippery but might get behind. Him cuts his air hose and brings him to the surface. And that's where we see. Mike's knife into larry's first stage. The flare did its job. And there's a patrol boat from the island coming on the scene that's one bronson in the bag on the boat. They followed the brothers bubbles and when they catch up mike dies back in lights off a flare and pokes it at the brothers and another massive underwater fight breaks out mike pulls off marks masks shuts air off and shoves him johnny he then puts johnny in a stranglehold and brings the two brothers to the surface. Mike has thwarted escape attempt. Larry says on the boat. It was a pretty good scheme. Yeah mike doesn't think so. Wow this first. Episode new year was jam packed with some great underwater fight scenes. I guess they really wanted to get everyone excited about the show again. And you most definitely will recognize johnny bronson. That was leonard. Nimoy yes mr spock. He shows up again. So that's the alcatraz story from nineteen fifty-nine the first episode of season. Two of seon. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll be back again soon with another installment of seon. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio.

Wet Notes - 4-9-21

"This is wet notes here scuba shock radio for april ninth two thousand and twenty one first up today. I'd like to give you an update on new netflix. Documentary see spiracy. You might recall that. I introduced you to this film in a previous segment of wet notes. Well it did premiere on netflix's advertised. And i had a chance to watch. She spiracy a couple of weeks ago. The film is eighty nine minutes long and it can be captivating and controversial. Like i said this is certainly raising a great deal controversy especially as it relates to sustainable seafood and fishing. There's a couple of organizations that they called out into spiracy earth island institute and the marine stewardship council actually marine stewardship council issued a response on their website within days of the premier and every day. I see something more coming out related to the controversy. But i encourage you to watch the film and then decide for yourself about what it is saying like. I said lots of controversy. That's spiracy on net flicks now. Here's something that. I found really interesting. I came across an article that talked about how scientists are using thin wales to map out what lies beneath the sea floor. Now according to to seismologists vaclav kina from the czech academy in prague and john nab elec of oregon state university in corvallis oregon the song of the fin. Whales are loud enough to penetrate the earth's crust and revealed deep structures. I guess they have a network of fifty four bottomed size meter seismometers that the tech sound waves traveling through the ground and they picked up the of whales as they were passing by. Now they have a one hundred and eighty nine decibels song and that song can last from two and a half to five hours as they did more analysis they were able to map the underlying rock structures. According to these guys this is just as effective as those air cannons that are polluting the ocean with all that noise how practical this is yet to be seen. But you've gotta admit it is interesting. Now here's an update on the lectured aluminum tanks situation. You might recall back at the end of february. I told you about luxembourg Decision to exit the aluminum tank business and that they were looking to sell their plants in the us and the uk more. Here's some good news. Metal impact out of elk grove village in illinois is acquiring the graham north carolina luxembourg cylinder plant metal impact is no stranger to scuba tank business. They've been around since nineteen fifty nine and in two thousand fourteen. They purchase worthington. Aluminum cylinders has been providing aluminum scuba tanks to excess scuba and see pearls for a number of years. We've got quite a few from excess scuba over the past couple of years and so we're pretty familiar with metal impacts. This is some good news for the. Us aluminum Scuba tank supply chain. There's absolutely no doubt that. The pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the scuba industry. But i guess it's not all bad news if you happen to be in the right place and it seems that hawaii is those right places especially for new diver certifications. There's a recent article in scuba diving magazine. Titled more hawaiians getting certified than before the pandemic turns out that even though the travel has been restricted to and from the islands more locals are turning to scuba aloha scuba on awad who had reported a one hundred and twenty percent increase in new diver certifications. In two thousand and twenty. They went from twenty seven in two thousand and nineteen to eighty three in two thousand and twenty spurred by whole families going for they're open water certification with some great diving. It certainly makes sense to mask up and dive in our aloha state. Last week i was trying to see if the ocean based climate solutions act of two thousand and twenty was being introduced in this session of congress. Well no update on that yet but i did come across something very interesting. There is a house select committee on the climate crisis now. This committee was created during the one hundred sixteenth congress. That was the last one so it hasn't been around long. But they did produce a climate action plan of two thousand twenty. And that's called the congressional action plan for a clean energy economy and a healthy resilient and just america committee is chaired by representative. Kathy castor from florida and the ranking chair is representative garrett graves from louisiana now. I watched their organizing meeting from march nineteenth. Let's say there's just a little bit of difference on the ideas of how to approach In the approaches in making the us carbon zero by two thousand fifty but as representative castor stated. It's time to turn recommendations into policy. Now i'll be tracking our actions and keep you updated here and finally you might recall. Last year the uss bonham rashard an eight hundred forty four foot long and fibia assault ship burned out of control for five days. Now that was in san diego california. But now senator. Marco rubio from florida is proposing that the ship be used to create an artificial reef down in florida little bit of background. The navy did some cost analysis On what it would take to restore the ship to operational status an estimated that that would be somewhere between two point. Five and three point five billion dollars but the cost to decommission and scrap the bonham rashard would be about thirty million dollars. Senator rubio didn't provide any details on where the ship might be sunk and be become an artificial reef but he did say that it could be done for less than thirty million dollars to scrap the ship. This word Happened it would be. We'll keep an eye on it and see where it goes. Fingers crossed that will have another artificial reef down in florida. Something that big to dive on. Well that's it for this installment of wet notes for april ninth. Two thousand and twenty

"Hello again everyone. And thank you for tuning into scuba shack radio. I'm your host jeff center penal. Well it is hard to believe that we are all set to close out february. Two thousand twenty one and what a crazy weather month it has been just up here in the northeast but as we've seen down south as well but doesn't it seem like we just celebrated new year's a few days ago and here we are just three weeks away from spring. I for one anxiously awaiting some warmer weather but before we get warm next weekend. Is our ice diver class. Now i'm going to be on the surface doing some video and photography While monte chris and matt take a public safety team through their Three certification dives. Let's hope the warming hut is nice and toasty now with this episode. I'm going to continue the evolution of scuba shack radio. I'm going to be adding a new segment to each show. And this new segment will be at the top and it was being titled wet notes and wet notes will be the first segment of each show. And this is where i'm going to focus on news from the scuba diving. World are ocean conservation over the past couple of weeks and maybe pass on a little bit of tidbits without going into a great deal of detail. I thought this would be a good way to start off each show to stay abreast of current events and pass along some interesting information. I will continue to do more detailed segments on various ocean health and sustainability topics along with some history in travel and of course sea hunt. It still alive will be alive and well on scuba shack radio today. I'm going to discuss one of my next is and that's nassau where we'll be diving with stuart cove but let's start off today show with wet notes This is wet notes on scuba shaq radio for sunday february twenty eighth two thousand and twenty one. Well i up today. I'm going to do an update on dry suit talq now ever since i've owned a dry suit i've been using those little pouches of talk to dust my wrist seals and neck seals. And that makes it easier to put on especially if it gets a little humid. Well we used to get these little pouches from magnet who then became gear aid when we could no longer get them from juried. We switched to getting them from diving unlimited international or dui. Recently we ran low on these talca pouches. Wanted to order some more. But do you. I stopped producing those talk pouches. I guess i'm guessing near some concern around. The safety of talk i noticed has been in news over recent years. So donna reached out to peak from dui and he suggested cornstarch to dust are seals. Make sure you do it every time now. That sounds a little strange to me. But it looks like people are using it in place of the talq. We'll give it a try. And i'll let you know how goes cornstarch. It's not just for cooking next up. Is things start opening up and we travel outside the country. We're going to need to get tested for in nineteen before we can come back well. Resorts are out there. And they're starting to accommodate their customers and making it easier to get tested. So for example. I just saw where enroll roett to resorts. The turquoise bay dive resort and the mayan princess beach dive resort are offering onsite cova testing on thursdays and fridays. And then what happens. Is you'll get electronic. Results are available in three hours. And then you'll have a hard copy the next day now you still have to pay for it in a costs about fifty bucks. Then i also check the cocoa view site down there and roett tan and it looks like they are also offering onsite testing but their prices coming in at eighty five dollars so it looks like if you're going to travel to row attend you'll find it easier to get tested for corona virus and get back home as long as you test negative but i think more and more of these dive operators out there are going to provide that cova testing or options for people so that you can go travel and then make it easier for you to get back home. Also last i think a couple of weeks ago. The president of the united states signed executive order. One three nine eight and with that executive order it mandated. That masks are to be worn on all public maritime vessels including ferries. What does that mean for dive boats. Well deana did. Some research and found out that this mandate includes commercial vessels used for dive charters and dive related activities. You'll need to be masked up upon boarding disembarking and the duration of travel. Obviously this can only apply to us. Operators i think this makes sense and i'm sure common sense will prevail given our unique circumstances when we go diving way back in the beginning of two thousand twenty i did a segment on dive travel insurance then in mid two thousand and twenty. I noticed the divers alert network. Dan their travel insurance was not available on their website is back now. However there was a short article on dive newswire that indicated that there are qualified cove in nineteen related cancellation and interruptions covered. There's a lot of detail on their website. You can read through. Essentially they cover prepaid travel arrangements. If you your host at your destination you traveling companion or family member test positive for covid. Nineteen there's also levels of coverage while traveling but you need to do your research. The good news however is that the dan travel insurance is back and it looks like they are helping to try and address the corona virus issues. It's always a good day when i go out to the mailbox and that the latest issue of the journal of diving history has arrived. That happened earlier this week. The cover of the first quarter two thousand twenty one magazine features to five women who made up the team of tech tight to mission six dash fifty. Which was america's first off female saturation team. The five women included peggy lucas. An hurley hotline renata lynch true elena schmidt and sylvia earle the journal of diving history. Formerly historical. diver magazine is the official magazine of the historical diving society. Usa and is part of your membership. I can't wait to dive into all the articles.

Underwater Navigation

"Last weekend. I was teaching a private open water class to a woman who wanted to get her confined water. Training done before heading out to the south pacific to work and to complete are open water dies. That's pretty nice. Don't you think well as we were finishing up our classroom work. We reviewed the logistics for our pool session. The next day. I pulled up the map on my computer with the street view to show her where to enter the building and the location of the parking and as we were closing out she said just give her the address. She'll let the gps in her phone. Get into the pool. Pretty simple and she arrived on time the next day at the pool. Ready for our session. Now during our pool sessions we have our students where computer on the wrist. I like to let them get used to the feel and also looking at the computer while underwater and as i was explaining that we liked to wear the computer on our right wrist with our compass on the left wrist. She asked if there was an underwater. Gps available instead of a compass. That's a reasonable question. Right now i would say not really. I know that garment makes a dive. Computer the descent mark one that has surfaced. Gps to mark your entry and exit points but the glamour on their website states. Gps tracking and satellite communication does not work underwater technology however continues to be amazing. I did come across a company. Navigate out northridge california that is creating a solution of sorts it involves a gps gateway which is a floating radio antenna with a suspended array below and that communicate with a wrist mounted unit it uses an acoustic signals that determines the bearing and range from the gps gateway and then plot your position on the dive site. It's an interesting piece of technology and still evolving. The website for naveh made says it will be available this year. The cost of the wrist unit will be fifteen hundred dollars while the gps gateway will also come in at fifteen hundred dollars. There was some reference that they would be making the gps gateway available to boat operators. So it would appear that we are at the cusp of some new and exciting ways to navigate during our diving but as we know the proliferation adoption and success could take awhile the wrist. Mount unit is only good. If you have the gps gateway available it could take awhile until there are enough of these units out there to make to make it worthwhile purchasing a fifteen hundred dollar unit. You could end up with the gadget on your arm. That isn't going to give you what you want. So that's where we come to the tried and true underwater navigator. We all start are underwater navigation. Training deal i open water diver course when we are introduced to the compass and how to use it for some simple navigation on the surface and underwater. But if most people are like me. I wasn't really ready to navigate effectively on a dive. I needed more experience and training. We get this during our advanced open water training when we do more navigation training and conduct a navigation dive to extend our knowledge we learn about kick cycles how to measure distance and extend our skills with a compass for most people. This is pretty much the extent of their navigation training. So you'll have to make sure that you practice use your compass during a dive to set a course and see if you can return to the boat us time to judge your distance and kick cycles learned to trust your compass and you'll find your underwater navigation skills improved. You can also continue your navigation training and education with the water navigation. Specialty course for the patty specialty. You go into more detail about measuring distance how to use natural navigation techniques and more use of the compass including underwater patterns after completing your knowledge development. Which can be done using the patio electronic learning platform. You'll conduct three open. Water dives to build your skills and proficiency and underwater navigation having that confidence and competence in using your compass and finding your way underwater reduces your stress and anxiety and make sure diving more relaxed and fun right now. We really aren't able to avail ourselves of underwater. Gps it sounds like there might be solutions in the future and as we have come to appreciate technology advances. We'll be standing by for now however you can't go wrong in developing your skills than the tried and true underwater navigation techniques and equipment

We may actually be able to conduct an ice diver class this year. A lot of times you try to schedule this training only to be stymied with the lack of ice. Perhaps this year will be different on another encouraging front. We have worked out all the details for our memorial day trip to nassau. Where will spend a few days diving with stuart cove. We are keeping our fingers crossed..

Sea Hunt - It's Still Alive: Point of No Return

"It's time for another installment of seahorn. It's still alive in this time. We're going to season four episode one titled point of no return and it premiered on january seventh nineteen sixty one sixty years ago. The episode starts out with a boat pulling up alongside coast guard cutter. The boat is dropping off a reporter. Dorothy may brooke. She is heard that. Mike nelson is on board and figures. There must be a big story. If he's involved. The captain of the cutter tells dotty that you'll have to wait three days to talk to mike. The research is about mike. Living and working out of the scuba sphere. A two hundred and fifty feet now. That was right at the beginning of the work. That the davy jacques cousteau and ed link. We're doing on underwater habitats so sea hunt was a little ahead of the game after dadi get some basic information from the three scientists on board the cutter. The scene shifts to mike underwater. He's in doubles swimming with a big bag of rocks. And he's going entire inside the scuba sere. The scuba sphere is small diving bell shaped habitat with liquid helium and oxygen tanks. Act out once. Mike is inside. He gets a call from the booth. Lieutenant totally tells him that a tropical storm is heading your way rather than hall him up. It seems that mike is going to ride it out so he strings up. His hammock gets ready for bed in gets into the sack and because he says he can't raid the refrigerator like he normally does. He settled for a bottle of liquid protein. Well you guessed it. The big storm hits and as the cutters tossed about so is the scuba sere. Suddenly one of the tanks cured to the side of the sphere breaks loose and crashes down on the hatch rendering it inoperable. Mike can't fix it and now they can't bring them up and properly decompress. The project engineer vic jennings says it will take a day to make a new hatch. Should they cut him loose. They try to get them off the bottom and ride it out but discovers fear is being dragged it gets caught on a coral formation. Two hundred fifty feet. Mike gears up with his doubles and he has some additional small tanks between the double cylinders. Not sure what they are. But there's copper tubing Spiraling up to the vows on his. Saunders looks like kind of like a still. Maybe it's helium. They never really say as his fear breaks free. Mike reid it along until the cable and telephone connections part and luckily to screw this. Fear settles when the bottom in an upright position. So mike can go back inside and he says that he needs to spend his second night in this chamber of ours. I gotta tell you mike wetsuit. Looks pretty beat up in this episode starting to peel or something like that will now. The storm has passed the cutter realizes that mike is no longer attached. They have a new door but now they have to find a habitat might goes outside and tries to inflate one of his marker. Booties but it won't work at eight atmospheres so he takes out a balloon. Blows it up a bit ties it off to a line and sends it up. Will you guessed it it bursts now. He reverts to filling up a pair of denim jeans tied off at the bottom. I remember this from my time in the navy where you could use your pants. As type of life preserver on. Mike sends the inflated pants to the surface they briefly mark the location before collapsing. But lieutenant totally thought he saw something so they stay in the area back inside scuba sphere. Mike says that he needs to conserve. Air and pray then. He remembers something from this cub scout. Days and concocts a plan to use his wetsuit. Top as a surface marker buoy. He goes back outside. Fills it up and shoots it to the surface and then ties it off to the scuba sphere dadi and or intently scanning surface suddenly dadi spots to wet suit top. Well the next thing we see. Is mike nelson signs wetsuit. Top two hundred and fifty feet dragging a new hatch cable and telephone line across the bottom. He fixes the hatch. Attach is the cable and splices in the telephone. It's cold wet work he says and he's ready to rejoin the human race. Might get back inside. He hits the hammock and sleeps through the hours of decompression. They have to bang on the sphere to wake him up once. Mike opens the hatch up. Pops dotty to give him a big hug. Mike says he must be in heaven. 'cause this is the angel he's been dreaming about what are the best of my knowledge. This is the only episode. That dadi mayfield was in. Although it appears that from the dialogue from lake that daddy was intent on marrying mike nelson or as as he puts it put a ring through his nose. Dorothy mayfield was played by the actress. Joyce meadows whether there wasn't a lot of diving in the point of no return but mike nails nelson was well ahead of the likes of george. Bon jacques cousteau and egg link in deep sea. Saturation habitation

Maury who clayton a hero saved might be interested in the finding captain. Sellers asked my to find out what happened before the dredging operators blow up the ship in the next scene mike walking down the pier carrying his doubles in one hand and the other equipment slung over his shoulder. One handed doubles. Wow there he meets the survivors. Jack clayton in tom. Worry along with jack's wife. Susan is it me or there are a lot of suzy's and susan's on john. Jack wants to dive with. Mike and tom will be on. Deck for support might convince the dredging operators to give him forty eight hours on the rack and try to find out what happened to l. s. t. four to seven as the scene shifts. We see jack getting into his gear. Mike i'm not so sure jack knows what he's doing. Jack says he's just a little rusty so the giants dryden and make their way to direct can split up. Mike little confused because jack doesn't seem to be all that incompetent in the water. Well they don't find anything and get back on the vote jackson's really agitated. They only have one more day to solve the mystery as the sun comes up the next day and they're back on the water. Mike is getting all geared up and ready to go. Clayton is fiddling around. Mike frustrated at the delay when suddenly clayton drops tanks over the side. And you see it's sinking to the bottom. Mike has no choice but to retrieve it and hoping that this is last delay and that the tank isn't a jinx on jack's back so now the two of them are back. Underwater jet goes to the bow area. And mike heads. Aft inside the engine room. And he finds a blast hole below the waterline as he exits the space with this newfound knowledge. Suddenly a nightmare of junk is falling on top of him. It could only have been shoved on top of him by one person jack. Clayton isn't a clumsy amateur. Mike frees himself and chases. After jack jack pulls knife and they get into a fight might prevails and takes jack back to the surface with a hammerlock back on the boat. We find out that. Jack wasn't trying to kill mike. Just trying to scare you. See jack confesses that it was all his fault that l. s. t. four to seven seven sank during the attack. It says he's he steered the ship into a reef where it sank and that the enemy didn't do it at all. Tom is very angry now. And they locked jack in the cabin while mike makes one more dive on the wreck. Jack tells suzy the ship sinking was all his fault. Susan doesn't care. She understands just then. Mike produces his find a piece of metal from japanese shell. That shank sank the four to seven seven. Jack still a hero a synthetic hero. Well i guess. Hollywood took a lot of liberties here. Let's see an ls t. Operating independently in the caribbean by itself doing battle with either a japanese ship or submarine seems a little farfetched. But as we know from mike nelson. Nothing is improbable.

Sea Hunt - It's Still Alive - Cave Diving

"Off It's time for another installment of Sea Hunt. It's still alive. And today we're going back to season 2 episode 21 for cave diving cave diving Premier package on May 24th 1959 in this episode. Mike is working with a geologist George Brian who is searching for uranium in an underwater cave. George has been doing his diving with his wife Susie up until now but needs Mike helped to explore further and do more work. They're diving off the boat Olympia with its Captain pops. Mike and George hop in and swim down with her watertight geiger counter. Mike has a doubles and George's in a single tank as they approached the cave. They put the ear pieces from the geiger counter into their ear and they take out the probe Mike's off the Geiger counters chattering like magpies. All of a sudden things start to shake Mike is spinning around. George is at the cave entrance. It's an underwater landslide. When all the turbulence is over, there's a huge Rock blocking the entrance to the cave and George is trapped inside under a pile of rocks. Mike shines his light and injured signals back. Mike can't budget Iraq. So he heads back to the surface. He says he has less than an hour before Susie becomes a widow. Mike tells pops. He needs the ship-to-shore radio to call the pier and they need to bring out some big hooks to pull away the Rocks. He's talking really fast. George only has 46 minutes left now. He tells Pops that it's real bad. Now they're desperately scanning the surface for the help from the pier the boat rounds the point and gets there within 14 minutes Susie is on board in her scuba gear bag ready to help George is down to thirty minutes Suzy insists on helping Mike despite his objections. Now Mike and Susie make it to the caves entrance and struggle to get the anchors attached to the large Rock. Finally. They get them in place and Mike's ends up a flare for the boat to pull the rock the boat strains when suddenly the anchors Breakaway failure Susie is desperate trying to get into the cave. Mike is trying to calm her down and he said she has to be rough with her in the commotion Susie's air hose gets fouled and they have to Buddy breathe to the surface. Susie climbs on board the hooks won't work. She's crying pops is trying to comfort her. What will Mike do now? Here's where things really get interesting. Well, Mike just happens to have some Dynamite on board just in case you know, pop says that's kind of risky. Mike says there's no other option but like pops was in the Seabees in World War Two and says they use Gophers to carry a line through a pipe. So they concoct a plan to use a fish to thread the line off The Rock. Well, it just so happens. There's a barrel on Deck with a live fish might takes out the fish and ties a line around its tail and heads back down to the cave with the fish house and a speargun. He checks to see if George is still alive looks at his watch time is running out. He lets the fish go into the cave ties the fishing line to the heavier line and tries to log the fish back with his light like tries to grab the fish. It's too fast time for the speargun. He's got one shot takes dead aim, and our hero fish is a goner my calls in the fish pulls the line through and now has the heaving line around the rock ties the bowl and shoot a flare to the surface and Lifeboat cranks up its engine. Finally The Rock is pulled from the entrance my crushes in freeze George and brings him to the surface. Mike yells out. I got him and pop lets out a big Yahoo back on the boat. George and Susie are reunited. Mike is lounging now. They say George's leg will be okay. They're talking about the fish that saved George Susie says that were fish was Mike Nelson. As the episodes ends, they're talking about pops idea from when he was in the Navy and Pop's final line is I wasn't in the Navy. I was just the Seabees. Hm wonder what my CB friends would think of that now you might recognize George if you're of a certain age, that would be Herbert Anderson better identified with Dennis the Menace his father Henry Mitchell. Well, that was certainly not what we think of when we think about cave diving using a fresh to thread a line around Iraq is a little out there but if anyone can do it, it would be Mike Nelson on Sea Hunt. off

Chasing Coral

"The documentary chasing Coral premiered in July 2017 and it is a powerful film and since we've been talking about coral reef conservation at the shop thought it would be good to do a review of chasing Coral here on scuba Shack Radio. I watched it again a few days ago and it was just as impactful as the first time I saw. The documentary was conceived by Richard veevers who is currently CEO of the ocean agency. Richard worked at a top London advertising agency before he got involved with a passion on Ocean conservation. He was working on a project called Excel Caitlin Seaview survey regarding images of coral reefs that's where he started to understand the impacts of coral bleaching. Around this time. He watched a documentary called Chasing Ice produced by Jeff orloski and chasing Coral was born. I thought I'd give some key statistics on what it took to put together chasing Coral first. It took about three years to shoot over 500 hours of incredible underwater footage off. There were Thirty countries contributing to the documentary and more than 500 volunteers involved just an incredible effort. The film won the People's Choice Award for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and the 2018 Emmy for Outstanding nature documentary. Jeff Orlowski was originally from Staten Island, New York. He went to Stanford to study anthropology got into filmmaking and worked on the Extreme Ice survey that turned into Chase nice in 2009. He found it exposure Labs a production company focused on socially relevant issues. So chasing Coral is really about the quest to document with imagery a coral bleaching event. By reviewing what was happening at carries forward Reef in in the Florida Keys and at airport Reef in America Samoa. They determined that they would need to build a viable underwater time lapse camera. That's when they go to a company in Boulder. Colorado called view into the blue and they were going to build a housing. That would keep it self clean. It just so happens the exact Rego works at view Into the Blue. He describes himself as a coral nerd and becomes a main player in the documentary. With the cameras developed, they deploy to Hawaii Bermuda and the Bahamas and they put down their cameras and wait a couple months to get the images. It's a failure. The images are out of focus a lost opportunity. It's back to the drawing board to fix the problems before their next attempt. The next opportunity is on the Great Barrier Reef. They head out deploy their cameras and wait a large typhoon impacts their plans. So they read the place to another Island lizard Island, but they aren't able to take any of their special cameras the team needs to do time lapse manually that means going out every day setting up the camp exactly as before and getting the photos painstaking and exhausting after more than a hundred days. They complete the work over that timeframe. The coral has bleached died and his overgrown by algae Zack is extremely emotional at this incredible loss. It's crazy to think of water temperatures at 95° Fahrenheit, but that's what it was dead. Another team went to New Caledonia where they observed an amazing phenomenon fluorescent corals an attempt to Shield itself from the temperatures an amazing sight am amazing colors just before bleaching extremely sad to see the corals stunning last gasps. The documentary continues with Zach and Richard presenting their work at the international coral reef Symposium in Hawaii the time lapse photography of the coral reef dying over a two-month period of dramatic and overpowering the reaction of the attendees demonstrates the sadness. The film wraps up with Jack diving with one of his Heroes doctor Charlie Verona Pioneer in Coral research and conservation. They are diving on a beautiful unimpacted part of the reef off Charlie reflects back on maybe he didn't do enough. Maybe we all need to do more. Corals are being assaulted on many fronts not just climate change but pollution sunscreen and carelessness citizens are trying and we need our governments to act as well. Perhaps a new day is Dawning. If you haven't yet seen chasing Coral. You can find it on Netflix. Please find a time. You won't be disappointed. If you've already watched it believe me. It's worth watching again. We can't let them
