The Chester A. Poling
"Today. I'm going to do something a little different for this installment of your next dive normally tried to take you to a dive destination where we talk about the trip from a number of different perspectives. The travel the lodging the dive operator. Oh yeah the diving. Now we've been around the world. But today i'm going to focus on one particular dive that is almost in our backyard. It is one of the most iconic dives here in new england and that is the wreck of the chester. Polling off gloucester mass. The chester polling was a coastal tanker. That sank in a brutal storm on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven. The tanker had just left everett massachusetts and was bound for newington new hampshire. That information is pretty consistent in the research but there is other conflicting information about where she had been. And what cargo she delivered for example some documentation said she had previously delivered kerosene to new jersey while others indicated that the heating oil was delivered to everett mass. I would suspect that delivery to everett mass to be more likely always interesting when you Doing research to get this type of inconsistency now the chester polling was bill in nineteen thirty four at mariners harbor new york by united dry docks incorporated it was originally in the plattsburgh sacconi somewhere along the line at also known as the mobile albany before getting renamed as the chester polling at the time of its sinking it was owned by the motor vessel polling brothers and that was number one inc. I wasn't able to find who was actually named after but obviously some member of the family. So that's a little bit of history about the ship now on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven capital captain. Bert charles burgess was in command. The forecast for that day was for thirty five mile an hour winds along with fifteen to twenty foot seas. the chester polling chester. A polling left. Everett are left everett at six thirty. A m well as we all know. Forecast can be wrong. The winds built up to fifty miles per hour and to seize goddess highs. Thirty feet facing the mounting sees captain. Burge's tried to get more stability by adding more ballast but at ten thirty a m a thirty foot waves smashed into the tanker and broke it in half the captain called for abandoning the ship. Six of the seven members of the crew were saved. I believe it was the cook jail. Derosa from providence rhode island who perished the sir. The stern section of the chester polling came to rest off easter point gloucester originally in about seventy five feet of water with the bow section sinking about four miles off of eastern point in about one hundred ninety feet of water subsequent winter. Storms move the stern section to its present location about eight hundred yards off of eastern point about ninety five feet of water. I think the bottom might be a little bit deeper than that. However the stern section of the chester polling is what some folks call hollywood wreck sitting upright and is probably the most popular wreck dive off. Cape ann as that areas known. Now i- i dove the chester polling way back in july two thousand and five. It was my fortieth dive and a double dip on. The polling was part of my advanced open water class. These dyes would constitute my deep and wreck advanced. Open water dives. At that time. I was still diving in a seven. Millimeter wetsuit with the appropriate gloves and hood. I use the standard aluminum. Eighty tank with nighthawks. Thirty two. I can still remember the anxiety that had doing. The first real wreck dive in the northeast but once in the water what an amazing dive the visibility that day was thirty feet and my max step was at eighty five. Even though it was july the water temperature on iraq was fifty degrees. It was incredible to move along the deck and reach the mid mid ship section where. The tanker broken half absolutely mesmerizing but with an aluminum. Eighty you don't get much bottom time and after about fifteen minutes we headed back to the up line and after are appropriate safety. Stop we climb back aboard the boat and got ready to do it again. Total dive time was twenty six minutes the second dive that day was just as spectacular and pretty much the same profile. Let me just say in a wetsuit. It can get pretty chilly. I didn't go back to the chester polling until august. Two thousand nine and that was my last trip there. It was my two hundred and forty ninth dive but this time i did it in a dry suit and hope to get some good video of iraq. I still dove aluminum. Eighty the dive was just as i remembered and just as exciting visibility again was thirty feet. And my max. Depth was eighty two with and the bottom temperature. That day was forty eight degrees still very cold but so much better in a dry suit again however with an aluminum eighty. You just. Don't get much bottom time especially if your task loading like shooting video so my recommendation is that if you are planning to die the polling you might want to consider a little bit bigger tank something like a steal one hundred or going to doubles. I know that i wouldn't consider going back with anything less than a steel one hundred tank. How do you get to the chester polling back. Then we use cape and divers but they closed up several years ago and recently the dive boat cape and diver to was purchased by several guys from boston. An air now operating regularly chart regular charters again became an diverse to is a forty five foot. us coastguard registered dive vessel. It is spacious and right now with limited divers on board you get plenty of room to get ready and dive but you don't get a lot of but you don't get a lot of time because you don't have a lot of time to get ready because the is only a few minutes from the dock so be prepared one thing. Different about northeast wreck diving. Is that as a diver. You need to bring all your gear that includes tanks weights everything. It's not like diving at a resort. Don't get caught short by not being prepared with all your own stuff now. Here's an interesting element. That i discovered during my research. It appears that in nineteen sixties. The chester polling was length lengthened. By maybe twenty six or so feet. That doesn't sound like much. But at the time of her sinking her length with two hundred and eighty two feet so that lengthening was about ten percent of the original ship's length could this have been a contributing factor for the ship splitting in half. Two thousand twenty one first up today is in another idea for diving with a purpose in one of the most recent newsletters from the coral restoration foundation the coral chronicles. There was a report that cr f. is teaming up with the atlantis. Dive resort in douma getty to offer a unique opportunity to participate in a week long program at the result in helping them build and maintain the largest coral nursery endowing. Actually the town where. Atlantis is located. The program is being sponsored by the coral restoration foundation. The loveland living planet aquarium and the meat foundation. The program runs from september twenty fourth to october. First two thousand twenty two there are planned educational sessions on coral ecology along with restoration efforts and techniques. You also conduct restoration. Dives along with some fun dies. This sounds really fascinating. One of the pictures into newsletter showed the table coral at apo island. I vividly remember that area when we dove air in two thousand nineteen there wasn't any pricing available in the article and you'll have to contact the hotel directly if you have the time and desire to dive with a purpose check out this program and market on your calendar. Long time ago. Donna and i lived in hawaii that was in the mid nineteen eighties. At that time we got to experience. What was probably one of the first while in walls in honolulu. If you're not familiar with wilem walls you can check them out. The wall was a large mural of the humpback whale on the side of a building near waikiki. It was quite impressive. Well it might not be a while and wall but if you happen to be near brant rock in mansfield massachusetts you can catch a the view of a mural of a large shark painted on the side of an old restaurant according to wicked local dot com. The mural was painted by a local artist. Shane leonard. Shane was a former football player at boston college. Who has a passion for painting and a passion for sharks. Now the muros on the side of the former arthur and patch restaurant that closed back in two thousand fifteen. The shark faces divers as they head down ocean street which is a one way street. So you can't miss it say. Shane says he likes the way shark. Show emotion. the photo is pretty impressive. there's no guarantee that the building won't be torn down. Now that is unoccupied but according to shane. Even if it doesn't survive it was worth doing so if you happen to be near mansfield mass check out the shark mural on ocean street about a month ago. Patio wear foundation announced their fourth annual aware week. Now this year it will run from september. Eighteenth through september twenty six two thousand and twenty one the whole idea behind aware week is to empower the global dive community to lead or take part in conservation activities in courses focused on local action for global impact in the past aware has focused on two elements marine debris and vulnerable marine species this year in concert with patties blueprint for ocean action. They're adding three more components. Climate change marine protected areas and coral reefs. Some of the ways. That dive shops can participate or by conducting aware classes like dive against debris coral conservation or the aware specialty. Also like us. You can become a one hundred percent aware dive centre where you provide a monthly contribution in support of the patty certifications you award. We are very proud to be one hundred percent aware. But here's something that. Patty aware foundation needs to work on. We need more notice as to win. Aware week is happening. I wasn't sure what was happening this year and our calendar filled up and we weren't able to get things scheduled as i mentioned at the top of the show. We've already created are twenty twenty two calendar and it would be nice to know when aware week twenty twenty two is happening. I also mentioned at the top to show that the re photo contest results were in and that i didn't win while scuba diving magazine. Magazine's two thousand and twenty one through the lens contest is also complete. The winners were recently released at scuba diving. Dot com and the photos will be revealed in september october special photo issue. They received one thousand seven hundred and nineteen photos from around the world. The contest categories included behavior compact camera macro and wide angle. The entries were judged on beauty originality and unique encounters. I check them out and they are spectacular. I only wish. I had the talent impatience to do that kind of work. Now if you wanna get a jump onto twenty twenty two contests they will start accepting entries january third two thousand twenty two and you can submit your photos through may thirty first two thousand and twenty two and finally we recently received our two thousand twenty two aqualung buyer's guide along with information on all the new products coming down from aqualung apex. So i thought. I'd give you a little preview on what's on the horizon. I from aqualung. They are releasing a new regulator the helix pro and the helix it looks like the helix pro is a mid range regular and i think it's replacing their core. It is a balanced first and second stage in his environmentally sealed with four low pressure ports and two high pressure ports. It was built for cold water and has the automatic closure device or a cd. lower end. helix is not environmentally sealed. And it doesn't have a cd and it's designed for warmer water. Also coming out in two thousand and twenty two is their new. Aqua fluck aqua flex men and aqua flex woman wetsuits. I think it's a redesign of their tried and true. Aqua flex line they also have a two millimeter. Free flex wetsuit now. The i one hundred computers going to come in a new color yellow and speaking of colors. They've added a number of different colors to various products including something called sand petrol red and orange as for eight packs. They also have a new regulator the xl four osha and it is billed as a totally sustainable regulator bay from post consumer waste it comes in grey or mint with some great etching. On the first stage. I suspect it's just like the xl four plus being an overbalanced diaphragm regulator with two hp and four l. p. ports. It looks pretty. Sharp and apex is releasing a new dive computer to the sx. It will be program can program up to six gases and monitor six transmitters. The has a titanium basil making it lightweight endurable but also has a color display. There's something more that require. Some more research It says it has in oh to analyze or onboard. But no to sell gotta check that out a little bit. There's a lot more out there and over time. "This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for sunday july fourth two thousand and twenty one first up today i wanna talk about re fest two thousand and twenty one this october. The reef environmental educational foundation will again be holding refenced from thursday october fourteenth to sunday october. Seventeenth in key largo. That's four days of some great activity. The festivities kickoff on thursday. And one o'clock. You can then get a couple of days of diving in on friday and saturday morning with a two tank dive from either key divers amaury dive resort or essence. Those charters run about ninety dollars and they go out at eight am. If you wanna do a kayak tour you could also do that. For sixty dollars with florida bay outfitters. There are seven afternoon workshops and seminars and activities at john pennekamp park the coral reef restoration foundation. The history of diving museum and the florida keys. Wild bird sanctuary. Wow this sounds like a great event. Unfortunately i won't be able to make it down due to a family obligation but this sounds really good. Be sure to check out repressed. That's reef fest. Two thousand twenty one on their website. Well who watches the tv. Show curse of oak island. I think matt has watched every episode. And i think they're still searching for treasure but i came across an interesting article about one of the guys on the show. I guess tony sampson had a strange situation happen about a year ago tony's frequently on the show and he runs a tour company called salty door. Salty dog tours. Well he was taking some tourists out when one of his guests hat blew off so quickly turned the boat around to fetch the hat. And that's when he spotted something else a voter in the water. Apparently the boater was on his maiden voyage with this new boat when it capsized and he couldn't get to his life jacket because it was tied to the boats seat ono so tony fortunately rescued the voter in what is called the oak island triangle triangle. I guess the boat subsequently washed up on oak island now at least those guys found something there about a year ago. Olympus announced that they were getting out of the digital imaging business and that they would not be making cameras any longer and that would have been a shame if these Tech this technology went by the wayside. I really liked my Olympus t g six. well don't worry. A new company named 'em digital solutions is producing the old olympics. Cameras binoculars audio gear. They took over in january. Two thousand twenty one. Their website is get olympus dot com. Now if you want to know more about the company checkout oem dash digital solutions dot com. This company is based out of tokyo. And it's led by sha guinea saga motto all digital solutions employees about two thousand people with evaluation of twenty seven billion yen or about three hundred and thirty three million. Us dollars the oem comes from the nineteen seventies oem solutions that they put in place to make cameras smaller more rugged and quieter. This is great news especially for us olympus fans. Here's some sobering news out of florida. The manatees are under stress as of june fourth. This year. Seven hundred and eighty two manatees have died in two thousand twenty one alone and that's a one hundred and fifty one percent increase from the three hundred and thirty one that died during the same period last year to put this in perspective. The record number of deaths for manatees in a year is eight hundred. Twenty one or eight hundred and twenty four and that was in two thousand eighteen. This increase is so dramatic that representative vern buchanan from florida wrote a letter to the us fish and wildlife services to change their status from threatened to endanger and that's the highest level of protection here in the us. The florida manatee used to be on the endangered list until two thousand and seventeen when their numbers rose. Above six thousand six hundred they now estimate a census of about seventy five hundred but as we can see that number is going in the wrong direction. Now what's the cause food availability. The seagrass is being killed off by oversaturation of nutrients and the manatees simply. Starve to death. Not sure how a change in status will solve the sad scenario but we need to start someplace. Well it's summer. And i know that a lot of people like to catch up on summer reading while they're on vacation we'll scuba diving. Magazine just published a list of books that you might consider in their armchair adventure section. A couple of book stood out. One of them was in oceans deep courage innovation and adventure beneath the waves. And that's written by bill steve. And it's a history of our underwater presence. He covers submarines saturation diving and recreational gear. Bill also goes into the impacts of aro vs versus in-person exploration. You can pick up this book in ocean deep for about fifteen dollars in paperback. Now the second book is exploration deep ocean the first descent to the bottom of all five of the world's oceans and it's written by josh young. The book covers the exploits of victor scovill and his team on their history-making mission. Your Next Dive - Key Largo
"Last year my goal was to do a segment of your next dive where i featured key largo dive mecca here in the united states. I wanted to time this segment for just after we returned from key. Largo in april of two thousand and twenty. Well we all know how that turned out. We did not get there and again in two thousand and twenty one. We were not able to plan out an excursion as we would have hoped to. Two thousand and twenty two however is on the horizon. But i didn't wanna wait any longer to talk about key largo so here we go with your next dive where we travel to key largo florida. I think i've mentioned it before here on the podcast that my first is after getting a certification where with it's a dive located at the marriott hotel on the overland highway in key largo and it was fantastic. How about your first real dive being on a real historic wreck the city of washington a ship that was in havana harbor when the us main exploded and sank now. There are many reasons to choose key largo as your dive destination. Especially if you live in the eastern part of the united states first off. It's easy to get to. You can either fly into fort lauderdale. Which is my preferred airport. As i find it logistically navigate or miami which is a little closer to key Key largo you just hop in your rental car. That is if you can find one these days and head on down now. Let's talk a little bit about the dive. Operators in key largo as you can imagine being to dive. Mecca that it is. There are quite a number of operators to choose from it's a dive at the marriott is no longer operating but i will talk about two of the operators. I'm familiar with. They are horizon divers and rainbow reef now right after only a couple of months. After i did that first trip to key largo i returned and at that time. I drove with horizon divers back. Then they were located in marina at mile marker one hundred of the overseas highway and that was right next to the courtyard by marriott. Which at the time was a radison. It was very convenient to roll out of bed. Get a quick bite to eat and stroll over to the dive. Shot horizon has moved however and they are now located on the overseas highway at mile marker. One oh six. That's the dive shop in a retail store. Their boats are located about a half a mile up the road next to a place called shipwrecks oceanside now rainbow reef has taken over the old horizon diver facility at the mile marker one hundred marina additionally they also bought out ocean divers on the other side of the marina and have quite a large operation. Now the last time we were in key largo. We stayed at the courtyard and dove with horizon. We were going to go back to key. Largo in two thousand twenty and planned to die with rainbow reef. We didn't make it down there now. If you're looking to do more technical diving then. I think horizon divers maybe a better choice for the shallow reefs that i like rainbow reef might be a good option as they have those big forty six foot newton dive boats now. I have to admit that. I've never done the deeper wrecks down there like spiegel grove. Where the dwayne bid. But i love the shallow wrecks like the city of washington. The hanan bell. Also known as mike's wreck and especially the ben would. They are teeming with fish life and are great places to do fish identification and surveys. You can also experience of great dives on elbow reef molasses reef and french reef another great shallow dive through the book spurring grove. Karl is christ of the abyss. Dry rocks you can grit some great photo opportunities there. The water temperatures in key largo range from the mid seventies in the winter months to the mid eighties in the peak of the summer. When i dove in april of two thousand and nineteen. I was pretty comfortable on the shallow reefs with my three millimeter wetsuit. Only wanna do to morning dives. You can free up your afternoons for some topside adventures. A trip to reef headquarters Is interesting or you can take a tour of the coral restoration foundation and just down. The road is the history of diving museum in l. morada. I was really looking forward to getting to the museum last year and hope that i can make it down there next april. Talk about the dining. While if you're staying at the courtyard on the marina you don't have to get in your car and drive someplace you can just scroll stroll over skippers doc right on the marina. They have some great conch chowder. There and if you want a burger or some pub food than walk a little bit further down to dr sharpies shark bite grill. You'll probably run into some of the dive staff there hanging out now. Another great place to eat is the pilot house and that's located right near the coral restoration foundation very close by and and if you're in the mood for pizza then upper crust pizza at mile marker one zero one point six. Just make sure it's not. Wednesday is their closed. We made that mistake. So as i wrap up this segment. If you've been diving in key largo. I hope that you will agree that it is really a cool place to dive. And if you've never been there. I would encourage you to consider putting a trip there on your counter. I regret having taken fourteen years between visits. I'm not gonna make that mistake again.

"This is wet notes. Scuba shack radio's news and information update for sunday. June sixth two thousand and twenty. One first up. I like give you a quick update from stewart. Coves dive bahamas stewart. Coves has moved to new location. In coral harbour. Coral harbour used to be home of dive dive dive in nassau scuba center. Both are now gone. Stewart just moved to this new property in the last month and he has bought and he has big plans for the place right now. The main building is under significant renovation. So he has constructed some temporary structures to accommodate divers while things progress. I had a nice chat with stuart on his plans to build out the facility. And make it a great place to do your diving. When in nassau we are really looking forward to seeing how everything evolves move when we get back there next year. Good luck. According to an article in the came encompass an isolated area containing disease was spotted at life off a smith cove. And that's along the south west coast and that's not good. The came in department of environment also reported infected sites amal along grand cayman's east coast the now suspects that divers and boat operators be spreading it although scientists are still not exactly sure how stony coral tissue disease spreads. If you look at the outbreak map you get the feeling that it could be divers or boat. Operators there are new disinfecting guidelines for local divers. Not sure how these will translate to us when the caymans open back up again as if we didn't have enough to contend with with covid nineteen now it stony coral tissue disease and our dive gear every day. Now we're learning about more destinations for diving opening up around the world. One of these locations is bon air. There was an article on dive. News wire from the bon air tourism department. That indicated that. Us flights will resume. On june fifth and the country is launching an island-wide health initiative american and delta will be resuming their wednesday and saturday flights from miami and atlanta. Unlike the bahamas of it appears that you'll still need an antigen or pcr tests even if you are vaccinated before entry and of course for returning to the united states. It sounds like you might be able to get these tests at the airport or at three other facilities on the island so even though bonaire will open. Be sure you're properly prepared. Hopefully in the near future you'll be able to travel without restrictions if you're fully vaccinated and finally here on wet notes. I just saw that. Bob ballard has a new book out and it's titled into the deep and memoir from the man who found titanic a couple of years ago. We met doctor ballard at the sixty fifth boston. Sea rovers clinic and his presentation was fascinating. Some sure the book will be equally fascinating. There was an article on cnn where they interviewed bob allard. And according to this article the book delves into some of the most defining moments of his personal life including the tragic death of his son. Ballard turned seventy nine in june and he said that depend pandemic. He had a lot of times on his hands. So he teamed up with christopher drew the new york times who's an investigative journalists to write the book into the deep by robert. Ballard would be a good one to add to your summer reading list. The Invader -
"It's time for another installment of seahorn. It's still alive here on scuba shock radio and this time we're heading back to july thirtieth nineteen sixty for season three episode thirty titled the invader in this episode. Mike is on assignment to a small unnamed. Latin america country where his job is to train a new underwater demolition team in the opening underwater scenes. Mike is with two other divers and there are placing underwater charges. Mike says that in wartime the underwater soldier only has his blade and bundle of explosives. Well when the charges go off you see the divers being violently tossed about but they're okay. They were just far enough away from the concussion back on the boat. Mike tells us that he has started with twenty men but now he is down to their. Is thomas vegas a wealthy princeton graduate and paul ramirez better known as indio an orphan who is happy but can be serious as a barracuda but there is trouble ashore. The scene shifts to the office of the president day president they duran and he's being confronted by an opposition leader so scenario silvano who is calling for revolution against iran's tax bill. Mike confronts scenario storms out. Mike is worried about this little dictator but president duran assures in he was a soldier and all will be well now. We're back on the boat. Where mike still has his hands. Full with a rivalry between tomasz an indio underwater thomason indio get into a fight by training. Mike forces them to the surface. Thomas toes indio that if he kicks him again like that he'll cut his throat. Mike tells ended. They gotta learn to work together to now. Tomas asks to go sure to go on a date with dawn comes trouble. Speedboat approaches the argonaut with a colonel. Who tells them that. President duran has been abducted by solano and being held in an island. Four miles offshore. What can you do ask the kernel. We'll think of something. Mike replies give us until noon. And if you haven't heard from us by then you've never will. The next thing we see is tomasz on the radio and he is talking to survive at the fort. The revolutionary traitor to l. president. He tells them that there will be an underwater attack. Now as mike in dior getting ready their gear we see tomas sneaking a flare gun into his rig back underwater. The three divers are set for a long swim with patrol boats circling around. So mike takes the boys deep into the channel to create a diversion. Mike sends up a surface marker buoy with a time fused bomb on it when it goes off. The fort thinks it's a pto and savannah. Well that opens the door from mike to be called in by president day duran. Mike surprises silvano and tells them to call off the revolutionary. When he says no. Mike says he's a peaceful man but he won't hesitate to shoot him. He'll give him the five one two three okay. So von gives up and radio demand to stand down. Mike is florida the revolution and saved l. president day in the final scene. We see mike at the helm of his boat with a metal pin to his chest. His first from a foreign government indio ramirez is now the head of the country's coastal defense once again letter. Nimoy shows up on seahawks where he played indio. Where will Your Next Dive Be?
"It's time for another installment of your next dive here on scuba shack radio so far i have done eleven installments of this segment. Typically i do in new your next dive segment every third show or about every six weeks. I take a dive location or operator and talk a little bit more about the diving. The operator the boats the facilities and the food. I also like to discuss how best to get there. Well today. i thought i do a little bit. Something different maybe. That's because i'm not sure i have anymore. Cool places to talk about that. I've been to so. I'm going to imagine that we're in a post pandemic world and i could just pick some place to go diving jump on a plane and giant stride. In where would i go. where would you go well. I'm going to keep this in the context of the places. I've talked about here on your next dive in boy. Did i have a hard time trying to figure it out. But in the end if i could fly out today and go diving i would definitely had grand cayman and then head over to sunset house. There are so many other options to choose. I chose sunset house for a number of reasons. First getting down there from where i live in. Connecticut is pretty easy. And while i have to make a connection. It's no big deal and if you're lucky with the scheduled flights you might even be able to sneak in and afternoon shore dive. The the sure diving is definitely a big reason. I like sunset house. You can dive on the house reef anytime and it is outstanding house. We've you can explore for hours and find some really cool stuff boat diving takes you. Some fantastic spots and win diving is over. I love spending time at my bar for lunch or dinner. I can visualize myself right there right now. Having an iron show bach after a great day of diving boy. I gotta get there now. If i had a lot of time like say i was retired or like say later this year i would ski. Give serious consideration towards heading out to the philippines and then heading south to do magaji. Where'd stay with atlantis. Everything about the resort in a diving hits mark from me. The biodiversity is incredible. You get the reese with four hundred and fifty different species of coral and the mock where you can watch stuff closely. As as the sand comes alive it's outstanding. The rooms are very nice and spacious and the food is really good really good. The resort is right on the beach and a very relaxing environment. I would have to say that. It is one if not the best value in diving if i couldn't get into sunset house on grand cayman or have the time to make the long trek out to the philippines to other options. Come to mind. And they're a little bit different. I would consider either going to turks and caicos to dive dive provo or had two little came in and spend a week at little cayman beach. Resort going to turks and caicos on providential. He's just like flying to the bahamas pretty straightforward. But it's not as much diving as you would get on a little cayman. Typically you'll get five days of two tank boat diving but you'll have time to go to a number of really cool restaurants and there's that nice supermarket that's right across the street from where we stay. Then you get time to relax by the pool or the beach going to little cayman involves that short flight in a twin otter from grand cayman which sometimes presents a challenge but once at the resort get ready to dive in eat. You'll probably do six days of two tank morning dives with five days of one tank afternoon dies. That's totaling seventeen is a week or seventy percent more diving. Then you would get in turks and caicos and while you won't experience the different restaurants. You won't be disappointed in the food plan on adding a few pounds during the week. So this is quite a dilemma. That will face when we're able to and we're able to travel again and we feel comfortable with it. There are so many options out there. I know we're still trying to set up a memorial day trip to nassau with stuart cove and keeping our fingers crossed. We all have our favorite places to go diving our goto spots and we all have the places on our list of places we want to get to. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to diving some really cool places and love to go back to all them. That sounds like a goal. But if i had to choose my top four spots right now they would be sunset house on grand cayman atlanta's dive resorts and duma gatty dive provo on turks and caicos and little cayman beach resort out the passport. Cayman Brac Beach Resort
"I started the your next dive segment here on scuba Shack Radio a year ago as a way to talk about some of the great places to dive today is the 10th installment of your next dive off and we're going to complete our adventures in the Cayman Islands with a visit to Cayman BRAC where we'll stay at the Cayman BRAC Beach Resort and dive with Reef divers. As a recap we talked about the Little Cayman Beach Resort in episode 19, and then we went to Sunset house on Grand Cayman in episode 32. So let's explore the third island. My experience with the Cayman BRAC Beach Resort is a little dated. We had a shop trip their way back in October of 2006. So I'm guessing things maybe a little different job after fourteen years, but I'm also guessing a lot is probably the same. The Cayman BRAC Beach Resort is part of the clearly came and dive resorts that include Little Cayman Beach Resort and Cobalt Coast Resort on Grand Cayman off. This Collective of resorts is owned and operated by the Tibbetts family a prominent family in the Caymans since the Seventeen hundreds. First off Cayman BRAC is a little easier to get to than Little Cayman the Charles Kuykendahl International Airport located on the western end of the island package is very close to the beach resort and it has a Runway that's big enough to land 737 Jets. There are many more options to get to the Brock than the small twin otters flying the linkage came in plus the runway has lights so you don't have to worry that much about getting getting dark and that was an adventure we faced last year when going a little Cayman As I mentioned the airport is very close to the resort and you get picked up by The Resort staff for a short ride over. Now the resort has had some major Renovations since we were there several years ago. It sustained some significant damage from a hurricane. And from what I've read. It had to be almost completely built and it was finally finished in 2015. Today they offer 40 rooms. They're building is a two-story structure with all Beach and pool views with all the amenities you expect as for your meals. You have several options for different meal plans. I'm always up for the all-inclusive meals. I like not having to think about going out and finding a place to eat. That's not everybody's cup of tea. But if you do get the are inclusive me off and you won't be disappointed. Let's talk about the diving first. You'll be diving with Reef divers. It's the same operators as on Little Cayman. They tout themselves relay diving. They handle all the heavy lifting. Reef divers operates for Newton dive boats of 42 to 46 feet my favorite dive boat. They'd have big sister little sister ocean sister and coral sister. There are about in seventy named dive sites around the island and many of them are clustered around the Western end making for some short boat rides. Some folks feel like the diving isn't as good on the Brock or Grand Cayman as it is on Little Cayman for me. All three are fantastic and I would certainly not pass up an opportunity to dive Kathy Brock. Because it has been a while since I was there I went back to my log book to see where we drove. We did eighteen Dives on that trip. Now one of the things they do is a morning run off over the Little Cayman where you get to do two Dives on Bloody Bay wall. So you do get a little taste of the Little Cayman. I logged bottom temperatures for all the Dives at 86° Fahrenheit and that was in October and we routinely had dies between fifty to sixty minutes. We were able to talk to Dives on the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts the signature wreck our night dive was at a site called Elkhorn forest. And then we went back the next morning to dive the site during the day. That was pretty cool to see the difference. There isn't any shore diving from the Brock Beach Resort. But if you get the package like we did a 2018 Dodge is a pretty good week. Reading through the log book brought back some great memories and makes me want to go back. 31. Dive Flags, EN-ROADS climate solution simulator, diving the Andrea Doria - burst 02
"Many of us go on die vacations to exotic spots and do a majority of our diving from a boat. I did a piece on boat diving etiquette back in February. And you can check out the archives if you're interested one of the things we don't have to worry about when we were diving from a boat is having a die flag that all changes if we are sure diving. You'RE GONNA have to fly or carry your own die flag now. I I learned about die. Flags in my patty open water diver course like most of us have and we actually used a die flag when we were doing our certification dives at Fort Weather. All in Jamestown Rhode Island. Now I went back to my original open water manual to look at what they covered. Yeah I still have that manual. That was before we had the electronic learning. Now we're all familiar with the red rectangular flag that has the white diagonal stripe but remember. There's also blue and white double tailed pennant. Or Alpha flag that signifies diving operations now according to Patty. The flag must be large enough to be seen from at least one hundred yards or meters away so to give you some perspective. Think about this. You're standing on the goal line of a football field and that you're able to see and more importantly identify that flag placed on the other goal. Line I want to cover a couple of other things about your die. Flat your flag is supposed to be flying so do accomplish. This usually have a wire across the flag to keep it extending now. You GotTa make sure that that wire is in place and there are no rips or tears in the flag the might make go limp remember. You're on that far goal line and it's Kinda hard to pick out the flag if it's not flying also. The flag needs to be seen by any boats in the area and should be at least three feet above the surface. Now that's absolutely necessary. When there are choppy seas the laws in your area may have special requirements. So you're going to have to check them out on the distances etc. But if they don't you WanNa stay within fifty feet of your diet. Flag and boats are supposed to stay one hundred two hundred feet away from die flat. Now I can tell you from experience and seeing it. That doesn't always happen. Boats don't usually respect. Sometimes they don't respect that one hundred two hundred foot rule. The die flags pretty simple is usually has a float and nears. This poll that goes through the middle of it runs through the the float and it usually has a counterweight on the bottom to keep the pole upright. Now you also have a line attached to it. That usually seventy five hundred feet normally polypropylene wrapped around the holder. Like I said it's pretty simple until you get into water you have to practice holding it leading out the line keeping the float above you not trailing way behind pulling the float underwater or getting tangled up in the line of another die flag or your gear. We've seen it all at our open waters in Jamestown. Also remember you need to hang onto your holder. We've seen that to die. Flags get away from people. Remember die. Flags are another important piece of your safety equipment and it's only safe. You know how to use it. So when you're on your shore dive be cognizant of what you're doing with that die flag practice with it and be safe with it.
