The Eric Metaxas Show
A highlight from Ricky Skaggs (Encore)
"Welcome to The Eric Metaxas Show with your host, Eric Metaxas. Sometimes you have the privilege of having a guest on the program who really is what we call a legend. And I never would say this if he were here because I wouldn't want to embarrass him, but the person that I'm going to interview in a couple of seconds, some of you know all about him. If you don't, you will very soon. His name is Ricky Skaggs. He is a legend in the music industry. He has 15 Grammy Awards in 1982. He was the youngest member ever at that time to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. When he was six years old, the father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, picked this six -year -old out and said, would you play for us? He went on to become a seven -year -old playing with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. There's videotape of it. In 1971, when he was still extremely young, teenager, went off to play with Ralph Stanley in his band. By about 1980, country legend Chet Atkins credited him, my guest Ricky Skaggs, with saving country music. Have you heard enough? He has played, performed, produced with Barry Gibb. Emmylou Harris in the 70s produced Dolly Parton, worked with Bruce Hornsby in the Amana Radar range. In 2021, the President of the United States gave him the National Medal of Arts. Again, I wouldn't say this if he was here in the studio, but he is a legend. And I'm very embarrassed to say I think he's right here in the studio. I never would have said this, Ricky, if I knew you were sitting here. Ricky, my new friend, welcome. It's great to be here, Eric. I was sitting there listening to you make all these nice things, and we could be talking about all kinds of other things. So anyway, I appreciate it, and you're a man of honor. I made a lot of this stuff up. I just want my audience to know this couldn't be true. So I'll have to live up to the things that you said. When you were six years old, now, you know, you're in your late 60s now. So when you were six years old, which would put us back about 1960, you played with Bill Monroe. That is very hard to comprehend. I know my dad bought me a mandolin when I was five. And so I learned, you know, why do you do that? I had been singing in church with him and mom since I was like three years old. And this is in old Kentucky. In Kentucky, and we would sing songs together at home. And then when we go to church, we'd get up and they would set me, literally set me on the pulpit, and I would sing harmony with mom and dad. They would set you on the pulpit. Yeah. See, up here, we'd say, put you up on the pulpit. But down there, they would set you on the pulpit. That sounds better. That sounds more American. But you, the reason I'm saying this is you obviously at that time already had a gift for harmonizing. You could hear and sing. And so they knew that they needed to encourage you. So your dad at age five gets you a mandolin. And already at age six, Bill Monroe is taking notice of you. Well, mom and dad and I would play at church, like I said. And then dad and I would go to this little local grocery store there in Blaine, Kentucky, and they would set me up on the pop case, you know, that had that. So it wasn't a pulpit. It was the pop case. That's the marketplace version. Right. Yeah. So I was getting I was getting my teeth ready for the marketplace back then. But I would sit and play and sing and people would want to get a Coke. So I'd have to scoot over and they, you know, it was a double door. And look, you were so cute. I saw the video of you I saw with flat and scrubs, which people can look up on YouTube. But I mean, you were so darn cute at age seven. And when he says, what's your name? You say, Ricky Skaggs. It's so cute. It's unbelievably cute. But even cuter is the song you sing. Because for a seven year old to sing a song about a broken heart and a woman who left me is funny. Yeah, I didn't understand those things back then. I just liked the song and the song was Ruby. Are you mad at your man? Ruby. Oh, Ruby. I mean, to hear you mad at your man and the 70 year old singing it while he's playing. And that's what I sung with the Bill Monroe thing. You know, it was a hit. Are you mad at your man? You know, the neighbors in the hood at this little high school for Bill Monroe was playing. And you know, they started shouting out after half hour, Mr. Monroe's set. They started shouting out, let little Ricky Skaggs get up and sing, you know. And my dad didn't plant these people, I promise you, you know. And anyway, I didn't even take a mandolin with me. So the irony of the whole thing is that I had to play this size mandolin. You had to play. I had to play his mandolin. You played Bill Monroe's mandolin when you were six years old? Six years old. And I, you know. Not many people can say that. He took the strap around and, you know, wrapped it around the curl here so that it would fit me. Right. Set it on me. And I said, you know, they said, what do you want to do? And I said, Ruby. And so it was a popular song by the Osborne brothers, Bob and Sonny Osborne. And so away we went, you know, and you know, no mistakes, no, you know, I didn't flip out, didn't faint or anything, fall on the floor, didn't drop his mandolin. Well, you were too young to be self -conscious, probably. Yeah, I didn't know what that was, you know. If you were 11, you would have just freaked out. I probably would have. But he sent me back off stage and then did his big famous Mule Skinner Blues just to rat me, show me up. No, I don't know that for sure. But I just, you know, the crazy thing about that is when I became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, they wanted me to take out of the, they got some, some instruments in a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum called the Precious Jewels. They have Earl Scruggs' banjo. They have Maybelle Carter's famous archtop. What? They still have that? Yeah. They have Bill Monroe's F5 mandolin in the case, so they took it out for me. Do they have Mother Maybelle's tortoiseshell combs? Maybe. I'm just kidding. But I mean, who knew that? Unless you're sitting here, I wouldn't know that they would have these objects. These are like sacred relics. But they let me play that same mandolin that I played when I was six years old. He kept that mandolin all his life. He got it in 1945, found it in a barber shop in Miami, Florida. Of all places, you know, to be in Miami, Florida, walking the streets, just out walking around, and happened to look in a barber shop with thousands of barber shops in Miami, Florida. So Bill Monroe found it in 1945. And went in and bought it for $200. And used it for the 15 years until he met you. Then he lets you play it. He keeps playing it, and today it still exists. Yeah, it does. And was busted up, and still, you know, Gibson put it back together meticulously. But it's amazing. And it just brought back so many memories. It almost closed a door, or closed a season of my life, you know, to play that mandolin at six years old, and then get to play it again, going into the most famous, you know. When did they induct you into the Country Music Hall of Fame? 2018. So they waited way too long. Shame on you. No, it's almost funny to me, because it is, you know, you, listen, if in 1980, Chet Atkins, the legend, you know, credits you with saving country music from the commercialization that it was undergoing because of the urban cowboy fad and John Travolta hiss. But it's just kind of funny to me, because you've been in this world, you know, forever. The idea that you were playing with Ralph Stanley, when you were just a kid, what was it, 1971, so you're like 17, were you still in high school? I mean, you're still in high school. Yeah. Did you graduate? No, I wanted to go to the Stanley School of Music, so I wanted to stay. We started, Keith Whitley and I started when we were 16, and played the summer with Ralph, and then we had to go back to school, and, you know, Ralph wanted us to go get our education, and I thought, man, this is the education I want right here, you know. I think a lot of people understand. Folks, I'm talking, in case you're just tuning in, this is Ricky Skaggs sitting here, we will continue the conversation on all kinds of subjects, don't go away.

'Son of a Sinner' Jelly Roll reigns at CMT Music Awards show
"The CMT music awards were held Sunday Night in Nashville, Tennessee? The big winner of the night was rapper turned country singer jelly roll, who won three awards, including the male video of the year. I hope y'all give me a second here. I'm a little emotional. I started drinking. I didn't think I was gonna win again. But the show started off with a somber tone, as co host Kelsey ballerini read the names of those killed in last Monday's school shooting in Nashville. Three, 9 year olds, Evelyn dec house, William Kinney, and Halle scruggs. Other award winners, 5 time Grammy winner Shania Twain was given the equal pay award, co host Kane Brown and his wife Caitlin took home video of the year for their duet, thank God. I'm Donna water

How Should We Identify the Nashville Shooter?
"We have. A very interesting sort of smoking gun problem in the mainstream media, which is the left wing media there. Synonymous. How do you identify the shooter in a Nashville, this monstrous murderer who murdered three children and three adults, I believe that is the number. Children three children ages 8 and 9 and three adults. At a Christian school, the covenant school for the record the children were Evelyn, deke house, Halle scruggs, and William Kinney. The adults were Cynthia peak, Catherine coons, and Mike hill. 61 60 61, children 8 and 9. I think the murderer was 26 years old. I'll verify that for you. So we have here a female who identifies as a male, so in the current parlance that's trans male. If you watch the mainstream media or read the mainstream media or listen to them, it was very difficult to ascertain that. Because in their articles, the many of them did not even use a pronoun. This is very difficult when you describe somebody who is the subject of your story. So do you say she took the gun or she got the gun illegally, she got there in a stolen car, she got there, or he got there.

"Our listeners in the Dallas Fort Worth area know of pasture scruggs. He had ties to north Texas before. He and his family moved to Nashville. And this post really touched my heart. There's a picture of the pastor with his daughter Halle. And the caption says this. This is pastor Chad scruggs and his daughter Halle scruggs. Halle was brutally massacred along with three of her classmates at a Christian school in Nashville. This is a spiritual battle. The greatest weapon we have in a spiritual battle is prayer. Take a heartfelt moment today to pray for this morning scruggs family and for an end to demonic evil in our country. My heart breaks for this family and for our broken nation. But in times like these, I find prayer to be the most potent, so pray. Then pray again, we know how this story ends. Good will win and God will triumph over evil. Stay close to God. Isn't that a beautiful message?

I had opportunity when. I put my book together. I had an opportunity view coach. John robinson and he's from here in san diego and he was famous coach that led usc to their championships for years. The players watch the tape. Why did they watch tate. And he said amy. He said. We teach the game from the tape. The players aren't even allowed onto the field until they learn it from the tape. Watching the tape creates champions and it's no different in our business when we go back and watch ourselves be willing to evaluate as somebody else to help get a coach you know. Get a couch if you need to. Anyone that specializes to say. If i really wanna hit this go on. I'm passionate about what i'm doing. Why would i leave this category unattended and put it in the closet. I just don't wanna look at it. We have to look at it or your message isn't going to be received. You're not going to be that person on tv or on your social media. Wise everybody swiping. Why doesn't anybody engage. Who because you had twenty five filler words before you got to the first sentence unlike. Yeah so no. We're not engaging it takes work just like anything else it takes. It takes work. It takes a commitment to that work. And i think so much of what holds people up is the vanity metrics of the likes of. How many views did it get. One had ten million views this at eighty million views. Will i want that well even if you have that. That is only done one thing for one business. What do you want your building. A sustainable business into the future. So you need to know what's the craft behind. How did i get to the eighty million. It wasn't that one video. It's how do i make that next video tomorrow. With the dribble, kicks it out the false drugs. 10 on the shot, clock struck dribbles left, smiling back out, told him. He launches the three and it is no good rebound taken by the butler Bulldogs. And he brings it across the timeline himself of 6 ft. Seven Alley drives under the bucket. Reverse lamp leaves it short. Brian Griffin might got a piece of that one. The defense by Brian Griffin playing defense without fouling Paul Scruggs, Top of the key accelerates left side of the lane totem elbow jumper on the way from 15 that is no good rebound battle for Griffin called for a foul over the back. It'll be. The fourth team found the Musketeers. His half brother has been called for six the same musketeers with the lead of 33 to 21 with 4 27 to go. First half. Hey, go figure House Musketeers. Only the third game played in January. They had the last four games canceled. It's been what 19 days since they played a basketball game. Have been practicing since Saturday. So the Musketeers came out pretty sharp practice might have done him. Well. I expected him to be a lot more rusty, but no, I'm not a bad half so far. Drive into the pain. We've got bodies phone with potential charge. I think they're gonna call block on a musketeer. Is the charge would have been taken in the restricted zone. It's gonna be on Kunkle. Carter was trying to take charge and Uncle also bumps Thompson on the way to the bucket. The drive originate on the left side. You got to realize Aaron Thompson wants to get to the bucket. He does not want to shoot outside, and she blushed. The three drive to the free throw line, kicks it back outside the Hodges and you then posted post up catches. It drives.

Hodges in the game here, Seeing his first action of the season at the free throw line fees it Bryce Golden inside left hand lamp was no good, but he's heavily found by a musketeer. He'll be at the line to shoot two time Butler got the ball to the middle of the floor. Had Xavier kind of spread out a little bit. Nice jump past by Bo Hodges. The ball got Bryce Gold, the ball right underneath the bucket, where he's a low Personal foul was on Paul's drugs. That's his first of the ballgame. Bryce Golden at the free throw line of 71% free throw shooter. Makes the first He's coming off a ball game where he had 53 pointers. Yeah, he's only six for 25 on the year from behind the arc, Joseph going into that game. He was like one for 19. So you look like Hey, Go ahead. Shoot. Anytime you want, made five up in that game, scored 19 points. He makes both free throws here. Xavier leads 10 to 6. Speech here is bringing the ball across the time line. Paul Scruggs, top of the key to Kunkle, come behind the screen at the top of the key Fremantle. He don't much use. The three frustrate away. Barely hits in front of them falls to the floor off the bounce. The rebound is taken by Bo Hodges. He brings it across the timeline. Drives the right side of link banks it off the glass. No good rebound taken by Jason Carter for the Musketeers. Johnson brings it across the timeline bounces it towards the left corner to Paul Scrubs, but it's kicked out of bounds by Give me your bolt. Don't go back to that jump shot by, uh That Freeman or is that exactly? That basketball home barely hit the rim, and it almost felt like it slipped out of his hands. Zach has gotta play with more confidence over the last two games. Only averaging 11 points a game over three from behind the arc and those last two games, one of them on before for the Musketeers into the corner. Right side. Scruggs watch the three dribbles into the lane back. Out near the top of the key. Bounces it down the right sideline to Fremantle, banging his way in against Bo Hodges turns baseline throws up a hook shot leaves it short. No good rebound, bouncing around at the free throw line. Words picked off the bounce by Bryce Gold for the Butler Bulldogs. Take it across the timeline bounces it down them to Bryce Golden. He turns and scores misses the layup inside, tapped up. No good rebound on the floor, picked up by the Musketeers. Johnson across the time line left side of the floor. What was the dribble? Xavier sets up their offense. Hold him with it Takes it towards the right sideline back to the top of the key with the pastor Carter. Hands it off the Paul Scruggs. He launches a three point shot. Gun it pull Scruggs. Nice play by Paul Scrubs. Joey went behind that screen act like he was going to pass it. They played off of him. He has a room he knocked down. His first three point of the ball game only has eight points to the ballgame. Xavier leaves 13 to 6 with 15 11 to play in the first half of the hajj is working on the right side of the floor dribbles to the elbow pulls up for a 15 footer. "Let it fly and hits it. Xavier leads by 1 74 73 with 730.1 2nd to play. You know, it was a remarkable play that goes back to the time out. Because Ava had made a decision by and we talked about it to pull out Cobi Jones. They brought in Brian conquering Great three point shooter and during the time out after the discussion among the coaches, they bring the freshman back into the ballgame. Cobi Jones for Carter. So Xavier and you had suggested maybe they go small. With the guards, and it did give me ability for Kunkle to drive the lane. He leapt into the air on left, Elaine, I was certain he was going to shoot. You could probably hear that. But it wouldn't do to drew the defense. I'd like to talk to him to see if he changed his mind. The whole mid mid air, But that drew the defense. He fired a pass deep into the right corner. And Scruggs. I thought he'd shoot it, too. And then he affected and drew the baseline. And when he was driving the baseline looked ingested to me and he but he knew what he was doing. I didn't see Jones may be wide open the top of the key. Maybe you did. I thought Scrubs might be a little bit of trouble. But he fired a beautiful pass out right into the shooting pocket of Cobi Jones, who is ready to catch it and shoot it, And it was nothing but net when you have experienced players, Joe At the end of the game. Those kind of those players make those kind of plays, and it was their great decisions multiple times throughout that play for Michael Corporation, Arbor Day Foundation. "Uncle and Nate Johnson on the wings on that Paul Scruggs kind of initiate the offense. Exact Freeman all kind of hanging around with top around the free throw line with Jason Carter crashing the offense of glass Now you want to go with about 17 16. Like two seconds to go on the shot on the clock on the game clock. You don't want to go to early. You don't want to score too early. So you want to go around the 7th 2nd mark that you attacked. So you have time. Get a shot up and possibly an offensive rebound if you miss it, But I think David unnecessarily go for the win here. You just go with what shot presents itself. If if Providence over plays on the perimeter, you go all the way to the rim and score If they don't you got enough confidence scores. Knocked down three pointers, especially Adam Kunkle. It looks like Uncle came in for Colby Jones. But looks like Kobe Jones is being reinserted in the ball game. Perhaps for Carter. We'll have to see when they break the huddle. So maybe the musketeers going with more guards right now? Yeah, they've got Concord. Well, they've got Cobi Jones out there, Joe for his ability to put it on the deck and find open teammates. So Xavier does have covered Jones, Fremantle, Scruggs, Kunkel and Johnson and they will inbounds the ball. I'll have to go the length of the court 16.2 seconds to go here looks like Jones and take it out and will inbound Paul Scrubs. It looks like some full court pressure. Man to man variety be employed by Providence is they set it up now, not much pressure on the ball into Paul's drugs along the sideline. He backs off crosses the timeline with 13 seconds on the game clock takes the left side of the floor. Top of the key to Fremantle. Hands it to couple drives down the lane. Hang shoots kicks to the corner, all scrubbed with the fakes. Top of the key shot clock down to two game shots shots on the way and it's goodbye. Cobi Jones TV leads 74 73 with 730.1 2nd to play Ice in his veins. Cobi Jones. Knock down the three as if it ain't nothing but a thing. Multiple Fakes and drives on that play started with uncle weaving his way down the left side of the floor. I thought he'd shoot it. It was kicked out to the corner drive by Scruggs, then at the top of the key to the freshman Cobi Jones, who was open for the three. Let it fly and hits it. And Xavier leads by 1 74 73 with 730.1 2nd to play. The officials over reviewing the shot, perhaps to see if it's a three or two pointer, But he is well behind the three point line. And as the ball goes through the rim, there was 3.0.2 seconds to play. They might be looking to see how much time they can put back on the clock. You're talking tents. The second right now, Joe. How about the past by Paul Scruggs the pump fake to get to the basket and they kick it out. Cobi Jones for the three. How about the coaching move toe? Pull Jason Carter out of the game and toe insert. Cobi Jones, who knocks in What possibly could be the game winner. There's 0.1 2nd here, so this ball have to be tapped. Cultural will throw with the length of the floor for Providence. It's gonna be a baseball pants is tossed and thrown and it's off the backboard and that's the ball game. Xavier knocks up Providence by one 74 73 in amazing fashion is the freshman Colby Jones hits a three point shot after multiple maneuvers by Kung fu on Paul Scruggs to set up the assist at the top of the key at the left point, and I'm going to say the play the game is the fact that they took Cobi Jones out of the game. Work uncle during the time out here for the coaches assemble and talked. They brought Cobi Jones back onto the floor, taking out Jason Carter to go with the perimeter players. Multiple guards, The guards were able to penetrate first down the left side of the lane, then along the right baseline, finally kicking it out to another guard who nailed the three point shot. Brilliant coaching move. Uh, Managing your personnel and Travis Steele and his coaching staff did a tremendous job. I believe all game Fighting through some adversities. Some turnovers in the second half. Just dialing dialing up the right place. The right personnel at the right time to get the big win for the Musketeers Musketeers are now 10 or two on the season three and two in the Big East. The Friars are now seven. Five on the season three and three and Big East Plague and the final score. The Xavier Musketeers 74 The Providence Friars. 73 barrel go here in a minute. "By Fremantle that creates enough chaos to create a foul situations. They will get the ball back. Excellent effort there, right. Jason Carter back his way in out Cobi Jones. He tries to pass. The ball was not loose and Scruggs trying to recover it picks up a foul. It looked as if Jones had wanted to make a pass at midway through the most and changed his mind because he knew would be intercepted is it was it was knocked out of his hands and it's a turnover and Xavier picks up a foul on Paul Scruggs. Both these teams Joe really good with Great athletes, and they have quick hands so you can't stare down passes. If you do the chances are that past gonna be deflected. We're tired of 39 17 23 to play second half. Watch him with the ball at the free throw line gives it up. The right side of the free throw line to reach Providence running their flex offense all close to the basket breed with the basketball shot clock at seven. Back out. Top of the key done. One dribble, fires a 15 footer under great pressure from scrubs, and it's short, the ball bounces out the Paul Scrubs. Runs brings it across the timeline behind the back maneuver and bounces that past Freeman or was it deflected? Her kicked. That ball was kicked by David Duke says they was gonna keep iron ball underneath the basket. Near Xavier's bench. 23 on the shot clock for the Musketeers, eh? One bound Along the baseline right side of the bucket. After the top of the key to Johnson. He catches launches the three and he's ripping the cords from deep and inbounds pass from the right side to the left point deep to several steps behind the three point line it Nate Johnson didn't hesitate. He got it. It is these and let it fly and Xavier leads 42 to 39. That's the Nate Johnson that Xavier's used to seeing the guys lead in the Big East and three point perfect three point field goal percentage favorite. A man a man Reeves catches and shoots. That's off the front of the rim rebound, taking the free throw line by Carter. Get it across the timeline. Paul Scruggs left pointer to Johnson threes in the air again, and it's off the front iron. No good race for the top of the key. One by the Musketeers. Freshman Jones he drives bounces tries to pass into the baseline that's deflected away was intended for Carter Providence with the basketball Duke, driving hard by his man lays it up and in for two He can score everywhere. He's he really is good, like the way dish with his size, and his versatility could play forward or guard pass from Scruggs, intended for Carter through the zone is knocked out of the year picked off by Providence. "Support a local business and environment is It is a ball club, just 59 of 209 for 29% from three point range on the season, however, in this ball game Scored nine points all on three pointers so far. Yeah, with a tip. Look, you make five again. So if you're Travis still saying, Hey, man, there, they're over half of what they normally make. So just Stay in your defense, realizing that when you play zone, you're gonna have to swallow some threes. I mean, that's just kind of part of it. Maybe Xavier went to it a little sooner than They probably should have but pay. Nonetheless, I think Xavier should just continue to keep changing up defense's and give them a little a steady diet of not a steady diet of any one particular type of defense. See there, man the man or zone, but just just mix it up a little bit more frequently against the team. That's Got their rhythm from the outside Providence, three of seven overall from the field three of four from three point range. Xavier to a 3101 from three point range, invented the basketball province along the left baseline Xavier Toe. Like maybe a man to man defense on the ball inbounded watching. He's picked up by Carter in a double dribble by watching that'll be a turnover, says a girl. Get the ball back. Wanna hold him in the game now for Xavier, so Autumn scrubs Cobi Jones, Freemantle and Carter. Are the five with the X Men go to play 28 minutes in the victory over ST John Scrubs with the ball high on the left side of the floor, hold the ball waist high bounces it top of the key to Carter, right back to Scruggs cripples and inside the top of the key now bounces with Carter left to the lane. Gonna pound his way in terms of shoes from 5 Ft. Away, rolls it across the room. No good rebound, taking my providence tough shot for Jason there. David Duke, with the rebound, tossed his left side. Nichols wide open for three lets it fly heavy off the iron, and it hits the back iron and hops over the Backboard and that will be out of bands will be saviors ball. Travis, nine, Xavier seven. Travis still would love the nickels to keep on taking that shot. Now he's only 20% On the year he came in shooting like two for 10. And that's another early three that he took. He made his first one. But if Xavier can bait province into taking those kind of shots, they'll play right into deep. The sabers defensive, um, preference, Providence said time showing three quarter court pressure back into his own now Sacred works the ball around his own left side of the force of Paul's grown back out top. Approach and his respect amongst his teammates to be voted a captain and Jason Carter. He's an experienced senior. You know, he, you know he's been kind of a stabilizing force for the Musketeers. "I asked all of you to pick five of your most reliable movies even as I'm here now. I'm thinking of other movies that I would have put on my list to Adam do you want to kick us off with one of yours absolutely? My number five is more of a movie. Batman begins and for me. That's because it has a four x structure James Unconventional. It basically created the modern superhero movie. It was the one that I think we all wanted and they finally figured out how to make it. And there's really no downtime. There's a little bit once once. The Second Act ends Bruce's coming back from being a Ninja. There's a little bit of time but even then it just keeps going well. I think that's part of it too. It feels like the movies constantly restarting like. It doesn't lose the momentum that you got from the last thing. But if almost feels like buster scruggs like it's like and now a news story in this world you love except that it it still builds on the stakes of the previous one. So yeah you have the beginning and you have what you have him going going here. It's Ninja Studies. But then flashback of him as a kid. Yeah and then but then it goes then it goes all right now. He's back in Gothenburg. There's more to this than just him being Ninja. It's him in Gotha somewhere between forty five minutes. An hour between forty five minutes in an hour until he becomes Batman Which is the that is. The best way of doing every other version has been high and Michael Keaton. I'll be Batman today. I hope you enjoy the film kids and then it just there. It's interesting that you liked that because I feel like mostly my gripe with a lot of Origin movies is. Oh you're it's the wait to get to that point and you're like just have them be it already. I think is Batman begins it so well and it had not been done before other than you got taste of like in the animated series and. I think it was like fracturing. This is on the tip of everyone's talking about if you if you just did a few things man and then they'd knocked it out of the park and it was. It's so damn good. I think that that's like probably the one Batman movie other than the dark night but dark knight even a watch. Jerry the Was He the joker parts. But like Batman begins. I love from beginning to end. See I know. I've definitely seen dark knight more than I've Seen Batman begins. I saw dark knight three times in the theater rich but I understand the news. Twelve years ago cheaper. Whereas Batman begins is like like you know these restarts again and again and it's way easier to be like I'm just GonNa Throw Him Batman begins and watch it. Yeah and infielder and tear to your point at least taking awhile. I think probably because audiences were ready for this. It's more satisfying when you get to Batman instead of just getting right away like you learned to appreciate it like you go. Oh this journey because remember. He's talked about buying definitely easy to put a Christmas movie on like a Rewatch ables list of because you have the opportunity every year to have those feelings and this is my number one holiday. Christmas rewatch -able movie. I watch it every year. I made you guys all watch it and put it. I bought it on Amazon Prime. Tell me lousy with the movie watcher itself. Oh thank you you never said the movement. Sorry I have eyeballs. Oh a lot of lead up and then you're GONNA build fit. I thought it was building to James. Caan you're a big fan of and the actor who played the kid overall favorite movies. Now I love it so much. Because it's it's that feel-good movie I mean it's a holiday movie so that's like Bilton but it's just really funny Yeah Yeah it's a great holiday comedy. I I remember walking away from this movie and being like I like the two thirds of it and it's charming guy. That's and that's why we're lucky that we have a will. Ferrell holiday movie. That isn't Daddy's home. Two good that we have this they were GONNA call that. Daddy's homer Yeah L. Flake. I think you hit the nail on the head with Chris Movies They. They need to be engineered for that. Yeah because that's the sign of a good lasting. Chris movie like home alone. I've seen more times than I can say to. The it's Christmas story marathon. I was GONNA say as long as it's better than a Christmas story and kids have to grow up watching that anymore. Oh God yeah. So here's the I think the interesting thing about a Christmas movie is that it should be about more than just. Christmas is like hard about Christmas. But it's about way more than just Christmas. Yeah like family. You kinda reunited so it's it's a from a different time when you could. You could mock little people. Yeah well That man went on to be tearing Lancaster. And what have you done with your life me not a lot not a lot. James. You hit the nail on the head with twenty years. I've seen this movie a billion fucking times gladiator. Yeah Wow yeah well. It's because there are lots of obviously we could see the movie. Certain people were putting in and stuff like that but I was like. I was like well action movies. Sometimes there's an action movie that you can watch and of course there's dumb ones like you can put any dumb silly action. Movie that's digestible on there. But gladiators like an epic and I couldn't imagine watching an epic scale movie historical epic type movie like this over and over again but gladiator. I have like I remember. I was in a Latin class in high school and the teacher didn't care at all about teaching and would be like We're GONNA watch gladiator. Nice it's like we're gonNA teach you about gladiator classes and long enough to watch all gladiator. Come back the next time says. When do we stop and then you go? I think it was what he was fighting the goals. Which is like the first fifteen minutes of the movie go? Okay you'd start there wouldn't finish and then you'd you'd end up watching gladiator again and again. I watch gladiator in two different classes in high school. That's pretty good But yeah it's just like I just think it's so digestible when you think about some of the other movies in this genre it's like exodus gods and kings and like like these big scale historical drama pieces and stuff just didn't none of them. None of them are is fun is gladiator is in my opinion. It's a dense movie. It's also covers a lot of ground here. there's not a lot of misunderstandings two and half hours pilates two and a half hours but like kind of like we're saying about some of those other movies it like has several start. It's like okay. Well there's the beginning part of the movie Where he's he's soldier but then there's the part where he's training and then there's the part where he's leaving rebellion and like it so there's all these like restarts and stuff. Yeah I honest I still think this is one of walking penises best performances and I feel like it's a role that you would never see him again. Oh Yeah Russell. Crowe no keep Russell Crowe. I'll never liked this ever again. Heartthrob Sexy Action Lead Caesar Cut. I've never seen this movie. It's real good yeah. He didn't joy in a lot is like I'm going to say that a lot about some of the films early. It's okay I mean if you ever wondered we're doomed got his mask from. You should watch glad I will watch a lot of these movies. I'm sure but yeah no. I Love Gladiator. It's pretty it's weird because it was one of one best picture and like people in hindsight were like really gladiator. And I'm like yeah because it's just because it's like a popcorn action movie doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the acclaim. It

Kathy Bates discusses her Oscar nominated movie 'Richard Jewell'
"This is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and there's a great movie for you to see right now called Richard Jewel based on a true story but my guest today Kathy Athey Bates who you know from so many things I could mention them but then the show would be over because she has too many credits too many awards but she plays the title character's actors mother in this and she will break your heart six ways from Sunday. But today we're GonNa be having fun are absolutely welcome to the first time you've done done. This popcorns yours get no no. I've lost sixty pounds in managed to keep it off the last three or so I've been on. They sell popcorn pretty okay at least and we're smelling as Peter Stocks. The top doing this so you just got of course all the awards you have. Now you have a new nomination as best supporting actress for Richard Jewel for me. Ah The best award for this movie has been the fact that bobby jewel richards mom who's still alive Loves the movie. Because if she didn't now I know Gosh 'cause in the movie you know how she got Tom Brokaw. I know I know I know. We don't want her to be getting mad. Now you know and also You know there have been Statues in Centennial Park and young and Billy Payne who brought the Olympics to Atlanta. And finally there's going to be a a plaque with Richard's name and what did he say. Oh well that's a good thing should set that up or you should. Why should I work really really? Yeah that's it no Richard Jewel. That's the name of the movie. Clint Eastwood directed at but a true story. Can you tell us a little about Richard J. Just absolutely Richard had been a cop for a few years and then resigned or was fired depending on how you look at it. And then he we went to become a guard at at A college nearby and he got leftover the the thing with Richard that I found so tragic about this whole story story is that he was this hyper vigilant person. Ever since he was a kid at nine of the police the police even as a kid eight in church he wanted to help people And even in Turkey would run around and make sure everybody had a program and then later on when he was a cop he carried like one one hundred thirty pound you know battering Ram but he also had beanie babies for the kids who he might find who had been in accidents so he could give him he was is just this generous simple humble kind man who wanted to help everybody and it was that vigilance that Helped him in his job. He was hired to be a security guy for the Olympics. They were calling everybody in and he was at the sound and light tower and and he'd gone off to the restroom and he came back and there was a bench there and he noticed right away there was what they call an Alice. Pack this big military pack the officious very suspicious and so he told the sit idle like that and they say oh. Come on Richard he said no no I have a bad feeling and they so they brought in the bomb guys and he described it that the the guy went underneath and looked at it and then he just froze and he just back very slowly out and he told his buddy to turn turn a cell phone off and they tried to get everybody back as many people back but through a series of mishaps and nine one one calls and not being able to get in touch touch with people Eric Rudolph who actually planted the bomb and was not caught until like six years later Had this phone message You know there's going to be a bomb in Centennial Park in thirty minutes and thanks to Richard got all that is out of the tower. He was running up and down with doing everything everything a hand and suddenly he became this hero in and then for three days three days and his mother was all got that three day. Yeah my mom his his mom he's on TV. He's bets right he's on. TV is the hero of the day if CNN wanted to talk to him and what turned out was there was a leak from the FBI to Cathy scruggs at the Atlanta Journal Constitution and they decided to break the story and overnight they everybody turned against him and said he was the he was the guy he exempts Mama Except Momma. She was there for him she was they were very very close. She had two miscarriages ages and Richard was her only child and Both his real dad and his step step dad banished from their lives for various. The reasons and So he was her child her boy you know and she knows she knows how he can be be overzealous knows the things that he shouldn't be doing. You trust the police so much too much that it cost him by they use. This is what was so cruel colon. I remember when I started out working with Clint. We were all there to meet with him and I said why do you want to do this movie. And he said because I think it's an American tragedy and he said this is a story that people need to see Jon Hamm was down in Atlanta and people said well what are you doing down here. And he said Oh it's about the bombing and Oh yeah that guy. Richard Jewell who was the bomber summer. Because there's some suspicion and for eight days without any evidence People camped out you know media the FBI suspected in even when they brought him in for his first interview they already had a cell for him. Yeah we like him for this. That's what they always say. Yeah because the public. Everybody's demanding to know who did this. There's that desire. Why are to get somebody up there and say he did it well? There were millions and millions of dollars resting on this because of the Olympics and they had to get it sorted say it's nineteen ninety-six on this is happening so we weren't even in the big cellphone period of the everything was just taking off and don't forget we'd had waco the Federal Building we had Ruby Ridge. We had ninety three Truck Bombing World Trade Center so it was the beginning of the new normal ordinarily of this terrorism. And and it's that going. That's that seesaw. From we love you to stay away from us. I think that the real tragedy and I'm sure that this is what bobby default is that the very quality that enabled him to find that bomb his vigilance. They turn that into a liability And they beat him up with it that to me I think is just the tragedy of all. We'll one amazing scene that you have among renting in this is when bobby went on national. TV making a plea to President Clinton at the time yes to see what's happening and do something for some. Yes so let's look a little bit attack okay. My son is innocent. Richard is not the Olympic the big park bomber. He saved people's lives. Please hear me Mr President and help me. My son is a hero. If they do not intend to charge my son. You please tell us. Please tell the world Mr President. Please clear heartbreaking. Breaking it is is really is. I don't know how many times you had to do that. Well actually we got it in the first take. That's so clint into eastwood is fresh and real. Whenever I've been on a set of this it's always let's move on now but you know people say that the do said I J do when you're always think it's going to be quick but it's not that he takes his time and he leaves it open and it so efficient that he doesn't need need to do more than a couple of takes? Is this your first time with Clint Eastwood. Absolutely absolutely what was that like was a nervous wreck I was a nervous wreck. Check it I I and I think we all were because we all wanted to just I mean we all WanNa do our best all the time. But when you're with someone like client or Mike Nichols just you really and I think we also felt a real responsibility to bobby she survived. Of course she's still alive. And and Richard passed away ten years later he was thirty three when this happened and He got some money CNN NBC you know. They sued them and but the Atlanta Journal Constitution never accepted responsibility for it and the real. FBI Guy who's played by. I Jon Hamm went to his grave saying this guy did it. We see that teen in the movie where he says I still think yeah even when somebody else has confessed knowing it. That's the kind of thing. Well it's a movie that is pretty hard basically on the media and on the feds. It's really saying that in a world where we're supposed to trust certain things we've lost it you know that was nineteen ninety. Six things are worse now. Well and I think it's important to realize is that they just got it wrong and they were in such a rush to try and say the Olympics. That had really. This was only the second day I think it'd be Olympics and and So that was really driving it. And I don't WanNa paint it with two broader brush because look more than ever we need the truth from the press more than ever we I need the truth from the FBI. You know the government we depend on those institutions so that was very specific to this case and I hope people people don't feel that we're just trying to malign those institutions. What does Clinton do when after take? He's happy with it. Well this is what I love of about him and and I didn't realize this is that he just lets the camera. Keep going and we just keep going The scene may be done. I mean our lines. May It'd be done. But we just keep improvising and just continuing to live in that situation and he gets a lot of great stuff that he can use and it's also an opportunity for us to have more time together to experience the chargers together especially nowadays when you don't have rehearsal time you're you'd have your as my friend. Jessica Tandy God rest or used to say your kitchen work nowadays. You have to do your kitchen or in your kitchen you know at at home alone so it's great to have that it's been working. Well when he was when Clinton was here last he was saying that he hates movies. Where the director will say? Hey you know because he said I'm really quiet about it. I just go go when you're ready when you're ready. Just do something I also heard about. I don't know if this is is apocryphal. Or not was when he was doing Spaghetti Westerns and they would scream action the worst would at all also in TV. You know it's just also crazy. The and I think that's when he he developed his style he thought you know. Wait a minute. Everybody's just rushing in and getting it wrong and rushing and getting it wrong again and he just wanted to keep it real simple simple. He says when you're ready people going like this and I remember the first time adequate seen merge running downstairs in Iran into the sound guy who are really liked and I was was trying to speak French Dami said and I thought I thought the scene was over. You know and then that's when I realized it's not over till it's over it until he says it's yeah that's got it he also has. Can I just say he has an amazing cameramen Stephen Campanella he's he's been with them for twenty five years like many of the people on the crew. It's like a family and he just knows how to tell that story with the camera and one of my favorite shots and Clint's to win when the FBI are there. And you see Richard putting his blue gloves on and we've been telling him and telling them not to help the police and then it pans over to salmon. I just standing there looking at him. Like he's never gonNA stop. You know you just wants to throttling. But whatever he's doing he's doing great eighty nine now. Yeah he's still sexiest. Hell you go see. And you've turned that he is. He is sexy telling you. Imagine what it'd be like when he's ninety at like good wine. Everything is perfect to do. Well you you've worked with so many people you know Mike Nichols and primary primary colors. He's somebody I missed tremendously. He's not only a great director but he's just one of the smartest most fun people people that ever lived on this earth. Yeah I agree I remember. I was at an awards thing I think it was the EMMYS and and I lost you know and like about half an hour later. I get this text for Mike. Saying you're among one of my favorite actors I've ever worked with and I thought well that's it dude. I know it's like how lovely of him to do that. In that moment it is but he was right well he was well. It was one of the high points of my life to work with him. I and with that

The Big Picture
‘Richard Jewell’ and Olivia Wilde’s Offensive Portrayal of the Late Journalist Kathy Scruggs
"Brian on your podcast with David Shoemaker. The press box talked a lot about the controversies around Richard Jewel. Let's unpack some of those quickly before we start getting into the nitty gritty of the film Maybe you can help us understand specifically what role. A person named Kathy scruggs plays in this. Yeah she plays a problematic role. I think we should say she was a big figure. In in the coverage of Richard Jewel. She was a co byline on the very first story in this movie she is kind of a suggestion of a character. More than character. Actor probably The big news of courses that they in the movie they suggest or I guess more than just right she sleeps with an FBI agent. Yes after he gives her a tip yes that they are investigating Richard Jewell. Yes it literally say. She does not literally say I will now sleep with you because you have given me this information But that happens in rapid succession in the span of thirty seconds. It's kind of like the trump Ukraine call. Oh it's a quid. Pro Quo don't have to say it. We know what happened. It was a perfect bout of sex for information as trump might say and Olivia Wilde. And I think you're talking about the delivery. Wild has suggested that she was a relationship with this. FBI This is. This is again some reporting that none of us were aware of before this. That's not what's Woodson the movie the movie is high. Sure Gimme some information and I will do you a favor and then the FBI agent played by. Jon Hamm mm says Oh so we are doing this. which would suggest that they were not doing this before the exchange of information? Yeah Yeah So. This controversy has swallowed the movie up in a lot of ways and I did not think that was going to be the case. And over the course of the run up to the release of the Movie Warner Brothers released a statement sort of defying the Atlanta Journal. Constitution's rebuttal of the movie. They were very proactive. In identifying the fact that this is a movie and there is some fictionalization traumatisation happening here. I wanted to talk to you guys especially about what happens when a movie takes liberties like this is generally speaking. For Art's sake. I think we should always be doing doing this. There's the movie should always be stretching and redefining and re imagining and re contextualising these stories to tell better stories that it's not the job of movies to make good journalists. It's the job of journalists to make good journalists but this seems to be a situation where cleese would obviously the director and and grandfather grandfather of this film. hasn't very specific points of view about authority in the media and there is an expectation that he brought a lot of those ideas. Do Do you think that the movie suffered greatly because of this conversation or or is this just something that we talk about on podcast. Because we're all in the media. Dave Weigel political writer had a great tweet where he said all this controversy convinced fenced liberals that they didn't WanNa see Richard Jewel but the controversy wasn't big enough to convince conservatives that they could own the lips by seeing Richard Jewel. So it Kinda put Richard Jewel in this weird have state I'm with you. I'm all for historical fiction and broad license to do it. The exception I would make is in a case like like this because you could have just picked a random person but you picked a real life reporter who's not famous and you're telling the world the one thing you should know about this woman other than that. She broke the story. Initially but Richard Jewel being under investigation by the FBI. She slept with somebody to get the information. So I think if you're going to do that and then take the additional step as wild suggested that this is based in reality this isn't billy ray writing the screenplay allow. Let's make something up you owe it to show your work in some way whether it's an op-ed whether it's an interview or something because this is beyond this is not famous people. Having a conversation in the White House is a real person sue. This is a a very pernicious and well-established trope in movies about female journalists female journalists in movies are always sleeping with the sources which you know I should just go on record in case you you are not as involved in the media as we are. That's not what happens in real life. We're not all sleep with our sources just so you know. That's not allowed. But when I saw this movie. It was a couple days before the the kerfuffle started and I was so shocked. I thought that either I assumed assumed that. This journalist Kathy scruggs portrayed in the movie was not a real person and then when i Google that it was she was I was like okay. Either there is. She wrote a memoir where she literally said. This happened and I did this. And this is how I got the story in my involvement or else she's dead and friends it's option B because otherwise I was like how do you get away away from this with from a liable perspective. It's so blatant. And so and it stands out and the other thing is just it really it. It undermines the movie. I don't understand why you have to do this. Because this is a movie about how the media was responsible will in in and ruining rituals life which is like. That's fact right that is that definitely happened But to put in this seemingly fictionalized or unsubstantiated and like gross comment on a female journalists in the movie undermines all the legitimate if if tricky cases that Clint Eastwood and movie wants to make about the media's role in American politics in life I completely agree with this man was trapped in his home mm-hmm with his mom for eight days while people everyone in America thought he was a terrorist who had set a bomb and blown up people and it wasn't a case of some of these cases of guilt or innocence. Where it's Oh? He was a little bit involved but he wasn't no he was completely innocent. And Somehow you've done this and taking him him he's no longer the sympathetic figure and the journalists who was part of a team with the JC that made mistakes in covering him. And we're not skeptical enough of the government's evidence evidence and case you've turned them into the into the sympathetic figures. I just don't get it at all. It's a bit of a confounding thing I think a lot of journalists are struggling with the movie for the exact reason you mentioned. Amanda which is that I. I think it's actually quite a strong film in one of Clint's best movies and last fifteen years and it's been completely cast aside and a lot of ways not the Clinton needs another successful movie had plenty in his career but it's a movie that metastasized as a lot of ideas that he's fascinated by kind of like libertarianism in the pursuit sort of like a single man's pursuit of success in the face of a lot of people working against him the Atlanta Journal Constitution response to this though. I think has been a little little bit curious. The long piece that they that they published a sort of profile. Kathy's life I think in some ways was very helpful in terms of saving her reputation specifically early about these kinds of allegations but also revealed a person who obviously had a lot of struggles in her life. Who who did some things that are I think just on the page people will look at me like Oh? Maybe she didn't do that but she was that it's Actually like I thought hyper generated new conversation around her life and around the movie Brian. What did you think about? The idea of trying to memorialize is her in. Defend her in the pages of the paper like that. Well I thought one is I think you just want to give her an identity. You know she is she's been. She's not really much character as I said in this movie. Clint Eastwood doesn't really care about the media in this movie. Other than as there's this noise in this thing that's happening Richard. You didn't care about the way that story got written was very interesting actually is a bunch of editors editors and writers kind of putting that together imperfectly as often. Journalism is so they were trying to give her an identity. I think we've Kinda gone now over the falls where we've corrected is using this horrible. Oh stereotype that got into this movie and now we're kind of excusing. What the paper did and all the media did and saying? Oh Her story. I saw held up. No they didn't one guy was innocent and two there were actual mistakes in the peace even in the first piece in the paper together which so. It's totally understandable. Hannibal that the paper wants to do this. But to me at some point it becomes okay. You're giving us one identity. You're telling us the real story behind your life and then there's this conversation about what the media did to Richard Jewell. which is it's actually kind of separate one thing? That's a little lost in the conversation around this. I want to get your perspective on an Amanda is when you're making something let's say you're making a podcast or you're working on a story story or you're making media company every day you're collaborating people. And you're interrogating all of the choices they're making on a regular basis. You have questions about things. The Livia Wild Defense of the character is one of those things where you think that at some point you might ask a question. You might not just presume and I guess that's questioning maybe the integrity of what Olivia while saying the defensive. Her character but movies take a long time even even one day Clinton movies take a long time to make. There's a long time in the making so how. How did how was not not everyone on the same page with this? What am I going to say? Movies do take a long time to make but relatively this was like a very quick movie At least in the filming like this was filmed over the summer of two thousand nineteen and it's December and now we're watching it so that's pretty wild and and it does really seem like Olivia Wilde. Got wanted to takes and it's like go okay. This is the performance going with which is it's it's a caricature I think. It's pretty generous and cruel version of a reporter which is fascinating because Libya while the daughter of journalists so i. I wouldn't say that this is a portrayal of empathy eighty and understanding at least from what I've seen Granted you only get to take her to but she the material is not there on also. Her interpretation of the material is pretty pretty intense but it definitely seems like it wasn't examined at the time and it certainly seems like no one anticipated this and no one got on the same page about their talking points because Libya has been all over the map. And I'm you know what I'm not sympathetic. With the fact that she's answering search for somme choices. I like this movie directed by Clint Eastwood. It's written by Billy Ray. But also she knows what she's doing. She read the

KCRW's Hollywood Breakdown
The Hazards of Making Movies About Real People
"The I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as many of the Hollywood reporter and Matt has come up. Many times in Hollywood does what it loves to do which is to make make movies and particularly awards season movies based on real people that controversy follows and we're seeing more or less at the same moment to different controversies sees. One of them involves Clint Eastwood's new movie Richard Jewel. which according to the Hollywood reporter's awards reporter Scott Feinberg up ends the Academy Me Awards race? It's it's GonNa be very very popular. He thinks with hatemi members in numerous categories. I'm assuming that probably includes picture but in this movie Richard Jewel. Joel this is about the security guard who tried to warn about the Olympic Park bombing back in Nineteen ninety-six a real event. He is portrayed in this movie. Of course he. He was excused of having been involved with the bombing. He was completely innocent and his life was M- very damaged by this. But I'll tell you what life is being damaged now day day in this movie have character a woman reporter who Allegedly in the movie sleeps with a source with an FBI source to get a story about about this and this person this real life person whose name is used. Kathy scruggs is dead and cannot speak up. I mean this is an outrageous thing to accuse as a reporter of that is a firing offense as you know if you were to get wind of one of your people at the Hollywood reporter sleeping with the source to get stuff and I will tell you in my life there. There have been occasional offers. But that's not something that real reporters do and the editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution where this person worked is objecting to this and I will just now. This is a Clint Eastwood movie. Clint Eastwood is clearly very conservative. Possibly part of the trump you know the reporters play reporters are fake news world and I honestly Kinda Hope. This becomes the controversy. Because I think it's outrageous. Well it's also part and parcel of the film this. This is an indictment according to the reviews that have come out of both the FBI and the media and how they handled this situation with Richard Jewel. And I don't I don't think anyone is saying that this was the finest moment for either of those institution absolutely not but it does cross the line there to suggest that a reporter did something like this and it's also a trope like you've seen this in other things with sally field. I'll never forget it. I was like well. Paul Newman hard to resist about. We don't do this right and even more recently. If you look at the character in house of cards played by Kate Mara her relationship with Kevin Spacey. Right if you look even Amy Schumer in trainwreck. I mean that was. She was sleeping with the subject of her story. So this is like a trope that comes back and and I am not what a female journalist but I see how deeply offensive this is And also not necessary like you. Don't need it's Lizzie. And let me just turn quickly to this apple premier. You know apple is trying to plunge into this world. It's been a bumpy ride. We've talked about. They have this movie. The banker they were going to have a premier they cancelled it. Why did they cancel it because the son of the subject and the stories about a black man who this is a real story again of who recruited a white man to front for his financial business sixty years ago before the Civil Rights Act? This is a real story. But they have been using this guy. Son is the sky named Bernard Garrett Junior to promote the movie and IT Turns Out Bernard Garrett has a couple of half sisters who say that this guy had sexually molested them for years ears and this has now blown up. It's a different kind of hazard. Apple acquired this film. But when you don't vet things carefully this hazard that can happen. Yeah that's an interesting question because apple bought this movie after it was already made and neither apple nor the filmmakers knew about this controversy until about a week peak before the premiere and obviously the allegations are very specifically time. But now they've got to figure out what to do with this movie. That has this. Explosive allegation dropped their wives. Yeah I mean I just saved. Proceed with caution when you're doing true real life stories and I think it's a cheap out to Take on someone who's dead and can't speak up. Thank you thank

A Look At The Latest Movies In Theaters
"Movies tonight's premiere a lot of really interesting movies premiering tonight including the latest in the terminator series in the first movie that James Cameron's been involved in in a bit joining us now to talk about terminator dark fate and a few others is sorry bunch Washington post center stage contributor and movie critic joining us here in the here who have program said bunch good to talk to you about friends here in Cleveland how are I'm great Bob I'm great it is it is kind of a weird weekend at the at the movies you've got you've got a couple of pseudo award hi quite releases coming out this weekend you've got motherless Brooklyn right which is the ad Norton new are about life in New York City in the in you know thanks Vera it it is that the the problem with this movie is that it is the features as Norton doing that very ed Norton the actor leaf thing you know if you've seen the trailer a hundred times and I have a you know that this is you know that this is going to be which he you know kind of should the shuddering map and then you also have which is the story of Harriet Tubman I let me see if I may so he let me ask you a bit more about motherless Brooklyn because I am an Edward Norton fan and I'm I mean going going back to the illusionist I mean it I mean virtually all of the twenty fifth hour is that the kind of thing you're talking about when you see a typical Edward Norton type of it is a very it's a very after the manner performance yeah he's doing he's doing if he played a character who has as a mental disorder if they it's kind of a rain man white hi situation and you know it it it depends on how much patience you have for that like I it again my my my big complaint here is that the movie is two and a half hours long and the this is the an ad that somebody with limited patient it's hard to do that and so and there's also Herriot which unfortunately I I miss that my my child had the flu so I was not able to get the the the press screening of that but I'm I'm pretty interested in it in part because it makes Hardman look like a walking talking poster for the the the second amendment as she's you know she she has the arm up there she can head back south and and free the slaves I I I I am looking for that I have not actually seen it's like yeah I can't say one way or the other if it is they recommend or not recommend other terminator dark fate is is the big movie out this week of opening wide on you know four thousand three and is the first James Cameron involves terminator then in the the second one then he turned right back yeah and it is also a direct sequel to teach here this is one thing that people are fans if if there are fans out there who have obsessively watched all of the terminator movies you know terminator three terminator salvation terminator Genisys that that there are Connor chronicle this kind of gets all of that the the the with all of that out of existence and it's just the straight world two terminator two which that's great news that's great news because I I'm one of those who skipped all of those sorry I I I I don't know why the genesis and the others did not grab me because I was a huge terminator fan of the first two and I missed all the rest so I kind of thought I can't go see this I will have missed so much so you're saying that matter does not matter if you if you've seen terminator wanted terminator two you're all caught up I think I think most people have just seen terminator one in terminator three honestly I I have a soft spot for I thought it was interesting and there's something kind of different with the with the with the franchise the terminator dark fate starters there were it features the return of Linda Hamilton affair Connor she is back in trying to save a a young girl who lived in Mexico for being a what being wiped out by the terminator that is kind of a mix of the the terminators from the first two movies that if the if gotta act endoskeleton you know the metal and a skeleton with the metal liquid liquid metal poly alloy him make a kind of separate itself the can in separate itself into two sermon acres wow it's not just one and can I come in gonna coming hello and thank you and also a defining this girl is at a argument human I play by mackenzie Davis who who is the is the interesting actress she was on the halt and catch fire the prestige internet TV are you know prestige SL on AMC about the the ride the use a mac whatever Bubba around the figure out so the bunch though about terminator dark fate is is at his age he doesn't look like in cannot be the terminator of the past what role does Arnold play in his terminator by a persona in this thing sure well I I I don't want to spoil too much but but Arnold is also back he he will be back he is back and he is playing a terminator that has that came back from from the past and have kind of that'll that'll down almost the he has he has a family and I I'm not joking not a joke you have a family and his family is a family of five plus I mean I I get was it too much okay bye I got too much it is it is interesting you know there's there's there's a whole gender studies dissertation the written about the evolution of the terminator through through the years you know the in the four and like the role of masculinity in society or something as in the first movie right he's just as big Bob naked that you'd write me right goes around killing people and you know he is very of what product any you know and then in the second movie he had you have to learn to feel any you know he he gave he did he get them humor and you get them on personality and then in this movie he is again almost domesticated and it's very strange to her watch he that play out on screen it's not bad exactly if it's just strange I don't know I mean but the problem with this movie is that it totally fine but nothing more than that and if you if you want to revisit this world and you want to do it with James Cameron I think you need something a little more than fine but I also don't know that there's there's that much more you can do with the terminator movies right if it's a movie about you know sending a robot back into the past to kill somebody who is important to humanity future and you can only do that so many times with the before before the well really run right right well yeah I I just I think it I I think you could I I I I can't I can't give us a strong recommend in the sense that I don't think it's a much the gotta you gotta get out there you're gonna be wowed by it but it's it's okay it's fine you won't hate it if if mediocre we're not gonna see Arnold on skis jumping over cage shark though you're here you're telling me it's it's it's a less okay I feel like that sounds may have jumped the shark when you told me there's a terminator family I don't know how that's going to play out they said the only ask you one other question also opening this weekend I'm AT and if you've seen it or not but I'm interested just because of the heavy weights involved deniro has taken on a break from bashing Donald Trump and decided to make a movie here with Pacino and with the ray Romano as well it's the Irishman the Jimmy Hoffa another Jimmy Hoffa a vehicle here any thoughts on that one well I actually see that this morning there's a press screening the hot so I I do not have any thought Jeff yeah I I I don't be is it actually out in theaters now is that I had seen the ingleses opens today now so that yeah yeah yes so it is it okay after this is a necklace release it is going to be playing limited in a few theaters around the country it is a and I I just looked it up it is playing in DC so I I see it in a couple hours I will let you get back and let everybody know how good it is next week I yeah but it is it is out in a limited run in theaters right now mostly landmark they think and then it's going to be on Netflix on I think the fifteenth but let me I I will I will I I saw I saw the promotion for the movie yesterday on I don't know if it was the today show for what it was but but I did see here in interview no one today but anyway I did see an interview with the three of them and you know anytime you see anytime you see deniro and Pacino get together on screen which they have done numerous times it's it's huge it's you know either the chemistry is always perfect and and and it's always it the question is about the story which you'll find out later this morning but I'm also curious to see whether or not Robert de Niro's brand has been damaged or diminished at all because of his you know is this political career now seems to be as important to him is that his acting career and some people love his you know outside interests bashing Donald Trump and some people really resent it'll be interesting to see how audiences respond yeah so it it's on that puts on November twenty seventh in theaters now it in a few theaters now Hampel theaters now and then they'll be on Netflix starting November twenty seventh you know it's interesting because I I it'll be it'll be hard to judge exactly what what the response to this movie is because Netflix doesn't release any actual data you know they they don't release box office data they don't release of the data who actually watch it the movie and how much of it so it's hard it's hard to say if audiences will you know will stay away from that new models sorry is this a new model big you're right I mean it's Netflix produced and I think I saw on exposures today it's a hundred sixty million dollar budget so it's a massive budget movie if I saw that correctly in its Netflix and they are going to put it on Netflix but it's going to have a limited run in theaters is that a new model I don't I don't recall that being a very common thing if it's Netflix for them to put it in the mix we asked for a while they do it they do it for the they do it for you know doctors even type movie the the awards contenders because in order to qualify for the Oscars you have to have a theatrical run in in at least New York and Los Angeles or you know one week or two weeks it if if the thing so they they expand that a little bit and do you know Chicago the others but it is it is not a it is not the standard necklace really followed not the first time they've done that they did that last year for Roma and some of their other movies ballad about their Scruggs and and a couple others and they've they've done it a couple times this year but it is it's very it's very strange because the because of the way they work the major theater chains that want to work with them they have to do the right in the route well I'll tell you what Sonny it's a really interesting mix there's terminator if you're a fan of the series of special the first to go to that one if you can stand two and a half hours of jittery go see motherless Brooklyn and we'll find out next week what you thought of the Irishman sunny bunch Washington Post movie critic thank you so

Talking Tech
See Oscar nominees online this weekend
"For six bucks this weekend. You can catch up with Oscar nominated films like stars born bohemian rhapsody and green book on TV the online streaming services. It's the pre-oscar addition of talking tech, I'm Jefferson Graham with USA, basically, every movie that you might wanna see that's nominated for best picture is online you'll have to pay, but it is online. But I you will have to dive into an odd variety of different video formats and device rules, and you better watch past. If you're not familiar with watching video on demand, you pay around six dollars in you, only get forty eight hours to start the movie and finish it. So if you're the type who likes to stretch out that viewing you are out of luck. Most of the movies are available on demand via YouTube Amazon prime video Buddhu fandango now and Google play. Now, the Oscar ceremony will air Sunday on ABC beginning at eight p m e. T five PM, and it's also available on the ABC app or cable alternative services, like YouTube, TV direct TV now and sling TV, let's look at what's available on the major services net. Flicks has four of the Oscar nominated films available to members without paying an additional fee. Roma. Black Panther, the ballot of BUSTER Scruggs and the incredible to Amazon video which is the chief streaming rival to Netflix has none of the twenty nineteen Academy Award contenders. Available for streaming to members of its one hundred and nineteen dollars a year. Prime service yet Cold War, which is up for best. Foreign film will be on the service beginning March twenty second. Amazon does however have many of the top nominated films for it fee. The going rate is six bucks for many the contenders. But some are even more expensive Amazon charges twenty dollars to watch animation nominee. Ralph breaks the internet, but has. First reformed, which is with Ethan Hawke, and it's up for best original screenplay, and you can see it for just ninety nine cents. Look out for really weird rules Baheen rhapsody, for instance, is available in HD on YouTube. However, if you'd like to see the story of the rock band, Queen and four K ultra high definition, you don't have a lot of choices you'll need to be watching on recent Sony or Samsung, four K TV's or you will need to spring for Google's under the radar seventy dollars chrome cast ultra streaming device and watch it that way the ultra connects to the TV and asks you to watch the smartphone app to cast the movie wirelessly to the TV voodoo the service on by WalMart offers films in HD HD X, which is slightly higher resolution and ultra high definition for K. But I'm voodoo a star is born is available in just HD X while bohemian rhapsody streams in HD HD X in USD offer six dollars. Fandango? Now the service from the company that sells online tickets does offer a star is born in four K as does apple. But only if you own the apple TV for K hundred eighty dollars setup box the model that cost thirty dollars more than the entry level, apple TV. If you watch the film on your iphone, ipad, ten eighty p HD finally on Amazon, which has tons of movies of able for video on demand stars burns not there. However, it does offer Oscar-nominated films at various prices are BG the documentary about supreme court Justice, Ruth, Bader Ginsburg is three dollars the wife with best actress nominee, Glenn Close is five bucks and best picture nominee the favourite fifteen dollars. Now, I don't mind paying to watch the films, especially when the fees are so much more reasonable than what's being charged at the theaters. But these uses rules are right for changing. How about one rule on all the services? Do you think that'd be kinda cool? Happy viewing good luck. Oscar winners, a special treat for talking tech fans. Check out my at Jefferson Graham YouTube channel I did a video this week about Wittig grape photos in classic Hollywood locations from LA La Land singing in the rain to the dark. Knight rises. I think you'll get a kick out of it these watch. And let me know what you think you can leave a comment on my YouTube channel, you could find me on Twitter where I'm at Jefferson Graham, don't forget to subscribe, the talking tech wherever you listen to online audio police favorite us on Stitcher, which helps more people find the show and his always. Thanks, everyone for listening.

Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma
"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't know about best editing. The spider verse hairstyling best song song about best picture. Or did. We did that already songs. Best. The song. Okay. What are your choices? I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy. I have a couple of friends getting together to watch the show. I get it. I mean, if you watch I haven't seen all the movies. I wait to watch him on the Denver Broncos play. Year later used be all the movies. It'll be of several of these. Oh, I gave did your wife end up watching bohemian a couple times guide and really liked.

‘The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs’ Trailer: James Franco Hangs Out In Coen Bros’ Netflix Western Anthology
"New trailer on YouTube came out for a net flicks and follow g. movie written and directed by the Coen brothers. And it has a fucking great name. The ballot of BUSTER Scruggs just Elliott. I mean for pod that loves the name Busta for BUSTER. Scruggs is pretty close. That's great. What do you think about this when it's a six part in film. Tim, Blake, Nelson, Liam, and James. Franco's Zoe Kazan there. Tom waits in it. A lot of random people in it again and follow film. There's six different chapters are saying, now this is a Netflix movie. I'm excited for it premiered in Venice to Venice film festival, actually don't know how it did. I gotta pull it up, but what did you think about the trailer? Yeah. Anything the Cohen, brothers do. I'm immediately excited for. I don't even have to watch the trailer, although I don't think my film criticism is to the point where I can properly judge the Coen brothers in the same way. A lot of people do with a lot of nuance and and good take on it. I will say BUSTER Scruggs is the perfect Cohen, brothers name for that. You know, evoke ation of Americana net that Cohen, brothers type role. So yeah, anthologies, they're big right now. Aren't they like rhyme Irvy's been doing a lot of anthologies. On the on the FX channel. What would some of his projects? And they're having a moment. Maybe the Coen brothers will take it into high gear.
