Should The Simpsons Cast Be Replaced With AI Voice "Actors"?

"With most of the actors who voiced characters on the simpsons well into retirement age and the show seemingly having no intention of ever stopping a meeting. Cut wallover at wired. Uk wondered. could the actors all be replaced with a i rep locations. It makes a bit of sense off the bat. Near the proliferation of deepfakes circulating online aside major movie franchises have increasingly been patching together old footage of actors who have passed away like carrie fisher and the rise of skywalker and paul walker and furious. Seven or even just to fabricate a younger version of an actor who coincidentally had an entire body of work from their teenage years to use as reference points like robert. Downey junior in captain. America's civil war and will smith in jimmy man and with the simpsons. You only have to create the voice shortly. that's far easier especially with over three decades of content to pull from wired turn to tim. Mixed smithers canada-based. Ai researcher and media producer. Who builds a speech model that can be trained to mimic anyone's voice and notably has already recreated homer simpson for a few youtube videos including one where homer stands in for julia roberts in notting hill. Here's how he does it. Quoting wired mic smithers built generic. Ai model that can turn any text into audio speech in english when he wants to make a new voice he tunes the model further with two or three hours of new data of that particular person. Speaking along with a text transcript it focuses in on what makes a homer voice a homer voice and the different frequencies. He says after that it's a matter of asking the model to generate multiple takes. Each one will vary slightly and choosing the best one for your purposes and quotes bonnets. The performance is pretty flat as wired. Says it's quote as if he's reading out something that he doesn't really understand the meaning of and quotes which is pretty apt for homer still in the hut the performance. The show would probably be looking for there are other startups around. The world. Likes an antic in the uk and replica studios in australia. That are working to add. Some of that emotional resonance to a voice is using actual actors to help train them performing different lines over and over again with different emotional tones. Technically if you had someone recite all the existing phonemes in the english language or redescendu since that contained them all you should be able to then piece together any possible words. He wants but in reality. People's accents emotions can change things just slightly enough to make the process exceptionally challenging. Although absolutely doable and the time it takes to train the ai decreases over time with more data. Both semantic and replica studios who work primarily with video games where. There's a lot of intriguing possibilities with things like getting a character to say the player's name or whatever. The player wants them to or having a i basically work as a stand in until a real actor comes on board both of those companies say the actors they work with get paid anytime their voices are used in a game and this is a key element for me. Not just what rights doesn't actor have if they're only ever used to train in ai and not perform roll themselves so to speak but taking this back to the simpsons what rights do actors have whose voices are recreated to be their characters the screen actors guild affords actors certain bargaining rights over the use of their likeness. Which does explicitly extend to a performer's voice and while his protection is being rapidly expanded and reexamined as technology evolves you can impart think crispin glover for its origins after crispin glover declined to revive his role as george mic. Fly in back to the future. Part two they technically recast him. But they saddled the new actor. Geoffrey wiseman with prosthetics and employed classic stage tricks like having him upside down or wearing sunglasses to obscure his features as well as the use of some footage of glover himself from the first movie. Unless you were well aware that glover hadn't returned for the sequel. You probably wouldn't have had any idea that the george mcphee racine was any different from the first movie so glover sued the producers for using his likeness without his permission and for not paying him for the use of the footage. He shot for the first movie. But the legality of all of this now banned far beyond simply using a performance likeness and in many cases. Who is allowed to do what isn't so clear. There's copyright law which could give authority to the studio or whoever owns the rights but that counteracts with the right to publicity basically crispin glover thing and that's especially tenuous with cast as well known as the ones from the simpsons. You know a lot of people know these actors and if in a i replicated homer were out there. Advertising for some product people might assume dan castellaneta who voices homer is endorsing the product even if he had nothing to do with it so it's a tricky path to tread and personally. I'm a bit wary about the idea of ai. Replacing actors were any type of artists. Mean that's not to say that i don't want. Ai involved in arts. I think various tech can produce really rad art. I just don't think it can replace human-made arts and especially with something like the simpsons you know on the one hand. It's been on so long that it's the perfect fodder for ai. Replicated voices because then it could live on beyond the actors. And i guess honor them in some way but on the other hand. It's been so long that there are countless voice actors out there who can nail the characters voices perfectly and probably with more emotion.

"It's easy to listen to me. Oh, You don't have to go jump through bells and whistles. I we'd like to do our audio the old fashioned way, Bob. Yes, we do. So the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations are out now. Yeah, uh, the you know where you are fully into award season now and the nominations. For the Screen Actors Guild. These air acting awards came out yesterday and a lot of people that got Overlooked by the Golden Globes were honored by the Screen Actors Guild, for example, I mean, the best ensemble Uh, nominations are essentially best picture nominations. And for those that went to the movie, the five Bloods completely snubbed by the Golden Club's Marini's black bottom that includes the late Chadwick Boseman. Minnery, which is a Korean language film one night in Miami, Which is that movie that imagines what happened back in 1964 when cash is Clay Malcolm X. Sam Cooke and James Brown all got together and also the trial of the Chicago Seven starring Bob Surat. The So you know you it could be going up on the stage, but I think I'll thank you. Yeah, if they wind up winning so those air the casts that have been nominated For best ensemble, which is the Screen Actors Guild equivalent of best picture for best actress in a role. Amy Adams was nominated. Violet Davis, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand, And Carrie Mulligan for best actor Riz, Um Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Steven Yeun. Way too early to make predictions on all of this, as Roger Ebert used to tell me every year, he's you know, you really cannot make credible predictions on this. Until a couple of days before the actual event because there is so much politics that will happen now and literally campaigns by these movies and movie stars. To try to win their awards. And it's not always who did the best job. It's who did the best marketing and you know who put up the best billboards on you know like that, so And Abby. Abby, will you come in here for WGN? That's my voice buried in about 10. Other voices in that conspiracy seven movie Now it's quite a performance. You know what There have been other performances that have only been one line that have taken the gold. So you know my money is on Surat to win. Are you ready for the Super Bowl? Entertainment? I am. It's my favorite part. Well, the food is my favorite part. But the entertainment that's what I watch Fort during the During before, during and after the show before the show. We're going to get it before the actual game itself. We're going to get first of all. Amanda Gorman, who did the poem at President Biden's Inaugural she's going. She has written a special poem just for the Super Bowl and for the heroes during the health crisis. Then it will be the singer called her h er to sing America the beautiful Before that, And then it will be rnb singer Jazmine Sullivan and Country star Eric Church who will sing the national anthem. The big entertainment story is going to be the weekend. The singer called the weekend was going to do the Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show, and he did meet the president give a lot of details about what he's gonna do. He What he what he said quite a few times during this press conference was well, you're gonna have to watch to find out. Well, we knew that we wanted some juicy details out of time. One thing we did find out, though, ahead of time is that Because of the covert 19 restrictions. There's not going to be as much movement non football related movement on the field, which means that the Super Bowl halftime show itself Is going to be done in part of the stands, and I'm told that it's quite spectacular. I'm told that the weekend put $7 million of his own money into the production. Make sure that it's as spectacular as other Super Bowl halftime shows that he has seen in the past so we don't know what's going to happen, but we know that most of it's going to happen in the stands and He dropped $7 million on, you know, trying to make it happen to ask them who was his favorite Super Bowl halftime performance through the years and he said without hesitation. Diana Ross. Wow, which I thought was an interesting pick. We'll find out that hits around 7 30 issues. So on Sunday s O have they just run out of ideas and Hollywood Because there's news of another show that's coming back again. The most unlikely showed that you would ever think of to be rebooted. A lot of you will remember the old TV show. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. And they are bringing Mary Hartman back with the actress that was started in the TV show Shits Creek. The show. She was the clerk at the Hotel Hotel. The motel. Her name is Emily Hampshire. And whether it's going to be similar to the original Mary Hartman or completely different. It's in the very early stages right now. So that's ah, very interesting Pick for a reboot. And we also found out yesterday that another movie Bio pic is gonna be taking place starring Michelle Williams. She's done some of these before. And have done amazing jobs. This time she's going to be playing Peggy Lee senior singer Peggy Lee, who had a very interesting story and certainly very interesting style with their song. You give me fever s? Oh, they're going to start working on that. You know as soon as they can, and I'll look forward to that. I'm a big Michelle Williams fan. Yeah, she's good. What else is on Sunday? Dean Richards. Streaming picks coming up momentarily. And.

"Joanna Robinson. And I am joined today from remote locations by our digital director. Mike HOGAN pillow Joanna and from the snowy peaks of Park City. Our chief critic Richard Lawson. Hello, richard. Hello. We get a live and in person update from Sundance in this week's episode. I'm really excited to hear. Although what you've been seeing. Yeah. No, I'm obviously like mad from L stood sickness. So take everything I say with a grain of salt, but I have to say. It wouldn't be this report without a little bit about stewed sickness, but before we get into that which is discussing potential award season contenders. For next year. We still have some this year stuff to wrap up starting with. You know, we got we got a lot of more information a bigger piece of the puzzle. This last Sunday when the Screen Actors Guild awards were held the aired on TNT. We saw a bunch of actors go up and get their starts us, and maybe cemented some narratives that we've been talking about for the past couple of months. So I guess I will start with Mike and just asks or what was what was the narrative that you feel like most got set in stone by Sunday. Well, I don't know if it's set in stone. But I feel like Rummy Malik could win best actor, which I didn't really think was the case before this clearly, you know, the Screen Actors Guild members really liked that movie and gave him best actor over. Christian bale, Bradley, Cooper, Vigo Mortenson and John David Washington. So that's definitely a very good sign for him. And then seeing Glenn Close when made me think. Okay. You know, she's in a good spot and very well could win that Oscar for best actress for the wife, and then I guess maybe cemented is my notion that Marshall Allie will win for green books that seems at this point now fairly set in stone. Yeah. I don't think there's any question really about Glenn Close. Now. I mean, I think that not only has she had these two preliminary wins in the Golden Globe. And that second word, but she's given like good speeches. And I think that now everyone's like, okay. Like, that's what we're that's how we're voting this year. That's how it's going Glenn closest telling us a story, and we have to hear the end of it, you know, toward the NFL worry. So that feel certain mersal feel certain Rami. I don't know. Like, I feel like that. I almost wonder if Christian bale, and rather Hooper are splitting vote somewhere in Rami is the one. Third-placed guy who kind of comes out the Victor. And all that. Because like, I I don't I don't know. I I guess actors. It's just everything that movie's support considering that, you know, the Atlantic article that came out about rising, or I just I'm like what why are people holding onto this movie so tightly Richard night, both tops and like immediately on we'll not immediately on a on a time zone delay or Richard coming out of a Sundance screening, whatever it was to give our maybe kind of cool takes on the sag awards on Twitter and both of us zero in on the same thing, which is when was the window of voting for the sag awards as compared to win the Atlantic article on Bryan singer came out, and that Atlantic article detailing number of accusations from young men about Bryan singer's activities rumored activities, basically, you know, a known rumor for years and years and years came out two days before the sag voting window closed. So probably most people that are cast their votes by the time that article came out, and it's not to my mind. And you ear mileage may vary. It's not. Rami Malik should be necessarily held accountable for Bryan singer's actions, of course, not. But then the sort of the press he's been giving around it, which is just sort of a blanket. I didn't know and the absence completely of any acknowledgement of it in his speech on Sunday as both a strategy and one that I don't know if he's going to rub academy voters the wrong way rubbed me the wrong way. The point that I was making on Sunday was imagined. In actress the last two years getting an Oscar for Harvey Weinstein film and going up and not making any kind of aknowledge -ment of what that meant to some other women watching were anyone watching you know, that would never happen..

"I know Cody saw this movie Harvey Weinstein might be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten rumors of lake Park City that the disgraced Hollywood mogul is at the Sundance film festival this year. A source told page sixty gossip. Cheat in the New York Post. I think. That they heard Weinstein was taking meetings at Park City. But he has not been seen publicly separate source said that Weinstein's former assistant had attended the Gucci and time for change event on Sunday. Giving credence to the fact that Weinstein might be at Park City, but Weinstein he's been accused of sexual assault and faces criminal charges Weinstein recently appeared in Manhattan supreme court with his ex lawyer Ben Brown brackman and his new team Jose Baez, Ron Sullivan and Duncan Levin who will handle his upcoming trial, which is slated to begin may six Weinstein's rep did not return requests for comment was a movie about him. Pretty good. Cody was okay. It's really informative goes way back to his days when he was a concert promoter in buffalo in the seventies. So harassing women back there. Probably I mean, the very first woman that was on the documentary. She I think she was from seventy eight. So what's the movie called untouchable untouchable? The sag awards were last night. That's the Screen Actors Guild, the essentially the union for a actors in movies outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role. The winner was ramming Malik for bohemian rhapsody beating Christian bale and vice and Bradley Cooper stars were born Vigo in green book and John David Washington. Black klansman the outstanding performance by a female actor the winner was Glenn Close for the wife. So she won the Golden Globe as well. Outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role Mahershala Ali in green book. And Sam Elliott did not win. He won the golden. No, no. He didn't win the golden nominated for an Oscar outstanding performance by a female actor in the supporting role the winner was Emily blunt in a quiet place. Oh, and they were so cute. What you want to John was O? And then people, well, I won't mention the dress. She wore. Because lovely. Yes, she did. But I won't mention it because it's hard to describe. And we don't have a picture. So. Outstanding performance by a cast. I like the fact that they give a an award with the. The entire cast for the motion. Picture was Black Panther the performance by a male actor in the TV miniseries went to Darren criss in the assassination of Johnny sake. Won a Golden Globe to and female actor in a TV miniseries or movie, Patricia Arquette for escape at Dan Amora. Really? Yeah. This is a nice one. I watched this series. I think it's coming back for a third season male actor in a drama series, Jason Bateman or Festus loves that show in Ozark. It's very good and outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series is Sandra and killing eve, which I've also watched in his very good and is coming back for another didn't she will the Golden Globe as well. Tony shalhoub in the marvelous MRs Mazel was a winner. He's great in that. And Rachel Brosnahan is also very good. She won for the marvelous MRs Mazel, and so those are some of the winners. I noticed our our friend Hollywood Tim who who helped us arrange a lot of this stuff up at the festival this year. Thank you, Tim. He said actors in like Netflix series streaming series. They they don't get residuals. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They aren't syndicate. There's nothing to resist, but that's a lot of backup. That's interesting that another reason they should get. We were talking earlier about them getting raises raises, and they should because they're ever going to get that money. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said on Sunday that he is seriously considering running for president as a centrist independent in twenty twenty Democrats are saying don't do it because you'll assure Donald Trump win. He'll split split the vote. I heard some analysts saying that doesn't really happen. They don't siphon enough votes. Independent candidates. Don't siphoned enough. I disagree. Yeah. Jill Stein, siphoned away just in those certain areas where Hillary needed it. And that's how she lost. And then there are also people saying Hillary Clinton is leaving the door open. "The lakefront on Vic Vaughn in the WGN radio newsroom. These are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Tuesday night, we are live and the AllState skyline studios, and I'm wondering if any of you got up early to find out which movies were nominated for Academy Awards this morning. Some people get very excited. I don't know if I wonder if this season seems a little bit lackluster to folks, I'm not really as much excitement. And I wonder if Matt Fager home from Roger Ebert dot com and India outlook dot com, if is feeling that from other people, I think I feel like you and Tom get very excited about the film making other people are not as John. And by these films is interesting because I mean, I think there actually are more high grossing films. Nominated this year. So they're thinking, maybe that'll get more excitement. And but maybe not who knows. I mean, I think I think the academy has to I just feel like the secret is to find a way to make the work exciting. And especially the categories that they don't think of that exciting like and they want to start cutting them from the telecast. And I'm like, no, no has to be about the work. It has to be about making it worth watching. So now the Screen Actors Guild awards they obviously don't do best picture. They do best cast. Yes. And so we're going through for some of these categories. I'm trying I'm sorta filling out my ballot. As we talk. That's why I'm here. And we're also comparing the actors that were nominated for Screen Actors Guild awards perhaps or were a warrant for the Academy Awards that differs a little bit. And for the best supporting actress offering the Screen Actors Guild is Amy Adams for vice marina day data via Tavira, Regina king for if Beale street could talk is really Academy Awards. Emma, stone, the favorite and Rachel vice for the favorite. Yes. So first of all that category. Do you have any Regina kings wanted already? Really, I think. I think these front runners have just been coming up in different shows. And I feel like she really has the lock on this. Absolutely. And she's wonderful. It's it's a great. I mean, really the the whole cast. I mean Beale street should be up for on samba. I should just say it's one of the best ensembles of the year. Barry Jenkins, great director if you seen moonlight. You know, how talented he is. And it is a film. That's yes, there are there is a lead KiKi lane this young wonderful actress, but it really is a great balanced ensemble to Tom. I did want to ask you question. Matt for Beale street now I sincerely loved Bill street. Yeah. I didn't love it as much as moonlight. But like that's not not accounting for taste or anything like that. Barry Jenkins is one of the best working directors right now moonlights sets a very high bar. You really does he really dug himself a hole with that one a whole of quality? Yeah. But I wanted to get your read on Brian Tyree. Henry because he stuck out to me in that movie so much he has. Yeah. He was just he took over that movie for about ten minutes. And it was so good. I wanted to get your thoughts on I had the great pleasure of seeing him on Broadway actually acting opposite Michael, Sarah and Chris Evans in a Kenneth Lonergan play called lobby hero. And he was brilliant in that in that. He was he was extremely funny. But also very intimidating and deeply tragic that man has the whole spectrum that he can play. And we see it on the show Atlanta. We see all these things. And and you're right. I mean, I think just that once I know there's one pivotal scenery gives this monologue about being put away about being in jail. And like what that does to your soul. And it's incredible piece of acting. It shows that this this is the textbook definition of a of a great ensemble contender. Well, and the thing about it feels she could talk not nominated for an ensemble. Or any of the words? See what's so weird? Is that the sag awards, and I think it's actually oftentimes one of the best shows because it doesn't play people off. So I think they kind of did that last year. But it's it's really seemed to be more about the work and honoring the work and its actors voting for actors, but it's oftentimes, the safest choices interesting any show. Well, I don't know why I. So so that's where they which but for so for the Screen Actors Guild awards, Emma stone from the favourite, Emily blunt, quiet place, Mark, by the way, I watched a quiet place. It's. It is. That's you don't want absolutely Jesulin's hand to hold. And Emily blunt is excellent definitely deserves the nomination Margot Robbie. I mean like having to deliver a baby like that. Really how high the stakes and this moves you had two very different bath tub scenes wanna Mary Poppins, very different in Mary Poppins a little bit. And then rates the vice for the favorite and Amy Adams for vice which I mean, you mean she's nomination. She's one of our great actresses. But I really think it's got to the point where if you she just sneezes she'll get nominated. I hate to say, she she's great. But not there's nothing in that performance. I found memorable. Plus, I think she's nominee shirt. We wear the. I mean, sharp objects. She was great that was one of her best performances. Yeah. She's an amazing and sharp objects. I was in pain. Like, I was like my depressing. Fuck out of a water bottle. Yes. I'm watching the atoms in the small town that goes against the grain of everything she got famous for playing those wonderfully sweet. Total night and day. So good. Yeah. So so in this category. This is a tough one for me because I it's tough because the front runner is is nowhere to be seen which is Regina king. She's so this one is to figure this out for myself. Well, I work on that one later know, I think I think Emily blunt could win actually because she she had a lot of people are sad that she got snubbed for Mary Poppins, and she she's had an amazing year between those two films, and I think she'll be she'll become the favourite because Emma stone, Rachel vice both exceptional the favorite. But they keep cancelling each other out. I don't know if there's one that has an edge over the why wondering if Margot Robbie could conceal this woman, and she's fantastic. And Mary Queen of Scots. I wish I wish more people saw that one. Yeah, she's fascinating in that film, so for so again, we're talking kind of going back and forth a little bit because the Screen Actors Guild awards are this Sunday, and I have until Friday submit my ballot. And so we're kind of talking some of these things so for best, and we're also blending this with a conversation about the academy. Award nominations came up this morning now I did finally watch and he's not nominated for the Academy Award, but Timothy chamois and beautiful. Boy. Yes, isn't credible is absolutely not for the Screen Actors Guild award. I don't think he's gonna win. I think we all know. That Sam Elliott isn't run away with this one. Don't you think? So you think so you think Mark Marshall Marshall? Mahershala Ali keeps winning for for for green book. Even though it is technically co lead performance. I feel like he's better performance as far as I know Sam Elliott, I know I would I would I wouldn't say it's a better performance because I think Sam Elliott is brilliant breaking in a star is born. I would love to see him win. It makes you also because like just one for it. But then it becomes not about the work. It becomes about other work and how it's sandwich. Did you got? But I would love to see Samuel get in there. And Richard E grant's great. Yes. Adam drivers good and black klansman. I didn't think it was the best. That was good. But it's almost like comedic relief. Yeah. A little bit. I've got a bias. Yes. I love everything you. Given so much more. Interesting performances. Yeah. I mean, this just this one. I don't know. It's it's not even I was one of the few people. I feel like that really enjoyed like Patterson. I I think that's more of what he wants to do. But I think he was just jazz to be in a Spike Lee. Sure. I mean, he's perfect for what what he's asked to do in it. But Timothy Shalam as one of our is watching him as like how I felt watching heath ledger in the dark Knight and Brokeback, and I was like this is going to be a major force. And he already is breaking movie. Yeah, he's going to an incredible career. Well, as I say goes, and I was okay. When Paul Newman one for color of money, right? It was not for the color of money. Let's be honest. So that's where the hustler was for cool hand. Luke, everything you've ever done before. Possibility of that happening for Sam Elliott. Right. It could absolutely. I mean, and he said, I get it. Something can say it's about time is basically what he said reaction to is now managed, but yeah, I mean, he has fifteen twenty minutes of screen time. And it's the definition of a great supporting performance Marsh lollies, really elite. I'd like to see a supporting actor win this in category. Personally. Okay. So that's that's the supporting categories, and I think I've made my choice there. Yes. And instead of Timothy shell may and the Oscars at Sam Rockwell for vice again, no funny. But no, not not Oscar-worthy eighty just one last year. So come on. Yeah. If someone else a chance he is pretty for those who if you haven't seen vice he plays, President Bush. Yes interest. It was Dr. Yeah. Well done so let let's take a break. We'll come back. We'll talk about best picture. And basically, I'll have to do is best tumble will sort of be the the reflective categories swayed more for this for hanging out with Matt Fagor home from Roger Ebert dot com and out outlook, India outlook. It is the right things. That's why I'm here. So many information three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred to join our conversation anytime, you can call text us three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred what do you think?.

"Live in the AllState skyline studios. This studio is he is an assistant editor with several other individuals. Roger, Ebert dot com and out its outlook dot com. Indie outlook dot com. I've to make a card for you. That's what I'll do is. I'll give you one of mine, they go or I'll say, hey, Matt introduce yourself to the audience, and we'll do it that way too. Control of your own your own information. And now must control something. I just said this is this is what's called an eleven o'clock at night snafu here. So there it was when I said Willem Defoe played a famous artist. It's actually Van Gogh. I just want to say that is okay. Yes. Yes. Yes. A defo's listening. You were not that big. Mr. where he is the listeners, we're not chastising. You said don't worry. They weren't a raging for your move. No one's seen the movie. Everyone needs to see the move. Now. As a reason to go see the movie is it go or is it? Controversy of the award season. Let us know. So we are talking about the Academy Award nominations. It came out this morning as well as the Screen Actors Guild nominations. I am voting in the Screen Actors Guild, and I have not finished my ballot. The awards are going to be on this Sunday. And that was just telling me that the Academy Awards on February twenty four. Yes. Sunday, a Sunday the same night that Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara performing at the Chicago theatre. Okay. I bought a ticket to, but I might have to actually cover the Oscars this year. So someone's gonna have to get my lucky tickets knee-deep in their series that I can't say on the air. Oh, yes. Season is so good. I just think they're comedy. God's incredible. They're going to be the Chicago theatre. We just talked about them for the next. Nominated for the Screen Actors Guild awards. Okay. Let's go back to you. Okay. Three one nine eight one seventy two hundred if you want to join the conversation and tells who you light what movies you thought should have been nominated or do you love these nominations? Let us know we are on the category for for female after an a leading role both Academy Award to on the Academy Award list. There is. Aparicio from aroma, and you're saying off the or something incredible. Yes. This is the first bit of acting. She's done ever. Really? I mean, at least on film that we've seen and it's an incredible performance, and the more you learn about how found on the director made this movie the more. You just amazed at how he just kept her in the moment there were times where she was. She didn't know what she was gonna film day to day. It was always just being spontaneous right in the moment. And I think it's magic what they created together on this. I started watching it on my on net. Flix? Yeah. And I thought well, I'm supposed to watch us on the big screen. But now Tom is giving me an article cinemas are not gonna run Roma to snub. The streaming services. Have you seen really? Yeah. Because they're trying to release it wider with the nomination. That's that's a darn shame AMC and regal at least will not be showing. So you've got to find out on the bigger screen or take your see? I have a deep tube television from nine from one thousand nine hundred nine. Yeah. So I kind of think I need to up that kind of. Well, I mean, and we're so spoiled being in Chicago, I saw it at the music box theatre. I took my sister seventy millimeter, and we were crying by the end this phenomenal piece of cinema. I mean, it's it's a shame. That's lovely. It's a shame. Because I mean, they want it in theaters as well as on streaming. I don't think there should be a van, quite frankly. So she is up for for best actress, she's not up for the Screen Actors Guild award. Now, I'll tell you my two favorites in this category. Yes. The Screen Actors Guild, my two favorites are Glenn Close. However, I have not seen the wife that on the performance. Sure. Sure. The other is I think probably the long shot for both the Academy Awards and sag is Melissa McCarthy. Sure, can you ever forgive me? The story about Louis Israel who I'd never knew anything about this. And she is she I mean, she's good. Yes, she's despicable and unlikable at some points. But then you also she does a great job of showing you that. She's really seriously depressed. Absolutely. And it's hard as a literary forger someone who's just like I'm just trying to get my work out there. And it's like, no, you're just past your prime, and that's it. But she's just so gifted at channeling all these great writers that she has this encyclopedic knowledge of it's a fascinating, psychological portrait. What's so great about McCarthy? And this is that she has this. You know, recognizable persona that we've seen in bridesmaid's. But sometimes it can be used as a crutch and she never gets into that stick ever. So really flawless entirely different character that she creates she's an angry hostile person for them. First moment, you meet her. And and I loved her for every minute of it pretty grant. We'll talk about him in a minute. Oh, yeah. The other the other nominees in the Screen Actors Guild award where lady Gaga, Emily lady Gaga. I store stars board Emily blunt in Mary Poppins returns and Libya Coleman in the favourite. And I think that seems as though in the Academy Awards she seems to be the favourite. I don't think so. Glenn Close as year entirely. It is because this is her seventh Oscar nomination, she's never won. This is her year. I really felt like as soon as she gave that amazing speech at the Globes. This was affirming her as the leader of the pack, right? Kalman's great. I actually just watched the favorite a second time right before coming over here. And it is a great tough performance. But it's interesting again, the studio politics is she really the lead. Like, I think Emma stone and Rachel vice or more the league. Frankly, that's truly an ensemble. It is very much. We're hanging out with Matt Fager home. He is assistant editor Roger Ebert dot com and out now, I had it written outlook dot com, and we will continue our conversation about the word season for movies. And also, we'll talk some television too because I've got those nominations to check those boxes when we come back. It's the Patti Vasquez show seven twenty WGN,.

"Supporting actor critics choice and Screen Actors Guild award nominations and also having his handprints and footprints immortalized in front of the TCL Chinese theatre last week in recognition of his powerful portrayal. Of Bradley Cooper's character's older brother in Cooper's claim two thousand eighteen version of stars born the great Sam Elliott over the course of our conversation at the offices of the Hollywood reporter, the seventy four year old, and I discussed the roots of his acting ambitions, how the sudden death of his father who had doubted his future and acting impacted his career path why the first film in which he was the central star. So they'll further ado, let's go to that conversation. Simply so much for coming in. It's great to have you. And we always again with just a few basics on this podcast where were you born and raised and what did your folks do for a living was born raised from Sacramento, California in nineteen forty four. My dad worked for the fish oil f- service. -partment renter government. My mom was a schoolteacher at that time. She was. I guess she was a housewife, and she was a mom, and she was still going to school. She graduated from the university of Texas at El Paso, where they all came from making me the only one that was born in somewhere outside of Texas, which I rounded very live down or the. Constantly reminding me that it was a prune picker, right? Well, so growing up were movies or TV or theater big partyer life. What were the kinds of things that you most responded to it was never really theater? I went to there was a music theater there in Sacramento, which I remember seeing Rumpelstiltskin those quite taken with that in my folks used to go to the state fair every year, they were involved in these horticultural exhibits. Dad had a greenhouse that built and grew these award-winning begonias, and there was a theater there. And I remember going and seeing plays there and some woman came down. I was watching rehearsal. There was a lot of time hanging around the fair, whether setting all this stuff up and remember watching this play and seen been fascinated. It was kind of a dress rehearsal. Think everybody was in full stage makeup in those days. It was heavy. This was the fifth is very heavy. Stay in this gal came down and talk to me and chess being if I was interested in getting involved in the children's theatre, I think she later spoke to my mom about it as well. But I was afraid to do that. So I didn't do that. And at the same period of time. I was going to a place called the sequoia theater, which was the neighborhood theater watching lot of Saturday matinee and that was relief. The thing that captivated now reason for you to particular remember this, but we didn't interview New York maybe four or five years ago tied to I'll see you in my dreams, which is a movie I'll ask you a little bit. And I went back and read the transcript, and I found it interesting. He said that I guess a kind of very important people in your life where Corey Blodget and Ramona Reynolds who were they? Do remember doing the interview with you? I don't remember specifically Corey and remote ahead. Great fortunate that I had a lot of mentors from grade school on but Corey bludgeon and Ramona rentals were my high school choral teacher and my high school drama teacher. They knew at that point in high school that I really was fixated on having a career in business, and they were very instrumental in just keeping me on that road keeping me focused on it and tell him it pursue it. Because at home, you're getting maybe some mixed message..

"And Screen Actors Guild awards for best supporting actor awards eligible in all categories. There's an intersection between the quiet tender moments of night and the act of writing and reading poetry breathing. Something someone else's were in potentially in the middle of the night. And then you read it is look kind of aquatic transmission from one person to another. Find knocked turn or every listen to podcasts. I'm Michael silver bland, this is bookworm. And I'm talking with John Ray about his novel gone send the story of an empty and adrift California girl who is looking to be full who wants to empty her life of hypocrisy and who travels abroad to become an American town. Ben now, when we spoke, John we were talking about your novel. Oh, boy, which is about a boy who literally goes underground. That's right. He's living in the subway. He's living in the tunnels under New York City. Now this time it's a girl around his age. Who is also choosing a different underground is being a writer. After the experience of exploring the Sandra grow. For me. It is certainly from the beginning of writing gods. And I saw it as a companion novel in a way to to low. Boy, I've always been fascinated by people who commit far more than I I suppose most of us might to a very subjective view of the world and to a very passionate and often very private fantasy that guides their their course through sort of I guess what we might refer to as consensus reality. And I've always thought that something that the novel's especially well suited to do to address all the many layers in the extremes of human subject tippety. So I guess that is something that my characters tend to have in common. Well, seems to me that one of things that the novel CANDU. Is break the reader from conventional expectation, and what we learn about Aden. Grace sawyer. Is the extent to which emotion is by Valent? The great irony of her situation is that she has come to Islam and come to this region of the world in search of something that is not ally. But in fact, she herself is living a lie by representing herself as a young boy, the one thing she can't do is to speak the truth in the place that she's chosen to be now. Again. Well, I think your references. Shakespeare was was useful to me. Also when I was writing I mean. The nature of the novel in many ways is such that if you establish a certain set of parameters, and if you win the reader over to the degree that he or she would like the story to continue, and they would prefer not to question its fundamental assumptions if they're enjoying what they're doing if they're if they're along for the ride, and they want to see what happens next, then they the reader will extend you a certain amount of credit because in fact, we all like to to read narratives in which improbable events occur kiss. It was this something like the reader's thing. Please John Ray and company do not take the stream away from me. I want to Fung aid in where she will go anywhere except back home.
