So there were twelve cells per section and twenty four total this separate sections faced each other on opposite ends of the day room there was a plexiglass closed control room in the middle so that the guard on duty could see inside both sections and scan every cell door by simply turning has hud from the start of his incarceration linwood briley took charge in this e pod a month later in march nineteen eighty j. Be moved into the same cellblock. Lynn woods reputation inside. The prison was the same as it was on the outside. He was a natural leader. He rarely lost his temper. He had a quiet charisma and made sure he was in control of himself and others around him. Jb's reputation in prison was also the same as it was on the outside loyal to his brother but intimidating to everyone else while the two were on death. Row together j. b. was when woods enforcer. the two of them ruled the death. Row pod the briley brothers reputations preceded them. They had killed many more victims than their counterparts on death row. The other inmates knew who they were dealing with. And if there was ever a hope of challenging the brierley's superiority it was dashed quickly in nineteen eighty one a year or so after his arrival j. b. made an attempt to escape death row. Those plans were thwarted after it was discovered that someone a girlfriend of his was trying to smuggle in weapons. Jv served a brief stint in solitary confinement but the incident was soon forgotten by prison officials. This security at mecklenburg was only as good as those who enforced it and they're never seemed to be good enforcement one day in june one thousand nine hundred eighty three a new death row inmate. Dennis stockton was moved into the cellblock. Dennis was convicted in a murder-for-hire plot in stuart virginia a small town in the blue ridge. Mountains dennis would keep a diary of his experiences at mecklenburg which would later become the most insightful document detailing what life was like inside. Virginia's death his diary was the basis of a book co written by joe jackson the first inmate to approach. Dennis was lynnwood a day or so. After dennis arrived lynnwood picked up a chair from the day room. Placed it in front of dennis's cell door sat in it and introduced himself. Dennis knew who lynnwood was even though dennis lived two hundred miles south west of richmond. The briley gang's crimes had made news all over the state not long into the conversation. Lynnwood handed dennis. What looked like a rolled up cigarette. Dennis took a drag and realized it wasn't tobacco he was smoking. It was colombian refer. It was dennis's first realization. That day-today life on death row wasn't so strict and the one in charge wasn't wearing a guard uniform according to linwood the guards knew about the pot they also knew about the homemade wine being made in the cell block. They just didn't care lynnwood would later say they would rather see as doing that than sawing on the bar. That's how it reportedly worked on death. Row the guards would allow for some rule breaking as long as it eased some of the tension. If there were no fights to break up the guards were willing to placate the prisoners. The dennis in lynnwood became fast friends. The two of them shared an interest in marijuana. Dennis would write in his diary that linwood nj were in charge of much of the drug trade inside the prison lynn woods. Entire cell was reportedly littered with contraband. He'd sell cigarettes bootlegged wine drugs and just about anything else. He would tape provocative photos of women on his walls photos. He would receive from female admirers on the outside. Dennis relished his friendship with lynnwood like his friend. Dennis had arrived at mecklenburg with the less than stellar reputation. The guards were leery of him immediately. Dennis had an expression that could be described as menacing. One person who worked on his defense said dennis had no chance at an acquittal because his is revealed so much evil he compared making eye contact with dentists. Like making eye contact with adolf hitler. Dennis was similar to j b. He was fierce intimidating and confrontational. The two didn't compete for alpha dogs status inside the pod though. Dennis conceded that role to j. b. dennis. One scott wise to jb's penchant for cheating at cards had been anyone else in the prison. Even lynnwood dennis likely would have said something but it was j b. Dennis decided it was best to pretend he didn't notice. Dennis may have had a friend in lynnwood but he never got close to j. b. fell that there was one person in the of that could kill him. It was It was it was one day in october. Nineteen eighty-three when lynnwood. I mentioned breaking out of prison to dennis. The two were playing scrabble and lynnwood psalm. Something they often did together. Lynnwood brought it up casually. He asked dennis. You ever think of leaving here from that moment. Forward lynnwood and dennis had a lot of conversations about leaving mecklenburg. It didn't take long before they both agreed that the best way to do it was by tricking. The guards. That seemed easy enough. Considering how lackadaisical they were lynnwood considered dennis to be a useful accomplice. He and the other death row inmates knew nothing of the geography outside the prison. They had no idea where those roads lead to while an inmate dennis had been driven to danville for court hearings into south hill for doctor appointments. He knew the lay of the land. Dennis and the briley served on death. Row the same time as another high profile inmate. Joe giradi tano. Joe had a history of crime violence drug abuse and mental problems at thirteen. He tried dying by suicide. His father had abandoned him and he wouldn't meet him until he was an adult. The to finally met in florida both of them were inmates. At the infamous union correctional institution outside stark. Joe was taking after the father. He barely knew not long after his return to virginia. Joe was convicted of killing a forty four year. Old woman and her fifteen year old daughter inside their home in norfolk. Joe was the mothers roommate. The home had been known as a party house where visitors regularly came and went one night. In february nineteen seventy-nine police found the bodies of the victims. They had been fatally stabbed and the daughter had been raped. Joe was reportedly in drug hayes when he woke up and saw the two bodies. He believed he had committed the murders even though he had no memory of doing so he panicked and took the first bus out of town. He wrote.

"Some of this is what i got from him. You just said it's not eighth graders yes it is at your whole life. Think of it any time you look at any situation. You have identified the problem. Was the situation. The guys across the street robinson or whatever it is you have to decide. Do i wanna get involved. You have then eliminate what you're gonna do just going to run over there and take the gun off of them or not you know then you have to make a plan and say yes. I'm going to do this and then you have to take action. It's it is. You're absolutely it's it's just been a human being when you have to have the skills to know what to do when you're confronted with a situation and when you take a sat's next week you're confronted with a situation eighty times so you like you said it has to be like muscle memory. You have no when you hit that problem. You'd have to know okay. What's his problem asking me and do i want to solve this problem now or do i want to move on and come back around to this the next time the the interesting challenge. I find as an educator. And i know you're a i don't want to put words. You're not breath figuring agree with me as the the solutions to lot of these challenges exist and are pretty well known and are available to people. It did hard thing is to get access to it routes lately all the things. You're saying that you know we're going back for years right the eighties. When we were little kids couldn't hit But so it's like why. Why isn't this already happening right. This is why you're your initiative test campaign why we wanted to get behind. It is so important because we're taking ideas of been percolating for years formalizing and into a really system that people can use anybody can have access to.

"Inculcate it. you're right while they're going through the skills. They are inculcated cnn in the content. That is a good looking at hundreds looking at hundreds of different questions. I think we're up to four thousand individual questions now so when you're in math you're looking at. We're not teaching this what you do you teach them how to do. Those words sometimes just giving them all kinds of exposure to those and so they're seeing hundreds of them they say what's the right answer. What would what could not be the right. You know that sort of thing. So there'd be there being immersed you might wanna say in the content but you're absolutely right what we're doing though teaching this five step problem solving system which which i think is so needed. I am when you get to deep into this. Because i don't want to get off track but i had to go into a school this week into an observation and i got with right disheartening because i go on the room and i was observing the child. I was at busy. I became from charles. They were having some behavioral challenges. That's not born. But i'm washing the class. And you know the teachers. I'm thinking is this teacher. And i'm like you i. I was a teacher. I trained teachers of the. We're going to ask a critical thinking question. Anything second level synthetic at all right. "It's not by accident. They know what they're doing. They have the knowledge they have the skills and they do not lack for confidence so they are performers and they're making a ton on being a performer and that's what we talk about knowledge skills and confidence. That's what you have to do to be successful on your test. I totally agree with it. I love it. I i'm work with an sat next week that this may not be rivaling whenever somebody's listening to this but one of the things. I constantly talk about what students is. Get a plan. Master your plan and just do the plan a gazillion times. So you get into the exam for better or worse. Yeah we are. We teach to a test. Yes but that's one of the things you need to do sometimes unfortunately and then you go in and it's become so natural you just execute. I li- i really liked that performance metaphor. Because it's true. This is anything if you shoot a free throw in basketball contracts a million times when you get into a game in higher pressure situation. It's natural motion and a natural exercise of Let's let's get down to some sort of like this route stuff so somebody is interested in test camp. They subscribe which is which is very inexpensive very inexpensive and they would into a site and they could go to different modules so the give us some examples. What what somebody expect from their experience here. What makes us Different and why we're a good fit for you is that You're helping members knowledge skills and in the conference where you're helping them with the knowledge particularly the content knowledge and we're adding on top of that the actual test taking skills so when they come into the camp if you think about that kind of a metaphor the test camp they come in They get a pass for one hundred twenty days. It runs all the way through labor day for our summer camp thing we have going on right now So one hundred twenty days. They can go in. They can go into math four different levels of math. That start fairly easy. Sixth seventh grade runs all the way up through tenth. Eleventh grade All the fundamentals of mathematics they can go into reading writing english social studies. We have several different ones. We just finished our reading. One just came on board here recently but what they do this different as they go in the choir the practice of test taking skills and we have what's called the problem solving system and this is from the research. This is something we just made up. What is somebody thinking. When.

"Thinking. Well where can we go. Will i teach teachers for a living and those students so think about those college students. They all have to go out and take their licensure. Exams pass rate on. That is somewhere in the seventy to eighty percent range. They're paying hundreds of dollars to take these exams over and over again. And that's kinda how. I got lord into this and why are pilot has dealt probably ninety. Five percent of has doubtless teachers either. Teach people going in their teacher candidates or they've already been hired by school district and now they need to come back and passer their tests. And that's where we've become very popular. So it's become a licensure or certification a barrier. Exactly that in my day. I'm not sure we're we're we're kind of contemporaries. Were in our late thirties. By the way There was a thing called the n. T. e. n. T. e. stood for the national teacher exam and be teacher. You had to pass it. And i forget what the standard was think was eighty percent. It wasn't that rigorous then they had a general one then the all sort of subject matter one so if you're an elementary schoolteacher just had the n. t. Let's say a high school math teacher like some people say names you would have to take an n. t. e. for math and I don't know what i don't think this has existed more. Think it's completely state level then all privatized out by two major publishing companies so every state decides who they wanna partner with or and we won't get too deep into this but yes the part with one of the two companies or they create their own. Kentucky's a good example. Is someone decided. No we want to kind of go this on our own. But you're absolutely right. There's three tests for most teachers will make this quick General knowledge test my smarter than the average fifth grader. You know just a general baseline test But you're right a subject area exam here in florida..

That was the claim that Scott wise of Scottish brew house said the company's guys warehouse had five million dollars in that. But we'd be sold for twenty million dollars. Why is then later told them? The company was actually sold for ten million. And then the company had eight million dollars in debt. The lawsuit says according to wish TV with the story wise knew that the company would not sell for the twenty million dollar price. He said to millions to men said they've lost over a million dollars that they had invested in the company following two thousand eight. They also say that Scott wise, tried to get them to sign an indemnity agreement releasing wise liability if he were pay both men five hundred thousand dollars and included provisions that they would pay one hundred thousand dollars for any disparaging remarks, they might make about Scott wise to third parties the men did not sign that agreement. Now that part I think is is meant to make people say, wow, I think a lot of that is very standard. I think a lot of that is very very standard the idea of indemnifying get being an indentified, you know. Hey, can't hold me liable. Senator I I think that's a much more standard piece. But if you hold someone you only had five million in debt, and you had eight million in debt that could be an issue. Screaming that the company would sell for twenty million. Well, that could be that's what we wanted. But the market then here you go. So.
