You know, my wife says all the time to my daughter, you don't know what's going on to someone else's house. And we certainly didn't know what was going on with Scott park's house, the people who laughed at him in Greensboro didn't know. And now it was out there. And Scott took great pride in that. And he let everyone know, I'm not mad at you. But maybe be nicer to the next guy. If it took a missed shot, if it took just a little bit of online embarrassment. To get this story out there, it was worth it, right? Absolutely. Count me in let's do it again. Yes, sir. And so this McGee is where I do need to bring us up to the present. "The words and that's something. So he was getting in trouble, but at the same time, the people who were the officers, the technical officers who were storing them with the Barrett's, they liked them. Because they knew his classmates like them. And they'd follow on in these hijinks. And they said, this is the kind of leadership capabilities we're looking for in young officers. Hopefully he'll mature. But, you know, he's got these tendencies. So at least once it looked like he exceeded the number of demerits that would have resulted in his automatic expulsion. But somebody went into his record book in a race a bunch of them. And saved his bacon. But he graduates last 34 in the class of June 1861 after the Civil War had broken out. Was he not just not that interested in this schooling side of it and more on the military side? You mentioned grant with a good horseman, he was the people he was a good swordsman. He read a bit more often novels, romance novels about Cavaliers with the Napoleonic Wars and things like that. But he just, he was kind of a class clown type of guy. You know, I would try to categorize it more like that. But he did just he would reach your point where it looked like he was going to be expelled for getting too native merits and he'd go weeks of time without getting getting clipped. The same thing with his stomach. Oh, I got to get a better grade on this. On the next exam, he just did what he could to stay in, but not to distinguish himself academically. He was self aware. It sounds like he knew when he needed to hunker down and focus, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so afterwards, and later life when he became a success writing magazine articles and wrote an autobiography after he died, some of his classmates when they wrote to his widow. They said, we never thought he was that smart. Surprise. Whenever, you know, never, just because someone doesn't get good grades doesn't mean that they are bound for failure in life. And a number of people who have been successful in the military didn't want the top of the class academically, but they had other qualities like Dwight David Eisenhower. And that made them successful in later life. Yeah, I would say Eisenhower was rather successful in life. You mentioned the date of 1861 and according to the movie, the first action in the Civil War that we see Custer taking part in is on July 21st, 1861 at manassas. And almost immediately, he does something that he shouldn't do when he knocks down his commanding officer and orders him. His men to take a bridge. How well did the movie do showing Custer during the manassas campaign? It's exaggerated. The depiction of custard bull run is exaggerated. Now, he graduates, I think June 24th, 1861. He goes to New York orders a uniform buys a saber and a revolver and the other officer equipments heads down to Washington. And he's assigned to a company to second calvary, which is part of the army that's going to try to capture Richmond, which is going to march on bull run. You know, it's his first battle in his Civil War memoirs, which he was writing at the time of his death. He just, I was there. And watch this. And wondered if we got into action if I should use a saber or a pistol. But he doesn't talk about knocking out his squadron command or performing any feats of daring do. Congressman Bingham, who got him into West Point would later claim that when the union forces were retreating a wagon got upset on a bridge and troops began panicking because they had visions of rebel cavalry coming down on top of them and that Custer stepped in and restored order. And he may have done that. But punching out punching out a superior officer on the battlefield. Only in Hollywood could you get away? It's gonna say this to merits in West Point, but I think that that might be something that you would not be able to come back from. Well, there is a scene in the movie where major romulus tape is writing a letter to Custer to reprimand him. But then lieutenant general Scott walks in and upon the news that confederate general Lee is near Gettysburg, Scott orders tape to dictate a letter to appoint a new Brigadier general to command the Michigan brigade. And that letter gets written down on the, it's interesting the way the movie shows it. It gets written down on the paper that was originally addressed to Custer at top where they're going to reprimand him and then at the bottom in the letter is this, oh, you're appointed to being a Brigadier general. And the impression I got here was that it was both rushed, a mistake, and a complete surprise to Custer himself. Is that true? How stories promotion from first lieutenant to Brigadier general. At the end of June, 1863 came as a surprise to most of the rest of the army and probably to him, but it wasn't an accident. After bull run, he's a west pointer. And even a west pointer with a poorly ingested military education. He's been trained to be a soldier for four years. And he's part of an army of amateurs. All these civilians who have been recruited. I mean, during the first year of the war, the Union Army went from 16,000 men to more than 600,000. So having officers with any kind of training, well, they were at premium. And so he starts getting assigned to a very stacked positions. And by the spring of 1862, he is assigned to the staff of the most powerful soldier in the Union Army, major general George B mcclellan, who commands the army of the Potomac. That was the north's largest field army. And mcclellan lost cluster. He says, this guy has said it was always clear and danger. He always brought me accurate reports on account on him for anything. And Custer goes from being the goat of his class, you know, the Charlie Brown of West Point to someone sitting on a footstool at the center of power and he's making connections. He's networking as we say today. And the command, even though most officers aren't west pointers, they're fresh from civilian life. The senior command, these are west pointers. They look out for each other. And.

When he spoke last night to Congress and the country, we have a giant opportunity to bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice. Real justice. With the plans outlined tonight. We have a real chance to root out systemic racism plagues America. American lives in other ways. The Republican response to his speech came from the Senate's only black Republican, Tim Scott, of South Carolina, and he offered a vastly different view of race in America here to explain NPR political reporter Juana Summers, who covers race and justice. They wanna Hi there, So let's walk through both speeches, and we'll start with the president because he's the president. How How did he approach issues around race? He says she's were woven throughout his speech and nearly every priority that he brought up but about two thirds of the way through the speech, he talked more explicitly about these issues. We heard him name white supremacy, ist terrorism, and he talked about efforts to dismantle systemic racism. As well as the murder of George Floyd and legislation to overhaul policing. The president said that we have all seen the knee of injustice on the neck of black Americans, and that now was the time for progress. Time for progress. India may also be detecting on Lee about three or 4% of its daily infections. We're talking about maybe five million infections a day and in India right now, which is it just a huge number and so pretty soon, Murray says the Corona virus may run out of people to infect here. Even in India country of 1.4 billion, we think that infections would be peaking, probably next week. And then in our model, we think that deaths will probably peak about the third week of May.
