Dak Prescott reveals he got help for depression: "It saves lives"
"Scott Van Pelt. One big thing was about Dak Prescott and Prescott spoke out about depression skip bayless criticized him for it and Scott. Van Pelt. made it as one big thing last night. We track that down for you. Here's Scott last night on sports center. We've never had more access to athletes than we do right now, social media has allowed them to control message and their brand like never before, but it's more than that. The modern athlete is more willing than his or her predecessors to share themselves in ways that reveal humanity their vulnerability. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that these stars are just like we are because we won't ever be in. Line for thirty, some odd million dollar a year contract. We won't ever be the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, but we all carry around things with us pain burdens years, and they get heavy is the real. Even if you're the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott shared with Graham Bensinger that following his brother's death by suicide, he struggled with the pressure that the isolation of quarantine impacted him significantly as well. Prescott shared this. When you have those that you've never had I think that's more more than anything the chance to realize and recognize it on to be vulnerable about it. And that's what's so different about the modern athlete, not instagram or brand management. It's the understanding that there will be understanding that you don't have to pretend to be tough when you aren't that you can ask for help and know that it's going to be met with compassion for the most part. And also to know that those who can't muster any? Aren't worth your time. We're concern. Yeah, I'm there's. Fell the last sentence was my favorite part in George Dino in L Z granderson joining us now for cross. The lesson was my favorite part. The encouraging part about this whole skip bayless Dak Prescott thing guys is the reaction to it from everybody else that Dak Prescott was universally welcomed after somebody tried to criticize him for being vulnerable and that's when that's when you know you've turned a corner when the when the reaction is. So overwhelmingly one sided. George. What'd you think about all that stuff? Look I've worked with skip before on first take many years ago and I think skip is a nice man. I think what the problem is that people don't realize is that he has a very one track mind. If you notice, there was a huge mistake. He made a mistake not that long ago. I remember when Paul Paul Ryan, kind of delved into sports in one of these political debates can. There was a clip that went viral about him. Not even knowing who was right like that's just who is and I'm not look I'm not condoning what he said at all I think what he said was reprehensible like I someone particularly who has suffered from depression who has had real struggles dealing with loss at times as many of us has Scott pointed out right I think he's a very nice person off the air I just think he's not very worldly or standing of anything that's not in his particular sphere or circle, and most of it is sports

"They're very good players and yet for them to put themselves out there international audience in a sport that is not their profession says a lot about them a lot of respect for them doing that but I also think it's going to lead to a lot of fun because we're going to have some failures out there we're gonNA hit a bad shot especially those guys. Hopefully Tiger and I will be able to cover for our partners. We're all GONNA hit some bad shots and laugh at. That was five time major champion Phil Mickelson talking about his in tiger woods newest golfing partners. Tom Brady and Peyton manning that's right it's going to be a face off between two. Dream Team's on the course this Sunday for the match champions for charity betrays ten million dollars for Corona virus relief efforts the possibilities for the event are endless. Will Payton be screaming Omaha from the tee box? What Brady six rings affect his grip? We'll rogue rob Gronkowski takeout tiger on the back nine and steal his golf cart. Today we break down this one of a kind of event with ESPN's resident golf savant Scott Van Pelt and also discussed what it's been like for him to cover sports in this unique moment. It's Friday may twenty second. This is espn daily presented by marathon. Scott very important question. I Ken pro. Golfers wear shorts should they? I say yes. What's the was the problem like are people are afraid that they're gonNa look sloppy or something? It's not an issue at all. We saw it at seminole with the event last weekend and is not a problem at all. I see. That's a whole other deal stylistically. What are we doing? Scott Van Pelt is the host of the aptly named Sportscenter with Scott Van Pelt and has covered Gulf. Spn for nearly twenty years. I mean we're talking about we're talking about decisions that are for beyond fashion. I mean if you're willing to wear those then I think we got a question a lot of things beyond just the short choice. Excuse me George Choice. I mean what I just realizing. I've never had a pair of Jean shorts in my life. Never not even as a child not see. I'm so old. I don't think they made them so. I mean this is. This is like a generational thing but I'll say to my knowledge. I never owned a pair of jeans shorts. It's never too late. That also is true. But you know what? It's too early to start wearing jeans shorts so others later early. I don't know but I'm not wearing them. Well speaking about the question of whether it's too late or early to start things. Let's talk about sports coming back. Giddy UP SCOTT. The match part two. Is this Sunday this time? With the addition of a pair of football legends Tiger Woods will be paired with peyton manning. So Mickelson will be paired with Tom. Brady the event will raise at least ten million dollars for corona virus relief. Now there was golf last weekend as you mentioned so this is not the official return of the sport. Nevertheless this is exciting right. It is because manning and Brady are both good enough to hit shots. But they're not good enough for you to expect them to hit good shots every time. They're also very competitive. They've got competitive pride. They've got a great friendship in history so to fill in tiger and I mean it's interesting in it's the conceit is interesting and there's just enough of they might hit a really bad shot than I think people you know we preemptively rubber neck because still expect them to hit it correctly from one to eighteen like. That's not reasonable so yeah I think I think it has everything you want. You said Brady. Manning are pretty good. How good are we talking? I mean compared to the average. You Know Hack Golfer. The just is enthusiastic about playing but really not that. Good way better than that. I I don't know current anti I don't know that but I know that both would reasonably expect to be able to shoot in the seventies. You know what I mean or low eighties so I mean that's that's way better than most people play off. I was actually kind of surprised. They agreed to do it. Because they're such insane competitors right and obviously next to the pros they're not going to look great. No but I think that speaks. That speaks to how they're both wired. They like the hell with it. Let's go man. And and we had phil on on sportscenter and he said he admired the fact that they're willing to do it since this isn't what they do and I appreciate the sentiment but again. I think that there's I think we all know that person Mita and maybe we are that person that all you have to do is just give them that. You won't do it and then it's like okay. Well whatever whatever you just told me I'm not doing we're a thousand said doing and if say if Peyton were in and then Thomas I me like are you get. Are you kidding me or vice versa? So I mean I think all of that player what is the actual format of the match. And how do you expect that to factor into the entertainment value? I know there's some sort of modified alternate-shot which will be that's actually a fascinating idea because for those that say or casual observer of Gulf when they play the Ryder Cup. Let's say you and I are on the same team. It's mean and Van Pelt and you you tee off now. I've got to hit your second shot. Well that ramp up the pressure on you exponentially because you're thinking I don't WanNa hit it somewhere. Where GRANDPA got no shot. Same deal with me. I don't WanNa put you. I don't WanNa put me behind a tree or whatever so you're so stressed about not wanting to let your partner down. I WANNA say the back nine includes that but like when I was reading about this honestly I was more interested in where they playing tigers course. How much money are they raising charity? It's a ton I think. It's easy to get cynical and go. Well what are they being paid? Look they're not turning up for free but like I don't. Does it trouble you? That they're making my doesn't trouble me the raising money to help people and I honestly I don't know the specifics of the format think it might be might be a best ball to start and then the alternate shot and that's where it gets interesting. You mentioned this is tigers. Home course the medalist golf club in hopes Florida did feel have anything to say about his home field advantage. Oh sure he did. I mean it was always needling with tongue in cheek. He's like well. I mean I wanted to play. Wherever in tigers like add to be on his home course he was the one that was so insistent that we go to his home course. I beat them in Vegas and he didn't like that. It's still pisses them off and I understand would do would be to. He was insistent despite everybody else wanted to go elsewhere that we go to his home course metals club which is great for. Tommy gives us an opportunity to give him a memory that he's not going to like every time he shows up at his home. Course listen I think Jordan membership has privileges in being the goat? Has Its privileges. I mean when you're tiger you can say now play here. I'll play and my place and what's what's everyone else can do go. No I really WANNA blow up my place. I mean but they're all goats this turning they say that Phil Mickelson A. He's he's got. He's got no claims of the goat head to head with tiger as relates to their sports. So Tigers GonNa win that tug of war and I mean and I give him ton of credit I think he has evolved over the years to the point. Where he's incredibly cocky but in a fun way and he's also got awareness and is self deprecating about. Look we can count right. I've got five. He's got fifteen. So how when it comes to Major. So we'RE NOT GONNA WE'RE GONNA get into bookkeeping. I'M NOT GONNA start running my mouth too much. I think for a lot of people. This event is appealing not just from a live sports perspective but from an entertainment perspective. I mean these are four incredibly famous athletes. We don't really get to see that much. I mean their personalities will be on full display. You've spent time interviewing them. What do you think the dynamic will be like? That'll be interesting because Phil owned up to the fact that when they when he and tiger played for for nine million dollars you know when you get miked up you're Kinda you understand when you put a mic on what you're meant to do right like you're supposed to kind of give a little commentary here. Oh we gotta hear the Zingers. Well they got back there and they're playing for big money and nobody said anything. Then it gets boring so. I think these guys recognize that there are expected to provide a bit of the commentary. Now you got Charles out there. You Got Justin Thomas out there. It's a fun dynamic of broadcasters in their the plenty of people stirred up but when it gets down to it and it gets serious. I don't think it'll be a whole lot of BS. And the same way as with your buddies if you play golf but I. I have friends that I'll play with. I mean you talk until it gets serious and then you know you grinded out a little bit more so I would expect it to be fun until it gets series. I mean tire woods is arguably next to. Mj whose competitiveness we just saw on full display one of the most competitive athletes in the world title. I can't imagine he's not going to start taking this seriously at a certain point. I'm sure will. I've always compared tiger to Michael Meena because everyone likes to win very very few people despise losing the way we saw. Michael explain it in the last dads and look it. Golf is a sport of you. You mostly don't win except for a period of time where tiger one at an unprecedented pace so he was able to channel that sort of single minded. I WANNA win and make it so unlike anyone we've ever ever seen and this is different. This is for you know just for fun but not really because you don't WanNa have Phil Talking Crap to you about Louis. Another one of these days so yeah I think. I don't think I know I know we'll take it seriously. Because he's got pride and he'll try he'll try to win. Because if you keep a score he's GonNa try to win Scott people watching for the Gulf. They'll be watching for the entertainment. Some will also be watching because they might have a financial interest in the outcome as you know the world of sports gambling has suffered for options. Lately were looking at Taiwanese hoops Russian Ping Pong East sports. You've known to Dabble in some wagering. Who's your money onto win at all? I would take the underdog just because it's a coin. Flip to begin with. I tend to almost always take underdogs. Fillon Brady underdogs. I just take him. Because in a coin flip situation I want my get back to be more than I'm risking. But you know what else that say meaning like if you've been on the sidelines for the last couple of months if you've managed to not bet on Korean baseball and NASCAR like you're not obligated to have acces. That's my favorite thing about all of my fellow. Degenerates is always joke about this foot for the football season starts. You're not obligated to have action on every window of the college season. You don't have to have all the new owners hooked up in Nineteen Parlay. All the three thirties teaser. You just don't now you do get do have to have the Hawaii game.

I imagine a lot of time at home. You're probably not in self quarantine at the moment. You have to go into the office for a couple hours. What is give people a sense of? What it what? What is your work like? At the moment we tape this on Tuesday march seventeenth. Well I mean. It's it's certainly different In terms of what we're covering initially because there's very little left but for the moment we're We're kind of a skeleton crew We're continuing to do Of Sports Center at night and they have been very thoughtful about the number of people that are required to do so the number of people that should be in a room at one point in time any time. There are large gatherings and that will really try to be Very thorough and making sure. Everything's wiped down this and that I think I think it's a challenge for everyone People on our show staff people in our office anywhere where people are still gathering in mass. And by that I mean you know more than if you like to know what we're going to do and to be smart about it so it's it's kind of more of a skeleton crew than it's good and we're essentially taking it day by day Less hour by hour now just because pretty much everything. Shut down I don't know what else to say. We're postponing the for now. I think we're taking it day by day and and wondering what there is to cover with grateful and the short term for free agency the NFL and that they are involved like this is this stuff would be headline stuff regardless right even if the tournament we still on the NBA. Nhl and everything else would still play so we have something in the short term to cover. How well we'll have something because well that's another matter entirely but for now Obviously the kids are in school. Were home at the House without going out and about I'm just going in Doing my job it now. It's different but I mean are are are small little crew is still gathering and doing shows and and until it becomes clear that that's not what we should do. We Will Scott. Can you give me I? I know that you work You know you you principally work at night so this is sort of a guess on my part but probably a logical guests that there would be less people on the ESPN campus in Bristol at night versus sort of the regular nine to five from your perspective at night. How how reduced is the campus? Like when you're driving in like do you see far? Less cars is it. Is it like many people would Who have sort of experienced to are still going to work like essentially like a bit of a ghost town in a very feeling or is or is it similar to what it is normally is for. You know I'd say what it feels like. Richard is is a bit like Of like on a holiday You know you notice that there's not as many people There's one sort of Small Little Parking Lot. It's nearest the The the building where I work and that parking lot isn't big And so it's kind of a challenge to find a spot which sometimes people are always there. They find it interesting that way. You don't have a parking spot. Not and I'm looking for spot things everybody else Those parts are easier to find out because they're already people And that that's that's clear like that. The number of people parking spots is the most obvious well like there aren't as many people here but again I think our company like so many others is being very very. What's the word of the moment abundance of caution people that are able to work from home working so and That that's the most obvious sort of difference is just the availability of parking spaces. Have you found? Management being hyper vigilant in sending out Notes to the staff about If you can practice social distancing if you can And some you can't work from home We're going to keep you updated on everything because obviously were massive major sports company and so much of what we do is now being determined by things out of our control. I always say like you know if. Espn does something stupid. I'm happy to mention it but one thing about your company that I've always said and I really really admire when it comes to the health of their employees when it comes to win employees. Get into trouble if they're abroad and something bad happens to them. It really is a first class and first rate company so my instinct would be dead. Espn is generally speaking. Been pretty good and thinking about The health of their employees. But obviously I'm not there. You are two things you're exactly right. I mean whether it's a snowstorm that well whatever that's a bad example because there was no winter in New England but any time. There's a threat of snowstorm. There are you know have been secured this local hotel so that if anyone that's working at night like you don't have to go home you're right. They're they're they're interested in and what that's just a snowstorm this pandemic. I mean they're obviously You know they're out in front of the most accurate information And the most sort of up-to-date no one's like no one's being forced to do anything It's just sort of what people are comfortable with. I think every every company and and ours is on. That list is doing their best to figure out what's what's necessary Obviously to do show requires a certain level of participation in presence Like yes they're your instincts are accurate that very concerned about The CAST members as we're looking after Scott. I WANNA go back to last Last Wednesday and I'm sure both of us would probably acknowledges last Wednesday seriously feels like nineteen fifteen like it literally feels like fifty years ago but yet it was last Wednesday night where You're I imagine preparing for sportscenter now. Obviously sportscenter that's still going to be incredibly different given what everything that's going on and then all of a sudden in the second quarter. I think if I am wrong on my timeline here I apologize. But in the second quarter of that Mavericks Nuggets Game The The season basically is cancelled and that precedes. What happened with the thunder jazz game when the players are not walking on the court? They're not coming on Kgo. Bear eventually tests positive for the corona virus. You're probably somewhere in Bristol watching all this like Holy Shit and then somebody at your company tells you Scott. You're going live on the air here. You'RE GONNA to toggle between the live game with Ryan Rubio Endorse Burke and let's see what happens so I want to sort of dial down into this because this is like really the kind of stuff that news anchors do in situations of conflict and disaster and stuff. We don't often see this with sports. So if you could take me just Let's start with just that day and going in and what you thought might happen and the moment you start going on the air live with us when we were. We were sitting there doing what we always do. We're we're preparing to do But we're also preparing to do half time because Wednesdays this season we've been doing half times of the early and late games with our show following the lake in so The first quarter in Dallas is going and we were getting ready to talk to watch. Because I was going to share the news at the end was going to be on Thursday to try to figure out what to do moving forward about playing games. If you remember the reporting lease was without fans that was going to be the next step and as we're preparing for that we're watching on televisions this jazz sunder game and it's obvious something's not right and by not right. I mean people are leaving floor and people leaving the floor getting this report from. Why shown did somebody might be sick. What happened with with the in Oklahoma City was obviously like a wait a minute? What's going on and then we're hearing that the game's being delayed because of an illness. Well real quickly you go in Holy Shit. Somebody's got it and not long after its rudy. Go bears got it..

I really like the way that this team just feels to be around the. It's it's a very clear message. That's two stars in the navy and its everybody else gets on board relationship that is developing between those two off and on their cohesiveness on the court. The legal tampering part of that obviously with the basketball men's and women's tournaments or cancelled and the spring sports cancelled as well the NBA putting the League on hold for at least thirty days the XFL has ended its season spring. Training is over and the start of the season is delayed. Today's poll question. Next week Tom Brady will be staying with the Patriots joining another team or no decision made we had the great reporter. Tom Curren. Nbc Sports Boston. Who has been covering this with great detail and he thinks that. There's no decision made next week on Tom Brady but he says Tom Brady is gone from the Patriots in the question is where would he land and Tom Curren pointed out some things? I want to know what Plan B is for the Patriots Because Bill. Belichick IS NOT GOING TO BE BLIND. Sided by anything here is jared. Did Him has he shown the Patriots? Enough where you go. That's plan B. Jared stood him. The Auburn quarterback is going to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots moving for. Can You bring in a backup? Not An Andy Dalton backup because Brady's GONNA cost you. What thirteen and a half million dollars on the cap by becoming a free agent and as far as Brady where he would end up I still feel and it felt all along. The colts made the most sense. Now may not make the most sense for the colts but it would for brady very good offensive line. Got Good Running. Game your skill position players are good not great. You got a good head coach former. Nfl quarterback you've got a really good GM and Chris Ballard and you play half your games indoors that to me feels like the best landing spot for. But I don't know if they if they view him the way he might view them Tampa Bay. I think is going to be all in. The reports all indications are Tampa's all in. I think Oakland Jon. Gruden loves the quarterback he doesn't have and I think out of respect to Brady. He would talk to him find out what he wanted. The chargers need Brady. I believe that I don't think Brady needs the chargers as much as the chargers need him. But if this is about legacy about winning another championship it's not about money. At least that's what we're told but doesn't it always ended up being about money. Brady wants to be paid. He wants the respect he wants to. He wants to have people fawn all over him because he never got this. He doesn't get that with his own As coach his onery does now. The owner says I'm going to stay out of this. So Brady doesn't even get that part of the equation. Chargers makes a Lotta sense just to be relevant. You know the the price you pay to be relevant in Los Angeles. Tom Brady is worth that. The raiders go into Vegas. I would stay with Derek. Carr if you'RE GONNA if you're the colts in you're looking at Philip rivers. Why wouldn't you look at Tom? Brady Tampa you got to move on from Jameis Winston and Tom Brady. Is there for a couple years with that talent there? And that coach Bruce Arians. Okay I understand it. I don't think you're winning a super bowl because I don't even know where you would stand with the other teams. You got the saints. Who are still very good. Carolina's GONNA rebuild and Atlanta. Maybe the free fall is over. I'm not sure but now maybe you'd make the playoffs so I don't know some of the other spots for Tom Brady but Tom Curran. Said Hey there could be eight that are at least slightly interested but I think there's two or three that are really interested but we'll find out about brady coming up next week. Andrew Brandt he covers the business side is sports for ESPN. He says Just sent out a tweet I do understand. Nfl Free Agency does not require public gatherings and contact. And I do understand. It would be a welcome relief but I can't see it next week. Sportsworld SHUT DOWN. Many teams sent home optics etc and there is no urgency to having it now. Hashtag CORONA virus yeah. I don't know how much it's really going to bother people if you go. Hey Tom Brady signed. You might go. Yeah I got something to talk about here. Some wide receivers going to get a contract. Is SOMEBODY GOING TO BE UPSET? We hold it off a week. I don't think that's going to matter. I'm not going to be bothered by it if the players sign that new collective bargaining agreement. I'M NOT GONNA go. Oh they're making all this money. I mean just stay on schedule here. It's okay I don't unless you're saying. Nfl teams can't do their job and that is travel because member teams travelling to Brady. They were going to his his place. You have physicals. You'RE GONNA fly private to go to Brady. How many teams are going to do that? What about pro days? What about scouting you know? So there's I understand that part of this and then the NFL draft. I can't imagine that they're going to hold the NFL draft in Vegas with inviting people. I just don't think that will be in any position by then where we go. It'll be safe to travel. It'll be safe to get into a group here and that's that's a crowd. Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I think they'll have the draft but the draft may be teams. Just call in old school way of holding a draft. There you just pick up the phone and say the Detroit. Lions are taking to a tongue. Vilo you can have cameras and the war rooms there. You can have a camera at some of the high draft picks The home of the high draft picks there and we don't have those awkward. Hugs with the Commissioner. I'm all for that and you do it in Vegas next year and seems simple right. Andrew Brandt with another tweet please. Players don't report. Nfl teams for almost two months. There's no reason to start the league year. Now maybe free agency and draft in same week as big. Nfl showcase week. Just a thought all right. I appreciate him looking out for us but I'm okay. I'm okay if there if there happens to get you know. Be Some really big news. I think my life is going to be okay. If I'm at home quarantined in my basement. I think I'll be okay to take that information. Tony in California join. Just hey tone when you have for me. Hey Dan how's everybody doing? Hey but there Friday this is just you guys know before your current and before. Ratto deal and we're talking about the niner's I you guys asked me on the show and I told you the he was going to the forty niners back on the twenty seven. Th You look at the last the last segment of the first hour. It's there was this January twenty seventh. No that'd be worked twenty seven. Oh February twenty seventh okay. Yeah so that was just before it all broke out and then you think Jeez. Getting Twenty seven twenty million. Or what have you paid you know Brady another five. You're you get him up in that range in talked about you know Brady. And the chargers uniform how good you look look just think of that scarlet red with those baby blue eyes in his scaring defense is breaking. They are easy. They're Tony. Tony Thank you though and I'm sorry. I didn't acknowledge that you said Brady could go to the forty niners there but imagine the powder blue charger uniforms with Tom's blue eyes. Yes that's why I think Tampa is out. Tampa released their a look at their new uniforms and they're a tweaked version there a better version of their current awful awful uniform but they're not the cream sickles or orange versus third LESS PUTRID. I think Brady and cream sickle would look pretty good right. They're not going that direction and Tom Brady cannot wear that his wife never allow it. And the fact that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch Evans said anything about this publicly where they're backing Jimmy. Garoppolo is awkward. And the less I hear about it the more. I think it's real because you you have agendas here. You have both sides with the Patriots. Brady and Ben Bella check and then you have teams that are trying to get the information out. There you know. Tampa made it clear. They're all in on Tom. Brady the raiders. Nah I think we've found our guy. Derek Carr the niners haven't really publicly backed Jimmy Garoppolo. I think George Kibble is the one guy who has so far so that feels like. That's real the colts haven't said anything about Brady. It's been in. I told you this I during the Super Bowl Week. The Scout told me if you're looking for Philip rivers to play for another team look at Indianapolis and that appears to be the destination now. It sounds like Tennessee is gonNA resign. Ryan Tannehill okay. How many other options does Brady have and in do you? WanNa go back to New England. You WanNa get another offer. You'd love to get an offer to take back to New England and maybe get into a bidding war here. I think you're just trying to create leverage here but if I'm the niners do I give up on Jimmy Garoppolo. Only if I think what I've seen is is as good as it's going to get would the Patriots won't Jimmy Garoppolo Back. That would be telling if all of a sudden. Jimmy Garoppolo is cut and bill doesn't sign him. That would that would probably give you your answer of maybe how other teams feel about Jimmy Garoppolo but Garoppolo almost won the super bowl if he wins the superbowl. We're not having this conversation right right. We have this conversation. Because you'RE GONNA go. Yeah you won the Super Bowl and we're going to move on from you. He had to passes batted down. Did he miss a homerun throw? Yes he did bat interception. It felt like the titans. And the niners were hiding their quarterbacks in the postseason and that's why I think those are the two landing spots for Brady and Tampa might be. You know the wildcard there. But where can you win? You can win in San Francisco.

"Tell them. Fu and F. You too happy happy sixty first birthday to Saad happy. It's not happy okay. Get it right happy birthday to her. I don't care good luck. Dana White is GONNA join us in about ten minutes. Tis CONOR McGregor makes his return to ESPN pluses favourite. Blood Sport Before we get to that though I have Something to ask you guys. I'm curious because I don't know the answer to this and I'm a little bit ignorant on what some of the rules are so Jessica Asoka Mendoza went on Golic and Wingo Jessica. Mendoza is a place. Get up I take. She's a mets employees A mets consultant. Yeah she well. She works for the met and baseball has asked its players to not say anything about this Carlos Beltran. I don't I don't know what's going to happen with him as the mets manager but there is a there are some people saying that he might get fired two before it even starts. Even though I again I make. I don't know what's going to happen there. But he was in the middle of the cheating scandal with the Astros player. They're not punishing players because punishment's have to be collectively bargained. And even though commissioner can do best interest in baseball stuff they wanted the players to speak freely and without punishment so they could do their investigation and so they gave the players immunity immunity on this one so they can get honesty but Jessica does says quote to go public with it and call them out and start all of this. It's hard to swallow. And it's one thing for billy to go after the whistle blower. It's another thing entirely for a baseball executive to go after a whistle blower When there's a vested interest interest in protecting your own manager there and so I I wince when you go after the whistle blower on the wrongdoing? Oh you know okay with us doing it. You're not okay with no I don't I didn't like the billy did it either. But I don't love the going after the whistle blowers on things when they're examining and showing. You is the wrongdoing right. But the problem with this particular whistle blower is. He benefited from the wrongdoing and then decided added to blow the whistle when it was convenient for him after questioning his motives which is fair. I mean you're not you're not complaining on yourself when you're the one doing you doing after if you've already left and there's no consequences to you. It's fine for you to think that it's a bit different for baseball employees to say it out loud you thinking that and giving your opinion on that I get when baseball. It's telling people to not when she's a mets employees and cheese existing in in an unusual world where she gets to be between broadcasting and a consultant. I don't know what the rules are on that but I'm telling you the rules. Are you have to disclose right. And I feel like Jessica's really responsible. She probably knows at this job comes before her job that she has to give an opinion on this stuff. It's that's your job up and your rules are if you don't like the rules do whatever you want so yeah well. But in this particular case I'm not objecting to her breaking the rules I'm objecting to her opinion being flatly wrong..

"Usually this man is the one doing the interviewing and do an outstanding job at that hosting sportscenter centers in the evening absolutely sensational sportscenter anchor along. Were Golf analyst ambience. He just doesn't offer the family. My honor and privilege to talk to my man and my colleague. My buddy the great one himself. Scott Van Pelt is on the line with me right now. What's going on big time? How are you sir man? Great things are things are a good lot of exciting stuff going on On my end of the world lately in we're thankful solo all of that always happy when when we cross paths. It is fun to be the guy on the other side of the of of being asked questions as opposed to asking you the questions. I enjoyed this. That's right that's right and and I hope you continue to enjoy it because let's get right to it before I even get into some sports. Talk that we've talked about. What does this I'm hearing about? You would a new podcast. It started yesterday the ESP pod. Talk to me about that a little bit. I mean you've got enough on your plate buddy was going on with this. Who are you really telling me? I have enough on my plate. The man that has that has figured out a way to to maximize his ability to be seen and heard across the airwaves and and being really an all in all regards. Look you know what it is and this is the truth radio and you do you do it all you do you. Do you do sports center. You do I take you do whatever you're everywhere everywhere but but radio give you the latitude right and the wiggle room to really go on something and TV man like when you're doing sportscenter on Wednesday ahead of the NBA. That time gets away from you quick. And you know before you blink. You're just starting to get going and then you're out of time. Well a podcast is gonNA give the room to to go and I mean there's no breaks I don't have any commercial breaks. I don't have to do those radio. resets reminding people who are listening to this that and the other thing. If I WANNA talk just go oh and so. The opportunity to to get back into that space was exciting and so we did our first yesterday and We had I I spoke to my Tony Tony Kornheiser about about the fact sports central moving down to Washington DC. I'll be getting back home In the in August For football next year so we got talk about that which is exciting as well. But it's just it's just fun to get back in in a space where you have as much space as you'd want. What can people expect expect from you when they listen to you your pockets? I mean they. Obviously everybody was listening to you when you were doing radio a few years ago because you have done it all I wanna WanNa know what you missed about it. Most I know you just alluded to it but I want to know if you could elaborate on what you missed about most and what do you find yourself doing now with this podcast that you may not have done when you were hosting your own radio show a few years ago. The best example I can give is like we had. It was really cool last year. The playoffs We have Patrick. Beverley come on you know Patrick. He's he's his stories is auto came out. The mud came out the mud. As they say right didn't wasn't a five star Guy Guy didn't have a past if it's some others has but he made it and and we talked to him after he got his. You know. Got The bag and got that big contract and We got going. We're talking for a few minutes and I said my final question Patrick. He was like he was offended. He's like final question like down the hill to talk to you and I started laughing. I realized you know five minutes. That's not worth it. That's not worth the drive so I think what what what I WANNA do is really get into stuff. You know you start talking to Patrick. We're television doesn't allow us to talk about overseas talk about being you know maybe overlooked slept on however you WanNa put it you know and really talk about getting to to the point where he is now he was a great example of somebody. We must have talked for fifteen twenty minutes but on sportscenter we got you know got maybe the best five or six minutes. Well I want I want the people here all of it. It's the good the bad you know really exploring the conversation that you can have with someone. That's really interesting like him And maybe like maybe Also a musician. Maybe somebody totally off the beaten path. Could maybe it's an active. Maybe musician. Maybe it's an author I I don't know but podcast give you that latitude to really talk talk to people that the interest you people who inspire you That you can you know. Keep your listener company when they're on the train driving to work or you know putting the key after I put the kids to. I bet at night whenever they can find you and I laugh Stephen I mean like the world needs another cat. God knows everybody's got one you know but I just through my head and it's interesting you say that we're talking to Scott Van Pelt right here with Steven A.. On the Stephen Smith Show. ESPN RADIO ESPN news. Because you give commentary on Sportscenter as well you don't just do a good the job hosting a great job hosting it and doing interviews and going over highlights but you also have awesome commentary as well. I find that the commentary that I give on the radio you which basically comes extemporaneously. I mean it comes off the cuff. Most of the time. I'm no you know you know the information and you just reacting to respond to it and then you just you your spill wanted wanted. That actually helps me when I go on I do. You anticipate that during the podcast will make you even better. If that's imaginable that make even better at hosting hosting sportscenter once you get back into the world of audio. I think so. And it's kind of you to say it. I mean I think there's no question Stephen Eight that the doing radio radio helped me figure out how to tighten up my chops on television and then the ability to to like to talk about them on television and then think okay. Well when I have room then I'll take it back over to a place where I've got more. I mean all I did on on my first podcast really was talking about the national title. Talk about it. Does your guy that was was laugh out. Was the punchline. People thought he was a clown. But you know who's laughing now. He was the perfect guy at the perfect time. And and I took some of the elements of what happened on Sportscenter to the podcast. There's no question and I and it doesn't surprise me to hear you say what you just said that that on on radio it's it helps you be better at first take and vice versa. Look we're all in the content business and certain certain lanes require you to provide the content in a different way and I as I've said now several times I just I amidst the lane where I had all the room I wanted to go And it's my hope anyway if that's what happens if that's the people know what to to get they know what they're gonna get from me me In one space. Maybe they'll get something a little different in the podcast world. So that's my hope. Anyway there's veep Scott Van Pelt helps new podcast is now available on his first episode. Scott here's from Tiger Woods Matthew mcconaughey and Tony Kornheiser check out new episodes every Tuesday. Wherever you you listen to his podcast as V part by the way on another note sportscenter? Now you've been doing it from Bristol all of these years you move into the nation's capital my man tell us about that I mean they're Scott van pelt in the nation's capital why the nation's capital Scott Van Pelt and and. Are we going to see anything different there than we've been seeing in Bristol leads us maybe Look you're from New York City right. I mean we know that you're from Hamas rice so when so when you take back from Bristol to to to where you're from That's that's a beautiful thing to get back his home his home. And I've said a million times Stephen Awol from somewhere. And that's where I'm from you know I'm from AH SAY DC. Just I'm just north of Maryland. But you know to. DMV's all kind of the same thing and so you know. I asked our bosses that that will be a possibility and they were very gracious to consider it and so starting next year for football we'll be back at home. We'll be doing things from there and look I am. I'm a proud. ESPN ESPN lifer. And I'm proud of Bristol and it'll still be Bristol. The home base but we don't get a chance to to cross paths with as many people in Bristol as we can't in Washington DC see. Let's just be honest about that. There's more people who come through and so my hope is that we can take advantage of who is in DC in terms of sitting down. It'd be face to face with some of these Athletes where Now we just simply don't have that opportunity so my hope is that That will lend itself to to to more face to face time with with these folks because as you know those conversations are just better when you're face to face and I just think the idea of being all man being close to family that can only help you know your soul and make hugh happier human being and so that's I'm really really grateful that they were willing to give me that opportunity. And we're going to try to continue to elevate and magnified the stories and try to lift him up and and do do it the way we do. It couldn't get couldn't think of a better answer than that. We're talking to the Great Scott Van Pelt right here with Steven A.. ESPN RADIO RADIO ESPN. Let's get into some of this the sports business. Because you've been all over it as out as I this scandal involved in the Houston Astros ultimately the GM managers Fide Alex. Cora was the bench coach for twenty seven world series champion Houston Astros and then was the manager for the two thousand eighteen world series champion. Boston Red Sox is now been released. They say mutually agreed to part ways of what you listen to all of reports and obviously he was on his way out the door because of the scandal. What do you make of this? How bad had is all of this for the Sport Baseball guestimation Scott before we start? I JUST WANNA know. When part ways became the new way we say got you but fire by like?.

"Been documented. But I'm glad to hear that, thank you for, for the delivering that message onto the listeners. All right. You knew your address Callaway, golf dot com right now. Get this driver in your bag. Let's go back to Scott van pelt. I'm gonna do bad interview technique here, Nasc kind of several questions at once but I think they kind of go together, and that has the longer the longer, you do this has become easier to relate to athletes, and is it easier to ask them tough questions as gotten gotten easier over time. And are there any athletes you've been kind of intimidated to interview over time? I. No, I'm not. I'm not getting nobody's intimidating. I mean it's less. Oh, certainly overtime because now I'm older than them, you know, and you meet people that maybe they've, they've watched USA to, they think, you know, guys will say nice things on or whatever else you what are you even talking about? Like if. It's being show. It's not it's not one hundred. It keeps the sense that people have bet of like talking seven who feels like a stranger to them. You know, you do it while some, they have some idea who it is talking to. And I think what I'm good at is making a conversation on. I don't I don't expired to make it like I'm a bad interview. 'cause I talked too much, but I'm a good interviewer because I make people comfortable, and I think comfortable people former likely to, to be themselves. I I'm marble at a guy like love it's hard who just takes the construct of an interview, and just punts throws it entirely out the window, and he'll lead with with non sequiturs about nothing and they're so disarming by the time, it's over the first news, talk and maybe his goal was to get to a question. It's like five minutes in, but he's asking questions about nothing and to get what he wants, and I've never even asked that specific question. But I listen to them talk to people and, and going on his show. Oh, where I'm supposed to talk about the masters, and we don't even get there for five minutes. But I realize it's all sort of way he doesn't. I my that because my goal is to, to try to make any conversation with people comfortable. And when people are comfortable, I find that they're more willing to take on the question that isn't one that they want to have to answer. But if they're in a place where they don't have their guard of at least gonna be going to make sense. Oh, without a doubt. I think it's, it's super easy to sit. He to sit somewhere and just read questions to somebody, but that, you know, that doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna get the best answer out of somebody having him feel comfortable and lead them kind of leading them somewhere to a level of trust to get you. You know, such a better back and forth. I always say it's gonna listen that Vang that's thing. Interviewers do a lot do many things poorly. Many don't ask questions. They just make statements drive you nuts. If you listen to an interview you'll hear still and say, man really went crazy this quarter. Talk about it. Talk about the third quarter. Oh, okay. How about asked me what happened in the third quarter Saint thing. I mean I'm not I'm not that mu-. My question is some brilliant thing. At least I'm asking you to tell me something as opposed to just making a statement. But you said the most important thing that interviewers don't do. That's listen. Because if you ask me something, and I said, well, you know, there was.

"And that's and that's totally fair, especially if you went into the week with an agreement. Just seventy five nothing for coach to write the check just Senate seventy five in any in your desk events. It's not as normal caddy's got. So what if what if I present you with this scenario where Kuchar won the tournament, despite the caddy meeting, the caddy's telling them, hey, you two hundred out here's an eight iron and Kuchis go, and I can't hit two hundred right? And he is so couture's is pulling out the club's not the Gaddi with. And this is done now that Stu gods, that's an entirely fair and reasonable discussion to have because maybe he won. If spite of the fact that he's getting the wrong numbers. Guys. Re degrees says it breaks left and right right at the end of the week. And the guy was castrophe. But he wanted to fight him. That's the part. We don't know. And we do this thing where we wanna shame. Shame. Shame. I'm just so here's the thing at the end of it to write a guy that check for that number. I it it doesn't get his his his, you know, ability to go to the ATM and withdraw hundred you know, he's fine. Just just carry on. You know, it's. The. But here's a problem. It's to rate like everybody's already decided he's cheap bastard, and they're gonna end, and that's what they've decided so him writing that number now doesn't buy that back. See see what I'm saying? Put it on the scroll Scott van pelt calls cooter a cheap bastard. Like, that's what it sounded. Like, you are the responsible guy, you're clean here. We're the ones in the sewage. How do we bury this guy? How how do we bury the cheap bastard like by creating so much public pressure that he can't stand it anymore? And he has the help the poor, Cathy Ames co-chairman. He'll he'll probably I mean, I don't know if it's too late. But I'm saying that that's the public perception your you're feeling that trying to use me saying that I did it, and that's not gonna work. But there's you you've you've done your part. You've you you, you know through the bat signal here. I am telling you I'm giving a guy number like to me. That's that's a reasonable by outline ask you day laboratories is the. Man. I'm rolling in the sewage is if he writes that number we good, can you say he did what was right and you move onto your next target or call him only after being shamed. Correctly by Scott van pelt in a public forum. Did he summon the strength to actually know what what a deeply by an achieve one to boot? Even ven pelt is going after me on the radio. Can I ask a question that would be much like you do I have twenty seconds to ask a question or some gyp shin lover you get one one of one of the I want to ask the question as a Logan this be better for the local hour. But as a tourist who comes up to to to south beach rarely how do I get out of south beach without having to take fifty minutes to get five blocks to merge on the road. You can't you can't guy. That's my day every death travel by there. Yeah. That's it. I'm gonna copter helicopter submarine. But yes, it's very crowded. I thought about the the copter, but I mean, I've need couture money to do that. And I'll have to. Thank you, Scott. We appreciate it. We're. Gonna send you and your weekend. "He's talking about doing the right thing. Like in terms of people at ESPN because we can be polarizing the gas bags, but then pelts one of the likable guys. It's Kirk Shan. It's more like the decency rankings when he's crushing you. Okay. You're a turt-. And so and so so. Shipping container. Where is Scott van pelt on the on the rankings in terms of just fundamentally decent people at ESPN right behind me. I mean, I got them right right behind Kirk. I mean, I can't put on ahead of Kirk. He knows that. He understands me. I I have Tim I have Linda Cohn. I have Bob Lee. And then maybe S P P. What I'm what I'm way I'm with bodily window way above way, above them. It's true. I was just gonna say that Bob Lee can be prickly. He can be don't tell anybody. Don't tell him. I think you're on it with more more, certainly in a tough more and more also beats I think he more interest in terms of being decent. Randy, Scott, sneaky kind. Yes. But I feel. I haven't this is not an internal info. I think I've seen something in terms of q scores Scott, then pelt is the top. Okay. So what's the right amount? Scott don't do. And you just did it. Right. You could sign number of why they came back with an extra fifteen thousand dollars. So they upped twenty thousand that's not enough. I don't what. Okay, as the fundamentally decent guidance and conscience of this company. One is that split split the difference? It would have been one thirty for the win. And you said you're paying him five for the week. So that would have put just so it you should be at seventy but make it more to say seventy five and we move on hooters made a ton of money, and he was just saying Kuchis have good guy. He's he's he's a decent and great family guy. Went likes guy. This is just a fumble. This is is is a three putt put it in a horrible golf pun here. He's just he missed the Mark here. Give the guy seventy five grand call it a day..
Tiger Woods: Call it a comeback, but don't be surprised
"In the last decade. Tiger Woods still has as many PGA tour wins as Dustin Johnson. And tiger was away not playing for five of those years. Okay. So Scott van pelt is with us. Now what we just saw yesterday can can be announced. Does it have to be a major like it seems pretty clear that tiger's playing tiger Gulf right now. Yeah. For sure I mean, he has for much of the year and. All you laughed, and we talked about what it would take for tiger to be sort of in five by the populace as back or or his popularity to be whenever level. I thought it would take one one major. And I just I think the reaction we saw yesterday. Not a major but a very elite albeit small field. I think tells you yes, he's he's he's he occupies a space occupies in terms of people's courts in mind, which is really actually fascinating to a lot of his. Changes to the level of love, and and the level of to people have they just wanted to see him do this again and that scene on eighteen yesterday. I tweeted something about it. And I believe this to be true. I believe there's one athlete in sports. They could create that scene in an attempt. What do you think about the conversation? You had with him afterward. Did what was interesting about it? He's he's genuinely moved by the level of love people have for him. And I mean, I I've known him a long time, and I've seen all sorts of incarnations of his personality and his level looks status, and I told him years ago, it some version of it. It feels good to let people hug you. If you let them meaning fans that don't don't I get the television that get boxing out. I get it. It serves a purpose. But just let people love you. And this time around he's clearly appreciating and tapping into that he told me in a portion of the that we didn't actually use on the television. I think dot com. I don't know. But he said that this support has helped him he said, it is absolutely helped me during rounds to do better than I might have done otherwise and he blocked out in the past. And now he's using it as as like fuel in a video game or something. And I I think that's great. I think it's just it's reveals a more human side to a guy that for a long term. I think tempted to push that away for whatever we've got. There is something to be said for for dance. I question because I think everyone used the phrase Tigers back he's back. He's back. And I think when we talked about tiger being back. I think we all magin it'd be hand putting on a green jacket and the Butler cabin. That would be tiger. That would six something like that. Clearly playing well enough to do that. There's no nobody has it done it. Yeah. I understand. But right now, Scott if I make the masters tomorrow, who's the favorite and how close is he to being the favourite? But he is right now and part of that has to do with just he's he's also a singular sort of threat to Vegas because more people will bet on him than anybody in a few wins in that level of exposure to the houses problem, but his level of play would be sex Dickey be a rightful of favorites if not the favorite one of the favorites. And I mean look at this year guys like when he majors really hard. He he made us forget that. But at the open he had the lead on the back nine, and he kinda freaked out and have one moment where he slipped up in the guy he was playing with didn't make a single bogey any lost the Molinari's. And then he was right there in the mix at the PGA. But couldn't quite catch Brooks KEPCO who won two majors this year. So I think those are the reminders of of like, there's a there's a there's a race of golfer that he has spawned these Frankenstein people like Brooks who who are big and an athletic and all these guys like, you know, just the speed and the days. Thomas is in all these guys they were spawned by tiger. So now he has to he has to compete with them. And it'll be hard to be all of those people. I mean, it's hard to win a major any any time. But he's you know, he's on the other side of the fused background go, blah, all all of this just to say winning a major will be difficult. But there's no reason to think that he won't be there with the chance certainly starting

"Two. Big, big, three thousand eight hundred thousand. Got you. Get without. I just heard people yelling, but whatever you guys think is good. I'm on board. Eight hundred thousand times bigger. Vad anyway us. Got, you know, tiger very well. I'm wondering from your from your vantage boy. What's the main difference between tiger now and tiger back in, let's say, two thousand. Just to read the reality. The re the realization of hair. Yeah, hair, yes. He's his para, tragic. What is the real? The real answer is just the the the perspective that comes with the scars and and the perspective that comes with having kids that you wanna make proud and you know game. That's the part of the redemptive story. It's interesting. Yeah, the back is not his art art, his isn't his doing. The other things are, but that makes him more fair more accessible as Dan said and far more real and relatable. 'cause we've all screwed up and he has to. So I just think I think the appreciation that it was gone and he gets to be reminded of what it feels like to be in the arena into win, would it feels like to have that level of adulation and what else seem on eighteen yesterday? It was clear that that one, he told San Steve, sands on on NBC like like he had a hard time whole that to get the old tiger would have been so far removed from from those feelings that he couldn't even tap into. One could see it on the last on the last happen. I thought it was going to cry over the whole Scott. I. Yeah, I I was wishing for just go ahead and let it happen because no one is going to hold it against you. If anything, they're gonna love you more because they're gonna see like gods, like superman, really. He bleeds cries any weeps, but he flew again, you know, like he freaking flu. Again, he doesn't show us emotion. He just, I mean, it can be a little bit of defiance or it could be are used to show us a little bit of defiance or a little bit like of adrenaline. He doesn't show us what he. I mean, it was a flash Scott. I thought he was going to start crying as soon as he picked up his ball after tapping in dot. Got I thought so too. But I mean, he, he still, he still has that ability to to to deny what the rest of probably wouldn't. I don't know where that comes from or how. How does 'cause you know, joy lacob. It's it's into a different mode when that's his. That's as close as I've ever seen. I mean, I think more major, you know, to gets to fifteen, and then it happens that I don't know. Maybe maybe he starts to remind himself, you know it. It feels more normal again, and he keeps those things get further suppress. I don't know that that part I don't really know, but it was, I don't know. I thought it was a remarkable thing to witness and that that that scene on eighteen is one that I just shake my hurt. It was like old time grew shope and stuff when we just when people just ran wherever they chose to check out Scott van pelt every night here, weekdays he's doing a show that's as good as anything that's ever been done at ESPN Scott. Thank you, sir. Appreciate your time. I appreciate that. It's over the topic very kind. Congratulations by the way I'm thrilled with thank you buddy. Jatene Cha-ching time for some ads. You like. Only two quarterbacks have lost despite throwing for three hundred and fifty plus yards. Five touchdowns and zero interceptions in the last thirty years, he li- manning and Matt Ryan. Both of them lost drew Brees. The better side of the day in that one, I don't know if it's as good as app, but it's pretty good in the last decade. Tiger Woods still has as many PGA tour wins as Dustin Johnson and tiger was away not playing for five of those years. Okay. So Scotman pelt is with us. The three. Not at the level of love and and the level of want to people have. They just wanted to see him do this again and that scene on eighteen yesterday. The road-weary Boston Celtics face their toughest challenge yet
"For just the way the game has been played and i've been able to be successful game six tonight in cleveland cavs hosting the celtics game seven would be in boston on sunday night paul pierce from the jump bond sportscenter scott van pelt says look the celtics need to be ready for fullscale lebron in game six back against the wall he's gonna step up you know just like two thousand eight game seventy care forty five so they have to be ready for that just mentally physically just a whiff stan lebron's run because he's gonna he's gonna leave it all out there and just like in game six when he was with the miami heat in two thousand twelve he came in the boston and put one of those greater games on so boston has to be prepared for that not only in game six if they don't win that game but game seven also in the boston garden because he's done it before he went into the boston garden had a tremendous game so they gotta know it's going to be tough to put lebron james team out of the playoffs game six tonight in cleveland the series is on the brawn we we spend a lot of time you know discussing tyron lose substitution patterns and should kyle korver have played more in you know can they squeeze a little bit more out of guys like tristan thompson or can they get anything from jr smith those things matter but ultimately not that much we're not talking about them if lebron is great tim legler espn nba analyst on the six pm sportscenter yesterday last night says ultimately this series falls on lebron and not his teammates the problem is you have to look at the limitations of their personnel so for me it does fall abroad james he might need to more forty point games to get through this round if that's what it takes because when you look at the rest of the guys on their team for the most part they are one dimensional offensive players everything is predicated on lebron james ability to score create offense for them i said it all season i don't think i've ever seen a team more dependent upon one player.
