"Skill. Good afternoon. I'm Pat Thurston. I'm in for chip Franklin today. We've got a lot to talk about. But I do want to take this opportunity to tell you. I hope if you're traveling today to celebrate thanksgiving that you're really careful. Those roads are slippery. And slick, and I love the rain has come. But it makes other hazardous conditions. So please, please please careful now let's get started. You know, I just said that the rains have come, and I am so delighted about this for two reasons. One because of the air quality here in the bay area, which has been so dreadful when I took my daughter to basketball practice this morning, she she checked the air quality. It was forty four in Marin such an improved. Yes. Indeed. It's been so awful. But the other is specifically about the campfire up north. What is the status have the rains helped? So joining us to talk about that. And give us the the. Lowdown on it is Scott McLean. He is the deputy chief at Cal fire. Scott. Thank you so much for being with us this afternoon. Thank you for having me. And Scott, are you guys welcoming the rain to is it helping your efforts? It is kind of a catch twenty two actually. Definitely that moisture nears stifling the fire. Got a good handle on it. Containment here pretty soon. However were that part was burning. Most recently is up in the mountains where it says steep topography, basically a real rough area. Right. Order to get in those areas. We take a bulldozer and cut line. And the engines and fire engines and crews walk in drive in certain areas. So that dirt is no mud, and it's not flat. So that makes it difficult to you to get for you to get into the areas, you still need to get into our there. Fires burning in those areas. Pretty much. No, we do need to make sure that we get ahold of all the hot spots because those areas that you know, might be sheltered. So they're not getting that precipitation, the tree stub the trees burned down into their stumps and into systems at times as well. So testers underground believe it or not so realistically, we need to get into those areas when it seems to do so to make sure there's nothing at all that will reach Hindle possibly throw an amber crossed that line. Is that when you talk about hotspots is that what you're talking about is that it goes underground with the roots of the trees. Yes. It can't or an area. That's maybe sheltered from the rain that might just have enough. Branch might be something else. It's still burning in that could start something anew. Yeah. So so have all the evacuations been lifted now in the campfire area. No, no. Aries has as you can imagine what's involved say is talk about. So you can tell. Know didn't say that in some cases, I in paradise, right? Hauser's utilities are trying to protect infrastructure back into place. The utilities inspectors just a myriad of folks that are in there, then you have the hazards piece of property. I mean think about what's in your house and your garage as far as chemicals just for one example to lose a lot of hazards out there. Whether it be in. The. Structure of some sort close to what we say is look up look down and look. Yeah. No kidding. So is it. Your responsibility is Cal fire's responsibility to go in the all of those dangers before the evacuation is lifted or does that happen with the law enforcement agencies in the area or are you working in concert or how does that work? Groups that go in there, the law enforcement side and Stephanie controlling meet area, making sure that there's no looting other situations that are taking place you have other agencies that are in there under law enforcement that our the task of looking for more individuals that are bearish right? And I understand that the rains can actually make that recovery. The recovery of the people who are victims that makes that more difficult. From the dogs and all parts concerned. Rallied his troops. Immediately to get in there when it was safe to do. So to start the process you brought a lot of people in. Get some of those folks. So how how much are we talking about in terms of containment? What's what's the level? This morning was eighty percent. So it's been steadily climbing. So that's really good news. Rain is definitely going to help that aspects. So you're going to see some really good numbers for over. The course of the weekend as continue to climb and and your air quality up. There is also improving as ours is in the bay area. Seventy seven right now, we have very clear air. Scott. I saw report from somebody at it was more. Did I believe in the New York Times? It was somebody living in New York who was talking about the sunset there. And then she went online and saw that there's some sort of tracking from the fires in California. They have already the fi the smoke from these wildfires has traveled all the way across the United States that seems unfathomable to me. First day or the fire bringing all those stretches. So it's not just treat Russia as you're talking about all sorts of. The homes in the structures in stores. I mean, just say large stores with chemicals and everything else that's all going up into year, Sarah, very heavy products. And that's what we had to contend with for several days. First of all that smoke column sheared over and headed west towards the coast, and of course, Kristie down the valleys central valley as well as long the coastline. So. Yeah. Others that amount of smoke that we saw continued to see unbelievable. Okay. Finally, there are people listening, even though we broadcast from San Francisco, we have a very large broadcast area. There are people listening here who are up in the campfire area up in Chico. What kind of information do you want those people to have at this point? When you're eighty percent contained, but when you have rains that are creating a bit of a different dilemma. Right. I mean, the.

"We'll joining us. I today from northern California the site of the massive campfire as it's called is deputy chief, Scott McLean McLean. Excuse me. He is chief of information for the California Department of forestry and fire protection or Cal fire and he joins us from Chico, California. Scott mclean. Welcome to on point. Thank you. Thank you so much for taking some time to to join us today. First of all, can you just tell us sort of what is the status of the campfire right now? Did increase where the courses night or at two hundred twenty five thousand acres. Thirty percent contained and the containment has gone up. So that's good news even mind that it's very rugged terrain that these firefighters are having to deal with right now as well as the weather into certain aspects, but the weather is looking progressively much better as the days go on now the red tide. Worrying temp cancelled minimum watching the news this morning. We're looking probably three to five mph winds over most of the fire some gusts up to fifteen on other parts. So that's a lot less than there was before. Okay. Vegetation is still extremely dry humidity's continued to climb. We're getting really call humidity recovery over the course of nights when there's a little bit more moisture in the air, which impedes the fire as well. So can you tell us a little bit about what this fire is like I mean, we heard that clip a little earlier from Nicole jolly. Resident in paradise about how close she came. To dying because of the fire. We know that they'll fire has claimed the lives of dozens of people. I mean, how large is it? How hot is it? I mean, have you seen anything like this in your experience? No, I was in the middle of it. The first day was while the firefighters and law enforcement. It was nighttime. It basically night day turn into night starting about nine o'clock in the morning. And that's where it stayed for the rest of the day into the night, of course times. He just could not see you know in those in front of your face. It was that smokin. I have to say if you don't mind me saying, I you you and your fellow firefighters are working so hard. I can hear the fatigue in your voice right now. So our our firefighters getting the support they need are there. Enough people. Tell us a little bit about that. Overall as far as we're getting sixteen between sixteen and seventeen states are sending us resources into the state of California earlier this year about the same. So and we had own up just under fourteen thousand individuals assigned to the fires earlier on this year. We're dealing with basically three fires down the down. The too far is the Wilby and the and the campfire. Of course, we're going to see a lot more resources containing to come in to support us. The firefighters definitely are giving it their all they know what it's at stake. And they wanna take care of that situation are mitigated ASAP for the public that we are. Yeah. Mr. McClean one more question for you. Does it is it fair to say that it seems as if California now has crossed into having a fire season that doesn't end we don't have the fire season. There's no season anymore. Meaning meaning what year round we have on average that folks don't realize right now and not a part of this year. We have roughly anywheres from a hundred to two hundred wildland fire starts every week on average, and those are kept relatively small ten acres or less. So it's a constant battle right now. I believe it last week. We bought one hundred Mary Thursday. We're about one hundred eleven starts. I'll be getting the stance on again this morning on what we're looking at us whereas today up to date. So it's a constant fight. What's that doing to the state? In reference to. Well. I mean is it. I mean, California's a huge important state, but I it can can the state cope with being in a in a endless fire season. It's difficult, and I'm not gonna you know, make it any less important. We ought to work together. It's a team effort due to the public law enforcement. Ours hers is up and down the state, we have tastic system in place called master mutual aid system..

Quite a ways to go I, know the weather is not helping at all What do you I mean I've been there during the, cedar fire and some other things. Around San Diego and that, was bad enough this I mean as fires go those, were much compared to? What you're, dealing with now what do you attribute I mean why? Is this, thing just continuing to spread in burn I mean I know it's difficult. To get containment, lived in Colorado for a while and you know there are some simply because of the terrain that was. Radic weather's develops so quickly it caused a further move so quickly unfortunately firefighters and four civilians lost their lives In west reading I know this is this is not easy, to talk about but throughout, all of California with all the wildfires in the spreading in the evacuations I understand some people wouldn't evacuate What, what are we looking at as far as loss of life with civilians and first responders Year to date. Since January. First eight. Civilians have lost their lives due? To wildfires as well as for firefighters that's that's that's, tough it's what are we looking at I know. A lot of. Tonight so he was trying to? Get a hold of some friends and hadn't been able, to get a hold of them in a couple. Of days but. That's probably not unusual correct That's not unusual I mean we we're looking at one point over fifty two thousand individuals throughout the state evacuated roughly thirty eight thousand just, on a car hire alone. So Yeah the vegetation, so receptive as, far as being so. Fast that it's people have little time to escape yeah I, I'm looking at a map of the fires right now and I mean literally. San Diego north. California is, burning I know that they set up a, evacuation shelters and whatnot but I also heard that one of the evacuation shelters they had to. Evacuate I, wouldn't be surprised yeah, it's that's. How, fast moving. Trout the state there's a lot of fires that are being Pamela cranston's looking however the. Ferguson, outside, of Yosemite continues to grown and then yesterday before yesterday. We had four, fires developed to, get cold within an. Hour each other in northern California unfortunately those four contained and, or are getting contained so it's very dynamic the fires growing size very rapidly Well I, know that At one point in time, and in San Diego I was watching the fires that would crush the, hill. And, you'd think okay well that's a long way away, in an hour later you're loading your horses up in the trailer to try and take them to del mar next to the ocean. Because it's overrun everything it's, these fires. Move very? Very, quickly don't they Right now, especially this year more so than ever you are correct what's your your primary focus talking with Scott McLean deputy chief with Cal fire. Talking about fires burning literally, from San. Diego north I mean the. The entire state seems to be touched? By, this in some way what's your primary focus I mean with so many different fires Mean how do you go about prioritizing That's very good it's has to. Do with life safety for an example one of the fires on the Mendocino complex. Has a, known divert on air tankers receiving words the fixed wing. Aircraft were assigned to the river fire they could not divert to any. Other fires until certain situations are mitigated? Was that fire. Around those, humidity's involved keep in mind that We've. Got over, sixteen states United States century sources are sending resources to. California with her fight national guard both air and on the ground are, heavily involved as they always are with? Us in this fight Up to twelve Of troops on the ground that are taking care of the situation as well How do you train people that quickly What's the guard we, have trains early in the year aircraft especially I had the chance. To go and watch aircraft and helicopters earlier this year. We put California individuals in the aircraft To help manage the situation the troops who's. Had trainings with, the troops poised ham crew's coming online Yeah Again having worked out of San, Diego the helicopters with water buckets in fixed wing with a retardant, drops something you, see generally every, year but never have I ever seen anything this expansive that has touched so many people and burned up so much so much, acreage it's a. Man, listen first of, all our thoughts and prayers go out to. Everybody And it's, just I I. Can't, imagine having to, fight this thing on so many different fronts Yeah it's it's. Very trying to say the least well all the best Scott McLean deputy chief with Cal fire we. Had several calls from. People calling and wanting to know where it is and what's, going on and this, is, tough, then, keep, a, positive, thought, for these people because you know. I'm looking at one two three four five six seven eight. Nine over eighteen now different fires they're trying to fight and these aren't, just little grass fires these are. Major fires burning up hundreds of thousands of acres and unfortunately taking some lives along the. Way so. If you're selling Klein throughout of, prayer and keep some positive. Thoughts for these folks. All right I'm Rick Roberts in for Eric Gary McNamara and Eric.
