"There is no need for the military. We already have first of all militarized police departments. Then you can add the National Guard, and then you're going to bring the military, and on top of it. It is political. It's posturing and it is probably one of the worst things he could do to our country right now. I just wanted to say for everybody to understand and this is in the same Wall Street. Journal editorial quoting the Commissioner for intelligence. In The New York Police Department, we believe that a significant amount of people who came here looting, and all the rest of it came from outside advance preparation scouts they use of encrypted information resupply routes for gasoline, and and all that he said he said there's a strong indicator they plan to act disorder property damage, violence, violent encounters. He said of all the arrests hundreds of arrests, since the twenty eighth of May, one in every seven were from outside of New York masterpieces. Connecticut Pennsylvania New Jersey Iowa Nevada, Virginia Maryland Texas and Minnesota suggesting extensive coordination? What can you do as Congress and? The speaker of the House Nancy. Pelosi has given the congressional black. Caucus. The authority to seek solutions and come up with an aggressive response to the violation of African American, civil and human rights. What can you do about this issue for instance? because. They're being blamed for the looting. Absolutely, and I I think that that is very sad. There have been many exchanges first of all. It is wonderful to see so many white young people out protesting in solidarity. The protests are an absolute rainbow. People of every ratio Rupe are out, but when you do have groups who are not from the area and were not African American then Gra, feeding and using the names black. Black lives matter and all of that as an excuse to push another agenda whether it's to the right or the Left I. think that's very unfortunate. You should know that members of the Black Caucus have been working on police. Accountability Issue I, I'm sad to say, but for decades the only thing that's new now is that people have cell phones and that they can actually document. Abuse and murders that have been taking place forever that African Americans have been pleading and crying and trying to get a policy fixes that now the entire world can see what goes on, and so given that members have been working on a legislative package for a long time. We're pulling those bills together right now, and we will be introducing bills very soon. We have a hearing coming up. Up In judiciary on Wednesday, the congressional black, caucus will be in Washington. DC NEX- next week. We are attending the more memorial service on Thursday and Mineola in Minneapolis, and in Houston on Tuesday George Floyd was from Houston, so there will be two services will be attending all of those wild. We're working on pulling our bills together and we will introduce a comprehensive package on police accountability. So. Let me just play what Vice President Biden said today to this to this account to what you're talking about. He said no more delay. No more excuses and he's asking Congress to work specifically, and and this is what he said. Take a listen congresswoman. I call the Congress. ACT This month. Are.

There's a lot to be done, and there's a lot of promise that the people have not been able to see fulfilled. Look beazer intersectional issues again I just want to remind folks I think this this this this the fact that all of these issues are compounding that we have the arrest in America on top of the coronavirus pandemic that has created both a public health crisis and an economic crisis, an economic crisis, frankly those tracking to be worse than the Great. Depression, there is real unrest here I mean in the vice engages speech today in Philadelphia Pennsylvania at the at the heart in the founding of the democracy of America, just a couple miles up the road from where he was the average income of. Of folks in North Philadelphia is nine, thousand, seven, hundred eighty three dollars a year, so there is some deep deep deep economic hurt their that is contributing again number of things that we see the answer to that and the Vice President Biden US look fourth is that we have to? Yes, to address criminal justice reform issues, and those are things that he spoke to today and will continue to speak to, but we have a public health crisis. We have to address the inequities public health system under his plan for Biden. CARE does that. We also have to address the that exist. That have crippled communities from being to being able to create and build wealth so under Vice President Biden's plan for Black America. "Turning now to an Academy Award winning actor whose work includes the Shawshank redemption and mystic. River Tim Robbins. Career has been a constant constant dialogue between advocacy and artistic expression his most recent play the new colossus pays homage to the immigrants and refugees. Who who came to find a better life in America and also to shape this nation over the centuries? Let's take a look was born in other mature. I was born in Moscow. Oh in the Soviet Union Iran Dot La Vietnam Stuttgart Germany Walker Polian Yugoslavia. The Gun Mahyco tenses parish Louisiana Borneo Malaysia. Budapest Hungary refugee in the year. Nineteen seventy-nine wounded in Beijing. Nineteen percents in in two thousand seventeen. The place title comes from the iconic. Emma Lazarus sonnet inscribed on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal. I talk with the Oscar winning actor director here in New York to talk about this play and some of his. Life's Work Tim Robbins. Welcome to the program. Thank you thanks for having so we started with this exert from your current play Colossus on stage and it's really quite moving particularly in this age where suddenly the fear. The hatred of the foreign is dominant in our culture and in our democracies even. What made you want to do that? And now well we started at about four years ago we were. It was during five years ago. There on the Syrian crisis started talking amongst ourselves. Because at the time I remember there's a lot of rhetoric in the media media about These are potential terrorists and so the play new Colossus is twelve actors Speaking in twelve different languages from from twelve different time periods telling the story of their immigration and It is a story that unifies us. It is our story every time we do it in Los Angeles at our theater. We have a little map in the lobby and we asked people to put magnetic pins in this map of the world To where their ancestors came from and every night in our small theater in Los Angeles the entire world was represented and it started to. We started understand how incredibly diverse our audiences audiences were. But how what a what a gift. That wasn't. How probably only place in the world that you could see that and so then you know at the end of the play I come out and then I ask you share a story with us of a of a relative and the stories? We're here are incredible. Incredible Woman says I want to tell you this story. About American soldier. He was a part of a troop liberating a concentration camp at Buchenwald and he sees this woman start to falter and so he starts to run towards her to to to catch her for she falls. I mean Sargent yelled at him. Stand down so there you know he. He didn't listen any any caught the woman before she felt carried her to the field hospital got in trouble and then when he's out of trouble when visited this woman and this woman at our theater tells me that was my mother and my father. Wow these stories are out there this story an at this divisive time time when we're finding so how many reasons to have differences to be able to be in an audience and have the audience share this experience with us but then to share their own experience variance and to understand that the people they've been sitting with for the last hour and a half share a story with them whether it's this generation or five generations integrations ago. We all have this common DNA. I mean you know not put a fine point on it but obviously the name refers to the poem by Malaysia. It was put on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and each night in your performance and actress or an actor reads reads the poem including we have to remember the nut graph so so to speak. Give me your tired your poor your huddled masses yearning to breathe free the wretched refuse of your teaming. Shore send these the homeless tempest toss to me. I lift my lamp beside ride the golden door so recently president trump's chief of immigration Cancun Cinelli had his own take on it in which he said. Give me your tired and your poor or who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge. What do you think you'll audiences would say to that? Well first of all be where. A politician The tries to rewrite a poet. This is politics. This is why they are limiting and restricting refugees historic low low. Here's what I would say there is this. DNA let's call it a DNA collected DNA and it is first of all the person that said. No the person that said No. I will not tolerate famine. No I will not tolerate religious oppression or fashion or Nazism and risk their life to leave that to find a better future for themselves. There were those that didn't they didn't survive that. DNA did not survive and then you consider they took this dangerous journey and found their way to a border and were able to get past it and and survive sometimes arduous Jewish journeys on boats across oceans. Some didn't make it that through. That journey then arrived at a port of entry here and somehow with nothing created a future. That's pretty rare individual and created a country and yes and created these future generations. Now shouldn't we be thinking about how extraordinary that is. How beautiful that is? How heroic that is that survival that individual that said no and then somehow create a future for his family? You also did Bob Roberts nearly thirty years ago and it has incredible parallels he the character with the current president's a mockumentary but nonetheless we you ahead of your time or were you reflecting doing stuff that had gone pause. I mean it is incredible that that character exists now in the White House it is. I'm sorry I was right. I Apologize You know you ask. How do you counteract this this division in this hatred? It's through humanity. That's the whole. That's what we do when we tell stories. We're trying to remind our audiences that we share something together you know hate is so easy in the abstract There's so many people you know I was just reading my twitter feed. And you know this so easy to sit behind a computer shooter somewhere and be hateful towards. Why do you have a twitter feed? Why are you reading it? Well that's a very good point curious. Yeah I it's like a drug. UGH I should stop doing but but I guess what I'm getting at. Is that there. When you're when you're telling a story to an audience audience when you're sharing an emotion when you're asking people to go on a journey with you in a in a dark room in a theater we find so much that unites us? There is so so much that we share so much we have in common and it for. It's been the strategy of politicians for years and back when I did Bob Roberts to to divide people to divide and conquer. It's a time honored tradition and it's something that unfortunately people fall for But I think artists exists to remind us that that is only one part of the equation and there is a much much more important profound connection that we all have have with each other so talking about the journey you are you amazed by the fact that Shawshank redemption which is probably one of the really major journeys that you've done on on screen and an in real life. Are you surprised that it has lasted this long. I mean it it. Didn't it wasn't a massive hit immediately and it evolved years twenty five years And it's I get reminded of it. Almost daily How important that film is to people? How profoundly affected them how some people says it shifted their consciousness that made them change their way of life? Art Can do that You know that's what we're all after a rare one and I feel blessed to be part of it so essentially it's about your character who is white guy obviously and wrongly accused and is in is in prison. Here's a little clip that we're going to play it and I must admit yeah. I didn't think much of that. First Time I made is on him. Clyde lied walk talk. That just wasn't home around their era places in the world made.
What will public hearings in impeachment inquiry accomplish?
"When it comes to the impeachment inquiry Republicans on Capitol Hill have grounded their criticism in the process oversight is not being done and we now have a full fledged impeachment committee in the basement of the capitol trying to put a ribbon on a sham process doesn't make it any less of a sham those are the voices of Republican congressman Devin newness and Jim Jordan thus far all the proceedings have been carried out behind closed doors next week though that changes to key witnesses will appear under oath and in open session bill Taylor the top US diplomat in Ukraine and former ambassador to Ukraine Marie you've on of it so what's that mean for congressional Republicans defending the president long time Republican strategist Scott Jennings is with us again Scott thanks for being here thank you good morning how does it how does this change of the Republicans concerns now that the hearings are going to be held in the so called light of day does that satisfy the critique well it will finally allow Republicans to make their case that somebody's Sir complaints against the president are partisan in nature but I don't think it's going to change the ultimate outcome I think the house is already essentially determine it is going to impeach the president so while it will satisfy some Republicans that they get the question the president's accusers on television I think we're headed for impeachment no matter what so brace for a Senate trial no matter what happens in these hearings my opinion may I ask the Republicans have argued as we just heard there that they haven't been given oversight I don't understand that claim because Republicans have been in everyone of these depositions and have been able to ask him questions yeah the Republican complaint is that because these are happening behind closed doors the only thing we know about what is being said is what is being selectively leaked by the committees to the news media so but on the other hands are on the committees right but none of the Republicans questioning of the witnesses is being leak in the context of the full context of the testimony so the essential complaint is you see what the Democrats want you to see but you don't get to see what we say to them or what they say to us now that will change when you have a public hearing and Republicans can ask questions but here to four that's been the complaint and and which is why in part Democrats release those transcripts of those kia pipe testimonies I want to ask about senator Lindsey Graham he's now saying he won't be reading any of these transcripts that have been released Anne's quote written the whole process off here's what he said to reporters yesterday but I can tell you about the trump policy toward the Ukraine it was incoherent it depends on who you talk to they seem to be incapable of forming a quid pro quo so now I find the whole process to be a sham and I'm not religious I mean the GOP response has evolved over time right for Sir was there was no quid pro quo than it was maybe there was a request but it was never executed than there were was the fact that or the argument that it's not an impeachable offense we've got Lindsey Graham now saying the administration's policy was so in coherent there could have been one yeah look as information is come out it's become clear that something happened know whether you consider that to be an impeachable quid pro quo whether you consider that to be a ham handed you know something else the the reality is something happened it strikes me that the correct Republican posture here would be to say yes something happened and Republican senators may consider that varying degrees of bad judgment but I doubt any of them are going to are going to conclude that this was an impeachable offense so I think the correct posture is just to say yes something dumb happened here this should have happened or whatever you wanna call it however they're comfortable calling it but they're all going to land on no impeachment and so it strikes me had to just acknowledge the facts and also acknowledge your position which is I just don't agree with Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff in the Democrats in the house that we should throw out of president over this issue the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani as as become a central figure he tweeted yesterday the investigation he did into Ukraine was quote done solely as a defense attorney to defend my client does not undercut the administration's claim that the work Giuliani was doing there was was about advancing US foreign policy interests in rooting out general Ukrainian corruption not benefiting trump yeah this is a good day having Giuliani inserted into the middle of this has been problematic from the beginning you know when you have a lawyer he supposed to get you out of trouble not get you into trouble in the president's lawyer in this particular case is not done him any favors and so I think hopefully the president the White House learned a lesson not to insert unelected appointed ambassadors a large into complicated foreign policy this is not good to have him in the middle of this and it has not helped the president won the Republican strategist Scott Jennings thinks your

"President trump spent a good part of his time this week attacking for democratic congresswoman his attacks both verbal and on social media have made these lawmakers representatives Alexandria across the Cortez ill Han Omar I Anna Presley and Rasheeda to leave the most visible Democrats in the country more visible in fact than the twenty plus Democrats who are running for president democratic analista mall Simmons is with us now he's worked as an adviser for several democratic candidates he also hosts a show on hill TV it's called why you should care good morning tomorrow good morning hello alright so let's revisit some of what has happened this very busy week the president held a rally in North Carolina on Wednesday and the crowd started chanting this about Congress woman Omar I think he is unifying his party and he is helping to fracture the Democratic Party in so if you're thinking of it purely tactically yeah I think fracture Democrats president trump get reelected in twenty twenty all right so that was not the right tape with the crowd started chanting was send her back send her back send her back the tape we heard there was GOP strategist Scott Jennings he was on the show yesterday and he told us he does not like this message because represented Omar is American but he said this is working to destabilize the Democratic Party do you think he's right I don't think is destabilizing the Democratic Party what it we're doing here is but the president is going after Democrats he is also energizing Democrats so the Democrats are really coming together around this idea of standing up against in a phobia you know what we seem from the Chinese exclusion act two of the ship that was turned around the Saint Louis that when the ship of Jewish refugees showed up the United States to what we saw in Charlotte's filled just in two thousand seventeen the president's actions are a long line in a long line of Xena phobic reaction this country has had to immigrants into into people were diverse and so Democrats recognize that and what you saw that two hundred thirty five member vote in the house tell you Democrats are fractured in fact all Democrats in the house of representatives voted against the president's words to defend the four women that the president attacked devoted to condemn his remarks is racist Yap me ask you something about a democratic unity or disunity this all started because last week speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi gun who kind of spot with this Congress women they oppose her approach to a border funding bill and then she criticized them in The New York Times do you think that rift is really over listen at progressive Democrats are trying to do something which is very different than I think what Nancy policies up to now because he's concerned about passing bills right and so when she says they only have four votes begin nessie blows his world that's what matters in the world of a Jana Presley in Alexandria Casio Cortez and the other women what they're doing is laying out something as a different course for Democrats at that this may be a little more long term it appeals to people out in the country and I think a lot of people in the country may be responding to that because for you can like it or you could not like it you can think is real or not real but the green new deal is now something that people are recognized that the Democrats have a climate change policy and people can decide how much of that climate change policy they want to be for or against that's something that Democrats across the country have been hungering for which is to have some have big bold ideas and big plans that will pass this year but may be something Democrats to achieve in the long term that's interesting because moderate Democrats will say look this kind of progressive ideas will not win over trump voters you think they might be missing something well the question is which truck voters are you going after and I'm not exactly sure trump also voters are equal if you talk to somebody like Stephanie three Oct over AT Emily's list who runs that organization focused on electing women she would say you think of the lunch the guide sitting at the counter with the lunch pail and Pennsylvania Ohio but maybe should think about the guy but we should think about the woman who serving in the coffee at that lunch counter right when Democrats won in two thousand eighteen they won because they had a huge turnout from based Democrats and then they were able to sway a bunch of women to come over about particularly non college educated white women who were willing to go along with the broader democratic agenda that is that's the target population for Democrats in the election and of course the party will try to appeal to as many people as possible but with the party should not let up on things like being pro immigration worried about police brutality worried about some of the more progressive issues that are on the docket in order to try to woo some voters who just they just may not be that many of these guys who would ever vote for Democrats under any circumstance you've advised many democratic campaigns and I wonder if you were in that position today what would you tell one of the people who are running for president because that person is supposed to be the voice of the Democratic Party but these Congress woman because of the president's attention are taking up that space what should a White House hopeful do all the news item that the the person running for president will not have to worry about any individual member of Congress okay so much money and attention focused on them that they will dwarf any other of voice and become the standard bearer for the party even if the president keeps on talking about these congresswoman because he's the one giving them the attention of the press is going to say with the present the president say with the president's gonna say what Democrats have to do is offer a clear compelling a concise vision for the future an alternative to what on which I'm going to say we can't be in a position of only reacting to Donald
