He's absolutely correct in that assessment But also talking about the fact that he expects that pause on the jane j. vaccine to be lifted some time this week in some way shape or form but what you say to those who are vaccine hesitant to are reluctant For any reason. Now some of those reasons i think hold lot more water than others Particularly when it comes to perhaps underlying health conditions come morbidity but some are very partisan in nature. So what do you say to those who are still a little bit when it comes to getting a covid. Nineteen vaccine understand that. I respect their personal choice. I i have my personal. I've studied vaccines. I understand that they. Are i understand that the pitfalls the goods and the bads i. I understand all of it you win. I exercise my personal responsibility. And and that's that's a decision that i made. I respect those people that are hesitant to take your time. Take a look at the way that things shape out. I understand we're going to mandate it. Yeah he actually do your homework. We're not going to mandate a vaccine. We're not gonna mandate any sort of of a vaccine passports. Which makes my toes curl. And i get exercise. Personal responsibility equip yourself with information and make the decision. That's right for you governor. Jared police in town on friday. It was a short business but Talking with several greeley business owners about their experiences a small business Throughout the devastation. That was so. I mean heartbreaking and devastating for so many small businesses now apparently and this morning to a piece out of angelini in the greeley tribune getting credit. Where credit is due. "The governor police rights as an enormous booster of all colorado products and our state as a whole an enormous booster will. Then why did you issue a proclamation. Seemingly taking sides urging us to eat plant based products only on up march twentieth. Oh addresses that as well as it goes on the piece goes on. I'm excited to see the grassroots movement. That my reason proclamation help generate in support and promotion of colorado beef products. Oh i get it governor. So that was your intent all along to energize and invigorate support of agriculture. Now it seems to me. There's a little bit now. There's a lot of bit of a spin going on here making lemons out of lemonade. I don't think that the governor's office expected the blowback that he'd be getting not only within the state as a twenty six counties across the state have declared march twentieth meet in day by any other name their sub really clever names out there as you know following welds weld county the weld county commissioners doing the same declaring ranching and agriculture day. Meet in day in colorado in response to the governor's proclamation. But no let's just say it's extended across state boundaries. As you've had a not only and i asked this question the other day and was so happy to find that not only did nebraska rail against this proclamation by governor jared police as you had nebraska governor pete ricketts declaring in support of colorado ranchers agriculture declaring meat on the menu. Day this saturday. In nebraska and wyoming did something similar as well basically showing its support for agriculture and the livestock industry not only in the state but across the country but again and i asked this of weld county commissioner scott james this morning as well. The apology tour continues for this ill-fated a proclamation again. Don't get me wrong. i'm not saying oh you must only eat this and not that. Isn't there a book by that name now. I would never be presumptuous to tell you what you should eat. That's up to you entirely while your doctor might have some say in the matter as well but Yeah i'm not gonna sit here and say to you. You have to eat beef on meet in friday. If you're not a beef eater that's totally up to you but i. There's just a contradiction. There's a little bit of cognitive dissonance going on here when you have the governor of the state of colorado taking a chunk out of its most lucrative industries in terms of the state economies and in this latest piece saying well.

"Sixty three forty three a barrel as a very important bottom line to this. What's happened yesterday with the fed And the market reaction today a very very important bottom line for long term investors this is important realize the fed has raised its economic growth forecast from four to six and a half percent and says regardless of possible record growth in the economy it will not raise interest rates for another and a half years and will remain extraordinarily accommodative for a very long time to come. There are experienced economists. That are saying right now that the fed won't raise interest rates in their lifetime. That's unbelievable it is and if you're a long term investor take note. Has there ever been a more positive environment for long for careful. Appropriate long-term investing in your lifetime interesting now wall street journal editorial board has its doubts Saying yeah ok. Apparently happy days are here again but at the end of their opining. They say it's hard to believe that the fed forecasters believe this seven of the eighteen dared to predict rate increases in twenty twenty three and gasp. Do i support what they want to do. I'm colorado gale. And i still believe that colorado is worth fighting for and so therefore they want to move to wyoming. I don't but boy. Do i support what they do. And i understand the sediment why they're doing it because never has there been such a metaphorical and almost physical padding the padding on the head of okay k. Well county that's nice. You go sit in your corner from folks down in the in the glorious capital access of denver boulder. We see it all the time. They simply don't understand what makes us tick. "So what they're doing now seems to be working really well for the people that need it. The most. And that's sarcasm. Ladies and gents. But never let it be said that any teachers union anywhere gives a crap about students. They demonstrated over and over and over and over again. And I don't have any issue with teachers. I have a huge issue a teacher's unions, the only teachers I've ever had an issue. What with generally end up turning out to be the union rep for their school, It's you know, it's like, Oh, that's not surprising. Not surprising. So again, I'm gonna keep bringing these stories about school choice, because if you are a parent who supports school choice or takes advantage of it You've got to pay attention. They can make these schools go away. They have the power to do that, especially with some of the things that are coming down the pike from the Biden Biden administration. So pay attention. That's all I'm saying. Yes, Dave. Yeah, you know, you know, rare moment of candor. One of the leaders of one of the teachers unions years ago, Uh, said what? When, uh, When students and Children pay union dues, then they'll be the top priority. Until then. It's the union members, David much as I want to believe that that has been unable to be sourced. I've looked it up many, many times. I've not been able to find the original source on that. It may be true, but I can't. I can't find it for sure. I just want to be clear about that. I believe it. But I can't find the actual source. Every time we talk about it, somebody e mails that can We'll take that. But to your point. It's an accurate statement. Even if it wasn't exactly said that way, and it's not only union members. It's the least competent of union members that is protected by teacher unions. Yeah, And that's why you know what? When, When we want to reward the good teachers and not reward the not so good teachers. The unions will go crazy because they protect the least competent of their members. And how is that in in any way, shape or form going to benefit students? I like that. 100% I'd love it if unions took it upon themselves when they have a poorly rated teacher to create programs to make those teachers better to give them the support and training that they need to better manage a classroom. Better master a subject become better teachers. Wouldn't that be refreshing? But the union actively engaged in making teachers that are struggling better to my knowledge that does not occur. If it does here, that would be miraculous. It's never occurred in kind of like the auto workers union, saying, Yeah, we care about the cars. We really want the best automobiles made possible. Uh, yeah, right. It's the same thing. Same principle. Unions are designed To protect their members. And that said, the other point that that's interesting is these I just Went through my head and out the other side fragment. That's okay. Let me continue with what's on the blogged. Denver's giving out a bunch of tickets for expired plates. Did you see this? So the D M V has been throughout the last year and a half here has been either completely log jammed and people can't get any service. They finally get caught up. Then they get logjam begin well in the beginning or end of January. The D. M V sent a note to all these counties the city's saying, Hey, look, we're way behind getting license plates taken care of. So give out tickets at your discretion, meaning cut of people a break right. So three days after that the city of Denver is written 3000 tickets for expired plates. In three days. So obviously they decided to, you know, hone in on this potential revenue source of about $650,000. Well, after they got called on it. They're going to nullify those tickets. But if you get a ticket for an expired plate because the D m V is so backlogged that you can't get an appointment, Please fight it. Because I don't think governmental incompetence and backlogs and logjams should be your responsibility. And it's lousy. That government is using governments logjams in confidence to give out tickets to people. That's crap that made me mad. So the North Carolina lieutenant governor, his name is Mark Robinson, Dave. Mark Robinson. Is black. And he took issue. With an editorial cartoon. That was written by an eighth grade social studies teacher. And in it, he called the GOP the clan. Let's just say Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson took offense at this any absolutely ripped it and everything behind it to shreds. It is interesting when Democrats hurl the KKK analogy, and I'm thinking to myself. You do know who started it, right? I mean, you do know who kept it going. Was not Republicans Spoiler alert. With Democrats. Great Great Facebook posting from Weld County Commissioner Scott James is on Facebook today. He calls out Governor Jerry Polos for only paying attention to Weld County with a new one. A new suitor shows up and he's absolutely right. I mean, do you think this Weld County Wyoming thing might have legs, Dave? I don't know how long the legs are. I don't know how strong the legs are, but it might have some legs. It's gonna be very interesting to see how this sort of unfolds not just for Colorado. But there are other counties and other states. That are very unhappy like there's a bunch of states in eastern Oregon that want to join Idaho. So we start realigning counties that are on border areas. That could be a very interesting situation. Tow watch. Governor, Pulis decided Tonto erase a gay person's identity, which I find super cool. Richard Grenell was the first Cabinet official who is also openly gay. He served under President Trump in the director of national intelligence role. Now Pete Buddha judge has been confirmed as a Cabinet member, and everyone, including the governor, are congratulating him on being the first openly gay Cabinet member, and he's not He's just not now they're contorting themselves. Now David's the first openly gay Cabinet member to ever be confirmed by the Senate. They're adding that cause rich was, you know, he didn't have to go through the confirmation process because he only served in an interim capacity, but he served But don't worry about that. Governor Pulis next time someone says you're the first openly gay governor also not know he's not. I disagree with him politically, so he's not right. Just run them. And when they say openly gay does that mean if you were a closet gay, you don't count. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. So you're eliminated. You don't exist if you were afraid to come out of the closet, but we're actually serving well, they don't want you continue like the whisper campaign, you know, behind confirmed bachelors and things like that. So you have to say you're gay in order to matter. You know, if you prefer not to talk about it, then you you know, When will we get to a time when we don't? Highlight every time. Some group Has for the first time. Member of.

But did you happen to take in all of the pomp and circumstance. Yesterday as forty. Six president of the united states joe biden was inaugurated in a peaceful transfer of power. I absolutely did along with every other american. Whether you like what's happening or not you know historic day for our country and sat and watched it all. What do you think about his unity speech because it seems to me that well there there was room for a little bit of concern particularly if you come from the conservative part of the political equation as we seen the rug pulled out from under parlor. We've seen President trump blocked from twitter Indefinitely facebook as well other social media platforms as the cancel. Culture reigns supreme. And you have to wonder if The democrat definition of unity matches the republican definition of unity in terms of freedom of expression and free speech. Well and i think the term unity needs to be understood that in order for there to be unity there needs to be compromised and so far. I've seen no compromise. I've seen the very first day of office. Sit down and you know. Hyundai hundred mask mandate and cancel the pipeline and handful. You know get back into the paris. Climate accord there has to be compromised. I don't wanna president on his very first starts right now. Executive orders that cancel the previous presidents executive orders. It has an obviously nothing to do with policy and everything to do with so i while his unity speech was great and his speech. Was you know everybody's like all excited. i'm going to reserve my excitement until i see just exactly how much unity there is. i just. Unity requires compromise. And from everything that i have seen from the from the democrats and controlling colorado the democrats in control across the country and now the democrats in control in the united states. Compromise is not in their vocabulary insurgents. Yeah cabbie larry but compromises not. Yeah it's kind of frightening and bert certainly going to keep an eye on that..

"Broiling gas folks here. I i believe that that we'll see an increase in applications quite frankly As an especially as that price goes up folks who explore for oil will continue to do so it it it all depends on the regulatory environment. Regrettably we don't have a free market anymore. We have a very very regulated market and it all depends on what the regulators in both washington. Dc and denver designed to do. Let's talk a little bit about Your solar working group picasso. Well this has been a topic of no small amount of conversation these days. You know it is and i agree with that. Which has been offered by the tribune and by the folks that they interviewed in that that we did try to move too fast. on sorta regulations. We did have a problem in the fact that there were certain certain solar developers that we're looking to usurp our our our code. That's not good. I mean and and so we wanted to try to pump the brakes on those trying to use their code with that being said we did a appropriately from pumping blake brakes on the on the code. We will Have the second reading on that. Code on february twenty-second today. As a matter of fact we had a larger working group. Today we begin with a smaller working group. And we're gonna get down into the nuts and bolts of of solar code with soda developers with utility scale providers and with landowners as well and and. I look very much forward to being in that meeting today where we'd begin that conversation in earnest with the with folks who provide end developer solar energy seriously remiss if as part of our discussions morning we didn't talk a little bit about covid nineteen vaccinations Where weld county stands on That point and as far as Hospitalizations in case counts. You know i believe that. Our hospitalizations are hard decreasing. In fact i should have had that data pulled up but give me just a second year. Gale and i can add weld health dot org as i slip it. A plug for our data dashboard Yesterday reported a hundred and seven new cases. That's a continues to be. Too high are positivity rate is at eight point four five percent which pushes well into the two. The governor's yellow category. They're the lower weaken the drive. That average ship positivist the two week average positivity straight to the better And so we are seeing the curve. The the dramatic spike that we saw right after halloween. We're seeing that continue to fall. I had heard that statewide or hospitalizations hospitalizations have fallen below. Eight hundred. Eight hundred was kind of a stressor point for for statewide hospitals and so the hospitals are starting to feel at least in. He's you know we're still in the midst of this pandemic we we've got the vaccines. Ah coming out with the same. Things remain true. As far as how we mitigate this virus now you were named the new chair of the upper front range transportation planning region replacing a weld county commissioner barbara kirk meyer in that role Gives just a brief update if you would where we stand on transportation issues well. I am pleased to represent well county on the north front range metropolitan planning organization as well and with my my chairmanship of the upper front range comes a position on the state transportation advisory committee and so i'm i'm into it pretty deep Of course we still have a wait and see attitude with what comes out of the state legislature. This year is as far as and how they will continue to to fund transportation..

"Will i mean some early on. We're all ready talking about how the new biden administration will dramatically. Change things as we know it. But how will some of his moves even as early moves Particularly when it comes to oil and gas how will it affect us here in colorado particularly in weld county while the future of energy development on public lands in colorado and indeed across the west hangs in the balance because well during the campaign as you're well aware such as it was the basement campaign. Joe biden made it very clear that he supports banning new permits on federally managed land and waters for oil gas and coal concerns about climate change and threats to air and water quality now. Needless to say it's a pretty dramatic change from the at trump administration which prioritized. Us energy dominance rolled back or stream lined rules and policies as a burden on energy development. And you have to remember. The bureau of land management which is part of the interior department manages drilling and mining on public lands. Roughly thirty six percent of colorado is federally. Managed lands and energy development occurs on both private and public lands in colorado colorado. By the way The seventh. i've seen the six but we'll go with this piece out of the denver post. The seventh biggest energy producer in the entire nation. Western leaders network made up of more than four hundred and fifty local and tribal elected. By the american petroleum institute found a ban would cost colorado eighteen thousand five ad high paying jobs by twenty twenty two and one hundred and eight million dollars in state revenue the to lynn grainger executive director of api is colorado branch ultimately ranger said. The decision on a federal leasing ban is a choice between american made energy and foreign energy a lot of that coming from countries that absolutely despise us and similarly a choice between american jobs and for jobs. "Automobiles appliances with more stringent requirements. Oh yes in. The oil and gas wars continue. Not only on the state level here in colorado but on a federal level with new restrictions on their access to federal monuments. Wildlife preserves federal lands. Mr biden's orders will direct the agencies that review these policies to focus on better protecting consumers and boosting employment. Oh yes ensuring the union vote in addition to addressing climate change. No surprise you. Had senator shelley moore capito republican out of west virginia saying that mr biden's policies from day one hurt american workers and our economy. I think here in colorado particularly in weld county. We second that emotion. Don't we owe tell you what by the way. We're going to check in with weld county. Commissioner scott james covering a broad swath of topics including how some of these moves by president biden will impact oil and gas in colorado specifically in weld county when webb county commissioner. Climate accord agreement will eliminate a good paying jobs house. Republican conference picked up the mantle saying the biden administration has made it clear that on day one they will immediately cater to the fall. Far left i should say crater instead of working to help all americans and move our country forward. Of course we already know that joe biden. And we've asked this question. Will he be able to withstand the pressure from the far left during his administration or will he fold because these already facing considerable pressure from the lights of the squad and aoc among many others to take a much more drastic action on so many issues including the cost of college as well as healthcare and the environment obviously the pandemic although it seems to have taken a back seat. Hasn't it just asking the question. But it's among the most urgent concerns facing joe biden on the eve of his taking office sadly The death toll. Those who died from complications of covid nineteen in the united states reached a four hundred thousand so the one hundred day mask mandate applies on federal property and on airlines trains transit systems traveling between steps though president biden will direct the government to work with state and local authorities. Now another executive order on wednesday creates an office of white house. covid nineteen response and nailed it because There was a gentleman appointed to lead that office. And i asked whoa surprise. It's not as our well. Indeed he has been elevated to the position of czar This man leading the white house covid nineteen response known as the corona virus is name..

"Information at Walton family foundation dot warg. The listeners of KQED. Coming up in the next segment. A weekend edition. You'll meet the creators of a new two part HBO Sports documentary on Tiger Woods. That's ahead on KQED. This is weekend edition from NPR News. I'm Scott Simon. You've been a feud in northern Colorado. The pandemic is the source as hospitals in one community Philip with covert patients, residents there point fingers at County next door. Here's Rae Ellen Bichel with the story. Weld County has lots of sugar beets, cattle, oil and gas wells and according to county Commissioner Scott James Western spirit, too, and I think it is a Western thing to want to do the right thing because we were told, But because it's the right thing to do in normal times. Embracing Western spirit isn't a problem. But as Cupid cases climbed cities next door worried was Weld about to overflow their hospitals with avoidable cases. In a meeting in early December, the city Council members of Longmont just across the county line had had enough. Here are council members Polly Christenson, Susie Hidalgo Faring and mayor Brian Bagley. It is wrong for people to expect us to bear the burden of what they've been irresponsible enough. Let lose. They're the reason why I can't be in classroom in front of my kids. I'm done with that. Everybody needs to be a good neighbor. If a neighbor is bringing mud into the house, Taking our shoes off is not gonna make a difference. The conflict flared over a hospital bed tally. At one point. Weld County claims things were fine has had plenty of intensive care beds available 43 of them. When, In fact it only had three. It turns out, Weld County was counting the beds in its hospitals and the beds in places like long mine, Scot James, the Weld County commissioner, says. Of course, they counted other hospitals. That's how the health care system works. Counties don't have walls around them to use a crudity. There's no non peon section in the pool. Everybody's gonna get a little arm and that's what's going on. Right now. With Kobe Long months Mayor Brian Bagley Avenue or hospitals are full. But don't worry. We're just going to use yours. So he said, 48 hours I've told Weld County, he asked the City Council to consider restricting Weld County residents ability to receive care at Longmont hospitals. Bagley said. He knew it was never going to come to fruition. After all, it was probably illegal, but he wanted to prove a point. I had it with these turkeys. They're going to be here, if possible, Fine, letting propose the question. If there's only one I see you better left, and there are two grand parents there, one from well, one from Bowler who should get it. Bagley City Council shrugged off what he said about withholding medical treatment. But they did consider telling well to set of medical tents to deal with its own overflow ICU patients. In the end, they just asked them to publicly encourage the residents to wear masks and practice social distancing. Weld County didn't respond. Patty Limerick, historian at the University of Colorado, Boulder, says the virus in flames longstanding Western strife between urban and rural communities, that's pretty easy. You don't have to sit for a really long time is the Western historian thing. Whenever that came from in the nineties Limerick towards several states performing a mock divorce trial between the rural and urban west. She played her Bana Asphalt West, married to Sandy Green Hills West. Is that conflict still relevant mercy? That would be a hard yes. Limerick and her colleagues are reviving the play now, and they're adding covert 19 to the script. I'm Rail and Michelle in Colorado. That reporter's from our partner, Kaiser Health News. Mm hmm. Very first seconds of HBO's new documentary on Tiger Woods gives glimpses of the expectations piled on him from birth. Really by his father, Earl. People transcend this game on bringing to the world humanitarianism. Which has never been known before, and then later the champion handcuffed in detention, the butt of late night monologues about intimate details. And the stupor from drugs. Tiger Woods.
