He explained in a three week period of time there were 5 fire fatalities in four fires in Montgomery county. One was the three alarm fire at the arrive apartment complex in Silver Spring that led to the death of a 25 year old woman, Goldstein said the fire was accidental that electronics candles and smoking materials were present, but that an exact cause may never be determined. Crews rescue 2 from plane caught in power lines in Maryland

"Investigators are looking into why a small plane crashed in Maryland on Sunday. The small plane had left White Plains New York and was near the Montgomery county, Maryland air park in Gaithersburg, when it crashed into live power lines trapping two people inside and knocking out power to thousands in the area. Before first responders could rescue the two, utility contractors had to disconnect the high tension wires. So it would be safe for the rescuers and responders had to stabilize the plane and then the rescue. Montgomery county fire chief Scott Goldstein. Both patients have been transported from the scene to local area trauma centers. With serious injuries. But both are expected to survive. He talked to W JLA TV, state police identify the two as pilot Patrick Merkel of Washington, D.C., and passenger Janet Williams of Louisiana, both in their 60s. I'm Rita foley

"9 ten. A single engine plane has crashed this evening into a transmission tower in Montgomery Felix. Let's go straight to the scene live is WTO's John Aaron John. Hello, dick. I'm looking at what looks to be the plane right now. It's a very hazy evening and you can barely make it out, but it's roughly a hundred feet in the air suspended in these power lines next to a large tower that holds up these power lines. It's really quite a remarkable sight. Tons of emergency responders here are trying to figure out how to deal with this problem. We were just given a briefing by Montgomery county fire chief Scott Goldstein, who tells us that they're waiting for additional resources to come here because they basically have a lot of work to do to get this situation resolved. We're told that maybe in the next 30 or 45 minutes or so it'll get additional cruise here so they can start this long process of rescuing the two people who are said to be up in this plane. It's going to start by having this plane actually secured to one of the towers. So the plane won't move while they're trying to rescue people, then they're going to bring in a very large crane they said and presumably try to resolve things that way. I'm at the goshen Plaza shopping center for those who are familiar in Montgomery village and there are dozens of people out here along with me looking at this plane suspended in the wires as we wait to see what rescuers are going to do here. John have officials said anything about the condition of the people aboard and whether they're in communications with them. They are in communication with them, they have not given us any specifics about the condition of them. You can use your own logic to think how people might be doing after smacking into some power lines in a plane crash, basically. But we are told that they are in the plane, and they are in contact with rescuers. They're being told to carefully regulate their cell phone usage to keep the battery alive, so they are in contact with them as all we're being told right now. Great John, WTO's John Aaron at the scene live at Montgomery village. 9 13, if Black Friday didn't do it for you, maybe you're holding out some hope for cyber Monday, where might the deals be found? Electronics is one place that people are suggesting. "Bruce Allen, teddy gelman is our producer. The top story we're following this morning there's been a major development in the explosion and fire at the Potomac oaks condominium complex and Gaithersburg, fire and rescue crews have found a body. Montgomery county police chief Marcus Jones says they're still working with very limited information. But we are looking into the possibility of this as a criminal intentional act. It was around ten 30, Thursday morning when a police canine unit alerted to possible human remains near the top of the rubble of unit 8 26. County fire and rescue chief Scott Goldstein says that doesn't tell them who or where this person was. Because of the blast because of the upheaving of the building and then the explosion itself until we have the means of identifying that person, we don't know where that person was from. Until fire and rescue clears the entire building, investigators can not say whether there are any other victims. Reporting from Gaithersburg, Sarah Jacobs, WTO, news. The body was transferred to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore, and chief Jones says he hopes to have an identification as early as today. You have an update now on Sunday shooting at the University of Virginia. The chief medical examiner now says that all three victims died from a gunshot wound to the head. My Collins is one of the two students who were wounded, but survived in his mother Brenda Holland spoke with ESPN, his classmates. A grateful for him. Because they said, he saved their lives. He was the first off to bust and told to of his classmates to run. And he went back. My Collins is now recovering after surgery. The second survivor was released from the hospital earlier this week, the shooting suspect is being held without bail. Transportation officials in Maryland plan to wait until the spring to seek a 50 year contract to expand two 70 and part of the beltway with toll lanes. By extending the deadline for companies to submit their plans until March 21st, the state puts the project in the hands of governor elect Wes Moore, who has criticized it. Moore has called the tolls to expensive for most drivers and wants to make sure all ideas about other ways to alleviate congestion on the beltway into 70 are heard. Well, it is the end of a political era and the start of a new one for House Democrats. Their longtime leaders are clearing the way for a new generation. We get more from WTO's Mitchell Miller today on the hill. House speaker Nancy Pelosi and majority leader steny Hoyer have been the party's two top leaders for 20 years. But that's about to change, since they've decided not to run again for leadership roles. New York congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who is about 30 years younger, is widely considered Pelosi's likely successor. He leads the democratic caucus. We deliver under the most challenging midterm conditions possible. The American people recognize that. Republicans counter that Democrats have delivered too much federal spending and inflation and will take over the house next year, though with a limited majority. "I'm Sean Anderson. I'm Hillary Howard, Mike Jacobs is our producer. We start with breaking news from Congress a huge change there. House speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step down as democratic leader. WTO's Mitchell Miller is on Capitol Hill. The house will be in order. House speaker Pelosi receiving a standing ovation before she said she's ready to make way for new leadership. For me, the hours come for a new generation to lead the democratic caucus that I so deeply respect. Pelosi, who's the first and only woman to serve as speaker, says she'll continue to represent her San Francisco district. New York congressman Hakeem Jeffries is widely considered to be her likely democratic successor. Also, the House majority leader steny Hoyer says he will step down from leadership, but continue to serve the 5th district of Maryland. Republicans will have the House majority in the coming year. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTO news. We're also following the aftermath of yesterday's explosion and fire at the Potomac oaks condominiums in Gaithersburg. Today, Montgomery county fire rescue revised the number of known injuries from 12 to 14 of the ten residents who went to the hospital all but one are out now, but some major questions remain unanswered. Here's WTO's John doman. More than 24 hours after the explosion. One unit and 8 26 remain on accounted for. In the hope is that person is somehow just not reachable, but also wasn't here. And while canines haven't detected any signs of humans in the rubble they've reached, he fire chief Scott Goldstein says it does start to become concerning when this much time is elapsed. There was a significant blast. There was a significant fire situation and then the collapse. So we take all of that to build a survivability profile

We have to find a way to pay for it, some kind of way, and that is going to come out of your pocket we're told if you drive the dulles toll road, tolls you see are expected to rise about 6 bucks of trip starting in January. This was just approved by the metropolitan Washington airport's authority, the board of directors there. Now, you'll pay we're told four bucks at the main toll Plaza and two bucks at a ramp. That's a dollar 25 more than you're paying right now. Now those in charge stress this morning, this is not a surprise here. It's been in the works they say for quite some time and is not related to the unexpected cost increases for that part of metro's silver line. "News, constantly updated. 24/7, 360 five So we're having a little technical issue just taking you behind the curtain here we need to find a way to play some audio, all of our news stories. But Michelle, let's go over what a devastating day it's been in this community in Gaithersburg where this condominium couple of parts of a condominium building blew up today. There's an explosion, a big fire, and a couple of people, at least, badly hurt. Well, again, we have 12 people injured in total, including two critically those two are adults where we understand that for children are also hurt. This explosion happening just before 9 o'clock this morning, ripping through that condo building in Gaithersburg. It happened at the Potomac oaks condominiums a row of garden style condos on quince Orchard boulevard near rabbit road. It appears that most residents have been accounted for after this blast. Montgomery county fire chief Scott Goldstein though, telling reporters that there are still some people that live there in one of the condo units that they have not yet been able to reach. So that's where we're at this afternoon. There are still just a few people that have not been contacted that live there. Otherwise, everyone else is accounted for. And we were hearing from some witnesses who were speaking with our reporters about heroic actions by neighbors and others to try to save people today. That was another very compelling part of the story. Let me tell you about something else that's going on. We may get back to the Gaithersburg situation in a bit, but this is very important for commuters. It's new tonight. We of course have been celebrating the metro silver line extension, opening this week. But guess what? It's got to be paid for in some way. And that is going to come from your pocket. If you drive the dulles toll road, tolls are expected to rise about 6 bucks a trip starting in January. This was just approved by the metropolitan Washington airport's authority board of directors. Now you'll pay $4 at the main toll Plaza, then a couple of bucks at any ramp. There's a dollar 25 more that you're paying right now. So a dollar 25 more than you'd be paying right now on the dulles toll road, and it is all to pay for the silver line extension for metro. Those in charge say this is not to be considered as a surprise, although it may be for some people, it's been in the works for a while, and it is not related to unexpected cost increases for that part of metro silver line. So on one hand, in terms of the rails, a great celebration, Michelle, because people can finally get to Delos airport all the way out to Ashburn and ride the rails in that part of Northern Virginia, but somehow some way it's got to be paid for. And this is a pretty substantial increase for the Delos toll road. Well, our time now is 7 O 8. Traffic and weather on the 8s, let's go to Steve dresner in the traffic center. "To our continuing coverage now from Gaithersburg, where there's a search for possible survivors after a morning blast and fire, which knocked down parts of a garden apartment complex, ten people have been hospitalized two of them are critically injured and dozens are still without a place to live. It appears that we're dealing with 6 apartments technically condos, but 6 units per building. So for the four buildings we have 24 units of residents, displaced, Red Cross, emergency management is on site and assisting us and those residents. That's Montgomery county fire chief Scott Goldstein, who says they are worried there could be victims in the rubble. The earth shaking blast happened at around 9 o'clock this morning on quince Orchard boulevard near rabbit road, while Goldstein says the fire was fed by gas, they can't yet say that that was the cause. "Spring It happened at the friendly garden apartment building that's just about two miles outside of downtown Silver Spring It's on lyttonsville road Montgomery county fire chief Scott Goldstein says there are injuries The initial number at this time is that we have transported ten people to local hospitals Several of which had serious injuries the others had assorted and minor injuries We expect another update from the chief at around 3 o'clock this afternoon We of course will bring you the latest TikTok is the focus of a new investigation into its impact on the mental and physical health of its users at least 8 states are involved now Some experts believe the technology that drives TikTok can promote depression and eating disorders even drug abuse in children and teenagers Here's CBS's lilia Luciano Massachusetts attorney general Maura Haley is part of the group of AGs from across the country investigating TikTok's effect on young users It's a bigger problem if the platform's new about it and worse if they designed their platforms to essentially get them addicted to the platform The probe looks at what the app's algorithm does to increase the frequency and duration users stay on the app and whether the company knowingly harms young users mental health No comment from TikTok Can you force people with addiction or mental illness to get treatment California's governor is working on that Democrat Gavin Newsom wants to make every county set up a mental health branch in civil court for people who refuse services If this were to become law those suffering from debilitating psychosis would have to accept care some homeless advocates are against it.
