How Zamboni Driver Helped Carolina Hurricanes Win Big Game

"We can't begin the show without talking about the biggest story to hit hockey since what out. Foster Scott Foster. Probably the Glorious Song I don't know so. What was the last hockey story to get on the today? Show Leyla Anderson. Probably and you know what's interesting about it to me. I mentioned Scott Foster. Is that happened two years ago and one of the more interesting things the way he handled in the blackhawks handle is he got all these requests. He was asked to go on Jimmy Kimmel and the Today Show People magazine. And he turned it all down because he wanted to be about the franchise throat. Meanwhile Dave Ayers technically property of the Carolina Hurricanes Right now. We know they don't say Tom. I'm going to rename top golf. Airs Ball David Errors. Of course is the forty two year old goalie from Whitby Ontario pro previously experienced in the Allan Cup Hockey League where he played for the Norwood Vipers. For Eight Games He was the is the Zamboni Goal Zamboni driver for the Toronto Police H. L. Affiliate the Toronto Marlies He became just the third emergency goaltender in the modern era to play in the NHL when he went out and played for the Carolina Hurricanes against the Toronto Maple leafs on Saturday evening the marlies Zamboni driver playing for the enemy and You know he beat the leafs as everybody knows but are you surprised that the like the hurricanes if there was any team in the league where I was like. This is a team that could play that. Well in front of Amateur goaltender like maybe Dallas would be the number one. Maybe the islanders would be just by the systems they play but Carolina basically saying you. Don't get the PUCK ANYMORE TO THE TORONTO. Maple leafs was something. That was entirely predictable in this. In this scenario my opinion I don't think the hurricanes got enough credit for this guy getting the win one hundred even like after the Game Rod. Rod brindamour comes into the locker room. Talk about how the team played in front of that guy for that guy. Four David eyres eight. Which is an incredible thing. And you know what I was just talking about. Who Remembering when his team had a goalie. That didn't show up. She showed up late so they they had to play six on five. Like we couldn't score a goal on the empty night. Even I mean it's amazing. How the mind works how. The effort level works in that Carolina Hurricanes team. You can't say enough about. I Mean David. Eyres only had eight eight eight saves on ten shots. I mean you know you put a lot of guys in the net with a a modicum of of skill In the position and have that performance in front of them. They're going to have some success so all the credit to him for stepping in there and getting in front of pox but man that I mean Jake Gardner was just laying out out there. I mean it was unbelievable to watch imagine if Michael Hutchinson head that Michael Hutchinson now property of the Colorado Avalanche. Because of course we're going to talk about the trade deadline. But you know I think the reason why this story resonates with so many people is that in the little child and all of us. It's the dream of a fairytale at forty two years old. He's the second oldest player ever to make his. Nhl Debut. And I guess just to put a tie on this as we get into the trade deadline talk. Think BACK TO MEETING SCOTT. Foster one year after his big day where he was the accountant. Ben Saved what was it? Fourteen minutes of scoreless hockey for the Chicago Blackhawks against the then mighty would peg jets and you know he didn't do any interviews for a year and he said at one point. I called it the incident and I had to tell myself just because you take advantage of an opportunity doesn't mean you can enjoy it so I'm just glad that day there is enjoying and enduring with all of us because we all seem to be enjoying it

"And you know, you pointing out as well, it's not just a Scott foster thing with the rockets he's going to be universally disliked tonight. And it's not just as Scott foster thing there are other reps on the floor of the history. That's going on all that said, don't you think it's odd that after Chris Paul and the rockets made as public as they've ever done their animus toward Scott foster, and what they think is in the. Same direction going the other way that they keep him away from the rockets all the way up until this series. I mean, I understand the NBA. I mean, what what I look I know the league can't let a team dictate who reps they're games, but to keep him away all this point. And then for the biggest series that these two teams might face all year long, certainly in the minds eye of the fans now, they decide to return him to the floor against the rockets. Very it's a very fair question. I don't have the data of you know, for all. I know Scott foster didn't officiate a Utah Jazz game for the first two months of the season. Then vitiated eight in the second half. I I don't have the data of the average time between between officiating aside. I do agree that that is unusual and seems to me that there may have been something play there. I do not know how long a schedule the guys out regular season. I think it's a couple of weeks at a time. I agree that that is unusual. But I can't say for sure that that's anything out of the ordinary and the regular. Referee rotation. But again, I wrote a story about the officiating last week right expected Scott foster to be in this series. And I'm gonna tell you again, if the sucker goes six or seven t Steph falls repre second time it is. He is a top five officials. No matter what anybody wants to say they rate these officials this way, and he is there because of his rating it is not a surprise to me all that he is here. And again, even when I was with the rockets yesterday at their practice. They have been watching knowing Scott foster was probably coming and they were wondering when I was going to happen. And when they when they when they saw Scott foster did not draw game yesterday, and we were three days in to the second round. And there had been multiple game slate and a game in every series, and Scott fosters named hadn't popped up. They knew he was either in Milwaukee in a hotel room last night while he was in Oakland in hotel room last night. I'm telling you they knew it was coming. Because like a mean foster is coming like game of thrones foster is coming. That's right. I mean, and I I read that piece that you referring to about officiating. Last week on ESPN dot com. It's a great piece I suggest everybody go read it and in conjunction with a piece that just got posted in the last twenty four hours from your colleagues act low and Rachel Nichols about the rockets having put together a memo, they never forwarded to the league, but they did express and communicate the contents of the memo league looking at game seven last year between the rockets and the warriors that foster did referee saying that the eight they were eighty one potential missed calls and non calls in game seven that cost him at least eighteen points on average and the memo according to this article essentially accused the referees of of throwing it as what? So when you talk about how bad it is getting what the this seems like it's now reached the Defcon level that the Commissioner has to step in what can be done to tamp down the argument here, Mark for the you know, the average fan doesn't do this for a living. I understand. What they would fall for your too smart for this is a smokescreen the where the rockets miss twenty seven consecutive three pointers in game. Seven James harden shot twenty four percent in the series on three pointers. There was another game. He had in that series..

Warriors vs. Rockets: With Scott Foster set to officiate Game 2, Stephen Curry's foul troubles are a major story

"Rockets said oh my gosh. This story just keeps getting crazier and crazier. Twenty-five-year NBA veteran. Officials Scott foster has been named the head ref for tonight's rockets. Warriors game two at oracle. It's worth noting that the last time he reffed a rockets game. James harden, fouled out when the rockets blew a double digit fourth quarter lead lost to the Lakers in LA. Chris Paul also fouled out and picked up a technical foul. The rockets hate the sky fact, a worrier seven been too crazy about him either over the years, although I did look it up and they are seven six over the last. Four seasons in playoff games. Officiated by Scott foster foster, officiated, two of the rockets losses to the warriors in last season's western finals. "How it's not be sole focus of your universe in pittsburgh has to be a little telling right we've seen what reading the signs can mean with the new york giants and odell beckham junior and really throughout this we're seeing that especially these positions at offense of skill positions that aren't the quarterback doesn't really pay to be the best we sat over there on golick and wingo yesterday because these guys both have had i won't say off the field issues because i will continue to point out that odell beckham junior's off the field issue is a party of one right now and this is a guy that has been a little over exuberant on the field has flirted with the line and stepped over it lebanon bell had legitimate off the field issues has been suspended for them has also and we try and love to gather had much more injury issue then his counterpart in odell beckham junior but has been one of the most of the not the most productive running backs since he entered the league most would look at him and say that's the best running back in the league and yet for two guys that could have a legitimate claim to the best at their position we all start to balk at the idea of paying them we sat over there and read that stat and trae brought it up yesterday and golic and wingo that no team has won the super bowl the player with an eighteen million dollar cap it now neither these guys odell maybe would have the eighteen million dollar cap it but then there's the stigma about paying running backs an exorbitant amount of money because of the nature of that position.

"And pulling this off and to do this in your first performance as a yankee you better be ready for the pressure because as i said yesterday the minute that second home run came flying off the bat dialects pec patients up to the max we're not going to be able to contain our own excitement about this lord knows i'm not going to be and yesterday was interesting yesterday it was the most baseball i've watched any longtime there was an interesting buzz around these guys being together it was sort of akin to on a different scale just because it was these guys and maybe you can couple with that the debut of someone like show way tani with the with the angels in a few other instances but for the most part this pairing sort of had that feel of some of what we've gotten an nba free agency in the last couple of seasons with nfl free agency now where you're getting these pairings of superstars together on the same team that make you stop and wonder what is this group capable of now and you makes you make sure that you're there to be along for the ride it becomes must see tv we saw and i know this is going to be much to the dismay of trey wingo who lamented the idea that we would cover anything from the pregame warmups of someone like odell beckham junior steph curry but the fact that those things became a legitimate sources of entertainment for fans along the way legitimate sources of entertainment that people would show up early for the same way people started showing up early for batting practice for judge stanton this spring that speaks volumes to the star power created by these guys and you saw highlights during the game of these guys crushing balls in batting practice before the game you saw translate over the field and you recognize the allure that this brings in a league where and i saw buster on these bet the bet the farm article on espn dot com it was great looking at trends in baseball.

"Carlos dent we hadn't really heard a ton from and as the new guy coming over as the reigning national league vp you would have imagined the fanfare been there but that's how stack there's yankees lineup was we talked about them as a collective you said and looked at this group and said man judge stanton and sanchez indeedy all of these guys on and on down the way and then one continue to separate for the pack no this is not the same call choose center last by state of the game and the yankees leaks six long giancarlo stanton went ahead became the second player in yankees history with multiple home runs in his debut with the team the first since roger marris who did it against the red sox april nineteenth of nineteen sixty mayors won his first of two consecutive ale mvp awards that season stanton's first home is the hardest hit ball of the day which is not shocking all these exit velocity stats distances we're going to break the bank on those this year with these two benton balls around after each other because it is just out of control and when you look at giancarlo stanton a guy who came from a place that will get to a little bit miami that has a bit of a different way about going about things right now and hadn't quite had the success that you would have hoped for what a breath of fresh air this environment has to be for him what a breath of fresh air this idea of coming to an organization that seems not only dedicated to winning but winning right now.
