"Interests, not the public interest. This past summer, our friends at New York magazine came to us and they asked if I wanted to help create a list of people sort of a, who's who of individuals who profited in some way from trump being in the White House? It's a stunning list and you can find it in the current issue of New York magazine. Any one of the entries from the list might have derailed a previous administration. As we were putting together the list something really came into focus for us. The story of corruption in the trump administration is interest about individual people or their actions. It's about how trump's way of doing business has pervaded our entire democracy. That's the story we're telling today. It's like a four year experiment in what happens when you don't refrigerate your leftovers in these conditions, a lot of mold can bloom. So today on the show, a TRIPTYCH, the cabinet secretary, who is business partners with China while negotiating a trade deal with the Chinese. The lawyer who's done more than any single person to keep the president's business records the key to understanding his conflicts out of. The third story is about the president himself and the way he's wielded his constitutional perogatives to pardon and commute criminal sentences. It's his most monarchic power to make problems disappear Intel allies, I can protect you. Trump reporter may Kramer starts us off. A. Act One tone at the top. There is a moment right before trump became president that we add trump bank talk about all the time to be here today at president-elect trump's request. It was when Sherry Dillon one of trump's lawyers walked out in front of a group of journalists and trump supporters to announce that president elect trump had a plan to separate himself from his business. He directed me and my colleagues at the law firm, Morgan Lewis and bacchus to design a structure for his business empire that would completely isolate him from the. Management of the company trump was not going to sell his assets or put them in a blind trust like past presidents Dylan. made it clear. He didn't have to his voluntarily taking this on the conflicts of interest laws simply do not apply to the president or the vice president, and they are not required to separate themselves from their financial assets. Instead, she said trump would hand over management of the business to his eldest sons, which meant trump would still have a financial stake and what happened to his company. Dave vesting. Sherry Dillon said would be unfair to trump president-elect trump should not be expected to destroy the company he built. This plan offers a suitable alternative to address the concerns of the American people. This plan is one that allows the president to funnel taxpayer money directly into his business whenever he visits his properties. Over the last four years, we have seen so many consequences flow from this moment when trump said, he would not disentangle himself from his financial interests. Inside Trump Inc, we sometimes refer to it as the original sin of the trump presidency. Is, going, to get my, you want me to hold up the recorder now. Yeah. That'd be great. Okay we're good. This is Dan Alexander. He's a reporter at Forbes I called him up because I have been thinking about one consequence of trump's decision not to divest, and that is the message it sends to the people who work in his administration. Dan has been reporting on one cabinet official in particular who has a lot of power and a lot of complicated financial interests who failed to separate those interests from his work for the government. Can you start by telling me who was Wilbur Ross before he joined the trump administration or what was his reputation? So Wilbur Ross the. Part of the account is known as a private equity billionaire, the population who wasn't afraid to go into complicated situations and to kind of rough and tumble industry's demands. Coal steal stuff that Scott dirt under the fingernails the millennials are not spending at the same rate says, one of his specialties was negotiating complex bankruptcies. This brought him into contact with trump in the early nineties when investors wanted to take over trump's struggling Atlantic city casinos, Ross helped convince them to keep trump involved and when trump then says that he's going to run for president. He starts making some declarations about why he believes that trump's trade policy is really really smart. He also hosts fundraisers for trump and sort of a big backer, and then after trump wins, you know he receives one of the first appointments to be Secretary of Commerce. The commerce secretary oversees everything from trade to the national weather, service to the census. It is not a flashy position. It is a powerful one. Like trump Ross had all of these business entanglements when he stepped into the role, what's supposed to happen in that process? When someone goes from working in private industry to being a cabinet official? What are the rules for separating yourself from Your Business Yeah? So the first thing you have to tell everyone what you own and that sort of gives people a sense of what it is that you have and. Where there might be potential conflicts, and then the next thing that you're supposed to do is you're supposed to divest everything. So trump does not legally have to do this because the criminal conflicts of interest statute doesn't apply to the president, but it does apply to the Secretary of Commerce. So Wilbur Ross then has to sell off everything in his portfolio that could overlap with his responsibilities as secretary of Commerce. And he doesn't have to do it right away. You've got you know a little bit of a grace period so you can do it over several months and you're making the promise that is. Going to stay away from anything that could be related to my own financial interests in that intervening period. Stick to that promise? No, he did not. Just give you one example. He didn't disclose one of his holdings in a railcar company called Greenbrier but then not only did he not disclose it but then he held a meeting with the CEO of Greenbrier in the basement of the White House when the Greenbrier CEO was in town to talk about government matters. and. There's some ethics officials who think that even if you just take the meeting that's already a crime but certainly, if you act upon any business things that you learn in the meeting, that's a crime. Wilbur Ross says that they didn't talk about business that was a purely social meeting. But that wasn't the only meeting. He met with. CEO of Chevron. When his wife still held a large interest in Chevron and for purposes of the law, his wife holds an interest in a company. It's the same thing as if he owns an interest in a company is just as vulnerable from a legal perspective and there are other meetings. You know he meets with the CEO Boeing and at that time again, his wife holds what looks like a multimillion dollar stake in Boeing, we can see the calendars we can see that they're talking business. I've been thinking a lot about this idea of the appearance of a conflict of interest men I think what some of your reporting on Wilbur Ross shows is that it is almost impossible to know based on publicly available records whether or not. He is truly conflicted because it involves knowing what his intent is I mean in many ways the appearance of a conflict of interest is the best indicator that we have. You can't get inside somebody's head. Wilbur Ross changes policy because I own millions of dollars with Chevron stock, but that's not going to happen you know and. The reason that the laws are set up sooner then you have to divest at the start. Is that then nobody has to wonder..

"At best on that kind of brings us to the last question to ask you because you mentioned the impossibility. That's dire could snag delegates in Nevada and South Carolina. Who knows where else going forward at the very end of Wednesday night's debate Nbc Chuck Todd asked every candidate kind of game out the possibility of going into the convention with someone with the front runner. Whoever it is having a plurality of elegance but not the majority being need to get the nomination we are less than two weeks away from a national primary and I want to ask all of you. This simple question. There's a very good chance and none of you. We're going to have enough delegates to the Democratic National Convention to clinch this nomination. Okay if that happens I want all of your opinions on. This should the person with the most delegates at the end of this primary season. Be The nominee even if they are short of a majority my answer to that is wait and see until at least Super Tuesday once we get through the first four early states still not that many delegates awarded all things considered when we hit Super Tuesday march third by the end of Super Tuesday but the time all the votes are tallied which granted could take quite some time. Considering California is one of those states forty percent of delegates will be awarded so we will really have a better answer and a better view in that question comes Super Tuesday march third and the big thing about the states is proportional allocation. You know if you win thirty percent if a Republican election some Republican states it's winner. Take all thirty percent. Wins you the hall of delegates not the case in twenty twenty with Democrats in the states the UN twenty-five percent statewide? You get proportional amount of it you know you have to crack a certain threshold the up to fifteen percent of support to get delegates at all so somebody getting seven percents. Come where nothing. But that also means candidates can't just eke out a victory can't beat them by two or three points and one away with a hall. This is kind of what we saw in these early states that You know no matter who won. I were or New Hampshire Sanders and Buddha judge. Walked Away with just about the same amount of delegates Right now before the recount is completed has more national delegates because they had roughly the same vote count and that will really super size itself on Super Tuesday that if in California three candidates break that threshold. That's dividing that big pot among free people that prevents anybody who gets first place from this kind of taking off and then also you've got the fact that there are delegates that come from the congressional right and so you can have different people finishing above fifteen percent in twenty congressional districts than our finishing about fifteen percent statewide. And so you. That's just the way. The delegate division could contribute to the sort of circumstance that that was discussed at the debate. Doesn't mean it's GonNa Happen. I feel like the talk of a contested convention. Always runs hot at some point. In every single presidential primary ever but you can kind of see the contours how we could end up walking down that. Path Zach. Thanks for breaking it down. Thanks Avenue Scott. Dirt CAST will be right back after this short break. Get ready to experience a story. You probably haven't heard a story about what it.

"That Scott Dirt on Ah Dessert for me to the Lok Each any little saw that I had to if I had one little thought had a negative thought ahead and think of two positive and then a few days by started become more natural like it didn't start. Start to feel funny making affirmations in the Mirror and saying you know what you're worth this you're going to get through this. You're strong. They feel shoot. The is but it's so powerful and know that the ultimate resource a source for wellness in mind sad and gratitude is in the food that I eat if I eat sugar. I'm a mass anxiety hangs Social Anxiety Gloria. I'm an introvert. So it's really hard to pull those pieces out and be social as public speaker if I'm not eating right foods which helps that bent clarity and just being the best version of yourself because you think that followed us. The hardest part sues really be happy. You deserve that success. Success user sex to radiant slipped. Where is your husband? Probably Sleeping Right now. The interview is she she did. I didn't do it. Ah Okay okay so so that all sounds fine well but it can so so much sound like an you alluded to this Mike. Hey I've got the secret. I just tell yourself you're better and you will be better right right like it's just it's so fluffy and I think there are so many bullshit self-help books and speakers I am I unfortunately I I'm not cynical about much but I am pretty cynical about the rod at so many people preach because like that actually becomes more debilitating being than just feeling like crap to begin with right like I feel terrible. Go in listened to somebody. Tell me how amazing I am. All I need to do is believe and then I go back and for a day they are too. I feel good and then all of a sudden thaw back into my lies and so now only not only am I believing the lies. I used to believe but now I'm also believing this new lie which is and I can't can't even talk myself out of it. No how do you steps through the. I mean I know like it's it's a lot of repetitive conversation with yourself. I I love the fact that you said that. We need to be habitual in bill bill habit into their spot. Like how do you begin in graining that in such a way because we are our own worst liar like we lie to ourselves more than anybody else right. We are jerks to ourselves. Yes we don't we. Seriously I it was is really being mindful of this Virtual activity of neuro plasticity framing. where I'm taking every single negative thought in building it to a positive positive and they start catching yourself saying no to everything? And you're like why am I saying no to these opportunities start saying yes and Opportunity Surf eight or you start your lay your foundation and say no. I'm going to get paid for every speaking opportunity from here here on out and the next thing you know you're saying all five hundred dollars. Five hundred turns into one thousand once you know and I mean your life changes when in an average he said it's not about it's about the offer it's about everything effort into it because that's what really matters at the end of the day so in terms of a question about creating a habit I again. You're talking to somebody who used to think all hippie ships you know what I mean. So the affirmations fasting your desk duty meditation was just for two and I started meditating every morning and night for thirty minutes. It depends but really centering in washing. My brain of of those terrible thoughts helped to start fresh so meditation in building. A routine are amazingly powerful for bringing in habitual success mentally. I should say okay. So you're on this journey and I mean today it's really easy easy to talk about because and I know you still obviously have your struggles but like you're doing well right like you found ways to overcome you've become a Very again well known You know people are attracted to you and your story and want to hear that for themselves but how do you begin working with an advocating for people. Because I know one of the one of the reasons that you know you and I ended up deciding to have this conversation here was because you know people role that are struggling with disease and I am very careful to save these words but like disability Because I don't want to impose things on other people that are not but like when people are stepping through these struggles for themselves. I mean you had the freedom to do this on your own kind of right like you write your own story you work for yourself How do you help? People Begin to step through similar struggles when their life is spiraling out of control. That's a a question and I. I know that that requires a massively. Strong community asked professional therapy. If that's your loved ones I think it it revolves offs different angles and perspectives for recovery. For anything like that but I reinforce every single time I have a conversation with somebody whether it's a client of trying to master their reputation or their From the different labels community and they're just trying to get into the workforce. Where would you say there? Ah would you say that you're the what the differently abled community district. It's all about words right and rhetoric in how we use them. And you're in an interview you can say that make you shine as a superhero versus a perceived limitation right. I love that. Yeah so so would I like to say is that we all are limited. You know we all have trauma. We all have blown that we have faced in the past. Different limitations are different based on who we are in our challenges adversity adversity relatives. You're worse day is so own so real for you or stay really real for me. It doesn't make mice rebels worse than yours or vice versa so having having that understanding and that baseline of the fact that we are all messed up but we are all worthy of ink successful and how does the start of work ago. Okay so here here we go I wanNA push back on you and I and and I know you're going to have an answer which I love so I believe that we all struggle. I mean I went through a period of anxiety and depression Shannon wanting to crawl into a hole just a couple of years ago that like you know a year prior. I would've never thought and so you know I have my struggles and I've gone through tragedy and everybody's he's gone through their say. Unfortunately I believe that some of those outwardly manifest themselves differently than others which then Dan creates a perception in society that causes that society to treat people differently to look at them differently. I WANNA believe Dave and I do with all my heart to the best of my ability believed that we have all been created with the same infinite amount of worse and value even no no we are uniquely created and we have unique experiences. I want to believe that and I try to do my best. But that's not the way people are treated and so then then when you let's just pretend for a second that you were working for an employer and you all of a sudden you get pregnant you go through this huge huge traumatic event that leads to now. Oh my gosh I have this disease and I can't walk and John I can't see straight and so I really can't come to work but I want you to work with me and that timeframe seems to be limited in people's tolerance of you right like so things do get treated so much differently than others and so what do you say to that because I feel like like we all want to again. We we all want to care for most people want care but sometimes times are are the way care looks changes and that can really be harmful to the people that are struggling with us the most. Oh Amen so I mean you bring up the worst epidemic in our society today which cultural perspective. We are comfortable with what we're used to. Because that's what we're used to so this is this is the way it must be. This is how it is. This is what rate in the world still not true inaccurate and the moment we opened in our minds up and embrace differences whether that's only physically culturally bats in the beauty happened and so I use this example right so I have a funny walk with my brain damage. I have a Olympe. which is it you can't tell but if I'm really bad if I'm really sick I will need a mobility device? So it had Parkin- a parking lot a handicapped parking spot. Somebody looks at noon says. Oh she's too young she chew. She's not overweight. She A Park. There I have people come up and say stuff like this to my peers to you. You're a must be a really good day for you or something like ah those conversations.

"I mean I was block island and bedridden and now I am making a living vein doing what I love every single day and really really got it. There's nothing stop you other then yourself. Yeah well yeah I mean again so this is something that's talked about a lot. We talk about the fact that we have to focus on the things that we control. This is something that I work with my clients on his office I possibly can. I talked to my kids about all the time right. Focus on what you all. It's about effort not outcome and so so let's just like dig into that so you Even today right or no. Let's talk about early on so early on you start understanding you have this disease disease and the only way that you are truly going to overcome it is by reframing your mind practically what does that look Gleich like I mean are you just talking yourself out of like being in pain or being ruled like what is that. It's it's hard but it becomes. He comes habitual It you know so whatever. That is catching yourself. Every single time you have a negative thought that crosses your mind. And I didn't didn't realize how disgustingly negative I was. I mean looking in the mirror and I also lost one hundred pounds because of the Diet that I've been onto control which is another control piece but I would look at the mirror and say you are one disgusting.
