"Leak problems. I'm Scott Carr. And I'm Susanna Palmer in the Bloomberg news room. As we've been reporting, the man who jumped off the iconic Tribeca skyscraper known as the Jenga building has been identified as Bed Bath & Beyond CFO Gustavo arnall. The 52 year old jumped off the 18th floor on Friday according to police, but was not identified until today. The company has been facing turbulence for some time now with the chain planning to close 150 stores in reduced 20% of its workforce. We're hearing Russia doesn't support an oil production cut at this time, and it is likely OPEC plus will keep its output steady when it meets on Monday. Russian opposition to a production cut highlights a debate within the organization of petroleum exporting countries and its allies, all known as OPEC plus. This as oil consumers globally brace for a showdown this winter with the Kremlin over the price of its crude. Energy rationing in Europe this winter is starting to look all but inevitable. Germany's Klaus Muller, president of the federal network agency energy regulator warned last month that even with gas storage 95% full, there would only be enough for about two and a half months worth of demand if Russia switched off flows. It did fail to restart the Nord stream one pipeline. German storage now stands at about 85%. The average interest rate for credit cards just reached the highest level since 1996, we get more about that from Bloomberg's Courtney down how. Consumers who carry a balance on credit cards are paying an average annual interest rate of close to 18%. The Federal Reserve's aggressive rate hikes to curb inflation are largely behind the move. Many issuers base what they charge off

He made an initial court appearance yesterday before a federal magistrate judge on a single count of assaulting a member of Congress with a dangerous weapon which turned out to be a key chain with two sharp points on it. The charge carries a potential maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Jack a bonus was arraigned Friday on a separate state charge of attempted assault in the second degree and was released by a local judge. That prompted criticism from zeldin and other Republicans who held it up as an example of the need to reform New York's bail laws. "I'm Scott Carr And I've done these Pellegrini in the Bloomberg newsroom Investors are bracing themselves for more geopolitical turbulence as Russia's invasion and the war in Ukraine becomes more painful for both sides on the ground Anastasia amarosa chief investment strategist at I capital says she thinks investors should be ready for the war to impact financial markets this week as Putin digs in The escalation is more likely than deescalation I mean if you are in the shoes of Vladimir Putin who is trying to get something some support a payoff for this unspeakable invasion then the type of back down is probably not now Emeralds also says this is starting to dawn on investors Lutes is cutting its rating on Russia to see a from B three with outlook negative not surprising as Russia and Russian companies scramble to figure out how to make payments on debts as a sanctions block use of Russia's reserves of dollars Another key currencies Ross now to guest problem among the companies that have dollar payments do soon As does the Russian government itself And Putin has signed a decree saying companies will be allowed to pay hostile foreign creditors in rubles and for a full list of Russian companies with payments due soon Well you can find that on the Bloomberg terminal Jeff Rosenberg senior portfolio manager at BlackRock financial says all this is really putting the fed between a rock and a hard place as it tries to fight inflation while the war in Ukraine reaches Clearly here the shock to commodities the negative supply shock prolonging the inflationary environment is going to make this a little bit more durable in terms of market impact and economic impact as a geopolitical shock And Rosenberg with us there on Bloomberg radio And Cupertino based Apple is set in April 11 deadline for corporate employees to return to in person work and will more on that coming up here on Bloomberg radio Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than a 120 countries In the newsroom I'm Denise Pellegrini This is Bloomberg Bloomberg opinion informed perspectives and expert data driven commentary on breaking news Welcome to Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg radio bringing you news comments on insights from Bloomberg opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm your host June Grasso This week some Republican leaders draw scrutiny for comments about Vladimir Putin A party which 30 years ago 40 years ago was led by a person who called the Soviet Union the evil empire Now it's led by a person who can't find anything bad to say about a guy who's trying to destroy democracy Also on the show America is more energy independent than ever So why are gas prices so high We're still part of the global oil market when prices go up somewhere else They go up here Plus will 2022 really become the biggest travel year to date Some obstacles may prevent that from happening The big danger is whether it's geopolitical or inflation will kind of stop that in its tracks But first CDC director doctor Rochelle Walensky recently announced new mask wearing guidance as the country moves forward through the coronavirus pandemic We want to give people a break from things like mask wearing when our levels are low And then have the ability to reach for them again should things get worse in the future Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic we're beginning to learn of its collateral damage One of the largest is COVID's disruption to cancer prevention and care Screenings and treatments were put off with serious consequences Bloomberg opinion columnist Lisa Jarvis says there's a lesson to be learned in all of this The best way to get back on track is to ease access to doctors How vulnerable are cancer patients to COVID Cancer patients are among the most vulnerable That's because often the drugs that they're taking to treat their cancer make them immunosuppressed which means that even if they get vaccinated they might not elicit the same kind of immune response that you or I do And so that makes them very vulnerable Even as we start to take off masks and reopen society there's still going to be at risk for contracting COVID and having a very serious case of it You have a personal story Tell us about it That's right In October of 2021 my father in law was diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer And it really was complicated by the pandemic from the point that he was diagnosed which happens when he went into the hospital in severe pain and it was overrun with COVID patients And so he was tucked in a hallway overnight He had to sleep there and then the next day was delivered this very bleak diagnosis alone because of COVID He wasn't allowed to have any family with him once he was admitted So his journey kind of continued from there and COVID really affected the way that he received care and his overall experience as a cancer patient This led you to consider the effects of COVID on the screening for cancer Yeah maybe think a lot about ways that COVID had affected cancer prevention care research One of those is screening So as you and I both know in the spring of 2020 everything shut down and they canceled appointments that were for any kind of basic need and that included preventative screenings for things like colon cancer and breast cancer And so we saw something like 10 million fewer diagnostic screens between January and July of 2020 And those things started to open back up that backlog persists And so the worry is that as people continue to delay getting those preventative screenings that when they finally do go in and get that kind of test they're going to come in at a point where their cancer is more advanced and harder to treat And also I've heard from people that the backlogs there are unusually long backlogs to get those cancer screening tests That's completely true I mean I'm at an age where I'm supposed to start getting colonoscopies which don't seem very fun It's easy to put it off but my own doctor had me wait a full year because right now they're still seeing people who have some sort of symptom that make them want to put them at the front of the line So this is something that really could persist for a while and one concern is that when people do finally come in and they may have a more advanced cancer than they would have if they'd gotten tested 6 months or a year ago that the healthcare infrastructure isn't quite there to support them after these last two pandemic years So what are some suggestions of how to handle this or how to support it I think one thing that happened during the pandemic that was positive and was necessary but let's hope we keep it is that the cancer community changed the way that some of the rules for how they do clinical trials but also just provide care So if you.

"I'm Scott Carr You're listening to Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg radio I'm June grosso The jobs boom is leaving more men behind That's the title of the most recent column from Bloomberg opinions Allison schrager who says the key to getting men back in the workforce starts in high school So what do the stats show is happening during the recession as far as men leaving the workforce Well I mean that was the thing that I found most striking there wasn't necessarily a business cycle no longer term structural issue which is a lot of men have been leaving the labor force And it kind of interacts with the business cycle And that every recession a lot of men lose their jobs or leave their jobs and they just never come back And that happened with a Great Recession It happened with the recession in 2001 And it also has happened with the pandemic is that anyway unemployment is pretty low almost as low as it was before the pandemic labor force participation among men is still almost the whole point lower What men are most likely to drop out of the workforce Like I said I actually just say a whole point lower These are prime edge These are men aged 25 to 54 So some people retire But primaries is what you really want to worry about because these are people who should be working And what we're seeing is mostly men with a high school education or less tend to be the ones who leave and don't come back And has anyone analyzed the reasons why they might be dropping out Yeah I mean this has been a mystery that's been troubling our economist for a lot of years I mean some of it might be that if you don't have a lot of education it's a harder economy to make money in now I mean a lot of routine jobs are disappearing So it could be it's just harder to find a job Americans move less So if you're in a region that lost a lot of jobs to technology or globalization there might just not be jobs in your area It also could be impact of the opioid epidemic There's two theories there one is despair that you're so upset about not having a job that you're going to take opiates The other is that you end up with an opioid prescription and ends up taking over your life So it means you have to be on disability and don't work There's also a rather intriguing theory which is we have better leisure options Like before what would you do if you're a home all day Now you can play video games or watch good TV So not getting a job is a little bit more compelling than it used to be How does it compare to women How often are women dropping out of the workforce I mean we see some with the pandemic as you would expect because of all the child care issues But women it's been an opposite trend For a lot of years women were entering a labor force as you'd expect with birth control More women's equality for years we have this trend of more women entering the labor force But as leveled off it hasn't gone down We don't see women leaving the labor force quite as much but we don't see the gains we are seeing that started in the 1960s So this dropout how does it affect families and how does it affect the economy as a whole Well I mean if you can imagine it's terrible But just from an economic perspective I mean this is a sizable population And the more people you have working and engaged with the economy the more the whole economy grows the more people benefit also socially it's very destructive This could be a reason of the causality still uncertain about why there's less marriage about life families are less secure If you have a non working father the son is less likely to get education and work himself As I said the reason why I brought up the brothel in the beginning of this story was that I was just struck by how many women I met in the broth of came from families were none of them then worked or if they're a man who worked intended to be the grandfather And just you had this just women who lived in communities were very few men worked And I'm not saying that's why they ended up in the brothel But I think that's another example of how destructive this can be What kind of policies could change this Well you know I think it's a hard nut to crack It's hard to actually execute this A lot of the policies are around training you know if the problem is is that there's just not jobs if their skill has been like well let's give them the skills And so then we tend to turn to community college Although I think in a lot of ways the evidence for community college is not that compelling often because community college programs don't give people the skills they need There's high dropout rates And to some degree I think that's a bandaid for what's really broken which is not a great secondary school education So I think we could improve that Maybe offer more vocational programs instead of high school that used to be more of a thing It's still a thing but it's not as common as it used to be So I think that's a big thing And also I think making it easier to innocent a little unusual to encourage entrepreneurship I mean there's a lot of ways even if you don't have a lot of skills you can now work you can do various forms of gig works and platforms So we could do things to make that easier to get people more engaged in the labor force Thanks Allison That's Allison schrager columnist for Bloomberg opinion Let's turn now to something that motivates us all to work harder Bonuses But does it always Every employee welcomes their big annual checks but Bloomberg opinion Sarah green Carmichael says ones that are bigger than expected and bigger than those of their colleagues seem to have the biggest effect How.

"Sunday So over the moon to have landed that talks about them I'm Scott Carr And I'm susannah Palmer in the Bloomberg newsroom An off duty New York City police officer was shot in the foot Saturday as he was leaving a vigil at a Manhattan community center It was the 7th time and NYPD officer has been shot this year The shooting happened around four 30 p.m. near Broadway and 138th street in the borough's manhattanville neighborhood The officer was taken to Mount Sinai morningside hospital in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery No arrests have been made In the week ahead investors will continue to position themselves for what they think the Federal Reserve will do with regard to interest rates Brad McMillan is chief investment officer at Commonwealth financial network The fed came out and said yes we are going to raise rates and the market reacted And then the market took back took a step back and said but wait a minute the economy is really doing well So earnings are going to be fine valuations are a little bit lower but on the whole onward network And I think that's where we're going On Thursday we get inflation data in the form of the consumer price index for January We'll have America's workers are ready to pile pressure on their employers as they play a risky game with their bosses the story from Bloomberg's Charlie pellet They have spent the past two years heating their bosses and the pandemics unprecedented demands they have watched products disappear from shelves inflation surge and their paychecks purchasing power shrink According to a nationally representative survey conducted by the Harris poll for Bloomberg news America's workers now want more much more about 55% say they are likely to seek out job offers from other companies to get raises of their current firms Charlie pellet Bloomberg radio Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm susannah Palmer This is Bloomberg This is the Bloomberg business of sports show re explore the big money issues in the world of sports and Michael Barr I'm scarlet Phil And I'm Mike Lynn Can he cross the line first In his own I remember seeing that I can't say what I said at first because I'm like oh my goodness gracious and I'm sure you've heard that before he is the most decorated winter Olympian in U.S. history That was Hall of Fame short track speed skater Apollo Ono capturing the gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy and we are pleased to have him on the show Thank you for joining us Thanks for having me The first thing I have to start any athlete in the Olympics Literally the world is watching I can't imagine the pressure that is on any athlete at that time Well there's a tremendous amount of pressure I think for every athlete but there's also I think a tremendous amount of joy and happiness that they have trained so hard They have made this Olympic team and now metaphorically speaking to kind of ripping open the curtain to show the world and themselves all of that hard work and dedication in that split moment in time So while I think that there's obviously a ton of external pressure that we've seen that kind of leaks into the athlete mentality but really most important is that the optics are there and they've been through this process before The ice rink is exactly the same as it was two years ago one year ago three months ago There's nothing that's actually changed in mechanically but I think we do definitely host this competition on a bicycle And because of that it feels like a decade or sometimes two decades is really teetering on this moment in time that only lasts 40 seconds long Also part of the game is when you win and you get a gold medal put around your neck You get lots of opportunities to monetize However we're in a situation now where athletes travel all the way to China They may test positive They may be in quarantine when they're supposed to be competing That takes away that possibility for them to get those endorsements How do you think that plays out I mean how much of that is part of an Olympian's journey I think the cold hard truth about the Olympic journey is not really been financially incentivized in the same way that perhaps many other professional sports are You're absolutely right when an athlete goes through with the games and something happens that perhaps is outside of the control They get sick they test positive Something weird happens where they're just not on their game And then you take that dickhead long Sacrifice and dedication And at least from an outside perspective looks like it's gone forever And there's no real value there And so it is tough right A fleeting window in which an Olympic athlete wins a medal and then goes on television shows does the media circuit is celebrated by Brad's embraced by Americans all over the country Seems to at least from the data we've seen be getting shorter shorter And by the way that 15 minutes of fame was really short before I was very blessed in my career to be able to receive a lot of that.

"I'm Scott Carr This is Bloomberg Wall Street week with David Weston from Bloomberg radio We've talked about the fed and monetary policy Let's turn now to fiscal policy The bottom administration now at the end of its first year must be thinking a little bit about whether there are any mid course corrections might make specifically on the question of inflation that Larry summers has talked so often about Larry summers are a special contributor because remained with us So Larry what about what the administration could do Put aside the fed with the administration could do on the front of inflation So look I think we need to be honest and we need to recognize that the main action The overwhelming action is with monetary policy and it's with the overall posture of fiscal policy The overall posture of fiscal policy has been substantially sat Unfortunately set by the mistakenly large fiscal stimulus that was enacted at the beginning of 2021 The administration's moving towards doing the right things The spro release was probably a constructive step but as we saw they released the spro and immediately after the release the price of oil actually went up That's because the release was a little smaller than many people expected It's because unlike after Libya the Europeans didn't join in the spro release It's because the whole thing had been widely telegraphed for the last few weeks So probably if this whole sprout thing had not happened oil would be a few dollars higher but we've kind of done it and we are where we are where we are I think the administration should do what it can to encourage oil supply in the United States but I think it's mostly developments in capital markets not public policies that are driving where we are on oil I was just gonna say just to be clear sprout is the strategic petroleum reserve for some people who aren't as conversant with this as you are But you guys are like low hanging fruit I was going to ask about other possible regulatory relief such as tariff relief for example So I think the administration does need to find its way to more rapid action on tariffs I think it's plausible that they could take up to half a percent maybe even 1% out of the inflation rate over the next 18 months with properly strategic tariff reform but that's going to require them to adopt a more forward looking attitude towards trade than they have already I think if they could emphasize by cheap rather than buy America that would be constructive as well I think as they look at their various regulatory agendas they need to think about which ones are imposing costs on business and be careful These are all steps that I think are significant But they're not ultimately what is going to determine the outcome and why I've tried to speak to them I think it's very important not to divert attention from the central issue which is the management of demand and the recognition of overheating The truth is that we don't have slack in our labor market today And there isn't room for more demand to employ more people without unsustainable inflation And I wish it was otherwise the people who say that more demand does enormously good things for disadvantaged people are absolutely correct but you have to do things that are sustainable if you want them to be sustained And we're in the unsustainable place right now in terms of how hard we're pushing and pressing the economy Laura let me ask about one other regulatory initiative potential We've heard President Biden more than once say he wants the FTC to look into the oil companies whether they're gouging right now if I can put it that way because the price of oil going down has not been reflected the pump There are reports from Bloomberg and elsewhere that perhaps the administration's thinking about a broader ranging use of antitrust and perhaps other laws and regulations to really go after people that they think are passing along price increases Does that make sense Look we need stricter antitrust enforcement in America One of the things I'm encouraged by about the Biden administration is that they're going to bring us stricter enforcement of the antitrust law in America That is a very important thing Where there are abuses they should be corrected If anybody thinks that gouging is an important cause of our current inflation they are dead wrong And a policy approach to inflation that put some theory of gouging or exploitation or bad corporate behavior at the center of policy would be economic Ivermectin It would be a dangerous and false diagnosis and a prescription for a very real and serious problem I think the administration won't go that way I certainly hope it will not go that way And if it does it will be a very dangerous sign that they are overly responsive to the hard democratic left which I have to say I think has been the source of many of their difficulties Larry when we turn back next week to the build back better plan We'll have Congress back in session They're going to negotiate any more You said you don't think unbalanced it's that bad on the inflation front You think there are a lot of good things in there But what could be done to improve it from your point of view Let me be very clear If I had to vote up or down on it I would definitely vote up Let me be equally clear that I think over time it will make substantial contributions to making American society both richer and fairer and more sustainable in its environmental impacts That said I'd be more comfortable with the measure David If there wasn't quite as much fiscal stimulus in the first few years and I think it's an easy way to achieve that The.
