"Jennifer. Welcome to status. Go thanks jen. I'm really happy to be here today. I am really excited about our conversation. I know you and i had an opportunity to chat. Gosh probably towards china last year now About the work that you're doing so i'm looking forward to our audience being able to hear about the exciting things that you're doing but before we get started you've been holding out on me a bit. When we first talked you shared a bit about your background as an executive in the insurance industry. Why she didn't share was that your career started in sports marketing. And you've worked for the likes of the orlando magic the sonics and the storm. You have to tell us about your journey from sports marketing to insurance and now to the executive director of apprently. No that's a long sordid story so let's see the My background in sports Originated with my dad. My dad did play by play for the royals. And the chiefs and Then went on to. Cincinnati was third man on the reds in the early eighties. On wwl w and. I just grew up in sports and it was kind of a natural offset for me When i went into the insurance industry. I actually started off as a media. Buyer my first stop With progressive insurance. And cleveland and i went very quickly from doing media buying into running north america. Marketing event. marketing and sports. Marketing basically auditing fifty states at a stage where progressive in the nineties was trying to figure out its brand identity and that just sort of became the tipping point of the the spot where my sports endeavors began and before the nba. I worked for scott. Boris representing baseball players. When i left progressive and did marketing endorsements for those guys. It sort of seesawed between professional sports and insurance In in a kind of weird way because you know insurance and car dealers and everybody else spend so much. Money in sports marketing. It made me a strangely hot commodity. Because i understood the business side of it.

Leeway Duke Johnson can really force his way out of Cleveland Right now because he's under contract and he's a professional is by making it ugly and he did try to make it ugly to the best of his ability which is just going out there and say I wanna get traded but Luther Campbell is far more for more better. "So a texter writes in here Sampson, always bashes Scott Boras? But he does he realize he did the same type of corrupt business. When the when he sold the stadium for as much as possible, in my opinion. There's no difference between Boris getting the client the biggest contract possible. And that what say you Samson and good morning. Good morning to you. Yeah. Boris does get the best deals for his players. I just comment on the way. He does it. I did everything above board out in public, and he does things behind closed doors, and I never turn my back on any sort of play or any sort of fan or anybody who wasn't being helpful. I never turn my back in any politician's who were angry or upset or anybody. Whereas Boris when players are no longer good enough for him. He turns his back on them. So there there are a few subtle differences. But I pre- she ate the comparisons. I mean above board. They burst out laughing on above board. Everyone did. And I don't know why people do that to Samson because you're not going to find anything that's not above board where the accusations not above board Saint perception that's around Scott Boris is business dealings, just I guess maybe because it's Billy corporate Twitter account. I'm not sure they follow you around the stadium deal. There's just I mean, it's obviously, you know, it's toxic. It's not for a lack of looking by you guys. So while I'm say, right? So just find something there's literally I did everything in public, which is part of the reason why my public pl- viewpoints people are so negative towards me which is beginning to turn. I think is not bad. But maybe not I never held any punches. I want to that time that you told that crowd bleep you really try the tide that help. Well, here's what has changed. There are people in our audience who like David Samson. So that leaves the number no longer zero of. People who like David Sampson, so it is an improvement. Yeah. And I think honestly in probably disassociating yourself from Jeffrey Loria is helping you a little bit too. Well, listen, my brand also is honesty. There aren't a lot believe it or not. That is true. They're not a lot of former executives out there on the air who are willing to say that things I'm willing to say who have the eighteen years of experience running team most of the voices in the media right now our voices that that just come from making noise, and they don't really know anything and they've never done anything other than being the media. So from my standpoint if I give insight into what really happens what players are really thinking on opening day where front office is thinking when they do a contract. And when I can talk about the business of sports, I think there's room for that. And then to be funny and talk about stuff with you guys. I think it's just good to be human. There's so much. You know, you think about the interview with Princeton there. He's nervous to talk to you guys. And you have to find a way which you're really good at at getting him to be okay. We talked about it with Conan Levitz are cone. I was scared of you for a decade because of one question US a decade. And then he comes on the show and accidentally torches Hanley Ramirez while he still plays for you. And it's the greatest executive decision that he's ever made the worst one. And therefore he was right to fear me for a decade. That's the beauty of it is people people get on the radio. And when you're really good at getting a player to say something or an executive to say something they don't want to say. And then they hang up and they realize, wow, I just told the truth. But I didn't want to say it. That's when you've made an interesting interview for your audience. And so that's all I try to do is. I try to forget having to have anyone asked me the question. I just come right out and say things that people know are going on, but everyone else's afraid to say, you don't sound defensive at all, man. He's defending himself. Well, though, they should as right now. No, I'm actually explaining what I I love the entertainment side of it. Like, I love all the banter back and forth..

"I'll offer you thirteen years three hundred thirty million no opt-out in Philadelphia or for years forty five million per that's one eighty four years. One eighty to go to LA dodgers at if we put that out as the poll eighty percent dodgers, right? I don't know because people might look at the security of that that kind of money. It felt like everybody got what they wanted Scott Boris is proud look at the contract. I got Bryce Harper got that that contract, and he's got security there and Philadelphia got a great player. Is it possible? The ballpark factor. We've been talking about this week played in it would play in for me because he doesn't do well in San Francisco and doesn't do well in Los Angeles. I thought the Yankees would go all in and if they didn't have that albatross of a contract, which in Carlos Stanton, could you imagine Bryce Harper. You had the lefty righty with judge and Harper. Oh, and you got that little porch out there, man, signing trade question. Mark. Okay. Got another poll. This is simple. We have talked about him yet. And I'm I'm going to introduce the topic Twitter. I can get into it now, but I do want. I do want to talk about this. Let me do a meet Friday song. And then we'll kind of cool down a little bit here. So Seton if you got to meet Friday song, it feel it a little eat it or any. No, no, no. I do wanna talk about Jason Witten. I will say this. I learned this yesterday. Nobody knew this was coming. Even his broadcast partners his his booth mates. Did not know. This was happening. I have a question I want you to save your answer. Was it Jason Whitten's complete choice. What he did yesterday? Save at Laurie or Jeff passan. Great baseball writer from the mothership. We'll talk about this deal with Bryce Harper. And if that's the case what's Mukhi worth. What's might trout worth? What's Aaron judge worth? And why not take that dodger offer because I thought he was going to be signed sealed delivered with LA. All right, Seton. What do you have for me today? Let's say we'll start things off here with Brian in California. Chrissy shooting. I like this. Wow. That is strong. Wow. The obviously the tangible changes or non changes when it comes to jobs, and what will be produced they're manufactured there won't be manufactured. There are the most important questions that everybody wants answers to the things that interest me are fascinate me. Intrigued me is the word. Intrigued me more than anything is the the back. You know, the the back stories of what prompts that Terry. Go Trump, President Trump conversation and. Charles said what you and I were speculating with two minutes before he walked in. He had as he as we know he likes to do he had to have those television screens going and those cable news networks on Wednesday. We're just. Excoriating him for this supposed- pullout of Foxconn from Wisconsin. What what were those? We were railing on those headlines that were just flat out rock. You know, Trump touted ten billion dollar factory pulling out of Wisconsin Foxconn to cancel Wisconsin project. Trump walker. I mean that was just wrong in the first place. So did did the police just get so upset watching this that he caused Terry? Going says, Terry what the heck are you doing? What's going on? Fix. This could be that easy. And you wonder how different it was actually now. And they say, yes, we're gonna make the plant. We're going to keep doing the LCD screens and all of that. It's clearly not going to be at the same scales. What they do overseas. Louis. Woo. Who's the main US head renew? Told Charles Benson in April very similar to what Reuters was reporting today. But it it caught fire in some ways, according to Charles. How much do you think is a? When it comes to business dealings like this. When it comes to the public relations element of something this big, do you think that there's a lot lost, no pun intended. Translation. There's something in terms of when you have foreign entities dealing with one. Another in the Mark, I'm specifically not talking in the marketing and PR and house realms worded. Yes. I mean, I really wanna know. I'm sure when you talk fast, facts, and numbers and nuts and bolts and dollars. And that is a universal language. I think you can of course, when we used to talk about the the the. The different terminology that can be used and how to appropriately execute a PR plan, especially if you're going to have a new story come out in the national source Reuters and and something lost their when you have a Chinese company and an American company, and and yeah, and the integration of the two different shouldn't leadership. That big you should have a a PR person in every country handling that for whatever region you need to take care of. That's the world we live in. Now, there's more PR people. That's one PR voice in this St Louis Wu. He's kind of the US guy. It was doing it. Right. Does that does he works with them? And some doesn't pass still. Actually, we and we missed that both. He was here. He's not there anymore. Okay. I don't know what he was here in the building during the Friday forum was defeated. They tune stay tuned. Gosh, I just it makes your head hurt. It really does. And who knows what will happen in the next half hour. Okay. Let's move on this off. Don't don't don't say that. Because there's somebody who just turned on the radio on. They're gonna they're going to build it. All right. This story is courtesy of CBS news. The big mothership CBS news CBS news. It tells the story of a woman who has a five year old daughter, but the is one of thousands of children conceived with sperm from an anonymous donor. She went to find out more information about the donor wanted to learn more about maybe some of the health risks or just the health history of the donor effort to look out for her daughter, and she has gotten herself entangled in a mess. And I I'm willing to bet she's not alone. There's gotta be other stories like this across the country. We'll have the CBS report here. I'll play you the report. And so a five minutes pretty comprehensive, but it lays out the whole story. And then we'll unpack this and way in and get your thoughts as well. Of course, four one four seven nine nine one six twenty is the accurate mortgage, talk and text line. Here is the report by CBS news, Oregon women's attempt to connect with her daughters. Anonymous donor is raising difficult questions about the practice and may even lead to a lawsuit. Danielle toy shirt told us she used the DNA tests from twenty three and me reached out to one of her daughter's genetic relatives but north West Bank where the she received the sperm donation, then sent her a cease and desist letter. Anna Warner spoke to toy Cher who says her plan for more children genetically related to our daughter is now in jeopardy and a good morning. Good morning. Well, it's one woman's story of unexpected consequences that raises complicated questions. Can anyone who's a donor expect anonymity? When so many people are. Connecting and finding genetic relatives online daily. She's really into music singing, she's very athletic, very strong. Danielle tortures five year old daughter Zoe is one of thousands of children conceived with sperm from an anonymous donor, and she's definitely a social butterfly what she did not get from me towards your wanted to know more about her daughter's ancestry and possible health issues. So when she and other family members decided to get DNA tests from company twenty three and me over the holidays. She added one for Zoe and lo and behold turned up what appeared to be one of the anonymous donors relatives. I imagine. You were surprise shock. Yes. And it sounds like you didn't go looking for that. No, not at all the donated sperm had come from northwest Kreil Bank, which offers donor's anonymity. But Twitter says the apparent relatives she found on twenty three and me listed themselves as open to messaging. I said I don't want to cross any boundaries. I just want to let you know that we're out here. And we're open to contact. If you are the relative responded, I don't understand. So toys, your says, she let it go. But then she got this a cease and desist letter from north west cryogenic, telling her not to contact the donor or learn more information about his identity background or whereabouts. The Bank warned it could seek twenty thousand dollars in liquidated damages. Worst of all she says it took back for additional vials of donor sperm that she purchased sperm. She'd planned to use to have Zoe's genetic siblings. So what was it like for you getting that devastating? Shocked. I was crying for days. Like, I can barely eat because I felt embarrassed almost like here. I thought I was doing this thing. I thought was in the best interest of my daughter. And then I just came back on me. In just such a harsh way that made me feel like I did something terrible like a criminal northwest. Kreil Bank told us it does not prohibit DNA testing. But said concern arises when one uses DNA test results to contact a donor and or his family. The Bank says clients like toys have contractually agreed to not independently seek the identity or attempt to contact these individuals Thrasher says that contract was online. I mean, you just click the boxes, plus she says, it's not all about her daughter is an actual living breathing. Flooring human being who did not sign that contract and contracts or not many donor conceived children, and their families are finding each other all of us. Thousands of us have made these connections. Wendy Kramer runs. The donor sibling registry. A group that connects donor conceived children and their families. Her own donor. Conceived son has found eighteen half siblings. Most of them through DNA test matches. It's a right for everybody to know the truth about their their own DNA their own background their relatives and their medical histories northwest. Kreil Bank says not all donors will want that opportunity. It told us there's a human being on the other side of the gift who may have a partner parents job and children of his own and uninvited contact could jeopardize these relationships and families, but experts say in twenty nineteen that contact may simply be unavoidable. Dr Peter McGovern, isn't infertility specialists. The problem we have now is that the science has kind of overstepped where we are in terms of legality. Do you think that it's even possible? Promise someone that they will remain anonymous donor in the current environment. I think despite our best efforts we cannot premise that anymore. But toys, your says with the loss of her vials, the promise of more children may be ended for her literally took a baby's future babies now after we contacted north West Bank for this story. A Representative set toys her an Email saying the Bank would refund the money she paid for those additional vials of her donor's sperm, but did not offer to give her wiles back. The representative. We spoke to the same one at north West Bank told us that this is the only letter threatening legal action that they've ever sent to a client to his knowledge complicated questions. Hands on both sides, you that again, the story they do a great job of easier to do that than just kind of thumbnail at ourselves pretty comprehensive there. CBS news report on this woman. Danielle Tisha toys your five year old daughter Zoe you heard what happened. Here was the quote that struck me, and this is the one that we can discuss at four one four seven nine nine one six twenty on the mortgage, talk and text line. All of us. This was the common name by Wendy Kramer. She runs the donor sibling registry. The group that connects donor received children and their families all of us thousands of us had made those connections. Here's the line. It's a right for everybody to know the truth about their own DNA their own background their relatives and their medical histories. Northwest. Kreil Bank said not all donors will want that opportunity though, it said there is a human being on the other side of the gift who may have a partner parents job children of his own and uninvited contact could jeopardize these relationships and families. So you have to who's right is right. You have the child who wants to learn more about who their father is was do. They have a right to that information. Do they have a right to track them down or their family, the family of their father down or is the anonymous donors right to remain just that anonymous does that supersede. The interesting thing is that the specialists said that doctor said that the problem is you've got science has sped up so quickly that it is now ahead of the legal system. So let's dive into this, shall we? Who's right is right. Who's right supersedes that of the other four one four seven nine nine one six twenty and the academic mortgage, talk and text line is it even a right at all. That's another question that you can answer. Hey, we.

"So I should I should backtrack and say probably the pitcher to ever have struck out Williams twice a game. But in any case, certainly this is the most meaningful instance of. Happening. Even if it's not the that's because invested is thing. Now, he is a celebrity beloved by all this global community that we existence if you're out there, even if you're not you'll be out there. I think there will be trying to get in touch. All right. So winter meetings where you in a Scott Boris gaggle where you ever close to him as he was spouting analogies and hundreds of people were gathered around holding microphones up. I don't I don't. I don't understand. I don't understand what the purpose is. I know that I don't mean to turn this into some sort of just like, oh Scott Boras and the news, of course, they're gonna rip him on the podcast. I don't want to end up some sort of just like caricatured of myself or of ourselves. But I just didn't understand. I know it's like the annual tradition. That Scott Boris has giggling he gives us whole speech in the hallway outside one of the conference rooms at the winter meetings. And I understand that look he's trying to get attention. That's his job. He's trying to get money for his clients. I understand I support the business of what he does. But I just don't understand what. The purpose is of covering that. He, and I certainly don't understand the purpose of having two hundred fifty microphones shoved in his face when every other line is just going to be repeated just have like one pool reporter just be there. Yeah. Now, I don't know Cup would deliver the speech if they were just one pool before president having a little one on one boisterous conversation. But no, I was not present. I didn't wanna waste my time. Certainly even if I did want to be in the gaggle enough other reporters said they were trying to be in the gaggle, but they're so far away. They couldn't hear him at all. So yeah, I just I don't understand. I mean, the nautical metaphors last year where one thing but the one quote this year, right? There was one in particular that people just kept tweet us. Do you have in front of you? Yeah. Well, there were a couple. There was one he said this is not a race where every car is labelled. So it's not a regatta this. This is a race taking place on land in wheeled vehicles here presumably, and then the other one the one that was shared more often. This was about Bryce Harper when the nurse walks into the room with. The thermometer. The issue is not what the thermometer says that day. The issue is what is their health when they're ready to leave the hospital so relevant to Jerry DiPoto during the winter meetings. I guess if the nurses taking his temperature, but I suppose he's just saying that temperature is a snapshot of that moment and doesn't tell you what's going on with the underlying situation. And therefore if there are no Harper talks taking place at this moment. It does not tell us anything about the health of Bryce Harper's free agency is it ill. Why hospital? I just don't understand why he went to the hospital for this. What unless he was recently in the hospital is he suggesting that right now Bryce Harper's free agency is not well because. Well. And work. Yeah. You would think you wouldn't want to connect your client to a patient in a hospital. But I don't know. I mean, I like the tradition of everyone gathering around Scott Boris. It's very silly and senseless and no wouldn't pays any attention to what he'd says in terms of its actual. Meaning I think we're just here to be entertained by whatever nonsense metaphor he comes up with. And I don't think it actually affects his clients earning power if he's able to craft a particularly apt metaphor this year, it's not going to get them many millions of dollars more. So it is very silly. And and kind of a waste of time. But I like it. It's a tradition, and it's not hurting anyone I know. But I think that when you when you repeat these things over and over even if you're just doing it with a wink, and non you're just kind of being ironic about and you're just saying, oh, look at this crazy thing that Scott Boras said you're still giving him.

"Got a huge range of your musical love. Yeah. So lot going on today. Very very busy five o'clock hour. The bulls are flying to Mexico. There are already there. Know a lot of both painful be like, you know, what if you wanna stay there little longer by all means. But yeah, they're playing a game there on Thursday. I believe and Maliki Andrews is gonna join us here at five ten they did Jim Boylan spoke today in just was more even goofy or today, and the the crazy and dysfunctional dramatic balls keep on truckin. So we'll talk to me coming up at five ten we air. The Joe Madden press conference at four thirty. You'll hear some of the stuff about his relationship with THEO and him being on the hot seat at five thirty before we talk to Jesse and there's a lot to get to with the cubs and also the socks sock serene on both Harper Machado, Ken Rosenthal wrote a piece earlier who knows if they get them. We have a bet Carmen is heard of from his socks insider that they will not be outbid so whether or not they want to take their. Money is another thing. But it sounds like the socks are in heavy pursuit of at least one of them. And that's why I was willing to make the sandwich bet with you that either believe that the White Sox will sign one or the other because they believe both guys are going to be take the best to offer guys. And listen, I'm not throwing shade at them in any way, shape or form. Listen, you get very a football career is much shorter than a baseball career on average. But you don't have forever to make generational wealth. If Bryce Harper decides he wants to go to the White Sox, which would give him maybe a lesser opportunity to win a title as soon as may be going to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he takes a higher offer from the White Sox. My never begrudge him. There are some people who use don't. You're not worried about titles. You don't wanna wanna title? Well, they got some good town coming down course. But I think you would also knowledge that the dodgers are more equipped to win for sure versus the White Sox short. I'm just telling you. I think that Bryce Harper is going to be a guy that takes the highest offer. Yeah, we made the bat in I took that they won't get either. And it's not a not a SOX eight. Yeah. I'm not in just because I'm a cubs fan. I am open to it. I'm in what you've taught me show me mode. This is a team that's never signed a free agent for more than what they signed Jose Abreu for. And what was that sixty million dollars? So this is a franchise that over the long history of Jerry Reinsdorf, and Kenny Williams, they didn't love to deal with Scott Boris, Scott Boris represents Bryce Harper. So I'm in show me prove it to me mode that not only are you gonna go over one hundred million go over two hundred nine and you may have to go to three hundred million. So let's see these are two highly recruited guys. And I'm not sure if they get him in the what are the SOX have committed after the Nova deals like twenty five million of payroll. It's very little. Yeah. I mean, they've got the space. They got the space to make that deal and still probably not even fall within the top twenty payrolls. Yeah. Oh for sure and even less committed silly problem. Sign them. Both. Someone suggested that why not go sign Machado Harper bring up then. And let's go if they signed Harper and Machado, let's just say on average thirty million a year right each at sixty million. That's eighty five million when you factor in what they've already got committed. I mean, you've got teams already committed to one hundred and a half that would only be half of what they've got what most a lot of teams have committed these socks fan. You should be demanding get both go get the double dip. You know, the bears to sandwiches if they signed them both or just one I'll give you two sandwich. Yes. I'll give you three the White Sox. Yeah. So our bet is just over one day signed to both of those two. Yeah. This year, you get three you. Do whatever you want on it. You could get double meat if he want. I'll let you get double me. Where is that? Just like is that just a subway thing double meetings? Double meet at pot belly. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So pretty much any sandwich. You get that double Butler. Yeah. And then the bears Packers week. The magic number is one the Vikings lost to the Seahawks yesterday, Monday night football. And then not only do the Vikings lose. But they fired their offense coordinator. And there are a lot of people. You know, how I feel out? I I'd rather watch a pitcher's duel in baseball, I'm more prone to wanting to watch a higher scoring game. Like I liked the what was it the Rams chiefs game more than I like last night's game. But I didn't mind last night's game. I didn't mind either because I had a rooting interest. But if I didn't have already interest, and they have wandered. Well, this was it wasn't a Westwood gain Jacksonville and Tennessee two teams that really have no chance of going to the postseason. You know, you in a rooting interest because you wanted the Vikings solution. Yes. That's right. There was something at stake for both teams. So that makes it a meaningful game to me, which draws me in. I mean, both quarterbacks were were were not good. I mean, Russell Wilson in a winning effort. I think through for seventy two yards and an interception. I mean, one of the worst I've ever seen. Wow. That was bad. But they found a way that defense is flying around and they can run the football. Now. I'll take my chances with our Chicago Bears lakefront at the Seattle Seahawks. Come to town. They don't make me nervous. They are a team that needs to be taken. Seriously, just like you need to take the Packers seriously on the lakefront this week. I don't think the bears are in any position to not take anybody seriously. But as I said to you earlier I issue a distant challenge to the bears secondary. Or just a bare defender Aaron Rodgers just broke Tom Brady's record for most consecutive passes without an interception and what have the bears defensive players done better than anyone in football. This year. Intercepted the oppose. Quarterbacks passes. Let's snap. That street. Snap that street. Yes. Let's get that chance. I believe Sunday's environment. At on the lake front will be the best environment for a football game. We've seen there in years. It will be better than the Vikings game. It will be better than last weeks Rams anymore. This is this is. Yeah. The air raid siren will be going. This is your rival with your chance to clinch the division in the most unlikely year against Aaron Rodgers. And a, you know, it's not like baseball when you clincher division in the celebration you have, but this is to not be taken lightly. This is who would have ever thought the bears would be in a position with three weeks to go in the season to clinch the division at Soldier Field against your bitter bitter rival like. I'm going to go Matt Nagy? I'm like bears fans bring in strong. This should be a party like atmosphere. Are you going name? Not. No, it's too cold for me. Shirtless. My cow. Well, thank you for that. Fanatic. I appreciate that. Viking Scott, you're on ESPN one thousand as Scott. Wow. Guys. Let me just say first of all, you know, we had a chance to score otherwise. But what a rough throw the flag. There was the guy the other whatever that the referees buying this. The guy on the other side of the kicker looking right. We're Bobby Wagner jobs. Throws the flag. There is no way. How can you be convinced that after you throw the flag song? And that's someone told you that shouldn't be a flag. And then just like a pass interference reviewable play is if the ball's tipped review, this has got to be one of those store, then you could have challenged the play. I was rooting Scott. But it was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. There was another one that one rivaled the call in the Dallas Philadelphia game where they called offensive pass interference on the Philadelphia tight end. That is the biggest joke of a call. I've ever seen. There was I think there was a roughing the passer call that happened later in the game briefly early in that game. Yes. I mean, the the officiating was not good yesterday and not good on Sunday. Yeah. Three one three three two three seven seven six Tom in Glendale heights. You're on ESPN one thousand eight time. Hey, guys, let's taking my call a big fan of show. Appreciate it. Yeah. So what are you talking about the way? I do think it is really interesting because I do think they're gonna sign either price are pro or Manny Machado. Dr they can't sign both, obviously. But. Why couldn't they? Well. Here's why here's why I wouldn't instead of doing that. I'd rather have Bryce Harper and say Dallas kaikal because what I'm selling. Those guys is I'm selling them, the AL central an interesting that I saw was Cleveland four games above five hundred against everybody not in the AL central. So they were twenty four games above five hundred against AOL central. Typically, Indians were window is closing. They have about two years left on their window. If you're Bryce Harper hidden guaranteed rate field, you're gonna hit fifty pounds every single year. And if you guys can come here, and they all central wide open, and you could really compete with the Cleveland Indians. And you don't have to worry about other other other places like New York Boston and Tampa Bay, right? You want to go to the clubs? I mean, you want to go to the cubs your deal with, you know, the brewers, and you gotta deal with, you know, Saint Louis there's not a lot of competition. Neil central and it's ripe for the taking. I think you bring up some good points, Tom. I mean, then. Yeah, it is one of the most Helmer friendly ballparks. There is in Cleveland's window may be closing earlier because of themselves like one of the big rumors is they either going to trade a one of their top pitchers. Kluber could be gone. You know, they've decided that their run is over. They're going to divest. So it's going to be an exciting next. Few days with pairs Packers week with these baseball winter meetings. Jesse is gonna join us more on that. And then there's only the bulls as I said to you in the week that song was made in the mid nineties when the bulls were rocking the stadium and then the United Center, and they would play this song only the bulls only the.

"Whether that average annual value surpass that Ranki say thirty five million plus per year or total value the contract, which is John Carlos Stanton with three hundred twenty six million Bill surpass one or both of those milestones. But I think he wants to see what Machado gets because my child might be in that same tax neighborhood. So I don't think that Bryce wants to sign the Machado has behind him and signs one for dollar more than what Harper got it may sound silly. But, you know, listen, Bryce Harper, and I've been saying this and she was sixteen and I did the story and this is on the cover nip. Everything's been pointing to this free agent market. You know, getting out of high school the GED after sophomore year going to play junior college for year to become draft eligible really never considering expansion from the Washington nationals. So it was all about getting him on the market at this age, you know, with prime years up for free agent bidding and the greatest leverage that I've seen. It's the greatest leverage. I Saint since Alex Rodriguez who's also twenty six when he was a free agent. And remember that the meetings were in Dallas. And of course, they had a press conference at the end of those meetings, Tom Hicks, Rangers owner was there, Scott Boris Alex Rodriguez. That was the case though, I think Richard where you know, you wanted to have the press conference at the meaning now you can have a press conference in the city and have televised. No matter when or where it is. But I think Scott like the fact that they were able to, you know, lift the curtain on that contract at the winter meeting could have it in Vegas with rice because he lives there. But I get the sense that it's going to be a little slower play. Again. I think Machado will drop I probably Philadelphia and then Bryce a little bit later, Tom. I know how much you love writing. It's the reason you are still writing in fact, so I wonder when you are attending one of these winter meetings, and, you know, longer work for a newspaper, and quite frankly, you you're no one is put to liberated is going to sort of say, Tom, you know, you gotta file at this time at this moment, it's a digital website. And you given your years of seniority rightfully sort of have a little flexibilities to win. You wanna right? Do you miss? Maybe not MRs not the right word. But is is this a different experience for you? Now, where you're at the winter meetings, you're talking to people you're observing stuff. But you do not have the pressure of deadlines that other writers there do. Yeah. It's definitely different. You know for me. Also, I still have the sort of the energy that comes from being on air at Emily eating. I we'll have a big presence fair. I'll be on each day. Whether it's, you know, interviewing manager general managers analysis on trade breakdowns on players. That's to me really kinda cool because you know, once a work is out there that somebody signs, you know, the next thing is what does it mean? You know, who is guy was he mean for the team what their next move, which means for the other team that lost the player. There's your so many layers the look at some of these transactions that go on that it's really cool to be able to be all of that in real time for it'll be network and for the magazine writing each day, you know, it's always interesting to find an hard as well to find take that hasn't already been covered in the previous twenty four hours. And that's what I like I like that challenge going below the surface say, hey, listen. I know you heard about. Signing yesterday. You know, the parameters of the deal, you know, every dollar how it breaks down year by year. But maybe didn't know this about the player, or this is what it means for this team, or this is what they need to do next. That's still fun to do. And I think there's a big Phil big appetite for baseball. When it comes to the winter news and terms of perspective. Yeah. I should apologize again. Tom Verde chew also is a prominent person in MLB network. I'm sure Lorraine Fisher PR will be dot com will not be happy that I did not give that some love at the intro. But I'll give it now..

"And he's Scott Boris is really upset that this is client JD Martinez, wasn't part of the MVP. Final vote. Right. Yeah. I saw he said that JD Martinez signing was the most impactful signing in the history of baseball vide- Martinez signing. Yeah. He said that forces as he is he busy tweeting back and forth with Bill James. Most ridiculous because that's not the biggest. Standing in most impactful scientists in the history of the free agents that I got forward with free agent. Maybe vigorous agent was saying that kibbles the greatest closer in baseball. They're going to do that. Saying they don't even saying Moore because he knows his client's going to be a free agent basically next year. And how can you go with him because he's now in his early thirties. He's he's an okay outfielder. He's more of a D H, but say after say the Red Sox go another one he's the big private. They win the World Series. They go the World Series, whatever next year and another team wants to pay him thirty million dollars. Yeah. Do you? Do you match that? Yeah. I mean where does it end? Well, I mean, you paying them twenty five million now. One thousand nine hundred last year. So, but you also got some contracts coming off the books, right? You've got obviously Sandoval after next year comes off the books. Worsening Custodio at some point comes off the books after this year. Hanley Ramirez comes off the books. So there's some savings there. That's quite Scott Boris is willing to take any like does. He never gave. That's great. What you do is. You can't. Yeah. But he wasn't able to do that this time. And if JD Martinez does as well as other suitors. Well this year they will be probably from Scott Boras talking about his client JD Martinez. His leadership an impact on the team was extraordinary. I don't know of any player at any time in my career. That's had a greater impact on team apart from his performance with his leadership and influence in the locker room. And the unique information he conveyed I've got one I've got one right off the top of my head. And then he said, I don't know of any player that's had more of an impact than with JD did designate because she's talking about as a free agent to write like the most impactful free agent we've ever seen. Okay. Barry Bonds left the Pittsburgh Pirates after nine hundred ninety two when sign with the San Francisco Giants the pirates made the National League championship series in one thousand nine hundred eighty two they were a dumpster fire for the next fifteen years after bonds left even longer than that. He went to the giants. They want one hundred and three games. They improved by twenty five games when he showed up they had a ballpark built, basically. Because he went to San Francisco I'd say Barry Bonds is more impactful than Jay. What happened was he took the good steroids with them? Knows what JD Martinez is on took the good stuff. Pittsburgh wouldn't let them I'll go I'll go to one of your favorite players. Greg Maddux sign as a free agent brains. I think that was thirty impactful Scott Boris. I know what he's doing being. The truth. He's always told he's right now in contact with Bill J Craig kimbrel. Is that the best closer in baseball? Then we'll be not debatable. Depending on his agent agent to saying it is the IRA would indicate it's got some numbers that he not throw out there. Like mariana. Vera. Yeah. Trevor Hoffman backseat asleep from one thousand nine hundred eighty eight thousand nine hundred ninety four not as good not as good. Sorry. No. But that's what agents do is tell truth. Yes. No says guys going to get paid. And he will definitely would be. If he does not looking at all this money to the Red Sox are gonna have to. I gotta you gotta target guys. And we have to look at it and say these guys the Red Sox must bring back. They cannot afford to lose them. And then you gotta work your way backwards. Can we pay this guy now because we're gonna pay him? Can't let Mckee vets-go period gotta keep. So would you be surprised if they and I would say almost don't bring back of all the if you're going to have to spend that type of money or? Look, the trades animal rights. No, I think he's a core. Member of the team. Okay. Pay him twenty five million a year, maybe eight years making eight and two hundred apps in an Mookie are the two most important players, Benintendi, who you still have cost control. Jackie Bradley, jR. I think could be like a salary dump at some point. If he starts to make ten twelve million fourteen million a year for guys a great fielder in a streaky hitter. Maybe move on from him. But they've got nothing in the farm system who replaces these guys, that's what makes this difficult. Right. Yeah. That's why you have to bring him back. I mean, obviously, it's not even a question. Mookie means a superstar is a top five player in the in the league. You can't let that go and Zander again, I look at the position and how long the Red Sox to find stability that position. And how important it is. I can't see that. It would make any sense for them to trade him or or let him walk in free agency. If you're trading him, you better be getting back, some really really good prospects. And I still wouldn't do it because I don't like those types of traits. If you're the Boston Red Sox should be trying to take back Nora specimen prospects, step back Yankees did that. And that's how they reinvented themselves. And then it would go ahead and sign those players they traded back, and that always makes sense against the poll question of the day, if you could keep only one free agent who would it be evolved Kelly kimbrel or peers at John sap twenty-five right now, it is a landslide Nathan of all the fifty eight percent Joe Kelley twenty one percent Craig kimbrel. Twelve percent and nine percent for your World Series MVP Steve Pearce when we come back. We'll be joined by Luke, Vargas, talk media news. "And I kind of like I'm actually getting freaked out with how much agreeing with Scott Boris on points because I feel like I disagree with him on on most things. JD martinez. Not being a finalist. Here we go. Let's do it that really that really kinda that really kind of confirmed not my nightmare too strong. But my my my fear that the most valuable player ward is becoming the wins above replacement award. This is this you and Peralte. I mean, my God you're fucking social media tripping on JD Martinez there. I didn't even tweet about it. Oh, well, then it was all him. Yeah. Fuck steve. There was. I don't understand. I knew it was coming because I was watching the actual MLB network award show and they teased the AL MVP segment with you're not going to believe the shocker, and I'm like, whoa. Did like bets trout not even like bets has to win. There's no way to make the outlying did trout, not even make it like what's going on. And I go, you know, what I bet it was JD didn't make it. And this guy is a dummy. And that's exactly what it was JD Martinez was anywhere from the third to fifth or sixth best player in the AL. Here's the thing. Like, so there's no outrage for him not getting on a ballot that only fits three people. It's the thing about the season that JD Martinez. Just had is that if if you were to we're just looking at baseball differently, and I get that. I mean, we're we're finding new ways to evaluate players performances. But if if JD Martinez if this season. And everyone's numbers unfolded. Exactly the same. And this were two thousand and four JD Martinez is the American League EP probably so yes. So I'm just trying to put it into words that his season should not be discounted because he either eight didn't play defense or beaten plant very well when he was out there. I don't know what we're going back in time though. And I'm not saying you're saying at some point Tom we've got to cut the cord from how shit you was assessed. How? Yeah. And it is what it is today. Yeah. I don't like you don't play a position that's going against you point Point behind behind us. us. Just it's just not a gold Glover. Let me let me take issue with your wording to it's not discounting his season. It's taking the entire thing into consideration. I know that we don't care about defense because it's not as fucking sexy. And it doesn't put runs on the board. I get it. I watched the game the same way. I also get that we can't measure defense with the level of precision that we can measure offense of contribution. Correct. I get it. But like the fact that he basically doesn't contribute on one side of the baseball is a significant factor in evaluating player for sure yes. And if you go back and look like your point about two thousand four if you go back and look at the the MVP awards that we find most objectionable now, you will almost always find that. It's because they gave it to a guy with a lot of RBI over a guy who skillset was much more broad and whose contributions may. Have been slightly more subtle Wanda solace MVP's, which is maybe like the late nineties equivalent JD Martinez season was better. But it's the late nineties equivalent to what you're talking about those are like preposterously bad MVP's in hindsight. Yeah. And you don't need war to tell you that like, I just feel like. Yeah. Okay. So basically what you're saying is that he should have made the ballot over Jose Ramirez. Right. Yes. Because trout Mookie are kind of in their own. Yeah. They're in their own class. Okay. JD Martinez was still for for whatever he was defensively, which was below average. He was still seventh in the American League in wins over placement. So to be to to be in the negatives in whatever measurements you wanna use for defense..

"I don't obviously. But if I did because who cares? We don't care about the money because it's not our money. Well, let's make it your money guys. Would you spend three hundred and fifty million dollars? If feel competent about it on Bryce Harper. No, I wouldn't. But I do want to say thanks to listen to you make a lot of arguments there in the make a lot of sense. But you can't throw the he's never wanna playoff series, Adam. Because you're the one that's been a spa espousing for the golden bat thing there are many times where he doesn't even get a chance to win those playoffs. Series everything else in that sense rival, thank you drag. Well, that's the let's take that have ninety percent of what I say all the time makes sense. Listen. Traits usually fifties ninety. I mean, that's that's pretty good. But that's the problem dry. Problem with baseball. You're going to pay a guy standing Gundy said this yesterday, you're going to pay three hundred and fifty million dollars who comes up four to five times a game. It's ridiculous. And when he comes off you bats to forty eight it's absurd absurd. Absurd. I listen. I agree with you. And yet he's going to get it from somebody. As is Scott Boris, his agent says Harper's bazaar is now open. Okay. We'll see where that goes. All right. Let's go to college. Let's start in basketball for Zion. Williamson RJ Barrick camera Duke. Did it Kentucky? I have said Stuart's gonna make people pay attention to college basketball before we normally do which is after the Super Bowl. Yeah. It made us. I mean, listen, we've never talked about college basketball so early in the season ever in the history of our show, and we were talking about it yesterday because Duke stole the show they stole the sports worlds. I am Williamson. The thing about Zion. Williamson guys he was a YouTube sensation before this. So everyone knew about this. But to see play out against Kentucky article and to see that he's just not a dunker. He's the guy who has actual game. He has range. He has touched. He could distribute the ball. It is it is absolutely breathtaking. It was amazing to watch. And. Yeah, we're all going to tune into watch. These freshmen bly and watched it fifteen play at see if maybe if they can go undefeated. Maybe it'll be the best team ever, which is saying something when you consider the school. We're talking about it was amazing. It was fun to watch. They had made college basketball interesting in a way that it hasn't been the regular season for college basketball in a way that it hasn't been since maybe the fab five I don't know what the last time we were interested in a college basketball team. Yeah. Your rights. Do we we had this note today dukes go to one hundred and eighteen points in that debut? There were twenty NBA teams in action last night and they play eight minutes longer. None of them got one hundred. Yeah. Utah Utah was a crisis. They got one hundred seven Stu, and by the way, they did it against Kentucky, by the way. Kentucky. Jank John Calipari was sitting there with his laws look on his face. And I can't believe that coach K is now doing what I've been doing for years because coach guys going to do it better than I've been doing the thirty four point loss for Calipari. His worst ever as a college or NBA coach going to college football the first two weeks of the rankings. We have pretty much pick who they were going to be where do you see the possibility of a shakeup happening going in the next few weeks? Well, Mike, this is interesting. Right. And I have a question for you guys are related to college football. But this is interesting. So let's say Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC championship game. There's no scenario which Alabama is not getting it. But what happens there? So does Michigan get bounced out? Once Notre Dame get bounced out, Mike, I would ask you this because they put this committee together to have some sort of vision. Where does this not the four undefeated teams make it to the final four, Mike? Michigan played Notre Dame right now the debt are they neutral field who do you think would win that game? Who was the better to there is no way. Saying michigan. Everybody's saying Michigan would blow out Notre Dame Michigan has gotten better. So is Notre Dame? You realize Notre Dame did since that first game. They have a quarterback who leads the nation in completion percentage. Okay. So yeah, he's heard he's going to miss this game. We'll be back next week. So to say that all of a sudden Michigan with blowout. Notre Dame to me is ridiculous has Michigan gotten better. Absolutely. They've gotten better. But you asked me I've already said if Georgia beats Alabama they're both in Clemson wins out there in and if Notre Dame wins out there in and Michigan is going to get left out. Now, Paul finebaum went the other way. He thinks Michigan may get in over. Notre an undefeated Notre Dame team. I don't think that would happen. But then again, I'm not one of the thirteen that are that are picking that are deciding this.

"Saying well maybe we'll get somebody maybe we walk what play the kids if we don't you just holiness cards close to the vest and meanwhile tony clark and scott boris feel meanhile highly had to do something here and because of the bad faith because the players association and mlb owners now don't trust each other so much these rules changes that the commissioner has been trying to get the players to go along with our sprawled and we'll see i mean this is another highstakes game of poker where rob manfred may enact these unilaterally putting a page clock put in all sorts of little links and on some terms of the rules bari majors say well tree i don't want to intimidate the players even further will just let things stay some scattered be done in all you have to make some positive moves toward speeding up the pace of the game so my guess would be if the players don't come to an agreement with management that he'll do it on his own and again you know what we're looking at these things incomplete things i am or saying while the chief sites can't get together this just reminds your congressman haji say the far apart they can't get the i can agree on anything and then last minute are actually an hour laughter the last minute they come up with a budget deal and that seems to be the way it works and we all of get ourselves into a panic in a frenzy all they got to change that gotta judgments this guy is falling and then they work it out so in a failing though work it out but in the meantime it's kind of nervous hoping that baseball doesn't do something stupid which they have in the past anyway we move forward porzingis injury this week at other knicks were showing some signs earlier in the year that they've turned things around off with the.

"I guess i everything he says is like reported as news so i guess he just is feeling the pressure to just upped the ante every time he says something but this is way out there so god i did you see the dan hailom quote the other day he appleby's response to scott boris just in case anyone didn't see it let me pull up the exact quote so boris was complaining about on no collusion and then the league fired back let's see where is the exact quote yeah from from ah from top major league baseball executive dan hailom responding to scott boris quote if mr boris spent as much time working on getting his players signed as he does issuing inflammatory and unsubstantiated statements to the press perhaps the events of this offseason would be different cub bath yes that's i mean i can't disagree with them after this extremely laboured comparison so i have uh one quick thing i just i want to remind you that you and i are both going to die some day and i tell you that not to put you in a bad mood but possibly to improve your podcasting because we received an email earlier today from listener scott and i can't believe noone sent us this before this is a study that appeared in the journal of sports and exercise psychology in october the title of this study is he dies he scores evidence that reminders of death motivate improved performance in basketball it is by a few different authors i believe that they are professors at the department of psychology at the university of arizona we've talked in the past on this podcast about how baseball as a a distraction from our own mortality and it turns out that being reminded of your own mortality can possibly be a performance in.

"Mistake but leverage not always making for lopsided transactions right yeah if they actually want to get done to ninety which by the way is pretty said to begin with there were what they're only four teams that looks like below ninety this past year and a couple of them were pretty decent the brewers the race but yeah i mean if the marlins go back down to that that is just very sad end without stanton too so you're basically guaranteeing that they're not going to be good for i don't know how many years sets just as whatever fence they have left would be pretty justified in just taking the next few years off at that point yet book all right next item okay we've got scott boris blessing be shohei hey otani posting system which makes sense i will try to read part of boerse's quote uh i don't really know what it means but in any case just go to quote him this is scott boris talking to can rosenthal of the athletic and also of twitter and also of everything that is reported in the industry scott boris talking by show yo tony quote now the unsuspecting referring to otani no longer has the protection of his japanese team or the mlb posting rules he is precocious greatness cast adrift forced into the mlb lifeboat and his admission is handcuffs that prevent him from getting at least what his older lesser valued peers received into nakas case more than one hundred fifty million dollars scott boris very upset i think the weirdest part to me of boerse's grievance here is throwing otani's japanese team under the bus claiming that there were aiding greedy but outside of that he's basically right otani's getting screwed yes i dunno if the analogy works perfectly i don't know he wasn't really cast adrift they would have been happy just to have and so i don't really see this as a a lifeboat situation like he's trying to go to a bigger boat basically but yes i am with him obviously in yeah boruses always a an advocate of the players and of course the players are his clients.

"Future this is scott boris the agent for brice harper saying quote we go to great lengths with the soil to make sure it's not wet there are drying agents on the ground i don't know what technology we apply our studies that have been done on the composition of having a wet pace for certainly something we to look into this injury was directly related to implement weather and a player putting his cleats on on the bag in its slipping across because the surface was slick well if the bases were already will and they remained on the ground jeff and it was covered up by the tarp the may be the basis wouldbe slick even though it was covered up by the tarp there might be condensation that's on the base i don't think there basis should be changed i think than the rain delays situation the basis should be pulled up in that way it's a it's a drier surface as as even as rice harper said it was a freak accident is some doesn't happen very often don't have to be proactive and try to change the game because what happened the price harper i'm glad that the injury is his was not so severe that we won't see him again this season but the fact that we are thinking about changing the base i think that that's that's ridiculous i don't think that you need to do that i don't think that that's something that's necessary for baseball well buster only did talk about it this morning on the morning roaster espn mlb insider and he thinks that baseball shook look into maybe altering the shape of basis i do think that it should should sparky conversation among between major league baseball on the union about the actual composition of the basis because we've seen this type of injury before at a meeting of the nationals went down with this we saw my trout carries thumb uh early in the year and i don't know of theories a better way but i think that e let's face it with the improved technology of this era maybe there is maybe it's worth having a conversation you saw last night bright sharper stepson to bag his foot slips is there something different about the basis that would make them safer for players uh it'll through the years up when i covered the auriol's cal ripken there was always a concern because he would lunges the base.
