"Just the beginning. Discover your thrill at Nissan USA dot com. We're also brought to you by the ringer, podcast network, put up a new rewatchables on Monday night. We did the vanishing. A movie that was poorly reviewed and did not do well in the box office. And yet, Chris Ryan and I, we love it very much. It was on cable, basically for ten straight years starting in 1993. And just the definition of a rewatchable. Trick the coffee, Jeff. If you want to experience exactly what Diane experienced, you must drink the coffee. That was my bad Jeff Bridges imitation. Coming up on this podcast, we are going to talk about LeBron James and the scoring record. I went through the Laker game tonight. I'm going to give you my full report and a bunch of additional thoughts and then after that, Peter schrager comes on to talk about chiefs, eagles, and a bunch of the NFL storylines from this week. And that's it for the pod. We had a double partner on Sunday Night. And then on Thursday, we're going to do a big deadline extravaganza for the NBA trade deadline. So stay tuned. For that, let's bring in our Friends Pearl Jam. All right, tape in this it is a little after ten 15 Pacific time Tuesday night. Just came back from the Lakers game LeBron broke the scoring record. "So in four of their last 5, couldn't want to Thanksgiving. They can move the ball. Healthy receivers again, Williams is finally going to be playing for them. Defense has been okay. They're good in the red zone. They're home. This is a huge game for them. It's not quite a kitchen sink game, but it's close. You don't want to go 5 and 8. Hard to make the playoffs of 5 and 8. I think the line should be three. I know Minnesota's ten and two. I don't really care. Detroit's favored by one and a half. Sounds awesome. We're betting a $1 million on it. That's our third bet, fourth one. Jets, plus 9 and half in Buffalo. This is the weirdest line of the weekend for me. I think the jets are good. I've watched them, I watch them play the Patriots twice. I watch them last week, almost beat Minnesota. I felt like they could have stolen that game. They could move the ball really good defense. The one thing you can do is run on them, but the bills other than that. We wouldn't say they have an awesome rushing attack. A man on lotus, Mike white. I don't even call him weight lotus and why I just call him lotus. That's my guy. I think the jets can keep this close. I think they can possibly win. And I think talent was, they're not that far away from the bills. They're getting 9 and a half points. That's crazy to me. This line should be jets by getting four and a half, 5, something like that. So I'm grabbing the 9 and a half, $1 million on the jets. Plus 9 and a half. And then the last one, a little funky here. I love the forty-niners against the bucks. I'm all in on Brock purdy. We did a whole thing with the schrager segment about how these really, really great defensive teams with some weapons can sneak by with the right quarterback. I think they like purdy. I think he's fine. Just give us a C++. The bucks are awful. The buck should have lost to the saints, the bucks have pulled two games out of their butts, I think they stink. I think they're terribly coached. They're an awful first half team they've averaged 8.1 points in the first half this year. It takes them three and a half quarters to get going every game. We're in a leverage that against them. There's a bet on FanDuel, forty-niners win the first half, forty-niners win the game plus one 15. And we're putting a $1 million on it. Just take care of business. Go up early. Run the ball, put them away. I know I just took Brock purdy over Tom Brady. I'm very aware, but he is 45 years old. And then two small bets. Doing a little dolphins first half against the Chargers. Night game. Dolphins 13 and a half, going over. I think they have a big first half. Solak laid it all out. The Chargers defense, this is the worst nightmare for them. So if the dolphins can't score 14 points against them, I don't know what to tell you. We are putting a hundred K on that. And then last but not least, the underdog parley. 50 K, jets plus four and a half adjusted. With the Panthers to beat Seattle. Is plus 6 40. And it sounds wonderful. It is the Sam darnold's all full circle. Underdog parley, I love it. It's ugly. It's also an ugly tree parlay. It's just a lot of things going on there. Sam darnold, this will be your vindication with the jets when you win this parlay for us. Jets plus four and a half pay at their swim plus 6 40. Those are the $1 million picks. For week 14, notice I didn't touch the Pats game. So I'm probably gonna lose. All right, that's it for the podcast. Thanks to

"And then you get here and it's first year coach, new market, new quarterback, new first year defensive coordinator defense actually been good. A lot of new faces ever new owner. And this new owners didn't hire them. They inherited him, and I get nervous because you get a couple, then you get a few more and then it's like sharks are in the water. And if you do that over the course of the next three months, these new owners, they're made of money. They've got billions and billions of dollars. Walmart money and self made money. Post Walmart stuff. And then it's like, well, I didn't pick this guy and the money's not an issue. Pay him out and let's start a new one. That's a real possibility. Always with new owners. And the way it's going and it's been unfortunate, but you got to understand this is the test. When you're at your lowest and you've got Russ playing like this and he might be injured. How do you how do you change things? How do you figure it out? The jets are coming in this week. They're the hottest team as far as like narrative goes. A win with either Russ or Brett ripon or whoever would go a long way and stopping the bleeding, especially in the front of that home crowd. If you lose that game in front of that home crowd, well then when I say sharks are in the water, it's going to get real ugly real fast. So your guests have included Robert sala and Paul Rudd, who else is on the wish list there for your podcast. You know what? I want to do like coaches that don't talk during the season. I want to get them and be candid sallow was. I want to get like funny, but good. You are the best with the celebrities. When you have Sandler, and I'm like, I'll run through a TV or whatever. And you've got all those guys. Rudd is that dude. But I also want to get like young coaches that the teams are usually a little protective of. I want to get young offensive coordinators, young defensive coordinators, young executives, and my pitch to them is this is a great platform to not talk about this week's game and injuries, but to introduce themselves to the audience and so far we've got a pretty good captive audience that I'm getting a lot of the viewers from good morning football and Fox and I'm on watching and hopefully some of the listeners to your to your show can listen to this podcast just by popping it on. It's good. Go for a workout. Listen, cook in whatever it is, have it in the background. But let's get to know new people that we don't necessarily know all their names yet. Thank you, Peter. Good to talk to you. Good luck with the podcast. I love you, man. Thank you. That's Peter schrager. NFL network, good morning football. A friend of the show. And his podcast this season with Peter schrager. I watched silver linings playbook last night. That's a good movie. Jennifer Lawrence? Yeah. Bradley Cooper. Is that a sports movie or sports related movie? Sports related. They're all about relationships.

"Went like 70 minutes on that. That was really fun. I was glad we did that. If you missed our three part over under NBA podcast on Tuesday, me. We're still house, we went for like almost 5 hours. We did it in person. There's some videos we're putting up on the YouTube page. YouTube dot com slash Bill Simmons. If you want to see us in action, we don't have video of when we thought we were going to dinner with Priscilla after the taping and he just said, oh, I forgot, I can't. And that was it. So I don't know. There's dissension in the ranks. Priscilla blew off house for a meal, which is the worst thing you can do to house. You can punch them, you can insult them. You can do whatever you want to them. But at the last minute, back out of a dinner with House. So we'll see how those two guys resolve it. I'm fine. I'm agnostic. I'm an only child. I'm used to doing whatever. But I think house was really hurt. We'll see if those guys can heal. You can hear all four hours of that podcast. On my feet, right where you're listening to this one. House is going to be on this podcast much later. We taped it a little bit earlier this week, but it's going to be the last segment on this podcast. The redeem team documentary that's on Netflix. We had a lot of thoughts. Some good some bad, but we wanted to give our review and break it down and talk about what that team meant in the context of basketball in the 21st century. That's coming at the tail end of this pod. First up, Benjamin solak, second Peter schrager, we are mixing it up this week. I'm like, David tepper. I couldn't fire him Matt rule. I couldn't fire myself, but I could change the order of what we were doing. And I could bring back schrager for the actual $1 million picks. I tried to get fancy this year, have the two guests have them leave. I take a little extra time, then I do a solo where I do all the picks with them as my conciliators. That's out. I fired myself after 5 weeks. We were going back to me and schrager, and then me doing the million dollar picks after we've already talked about all the games. And then us running the video where he's basically nodding euphorically and saying, let's go a couple times. We're back. It's the only formula that's worked. It's going to happen. So lack next schrager dead house first Pearl Jam. All right, the wringers, Benjamin solak is here. He wrote about the packers this week and why some of their stuff might not be fixed, but I thought we'd start there because I was feeling like reading your piece. That you felt it would be

"What is one thing we're knocking out this week that we got to do this week if we're Peter schrager on vacation just more time with the kids? Is there a more time more time with the kids? Yeah, and it's like I've put on a couple LBs this summer enjoying myself and I'm not usually the fitness guru, but I've told myself, let's get a run in. Let's get a bike ride in. Let's try something to at least give the impression to the viewers that I've been at it and working and trying to get into midseason shape. Pick another week for that because it's supposed to be like 95 all week. What's like the downfall? What puts on the LBs? What's like the go to that? When you do it to every meal, my kid only eats pizza pasta and bagels, and it's like, that's what so I have to eat with them. How old is your kid? I could be best friends with him. Are you a gummy bear fan? Pizza pasta and bagels. I don't even need the pizza. No, I'm not a gummy bear. I'm not a candidate. If you work for the company, haribo, which is this my son might as well be the spokesperson for it. And you better believe I'm taking a bite of one of them every single time. But if they got rid of every single food on the planet, except for pasta and bagels, I'd be the happiest person in the world. I know, I get it. I get it. And then there's this other little wrinkle that I've now fallen into a little bit. And it wasn't always the case, but it's kind of like a new thing. The made it afternoon before dinner snack. That's that could be anything from a plate of tostitos chips with some shredded Cheddar, and maybe a little salsa on it. Like homemade, or that's where you get your blueberry muffin, like, all right, I'm gonna try this and just nibble on it.

"There's so many unknowns and it really makes it intriguing to watch. Yeah, I mean, when Baker Mayfield was drafted first overall, I mean, the word was coming out a few hours before that it was going to be him, but I still needed to hear the words come out of Roger Goodell's mouth to actually believe it. What are the odds? And that's rare that I'm able to ask those questions about anything in Las Vegas. What are the odds that we really won't know? That Roger Goodell will truly be the Paul Revere telling us who's coming to Jacksonville. What do you think? It's a great question. Last year, I was on record saying everywhere that I think it's Trey lancer Mac Jones, Trey lancer, Mac Jones, three of the niners, and at the last second, I said, it's going to be Matt Jones. It's going to be Mac Jones and I had worked with John lynch as a sideline reporter for Fox crew. I've known Kyle Shanahan for years. And to this day, I'm like, gosh, I was even shocked and I know those guys inside and out and they went with Trey Lance. I think that there's a chance that these guys and Jacksonville can keep it secret all the way up until the draft. Now, whether it was John Dorsey or was Elliott woolf or whoever it was of the head coach at the time in Cleveland who let it out of the bag hours before, but we knew baker about 2 o'clock on a draft that was starting at 6 o'clock. This one, I don't think we're going to know. I really don't, because it has been so kept under secret lock and key at this point that I think it might feel like that San Francisco pick, which I watched back earlier this week or yesterday, I watched it back and your reaction rich it was everyone else's. Wow, they actually did it. They took Trey Lance over Matt Jones. That's what we want to hear. We want to hear suspense. We want to hear you to be so surprised when that pick is in, that no one took this trick and it is a pure reality show and even the player that surprised what his name is called. Peter schrager, good morning football, NFL network here on the rich eisen show. So you just mentioned your history of working with John lynch prior to being in the general manager spot and no one Carl Shannon for as long as you do. What is your best guess as to what is the irreconcilable difference in deebo Samuel's mind to want out of San Francisco? I don't know. I've heard so many things. It was originally that he didn't want to be used the way he's used. Well, that's okay, fine. We'll put that in. Then I heard it was that he wanted to be closer to home, which is an odd thing for a young man. Okay, fine. And now the most recent thing is that, well, look, you just need to start a new and let's just, I don't think I don't think San Francisco was going to trade him. And if he had traded, I think it would be in the next couple of days. I don't think it'll be draft day. But just knowing how valuable he is to Kyle and knowing how much they love him there in San Francisco. I don't think they want to hold him hostage in any way, but I just can't imagine they can't come over there. They're differences and make this thing work. Ian rapports said earlier this month that they do want to pay them. They do. I know they do. And I think that they will pay him. And I do believe they're trying desperately to figure this thing out because he is such a special player to them. And he might be more valuable to them than any other team in the NFL. Well, I mean, you know, the idea that he didn't want to be or doesn't want to be in San Francisco because it's not Carolina, right? Where he's from, we saw a video of him working out here in Los Angeles. So this is his spare time if he wants to be on the east coast so badly. Why is he training in Los Angeles? There was a story on Instagram story yesterday of him at nobu and Malibu. Well, I'm sure there's some fine places to eat in the Carolinas too. But you're out here, you're in Malibu. So that one's interesting and the other part is like, you know, I don't want to be and I'm not knocking the guy. He's unlockable. There's nothing to know. There's nothing. I don't want to be used that way. And that's looking confident directly, but that's what we're hearing. I watched some interviews back at the Super Bowl. He was on with Maya coco in Comcast. He said, I want to have a thousand yards rushing in receiving. So is that the case? You might want to play running back too. I don't know. So I think that there's a lot of things coming out of devos camps and a lot of the women are from him directly and I don't know, rich it's a different time in a player players want to be where they want to be. And if he was to actually be traded from San Francisco, I would be shocked, but I can't be surprised by anything at this point. Devonta Adams left Green Bay, which seemed like a pretty good situation to me as well..

"Thanks Brooke That's Brooke Sutherland columnist for Bloomberg opinion Now let's talk about entrepreneurship Bloomberg opinions Allison schrager says amid President Biden's proposed bill back better economic plan and calls for greater spending The way that government can best empower Americans economically is to just get out of the way Why do you think the build back better plan is not a good idea at this point Well you know aspects of it are good I think it's just we don't really necessarily need such a large stimulus at this stage And while some programs are good I think some are very poorly designed which might actually have a lot of long term unintended consequences You think that we're seeing the effects of a decline in risk-taking among Americans how so Well Americans over the years I mean there's a bit of an uptick in the pandemic I've been less likely to move Less likely to change jobs Less likely to start a business These are all risk-taking behaviors that in the past were associated with rising wages And we've been seeing big declines in them over the years Is that a reason why we've seen entrepreneurship decline in part I think so I mean there's definitely less tolerance for risk It's also harder to take risks than before You're in an environment where bigger firms dominate industries that started to get a foothold and also things like healthcare have become a lot more expensive So taking on that risk is a lot more costly Has the pandemic encouraged risk-taking It has in some ways and not in others On the one hand we're only getting incredibly risk averse lives like barely living our home sometime The other hand we are seeing this big uptick in risk-taking which I certainly didn't expect We're seeing huge increases in the small business formation We're seeing the great resignation more people quitting We even saw some moving So it is in some ways Tapping in to that sort of entrepreneurial risk-taking spirit we used to have and wages are also increasing So what can the government do to encourage more risk-taking So I think a lot of the instincts that build back better was the fact that we shouldn't do which was sort of tamped down on risk-taking as it's offered more guarantees offer more union jobs offer more government jobs but they could do instead is create an environment where it's easier to take risks Anyway it's harder to take risks in some ways it's never been easier with all these platforms we have as your assault business owner to connect with potential clients all over the country or even in your community But there are still big hurdles for instance health insurance So I think it's finding ways for people to sort of be more open to risk-taking and take different be able to sort of explore entrepreneurial activities without having to pay big costs for it I mean there are plenty of downsides to risk-taking I think the downside is lately I've seen bigger as is it especially like you give up a steady job You know you are giving up your health insurance you're giving up stability you're giving up all these benefits Working for yourself all these sort of benefits all sorts of insurances are a lot more expensive So certainly as I said the labor market can be very unforgiving So I think this is why a big reason why people have sort of shown risk-taking but I think we can shift policy to support it rather than shutting it Thank you Allison That's Bloomberg opinion Columnist Allison schrager And that's it for this edition of Bloomberg opinion You can read more Bloomberg dot com slash opinion or it.

"So I can check in and see what the answer. Are they going to make you get a TikTok account and do all signs of goofy videos now? I'll do a TikTok dance right now. I don't know how many people will actually watch this compared to Noah, they are. We actually just had a meeting about how to get the word out because I think that's important. We're talking about, do you ever unfollow somebody beside promote their own show too much? And I said, no, I do not. And that was an interesting question. Jimmy, you're pretty good at promoting your podcast. Is there too much? What's the right balance? No. Well, okay, so schrager and I have a thing with this. I hope he doesn't mind me bringing this up. Okay. Schrager will often complain about Twitter. Like we all did. But when I go and check Peter's page, Peter follows about 5 billion people on Twitter. So I explained I try to get him to like, you gotta cut that number down and it'll lessen the animosity you have for Twitter. Now, I don't really get annoyed with people promoting their shit only because I think we all have to do it. And I do think most people I think most people do it, okay, traeger follows 5000 619 people. 5000, I follow 458. Missing out on what? 4400 people that are just annoying. Yeah. I think people know that we all have to promote stuff and I think they sort of ignored. And I think maybe a few people here and there and follow you but not like it's a big deal. That's my take. I agree. And especially something as cool as a new opportunity in your career, it's part of the deal, especially if we're all living in the same ecosystem. I will ask this. You've got this great platform here because people do listen to Jimmy's podcast. Give us the elevator speech. 30 seconds. I'm riding an elevator. Why I should listen to the show and what it's called. It's called Maggie in parallel because her name is Maggie. My name is pearl off. Oh, we ditch mclovin from the Dan Patrick show. I'll tell you why you want to watch a Peter because it's the funniest show. You know the conversations that you and Jimmy and I have off camera. We're bringing a PC version of that where we're old friends. It's got a PTI feel like Tony and Mike, but updated more modern, more edgy. You know, more with it. We're going to be talking about things like TikTok. But honestly, it means we both have real sports shops, but we hope to be funny. And just more of what you and I talk about..

And I never knew this about him at all. And it's all about his growing up with Andy Roddick and having a nervous breakdown as well. We are always, where can I and where can I and the listeners watch this? This is Netflix. So it's the same thing we did the mouse with the palace documentary. I will watch it. I will watch it this week. There's a documentary wild wild west from last year about in Oregon that my uncle was in. I think we talked about it last year. What? I don't know. My uncle filed a bog wine, but that's a whole different side story. Yeah, my uncle dropped out of college and moved to Oregon to be with viral. Anyway, those people who did that documentary, which won all the awards did sports and they did Marty fish. They did this hockey team that was invaded by the mafia somewhere upstate. I can't remember. But they're all amazing. They did a great job. And I'm going to give one last shout out and then I want to give a shout out because I know you guys are old school wrestling fans too. There is a phenomenal show on vice called Dark Side of the Ring. Seen everyone, Jimmy. They had a great season this year. They did them over the summer. I watched all of them. So if you're a wrestling fan, especially old school, check those out. Those are great too. Jimmy, those guys like to party a little bit. Yes. One more alone where they take these survivors. I try. Dude, it's awesome. Alone is the best stuff. This goes back to my point. You have kids. How do you have all this time? I don't care. I've just literally told you that 9 shows I've watched this year. If you asked me about any other show, I would ask me about anything that runs on any network other than CBS. CBS management, bob loves iosh la and he's watching the United States of Al now, CBS guy. Do you guys do you guys schrager? Maybe you sit with this one out. I don't want to get into a fox. But do you guys ever watch football on a Sunday? And one of the guys will do a promo read for some show that's on during the week on Fox and CBS and you're like, what the fuck is this? I'm watching it and I'm seeing as commercial for the Peninsula episode of this is us. I'm like, I didn't know this thing was still on. Grey's Anatomy. It's been on for about 47 seasons. They'll plug it in. Not Reno 9-1-1. 9-1-1 with Rob Lowe, and he's.

"Know them in the NFL and radio and television world, Peter schrager from good morning football and Fox in a fell on Sundays Andrew pearl off formerly of the Dan Patrick show now beginning his own show on CBS sports radio starting next week. A little round table where we just sort of supposed to be a little 2021 year in review went off the rails and it's just a big pop culture sports mishmash of every topic you can imagine and it's too many to name. So just check it out. Give it a listen last year. Did in depth sports media yearend review pod with Andrew Martian and John O ran two weeks ago, Trey akman was on this podcast three weeks ago, Stanford Steve. If you missed any of those, go into the archives, check them out, subscribe, rate and review. All right, let's not waste any time. Round table time now, with Peter schrager and Andrew parlor right here on the SI media podcast. All right, joining me now. We're making this an annual tradition. We did this the last week of 20 or 21. Now, let's take a 2020. Now we're doing it in the last week of 2021. Two of my good buddies who are on the podcast periodically. We've got the very busy Peter schrager from good morning football and Fox and Andrew pearl off who just left the DP show going out in his own traeger Andrew happy new year. Happy holidays. Thanks for doing this. How the hell are you shrinks? Oh, I'm so good. I love seeing you guys. I hope this is an annual tradition because I thought we had a blast last time. And good things on the horizon, Jimmy, you're podcast is on fire. You had the most viral tweet of the weekend tweeting out the Belichick new year's resolution story. I saw 11,000 retweets and I know for you, we're all about clicks, baby. That's great stuff. It's all about a little it's all about getting some attention. New show, you and Maggie, great people and 2022 is going to be our year fellows. I feel it. I'm already, I already have an issue. What's that? So you had the 11,000 Bill Belichick. Press conference. It was awesome. It was a story that weekend. I was happy for you. But I got 4000 James hardened elbow to Laker in the nuts. And I got that out. I felt like I deserved an honorable mention viral tweet. But you're too busy doing what you were on my TV. "Be two quarterbacks in trade next winter. There's as little wilson whispers last year but You know he. He basically saying i don't want to be traded. But here's my list of teams that if you wanna trade me like any of these teams and announce who knows how this plays up but cited find out but I think we're gonna talk about the cardinals. They're playing the niners this week and the cardinals now are weirdly in the driver's seat this division because the rams defense is not as good as i think we thought it was going to be. Aikman talked about that tonight. I pay. I spent three dollars in them. I think it both of my fantasy leagues. I've had they're gonna be this dominant defense suggests they're not just not the niners. I don't know how this lance garoppolo who knows how this shakes out. They also have. They seem to have a black cloud over them to those guys injured left and right. So maybe it's the cardinals year. Now we're about to get two million dollar for schrager. We went against the cardinals spoiler in a underdog partly the week so they go fascinating division. The nfc west. Who could guess who could against that would be the marquis not only the best division but also like the week to week rollercoaster. Ride the vision at the same time coming up after pearl jam. Peter schrager of excited. I are friends who approach all right. Peter straker joins us every thursday. We talked football. Do million are picks. We'd been on fire. We'd went for eight straight weeks dating back. two weeks. Last year finally had a losing week last week. The patriots conditional pick on the patriots. Saved this more damage. "You know. I kind of think the patriots are going away and i don't know why but my head tells me that box are gonna win. And then he'd say we would have won that if we'd had twelve on our side it wouldn't have even been close because he they honestly felt like brady was kind of like the the the sunny didn't have even though he had multiple sons. You know what i mean. He was kind of like weird the a member of his family. They even lived. You talked about this book. When brady goes to tell him. I'm not gonna not coming back. He goes to his house but their houses are what like three minutes from each other. You know brick minutes and they clearly spent time off the field which bell check didn't do either them so i do think there was some two on one stuff with those guys against bell check and maybe that plays a part of it with the jimmy thing i'm the big the big takeaway from reading your book To me was just like man. I can't believe this lasted this long. There's just so many ways this should have not gone nineteen years then you think like brady is now in year twenty one. What your best guest though for her. What what age is that even like. If you told me he's gonna play fifty. If you told me that five years ago i would have been like your fucking on drugs. what are you talking about. There's no way somebody's doing that. And now i'm kinda like a fifty. I what do you think i think it's forty five i. I think he doesn't know. But i do think that it's forty five. I think one of the things i write about. Is that like you know. One of the costs of his greatness is just the you have to be selfish to be a great athlete. And he's a great athlete many times more than the greatest athletes in terms of his dedication. And how much you thinks about this. And he's talked about this publicly the in wears on his family the fact that he is always thinking about the stuff that there is no off-season that alex guerrero on vacation with the receivers. Come out to vacation in montana. When they're there to run routes he truly cannot live without this is he said the sickness in him that makes him wanna throw a spiral and you know his family has felt that and i do think that there is going to be. You know a critical point. And i think it's probably forty five. I mean you won the super bowl. The very first thing giselle said to him was you know nothing to prove right. And he's like. I'm going to change subjects right. Giselle is probably the one. That's been pushing him to quit at least for five years. Now yeah something like that. Certainly she must have thought if he wins in tampa. That'll be it note. Yup and now it just seems like he's he's that it really seems like an i. I've talked about this before. My pod like this through the weird similarities with him and tom cruise with some of that stuff where it really seems like. He feels like he's achieving like higher. Be that now. He wants to spread the wealth of these things. He's found to other people like he had that crazy stuff about what was it like I can't get a concussion. What was that whole thing about concussion maintenance so you don't get concussions and just things that are like honestly kinda crazy. Yeah when his book he you know he basically said. This book is the tools to not getting injured in football. And if you get injured it's your fault. I remember a hall of fame quarterback once he was like so. What if i did it concussion. It's my fault. So i mean he took a big hit last week in the rams game like a really big one where he kind of totally didn't say the guy hit him and he got crunched on both sides and went down and got up. And i'm like you know. I'm older than him. Obviously but rory th forty three forty four was. I just felt like physically. Your body starts to change. Starts a slowdown signaling. How many times is he going to get up from that. Yeah he's still forty four he can put all the shit and his body and he can eat almonds and drink carrot juice and whatever else is doing but at some point. You're forty four. And your vertebrae has taken you know. X. amount of whatever's in at some point. You're not getting up from that. But now i don't know what to believe So you think the patriots lose. I think the patriots are gonna win. I mean he's taking you think the patriots are gonna win on sunday. I mean that's what my heart says. My mind thinks that they're gonna lose. But you know. I just have a weird feeling. I don't know what. I also have the weird feeling i'm about to do million pictures schrager and everybody is going to put the chiefs and the bucks in a tease annabelle. Tom brady the pay. Plus the pats look bad last week and eight. Look the pats have been in this spot plenty of times over the last twenty plus years about check words like they're seven point underdog at home. I would just be careful. I would've as ever to be careful. I can't wait to watch Set good luck with the book. What are people saying. Are people being nice of boston. They're being pretty nice doing a lot of boston stuff. And i really on you know. Appreciate the sport out there. And i've appreciated your friendship and the fact you gave it an early reading. Gave me some good notes. "Hello it is wednesday. july fourteenth. Obviously an absolutely beautiful day. Peter schrager stops by chris. Ballard obviously great conversation with the gm of the coats. I ask some hard questions. I think you're gonna enjoy today. I can't thank you enough for allowing us to penetrate your ear holes. Let's get to big big day here on siriusxm channel to mad dog sports radio and youtube dot com forward slash. V pat mcafee. Show in about twenty seven minutes. Pierce schrager will be a weekly thing because he's really the only one producing some content. That is worth talking about every single week. His flying coach podcasts. Alongside sean mcvay on spotify has created great conversations with people. We don't normally hear from today's guests on that show. Joe judge the new york giants mcvay and joe did not have that great of a relationship so they didn't know how is going to go. All the reviews have been glowing at schmidt. You listen to the first fifteen minutes of it this morning. Your initial thoughts can also. I think people are some people not all people because obviously painting with a broad brush of air dumb thing to do in any situation but a lot of people are wondering shreds becoming a part of the every week rotation in shreds going to be a part of the new crew we hope so by the way joy schrager but these flying coach shows have been absolutely legit. I mean the shit that has been said the matthew stafford news with cow shayna ham him also being down in mexico at a different resort than mcveigh stafford. When that whole trade happen wasting his entire vacation watching film on stafford trying to get into the trade game for the niners only to find out he was told to guide. You can have a night off ten minutes later. Staffer gets traded to the other resort. Where he was at mcvay with. There's a lot of little gems dropping out of here for the new york giants. I think we all know their line is not great. It wasn't great last year can. Here's an alleged fight. That happened behind the scenes. I wonder if they cover that they have saquon. Still they have danny dimed. He's from the bella check camp. There's a lot of optimism. I think for giants fans for a number of reasons. They trade away odell. They had mcadoo since coughlin. It's been a little bit of a problem over there. What we are initial thoughts on joe. Judd's in what do you think we should ask. Schrager about with his flying coach. Mcvay joe judge situation like i said i only got about twenty twenty five minutes more than yeah but but it is interesting because most of the guys they've had on you can tell that mcvay and then go back and they do have that like Friendship connection because they're kind of busting each other's chops a little bit and they might get into that but you could tell. It was more about the football aspect. They obviously had a lot of respect for each other. But you saw the quote that was going around and get to that part yet but mcveigh came away from it thinking like okay. The giants are really going to compete this year. And i assume that's because joe judge at the very start the part i got through. He was talking about his experience. Coach and under belshazzar could coach under the first twenty minutes. Were very interesting. But i didn't get far enough to really know what else they got into at boston. Connor sitting next to tie schmidt at the toxic table over there. And you boys have been fantastic. This entire run in connor ny ni- connors gonna be with me. Connor and i are going to houston k. Cassie those go with us as well. Foxy can't make it because he has a massive obligation this weekend so connor and zito travel. We're leaving tomorrow night. friday. It has been confirmed. Aj hawkins students. Oh hammer down. Boys also being here for the entirety of the show. I will face. I mean i think for an hour hour and a half from houston. Conner will be with me as well but aj will be in studio connor as we hear. Tie schmidt talk about mcvay and judge jeff and then we put up on the screen. That is going around. And it's going around the giants blogs because this is sean mcvay. Who is an accomplished coach. Who knows what his next legacy is going to be. He came in as the wonder fee. Nom oh my god. This guy that younger than most of the players. He's coaching common dominating they build a roster up at super bowl and then they lose the super then they pay goff and they had to redo the entire thing they start fire and get rid of people trading people will he be able to rebuild this thing up. He's very aggressive. I love the way he speaks. I think he's incredibly entertaining. They're going to hand him the monday. Night football gig. Allegedly he can get that whenever he wants. Obviously but him saying that. I don't care what the record says. The giants are coming. They're gonna compete. They're going to be situationally aware. They're going to know how to play. Fundamentally sound in these guys are relentless in the way they're going to say sean. Mcvay on joe judge's new york giants that's from at big blue united. I like at big blue. United getting out there. Finding the quotes that are positive about their team cause far too often negatively kind of hogs publicity which we will get into in just a couple of seconds. There is massive massive story brewing out of washington with one of the name. The league's biggest names or whatever but that doesn't mean a thing. Sean doesn't know him right now. No he doesn't know. Sean enjoyed and took away a lot of positives from joe judge and i guess they dive in sabin and bill. His trees amazing and by the way getting a chance to play his special teams units. Always very focused always doubted. We should got an onside kick against them. Well now there was a surprise. Onside kick that. We recovered that then. The ref actually turned go the other way but the ball rolled around so much actually ended up down on the other thirty so it just looked like an actual kickoff. It was a surprise kick left. They were potentially ready for. I don't know it wasn't my best kick. It was not my best kick but we still got the ball in the rest kind of fucked over and he was celebrating on. Think even came on the field at one point while i was going on. What the fuck is this guy. His special teams were always very doubted. You know in everything in new england very dialed in. But all of these coaches that have seen the way. The patriots have worked in y. The patriots have worked. It seems like it hasn't been easy to transition into doing your own thing now. Is that because where you have watched people work and set a precedent in. There's quotes coming out now from caches marty. Who is back with the pittsburgh steelers. He's an outside linebacker out he plays. He's massive sports car guy. I think he's in. Nf he does game. I think he's you know things caches marsh. We know him strictly from the internet. Seeing him do his thing maneuver in there he has come out. You know and I mean he said that the new patriots situation is just a miserable miserable existence. And that's not a surprise. Everybody says the patriot. Way is away it is not. Hey we're not having a good time. We're just like this. Football is his business. he was onto bears. One cave. Tom score bert kreischer. Bert kreischer has been in russia. Filming a movie about is experience. what the russian mafia. I think there's been a lot of substitute bears in their alongside thompson. Gora who is obviously hilarious. It caches i guess was either guests on there or a co host and he was asked by tom who knows football..

"Your comeback influence or the year is logan pa. Yeah so logan. Paul as we all know got into a scandal a couple years back. He posted a youtube video in this forest. In japan that was known for It's called like suicide forest or something like that. Probably not a good idea to be filming or going into a suicide forest in general but he filmed a man who Had committed and kind of made a joke about it and it was really horrible and people totally on him rightfully so. But it's kind of the first truly cancelled influence. Yeah i think he. I think he was was the kick. Start to the cancel culture but recently i haven't watches videos as much. I know ben has been watching a lot. But i've been following him lightly and he seems like he's really changed his entire mentality and a super apologetic about what he did and learn from it and he's trying to shift its content towards sings that he finds more interesting and has totally educated himself. So happy for you paul. Glad you learned and that you took cancel culture and you learn from your mistakes. So i think i think he's on a good route right now.

Trump Wants American Economy Reopened by Easter

"This week in a press conference. President Trump said that was the day he was hoping that we could start to reopen the US economy which has been shut down in many parts of the country because of the corona virus pandemic. I said earlier today that I hope we can do this by Easter. I think that would be a great thing for a country and we're all working very hard to make that a reality Stacey. I remember when he made that announcement. There was a kind of widespread freaking out. Oh yeah possibly including by me but more importantly health experts politicians economists. A lot of people saying that's just way too soon that it's going to make things worse. We'll do real harm to people's health and lives probably wouldn't work anyways. A lot of people argued so we should not take that risk. Yes but of course. President trump is reacting to a risk to there is a risk of keeping the economy closed down that also does real harm to people's lives and livelihoods last week alone more than three million people filed for unemployment because of the economic shutdown. So what's the right answer? What is the right time to open the economy back up? And why is it so hard to figure out exactly? When the risk of the disease spreading would be low enough that we could safely start to open economy. Backup so to figure this out. I called up Alison Schrager economist. Who SPECIALIZES IN BRISK? She's the author of an economist. Walks into a brothel and unexpected places to understand risk and I asked her. Why is it so hard to figure out when businesses could responsibly reopen? Well it feels much more like uncertainty than risk uncertainty verses risk so allison says there is a big between these two things and this difference is the key to figuring out what the right thing to do is so first of all. Let's talk about. Risk Allison's is a risk would be something like trying out a new Sushi restaurant in your neighborhood. Wait that's that's a risk. I don't think I want to know the rest of well. Actually you can't do that right now but yeah he's a little bit of a risk to make sure the fishes fresh that the kitchen super clean the chefs know what they're doing and you know you don't necessarily know these things firsthand but as a customer you can always gather some useful data. Maybe a sign on the door that tells. You is past good health inspections and that certainly doesn't guarantee anything. But that gives you a good odds that this is going to be a safe place to eat and you'll probably enjoy the food. So that's and uncertainty. This would be eating food in country. You've never been to and you have no idea even what you're eating it's just completely unknowable. In the downsides field very scary the key difference between risk and uncertainty is information. If you have information you can take calculated risk because you have an idea of how risky something is if you have little or no information. Then you have no idea whether something is risky or not when certain teeth and possible way trade-offs than you can only assume the worst so you kind of having g the most risk averse posture possible. Unusually that's also the most extensive and costly Allison's is that is the case with covert nineteen. There is just so much we don't know. How exactly does it spread? How many cases are there in the? Us How deadly is it? Who's at risk? What activities are safe? What activities aren't safe after you're exposed exactly? How long do you need to isolate yourself? We don't have reliable data on this as Alison. There's so much uncertainty that we have to take maximum precautions of course taking maximum precautions comes with its own set of risks shutting down a city forcing businesses to close putting millions of people out of work. That's risky too. So what is the best way to deal with the situation like the One? We're in a situation of great uncertainty. I think certainly in the short term. You definitely want us you know. Go for maximum caution but the good thing is is uncertainty usually doesn't persist for long. Eventually we are going to get more. Data's sensors we ramp up testing. And we have more time to see how this plays out and then you can start weighing trade-offs and not go with that sort of maximum posture. All the time Allison says as we learn more about the situation. We're in regarding covert nineteen. We can start to take calculated risks. Make smart choices. That won't cost us more than they need to.

What weighs down GDP?

What weighs down GDP?

"Not for the first time I am on this program. We take our lead from our early rising colleagues on the marketplace morning report. The News News there. The News context here and this morning early with the markets bouncing back. After the agenda of yesterday it went like this well the problem is the market's been doing an awful lot better than the fundamentals. That's David David Kelly a morning report regular also the chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan funds talking to David Brancaccio. This morning say more. Though would you Mitch Kelly about those fundamentals. It's going to get a GDP number tomorrow over two percent. And why is that. Just two percent you know between the federal government of the Federal Reserve. Got All the stimulus being poured into the economy. And it's not actually helping economy grow that's tossed so we got tears in Clare on the phone. She's a professor of economics at George Washington University to break things down a little before us one of the big things that we were watching was the role of the tax cuts and jobs act. Also the Fed of course keeping interest rates low. So that means that we're looking at savers. Trying to find a place to put their money to earn some income and that pushes more more money towards the stock market which gets us to it does look like a stock market and the real economy are potentially out of line. Aw but there is more to the fundamentals than just GDP at the same time if we look at other figures such as what's been going on in the labor market there is that fifty year low unemployment. Of course things are still remarkably good particularly when we think about how long this expansion has lasted. Don't zone on eleven years now which helps explain why people are getting jittery. When unforeseen stuff happens that corona virus really being the the driver of of that tumble and that people are worried that that might affect the Chinese economy that was yesterday? The Corona virus in the markets today traders apparently decided the corona virus. Isn't that big a deal but look fundamentally this whole thing is all about confidence right. How much consumers? which as we've been telling you for years now are the single biggest driver of this economy? How much they think things are going to be okay so to that end a little compare and contrast now we learned today from the Commerce Department that orders for durable goods big expensive things postal last couple of years? We learned those orders were up in December so far so good but there is a certain line-item in that report that we pay attention to capital capital goods equipment that businesses by to produce more stuff orders for those dropped which is not a good look for business investment consumer confidence though how we all feel about the economy. We learned that today improved more than expected so the essay question goes like this. Why do you businesses seem to be skeptical about the economy while consumers think things are maybe not so bad? Marketplace's Kimberly Adams got the assignment. Consumers are feeling better about the economy because after a long recovery since the recession Josh Gibbons at the Economic Policy Institute says most people they have really beaten beaten down expectations in. So if you look over the past year unemployment's pretty low. Wages are doing not great but okay. Maybe they're like this is as good as it's been for a while but business investment has been slowing for months now and economists like to pay close attention to those numbers because weak business investment. Eventually the ripples through the rest of the economy in so if you're trying to predict whether or not say a recession is coming. Durable goods will sometimes sort of go down more quickly than other parts and be a better forecasting instrument because business investments in durable goods are a reflection of companies own forecasts. Alison Schrager is a senior. A fellow at the Manhattan institute she says businesses are looking at the economy. Five ten twenty years from now as opposed to consumers are really experiencing Very strong economy and their outlook is appreciably shorter also when businesses invest are also often now more more thinking about global markets not just domestic markets markets and with the trade war far from over and risks from climate change. The outlook for the global economy is a bit uncertain just now in in Washington. I'm Kimberly Adams for Marketplace

Warming Up Before Your Workout

"Sure all of you will have heard this before. You need to adequately warm-up before going the full throttle into any workout will that be weight training running any sort of sports and so on and more often than not this advice this falls on deaf is so why is it so important to ensure your warm up properly before you exercise. A warm up is a period of time prior to being doing physical activity which consists quite often of light cardiovascular exercises and quite often stretches as well and a woman activties serves two major purposes ready to enhance performance when we first gets help to also prevent injury now. What is really interesting to notice that Mike? With many topics in the health and fitness world there is contradictory advice out there. Because I'm sure many of you will have heard that you should did stretch before warming up as stretching spores exercise helps you to increase flexibility. It helps increase the ability of joint to move for. Its Fru range range of motion. But I'm here to say today that there might be some clues lifting evidence on stretching before we start doing size but before we talk about this contradictory trade balls dot that I should say. There are different forms of stretching. There's static stretches which of those where you're standing or sitting or you're lying still and you hold a single who position for a long period of time and these differ to dynamic stretches while you're performing genital repetitive. Movements perhaps like leg swing weh Edwin gradually increases the range of motion of movement but it always remains in the normal range of movement. Another example might be doing like chocolate cake Jorgen between each each one. But you're doing an open and close. The Gates Foil in an outer thighs are looked at up. If you're not sure I mean there but it has more movement involved rather than just being static taking sedentary as you'll doing the stretch so all of heard in the past is that regular stretching is thought to increase flexibility by making all muscles more supple and by retraining the nervous system to tolerate stretching further however according to the National Strength Conditioning Association a growing body of research has shown that pre-workout workout or pre event static stretching may actually have a negative effect on force production POW performance strengthen durance reaction time time and running speed in fact. Several studies said stretching before a workout or an advantage the race or a weightlifting competition. Whatever it may be has been shown to reduce performance went up to three percent? Dr Ian Schrager. A sports medicine clinician researcher and associate professor at the Department of Family. Medicine at Montreal's McGill University. Christie said that research now suggesting that stretching before exercise actually makes your muscles weaker and slower but it does help to increase. You'll range of the notion professor. Robert Herbert is a senior principal. Research Fellow Wave Neuroscience Research. Australia found that most of the evidence strongly suggest adjusted static. Stretching before exercise does not reduce the risk of injury and even a little bit quite negligible I mean study called a pragmatic randomized trial of stretching before and physical activity to prevent injury and soreness found what they called to be. A hint of an effect on reducing injuries like Ligament Tasr has muscle strains and sprains. So where does this leave. As if we've been told allies to do stretches and static stretching before exercising what shall we actually do. What free exercise warm up should we do? If there's a point in doing one at all so according to Dr Sharia your decision to stretch not distract should be based on what you want to achieve deep if the objective is to reduce injury stretching before exercise is not helpful. Your time better spent by warming of your muscles with the light. Aerobic Nick Movement. We talked about light cardiovascular movements getting some light joining in for example and gradually increased their intensity whilst of your objective is increase your range of motion so you can more easily do the splits. For example this is more beneficial doing stretches then doing a cardiovascular joke for example the purpose solve warming up has to prepare mentally and physically for your chosen activity so typical warm up should take at least ten minutes and involve the light Arabic movements we talked. What about with dynamic stretching that mimics the movements of the activity? You're about to four form unless as we said you're about to perform a split for example or something like the way you might want to consider static stretching you should then gradually increase the range of motion of these movements during the warm up to prepare the body for more intense versions of those movements that occurred during the sport itself so by doing this. This process will raise your heart rate. Increase the blood your muscles thereby warming your muscles up. And when he formed to muscles up less stiff they work more efficiently than has more blood flow. That's enabling your muscles two or more oxygen to reach your muscles and produce is energy and the woman also activates the nurse signals to muscles which can increase your reaction time so what is better recommended then. It's a combination Asian. Really if you're going to do a sport or weight training all a run. For example of dynamic stretching where into being cooperating some lights cardiovascular activity tippety as well as some more movement and Joe stretches raw than holding them in a static position so this episode might be very contrary to what you've heard before about stretching but I hope it has helped shed some light on pre-exercise war ups and what we should be doing What we should consider depending on what our objective

What Surfing Can Teach Us About Risk

"Big wave. Surfer. Big wave surfing, usually means riding waves bigger than about twenty feet high in Bryan has been surfing for a really long time right now. I am fifty eight years old, and I've been surfing fifty eight years. So my dad took me out when I was three months old, the summer after Brian finished high school. He was a lifeguard at a beach, when he saw a surfer wipe out on a massive wave. The surfer was struggling to stay afloat and Bryant tried to swim out towards the surfer to save him. But he just couldn't get close enough each wave get hitting them in hell holding on the water, and he kept popping up and screaming for help, and he survived full waves. And we kept screaming back and forth when the fifth wave came hit him. He's gone never found his body, but till is there, I still hear his voice, I sees face. I sees is, you know, so I it's kind of lost that you wish you coulda done something. But you couldn't you know at that time Brian never forgot that. And they never stopped thinking about ways to make surfing safer in years later, it was Brian himself who I take out on a massive sixty foot wave. He's arrived. He was fine. But he had a realization that day one that chair. Changed the sport of surfing forever. This is the indicator from planet money. I'm Carcione and I'm Stacey Smith the way that Brian changed. Surfing offers a surprising lesson for how all of us non surfers deal with risk. Alison Schrager, is an unexpected guide to the history of surfing. She isn't economists to studies risk view ever surfed. No. Allison writes about the history of big wave surfing in her new book and economists walks into a brothel and other unexpected places to understand risk to Allison, the history of surfing is about how technologies that are designed to make the world safer in less. Risky can have the unexpected result of sometimes making it more dangerous more risky in the early days of big wave surfing around the nineteen forties, and nineteen fifties surfers had to be really fantastic swimmers and Allison says that was because back, then if you lost your surfboard in wipeout, you had to keep yourself above water without it. And if they wiped out they might have to swim three or four miles in really rough surf to get back to shore. So back then it was very small very elite group of people at the superhuman swimming skills. But then surfers started using a leash which attach is their leg to the surfboard allowing them to keep that board even after a wipeout. Allison says the leash did make surfing safer, but it also made it more likely that weaker swimmers would take up surfing in the first. Place and those weaker swimmers might take risks. They didn't understand because they thought the leash made them safe. Brian k Lana says he sees this every time a new technology makes surfing, a little bit safer when people think they can try to serve without a lot of training to fulfill fantasy, but they get wacked reality. You know, the their fantasies all den and you know, just reached the stars. But, you know, all of a sudden, they're eating the reefs and the bottom of the ocean. But the really big innovation in big wave surfing came later. And it came from Brian himself in the late nineteen eighties and early nineteen ninety s Brian was surfing at a tournament called the Eddy prestigious event. We're only a couple dozen of the world's best surfers were competing. And that is when Brian wiped out on that huge sixty foot wave. And while he was in the water wave after wave kept crashing down on him and he was in what surfers called the impact zone. That is the area where the waves are breaking the waves the strongest and where it is the hardest to swim out, Bryant was starting to get nervous. But then he saw something that he didn't expect. So, you know, I looked up and one of my friends came up with a standup jetski cinnamon, and he zoomed right in and looked at me and asked me all right. And I was just amazed that someone came into the impact zone. His friend couldn't grab because jetski was too small. But Brian says that seeing his friend completely calmed him and he had an epiphany if the technology now existed to get someone into the impact zone then that same technology could be used to rescue someone and get them out. So Brian learned everything he could about the new models of wave runners, and jet skis, and he started buying them and trying to attach sleds to the back of them, turn them into rescue vehicles to pull drowning surfers out of the waves after enough trial and error it worked, the jetski changed the sport of big wave surfing. Eventually, it was just understood that rescue teams using jetskis would be nearby. Anytime surfers were riding big waves, and one day, Brian, and another lifeguard. Even. Used jetskis to rescue seven servers, who could not get back to shore. But technology for me is double edged sword because with all proper training or problem, mental attitudes. It also sends a false sense of safety. Also out in lineup also, too. So I also see people taking more of a risk because they see the use of the jet skis there as well as petition devices not only were weaker surfers now getting into big wave surfing, because of the jet ski but strong surfers raising jetskis to get to bigger and bigger waves like eighty foot tall waves, this is called Toan surfing or the surface actually pulled behind jetski to these humongous waves. In other words, these strong surfers were using the jet ski which was supposed to make surfing safer to take bigger and bigger risks. And in fact, this is what reminded communist Alison, Schrager of financial markets. Just like a jet ski can make it safer to ride a big wave their financial products that can make it safer to invest your money because they limit how much money you can lose. And just the same way jetski can be used to take on bigger and bigger waves. Those same financial products can also make it easier to take a bigger risk with your investments, so you can make a lot more money if the investment goes up, but that also means that you can lose a lot more money. If your investments go down fact, this is kind of what happened during the financial crisis. That's right. And so the question is, what can be done to make sure that people are taking the right amount of risk either surfing or in finance. Well, if you're a surfer, you educate other surfers, and you participate in something called the big wave risk-assessment group safety summit on the north shore of wa who that's right. Surfers have their own risk. Some ad is amazing and wonderful. I want to the big waves for risk summit. I mean normally idea risks. Summit is not appealing, but through surfing in there, just sounds interesting Alison had the same thought she actually attended recent summit, one of the founders was Brian kill Ana. An says she was like kind of the personnel there, there were three women there. Probably like maybe fifty people. Okay. So again, like a pension risk conference. No light slide with a lot of math on it. Mostly men. But they were way better looking in a much better shape than it a pension risk conference. Probably a better tans super tan. Not a closed. Toed shoe in the room at the summit, surfers, go basic safety and rescue techniques, things like CPR, and they also learn about how waves break and then color code different surfing zones. Based on safety and even discuss how to use drones to signal wear a fallen surfer is drowning to alert rescue team all kinds of things. Yeah. So education is one way to help people manage risks. Another way is government regulation, which is what's used in finance. For example, sometimes there are restrictions imposed by the government on what kinds of financial products you can invest in. Those restrictions are based on how much money you have or whether you understand the risks that you're taking or other variables nine surfing. There are some regulations about using jetskis to ride big waves in Hawaii, but also says that generally speaking surfers are opposed to regulation. Also, the whole idea of like tons of surfing regular. Just seems counter tips or the whole ethos. Yeah. Supposed to be like laid back and relaxed not filling out things in triplicate true, though, surfers do still have debates for example about whether surfing should require training certification like scuba diving does or more recently about who should be allowed to wear new, inflatable, vests to ride big waves. And Allison's main point, is that whether it is surfing or financial products. These debates are definitely getting continue because even when people learn how to manage the risk that comes with a new technology, either through education or regulation or just from getting used to risk. Another technology can come along that introduces new risks that is surfing. It's also, by the way, the whole history of finance, a new financial product is introduced people take more risks. Sometimes there's even a crash or a wipeout. Yeah. And then new regulations are imposed until the next new financial product and the cycle starts over. Social media, elections and fake news: India edition

"This marketplace podcast is brought to you by portfolio books publisher of an economists walks into a brothel by Alison Schrager, a legal brothel isn't where you'd expect to find an economist. But Allison traeger isn't your typical communist in her new book Schrager interviews, some of the world's most interesting risk-takers from sex workers to big wave surfers to bring real world applications to risk assessment. After all wall streeters aren't the only ones taking risks every day and economists walks into a brothel is available wherever books are sold. Social media elections and bake news. The India edition from American public media. This is marketplace tech. I'm Tracey Samuelson in for me. What? India holds national elections next week. And as we get ready to head to the polls, they're being targeted with false and misleading information. The platform of choice is what's up the messaging service owned by Facebook? That allows users to send encrypted messages to other individuals groups of people or forward messages they've received according to a survey by Microsoft, sixty four percent of all Indian say they've encountered fake news. So the role of what's app in the election is the subject of this week's quality assurance where we take a closer. Look at a story that's been in the news Kinjo Petiot ag- has been following this story for our partner at the BBC. She talked to us about how you BIC witness WhatsApp is in India v have out a friend of rinse groups on what Fabu have a colleague group on bought fab it few everything and also largely due share news and information if Bill and a lot of that does end up to be fake can communicate ample of an incidence of fake. News spreading over what's up. Give Feek news it on polishing what they've said how the left about things. And how the cried about things how they laughed about things. I'll give you an example, a recent examples you knew in India Pakistan tensions were high recently after the attack in Alabama. You know, one politicians pitcher was a writer in India. And it was shown that visiting the the last writer for soldier and over there. He's laughing, and you know, it was literally a doctor image. It was basically being spread to show that look this politician from this particular party was laughing about this. So this is really right or do you really think we should vote for him or the party? What does Facebook and what's up doing to try and stop the spread of fake news? Yes. So recently Facebook as actually pulled out a lot of political thing that either the these are the groups and accounts that are involved in inappropriate behavior. Now, it's not very clear what the mean by that. So they've blocked those accounts they have block. Accounts. And what tap has. Also started a helpline to verify fake news with lever in Indians or using WhatsApp can share pitchers we'd use of it what fab and ask whether vivere authentic. Yeah. And messages on what's app are encrypted which actually makes this harder for governments and the company to trace or crackdown on yet. Absolutely. But if all so the unique selling proposition for what's up for consumer. What if use of because you know, you those really want privacy to their conversations that people to their to their called and to kind of message that they exchanging if what type does agree to remove encryption that basically means that they are compromising on, you know, the the kind of privacy they are giving to it few. And then use those might not be happy with what? So this is. This is really going to be sticky point the gunman. Indian government has been pressurising what's up to to to make information more. Accessible to the gunmen to see who's Hussein what? And who's doing what on WhatsApp, but I don't think going to be that easy for what fab to agree to that. And for the for the government to get to do that. Because they've they will be both of them will be criticized. Do you think that the spread of fake news on what's app could actually influence the Indian election over cannot on that for sure, but we have already seen in the last year how the kind of information that is shared on what the have influence on people social behavior lynching of people on the streets of after the spread of rumors of child kidnapper have have led to people being killed? So that if that is a good indicator that information that is shared and shared widely on what fab can change people's behavior and people stinking Kinjo penny walk with the BBC that tip line. Cantrell mentioned. It might not be the real time feedback tool. It initially appeared to be BuzzFeed reported this week that it wasn't getting timely responses to the. Techs and links it submitted to test the hotline in response proto an Indian startup that's partnered with WhatsApp on the service clarified. It's actually a research project, it'll mostly gather data and won't be able to respond to every submission. It receives it shouldn't be relied upon to combat political. Rumors in the run-up to India's election. And now for some related links before India, there was Brazil, the Washington Post. Chronicle spread of fake news on what's app in Brazil's presidential elections. This fall, we've got linked to that coverage on our website and last month Facebook, founder, Mark Zuckerberg came out with a long piece about the future of social media. He thinks it'll revolve around private interactions similar to what's up a digital living room to complement Facebook's digital public square. And if he's right he said, the switch to private communications will make it even harder for companies to spot and stop fake news. I'm Tracey Samuelson. And that's marketplace tech. This is APN.

What Sex Work Reveals About Risk

"Alison Schrager, it's be here. You have just written a book very exciting here. It is in communist walks into a brothel and other unexpected places to understand risk. So which brothel did you go to I went to four actually, but all legals, while only graph all legal brothels, and what did you learn about risk from sex workers, and and legal brothels? Well, so what I learned is when I first went to the brothel, I was surprised to find out that the legal prices were much higher than the illegal prices. Oh, so if you hire a sex worker legally, you end up paying more than if you hire sex worker illegally. Yes. You pay like three hundred percent more a huge markup at first surprise me. Because you would think I think about it like illegal drugs, you just they're really hard to find. Yeah. Oh, you tend to you have to pay drug dealers premium to get the drugs from them and for the for the risk. They're taking. Non in having all the drugs. Exactly. So I was surprised that the legal sex workers could charge a lot more. And it turns out you said it is the risk. It is the fact that it is effectively what we call in a risk-free transaction mean, you don't have to worry that you're gonna get caught by the police, you can you are complete discretion. You don't worry about the woman might blowback. We'll mail you mug, you whatever it's it's risk free. For everyone involved

"Because I did mention this last hour, and I think it's an important story. And it's the fact that we are looking at a potential nuclear conflagration taking place in Asia and has nothing to do with North Korea and South Korea or the United States or any of that you've got you've got two very powerful countries in India and Pakistan having a fight over Kashmir. Pakistan now announcing that it had down Indian warplanes and captured a an Indian pilot. Both countries have ordered airstrikes over the last two days. The first time in history, the two nuclear-armed powers have done. So to each other. Pakistan, shot down to Indian warplanes Wednesday in the disputed region of Kashmir captured a pilot its military said raising tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals to a level unseen in twenty years. The dramatic escalation came hours after Pakistan said mortar shells fired by Indian troops across the frontier. Dividing the two sectors of Kashmir killed six civilians and wounded several others earlier Tuesday Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since the war broke out in nineteen seventy-one. Both countries have ordered airstrikes over the last two days. The first time in history to nuclear armed powers have done. So the Indian air force shut Kashmir's main airport Schrager, along with at least three others in neighboring states because of the incidents an Indian official said Pakistan also closed its airspace. In a televised speech, the Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan sought to defuse the situation. He said I asked India with the weapons you have and the weapons we have can we afford a miscalculation. "Jets have an awful offensive line and teddy Bridgewater is absolutely viable on an open market. You can get stuff for teddy Bridgewater to me. He's a starter for about eight teams in this league. So you're the jets shrinks and you got darnold the schedule's pretty workable early. Some winnable games DEA play teddy. Win a couple show him off and trade him. You know, this is what the eagles did. Bradford got picks moved up. What are they going to do in New York with Bridgewater and darnold both. I think good enough to play Bridgewater though. I think pri- better today and certainly tradeable. Well, Colin, I'm pretty connected with those jets guys and they also same thing what an embarrassment of riches because it's not just Bridgewater who looks good and it's not just Josh mccown viable starter in the NFL. Also they have three guys. I would be surprised if they traded teddy Bridgewater. Here's the reason why he's twenty five years old. He's taken a team to the playoffs and he's been the ultimate
