We can make those pages we can jump up for certain keywords but largely or of the post. they're gonna look massive for us. They've already been written like as neier huge key out there that we haven't covered hanging free any more. But like it's probably okay to delete some of them now and so also like those kind of pieces again like referring to the whales animals tokes of alec they can dip and it looks like you're having a terrible month. Everything's gone wrong. But it's just like one outdated piece of content making your analytics look bad and we had a few months ago like we. We have some dips in the such rankings and what was interesting was like the such rankings. Dip the traffic dip the clicks from buffet from lock to the marketing site. They dipped but sign up state fairly consistent. Like sunday's some weeks. They were even up and i can see the traffic going down but like being able to see like the business isn't being impacted to heavily by. This was really nice. And i think yeah like sometimes you can get to wrap up in traffic and maybe nice gotta look at something a bit more important sometimes. Absolutely one of the big piff anies. I felt like i had a few years ago. Was was blog published on ten. Most weeks. And i look at the state of the blog front page. I think i'm proud of this is a good representation about brand. You wanna find this. They're getting the best of animals. But then you look at your analytics and you realize that eighty percent of your traffic is actually because of organic such going to stop. There was written years ago. And there's actually a lot positive correlation. In most cases the old of the post the more traffic goes to it as soon as you realized that you suddenly thing. Oh god i have to after Optimize everything everything up to date. Because they're coming in on company ideas all that talks about outdated features. Yeah just a hello realization to have when we're so focused on the creation aspect of content. Lots of times. I think it's yeah once you reach a certain point where you've been publishing for years. I think like paying attention to what's already there is k. Like i think honestly like i look at buffer if we weren't expanding broadening Positioning to the more small business. The opportunities for us to grow in search like i think a new keywords like they are every few months when a new feature launches like we can bri- about that and that would eventually be a such time a yeah. I think like the bigger opportunities for most sites that have been around for a number of years is the stuff that's already there. Yeah it's very nice segue because that's something animals we are thinking about trying to build processes for that. We're doing a love. Auditing that kind of thing. Because yeah i think we've reached a point in content marketing works mature enough that looks the companies have great content creation processes and they just haven't applied that same thinking to optimization and looking old content and identifying those white house i guess a pragmatic question for you actually even eight hundred or so posts. How'd you keep on top of that. What you look at every day every week to know what's working what isn't too wet. Cat weighs should be focusing. Yes have a mixed panel. And that's kind of my source of truth for like company impacts and how is a content like moving some of the key metrics for buffa but then to just like analytics. Now jump in probably every day every day just to like check like a little health. Check like he's anything broker and the week. We made some updates told blog and we accidentally caught out the analytics and locked in and was like that doesn't look good like we had no visits and just to keep on top of it from that perspective but then every month trying to do like a bit of a deep dive and look into which pages again traffic how that stepped over the last month for how it's grown over the last month and then use such comes just to like dig into those results so if we're seeing growth. Is that growth coming from if a prices dipped one key dipping. And yeah that's kind of the stuff i care about. Most we had a good experience animals as well which will stat realization upon us. Yeah exactly that yeah now my mocking report last month i was like hey good news. Everyone doubled well talking about competing. And competitiveness shes Let's talk a bit about your side project to call it that. Yes some people that don't know what is living cozy yes It's essentially just a directory for like modern brands. You herman furniture bronze kind of trying to build into like a a space to discover the best brands and products to shower with dennis. The elevator pitch. And what made you want to do that. So yeah a couple of things like i. We produced series called breaking brand a couple of years ago and that folded like a direct consumer brands cooled pattern and they were focused on like goods and dot series unlike which spend a few moments like really studying consumer buffa and that opened my eyes to like these amazing interesting brands out there. Then i think the real catalyst was. I moved house and every piece of furniture. I needed i cup. Such google and i would discover places like ikea and although i know you already wayfair dominated every such away fire everywhere. These days like amazing for their seo team. But just like really annoyed. Me and yeah. I kind of just wanted to stay. Because i knew their release coupons out the i thought that was opportunities to help them be discovered and the thing was just. I hadn't started a side project for wile like. I hadn't grown aside from zero for a number of years like probably since before joining buffer so it was also. Yeah i think just like a a bit of a test like can. I actually do this. Shop in the tools in triangles. Something from zero again. Imagine does it feel a little different doing today to with on the pre buffet days. I've done a few similar. Things and traffic doesn't come quite as readily as it wants did for my newfound experience. Yeah it definitely feels like more of us. Look like there's a lot more yet trusting the process i think and like doing what you think of the right things and hyping in six months time. It's going to stop paying off. And i think the strategy fa me was hank finding the super low hanging fruit so carmen schrafft's looking for all of the things with a zero kiewit difficulties and getting excited about something. Like two hundred such as per month and like catering for those and then like the strategy that i picked up on after a couple of months was essentially trying to tackle what i was calling fro- away content from bigger publishes the home. Where niche is likes massive like this so many competitors in that space but you often see sites like apartment therapy oil strategist or if those ones like hong kong is a big one. They rank but they kind of rank because of their forty like not because of the content and quite often. What you'll find is like i've found is. It's possible to outrank them. With like pieces. The written specifically to rank for those keywords so like one of my favourite early successes was like surfer in a box brands. Like those companies. Like floyd like they now ship. Sofas inboxes so you'd have to have wrestled them around kunas and upstairs and that was like maybe thousand such as a month for it but the continent was ranking was just kinda like super basic like his a list of surfers and one hundred words about each one and i think by like really focusing on ranking police key words i was able to take a lot of those pieces and at the moment like still fluctuates. Like i've noticed the bike results pages home seemed to just be all over the place like i'll jump up and down so much every day but yet i post now ranks having the strategist cnn. We're above for awhile. I think we might still be nice. And that's been really cool. And i like my one of my other approaches is something. I've kind of cool like layering content. So essentially is getting fuss dropped out there and then adding to it so one example is a piece. I about sectional sofa. So that's like a huge huge Michael the different variations of it probably get like two hundred thousand such as a month and honesty like didn't expect to rank for it said i was talking best sexual sofas and start out by just kind of putting out a short introduction like listing twelve brands then put the out the just to have it you know so you can get like page four in the suburbs and then like this is kind of a process of done with most of my content in the last six months is put that v. one out there and then i will add another layer which will be get experts alike speak to interior designers and say like can you give me perspectives on these brands then at thursday and then like now as of got relationships with a couple of the brands i can speak the fbi people and say like can you just give a snippet about this like what makes it special dental at the end then put like a bunch of faq's at the on like how to care for it how to build it like houses styling and you'll room and like yes six months ago if you'd asked me to write four and a half thousand words about sexual safer like i would never have done it by putting out like a thousand piece and then just every few weeks going back and adding a few hundred air and they're like it's become this like real great detail diet but yeah i would never have done that from zero to four thousand bullets super smart because i used to do the exact opposite of that the really silly thing which was on my side projects this is the key word. I'm gonna do six thousand words. Sit down. I'm going to run out not leave this desk. Lewis done and i hated every second of it and the content was terrible as a result. Where's this way you break it out. You'll motivated by seeing those early results. That make you. Yeah maybe this is. What a bit more effort in. And then you get better results. You can justify adding a bit more in that super small. Yeah it's really helpful. And it's encouraging 'cause i think like when i started the site from zero i think i read something on which it was. It was like analytics new blocks and it was like just get worried. Don't worry about like cliques. It doesn't really matter. And that's kind of what i've been looking for this kind of dislike step by step process of like okay. Publish a piece than after like a few weeks so mum like how many keywords is it ranking for like. i don't really care web but like if it's ranking that's cool and then he's like h press for that and that's kind of like the first test like once he's ranking for like twenty words that's great then gates like such console and the next step. Is anyone actually clicking on this. Or how many impressions am i getting. So it's like if key words then it's like how many impressions getting then like another month down the line. I'll start thinking about people clicking on and then another month fatigue on the line it's like driving any revenue from this post. And i think we've concern styling side projects. It's easy to stop focusing on that end point whereas like that's really demotivating. Just really sucks. Because it's gonna make any money like you're going to get conversions from post for months and i think by like having steps and celebrations along the way it's keeps it interesting and if feels like progress it's kind of fun because like its a side project like i'm doing this outside of work. It needs to be interesting. It needs to be fond like it shouldn't feel like a slope and i think that's why is important yelich find processes that make it interesting and not feel like work. Yeah i found that low recently. I'm in the middle of trying to drop my second book. So i love writing my contracts and i had a bit existential crisis a few years ago if i died tomorrow without writing a book done something terribly terribly wrong and the thing is when you sit down she book is that you know sixty thousand words and it has to make sense and it has to be interesting. Oh god that's hard. That's like a logistical challenge. So yeah trying to do exactly as you say celebrate tiny little milestones on the way like bill two hundred. Three hundred watt snippets here and that just so the bulk. Enormity of what's facing you. I guess related to that. Like how you've bounce it with work. How'd you mesh these two things together because Something i've always found grady halt to do. Yeah it's definitely like a challenge. And i think it it like the amount of luck and like will go up and down with my energy. I think the thing this employment we've side projects is. Yeah like to keep it on. Like i try not to put pressure on myself like i think at the start of the year so i had like a a week or two off around christmas and new year and i was just like. I'm going to set myself okay. Ause for the side projects and it just made me like miserable is just like this is reporting like this. Why am i doing this time. And i kinda try not to have expectations focus on trying to grow it but if it doesn't grow this month like it doesn't really matter and then i think contingent like splitting time. I try and find like either. Just before i start work or just after. I'll try and get like an hour in. Then we switched a four day workweeks of buffa last year which has been amazing for cyprus. Like a now. Have fridays working on and that really helps. It frees up a bit more evening and weekend time. And i think as well like the fingers side projects is try to like. Take it seriously like this to grow to be like a big site that can maybe one day like pays my full time employment. Who knows but like. I don't want to sacrifice like seeing people going for dinner like watching sport like it's like a two thousand twenty s. Probably the worst thing that's happened for my side project in the last like year. 'cause has just football love that and i mean i've always thought was side projects as well. They've always beneficial to your your your fulltime hustle as well because you learn new skills. You're applying it developing empathy by building. Something itself was not a particularly exciting reason to do it. You wanna do it because it's fun having a good time but i think rewarding people with their time and had space to do that is go. Be good for everyone. Yeah definitely like it it so much with day-to-day working like even just you know the challenge of gained back links. Like i haven't had to worry about that for a long time. Like has so many back links in such a strong domain profile. The yeah i don't worry about it day today but then you know taking the site from zero is just like to get battling so not like challenges. You're having to think about things in unique ways challenges you to like do stuff. He don't do today. And i think we'll just like provides you have more empathy for for other sides and other people and yeah. There's just definitely break for his. That helped me with in work and know just like a confidence thing like it's cool to know. I can build sites without buffalo. Like i five and a half years like there's definitely times we start to question like am i doing well because of buffer or is like buffett doing well partly because of me like it's it's very hard to detach yourself from the company for a while after a while so i think that really helps to sort of a tweet from pep from see excel. I think a few weeks ago it was effective. If you want to hire really great. Mock says don't hire them from huge while known brand because mocking is actually easier. It really helped me to get this break for. Have like back links from like fifteen or twenty. Like big name biggish name brands. Now say that really hopes and then the other thing was just like i opened every single helper. Email for about six months so a lot to say. Yeah like that was kind of my like my routine. Our emails see if any to reply to china at kind of set a goal of like one or two per day and then realized i was just being one of those people that responding to post in its request. It was that it's okay to create content just for links even if people will never buy from it even if they will never never drive traffic especially when you company links is kind of the most important thing you need to stop contesting those keywords. When i was a freelancer i wanted to partner with some marketing agency and want to get on their radar because they make great customers. So i did a really indulgent recap of the top fifty marketing agency blogs in the uk. And my own criteria was fifty agencies. That i wanted to work with. I sent them all a badge. Badged embedded on their websites like Them got a bunch of links from an a bunch of business and never really seen read by anyone outside of that but for the purposes of link building. It was great. Do you have to share content to an individual goal. Times link building is different. The traffic and sales yeah definitely like senate buffer like other the same animals but like all annual reports like the state of remote work like that gets thousands of back links every single year and yeah. I would like to try and do something like that. I think on the side project as well and just like. I have a list of ideas like in just going through google trends and trying to find like the most popular sofa color in every single state in the us and just publishing and trying to get a few back kings for it via having is an important thing of like. It's okay to write something just for a link like in my process of building links would be kind of interviewing a founder spending an awful in writing up the article and just hoping thing they would put it on that page when published it and is a slow but it it works. It's still a good hour. why i imagine. Get a good one solid link. I'd be happy with that. Yeah i think like your links from like those kind of brands. I think especially important just because they are super relevant links like it's not just a random on a random look like it's a ohio.
