"Formerly known as Annie currently known as diamond, creek balm, and today there will be no we Nick my beloved co host in front is currently in Portland with his most precious gift this year, his son, who was born a little over a week ago on November 29th. His name is Rafael Steven axelrod welk, and he came 9 weeks early, so while he's in the best hands, he's getting some skin to skin snuggle time. I saw on Instagram and he's going to stay in the hospital for a few weeks while he gets a little bit bigger. So Nick has things other than podcasting to focus on right now, so it just me, but don't touch that dial because Nick will be joining us later in the episode for our pre recorded segments with our guest. Multiple noted Friends of the pod in cultural savants, Chris black, who is here as a representative of the bougie, straight boy community, and our guiding light, both on and off the peloton, Cody rigsby. But first, I'm going to talk about one thing that I want to give or receive. And that is aspirational hair accessories. These are great because nobody can have too many. You can get them in a range of price points, and you don't have to worry about size. And if you're not sure what kind to get the person that you would like to gift, look at their Instagram, see how they wear their hair and go from there. I discovered the world of expensive aspirational hair accessories through a really old school pharmacy here in New York called zider. You can get the brand I'm about to suggest there. It's in the Gabriel side. You could spend hours going through all their little rhinestones and silk and wool and insane hair accessories, some are not really my style. I prefer the class look. Anyway, but the brand I love, and you can chop them online, they have an incredible selection is called France Luxe.

"All right, let's get to some other headlines from the week's news and give you some context on why they matter. First up late on Tuesday, this happened. Pfizer's mini dose of COVID vaccine for kids 5 to 11 years old got a thumbs up from a CDC advisory panel and the first shots could be given out within hours. Here's what you need to know. On Tuesday, the CDC officially recommended that kids aged 5 to 11 years old get Pfizer's COVID vaccine. So now, kids under 12 can finally get vast. Though, that doesn't mean kids can just show up at any old vaccine site tomorrow. The children's COVID vaccine only contains one third of the dose adults got, meaning Pfizer had to make the kids version separately, and they're still distributing it around the country. But the shots should be available within a matter of days everywhere from children's hospitals, schools, pharmacies, and pediatricians offices. And finally, if you're doing the holiday math and want your kids to be considered fully vexed by Christmas, try to get their first dose in before November 19th. Our next headline involves something else you might want to sort out before the holidays. Today, President Biden announced that a lot of private employers have until January 4th to get their employees backed. Let's get specific. Starting early in the new year, companies with more than 100 employees will have to make sure all those employees have had two doses of Moderna or Pfizer, or the one shot J&J vaccine. It's that, or having their employees undergo and potentially pay for their own weekly testing. Companies that don't comply could face fines of up to almost $14,000 per violation. But enforcement on this one could be tricky. That responsibility falls to the Department of Labor's occupational safety and health administration, or osha. State level osha's monitor companies and about half of U.S. states, living in understaffed federal osha to take care of the rest. And osha's gonna likely need to rely on complaints to investigate. Plus, limited spot checks. So how well the government's actually going to be able to enforce this vaccine mandate is still TBD. And our final headline this week is about Facebook. Sorry, meta. The company says it will no longer recognize us automatically in photos or videos and will delete more than 1 billion stored facial recognition templates. Here's what's happening. Remember last time you uploaded a picture of you and your friends to Facebook and it suggested who to tag? Facebook can do that because it's had its own facial recognition tools for a decade. Privacy advocates have long criticized Facebook for its facial recognition projects. And even the government had expressed concern. Well, this week, Facebook heard the music and said, we're getting out of the facial recognition game.

And we'll talk a little more about that shortly. This many different factors to consider and clearly what finney est did is not something i can imagine myself doing and yet at that moment and under that circumstances exactly would god felt needed to happen and so we're seeing god acting in a very difficult situation taking emergency action. All of these things are playing together here. Think about the challenge that god faces as a teacher right now. I'm teaching a class. School pharmacy and the class has thirteen. Seventy adventist. twenty roman catholics ten middle eastern orthodox nine muslims to seeks and an assertion of protestants and evangelicals. In a sense. You do that every time you write a book or give an online lecture or something like that but to have it live was just fascinating that trying to provide something that meets each of those minds. What may meet one mind may offend another and so forth is a delicate balance considered gods classroom first of all in any action he has to consider. How will israel react to this action of mine or to this. Instruction of my. How will they respond a second consideration. What will the nation stink in deuteronomy the other nations. What will they think god if you do that. What will the nation's think of you and then there's the question what will the readers sank and not just us but all down through the ages between then and now what will these readers see in the story and then what will the universe thanks. How is the universe looking at this developing story and how will they respond and then finally of course what would satan things. And how would that impact how he moves across and i wanted to share with statement. I think many are familiar with. "By side with them to see how that serves industry can make a difference in people's lives but also was really really interested in healthcare and i had an uncle that owned the pharmacy and got the hang out there and It was amazing to see the relationship between the farmer system. The patient and back in those days you know probably still to some extent patience. Look at that pharmacist. As just a you know maybe as a substitute as their dock or a proxy for dock. And it's really drew to me. And so i went into healthcare. I want to the university of pittsburgh school pharmacy out my native fisk. Furger my whole life and really. That's kinda withdrew me into pharmaceutical industry. It's so true and you heard a lot today that the pharmacists really acts as that key individual in the patient's life to help them coordinate some their healthcare needs makes a lot sense. And so you know wants interesting as at that I think cope reenergize the spotlight on pharmacy. You think about during the lockdown while procedures elective procedures hospitals. A lot of that was shut down drugs and the importance of taking drugs and even encouraged to make sure you have on hand in case you up the quarantine really put the pharmacy back in the spotlight. And then you add the vaccines on that. And i think you really start to gain an appreciation back again for that pharmacist. So you know really excited about that as well and would you say that's kind of the main driver of what excites you with your work today. Is that the primary goal of kind of certainly my earlier work. I work as a pharmacist on the south side of pittsburgh and it was one of those neighborhoods where you really did people really did seek you out and so that ability to help people one on one in that kind of community was really enriching to me. But but i d today is really just helped a whole lot more people at the population level. Right if you think about the type of drugs that we have today a transformative nature of what our pipeline is going to be curious in. How do you make sure that people can afford them. People have access to them not only just patients providers as well and so i get the kind of help but i get the help on a much prior scale to make sure that our blocks of membership have access to these therapies and really just make sure that the services we provide are always value. Add and you know we kind of have the backs of our members.

Don't work unless you take them. And second. the more complex a medication regimen becomes the more difficult and costly. It is for patients to take medications in an optimal manner. And i believe this has become very significant challenge as people live longer with multiple chronic diseases each of which requires one or two or three and sometimes more medications resulting at a patient often taking eight ten. You might not remember her name. But you certainly remember the woman who was standing near her who was shot but lived former Arizona Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords. She survived but has, of course never been the same. When I got the news, the media organization I was working for sent me to Tucson. Like so many of the people here, a K T a. R had been The fact that such an evil act took place. Six Dead 13 others severely injured. It's still terrible to think about, and every single human being who died or was injured that day deserves to be remembered. Finally, but honestly. 10 years later with an eight year old at home, I still think most about Christina Taylor Green, this whip smart young lady had already found herself interested in politics, a lifelong interest of mine. Maybe the best way to honor Christina Taylor. Greene's memory is for us to be better politically, where we are right now politically is pretty crappy. And maybe one of the reasons we are where we are now is because we didn't learn a tough lesson even back then. Because politics reared its ugly head right after Christina Taylor Green and everybody else was gunned down in that Safeway parking lot 10 years later, it's easy to look back in a Pollyannish kind of way and tell ourselves that we all simply linked arms about our heads and honored those who were killed and injured. That's not what happened. Yeah, many of us did. Most of us did. And most of us yes, wondered why this happened, but others were consumed with whether this happened because of politics and political speech. Yes, as one would expect. The issue of gun control came up, which is in and of itself a political Ah potato, But some people who had already gone horse, insisting that there were too many guns in our society found a new voice. When they asked if the gun that Jared Law for actually legally possessed had been fired by him, because if he did political rhetoric, no politics is not what caused Jared loftier to shoot and kill Christina Taylor Green. It's also not why he shot Gabby Giffords, but That still didn't stop politicians from blaming former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, whose political action Committee put a target on Gaby Gabby Giffords congressional district in an email. It was a fundraising email, and they were targeting that district to raise funds, not shoot people. Course that's what they were talking about, and that's what political parties do. They try to flip congressional districts to try to get people to vote for them. Even though we continue to learn that Jared Lochner was a mentally disturbed man with no particular reversion to right wing politics. Politicians continue to sound the alarm that right wingers drove him to shoot these innocent people outside of a safe way. Itwas dangerous political rhetoric that drove people to invade the capital. The United States Capitol a couple of days ago. In order to honor Christina Taylor Greene's memory. I think we need to learn the difference and don't let ourselves be led astray by politicians ever again. Whether they actually do drive the evil things that people do or whether they don't To our news time is 7 49.

Always good to talk to you Are your first responders having trouble finding hospitals with enough rooms to take patients and have any patients been turned away from hospitals Have you been at forced to reroute? You know, we we have, um so it is a diversion. What you just described occurs seasonally anyway. But of course with these last two years have been crazy. So our folks are really great about making contact with those emergency rooms well before they actually do the transport, So if they have to divert, they have good information about ability for those receiving facilities to take the patient. And then, of course, they stay with them the entirety of their trip, so they're never just cast off. But, yeah, it's getting really tough. If you just look at the numbers, the hospitals are really getting overrun. And you mentioned that that this happened seasonally. That happens sometimes because of the flu. Right? It does. Plus, you know, we have our winner visitors that come back. So census is up and our partners in the transportation world have only so many assets, and so everybody just gets full doing the work that they do and the halls get full. We have many examples of patients waiting in hallways who are very, very sick. And, um, I fear that that's probably going to get a little worse here in the next few days given Given the way the numbers are going, chief, How is the pandemic affecting your department? Do you have a lot of people calling in sick Because they have cove. It Well, we do. Yes, we've had well over 70 positive. Excuse me, 70 positive cases. They have really created a seamless process for us to get through and get vaccinated. Um, I myself had my second dose yesterday. There's no reason that I should have been in the front of the line to begin with, But I really felt it was important for every everybody on the department here to see that this is a really important thing to do.
