Fresh update on "scholz" discussed on Monocle 24: The Briefing
"Fe. What can we look forward to high. We'll be talking about the close relationship of the pd with the brazilian left. Plus the end of the soap opera physical soundtrack. All that right here on the briefing with me. Daniel beach after narrowly. Winning sunday's national election germany's social democrats. Say they hope to talk to the greens and the free democrats later this week about forming a three government the greens and the liberal ftp. Who have little in common on many issues say they will first attempt to seek areas of compromise before starting negotiations with the bigger parties. Let's get the latest now with quentin peel from chatham house. The think tank here in london also a former f. t. berlin correspondent quentin good afternoon. So you thanks for coming in What do you make of the announcement that these negotiations will be taking place before There are conversations with The bigger parties forming a government. Well i think that Actually the most logical thing is for the greens and the free democrats the liberals to to get together and then go to the social democrats and say okay. We could live together now. Let's all talk about it. I'm not quite sure how. It's to work but i do think it's increasingly obvious that will likely to get what's called a traffic light. Coalition of the red social democrats the greens and the liberals whose color is yellow And i think that would be interesting. And it's the logic of the elections. The christian democrats will go into opposition with their tails between their legs. And i think lash at that candidate for chancellor probably resign. That is a as a bold prediction. We heard the the clip off the top there obviously From olaf scholz saying this is all possible for christmas. He's very much playing himself As the leader as the role of chancellor now is is this for sure that we'll see this coalition. Nothing's quite new show Something like eighty percent german. Say they want to love schultz's the next chancellor they clearly see him as the natural successor to angela merkel rather than the man she wanted me so i think from that point of view. He's probably right. I must say it's quite funny to hear him. Say we're gonna do this very quickly. We'll have a government by christmas. Hey that's three months away but that would be very german. Well what do you make of these negotiations between the smaller parties. We began by talking about their quite far apart. So where can i find. Some common ground will that both social liberals social not economic mineral so on economics. The free democrats are really pretty conservative. Therefore very strict budget control and they don't want to see taxes go up particularly on the the welfare and the the business sector whereas the greens want to finance a very tough anti climate change program and so they're looking for higher taxes. That's the most difficult area. But i think on foreign policy. Let's be clear. All these three parties of very pro-european very pro european integration. Very much in favor of the franco. German relationship so in that area too. I think the difference is probably less difficult You mentioned the idea of arming lash going into opposition as the leader there. What is the next move for him. Obviously he's probably not counting himself out at this point. So how do they go forward. And is the next step for the christian democrats. I think lashes fighting for his political life that The reason why saying i too could be chancellor. Is that actually. We ain't going to be chancellor. I think he's out of a job or else. He goes back to north rhine-westphalia where after all he is the the prime minister there but It's tough one. I mean e- undoubtedly. He had a bad election campaign and this is a very poor result for the christian democrats. And there's a lot of backstabbing going on in the party. I think they'll want to see fresh blood. If not this year than in the next eighteen months many people looked at angela merkel as sort of the the leader of europe and one of the big leaders in the european union. Obviously we talk about these. Well quicken german terms but a couple of months to form a coalition government will the eu partners be a little bit nervous obviously france as a massive election coming up soon as well so What are the hopes here on. Getting this done relatively quickly. Obviously there's there's a lot happening in the u right now. Yeah i think there is nervousness that they'll be a period of sort of lack of reaction from from germany biscuits they. They won't have a functioning government. Let's be clear. Angela merkel will still be the caretaker chancellor therefore probably till christmas So there's a certain consistency there with policy but the key decision at the european level is to go ahead with this massive boned raising program to finance all the pandemic spending which gemini under mackel had finally sold rolled over and said yes to the question is will they really throw their weight behind that if you have a free democrat finance minister in a red-green-yellow government that finance minister could be pretty tough on european. Spending obviously allow shoals was former finance minister. Deputy chancellor is that part of the reason why he's so popular right now in the eyes of germ germans regular germans who want him to be the chancellor. Yeah it's fascinating really. I mean he he was. he's a pretty dull guy. I think it's nice guy's got a nice smile but he's he doesn't set anybody alight and i think that's what people basically rather nicely put By one of my friends who said the germans have voted for change but with the handbrake on. And that's really. He's the sort of handbrake on too much change. They voted for a pretty centrist. Sorta government You mentioned the pandemic spending and and The way forward to reboot germany's economy. Obviously those the smaller kingmaker we can say parties. Want play a big role in that. What is the big crisis for germany. Right now what else are they facing. Down the road and in need to work on obviously Things like climate change in more. Broadly working with the european union are important. But what else is on the shelf. There that will be important to tackle For the next government. I think the biggest criticism of the last years of mackel is a failure to invest in the big future so digital investment actually get german digital infrastructure up to the same sorta level that you have in many other countries. Us china even uk Germany's lagging behind and then getting the industry Actually ready for climate change already to resist climate change. Those are very big challenges quite apart from we know this to be still challenges of immigration challenges of living with russia living with china. All these things haven't gone away lots to watch their. And i'm sure we'll be returning to this regularly. Quinton thank you for that. That is quentin peel with me here in studio. Now here's monaco's ms searle with the day's other news headlines thanks daniel. North korea has conducted another short range. Missile test over its eastern coast. It came as north. Korea's ambassador told the united nations that no one could deny pyongyang's right to test weapons and self defense north korea conducted both ballistic and cruise missile tests earlier this month. Social Democrats narrowly beat Angela Merkel's alliance in historic German election
"Social democrat. Party in germany narrowly won. Sunday's national election projected results showed and claimed a clear mandate to lead a government for the first time since two thousand five and to end sixteen years of conservative-led rule under angela. Merckel the left. Social democrats were untracked for twenty six percent of the vote ahead of twenty four and a half percent for merckel cd. Ucs you conservative bloc but both groups believed they could lead the next government with need major block. Commanding majority in both reluctance repeats their awkward grand coalition of the past. Four years. Most likely outcome is a three way. Alliance led by either the social democrats or merkel's conservatives agreeing new coalition could take months and will likely involve the smaller greens and liberal free democrats. We are ahead in all the surveys. Now the social democrats chancellor candidate olaf scholz said in a round table discussion with other candidates after the vote. The spd's rise heralds a swing left for germany and marks a remarkable comeback for the party which has recovered some ten points in support in just three months to improve on its twenty and a half percent results in the 2017. National election schultz his conservative rival on in lash. It signaled his blog was not ready yet to concede though his supporters was subdued. It hasn't always been the first place party that provided the chancellor lash told the roundtable i want to government where every partner is involved where everyone is visible not one where only the chancellor gets to shine. He said in an early attempts to woo. Smaller parties attention will now shifts to informal discussions followed by more formal coalition negotiations. Which could take months leaving. "To healthcare should not be thought of as a privilege. It should be understood to be a right. It should be understood to be something that all people should be entitled to so that they can live a productive life. So they can have dignity and having a system that makes a difference in terms of who receives what based on your income is unconscionable. It is cool and in many situations that I've witnessed inhumane see there. There is nothing new in this. It's recycled left-wing claptrap, and it's exactly what Obama said. But staying that is not going to dissuade people who want this to be true, we're dealing with a new breed of leftist revealing with more uneducated ill educated angry fit to be tied. People who are standing ovation reacting to that kind of thing. Well, it's just not fair. It's a right and doesn't matter. How much you have you should get the best in his much. As anybody else is just right up their alley. But what's different is these Democrats Scholz and doom burn coming out and Pooh poohing, the whole thing that is new here is a montage back to sound bite seven. This is a montage of her platitudes and her agenda, and you tell me here. What's different from that? Which we got from Obama. We have to speak truth so much more in common than what separates us make sure that the most vulnerable and voiceless among us are protected healthcare should not be thought of as a privilege. It should be a right contrary to the values. We hold as Americans climate change is an existential threat to us. Listen, all children need to be able to breathe clean air and drink clean water. No reason why we cannot have reasonable gun safety laws. Do it in a way that is smart and strategic. We have babies that are on the verge of starving families that cannot pay their bills within our diversity. We. Also have so much commonality. I will say to you that I stand with you. So they sell her as something new and fresh and different. But if isn't new fresh or different it's just the same. It's already tried. It's already worn out. It's already proven to not work. So he's sort of Windsor. And and so I just wanted to say, Chris, thanks for listening and Selena is here for you. You've written great pieces in the post and the Washington Examiner, Selena I want to focus on whether or not again, you mentioned how beltway elites mysteries, I think there are missing Howard Schultz, and I think they are missing Venezuelan spring, and they don't understand Americans always rally to freedom. And they don't understand that Howard Schultz represents something new and different. And maybe not the last war that they're fighting. What's your reaction to boat had literally agree yesterday? I just retweeted his his, you know, his announcement about running saying that he's considering a run. And the amount of people on the left not the right because I think people in the right? Get it because they were drawn to someone outside of political assertive forces Adachi. Missive of of his chances and even him not even chances. But why would you run? Nobody wants anyone that's outside of politics. Does he never stand a chance to like my God, you still don't get Trump with someone else there so threatened by Scholz? Now Democrats he's threatening in the way the Trump threatened the Republican establishment Schultz threatens the democratic establishment. And they're so threatened that they won't admit the information in that. There is a path for someone like this. I don't know how much the Republican party is up for grabs. But it's got to be twenty five percent. And I don't know how much of the Democratic Party is up for grabs. If they go left, but it's got to be twenty-five percent belly with fifty percent and the other two with twenty five percent. Yes. Absolutely. And you know, you're absolutely right. It is sort of threatening their tribe. If you will, you know, threatening there existed, an incredibly dismissive, and I think it's dangerous. In the sense that is they're unable to accept change. I think that's funny because they made fun of the people that supported Trump because they believed that they were unable to accept change. And I thought they were the ones that were the most willing to welcome it, absolutely. Disrupt. Let me play for you a little cut from meet the press yesterday. Shane Chuck Todd and cut number three. On something sad. No compromise. Again. That's in the word cloud. The next thirty three weeks allow to go big and solve his Jared Kushner's leading it, and it is far more important to shut down the Madero government than our government. And I think Donald Trump is leading there, and he is winning there because of Bolton in Pompeii are going down to see Bolsonaro. And and it's that's going to happen. That's going to bring us together. That is going to bring us together. I think a Latin American politics that never gone well lately because is against that is for that. And that will help now. Now, I was surprised not by Chuck checks being the leader of a panel. But by leftists on Twitter, David corn, Ron Marz Joshua. Micah, they were all mocking the idea that Americans would support the Venezuelan spring and would join together in that. But we've always done that with the Arab spring with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Do you think your injure would the injuries actually say Yay? They got rid of the dictator. They got. Rid of this horrible guy Madero and his Russian PRC allies. Again, I watched you watched does the exchanged afterwards. Did I thought he's not understand do people not understand that it's in our DNA to embrace and support freedom. And when you you you anybody watch any years photos, or those those clips of all those people isn't that town in in the center square embraces, the idea of freedom and and being tired of the dictator ship. And and what we look square like that. And that is the way I don't care if there's there's three people there. There's a million people that you receive your. Yes. Yes. The secret police will come for you. Right. Yeah. That's yeah. I just think that are elite political media, and especially the left wing cannot understand freedom. They don't get it. And it's going to matter. More and more. Salena, Zito always a pleasure follow it. Salena Zito online go reader in the examiner reader in the New York Post and go to patriot mobile dot com right now and change be part of the change in this country. We get snow, but you can do you can put some is melted on the driveway. Now, then a little bit of snow of get del melted right away. So you don't have to shovel Bill used is. Mel the us like potassium chloride had don't use any rock salt Cadel burn up to grass to how about the potassium. Chloride? What does it do to the surface underneath if it's concrete or flagstone? She put it on fresh concrete. None of is melt she should put a fresh concrete. It should be at least a year old to concrete before put it on that. Allocators dish port. You might have to shovel. So I have the nicest neighbor that has the smallest dog. So what she does is. She always stakes out a little area in the front yard because if you get six or eight inches of snow over the dog's head because the dog is so small so she stakes it out. And I started to say, gee, have you put gypsum down on the lawn? Is that a good idea if you're going to carve out a little place for your pet to take a walk? Do you want to put gypsum down on the graph? Yeah. That'd be good to flush out the ashes the dog put down again. An excellent idea. "Welcome back to mafia and in this audio boom original podcast series we explore america's criminal underworld to reveal the lives and careers of its greatest gangsters our sponsors for this episode are hymns ziprecruiter and dollarshaveclub this series has been extensively researched and produced in consultation with experts authors and those who were actually there previously on mufida scholz is just too much of a hot head and has too much pride in a way to sort of give in to any events and kohl's demands and he's just doesn't have that sort of compromising gene that people like arnold rothstein luckily geno has nineteen thirtyone new york the city is in the midst of one of the bloodiest gang wars in its history a war between dutch schultz the socalled beer baron of the bronx and as most violent associate vincent mad dog cole it was exactly the kind of open warfare that lucky luciano had been trying to win when he organized the mob in nineteen twenty nine luciano realize if you could do it nonviolently and get away with it was a lot better than doing it violently then in long run too much violence brought too much attention too much attention from law enforcement and that could be your undoing public violence was something that gangsters at this time we're starting to abhor that they were perfectly happy with little private acts of violence or something happening in a back alley but shooting it out on the street in broad daylight was bad for business at god a lot of bad publicity and police even if they were in the pay of the local gangsters kinda felt obliged to do something about it and politicians were under a lot of pressure to do something about it so other gangsters were quite appalled by this war between dutch scholtz in vincent coal especially that it seemed kind of pointless in a way because scholtz probably could have come up with a much more peaceful solution other than sort of engaging fights with machine guns on the street this is muffin.
