Baxter This is Bloomberg All right Paul All right thanks very much Ed I guess for the half Alfred Newman he's co head of Asian economics at HSBC And Fred I want to talk about inflation if we can one of the major themes at the moment likely to inspire tightening not just in the U.S. but possibly here in Australia later today and later this week we get Tokyo CPI expected to come in above 2% When do you anticipate the BOJ might finally move and join the tightening party What's the threshold for that Well the BOJ has probably a longer one way before it needs to slam the brakes because remember it is really committed itself to only tighten policy when inflation is sustainably above 2% And even though inflation is spiking now nobody would call it sustainable in the best of sense of the word So we think actually the BOJ will stick it out and despite a weaker yen which ultimately is good actually for Japanese exports The BU J is probably not going to be into that much pressure Also remember that the government is using a lot of fiscal firepower to cushion the impact on households But for example subsidizing fuel and that is helping the BOJ just keeping policy on track for now How big of a problem is food price inflation Not just in Japan but I mean basically in the region It is one of the quiet really or it's not so quiet anymore but one of the biggest threats here for the region Everybody is focused on energy prices on supply chain issues still lingering certainly But when it comes to food there is a clear risk here that we have the perfect storm The perfect storm of rising energy prices disrupted exports from Ukraine and Russia of wheat for example we have local production disruptions and that will pinch households across the region and it might push a lot of people into poverty raise inflation but also lead to tremendous stress for particularly parts of Southeast Asia and South Asia where many many people spent more than half of their income on food And so this is certainly a major major challenge that's going to only worsen over the coming months for Asia How much of the inflation though do you think is being inspired by all these supply chain bottlenecks that we have right now And could it be resolved pretty swiftly once these bottlenecks get cleared Well on the good side it could potentially get cleared reasonably quickly in the combination of removing the supply chain bottlenecks and also weakening demand globally We have sort of these two forces here working in tandem potentially that reduce goods inflation But then we still left with commodity price inflation particularly food and energy That's hard to see that go away anytime soon And so it's one part of inflation might look better but we have others that might look potentially worse So going to second half of the year is very difficult to see relief on the inflation front across Asia So in the butterfly flaps its way well not that the fed is a butterfly but let's just say if the fed does get more aggressive here and does a couple of 50s in a row and maybe even more What is the knock on effect to Asia Well it's just going to raise the headwinds tremendously for growth here because for one it will fed tightening policies going to slow the U.S. and we can export growth from Asia That's one thing But the other thing is remember Asia actually raise its leverage its debt quite a bit and recent years over the past decades in fact Asia's levered up quite a bit and so higher global interest rates will just squeeze borrowers and that's then reduces domestic demand So we're not looking at a rerun of a taper tantrum necessarily something that's sort of short term terribly disruptive to financial markets But it is a massive weight on growth across the region And so that's the way to look at this It's just a further headwind to economic expansion across Asia as the fed slams the brakes All right Fred Newman We're out of time but thanks so much for joining us on
