Cam Newton Rumors: Cleveland Browns Spoke to QB; New England Patriots Only Team to Make Contract Offer

"The Adam Schefter report from earlier in the week that New England was the only team to offer new in a contract in Cleveland was the only other team to even check in on him. And it just seems so strange to me that a quarterback with that type of record in that type of proven track record as a quarterback doesn't get a little bit more into any interest really around the league, would you? Put that mortar towards his perceived personality issues. I personally think that all of that is garbage that it shouldn't matter that on the field is really what should matter if he's a little quirky. Who cares? Or do you think, which also was very likely? I think scenario that it just didn't play out. The timing was bad for Newton that When the pandemic happened, and when the league basically shut down was when teams had all of these injury questions with him. Right. I think there's a lot of issues here in hand. First of all, there is a stick mount there still, and it may be just a few general managers. Maybe just one or two. I don't think I have. The league thinks he's you know a problem in the locker room. They'd be foolish to think that these guys talk to each other runaways, exactly coaches. And you know, Cam is very well respected. You've seen some of the miked up stuff. And some of the behind the scenes stuff with camp gets along great a lot of his peers not only when Carolina a swelling around the week but also ah lot in the media, too. I think it's struck me was the injury. Was just so poorly timed out from his perspective, because, you know you've got a robust quarter market. I mean, you got Tom Brady out there. You've got guys left and right, you know, making transactions for quarterbacks. To the point where your injury rehab. It's timed out just woefully bad in terms of all that market activity, and so Cam's not looking to be a backup. No speculation. He may be backing up in New England police that want to get folks I just think it times out really poorly for him this time around. So when the starting almost got eaten up in that first week or two afraid, Vincey, I honestly think it was more pin taking a step back and say, You know what? We reassess my situation. Carolina. You know, I wanted to be there, but clearly they didn't want me there. And there was a $19 million deal right there the last year that deal that I don't know Carolina or he or comfortable with, but at the same time he's now paying, you know 5 50 Base and a lot of incentive to which is remarkably low, in my opinion, got to play for Bill Belichick, and I think that's the wild card there. I'm not sure if he would play for any other teams for that amount. He sees value there. And speaking of value.

How Will Cam Newton Make the Patriots Better?

"All right bill. We're here today to talk about the New England Patriots and Cam specifically began her. They used to film. The Cincinnati bengals sideline for which they were find over a million dollars mosque third round. Pick well the good news. Is that they've decided to uproot their entire organization and totally chance planet quarterback to bury the latest piece of evidence that there maybe not playing by the rules as everybody else. Bill Barnwell is the host of the podcast. The bill Barnwell show. You just, but there are people on the Internet positing that these events are connected. Of course. We are here today to talk about. The other came Cam Newton the New England. Patriots who could have predicted this? IS GOING TO RELEASE CAM to they're going to wait, and the Patriots are going to get him for nothing and they're going to be good. It's going to be awful in offense. It was impossible up to this point. The idea that the only team in the league that to starting quarterback might possibly make a move for the best available starting quarterback on the free agent market see Telepho-, obvious when you lay it out like that, but here's the thing it's June and according to our Adam Schefter. No other teams exception to the Browns who had some interest put in a call then New England goes out, and they get cam for basically nothing veteran minimum with incentives. How bill how? I think it's a combination of things I mean. Obviously the coronavirus has impacted team's ability to see workouts to administer physicals and Cam Newton of course as a player coming off of a serious injury, eight frank injury to the middle of his foot, which cost him pretty much. The entire two thousand nineteen season for that coming off the shoulder surgery has not been healthy in a while, and so you'd figure in a typical circumstance. He would be easy for teams to kind of see what cam has left, and then make an offer only, but there haven't really been teams able to make the sort of offers that would justify starting quarterback role. And then I think from camps perspective he rightfully would rather be making less money with the opportunity to start for the new, England Patriots say a playoff team from a year ago, then serve as a perhaps higher paid backup in a spot where he's unlikely to play. Knowing how little New England paid for him and looking back at some of the other quarterbacks who got jobs during free agency? Are there any teams that you think would have been wise to jump ahead of new? England and WHY IS IT CHICAGO? I do think that the decision to trade for Nick. Foles a player who realistically has if not Worse Injury History Than Cam Newton certainly a comparable injury history when it comes to his checkered past i. do think that the bears would have been in much better shape. Do Not trae draft pick and to sign Cam Newton for much less money than they're going to give nick foles over the next three years and I think there's a handful of teams that. That even if it happened as a backup, I think teams like the steelers. Of course you've talked about the titans as possible CAM, Newton location and I think absolutely teams like that have a veteran quarterback with a history of injuries and very little behind them in the backup role would have absolutely been smart to making move for Cam Newton, but obviously I think it's the Patriots benefit that the League has been so conservative when it's come to approach again. Let's talk about what we can expect out of canning. Which I realize, you are not a doctor, but the big question mark is you've outlined his health the last time we saw him play. Football was the beginning of the two thousand nineteen season. He only played a couple of games before his season ended due to a foot injury, he incurred during the preseason. What did you see out of Cam the last time he was healthy? The last extended stretch we saw from Cam Newton as a healthy quarterback, was the first half of twenty eighteen, and he was excellent. Newton throws. Fabio Capello Panthers one of the best teams in football at six to newton was tenth and Passer Rating Twelve Qbr and the panthers had guilty scheme that was designed to actually trying to out more quickly and leave some of the hits that candidate taking, and we saw his numbers include accordingly. SNAP TO NEWTON looking left throws it over the Middle Touchdown Greg Olsen. Cam Newton looking like a poster on feats. Assume. Thirty so frequently earlier in his career, they always posted pretty mediocre. Completion percentages in two thousand eighteen across the first half you had a completion percentage of sixty seven point three percent that was one of the best marks in football. He was averaging nearly four touchdowns for every pick producing really two hundred eighty yards per game from scrimmage. He was illegitimate MVP candidate through the first half of twenty eighteen. And then of course, the injuries struck. Labor rotator cuff just to soreness. He had a shoulder injury that led to surgery after two thousand eighteen. And then the foot injury cam stumbles Abu to the nearside. He's in trouble. Hit droplet like. Damn comes off the field limping a little bit maybe. But you tried to play through and was unable to do so.

That would be available this season. Every really want that many out there after again after his release, Efi begin the preseason beginning all season. MIROSLAVA different but. Time he got released. "Now it's time for the mail bag, which is brought to you by T so t so the official watch of the NBA shop. Whoa. Showed up there and a lot of people system. Nice things about him doing that with the NFL watch come on selling nobody's calling me to make any watch appearances. Okay. So as always if you guys leave a review on the I tunes page for the meantime show, you should also leave nice reviews for the Adam Schefter podcasts, we will answer the I will ask the question. I can't speak Adam Schefter, as to be nice squad team six. Adam asks, should I keep my saints season tickets after next season? Or do you see them to gliding? Okay. So we. The saints. I think he's joking. But let me let me put it this way. I actually when I did my NFC south preview. I you know, the saints are still the favorite, but to me that was another division where I felt like it was three and one where I felt like the falcons in especially the Panthers I was surprised to feel realize how much are like them after going specially some of the dishes, they made on defense my one concern about the saints. And this is what I'm gonna ask you is. Drew Brees his splits. When you looked at the end of last year, there are some. Well, me say this to you, first of all, if drew Brees is your biggest issue, then your team is in good shape saying that the splits are there and the numbers are what they are. And and, and he has not been prime drew Brees. He's been good drew Brees, which is good enough in many cases in good. Drew Brees is better than most quarterbacks anyway. But I think there is there has been a little bit of a drop off. But the good thing is he's so smart and capable. He knows what he can and can't do and Sean Payton and peace core. Michael, nobody can and can't do and they have all these other weapons that they figured out a way around it. Okay. So sure we dumped the bold Alvin, Kamara we throw the ball to Jared cook at tight end our new tight end. We throw it to Michael Thomas trae, Kwan Smith deep like you mix it up enough. You're not gonna put him in bad spots and the numbers. Yes, they do. Raise the question and get you to go. Drew Brees is your biggest concern. We're talking about the lions. And so the questions and they're writing the Packers drew Brees. Okay. We're real concerned to be from, like a top three quarterback to like a top ten point. Right. So, and yes, given all the other pieces, given the improvements on defense I'm not worried about the saints at all. I did question there another team similar to the Packers Adam where I thought the might add another wide receiver they went on to Jared cook. Instead, who I think's gonna be phenomenal in that offense? But, you know, I it's a lot sometimes to ask if Micheal Thomas. That's all who's about to become very rich. Right. So I think that they'll get that deal, if you're Michael Thomas, and you know that you're gonna get let's just say twenty two million dollars a year..

Hey, you doing Adam Darren Ashley longtime fan Cleveland, Ohio. Just went to ask with the Browns new signing of Kareem hunt. Does that make us the best team in the AFC? Well, thanks for the question. Darren I appreciate it. Let's keep in mind that hunts can have a lengthy suspension coming, and I would guess that when the NFL hands it down that's going to be ten twelve games somewhere. In that vicinity. So the chances are he's not even going to be a factor for a good part of the two thousand nineteen season saying that the Browns are on the upswing, they have accumulated a lot of good young talent. It's a team that is on the rise. I'm not ready to say they're the best team in the AFC. Not when Tom Brady and Bill Belichick still reside in that conference. We never ever say that anybody's ever better than the patriots as long as Brady and Belichick around but the browser headed in the right direction. And if you're a Cleveland Browns fan Darren that's all you can ask at this point in time. They're headed in the right direction adamant and no disrespect, but they were seven and nine last year. I mean, not only the patriots. But what about the chiefs? What about even the colts the Texans? The chargers what about your own division? Steelers ravens? And I think a lot of people especially with the Steelers might think that that Pittsburgh is on the downswing and Cleveland on the upswing. I'll give you that. When you were there during that time you were involved as an NFL live on Tuesday in the talk real game. And that play may be the single most important game in spawning the birth of the dynasty that was because at that doesn't happen. I'm sure there are plenty of SuperBowl titles. Believe me, but despite not six that played launched it to you know in that play happened. How significant was in the moment. No. I had no idea. All our, you know, the Charles Woodson comes off the, and I just heard a big like gasp from the crowd and turn around and the football is Leyland on the ground. And it was almost like I was stuck in time. Because my reaction was just a tad bit slow and the. From rates whose name, I I'm Greg Eaker. Yes. Greg beaker jumps on the football. Not jump on top of him. And I'm thinking to myself. That's it. It's over like, we're done lost. We lost a game. And then all of a sudden, you know, I'm I'm walking back to the sideline and there's all this chatter going on. And I'm like what what are what is everyone talking about? What what is the big discussion? And I just I looked at coach Bill check and he had his look on his face. And then people I heard that the the role to he knew the ruled that point believe he did. And I just heard people on the sideline mentioned tuck. And I'm like, what is why people why are people mentioned tuck, and it just it just kept reverberating on Ceylon tuck rule tug rule, and I'm like, okay. I don't know what this is. But next thing I know wall Coleman comes out, and he just brakes he breaks it down. I'm like, wow. Never knew it existed. I'm like, I will take it. Our absolutely take it. And you could just see the reaction from the raiders are machine Jon Gruden Asala line. And we we both know John his face got so red, and that's all on was so hot..

She's retiring from the NFL, December thirty first, and then we'll be joined by the NFL ESPN researcher. Evan Kaplan breaks down the upcoming divisional match ups in a way that very few could. And we'll take your questions as Adam questions for another week as we ponder how long Nick foles magic Paraic could continue. And what the eagles do about Carson Wentz. But first Woolmer titans linebacker, Bryan arrack, our Brian really appreciate taking some time to join us wanted to get your thoughts on what you saw from the NFL wildcard round this past week. And if you even watch now that you've retired from the game. I was probably nobody on. And which is after whenever we'd go out there and have a good turn over. Overwatch Philly Chicago Bain, and then we're quarter were to misty. But the go ahead game when drives so thanks ball. All these stress, but everything else is lights, and that's how everybody's going to remember that game as the game in which the kicker missed the kick. It's tough. It's tough. You know, man. That's that's tough. You know, you obviously expect the ticker like from that business go in, and you know, it's unfortunate. But that's that's the game of football. You know, you can't you just got to always be prepared yet. He just missed a mystic. I'm pretty sure routines, and he will be able to make that. But that's guaranteed or that's football. That's why so tough to to win a ballgame. Ryan if you're on that team and your teammate is the kicking who missed that kick, you say anything to do, you know, how do you handle that as a player on that joker? You gotta be a great team girl that you go to Seoul. You gotta think. Sure that. You know, you gotta elevate seasons. You gotta think of there though, you know, 'cause everybody beach about especially if we live in a social media. It's been crucified on there. So you have to fake sort of teammate as brother that have the big sure you have is back picks up because the man has a family. He works. Extremely hard is blowing his cry. Pretty sure bet or you wouldn't be in the lead. But like I said you have to be a great teammate. Now, you were gone for the week and with your fellow linebackers. So you didn't see the colts beat the Texans. But I'll repair actually I take that back. We did we said about at a restaurant area. Excellent. Once they get on Paul. Book. Yeah. We did just that you know, the colts quite well. From having faced them twice this season. They win the wildcard spot against your team in the final week of the regular season. What was your assessment of what they did against Houston? And do you think that they could go into Kansas City and up in the air ABC's number one seed? One. About the colts events being bad. So. It's hard playing. You gotta chance. One thing about the close. There's nothing sexy about that team there. There's just a bunch of guys that just work extremely well with one or another other of offensive line..

There are still no indicate. Nations that bell will report to the Steelers in time. And if when that doesn't happen he would be ineligible to play for the upcoming season. Which means this basically, it's up to James Connor to carry the Steelers through the remainder of the regular season and into the postseason and to try to do something that led me. "The Adam Schefter podcast is presented by ZipRecruiter, the smartest way to hire. On this week's addition of the Adam Schefter podcasts. We're joined by the former Browns. Hey, coach, hue Jackson who describes where it's like for NFL. Hey, coach to be fired as he was last week. And we're also joined by the Bengals offensive coordinator Bill laser which held turn around Cincinnati's offense and leads the Bengals into this weekend's match up against the New Orleans Saints, but first we're joined by the great Chris Mortensen, my dear friend who took some time to look back at the first half of the NFL season. And discuss what he expects to see in the second half of the season or more. We last had you on week one of the NFL season where now about midway through the NFL season. So I have to ask you what stands out to you about what you've seen the first half of the season that you haven't asked me since we wanted to be on your podcast. Okay. I mean, that's really was as I won a few a few people left standing in the building that maybe. You know, I thought would believe in me a little bit. But obviously we won. Okay, now trying to limit your obligations, my friend. I'm trying to limit your obligations, or here's the thing. I only go to wanna bypass the Rams and saints per minute. And go to what we saw Sunday night against between the patriots and the Packers. And a lot of people have seen the movie grand jury. No Clint Eastwood directed and starred in some people didn't like it because they felt there were some racial undertones. But if you really look at this glimpse at of humanity at its best than a source, and then ultimately at its finest in many ways, but there's a point there were. The Clint Eastwood character tells the among care character that tau who's just trying to get away from the gang life. And he wants will be an honest carpenter to earn a little bit of money to put in a spot and and be a good American. And so he didn't have in twos than have the money by any twos. And Clint Eastwood goes in his garage and Eastwood as a Korean war vet, and and he goes in there, and he towd losses to that. He'd bought because his gang. Meet him up broke them. All so I had nothing left. What am I going to do? So he basically, I think he hands my ranch. A screw driver. Maybe some pliers and some duct tape. He says here you can do anything with this. Knew anything with this. And so when I watched the patriots last night on Sunday night. I said Bill bell checked into anything with whatever is left in his to box and still be you on a on a big game. When Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback. He has Tom Brady has he has some duct tape. Here's a wrench. He has a screwdriver, and he's gonna make it work. So Cordova Patterson is that duct tape and James white is that wrenching. I'm just saying it could be anything wrong south again. And we know. This is so Sony Michelle's out. Yeah. It's and then there are still some things that are trying to sleep one of them is that listen look at what are you have what's in your inventory? You've got to make this work. So make it work. But then you also have the genius elect to original the genius of a young Sean McVeigh, not the wisdom and experience an expertise of a of a veteran Bill Bella check comes in this league. And just create something that is just you know, it's like is it would be like, Steve sadness. It's it's like a symphonic symphony. Me. I'm sorry. Did wasn't a, you know, somebody direct this..
