We come together weekly from Kent to Leila to share anxiety slayers sessions with you an answer listener questions from our inbox and Facebook page. In this week's podcast. We'll be talking about how creative activities can help calm anxiety. Welcome back a Nanga. I'm glad that we're talking about creativity today creativity and creative projects creative expression can help anxiety so much. Yeah. Really important. According to IRA beta, which we often talk about India's ancient science of living a long and healthy life. There are different body types and one is more prone to anxiety than others, and that one type which go to Varta tend to be naturally, very creative people by nature, the very creative so bringing awareness into creativity and keeping creativity going is really important, incoming anxiety and helping focus the mind on sweet tasks small accomplishments full of color, and different textures and sense. Really does help lot the mind down and help us for more relaxed than in the present moment. I find it interesting that that types are often. The most susceptible to anxiety. So here we are talking about creativity and how it can help helping Zaidi. And yet some of the most creative people are the ones who are suffering. The most. Yeah. The tide is made up of the elements air and ether. According to the teachings of IRA does. So we have these different body types coffer, Peter. Varta coffers, very naturally grounded that body type is from the elements water and earth, so they're very grounded naturally very stable grounded buddy type hitter is made from fire and water stone. There's the solidity of water there the presence of water there. Holding them down a bit more Varta Aaron ISA, very ethereal their zero type their head can be up in the clouds, creating designing if you look at the architecture skinny artist who's forgetting to eat and make him wonderful creations that would be typical of voter type person. But it's important to mention that as we have discussed before anybody can. Develop elevated voter anybody can become butter disturbed, and that's a really important point for us to mention something. That's happening. Very naturally now society is we're looking at screens all day long. We're bombarded by constant incoming information and agitates our nervous system, and it does bring mutter disturbance into the picture Forrest. So still whatever type you are really important. To get grounded and get creative. And when a voter type is in touch with their creativity. They manifest the very best of that time. Oh types of their pros and cons. And I'll give an example somebody I met in the summer who's a fantastic example of branded voter my doctrine, I was staying with my parents in the summer. And we went to this lovely little village in Norfolk. An amazing lady who runs a gallery there. And it's beautiful the colors the way subtitle. It's such a beautiful little gallery. So we might friends and God talking with her, and we went and visited a two three more times on visa, and now I check in with her own social media here and there. And she's extremely Vassar physiologically her body very long fingers. And when she stood up to give me a hug, she just kept coming up. Survivors can be quite by nature, but she was doing her thing. She had a studio where she did her. What she worked behind the desk all day long, creating these beautiful color prints, which she sells there, and you could see that. There was order and routine and structure, the gallery wasn't crazy. It was beautifully themed. Which is about your Mary best when it goes out of bounds. We can have everything everywhere because that's how I had gone. So it was a person. Walking the matrix of their very best advantage. She had routine. She was practicing aircraft west she works. Everything was set up beauts, Glenn warm. Unconnected and that's voter at its best. They're they're doing thing that grounded the warm their present and their kind when vertigos out balanced, we become ungrounded. You know, head more anxious. More stretched a little cooler a little more disconnected, which is not in touch with those qualities when they're imbalance. What are some of the ways that a creative person can protect themselves? So they can enjoy their creative spirit in their creativity without suffering from anxiety. The first thing is to allow yourself to be fully immersed in a creative pursuit and brings you pleasure. Whether it's for work for a hobby or just for the share enjoyment of it just allow yourself to pick something that you find relaxing and calming and make a routine event make a healing ritual of light a candle diffused some essential oils way, work oils, lavender lemon balm and rose geranium on really good aromas for coming anxiety. So don't shoot all over yourself and think you should be doing something else. So you should be here. You should be going there, which is what Vattel try and riled up in you win. It's out of balance. Give permission set aside a time and Sam gonna do this during this time and allow yourself to enjoy the other thing that's really important for people who acquire naturally of a high voter type is that they can disappear down the rabbit hole. And they can get sorry. I and what they're doing that. They forget to eight. I know when I'm working in the studio for us creating music, I can go for hours without thinking of eating or drinking. I'm just over here. Happy thing with but flutes, right? Oh, it's Doug. Oh, I'm really hungry, and I can step away from the computer, my head will be quiet lightheaded. So make sure you have a good breakfast on a creative day, oatmeal, cinnamon Armand Bill Browning nourishing breakfast. Make sure you stop for lunch, preferably something warm like some vegetable syrup with some nice. Chunky bread. Something woman unfailing and make sure you stop for dinner. And if you really get into what you're doing that can be challenging. So maybe set a reminder for that very important for voter type seat regular warm meals to help them fill Brown did and nourished. I liked the idea of having a healing ritual. I knew you weren't around your. It's just something. I naturally do. Yeah. There isn't even a thought about it anymore. There's anything is before leaving the house. Did I blow out all the candles and the use of essential oils? And then yeah, like you and Nanga I can get lost in and forget to. Have a meal and then be. Just incredibly voraciously hungry later. And that's you know, that's not good for ourselves. It can happen. Any of us. But the reminder idea is good like you said setting an alarm. I know that because I primarily operate in a place. It makes a whole lot of sons for me to have my to do list and know, what's before me and very much into getting this done in next next next and with vodka. It's not the same. And I watched that with my daughter, you know, for her it's not about the to do list, while she appreciates reminders than she will set alarms and things she won't have that list in front of her of what needs to happen. And so we'll have this little vodka conversation. About critic Timothy, but what I noticed for her. And for me when I'm feeling a little bit ranges when I do those things when I make it a healing ritual allow myself to take even if it's just having a. A T having hot water available. If I'm not hungry. I can still get some tea inside. I can still have a flask of tea to be sipping on which I find really helpful. Yeah. Hydration. So important we've not mentioned it before. But both have daughters are artists. Yeah. Another connection. We have another thing we have in common. And my daughter will have a flask of hot water with them. Now when she's painting a working when she was young I used to take her tea, and it would just sit there. Yeah. I used to call it the ceremonial tea because it never I get taken in. And they get rolled out. But I she's got older she's learned to manage yourself, really nicely. And sometimes she has two flasks with she'll have a flask of hot water and a flask of green tea or sometimes you'll have like a a Bali cereal coffee with almond milk canal, which is more nourishing. And she knows if there with her then she can sip on those that that'll keep going for a few hours while she's looking so again, really important to keep rated. And if you are if the nature that you're going to make a drink and forget to drink a flask is a really good idea because it stays warm. I always bring Bernard last over to the studio with me. And that's another part of self care. Self care is incredibly important in. It can be really challenging for creative person because they do get so caught up in that process. So this is why listening to music is helpful. These rituals are helpful having a flask of something to drink all of this stuff to support yourself before you. Enter that circle of enjoyment in that circle of creativity. Young reading Putin to be tactile when you're suffering with anxiety to find something that you can use your hands for. There was a segment on the BBC news this morning about surgeons saying that new people training for surgery didn't have the dexterity in the hands. To stitch up patients or perform the finer processes of surgery because people are just so use now to using mobile phones, and tablets, and we're all in our head and the academic system is very much head based rather than bringing an arts and crafts, so people losing that dexterity in their hands because they're not creating that is why painting and cooking and gardening and working with clay all of those things are so important for us to get his tactile as we can absolutely. And especially with anxiety, the sense of touch is really important so engaging as many of your senses as you can in texture and. Feeling really becoming very kinesthetic engaging feeling in what you're creating. So that's where working with clay. Is so helpful because as we talked about the different body types before kaffa is the polar opposite to Varta they're completely opposite. So in lots of people are feeling flighty area, and ungrounded and disassociated and dizzy nauseous all those things that go with anxiety in that the energy type. They need more for energy credits. Coffers. Made of the water is is clay lacks of getting your hands in the clay or even going to cover if you know, a nice coffer to ask for hug from a lean on you. And I know of one lady very volatility who suffered terribly anxiety, and she would just get her husband to lay on her. It was very careful. So she just getting to lean on her to help her feel granted and safe. And that was just intuitive to him when she learned about leadership, it all made sense. But intuitively, she knew she needed that white tina's. That's why we talk sometimes about weighted blankets members of our private Facebook group has been asking can wait blankets helped with anxiety. Yeah. They can because they bring that weight and stability, which is what's lacking. When we're out of balance with water, so get any hands in the clay getting your hands in the dirt gardening, getting your hands in the earth. Biking don't use mixes use your hands. Get your hands in there. Really bring your awareness to the texture sensation and temperature of dog when you're baking these things can really help as we're talking about self care in an all of these good ideas of how we can support ourselves. The other thing to bring forward to is to move your body. Get out in nature, go for a walk and do an inventory of what inspires you, and what treasures that you might be able to find that you can bring into your home, and you know, a Nanga constantly doing that with collecting stones and acorns and. Driftwood? I found a beautiful piece of driftwood may travels last weekend that is shaped in the form of a goddess which was just such a thrill for me to find to have. All of these little treasures right now. On my desk. very much like you. I have living plants as well. As some stones apes beach glass, and I have a candle burning I had not diffusing anything right now 'cause you would hear it. But all of these things are so helpful in. Getting outside and finding these little treasures just makes it even more special. Yeah. Again, this isn't a massive thing, isn't it when you just fully engaged with your surroundings bringing things home at this time of year, many people like to gather, Holly, and berries and different nuts. And as you said acorns, Mike, hang in your kitchen or your front door dry. Some orange pale make your own scented arrangements to have around your home is a really old fashioned natural things to do that put you in line with the season, and a very grounding the many of us have lost touch with. So really nice to to get back into those things. Now, remember when I was young my grandmother used to gather shells. She didn't live anywhere near the sea. So she must've went on holiday bought some back with us to gather shells and make Bob butts. she just get like an old plastic bump bump this play around it plaster and push shells in in different arrangements, and then Glazer, and she typed Miranda home, we've different phones and different. Spider plants, different plants, all over the house. And I thought they were wonderful really magical just bring in that element of the sea. In around the house share is I do that seasonally in that seasons with the decorations and. And because I've been blessed to have many travels where I can bring seashells home putting them out even put him on a window sill. So it's this beautiful reminder. Of a treasured getaway. But also something beautiful that you brought home from it Does it brings the see inside? Yeah. Whenever I have plants at home or on the steps leading up to my home. I always put beach treasures in the soil see glass things I've collected from beaches, and I have a little pot by me now and has a dollar net the elected, I don't remember where that one's from. But it's just sitting on the saw you sent me some stones from Lake Michigan. I'll have those around me. An and I really enjoyed that very often. I'll remember where particular shallow stone came from and just like to pick them up and fill their texture in the fullness and just half those earthy elements surrounding the right? A my daughter has a really, interesting thing that she likes to which is to collect shells to hold paints that that's really creative. Yeah. She pickup Baku shells and clam shells. And that's something the artists to do because we didn't have an art store with plastic. And but you paintings in, sir. And that's a very natural traditional web storing pain, and she has some friends that she's made contact with her to a London art school here who grind their own pigments. And they're gonna get gems Malachi lapis lazuli and spend ages grinding pigments down, and then they mixed them with different things as binders like gum Arabic can make their own paint. So just a couple of weeks ago. She received a shell in the post with some lackeys lazuli. Hickman there in the shell. So for her that was a real treasure man for me too. I love lapis lazuli that that cobalt blue color is my very favorite color incredible. And if you look back artists of the years, I remember reading a Dutch artist who had an apprentice brandies paints for him. They wanna stores so we can go right back and take things. You know, really natural. Really immerse ourselves. That's not something you can do if you like to paint. she learned the the paint that comes in tubes. You can squeeze twenty surface, and it will dry out like the little blocks that you can buy. So you squeeze your favorite colors into into shells. Put them in a little wooden box Arnold Minton or whatever you like. Sure. Carry that with you some people carry like, A little, what do you call those those means that you have little tin outside. So yes, NASA them all the time. They travel with me everywhere. I go. Okay. There you go. Some people are commonly used those tents, and they'll get some stick a few shells in cut down a little paintbrush. And then you can go on sale in nature, and we haven't got to be good. A painting to pain. I'm not good at at art, really, technically. But I enjoy it. I enjoy painting. I enjoy coloring like smell of pencils and the paints. I love wetting a piece of paper and just dropping watercolor paint on it. And just watching it. Go. Yes. It's really beautiful. So we don't need. To be qualified or acclaimed. Do these things just now you just made me think of a funny story. As of late, Merrin, and I were Mariners my daughter out in five ever shared her name. But we were on our way home from somewhere and other and. The some business had thrown away all of their annual plants out front to be picked up along with the trash, and there is a giant mound of miracles. And they were stunning there was nothing wrong with these marigolds other than it was time for them to go for the season. And. And in true form, if you knew me, you know, that this is exactly how I roll. I pulled over. And I said, I said Honey, would you mind grabbing me a few of those miracles when put them in a vase just you know, three or four five max. She said sure, and she jumps out of the car and the and I look over my shoulder, and she's standing there. Holding these two plans their routes hanging the plants in her hands, and she's just looking at me like you want these like, you just want these anyways Sure, sure, you know, one's fine and shoot. So she put one and put it in the trunk got it home. And my my vases are still full of these marigolds that are still alive took them the main plant and put it in a big jug, Fulla water and just let the route stupid their thing, the plants survive, and then clip the flowers and put them around and. What a beautiful gift that we found. The treasure to me. It is. It's a treasure. We had a good laugh about it. But I just couldn't let them just go to waste like that. When they could bring so much joy. Yeah. I think these things really are treasures who. So this time of year where you drive past somebody's home and they've picked some extra apples from the tree in their garden. And they leave them out if you wanna take some, you know, some surplus or some chestnuts these things the things that we've lost touch with and they're very very sweet and trouble with anxiety. Is it diverts us from those experiences? It takes us into ourselves into our suffering the symptoms of anxiety and just allowing yourself. To appreciate these natural, treasures, shells and pebbles and fruits, the pumpkins and squashes that are available this time of year. And just really immerse yourself in nature. It's a form of mindfulness and over time. It really does help coming down, particularly if you want to sit down paint or this coloring in which is what I like to have my mind trying to fly off the handle. And I like to listen to something inspiring a lecture on the bug. Loretta an audio book something that really catches my attention, but doesn't Chaz my mind is something immersive, but not to stimulating and asking pass, and I'll just be sitting and doing some coloring in or some some painting. The and you have something to show something beautiful to share with your family and friends, and you've helped mind really get rained in calmed down. So it's definitely very helpful denies spend a lotta time flower, arranging and. A lot of out still, you know, still in my garden, even though it's pretty close to. Time. We're we're that won't be an option for me even being outside, and then smelling leaves and the change of the earth and bringing bringing that stuff inside I also like to paint, and, and don't have my easel up right now. But that's something that will come back up. This winter, and I tend to listen to music, I will listen to whatever tracks interested in at the time depends on my mood, or or where I'd like my mood to be if you were to come visit me if he were in my house, you would you would see altars everywhere the creative alters. Everywhere. It's just how can I bring another piece of beauty into my living space without it being cluttered. My husband would tell you things can get a little bit cluttered. And he's right. But they're very thoughtful a little spaces in places where if you if you capture them, if you if you pay attention, they give you a respite they bring you joy. Creativity is is everything color. Beauty texture, man. Are we blessed? I think it's really nice point. You raise about having little pockets little places around your home, which drew your senses into that positive contemplation and that appreciation bringing in bratty chewed, and it just brings you back to the here and now because very anxiety. It it rules are all the possibilities and all the positively. But they can coexist. You can you can be anxious and grateful, you can be ashes and joyful. You can be anxious and incredibly creative and generous. And it doesn't have to exclude all those other experiences and the more we can allow them to coexist and stop anxiety clips and everything else is a really important of recovery. Without question. We came together today to talk about how creativity can help anxiety. I know that it's been such a big part of both of our worlds in. And I hope that our listeners really take some good ideas from our conversation together today. Thanks to Nanga. Joining me now first-class class. Father Dr Marks Eagle Welcome to First Class Fatherhood Oh. Really good to be here. Love being a father one of my favorite things in the world. All right. Let's start here. Then how many kids do you have and how old are they? So listen, I, have three kids and actually a lot of the stories in my book covert the politics of fear of the power of science have to do with kids because I learned about fear from being a father and about. About how to conquer fear and what you see and keep in mind and you know this better than anyone better than me. That things are dilated in children's brains, and so if you show them courage, it amplifies their response especially when the very little. If you show them fear, it amplifies their response. I remember when my oldest son was about two or three years old, we were hiking in a volcano in Hawaii this is in my book by the way and all of a sudden at a time of dusk when everybody was tired, we couldn't find the path back and we heard a dog barking in the distance and my son got shook up because we were shook up. And we and he was afraid of dogs for years after that same same idea with my daughter around the time that she broke her leg when she was very little she was in a bath with bubbles bath made bubbles and she was afraid of the noise for a while. So as parents, we really have to watch it because fear is the most powerful emotion human brain and it overrides reason every single time we think that we're reason oriented that we can reason through things. We think that we can come out the other side by thinking things through. Case it's always emotions we can battle the emotion of fear with courage with happiness with laughter with love we can't battling with reason, and that's what we're having. That's the problem we're having right now with covert. While very well said the doctor and you know what going along with that too I think a lot of our limited beliefs about ourselves implanted more kids to where we think we can't be something more than what we are and I think sometimes, if the wrong seed is planted in a kid, he may never think he'd get out something because he's been told that and I think that that puts a limit on where he thinks he can go in life and I think that's similar to so the fear does to these kids. Coach so true and we're hitting that right now with Cova if you tell your kids, it has to be online only or you tell them you know this is what safe and you're not right about that. It's GonNa stay with them a long time to come kids have much greater potential than we do. I told this story the other day about how my youngest son is now fifteen. was writing off to high school because high school reopened. Then he was happy to go on the bus with his friends smiling I'm nervous fine of worried is there covert. There is there covert there. But what the key thing was the bus, the friends, the school kids are not as afraid as we are. Naturally, we teach them fear and we have to not. Yeah. Yeah very well said and. You know Thanksgiving and the holidays are right around the corner here and we're hearing certain states telling us don't have you normal family gatherings have a limited amount of people at the Thanksgiving table this year and stuff like that. What would you suggest for families? Should they limit their holiday traditions this year do you plan to Limit Your holiday conditions? How should families go about it this year? I think that we have to learn public health measures and then they wouldn't be superimposed on US I. Forgot to add when I was talking about fear. You know what happens if you give into fear, the government then uses the fear to control you or the media uses the fear to create ratings, which then causes the government to control your they keep taking. A bow every time they constrict your liberty. So I'm all for Thanksgiving but why don't we do it in responsible ways? Why does it have to be either or either either I walk around with a mask like a mummy or I say a mask is ridiculous and I don't where it at all how come you're either distancing or you're in or you're in a crowd. Can't there be a middle ground where you obey the basic ideas of how not to spread viruses while at the same time getting together whether it's outside whether it's a heated backyard whether it's inside but with good ventilation with distancing I'm all for Thanksgiving I think the more of these traditions we give up the worst we're gonNA end up doing. Very well said and I think even as a power, you talk about fear that's the way we used to try to control our kids. If we don't want them to do something, we try to give fear to to to make them obey we're telling them to do and I. think that's what we're seeing now where being scared and then shamed into behaving in certain ways and you're seeing it all of their you talking about masks now. We hear these is their medical proof to back up the fact that masks will prevent this corona virus and is it safe for kids to be wearing these masks all day long in school? Well. So here's my answer to that. We only have week masks science. We don't have large amount of it. We have enough science behind masks for me to believe in them but what I'm really worried about is when somebody wears a mask it's Dangling off their face. It's filthy it's dirty. It's hanging off their chicken and then they come zooming up right next to you as though they're invulnerable because of the mask they've lost sense of all reality should kids wear masks in school and close quarters I've talked to many Pediatricians Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialists obviously I interview them all the time they're convinced that if you have the right kind of a mess, kids can tolerate it it it. Really depends my kids. School has an emblem mask that that has the emblem of the school printed in it, and it's kind of like got a little filter on it and it's very comfortable to wear. So I think it's okay to have missed it schools provided they're not constricting masks they can be part of a of the apparel that you wear, but it shouldn't be a form of punishment as you say or some kind of confinement. Right. Yeah, and then you know I wanna hit you on. This is that there's talks about vaccine maybe being available by the end of this year maybe by early next year since kids don't seem to be as affected by this virus as much as people in the older age brackets would you recommend for parents to allow their kids to get this vaccination when? It comes out. So here's the answer to that. It's going to start with me a healthcare worker and older healthcare worker melts co workers are going to get it first we're going to watch they're gonNA tolerated it's GonNa work. Then we're GONNA say, Hey, give it to the elderly and the elderly get it. Then we say, Hey, give it to obese people risk. Conditions poor people, people that are more prone to severe side effects of minority communities. Then we're going to say, let's give it to the general population. Kids should not be on the front of the line because they tend to get mild cases. So I think by the time, it gets to the point where I've had it where a lot of older people who? Had it where people in high risk groups have it I'm going to be able to come back on here and say, Hey, you know what? We've already given it to a couple of hundred thousand people maybe a million people now let's try the kids. Yeah. Yeah. Well, let me back this up to you. Then as a dad hear about how old were you? When. You first became a dad and had becoming a father kind of change your perspective on life. I became a father when I was around forty and I have three children now and it changed my life incredibly because I just published the novel my first book at the time my son was was was born and I felt like I had two children, my book and him and I learned to divert myself from my own needs to his needs and I found that I was not living through him. That's not what father should do do not live through your kids but see your kids as having search have having special talents and skills and abilities that you don't have one of the things that that's really. Great I. I use two words to describe this cultivate your children's talents cultivate and the second word be proud of your children but don't don't know your children live what you never did or or never accomplished to wanted always to accomplish. That is an enormous mistake right now my oldest son is showing tremendous writing ability and I've been a writer ever since I was little and I'm so proud of him I i. read stuff I go Whoa who is this that writes better than me and they go wait a minute. This is my son but that's the extent of it. It's his career it's his right now he's working. Bush. But he's he's also publishing poems and short stories as I did. I'm so proud of him but I stay out of it, and so as your children get older, you do let us guiding and more and more. Pride more more just pleasure at seeing your your children. The best thing that a parent can do and I'm sure you agree is to see your children become independent succeed on their own. Yeah good stuff and I do agree one of the things. That's Kinda. Fun about it. Like my oldest son became interested in chess at an early age and it was a game that I never played in my life I. I never would have imagined myself playing chess but I ended up learning how to play it. Now, we all played the family. It's a big part of what we do and those are kind of things that you know you gotta follow and and get behind what they get interested in it. kind of takes you in different directions, which is pretty cool to see what would you say are the top values that you hope to instill in your kids as they grow up? Why First Class Fatherhood climbing to the top of the podcasting charts listened to it. Dan's like you have President Dana White legendary New York City radio host Greg T and Navy Seal David, Rutherford have to say about the podcast what a cool podcast is one of the coolest ones I've ever did and congrats seriously I mean what a cool podcast concept and I love it. Good for you. Man Continue Success, Dude I, love this podcast. Your questions are phenomenal growth putting nominal I'm really happy and I can tell you honestly a proud of the apartment. Thanks for having me on. Thank you out and God bless you and what you're doing keep it up I think the compiling this many fathers and this much great information is going to be invaluable in so many ways. So I wish you all the best brother. So. Let's go. Dad's we are not babysitters we have fathers and not just fathers. We are first class fathers subscribed to first-class Fatherhood today. which is pretty cool to see what would you say are the top values that you hope to instill in your kids as they grow up by the way before answer that I gotta I gotTa tell you my youngest is a daredevil and So when I was eighteen I dove off cliffs, we did cliff diving. We're riding their bicycles across the United States I hated that but I remember taking my son a few years ago the Atlantis and he's going down dead man's dive I'm like, do I have to do this because I'm a father do I have to do this? You know. So so there are things that and one other thing is my my youngest son is a tremendous technical wizard and I'm not he got my father's engineering gene which missed me. So he runs my TV studio I can't believe it I'm so happy about that I go Sam Sam help held. Very cool. Did you did you end up doing the jumper now? Yeah. It was one of the roughest moments. Yeah, and then they made me go. Yes. I did the job. Then they made me cough in a helicopter one time to film to fill to do a filming shoot and I'm like how long is this going to be? They said seven minutes and it was the longest seven minutes of my life. You're daredevil not me you're the daredevils. What would you say the values that you hope to instill in the kids as they grown up? Independence is number. One honesty is number two because there's so much dishonesty in our society if you can teach kids to be honest. So it's independence honesty and caring. You know put other people be aside from yourself. A can't always be about you isn't that boring people that are always about themselves. So it's independence integrity and caring. Yeah. Dale Carnegie One Center. If you talk to somebody about themselves, they'll listen all day long. It's a better way to turn a conversation. Me Jump into your book here, covert the politics of fear and the power of science. Why did you write the book and what separates it from the other Kobe books that are out there it's because of the fear factor I wanted people to understand the following point because I've written a previous fear book. I don't know if was covered saying I can't write the fear Rangel because everyone's going to think I'm deep diminishing the actual covert angle, which is pretty frequent scary. But then I thought of something I thought the worst virus the more of a threat the more the fear level is going to go up the more you're over going over personalized the risk. So it's a narrative series of stories cove it is my book is about stories that occur that teach me how to guide myself through the fear and come out the other side. My father and mother played very crucial part in that because they're actually alive in the mid nineties and I have a series of stories. In there called the port stories with their sitting in their old porch where I grew up and I visit them physically distancing they're wearing masks and they teach me things things I didn't know this is your point. What are you learn that you didn't know his one my father got over cove in nineteen himself in his nineties and has cardiologists gave him hydroxy chloroquine and he thought he was laughing at it. Well, I don't think that's what helped me meanwhile a few years later a few weeks later he got antibodies that showed he had actually had covert and my mother to, and now months later he's convinced it was the hydroxy so he says to me on the porch. Whatever happened to this drug I said, well, people don't believe it works science didn't show it works and he says at ninety seven to how when did they give it in the hospital or when people were first getting sick like me and I said Dad you're right they're not giving it. When people I getting sick they didn't studied it in the right in the right time, and so I learned from my father had a look at things in. A higher perspective and then same as I'm trying to teach my children. And then my father says to me by the way mark did you know that in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, six, took the swine flu vaccine and I got very sick and I don't think my memory has been the safe same sense I said no, I never knew that and he said. What about this vaccine and he said there's a big difference I said, what's the difference? He said this time there actually is a disease and it's very dangerous and it's very threatening and it's called covert. He said, I, really hate all the fearmongering going on about this vaccine this vaccine would take. Of course, he probably doesn't need it because he has the antibodies already this vaccine I would take one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, six was ridiculous and then there's my mother on the porch. My mother said, do you know who uncle Leonard was and I said? No, I never heard of uncle she said, I had a brother. I said, we're really whatever happened to me never heard of him, my mother's ninety, ninety five and I never heard about a brother. She said when her brother was eight years before she was born and she never met him either because at nine months of age he had two severe ear infections and they needed to drain his ears for him to survive but they couldn't do it because the hospitals were filled with a killer pandemic virus known as the Spanish flu. This was nineteen eighteen and she cautions at ninety five. Let's not let that happen again and it is happening too. Many too many medical procedures and interventions are being overlooked because of people clogging the emergency rooms from covert nineteen. So we can learn lessons from the past and I learned a lot on this porch about how not to be afraid and to Coche show courage in the face of this virus. It's the best way to beat it, and we also have to embrace technology that we're using to beat at the treatments that are coming out the and the monoclonal antibodies, the antivirals, the steroids, and finally the vaccines I embraced the idea that these vaccines are coming at light speed at warp speed. Yeah. Very well, I don't have a Lincoln to description of this podcast episode two yearbooks. My listeners can get over there and check it out and one of the things octa Siegel is we get so many different we this is the age of technology you get information fastest way possible. But now it just seems like everything is conflicting. This seems to be political in some points. It seems like we're getting conflicting stories about masks vaccine, which way. Do what would you say other than reading your book here? What would you say is the best piece of advice you could give a to families about how to go about their life here with the corona virus don't rely on Dogma who's ever telling you. It's this way or the highway. It's dogma rely on the fact that this is an evolving situation and we're learning day to day beware of the Dogma beware of the ridicule. B Be. The divisiveness we're in terrible time. Now of division, it's not just the virus that makes us afraid. It's our leaders. It's each other. I would say that kindness piece that I was talking about kindnesses secure for fear and it's a cure for dogma learn as we go rely be happy for the technology. We have the technology that allows us to to have this to have this sky skype call with with. A great host, the technology that allows us to have online learning if necessary technology that's leading to tremendous cures at a rate of speed for a brand new deadly virus. But the old fashioned things we need are carrying an accepting each other do not do not ridicule someone for disagreeing with you try to learn what their site is an incorporated into your own well said that may tie right over into my. Last question here I love to ask all the data to get on the podcast. What type of advice do you have that new dad or for that about to be father WHO's out there listening? So speaking of fear you're going to be afraid you're going to be afraid when you're in new debt as I was about loss of love from your new spouse, you're not ready for this, but your spouse is. Going to divert affection to the child and what you need to do, and this is so important for fathers out there. That's how you learn to be a father to understand that you can love that child to the way the mother is equal to the mother I like to say I'm I. Don't think this came from me but I like to say what percentage of a of a parent should I be? And the answer is each parent is one hundred percent. Each is one hundred, percent ninety, just fifty percent. Each is one hundred percent you act as a father the mother's not there the mother actors though you're not there and the child gets twice the amount of love do not be Joseph your newborn. That's my biggest lesson that I learned from my life. Yeah. Well, very well said I love the advice just been an honor for me I gotTa say Dr Mark Sceviour, I last father all the way. Thank you so much of. Time here on first-class Fatherhood you're a great guy and you have a great podcast. Thank you for joining me an honor. Thank you. Both. Back. You are lopped on women's basketball your daily podcast on women's basketball. Hey women's basketball fans we are back. It is thursday if you listened late last night. I posted. Dt is phoenix mercury. basketball highly. Recommend that you check that out but as promised in that episode. We're going to get into a few more of big free agency moves. And before i get started on that i mentioned. I wanted to walk through my new york times article. I'll do that a little bit on this episode. But i wanna shout girl talk sports. I wanna shout out pepper personally. The next of course win cider. Across the timeline has done some fantastic work Who am i missing. I'm sure i'm missing. A lot of people brendan clean with forbes howard mendel of always but particularly with his work with the next. These are some of the people that have been keeping their finger on the pulse. Rachel gallion our chambers. I mean the list goes on. And on i just wanna make sure i give love to folks who have really dedicated a lot of time to free agency. Gabe ibrahim my co-host here at locked on just have been doing a fantastic job. I used a lot of the resources that i just named. When coming up with my new york times article. I was able to pull that also. Oh my gosh. We have to shout out camille over at w. slam. I gave a shout-out to uninterrupted. And what they did with chelsea gray I will play some of that on this episode of mentioned it for yesterday. Show going to play some of it for today. But that's why when. I was doing essential resources. Tuesday i made sure to talk about a lot of these outlets. Hopefully they're not new to you because you've heard them on the show before really great work. That's happening in women's basketball. So i almost stick taps. I'm still kind of in my hockey mode but Got a clap it up for those fantastic outlet and individuals giving us so much women's basketball content before it was cool. Of course. I have always mentioned michelle volvo. One of the pioneers when it comes to covering women's basketball and has consistently done it since before the wnba launched. Which of course we know is coming up on twenty five seasons so michelle vogel is an og for real for real and very thankful for the space that she occupies. It's just it's just love. I'm feeling like you know february. A lot of people already getting ready for valentine's day but you know love comes in all kinds of forms. And i just wanna love up on everyone. That is doing fantastic work. I see you. I appreciate you. Honor you okay. So free agency. Let's actually get into chelsea gray mentioned uninterrupted. I think i'll drop that link in yesterday's episode. I'm going to drop it again today. But i want you to hear a little bit of the process and i really appreciated chelsea and her agent allison talking through the and the clip. That i'm going to play in a little bit. Here is actually allison and chelsea looking through the and i think really knowing that. Cba instructed what chelsea did last off season which led to. What happened this offseason. So here we go a small snippet from the uninterrupted. I will link this war you. This will be chelsea gray and her agent. Allison gaylor talking about free agency ahead of the twenty twenty season more with a that. Yeah i work for the team. She's a free agent power vegas last year chelsea became a restricted free agent. For the first time it's been cool man to kind of see how people see me in the league. Other teams operate it. Other people treat their players treat superstars from there. You can make an educated decision but when you only have been with one franchise kind of like you. Don't know what you don't know co signature. Which is our team housing. And then eat thirty. We'll come down for breakfast with phil. Every team wants to click good players one points quality person. Our team is a team of really good individuals. And i believe someone might chelsea fit right in. I can't see myself really playing for anybody by a team in the west. La has always been home to pass this family's all in california they come to the games so that's important to me and the only other team airs vegas these two on then you can close the doors right here. Make it a two bedroom burkett. Yeah letter people come visit all the time. You're very back. How about that free agency is. It's been wild. so far. Rouge crazy received a steph yet. Said okay sorry i just feel good bit. I figured yummy clear. This is the full cba. And then. I pulled out stuff that i think is relevant. Hit the focus on the players right now by. The wnba has been a long time coming. That's your top priority is a mixture of the players taking care of across the board from how they're housed how they travel Obviously financial from their salaries but more marketing and helping them grow their brand individually and what opportunities that give them into town to grow themselves an brand to participate in the community and just to be known as one of the big things. I think about women's professional sports now. Is you want to get them out there. You want them to grow up in the town or across the country so they become household names so time off owners is the first inning. Which basically if you don't play overseas over a certain amount of time you get a certain type of bonus we can skip to thirty seven. The only players that are for that supermax number two fifteen number are six warriors service except next year starts to be five or more which is super annoying. Because if they would've been that effective immediately you would have been eligible right. Which is why when you're dealing makes sense. So are people able to negotiate in between one thousand five hundred fifteen no one eight hundred five. Fifteen year was credible creates a bigger disparities players. Which is the purpose right right. Like they wanted to differentiate between the last bashar sceviour. Everybody was getting the max. This is where it gets interesting. These new marketing agreements taps each player app to fifty. So if the week of pay you even one hundred fifty a random appearances then you have time authorities in you go play overseas for two or three months. That's pretty good. yeah. I don't think people realize Especially for women's basketball players like unless you're really in that world how difficult of job that they have because when you think about the wnba season runs from may to september in most of those players will go overseas a week two weeks a month after that and then they're gone until the next season is hard to go year round but it's the way w players up to this point has been able to make money but they're paying you over five hundred thousand dollars for season to come in there and perform bigger question based on all this like how much money in offseason to keep you here matter. I mean it matters for sure especially because on not just for this season but upcoming season's because the new cba making a priority and that going overseas. I mean i would go to. Hopefully china serbia shorter season. But i think it's important that like egon. That's have gone for the same. Otherwise actually yeah. Yeah yeah that's the neighboring countries are not in place right now. So we'll figure that part out life overseas. Is you know a gift and a curse. I think one of the bad things about is that you're away from your family your way from your friends but some of the great things about it is able to travel the world. You're able to play against different competition lineup. Lot about yourself for this. Nothing like being able to be in the states. See your family them come to. There's nothing like that. Vicki likes it. Now you're gonna crowd and you see family support on my dad here as well and my grandmother was here. I have close family of friends. And that's what it's all about so again. That clip comes from uninterrupted. A look into free agency with chelsea gray and again that was chelsea and her agent and her wife talking through the most recent collective bargaining agreement and positioning as you may have heard to sign a one year deal ahead of the two thousand twenty season to make her eligible for the supermax in two thousand and twenty one which is exactly what we saw play out. You can watch a little bit more of that. It takes you through the process. I think it's a really cool look into what. Wnba players are thinking about and also chelsea and her agent. Allison talk a lot about how the wnba with the new collective bargaining agreement is trying to prioritize time in the domestic market. It's a sliding scale as you likely have figured because salaries aren't what they are a half a million dollars. Some players can make playing overseas. Wnba not quite there yet but with the draw to be closer to home. We'll see especially for veteran players that have been able to make their money overseas. So i think this that part of it in particular is really going to have some interesting implications in the years to come but coming up next on a locked on women's basketball. I'm gonna take you through a few other things that i thought were interesting. I want to take you to alita. Clark going to washington talking about defense. Y'all know i love defense. But also mike tibo talking about ariel powers and that will be in our next segment once again. I am here to talk to you about rock. Auto dot com. Care to go dot com. All right we are back. I wanna take you to washington. They sign a leash. Clark really like this really wonder if the liberty made a play for a c. But anyway i digress alicia clark coming to washington and she got us a really interesting question which i believe is part of an article for the athletic by david aldridge on defense so definitely going to play that clip and then you'll hear from coach and general manager mike tibo on pursuing leesa clark and things kind of phasing out with aerial powers so here we go taking you to the washington mystics virtual press conference alicia clark two-time wnba champion looking for a third. This time with the mystics. Thank you so much and keep you. Could maybe reflect on how you think you might set infernal leadership perspective. That's a really. She'll be terrific coming. I think you know the players where look around the league over you. Look at the player talk. Various teams are the true leaders. The government wants like for whatever whatever that needs and it's clear to us. It was one i trade with the past all. We're aware that particularly at taj. And that's why. I asked this process but you know players know auto right. Shits fatigues is or sometimes an organization. Do pick different for the flying against them overseas or lies after again But people you know the good players just been clear to me When we played seattle that cheese always calm in a pressure situation that you can see lumping. Talk who they listed and you could just see when you play against somebody. So i just think that that's has stood out to be my shafran and other players. Our team and there was an easy fit that she will commit be respected immediately. Her teeth nights knowledge should look with kind is maybe you are obviously thought of as one of lee expensive players in the league and i just wonder from your perspective over the years defense gives valued by people did come to whether it's contract negotiations or really evaluating the past players in the league art. Does it seem to like these someone who's really good defense. It's one of the best players in the league or do they kind of get pigeonholed as t fence specialist. So i'm gonna updated you talking about like media season or outcomes I think there's been more of an appreciation for what the player brain onto the table. Night in and night out. I still think there's room to grow in terms of Understanding what makes a good defensive player You know not always thou flocking steel You know and and for me as somebody that has taken pride in that and understands like okay tonight. I'm gardening diana. I know she. You're never gonna hold any players corless. Okay the guy give her to take. Are they up. Because the cianci played against us in my team is shooting pretended to lower than when she plays other teams. And so those are the types of things. I think You know moving forward. That's where the areas to grow and it's easy to allow. They have so many clocks. Somebody feels okay. What created that was the person that you know create is complex is what i'm trying to say and i think it's growing and the you know becoming more of an appreciation And you know when you have commentators that are watching games. You know talking about little things that happen on defense and then making the feelings that block happened. I think is educating people to understand like okay. Yeah there's a lot more than is a lot more complex And that's you know for me. I'm grown in the defensive area over over the years. That's something that. I started to realize myself if i leave the game and somebody's to to forbid teen. I'm like yeah like i may. Have you know the field. Or whatever like i have. One of the best players in the world to the team says an amazing feat. And so that's how i started to change my mindset when i got out of the four is is understanding that you know about the complexity of it. I think you'll continue to grow. I'm it goes into medicine physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Minnesota won't has been taken in the last three months. They term you dacoven. Nineteen as you know. Covered stands for Colonel Writers Disease Twenty Nineteen. It's cost by the wires. One hundred twenty nanometers size white us all saas of two stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome owner. Why does to wonder we already know about this? December twelve twenty nineteen. The fuss case lead to seafood market in China was important in January. Twenty twenty the fresh deck. Do the new wireless was reported in. China generally took teams twenty twenty. I skip outside. China was confirmed in island. Who reported a global emergency on January thirtieth twenty twenty February i? Twenty twenty first case was reported in the United States in USA. Today we have over fifty four thousand cases and seven hundred eighty four deaths worldwide is over four hundred thirty thousand cases over nineteen thousand debts. Long been working. They're nice and figured out what the symptoms of the disease has been. We know that from a steady hand. A hundred and thirty patients were infected with Kobe. Nineteen ninety nine percent of patients had fever. Fatigue was present in over seventy percent cases. Dry Cough in fifty nine percent of cases and the Red Sea and forty percent meighan pretty tight percent and this neon thirty one percent of cases respectively no no twenty percent of cases who'd have temperatures below hundred point four degrees Fahrenheit. However you symptom has come up. And that is the focus of today's discussion. You Minister the doors and the Jazz basketball. They're Utah Jazz. Movie Globo both affected by Cornell wide US mentioning a tutor that they could not smell. They had an announcement today. The joint over phone by Dr Aaron O'Brien right -nology division chair for the division off the Department of Energy at Mayo Clinic. Thank you for joining us to me. I would like to Kinda ask you a couple of questions. On what the. What is the kind of understanding of an awesome? Yeah lack of smell impatience with covert nineteen. This is a relatively new symptom. That's being discussed and like you said it's been Getting out on twitter but we have some new data from some reports. That are coming out. So what do we know about the incidents or how often does happen in patients with covert nineteen? So there's a new report out of Korea this week and then Korea. They've been very aggressive about testing people with symptoms but also contacts who don't necessarily have symptoms and then this report that just came out they in three thousand people who tested positive who had symptoms twelve percent lost smell only eleven percent loss taste only an eight percent loss taste and smell so that's about thirty percent of people who had some tested positive but like. I said they've also been testing as symptomatic people in in fourteen hundred people who were cova positive but did not have the classic symptoms fever and Cough. Thirty percent of them also had some report of smell us. It was similar with thirteen percent smell. Loss only ten percent taste loss. Only eight percent taste and smell so even without other covert symptoms about thirty percent so they think of just a mild case of cove. It had some taste and smell us. There's another report that just came out of Germany which is much smaller where they talked to one hundred people who had mild cova symptoms. Who were quarantined at home? So these are people who are not sick enough to go to the hospital and in that report of a hundred people with mild cove. Two-thirds reported a taste or smell symptom. those are the only reports. We have right now other than these anecdotal reports. This is this is of importance In because what we know about the clinical presentation of nineteen eighty one percent of patients have no symptoms on my money like symptoms. It's called it's called Mighty clinical symptoms. Of course we know of those cases of sceviour diseases with prison with Disney off or hypoxia with about fifty percent of the lung enrollment within twenty four to forty hours. But he's only fourteen percent of the cases the critical diseases which end up with respiratory failure and shock with monthly organ failure. They comprise about five percent. So the question. I would like to know Is there any difference? We know about The the prevalence or incidence of and that's me on patients who are belonging to this eighty one percent or e symptomatic covert nineteen for the symptomatic patients of Kobe nineteen. Unfortunately there's not a lot of data out about a symptomatic patients because there's a lot of places that aren't confirming Cova positive and asymmetric carriers other than this Korean study now the British. Emt's society and British Reina Logic Society. This week is saying that they think some of these people who have just sunset loss of smell could be hidden carriers of Kovin. And I think that's mostly based out of this Korean study but also physicians in the UK hearing patients who are just reporting sudden loss of smell at a higher rate than we typically see so. There's some concern that just lost. His smell could be someone who's carrying cove it we don't know if mild cases are more likely to have sense of smell it might be just the same as people with more severe disease. I think when people have more Severe Cova. They're focusing on the fever and the cough and frankly. I don't know that a lot of physicians are asking about taste and smell. I think hopefully with this information coming out people will be asking more and so we'll find out if the incidents here and elsewhere besides Korean Germany's similar so As a as I understand from what he was saying and must me Or lack of smell or altered taste should be screening questions for patients suspecting to have called nineteen infection in the UK and Britain. They are advocating. And I heard there's going to be some potentially new guidelines coming out today or tomorrow but they're suggesting that lots of tastes and smells should be screened symptom and in the US. The American Academy of Otolaryngology Neck Surgery is also now advocating for a loss of taste or smell to also be screening symptom. So my next question could be could be the cause of an encoded. What does he have any hypothesis from working theory on this we know that? Cova causes a high viral load in the nose and nasal in fact the nose is one of the highest sites of viral. Load for Kovac. Nineteen looking at other viruses that cause loss of smell. Lots of smell can be fairly common with other viruses like rhinovirus that causes the common cold when people get cold from a virus. Initially they may not be able to smell because their nose is congested. And it's just a blockage of the knows that prevents smell some of those patients though after the cold symptoms resolve will notice that they can't smell even they can breathe through their nose. And we think some of that smell loss is because the virus actually can injure the olfactory nerve endings in. The top of the nose are the olfactory neurons. And they're basically exposed to the outside world and they can be infected with the virus. We think that those neurons actually die if they're infected with the virus to help protect the central nervous system so that the virus can spread through the olfactory nerves into the brain theory but with other viruses because they can actually injure the nerves and caused the nurse to die. It's possible that that's happening with Corona virus from what I've heard there's less congestion and runny nose. I think with Cova. We don't know for sure then with other viruses. So one theory is that the viruses actually injuring the nerve endings in the nose causing loss of smell. The truth is we don't know for sure yet because we don't really have any data that speculation. But that's what happens with other viruses as a as a general practitioner in the Male Clinic for the last twenty years I think one of the most challenging cases icy is when patients come with an awesome meal. They've they're not able to Smell and this is when I think the health of not overrun but I was looking at the it. The United States national out and your personal examination survey even tried to covered. What's the mentioned? Us alone thirteen point three million individuals or forty years who have some form of autocracy dysfunction of about three point. Four million people in two percent have an awesome sceviour hypo smear But it's sort of tears that you're not very good reporting a loss of smell very good at reporting our smell as normal meaning that this symptom of loss of smell has a newest sensitivity of fifty four percent and specificity of seventy eight percent so knowing this are there any different degrees of and US me. this group of stations that. They're complaining that they're probably more affected than the normal cases of which will talk about in a minute which you seem Jones taxes and any specific orders that we need to test. These patients weren't affected by covert nineteen. What do we know about this? Yes so the reports out of Korea and Germany didn't really qualify. How much smell off there is. It was just a self reported symptom of loss of smell or lots of taste. So we don't know how many people only had partial loss. I think some people are trying to do more. Prospective studies or prospective data collection. There are smell tests that can help determine if someone has a personal loss. Basically scratching sniff test or identifying smell. So hopefully we'll get some more data right now. We just have self reported loss of smell some of the twitter reports that you mentioned and some others. I've seen are where people say all of a sudden they can't taste anything or they can't smell anything again. We don't know about more mild loss. The other thing is that older people normally start to lose smell as they get older so it's unknown if someone who's over sixty five who may be already having some decrease sense of smell with normal aging if they would be able to perceive if they lost smell or not we don't have any data yet on if there's a difference in the smell loss based on age either. Kovin the other question you had was about specific odorants I've seen some studies that there's some certain things that people have around the house. That may be helpful. Experiment like your toothpaste or garlic. If you have garlic in your refrigerator having something that you can try to smell that you have around the house Those two smells odorants. Were in some studies very consistent with more specific smell test done in the doctor's office to identify if someone could smell or not as I said that You tried to cove it. We haven't seen so many cases There'll be an outpouring of cases to into into medicine Really Pretty He. Percent stands out as a number of patients with and that's a huge number but apart from that there are many other causes of an us which is happening obviously happened even tried to call it in Jones practice. And could you talk about the kind of cases that you see in which is different to you by in our practice patients who have Who could have an Osman which worry some types of which are not? The worrisome is less worrisome types of an estimated the most common reason is after a viral infection or after an upper respiratory tract and fishing where people get a loss of smell and that could be from obstruction. Or saying you say this but after the cold passes the smell us. Persistence most likely from viral injury. That's maybe forty percent of smell loss. In general we think That take a smell. Life can recover can improve the thing about the olfactory. Neurons is that they can regenerate. They're the only nerve in the body that regenerates and so people even years after a viral smell loss can regain their sense of smell. The other reasons for smell off might be chronic sinusitis Head injury close head. Injury can cause then smell loss and after head injury. Unfortunately they're unlikely to get a return of smell because the nerves have been sheared or torn. Sometimes we just don't know so there's a large category that's just idiopathic and then like I said aging. It's very common in older people that they can't really smell much of anything You can see lots of snow with other neurologic diseases. Such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. I have had people come in worried that if they can't smell because they have Alzheimer's Generally those are also patients who don't recognize that they can't smell because they also start to have some memory decline so losing. Your sense of smell does not necessarily mean that you're more prone to have those neurologic diseases if you don't have any family history or any other symptoms that are concerning again it's usually Smell after the upper respiratory tract infection or aging or ideographic I would say some taste disorders and some small disorders can be associated with medications. Like anti hyperloop de mix and some anti hypertensive. And what are the other widely infections? That cause temporary or on more prolonged and elsewhere so Rhinovirus we think can cause smell loss which causes the common cold. There's some para influenza viruses basically any virus that causes an upper respiratory tract infection. We think can be a cause of post viral factory loss and so you can see it after cold so even now people are still getting colds. People are still getting influenza so those could also be caused. Us smell us And there have been some other krona viruses that have been associated with smell as well so the flu season and of course corridors one of the many That adding onto the burden of our problems including Corner Vyas Elena whitest through and it looks like it could be all there could be other than how one could be seen right now and this. This could be a time to Just the aware of it. Of course they would probably need to over trusting. You just mentioned that they may be symptomatic cases also of Kuwait who could have an ultimate. So it's just you have to be more alert when somebody prints Austria during this period. Now is I would like to know from you. is this situation. Temporary is it permanent How did he manage me in any vanities that you're doing this? Pdf that one could look at and prescribed for patients who have an awesome so right now in speaking with some of my Korean colleagues. There's no longitudinal data so we don't know yet what the recovery rate is or how long it may take to recover with other post viral factory loss. You can see improvement to a couple of years after smell loss and the rate which people recover can depend on things like their age. Older people are less likely to recover or may recover more slowly And the degree of smell loss can affect recovery so someone with complete olfactory loss or nausea is less likely to have complete recovery compared to someone with high pas me or personal loss if someone came in just a regular cold and had smell loss that had been present for a couple of months. I would consider systemic steroids or topical nasal steroids unfortunately with cove it. There's been some debate about giving the stomach. Steroids with Cova did and so right now. The other right knowledge antiques. That I've been in touch with online are saying we should hold off on giving systemic steroids for these patients until we know what the potential effects of steroids are on Kobe infections. In general so for right now. I think conservatively I would say for someone who has new onset smell loss. I would hold off on stomach steroids. The only treatment that we know that's really effective is actually a factory retraining. In other cases of smell us we tell people to practice smelling every day. So get a couple of things around the house or some essential oils. You can smell and actually practicing smelling every day taking a deep breath through the nose and trying to smell can actually help. People recover their snow more quickly. That's the safest the other thing that say with smell us to for people to be aware of is safety issue making sure that their smoke detectors work making sure that if they have natural gas or propane in their house that either they have an alarm or someone else in the house he could tell them if they have a gas leak and making sure their foods non expire. Because if they can't smell they won't be able to detect a fire or a league or bad food. That's an excellent point. That leads to my next subdivision which I've had and I said these are some of my most challenging patients even covert because as you said The knowledge is that this could last for months if not maybe years and I've had to be patient with a nausea who begins depressed As a patient could not to socialize. I didn't want to socialize with his friends. Didn't want to go out to restaurants because of his altered taste And and the smell does that really brought him down. He lost weight and there are one case. I remember that I actually order for be added. Complete blood count. I'd are testing like that because I was worried that he was developing nutritional deficiencies As a result office an awesome. Yeah and I would like to reemphasize What do you exactly said? O'brien that there may be an inability to detect orders of spiteful smokes and gas leaks and during this time physicians was he patients. I know they're GONNA be overburdened by managing many other aspects of corona with all the contact crazy and informing everything but for the patient. They have to either give it. Written guidelines are are are called. They're called a loved one saying that this is going to be a problem and they should be careful about Not being around smoke. They won't be able to identify mellow small ghastly or spicy food especially this concern of individuals who are among certain professions. Like if you're a chef there goes your job Because that's that's that's part of your job smelling food. If you're a you're a perfumer or you're a firefighter. You require your sense of smell. So that the emotional part of NAS MIA was just beyond just the diagnosis of and asked me what to do with his patients and some have recommended follow up with the primary care and be four six and twelve months More so for I'm in fact. Take the discussion and support but From your standpoint Dr Brian. I know you can be you're retired. Team of -nology might be inundated with patients Just who have lost thirty percent of the smell. So what kind of follow up. We'll be recommend to spacious Follow up to you or group or follow up with the nurse. Practitioner off with the primary care One of the expecting. And how do we emotionally support these patients I will say I Yes I will acknowledge to that. We have seen reports of increased depression anxiety for people who have lost their smell in general. So that's definitely an association that we see as well as far as seeing new patients for smell onset so two things one. We are really limiting. How many people we see for acute symptoms right now in general but the other thing is out of China and Iran and Italy they are reporting high or rates of infection for ent doctors potentially because they're seeing patients who have covert with mild disease and so the antiques have been more careful recently about Seeing patients who may be shedding virus out of their nose so anyone. Who's seen someone with new onset? Smell would be very cautious that they could be carriers As far as follow up right now unfortunately we don't know what the best treatment option is. GonNa be and maybe even a phone visit maybe more appropriate but people can try some olfactory training or try to smell things at home both therapeutically to try to improve their smell and also to help monitor on their own. If their smells improving we do have smell test. Basically that's like I said the scratch and sniff test or smelling different odorant in the office to give someone a score on their sense of smell and potentially in the future we could track people over time and see how quickly their smell improves The right now. Since we don't have a treatment it may be more appropriate for phone visit at this point to document and to get advice from your physician or provider but not necessarily look in. Someone's nose at this time until we know if smell could be a sign of a nascent dramatic. Cova carrier or a mile cove infection. That's an excellent points The Co Brian and very important to see the that you you and your team are protected during this period of course in four months and six months then persist patient would complete what by then and that would be a different Different conversation I just read a study published by from Seoul Korea. I don't know they probably have a strong team. On this It was published in American Journal of rain and allergy. Three hundred fourteen where the sixteen three patients with an awesome. Yeah compose nineteen males and forty four females age range of forty nine point five years. They found an eighty percent subjective improvement of us on the year but importantly they found that female gender Resulted in a more favorable talk nonstick science at the female gender and longer follow up and some of them could up to two years to show benefit And you're right. In order to study I've read the mentioned that these patients with upper respiratory tract infection who had an Ulta many Improved in fact the third of many actually a third of them improved in such six months and the recovery was higher in younger patients compared to all the patients for the same reason that you mentioned that with age we lose our factory neurons And that might be resulting in a slower recovery and an older age and I saw some studies indicating drink as a possible treatment but the double bone blind study was had showed no benefit and there was a German study which was living by the pushing review. The study mentioned the Glutamate Receptor Antagonists Cavalry Had shown some promise. But I I don't think went much further than that. But these are tough times and I think with the newer treatment plants coming for covert is the FDA is looking at CDC is in the process of studying and probably approving. It's possible that some of these off legal drugs like zinc could be tried But I absolutely agree with you that Those two training program might tell at this point. Do you have Because we wind up Any other comments for Your group in particular in the world and and because this board cats was to Physicians Surgeons everyone that. I think the point that you made that we have got to be careful exposing ourselves when we see somebody with an awesome. Yeah and take it in the same symptom complex same protection as covert enrolled with it rather than get too excited about the world needs to know about an awesome and how to approach this symptom. You gotta be careful in protecting ourselves. That you don't get lost in the process of mark taking precautions when we see a patient of announcement any Putting parts brand. Yeah just in the last week with the American Academy of Older -nology and some other N. T. societies worldwide. Like I said there's been a lot more. awareness of the potential risk of EMT's and other providers being exposed or getting infected with Cova because of the high viral load in the nose. So for anyone who's seen someone with upper respiratory symptoms. Please be aware of the HIGH RATE OF VIRAL. Load coming out of the nose and then There are some health systems here in the. Us that are starting to use smell loss as one of their screening symptoms. And fortunately the the press in New York Times. Cnn and others are spreading. The word about this symptom of smell off really is just come out in the last week These studies have a prevalence of it thirty percent potentially and then people reporting online and so I think the word is getting out. But I'd like to see more people using this potentially as a screening tool especially for those mild symptoms people maybe a symptomatic carriers. Maybe not quarantining because they don't have a fever and don't have a cough and so. I appreciate that you're having this episode and raising awareness so that more people are aware of smell or tastes loss as a potential symptom of covert even without the other more significant symptoms. So if you've been talking about and mostly uncovered nineteen Dr at an O'Brien Gerald -nology at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. Thank you for your time. Erin I would like to reemphasize number one and knots me out and loss of taste could be presented as cinematic cases of covert and this would require taking and and Cleaning for Colbert. We do not know how long they would have the symptoms but from our experience with other patients who have in us to post by syndrome. It's could last as long as six months to a year or even two years so what we need to do is support them mentally and emotionally during this phase and also recommend about the all Saturday trainings. Brian mentioned. We will continue to bring you updates on the situation as they rent unfold. If you have enjoyed the male clinic talk walked out deep fried and to you next week.

One NA member FDIC, Michael Georgio. From the newsroom if the financial times in London, I'm season blimp. Som Britain's high streets are in crisis. Struggling retailers are forced into bankruptcy and the property market has a huge excess space patriot Dunkin's discusses what has caused this. And if there is a remedy with Judith Evans, our property correspondent, and Jonathan Ely are Rita correspondent. So Jonathan Devon's is the latest in a string of retailers to fail as customers desert, the traditional high street shops have bad are things at Dem's. Pretty bad at debit and have been for some time. I think the customer offering has not really kept pace with fashion, and they have the problem common to many retailers wants owned by private equity groups in that they have an enormous store estate far too much space that's letter high rents and on very inflexible leases. So in some cases that tied in for twenty thirty years with no real prospect of reducing that commitments except by doing CVA process. Which is of course, what they have done. This is the company voluntary arrangement, which is basically managed liquidation in the sites is a form of insolvency. Yes. That basically imposes some losses on creditors. If seventy five percents or more of creditors votes in favour for its in reality. The critics who lose out tend to be landlords who have to accept reduce rents and store closures short notice and for the most part of the creditors gets off Scot free. Although interestingly in this case, Deb. Says also asked that local authorities in some cases, take a bath on the business rates that they receive are they likely to succeed in that. And how Representative is this of what is happening. More broadly on the highstreet. So I think very important points to make about CVS is whether they succeed or not depends on whether there's a restructuring plan on a business plan to go with it. It's no good just cutting your rental obligations and your costs for few years in the hope that that will save business. If you're products offering is not resonating with customers, and your sort of fashions tired and your stores are in the wrong place. CVA will not help you much. You have to have another plan on his for that reason. Many companies did see as ended up failing. Anyway, we'll withstood a sceviour, and then failed HFS did toys a roasted and you'll prediction on Dublin's. I think they will carry on for another perhaps year. Oh, two. I think I would give it fifty fifty whether they go into administration again. And if that does happen, then I think Mike Ashley will buy them out. It. Well, we'll hold that prediction. Mike Ashley echoes is slightly controversial founder of the sports direct retail chain and owner of Newcastle. United football club Judith, just to bring you in here as jumped in with saying, obviously, one of the big victims in this whole type of process is the landlord sector if you like the CVA structure that is used by retailers to restructure. Their leases can be pretty penal for the landlords of the landlords. Brought this upon themselves by being too greedy up to that. Well, that's one point of view, and I would say that landlords are rapidly discovering that they're in a new world. I'm they had previously been able to sign these leases which would loss for decades, which would include up would only rent reviews on which to some degree meant that they could just kind of sit back and watch the money roll in. They would do a credit check on the tenant, and then to some degree that was my work done. That's not the case anymore. And indeed this rush of CVS has really couldn't question the value of leases in the value of retail properties. Because suddenly you can't look to this income stream in. The future almost from any store, given the level of the evils of the moment. So I think there's a sense in the property industry that this current meltdown has quite a bit further to go. There are very few shopping centers trading at the moment, our record, low number of shopping centers, changing hands, and those that are changing hands off and actually as redevelopment opportunities to be demolished and transformed into housing. So I think there's a sense that we're quite far from that market bottoming out and even the landlord which owns some of the best shopping centers in the country listed groups like HAMAs on an into a kind of wrestling with what to do with their future trading at steep discounts to the book value of their assets. So it's not looking pretty we had the former chairman of amongst Spencer. Robert swan all telling us he thought he was even bleaker than your assessment here hero this. I think suggesting that the future. Yes. There is a future for the British tree. If you like, but that is going to have to be a total resetting of both rent. It's and rates to bring in Jonathan's pointed about cancels taking bath as well. And that this is going to be felt over the next year or two with a pretty steep decline in level of rents that landlords are going to be able to charge. I think that's really true. I mean to some extent rent figures who is message debate anyway because landlords will quietly give rent free periods and all the perks. That mean, the leases aren't quite what they appear to be on the outside. But I think now that the sort of avalanche has begun a lot of landlords are switching to turn over based rents which means they're learning receive money based on how well the store is doing which immediately gives them much more kind of skin in the game as it were and makes them more responsible for making sure that consumers actually walk through the door and rates has been a lot of disquiet among traditional high street retailers about the way in which rates are charged. These of course, are the taxes are imposed based on the rentable value of the properties that the retail is used and those who complain about it say that this isn't fair in an online. Fine shopping world where those competitors don't have to pay those kinds of taxes. Do you think the government is gonna listen to this argument that there needs to be a big shakeup Jonathan I think it will go through the motions of listening. But I don't think it will actually do much. And there are thirty billion reasons why that is the case, and those all the thirty billion pounds that business rates raises in revenue each year of which about quarter comes from retail. There are lots of problems with the business rate system. It is very archaic. It's quite a sort of feudal tax. But I think it's also fats points out that there are plenty of people doing perfectly well on the high street despite their exposures of business rates so companies like next prime Mark JD sports, or even humbled w h Smith, they all have things in common. They have very well managed space. They turn that leases. They retain lots of flexibility in their state, and they seem to produce and sell what people wants, and I think if you do that you can overcome the obstacles in your way, an S to the fan. Issue between online and offline operators. I think that's the piece of a red herring. I think that basically the cost structure of online retail is completely different to that of bricks and mortar retail, so yes, they pay far less in business rates, but they spend more on things like affiliate marketing customer acquisition, and logistics and fulfillment than a traditional bricks and mortar retailer would what about the social side of. This Judith does being a reason exemple of Kakoty on the east coast of Scotland whereas shopping center was put up for auction with the reserve price of one pound doesn't suggest that there's a great vision for that location. What are the solutions? He talked about some examples of shops being redeveloped into housing, but is that going to be a widespread solution? Well, that's sort of best case scenario. I mean, there are places like Maidenhead threes amaze constituency where shopping center recent eve fell into receivership, but is expected to be redeveloped partially or holiest homes. And that's a prosperous can meet a town where there's loads of demand. But I think communities like Colby have kind of deeper problems, and there's not necessarily huge demand for housing there on the problems that are goes deeper than simply, oh, we've got one too many shopping centers and its those places where I think we really have to us deep questions about what a high streets four. And also, what does the process of urban is Asian mean for these smaller aging communities, one of the social element? Jonathan is having an employer. The retail sector is is it really a significant part. They call me. Yes. So according to the retail directly employs about three million people in the UK that doesn't include people like truck drivers and cleaners who are sort of indirectly dependence on the industry an as retail goes through this structural transformation. The number of jobs falls every year. So last year around seventy thousand people lost their jobs in retail, according to the British retail consortium now, a large number of those jobs will be probably fairly low paid. Many of them will be part time and many of them will be done by women. And so they don't get anything like the political attention, for instance, that is focused on jobs say port Talbot. Steelworks in Wales were about four thousand people work, or for instance, the Honda Carfax Rian, Swindon, whereabout three and a half thousand people work. So the absolute number those facilities much much smaller than the number of people who are losing their jobs every year in retail. We've been talking about the UK high streets and the pressure on retailers clearly those pressures of felt globally on traditional high street shops. Are you seeing the kind of situation that we've been describing here in the UK across Europe and parts of the world beyond Europe. Or is there something unique going on here? I think the same underlying precious our presence elsewhere in the world. So the shift of what might be termed functional shopping to the internet, the trend towards more sort of experiential shopping people have a day out rather than just going buying new shirts. Cetera. I think it's particularly pronounced though in the UK for three reasons. One is that we are in the vanguard of the shift in online shopping all rights of online shopping is basically one of the highest in the world. And you also have a great deal of property markets. Volatility in the UK property is very financial is d- has lots of data touch to it. Prices. Go up and down. We're all obsessed with prices. And I think when so many things tied to prophecy values such business race that creates an awful lot of financial pressure on retailers. When property prices are high and demand for the products. They sell is in some cases low. So we can expect the volatility to continue thing. That's probably a fair prediction Jonathan Judy. Thank you very much. That was Patrick Jenkins. Philip Green fashion empire crumbles
"Hello. From the newsroom, the financial times in London. I'm Suzanne blimp, Sam, and this is knees Infocus, where we offer our insights into the global news stories that matter the high street fashion. Empire of Philip green is on the rocks. The UK retail I king has secured creditor support for three overhaul that's involve rent reductions store, closures, and to having of the company's pension deficit reduction payments, but will this be enough to save the business? Mafia Vinson discusses this question with Jonathan Ford and Jonathan Ely. Tell us a bit about Philip green and his fashion empire. How many stores all there in which are the best known brands? So the empire was put together from two big acquisitions that have Sears in one thousand nine hundred nine and nuts of Arcadia in two thousand and two Arcadia is, of course, the one that gives its name still to surf Phillips fashion empire four fifths of the revenues a made in the UK and Ireland from about five hundred sixty stores and they're all so concessions in department stores like Dem's and in some branches of Tesco now by far the best known of the Browns is top shop which counts for more than half of the sales, but there are also a series of smaller brands Burton, Wallis Dorothy Perkins, miss Selfridge Evans, being the main ones if my memory of back issues of vogue serves me talk shop was until. Recently regarded as something of a success, celebrities plumber into be associated with it gained to catwalk shows, and green was the person who is credited with getting it. But high profile on that level of success knighted for it. How is this managed to go wrong? So there are many causes a knife fits early into two buckets, if you like one is the sort of external factors over which Philip had relatively little control. And the other is the things that he did have influence and control over now outside his control was quite, simply the competition, much better. So back in two thousand and five when he was knighted, boo. A fashion retailer sells online and we'll turn over over a billion pounds this year did not even exist. And there's a whole series of those types of businesses have emerged who misguided, they sauce, people like that prime has really up to his game, h and. Am has opened hundreds of stores in the UK Zara has expanded quite aggressively in the UK. And also consumes have become much more kind to dispose to ordering clothing online something that seems a long time ago now but if you go back to the early noughties people were saying, oh, people will never order clothing, on my because they'll want to try it on. Well, they do try on. They try on at home and send back the bits they don't want, and then the things that he has done wrong. I think he basically took a lot of money out of Arcadia in the early noughties then famously paid his wife for one point two billion pound dividend didn't really invest enough act into the businesses that week online websites in their whole logistics, regarded as behind competitors and along with many other retailers from the sort of pre incidents era, they're finding now that they've simply got too many shops. So now so Philip finds himself as you say, with shops needing to close some of them leading to. Have the rent reduced on the others. Under the so-called company, voluntary arrangement. Can you just explain exactly what a VA is? And why he needed Sarah CVA is a peculiarly British form of insolvency that basically gives the company a window of opportunity to reach an agreement with its creditors to reduce its payments, and his overheads, and therefore is obligated, and actually any credits can be compromised under a CVA. But when it comes to retailers, it's almost invariably the landlords. That's are they face cuts to rents of between twenty five and fifty percents on about one hundred ninety four out of the five hundred also stores. They are the very significant aspects of this sceviour is that there is an agreement with a pension regulator Arkadiusz pension fund is about five hundred million pounds in deficit and the company had been making annual payments. To try and close that gap miss reached an agreement with the regulators, where it will reduce the payments, and so Philip, and his family will make good the difference, and that agreement with the pension regulates. The has very important political and legal ramifications should anything wrong with Arcadia further down the line, they still have to close certain outlets which talks about top shop, earlier, which other stores are going to be affected, or the CVA all of them all the chain. So twenty three stores will shots within the next year and that seems like quite low number out of five hundred sixty six but the reality, according to people in the commercial property world is the final number will be many more than not possibly into three figures that's because lots of stores are coming off lease anyway, and because over the three appeared of the CVA, there are lots of opportunities sort of written into the terms for either the landlords author Arcadia to end Elise early enclose a store. And that has raised questions really over the future of some of the other brands, we know already, the Evans miss Selfridge are going to move to a more wholesale type business model. So most of their stores will close one wonders how long things like Dorothy Perkins Wallis and Burson might lust because there's one marketing expert said to me last week if these stores didn't exist, would you go out of your way to invent them to have turn this round, if east Browns are not long for this world, even if he's able to have a little bit more success with top shop is there really a turnaround strategy Novus, while it's fair to say that many people think there isn't that what there is is too, vague into threadbare. So we know that he's basically plan to invest hundred thirty five million pounds over three years, roughly split half and half into improving the stores and improving the website and the online. Logistics the problem with that smaller a to really hundred thirty five million over three years is forty five million pounds a year next which has around the same number of stalls spends one hundred fifty million every year. Hey sauce, spend two hundred million every year and marks and Spencer is currently spending three hundred and fifty million every year so you can see that those figures are a long way short of what rivals suspending and the other thing is that who is going to oversee all this. So Philip has basically pulled the shots at Katya for many years. Most of the people in senior management positions, there are his key lieutenants. A lot of people are saying to me was the new blood was the fresh thinking, where the new ideas it's a question marks about turnaround strategy. A many people even opposed, the CVA plan itself certain landlords didn't support it in the U and are here. Now that some American landlords loss legal challenge against top shops banker. Obse in the US this opposition to what he's trying to do. How serious as you correctly say the CVA in the UK only got through by the skin of his teeth is the first time that we've really seen London's push back hard against one of this the business in the US is slightly different. Arcadia is putting its US subsidiary into administration and the landlords. They're eleven tops shop stores in the United States and the landlords of those stores are upset that assets belonging to top shop in the United States might be repatriated to the U K without due legal process in America, the Americans concrete believe that the CVA process in the UK has no recourse to the courts is a creditor agreed process compared to the sort of chapter eleven format in the United States. They find that horrifying. I don't think it's too serious in the sense that it's a small number of stores in the small number of dollars and the administration CVA pro. This is all in England and Wales under English law. But any form of legal entanglements in America is likely to be expensive, and it's just another expensive distraction that the company could do without the stage. Certainly sounds like that. If I can turn to Jonathan Ford for many listeners, there will be echoes of Seville AP's past business difficulties here. It's not the first business that he is steered to the brink of bankruptcy. You covered the case of British Home stores in quite some detail a few years ago. Can you just remind us what happened there? Yeah. Well as a strong sense of deja view battle, it is, I think game back three four years. Philip green had a very similar problem slightly different in that he himself was a landlord of a great deal of British humor SOS shops. But he got himself into a situation where the business was declining. And had a big pension fund deficit. And he basically was, obviously, not in a mood to invest more of his personal fortune in turning the business round. So he found a buyer in the shape of an entrepreneur called Mr. Chapelle, Dominic Chapell, who owned it for about a year, didn't pay very much for it didn't really put much money into it spent most of that year, I think negotiating with the various creditors. The pension fund and the landlord. And in the end, the whole thing fell into insolvency and Philip green had to come back to the table at the insistence of the pension fund regulator, and a lot of politicians in parliament, who felt he had a responsibility to make good the losses in the pension fund to protect some of the pensioners, who would otherwise lose out and indeed. That's what he did after little bit of wriggling on the hook and shouting. So there are. Are real parallels. I think there's a broader parallel, which is if you look at the long sweep of the retail career Philip green, what you see is an entrepreneur, who essentially took over a large number of retail properties around the turn of the millennium in a kinda great rush. He bought one after another. He bought British tools in two thousand dollars. I think he had bought Sears a few years before. And basically, he was on the expansion path he timed it well in two specs one he took over Justice, the cost of manufacturing product fell very sharply because of the opening up with us sort the Chinese market for production. And indeed, he had a very close relationship with a man called Richard carrying now best known for the ownership of various restaurants. But in those days was somebody who pioneered, quite a lot of the practices of outsourcing production to China, and he was very clever about bringing in closing cutting the cost. Of the sourcing of products and getting them source quite quickly and basically selling them at low prices. But of course, prices that were significantly more profitable than they had been when you made close in Europe, the second thing, I think he did was he had very keen understanding certainly in the case of VHS about the possibilities, if you like for stripping properties out of retail chains in the case of HSE sold a number them, to himself or his family company and separated them from the retail chain itself. And for time that was a very lucrative strategy. Of course, we can now see with Arcadia that, you know, the fortunes of retail properties than the retailers, who use them in many ways linked. So you call stave off things forever. And I think the other side of it apart from what Jonathan has mentioned about online and the way in which the competition is caught up. I think the truth is that the magical story about Chinese costs is not quite what it was. And I think there are the questions. About the way that retailers conduct their business to do with the kind of sustainability of their products. Do we want the same disposable fashion, and ident- claim to have the answers to those? But I think those are things which Philip green with his very simple. Very clear strategy is probably not the best man to answer his strategy. Also, though, in both the case of VHS and Arcadia Bill suddenly, his personal rushing could be described as extracting as much as he could in dividends for himself and his family while in both instances, not investing enough back into the business and certainly not putting enough money into the pension funds. Would that be a fair criticism broadly? I think it's an arguable that his strategy was one in which money tended to flow one way out of the properties once he bought them, he took very large dividends be h s I'm more familiar with very large dividends out be h s. Then when HSS started to get into difficulty because it was under invested he made a brief attempt to put some money in to see if he could turn it round. But when it became clear that it was bit more stop in. We went back to just sort of hunkering down. And I think in terms of the pensions will, obviously lots of companies one needs to be fair here. A lot of companies across the spectrum have got problems with pension deficits. I think the fact that you had this tycoon who earned say much of the high street, who had effectively extracted so much personal unit money in the form of dividends paid off shore to his family in, Monaco did put him in a position where he was certainly an easy target. If you like if people wanted to look for a situation where somebody with a responsibility for large number of workers was released standing behind the promises, and I think that's where he came unstuck and his personal rep. Tation officers suffered with the allegations over the tax avoidance will the tax advantage jurisdictions is reputation, also potentially being damaged by more recent allegations of sexual harassment in the US, which he denies but will nonetheless, go to court this week. Isn't this just the kind of thing that his business does not need? Now, if it's trying to turn this around. Yeah. I think that's true. I think he was a great, showman. And he was very good at creating a sensitive site. -ment rand NASA closing, he sold. He had friendships with a lot of sort of very famous models. He did London fashion. We, he was sort of larger than life figure. I think all of this, you know, the criticism is faced demands for the removal with knighthood as you say these accusations in the US. They didn't make you very much want to strut around in public and make a big noise about yourself. And I think one of the things that has been noticeable. Is he has pulled back from a lot of these public appearances, I think last year? Top shop didn't do a big London fashion week thing with all the models. And I think the other thing is obviously, this is taken a bit of a bite out of his personal fortune. So he may be a little more anxious about spending the money, just finally, if this CVA plan we're not to work if top shop disappears, from the high street. What does that mean for the retail sector and for for the greens legacy? Well, it obviously Ernest she's legacy of the whole thing, disappears. I think once again, to be fair, we are going through incredibly turbulent time on the high street, and I think a number of quite well known brands may not be around in a few years time if these sort of conditions continue, personally, I just feel top shopping away was very much a creature of a certain time at time, this sort of very cheap quick to market, high street version of couture. Had its moment, whether it will continue to have its moment, or whether it will be done in different ways. I they. And charleston. How would you view a failure of the CVA in the possible disappearance of top shop, from the highstreet forever? I think in business terms, it would be very significant because of Sevilla previous position as the self proclaimed king of the high street wants a very big player. What would it mean to consumers? I suspect with the passage of time, very, very little almost sadly, so perhaps, I mean, it's ten years more or less in Woolworth's disappeared from the high streets overnight. Few people talk about that anymore. CNA pulled out of the UK, nobody talks about that anymore. Mop Lynn toys, arose. These are all brands have disappeared, and people scarcely seem to notice. And maybe that's the point that the Browns had become less relevant to the point that it didn't really matter if they were very. That was my Vincent number editor talking to Jonathan Ford city editor, and Jonathan Ely retail correspondent, thanks for listening. The military is carrying out air raids against civilians. Some have tried to flee across the border to thailand but the government there has pushed him back and the blood should. They are trying to escape escalated during the weekend sounds from the streets. The military opened fire on protesters near young gone. More than one hundred people were killed bringing the death toll since the coup started to over five hundred tom. Andrews is the u n special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in myanmar. Tom andrews good morning. Good morning your role as special rapporteur means that you are the fact finder for the un in myanmar. What is happening in that country now. Well not It's just getting worse and worse by the day. We had an another fifteen people at least killed yesterday. We now know that over. Five hundred are dead. At least thirty of them are children. We expect that death toll to rise because several people yesterday were severely injured. We don't expect them to survive their Their injuries so things are bad. You're getting worse. After the killing of more than one hundred people by the military on the weekend you issued a statement that ended with a plea. These are your words. The people of myanmar need the world's support words are not enough. It is past time for robust coordinated action. What action do you want to see now. Well the security council is meeting this morning new york and they have a me and more on the agenda the ideal situation would be for them to act to establish tough strong coordinated sanctions cut the revenue. And the and all the weapons Go at flowing into myanmar right now. cut revenue. That's an access to revenue from businesses. That are doing business in myanmar new businesses in me bar. And they're conglomerates and then refer the case to the international criminal court Starting meetings with investigations and prosecutions. Of what i think is just increasingly clear that these crimes against humanity being committed. All those things can happen either to the action for the un security council when they meet today. Short of that country's could gather together. Coordinate their efforts together and work as a coordinated whole of countries who are willing to stand up for the people of me if you believe the crimes against humanity are being committed and this is happening in real time in front of our eyes. Why hasn't there been more significant action already from the international community man. I don't know i don't know. I think that the case sport strong coordinated action could not be more clear could not be more compelling you know we've heard Words of condemnation in fact just the other day to Secretary general What is what is needed. Now is eight and his words. A firm unified resolute. International response That is exactly why but we have yet to see that firm resolute international response But help me understand that. You say you don't know but i mean this is. The eve said these are crimes against humanity. Why is it that the international community would not take more decisive action again. I i don't know what i do. Know is that increasingly. The international community is responding. They're taking steps Just the other day the us Stopped adhering to a trade pact established in two thousand thirteen a few days before that they established sanctions on not just individuals in the military but their military businesses and their conglomerates There are steps being taken into right direction but they're not coordinated steps. They're not linked. We have over forty different varieties of sanctions for example. We need to coordinate them. Connect them now. We've had a call from the other countries The association of southeast asian nations with indonesia in the lead Say we need an emergency summit to address this crisis. I think that's a great opportunity for countries to gather together with the neighbors of me and more and established firm clear coordinated sanctions regime. It hasn't happened yet. But we're pushing as hard as we can for this kind of action to be takes. The un security council is touted as a powerful body that can take action in these types of crises but we know from past experiences some of the key players at the table specifically russia and china often will not take action. Is it possible for the security council to overcome these impasses well. It is Mad but they have to try In order to overcome. And i would i would like and i know leaders of civil disobedience movement and lee representatives of the elected leadership In the more are calling for action now. Of course you put your finger on it. We always face the prospect of a veto From china or russia or both and that has delayed or actually stopped attempts at bolton security council. I think what should happen. Frankly is that there should be a a a very clear. Measure put on the floor of the security council. Let everyone stand up and be counted one way or another. That's their job. And if anyone wants to veto or vote against it okay. That's fair right. But then we know who they are. We know why they've taken that action. And then we can then to the rest of the world wants to stand with the people that we can move on and do that. I think that the problem here is is that the fact that there could be resistance has become an excuse for inaction and so in that in the face of that inaction and facing the prospect of vito how relevant is the security council. Well in this case not very They're getting briefings They're they're making statements Baby after even condemn the cool they condemn the violence but not the cool So they are increasingly irrelevant when it comes to taking concrete specific action that i think is necessary. That's a pretty damning statement from the un special rapporteur. Well i'll tell you The inaction is damning It is extraordinarily frustrating to be communicating with people on the ground every day carrying their frustration. Their anger their fear. I mean this is a reign of terror going on here. We have these marauding troops now going through neighborhoods destroying property and then shooting randomly people's homes. I mean the people in their homes some sleeping A a young boy was was was killed literally in his father's arms This is terror. That's going on Point blank range killings that we've seen in into the into crowds of but now the random killings and the terrorism being inflicted on these neighborhoods. This is horrible horrible. Matt and and my job is to report. My job is to recommend. So i'm reporting. Things are horrible. Getting worse in my recommendation is to take action. You have a long history. With countries that have undergone upheaval countries like cambodia and serbia ukraine yemen. Are there parallels that you have seen in past that would offer some sort of roadmap to how to deal with what you are describing in myanmar. I think that from all of my experience. The key is is focused and tenacity. Starting on the ground i think clearly the way this is going to ultimately be resolved for the good is in the hands of the me and more people and they are showing extraordinary courage. Creativity and tenacity I just learned This morning that They've had to shut down the milwaukee. They can't run the lottery because people are boycotting We've had one hundred twenty of your colleagues and television and radio state television and radio in myanmar have been dismissed because they've turned and join the civil disobedience movement. It's extraordinary what's going on in the ground but what is necessary or those courageous people To be able to look to the international community Not for a miracle But for support. And and that is what they've yet to receive and i think in these other cases there has been to one degree or another Engagement from the international community and support from the international community But in all cases it's really really up to the people who are on the ground end up fighting for their futures. You mentioned that. The united states has stopped trade with myanmar Ultimately is resolving this crisis and stopping. The bloodshed is that going to fall more. Broadly on the shoulders of the united states. I think the united states can play a critically important whole a coordinational. Of course there are those in me and martyr would like nothing. Better than cd. Eighty second airborne Parachuting into me and more to to save the day that is that is not going to happen. but what can happen. Is that the us with capacity for For leadership it's connectivity to nations around the world as well as its economic capacity It's really in a very important position to to move forward so we're encouraging The biden administration to to move quickly. I testified before the senate foreign relations committee they're east asia subcommittee last week. The administration on that day announced a new set of sanctions on on businesses. And what we're hoping is that the administration will step forward now and Coordinate play leadership role in coordinating the efforts of countries who are willing to step up and put pressure on the regime. Just finally before. I let you go. In the days. Following the coup with activists and journalists in myanmar who in some ways predicted. This said that history has shown that The military leaders will crackdown and crack down hard. What are you most concerned about given what you have seen what you describe not just over the weekend but in the last twenty four hours. What are you most concerned about about a bath that i think this this could get more and more horrible as the days go on. I think that this This military hunter has demonstrated that. There's there's no limit to its brutality. these are the same. The the person leading the entire country right now was in charge of the forces engaged in the mass atrocity crimes against the inga ethnic minority in two thousand seventeen. This person Is now running the country. So it what i fear. Most of all is Continued assault with me and more And increase perhaps even a dramatic increase in the number of people who are injured or killed. Tom andrews. it's good to speak with you. Thank you thank you matt tom. Andrews is u n special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in myanmar. He was in washington dc. I'm now i add host of ideas in this age of click bait and online. Shouting ideas is a meeting ground for people who want to deepen their understanding of the world. Join me as we crack. Open a concept to see how it plays out over place and time and how. It matters today from the rise of authoritarianism to the history of cult movies. No idea is off. Limits ideas is on the cbc. Listen or wherever you find your podcasts. In nine hundred ninety five a college student disappeared on a trip across the. Usa reported him missing right away but they wouldn't take it so his mother started investigating. Got the case file. I started going through and saw people. That wasn't interviewed. I joined this mother search for justice or you recording us am someone knows something season six available now while the world watches it is the people of myanmar who continue to suffer among zarni is a burmese activist who now lives in the uk. He's also one of the founders of forces of renewal southeast asia. It's a group advocating for democracy in the region. Arnie hello to you alu- back to you. Thank you what do you make of what you've just heard about the un's involvement or lack thereof in the situation unfolding mean mar-. Well the burmese. Public opinion of is is such that We are sick of hearing the word of security council because we have seen security council fail and fail again. It is failing. Now this is the body that has failed in. Every single will crisis of any significance not just in burma but palestine g. men syria In this case in our case of china and rusher of that to you know evil or bad guys because they have proven themselves to be very reliable protector of burmese genocidal regime. But you know china itself is a. It's a genocidal Criminal state According to usa department report on leaguers. And so you know. We have a situation of the to look at the at you politics. Broadly this security council. That is set up to essentially maintain peace and stability around the world. is failing because veto powers not discharging their responsibility. Responsibly asked about the situation in myanmar. The country has been under military rule before. But what is making what you're seeing right now. What's different about this moment. Well because the national armed forces has morphed into for all intents and practical purposes nothing but an armed terrorist group. I mean that's not you know at a hyperbole. That came straight from their strategic advisory council or minimum mater of two former very reputable. You in fact finders. Heading the un factfinding mission that found near ma to have committed genocide against hinder and also from Tom andrews Predescessor the south korean professor young believe they just released this statement Three days ago after the military went on killing spree killing over one hundred food forty people on the day that was to commemorate the anti fascist resistance during the second world war and so we have a situation where you know. The national army was behaving no different from isis. Or dash or book. O'hara and your. We've we've on tiktok The chinese platform soldiers open the same. We're going to rape your daughters or we're gonna use this weapon. Look at this weapon. We're going to shoot you in the head at night so this sense of impunity by the troops even concealing their identities and say and terms ride. The troops are marooning. It's like you know what you know. This is a situation on the ground that that is. What distinguishes this military regime from previous waves of You know the coups we launched by their predescessor. Would you have a terrorist regime. Would you expect in the face of of everything. That has been documented by tom and and elsewhere. What you've been scrubbing. Would you expect the citizens who have been protesting the coup to back down if the threat of further military action is waved over their heads. No i don't wanna. I'd i told bbc almost two months ago in the early days of the protest. I i think we have a radically different society. If we have a radically different regime the society that matches in its resolve not to be put back under the boot and be terrorized into submission. You know this is going on for two months. I it's still new Basically headline news. I mean this is unprecedented. We have a societal revolution society wide. Nationwide against what they see as the essential threatened you know on the twenty sixth of february at the united nations general assembly. The extraordinarily the burmese ambassador sitting ambassador refusing to take orders from the new regime and calling the regime a. b. existential threat. And so you know that we have a situation where the the the military staged a coup terrorize people but they have been denied and a functioning state because ninety percent of the state bureaucracy have been brought to a grinding halt to by civil servants. And we've got a new generation. That is so creative in opposing this regime in the most peaceful and disciplined way so every single day like you know they. The regime focus on killing people in one city to cities and forty other cities of protesting today as well. I mean the regime brought in a cnn team using its israeli The canadian be based in montreal. And so today. The people out through testing and that the military cutter electricity supplies and issued a statement to say security troops. Don't kill too much in effect. You've said that china needs to be persuaded that it's not in that country's national interest to back the military regime in myanmar. Who's going to do that convincing. Well i think the chinese will have to be persuaded them. So because you know we have The the the footy. I mean you don't want to be the enemy of forty five million people right next door where you have major interests such as eight hundred kilometer long natural guest and pablo the public seething with rage at china not The because china is financing. An all ming and enabling the the regime that is terrorizing the country and so that the public openly talk about blowing up chinese pipeline. That's a major alternative energy security out. For the chinese that fear conflict in the south china sea might blockade their regular flow of oil from saudi arabia and gulf states Through the straits of malakal. So that is one major item that china should be concerned about their fifty nine pumping stations along the eight hundred kilometer. Long twin pipeline. And you've fifty four million people that are seething with rage and how much security the this burmese regime could provide to protect the the pipeline and there are also other interests as well so it's extremely unwise and unstrategic for the chinese communist leadership to alienate fifty four million to try to keep the you know the terrorist regime on its side to protect its economic interest. I think only the burmese people can protect the chinese economic and other interests nor a extremely unpopular gang of terrorists in general's uniform with just a couple minutes left The united states. And we were talking about this with with tom. the state department in the. Us put a release yesterday saying that they condemn the widespread violations by burma's second security forces in the strongest terms. What's the role of the united states. In helping to end this. What the us role is extremely critical and the problem. Is you know in in in human rights situation so even genocidal situations you know. The great powers do not intervene at all on grounds of human rights unless like human rights protection of human rights coalesce or are in sync with their own core strategic interest and the protection of those. And so i think like once the us any other powers feels that its interests are at stake. Then we will see the situation where military intervention is possible. Likely at this point not yet a. We don't know we. We have a situation where you know the in the middle of Southeast asia one of the largest country is is is on the brink of a unprecedented level of civil a civil war and moss violence. We've got about fifteen different armed. Ethnic organizations gearing to fight and declaring their intended to intention to get involved protect the people. We've got hundreds of hundreds of young protesters who realize that in the face of a terroristic regime of nonviolence. It's not going to get them very far so they are undergoing military training. We you don't want another sceviour right in the middle of southeast asia this is everyone's interest to prevent burma from descending further into serious of the civil civil war that will have spillover crisis. Refugee flows and whatnot mugs. It's good to speak with you about this. And we will keep an eye on what is unfolding in myanmar. Thank you very much. thank you that. Arnie is a burmese activist.
