The Timothy Leary Conviction
"On january twenty first nineteen seventy former harvard professor and so called priest of lsd timothy. Leary was sentenced to ten years in prison on drug smuggling charges but in september of that year. The fifty year-old academic broke out of a san luis obispo facility with the help of the weatherman. The daring escape only added to the mystique of the man president. Nixon wants declared the most dangerous man in america. But just what made leery so dangerous. Well it might not surprise you. That richard nixon may have been exaggerating for his own political game according to authors. Bill minna tag. Leo and stephen l davis nixon's advisors suggested he find a public enemy to distract the public from his own flagging approval rating the war in vietnam and the struggling economy. They leary a prominent figure in the counterculture movement and because the former professor was a proud exponent of hallucinogenic drug use. The president's ir fit right in with his war on drugs narrative timothy leary was something of a self appointed spokesperson for the benefits of drug use. Which heat enjoyed since one thousand nine hundred sixty after an experimental magic mushrooms trip. The already noted psychologist became excited about the possibilities. Mushrooms and similar drugs had on the human brain during his tenure. At harvard he conducted academic experiments on the effects of hallucinogens. Drawing the attention and admiration of other notable nineteen sixties figures famed authors. Like gin berg and jack kerouac willingly participated in leary's experiments and it was perhaps their involvement that catapulted the professor onto the national stage before long leary was touring the country speaking about his research and reportedly brushing up against the rich and famous inevitably a backlash arrived. Leary's teaching colleagues criticized his experimentation with lsd. They believed research of that. Nature should be left to medical doctors not psychologists meanwhile psychology experts who once lauded leary's earlier work now made it clear that his drug centered experiments were less praiseworthy. Despite these blows leary insisted that taking lsd was quote a sacramental ritual one that could expand human consciousness. Harvard university did not agree and fired him in nineteen sixty three but by that stage leary had a new life. He was a counterculture touchstone for the masses and a legitimizing scientific voice in the pro drug movement. He rubbed shoulders with marilyn monroe and sang with john. Lennon and yoko ono in short he was a powerful voice advocating for drug use throughout the nineteen sixties. He even appeared before a senate committee to argue in favor of legislation. That would make it legal for adults to use hallucinogenic drugs. So when richard. Nixon assumed the presidency in nineteen sixty nine leary was squarely in his sights. Ostensibly nixon wanted to eliminate drug use in the country. Leary very much did not. That made him dangerous. So it's little surprise that when leary's appeal of his nineteen sixty five drug-smuggling conviction was overturned. The government wanted a second bite at the apple but any joy nixon and his cabinet might have felt in putting leary. Away was short lived using his network of contacts. The former professor escaped prison remaining on the run until nineteen seventy three when he was detained in afghanistan and sent back to the united states. There he was jailed in the notorious folsom. Prison and briefly befriended charles manson and though his sentence was for ten years leary was paroled in nineteen. Seventy six having served just three. It's a surprising twist day given that so many drug offenders imprisoned for decades on similar offenses then again timothy leary was famous and white which might have had something to do with his early release

The George Soros Saga: Antisemitism, Conspiracies, and Influence
"Billion-a-year Fillon therapist mega donor George Soros has long been the villain of conspiracy theories. He has also been a target of politicians and pundits on the right who resent his fierce opposition to George W Bush and Donald. Trump, they also object to his philanthropy support of liberal causes support most clearly defined by his mega donations. Earlier this month, the open society foundations, the ill philanthropic group founded by Mr Soros announced it would invest one hundred, fifty million dollars in grants for black lead, racial justice groups, and another seventy million toward local grants for criminal justice reform. The announcement came amid protests in the streets and calls for racial justice sparked by the murder of George. Floyd. Minneapolis those protests, some of which have turned violent have fuelled critics to view those donations as efforts to foment anarchy and back government corruption emily. Tamken. saw these critiques and conspiracy theories already building steam and two thousand sixteen which inspired her to research and write the influence. Of Soros, her latest Book Emily Welcome. Thank you so much for having me on the show so far listeners. Let's take a step back and start with WHO is George Soros not who the conspiracy theorists say he is but who is he really and what causes does he support and why? George. Is a Hungarian born American billionaire he is very influential in three realms the realm of finance, the rubber philanthropy, and the realm of politics in finance. He was a very famous and successful hedge fund manager. He's maybe the most famous and successful currency speculator in the history of finance, and then you know in the nineteen seventies after making a lot of money, he decides to start giving away some of that money to the cause of what he calls open society. The title comes the Name Open Society comes. From this book by Karl. Popper who was Soros's tutor at the London School of Economics and basically the premise of open society and its enemies is that this gross over simplification but basically, the premise is that you know neither you nor I can really know the truth. So what we're supposed to do is all of us together in a society come together and we discuss and debate, and we try to reach this perfect understanding and practice that's meant giving students scholarships. It's meant setting up a university in. It's meant you know after the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc in Suva Union paying for Internet for various government ministries and trying to connect people to information. He's also a big an influential figure in politics beginning in two thousand four. In the United States, he decided that he really wanted George W Bush out of office and became a major political donor. So I think you know I WANNA be careful to make clear that the political spending is separate from thirty but because he's this major philanthropic and also major political donor and because the political donations or not exclusively, but do tend to be four Democrats in liberal causes. I think that that colors the perception of some not just on the right but particularly, some people on the right in the United States. So source is a Hungarian. Jewish emigrant right tell us more about his upbringing and how it informed his philanthropy and political activism nineteen thirty Hungary is the Inter war period between World War One and World War Two prior to World War One Jews in the Hungarian part of the austro-hungarian Empire were more assimilated than many other Jews in Europe. They really saw themselves. Many of them saw themselves as Hungarian were part of the Hungarian national project report of this Lake Glittering Budapest life world we're one happens Hungary is on the losing side they lose a lot of their territory in the tree of and all, which is like the austro-hungarian version of the treaty of Versailles. And for a variety of reasons, the Jews are scapegoated for this. So you have these he's born into this world where you start having a Jewish quotas laws meant to persecute Jews, and this is. Even, before World War Two, his father has them changed their name from shorts to Soros to seem less obviously Jewish in this increasingly hostile environment his father had previously like escaped. Prison camp in Siberia during World War, one and made his way back to Hungary during the Russian civil war. So he knew something about survival. World to comes and there's there's not the occupation and there's the Arrow Cross which is like the Hungarian variant. He sees his father as this great protective figure who helped other people the father. was procured bull forged embargo documents of the Soros family and friends in front of friends could hide out is Christians during during the time, but he also he's persecuted for being Jewish he then after world, War Two is living under a certainly not the same kind of persecution but under a repressive oppressive socialist regime and I think that this is two things one, it makes this concept of society where we can all debate and discuss very attractive and I also think that for him because he was persecuted on the basis of his ethnicity religion. That inspired in him. The understanding that it was important to try to help whatever group was caught under the wheel at a given moment with this history and background in mind. IS IT ANTI Semitic to criticize Mr Soros and the causes he supports I'm not saying the criticizing Soros is. Anti Semitic I think he's done things that you can criticise part of the reason that I wrote this book is that it should be what he is actually done and the money that he's actually spent not money that he has never spent and thinks he has never going to do that to me is when it trips over into in antisemitic conspiratorial.

So he resolutely set about to try to find a new patron. He reconnected with the powerful people. He had met through his becoming a freemason it landed the foreign minister of France as his patron. He no shit then became a trustee of the first state lottery and one of its best ticket salesman which earned him his own fortune, which he used to travel the best circles in Paris, pretending to have sorcerer powers and also continuing to seduce nearly everyone around him. So ladies, call him Powerball. We'll say his credit by the end of it. He did find that one way to be a successful gambler. Casanovas pretended to be an occultist numerology and an alchemist which actually made him a rather hot commodity. And he was a hell of a good liar. So became even more wealthy, bilking fools with this nonsense. And well, this was all kinds of fun Cazenove wasn't done yet. Because it was then that he became a spy and a real estate developer in Moscow, a must. I never met Cazenove. But if I did he signed an NDA of which. I just want to back up and be super clear here pretending to be an occultist numerology or alchemist is being an occultist numerology. I know Calcio vote was sent to Dunkirk on his first spying mission. Although Wikipedia doesn't say much about what he actually did. As a spy it most of involved a necessity to employ his generous fucking and gambling skills because from all accounts. It was a great success, and he was paid very well for the work. And at the start of the seven years war casanovas was called upon his service country by making said country a bunch of money in Amsterdam by selling bonds being casting over he managed to turn a fat profit in Amsterdam growing rich enough to buy a silk Manufactory. In fact, he made so much money that he was offered French citizenship and a pension if he would turn his talent at getting rich quick to the advantage of the finance ministry, Cazenove declined a love Arabic. Bit calm, man. I want to come on here. And he was like, no, thanks, France. If there's one nation out their recruiting rape, econ men. I know Cazenove probably should've taken that pension because it turns out that he was a horrible horrible businessman. He quickly ran his company into the ground took on enormous amounts of debt and spent most of his wealth unle- as on with his female workers who he referred to as his harem pretty much. This was madman in a silk pajama factor. Right. So giant liar. Horrible businessmen. Ran the company the ground became a spy hate off a bunch of women. He fucked. You're saying this is Trump but with like slightly more consent. Debt into Botchwey finally caught up to casanovas. He was thrown once more into prison. Don't tease me, Tom. Sorry, man. This time only for four days before the marquee intervened. And he was again released. Okay. That's going to be so much funnier and archives. I like to plan a lot of seeds like that. Now, the problem is that at this point is patron had been dismissed by king Louis the fifteenth and casanovas had made enough enemies fucking everyone's wives and daughters. It was once again forced to sell everything he had and try another spy mission in homes tough gig to spy in Holland. You're sneaking around and clicking and those goddamn wooden shoes. You know? You got to go back to your superiors going like, okay? I'm pretty sure they're gonna schwartman Borgen. That's not making this language up to fuck with us. And I'm not convinced that all the lineup. You're walking perfectly with the person you're spying on. I like spy in Holland sounds kind of amazing, but it didn't work out for casanovas whose mission failed, and he fled Hollandse Cologne. Then astute guards, and there he lost everything that remain of his fortune. And he was once more arrested for owning money pretty much to everybody in Europe. At this point, he managed to escape again and fled to Switzerland..

"On KFI. AM six forty four stimulating talk. Izzy Gary and Shannon, suits Christmas Eve two thousand eighteen we'll get to mega Santa tracker seven thousand cloud over the south land because California's dealing with a pair of scape desperadoes. The good news is that they're not. They're not a duo Monica. Rix is is on this story. When I first saw that headline Monica to inmates escaped prison. I thought. Oh, no, it's yeah. I thought for sure they're wearing New York together. Matt and sweat. Remember, the New York is. Yeah. I do remember that. Yeah. That was a couple of years ago. But and and and I had the same thought that you did. But one escaped on Saturday one escape Sunday and date the way that that officials are describing it it seems like they just walked away from his work camp, which raises a lot of questions about security there. But yeah, there are two skates inmates that law enforcement are looking for right now. Now, one guy is twenty seven the other one is in the early fifties. Now, this is the bizarre part about this is Edison, California Department of corrections and rehabilitation have launched an appeal to find inmates. It says minimum security inmates. Justin, Frank seven who escaped from Folsom. And then December twenty second of the other guy. Eric Levi was at the Fenner canyon conservation camp. These this is easier. Minimum minimum minimum prison camps, and they make they cut trails and stuff like that. But I didn't know Folsom had minimum security. Yeah. They were both working this sort of like a a working camp where they train inmates to do firefighting duties you remember during the wildfires. You know, just a couple months ago that you saw you know, a bunch of inmates on the sidelines. Just kinda you know, helping these firefighter dig or put out some fires are doing minimal firefighting duties this is where that comes from. They teach them how to dig fire lines. And and and just help out if there is an emergency in California. But during the time that they were at this camp, they just kind of wandered off. And they say there were minimum security because one guy was doing time for burglary, and he was getting out in June, which is which is the sad part because you only had a couple of months left. And now, he's probably gonna get a lot more time tagged onto a sentence. And then the other guy was serving a sixteen year sentence for burglary and excuse me for. Robbery and he had about four years left. But he's gonna get more time as well. Surely. And they don't wear when they're on those work crews that the guy who escaped from Fenner canyon the fifty two year old guy. They're not wearing like a GPS bracelet. Right. They are wearing like they're wearing I guess jail. Like, not like jumpsuit. They were wearing shirts and pants, but they are sort of drill GIO uniforms. They say CBC our prisoner on the back of them. So they have something to identify them. But they're not wearing tracker. So they're not easily track. That's why authorities are asking the public. If you know if you spot these guys, and if you see somebody wearing something like that, maybe call nine one one because these might be the guys and Fenner canyon. Conservation camp is is up in the mountains. It's just west of big pines and Wrightwood. So if you see a guy hitchhiking, and he has an orange jumpsuit, and he does not have a snowboard you might want to call nine one one. At least they'll pick them up. Yeah. Definitely don't pick them up, but they could be anywhere at this point because they did escape one escape, you know, about twenty four hours ago, the other one forty eight so you know, big could have wandered off. Maybe somebody did pick them up or they I mean, I don't want to speculate about about where they are. Or you know, what their plans are after but they could be anywhere in the LA county area. And again these are minimum security prisoners, but they're still guys that belonged behind bars. And I I just read a stat that said since nineteen seventy seven there have been other offenders that have lest these camps or community based programs and officials say that ninety nine percent of them were caught. So there is hope that they'll be caught. And they'll be caught soon, you know, because that. You're crossing a river that you can't go back from when you walk away from a sentence that maybe like the one guy was going to be out by June of twenty nineteen. What's he thinking that? He does something so stupid. He just bought himself mandatory extra five years or whatever. So. And it's sad. Because you probably likely they were going crazy, right? You're just indoors most of the day. And you're boxed in and then you get a little of freedom. And in this case it was worked ham, and they decided to make a run for it. But unfortunately, but they weren't thinking of the consequences. And if they get caught, and then, you know, all the sentence or the time that's added onto what could have been just another six months, the older guy looks like former character actor rod Steiger who was in in the heat of the night. He was the sheriff. That's the guy looks like the guy who walked away from Finnish. Terrible. He does those crazy. All right. Monica Rix, is is out there leading the manhunt have you formed a posse is not leading the manhunt, but I did make friends and we've got some pretty cool prison tabs going. All right. Well, keep us updated. 'cause you could make the news by catching him. Be a special. Murrow for you. I would like to be on the other side of that. I'd I'd like to report it instead of being a, but yeah. Hopefully, they'll get caught soon. All right. Thanks for giving us the update server one. Don't pick up people in orange jumpsuits. Monica Ricks have a have a happy Christmas. You too. They fray will be back into second. We will get a Santa update from mega Santa tracker. Seven thousand what what? What channel seven says is that the younger go the twenty seven year old guy who escaped from Folsom minimum security two days ago. He is serving a forty month sentence for first degree burglary. He was scheduled to be released in June of twenty nine thousand nine so he was seven months away from legally being released, and he chooses to to do a runner the other dude together, it looks like character actor rod Steiger. He was doing a sixteen year sentence for second degree robbery. And that began in two thousand six of this guy was doing sixteen years for less than the guy who you talking about a change in sentencing. The twenty seven year old guy got forty months for I scream burglary. He was going to be out in June of next year. The guy serving a sixteen year hitch runs away after twelve and fifty two so some great life choices by these gents. So again, don't pick up the tattooed white guy. I guess I need to. I'm remiss if I don't say they're both both white men, and they are in orange jumpsuits twenty seven year old white guy shaven head tax on the neck. And not probably not a frequenter of hipster bars and Ventura boulevard the other guy white guy fifty two years old bald and go go see in the heat of tonight. He was the sheriff. It's rod steiger's. But that's what he looks like long. I weigh one thirty eight you're at Wrightwood, or whatever you see if you see rod Steiger in a orange jumpsuit don't pick him up because he just walked away from work camp back, right? If this is the Gary and Shannon show Brian suits, filling an KFI AM six forty. "And number ten is never get drunk. Never get drunk. That's it never get drunk in and make sense because you will not be in full control of your faculties. You need to be one hundred percent engaged with the people. You are trying to swindle. Yeah. I I would probably guess that. There's a subset to that rule. Maybe two in one of the impending sees or something but never get drunk, but try to get the other person drunk. Maybe right ply them with a couple of vodkas and drink water on your own. I dunno or have a have a cocktail that is always just like halfway empty half. And I think those are those are pretty good. And it's surprising. How simplistic they are. I I would argue that a lot of these rules aren't just applicable to scam people. They're pretty good in most things in life them of them some of them. Well, I think be a patient listener be engaged and avoiding being messy and drunk. I think those for at least are just great advice. I mean, so these are all great things to you know, if you wanna comport yourself as an empathetic normal human being and if your goal is to make connections with other people, they're great. If your goal is to take advantage of people get their money into whatever you want with it. I guess they're also great to and just blindly agreeing with someone's opinions about things that are very important to them. I totally agree with you. No, no, I agree with you on everything. Ben, I agree with you on everything Christopher, but despite our I guess reluctant admiration of listings techniques, not everybody agreed with his methods and law enforcement continue to hunt him now after he was arrested by the secret service. He did manage to escape prison for a moment. I think not through some clever scheme. I think he just literally used bench. Right. Well, so here's the thing. Yeah. So list was arrested. He was all set to go to trial the day before his trial. He faked an illness. And so I think he got a few extra liberties he might not otherwise have he was in a less secure location. And I love it. I don't want to be the person who admires the criminal. You don't. I don't wanna be the guy who lifts up the person who's taking the money. Everyone else. But this is pretty amazing. You gotta say, let's take the night before his trial. He takes bedsheet. He ties it around the window. He breaks through the bars. Somehow he gets out as he's hanging from the side of the prison the prisoners in the city there are some passersby who look up at him. And he takes out a rag from his pocket. And he pretends to be washing the windows. I mean, that's so not only does he have this great planning. But he's got great improvisational. It'd be great to do improv with this guy. Yeah. And so he pretends to be washing windows. So people don't report him. He leaps down from his bedsheet lands in front of some onlookers, and passersby bows. And then runs away into the night. Yes. Ed gets away for one month. He is captured in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is not able to talk his way out of these these charges eventually pleads guilty to some of the many things he is being hounded for. Yeah. And he he ends up all the way on the other side of the country. He's in Alcatraz. That's where his final days are. Well, no, not his. So he ends up in Alcatraz. He's there for a stretch of time like twenty years, I think. Yeah. And then he's transferred to another prison. I believe it was in Missouri. I could be wrong about that. And and that's where he dies. He dies of illness. Again, it's the sort of anti-climactic end for an exciting life of adventure and scam. But I mean, but that's that's how life is. Right. It doesn't always tie up neatly in abo-. It's not a three act play. You know, you you die in prison on his death certificate.
