"Jeff Bezos. There isn't an individual who I haven't met. Or who I haven't at least read the works of. That I think really influences me. I think most has been the support networks that I've built along the way. So Ron Lancaster, I met several years ago while we were in the Techstars program in Minneapolis. He's another CTO. He's been enormously helpful to me in navigating the position. And figuring out over the years or just someone to talk over this, what's going on here? What should we do about it? I think that that sort of support network. Is really important. And it's something that I struggled with over the years, asking for help. It's not something that comes naturally to me. I want to do everything myself. I want to fix everything myself. I don't want to. Reach out and make other people solve my problems for me. Which is not really what asking someone for help is. But it's how I even four or 5 years ago looked at asking people for help. So I think building that support network and being comfortable reaching out to people and building those real relationships with people who are experienced in your field, it's going to be way more useful than any inspiration from some public figure. Well, we talked about a mistake Nick, but a little bit different spin. If you go back to the beginning, what would you do differently or where would you consider taking a different approach? So we should have pivoted out of the recommendation space a hell of a lot earlier. I think we carried on in that space for much too long. It's very crowded. There's a lot of approaches to that recommendation space. Ours was unique. Was shape based in a way that no one else was doing, but it was still incredibly difficult to get any attention over the noise of sizing solutions 250 other companies that are in that recommendation personalization space. Part of that was my fault in being overly attached to what we had built. Realizing that sooner and making the pivot that we did sooner would have made a huge difference for us. Well, last question, Nick. So you're getting on a plane and you're sitting next to a young entrepreneur that's built the next big thing. They're jazzed about it, they can't wait to show it off to the world. Can't wait to show it off to you right there on the plane. What advice do you give that person having gone down this road a bit? One of the pieces of advice that is most stuck with me is really just understand first the problem that you are solving. And it's a fundamental engineering principle, but it's one that we lose sight of far too often in becoming enamored with our technology and becoming enamored with the fancy ways that we can solve a problem that maybe no one is having. So first and foremost, I would say figure out really even before you figure out your full solution or test anything, figure out what it is that you're trying to solve and figure out why people need help with that. Why is it that. Why is this a problem? Beyond that it is what are the root causes of that and where can you most efficiently address that problem? Because I have a background in computer vision machine learning. I will tend to hit everything with a computer vision hammer. And that works pretty well for some stuff. But it's over complicated for others. I think I really good example of this sort of thinking. I was advising someone a few months ago. They were trying to figure out they wanted to see how they could apply machine learning to help them filter filter data in their database. And at the end of the day, we talked through what their problem was, what they were trying to get out of this machine learning system. And they really just didn't need machine learning at all. The whole system could be achieved with some creative use of hashes. And it was a lot simpler. It was a lot faster. It wasn't technologically fancy at the end of the day, but it got the job done. So I think looking for simple solutions to real problems is the best advice that I have. I love that advice that's fantastic. Well, Nick, thank you for being on the show today. "You. You help communities. Think about disaster mitigation strategies. But how does planning work when you go to sleep with a category two storm and then you wake up to a category four. it's really challenging and It's as the other guests have have discussed earlier. It's increasingly an issue. This rapid intensification Situation that we have Mitigation can only do so much in a situation like that we would really love to see. mitigation that is coated to To protect communities against these These higher category hurricanes But you know in the in in the you know in the event that that hasn't been done yet or it's still in the works We just need to continue to be really diligent about doing what we need to do to prepare ensuring that evacuation plans are in place and just being aware that rapid intensification of these storms is something that we need to. We need to be aware for me to prepare communities to to help feel west. Now we're in a state where we're not even sure what the full extent of the damage is from ida. How long can these types of assessments take it can. it can take a a while it's A lot of the work just there. There's sort of need to be Some conditions in place for some of those damage assessments to to even be done safely I don't have a specific. Kind of timeline In my head right now but you know it. In a smaller event it can take days. It could take up two weeks Or even potentially longer than that depending on the accessibility of certain areas. What types of natural defenses do some areas have against hurricanes well. Some of the natural defenses are barrier islands and dune structures and so forth. But the more we've all been talking about the more that we live and build a in the immediate coastal areas and the more we deal with sea level rise. The more people that live in harm's way The more we encroach upon The areas that are our defense mechanism. We have less buffer between us in the storms and so we are were living right on the precipice of where hurricanes bring their full brunt of wind and water and so that means number one. You have to build more resilient you have to build better build back better so that you can withstand the forces of the storm if you're going to build their you have to be insured for the losses that could happen if you're going to build there and you have to be ready and willing and able to get people out of harm's way when the storms come to these very vulnerable coastal and inland areas and that means sometimes especially in rapid intensification scenarios. That you're sometimes there's going to be false alarms and we have to start taking more preliminary steps sooner so that when the forecast does get even more dire That we can make those final steps now because the rap intensification forecasts in this particular case. We're actually pretty good. Just say you know more than a day in advance to forecast cat for and have storm surge warnings. Go up a day and a half and storm surge watches. Go up two days ahead of time. There was time to react and we have to take more action. Be more proactive. Sooner in where and how we build and where and how we evacuate but that brings up a question amanda about evacuation. Because i think there's an assumption that people can just up and leave and not. Everyone has access to the resources necessary to make that kind of move. They may not have transportation. They may be an elder Living on their own in not the kind of support that's necessary so How does that piece of it fit into conversations about evacuation really important that we recognize the limitations that many people have on their ability to evacuate some of them as you mentioned the lack of access to a personal vehicle Needs related to to mobility other functional needs the need to continue working and the inability to Be able to Pay rent if if you do evacuate those are all major issues with evacuation. And i think that It's the first step is just recognizing that that's an issue. I know that there's there certainly been planning efforts in in many places to To take those evacuation considerations into account and look at providing Some other options including public transit to to help people evacuate And certainly More work needs to be done there and want to end with just thinking from each of you about what people should be considering if they're in the region in in the days and weeks ahead and maybe thinking longer term about being prepared for the next storm that comes through rick. I'll come to you. I know first of all in the immediate aftermath here again. We've run the numbers and the The dangers are just about as high in the aftermath and the the cleanup as they are from the storm itself so again proper generator use operating those outdoors and helping people not over exert and avoiding accidents and heart attacks and heat exhaustion. That's really important but also longer term. We gotta realize the hurricane seasons only half over we gotta keep our hurricane plans in place and that sounds like a cliche but the more you think ahead about what you're gonna do. Preparations are and then building better more resilient because we can withstand the forces of the wind and water better than we do if we build for it and that requires a lot of investment from the government to help folks do that but we saw with the risk reduction system around new orleans. How that's possible to your thoughts. I i'd like to echo a lot of that. Certainly if you are still in the area continued to listen to local officials and follow recommendations and as we look forward to recovery Instead of taking an approach where we go back to normal really thinking through how we can protect these communities more effectively from disasters in the future.
