GOP leader 'pausing' social media after liking naughty LGBTQ posts
"Tennessee's lieutenant governor Randy mcnally is taking a break from social media. Last week, 79 year old Republican Randy mcnally said he had no intention of stopping after revelations that he repeatedly commented on racy post by a 20 year old gay model and other LGBTQ personalities. The lieutenant governor of Tennessee has been accused of hypocrisy and was lampooned on Saturday Night Live this week for among other things, saying his intent was engagement and encouragement when he commented with hearts and fire emojis on a photo of the young man's backside. Mcnally has issued an apology, saying he did not mean to embarrass anyone, and says he's pausing all social media activity to reflect and receive more guidance. Mcnally denies having a record that his anti gay that says he supports traditional marriage and has supported legislation restricting drag shows. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Senate has passed a bill that would base people's legal gender identities on their anatomy at birth and prevent transgender people from changing their driver's licenses and birth certificates to match their chosen gender identity. "Had one day to do it, and I chose animation. It's interesting because stop motion so many live action directors. And I am primarily live action director, even though I know something about animation now. But so many live action directors, their first movies, whether it was when they were a kid or when they were like me, made this short that it's all, it's always stop motion because it's the lowest bar of entry, technically not technically, but financially, to make something that, you know, feels that has a little bit of worldbuilding and feels like you get your creative satisfaction. And so yeah, there's so many, very much more successful than me, directors I've talked to, like, yes, stop motion, like the first ten shorts I made Ross thought, though. When you had a great thing, there you already had this cute, adorable voice, right? That Jenny did. Was that so was that hotel room experience that you were saying? Was that really the first time she'd ever done the voice or the first time you heard it? That was the first time she'd ever done it, which I could say that it was, she was surprised by it too, because she had just gotten done on Saturday Night Live where you're sort of staying up all hours of the night working 24/7, just trying to ring every drop of comedic potential voices, characters, get out of yourself. And that's how you find the gold. And she felt completely spent and was like, I've already everything in my arsenal has been pitched as a sketch. And so she was shocked when she found a new year. But at least she found something that she could own, then it's not Saturday night live.

What you heard right there again was just kind of an offhand remark. Was it, was it spontaneous? Was it scripted? Who knows? But Woody Harrelson is saying something that's totally true. The media is purchased by big tech. They're purchased by Pfizer. The entire media, if you look at one after the other after the other, they say brought to you by Pfizer, brought to you by Pfizer. And the response to Woody Harrelson saying just that little remark has been extraordinary. Let me read some of these headlines here. Variety magazine. "Actor and comedian Richard belzer has died at his home in southern France, according to The Hollywood Reporter, belzer was 78. And marches are a letter with a look at his life. Homicide. And he was talking to a wall, but anyway, I have a relationship with them where every time I try to submit something, they turn it down, and I just have fun playing games, seeing how they can keep turning something down. They go, oh, it's three words too long. So then I take three words out. They go, oh, well, it dehumanized. This is what they said about Paul's piece. It dehumanizes members of our society. Post peace was basically saying we have moral madness right now. The fact that a girl can be in the locker room and a naked man is standing there who thinks he's a woman is standing next to a little girl, destroying her. You are calling crazy, crazy, and we're not, we're not allowed to do that anymore.

"Delver, 41 in foggy bottom, also 41 in Silver Spring at 1140. The Golden Globe nominations were announced last week among this year's nominees for best picture, the dark comedy, the banshees of venezia and the sci-fi adventure, everything everywhere, all at once. Vulture critic Jen chaney joined WTO piece and and Deb on Skype with her thoughts on some of the nominees. I wasn't too surprised, especially on the film side by the nominations that we saw, everything everywhere all at once and the banshees of in a Sharon got a number of nominations. And on the TV side, Abbott elementary got several. So that wasn't really too surprising on the TV side though. There were some unexpected nominations from my point of view like Hillary swank for Alaska daily. But overall, this was not two surprise laden. Seems like people are talking about a snub for Tommy. Yes. People thought he might get nominated for Top Gun: Maverick. However, in light of the kind of scandals and controversies around the globes, he returned his Golden Globes last year, so that may have been a factor in why he wasn't nominated. So the Golden Globes addressed the controversy of its lack of diversity. How have they done that? Well, they basically doubled the voting pool. They didn't add a ton of new members, but they allowed people who are not members of Hollywood foreign press to vote this year. And they very carefully, I think, tried to diversify the people in that voting pool. So I think you have a broader sense of representation. But I do think there's still some trepidation about how to treat the Golden Globes going forward. I'm not sure, is everybody who's nominated going to show up or not. It's going to be interesting to see. Is it still relevant are the Golden Globes still viewed the same way now that they've been sort of called out? I mean, they've been called out for years, and then we sort of just accepted it for a while. So this isn't totally new that it's been called out, but I think it's never been canceled. It's never been not shown on NBC the way it was last year. And the world kept on turning even without the globes getting the publicity that they usually get. However, I do think it is a little bit of a boost for NBC to have that show and I think it does help people kind of focus some of their attentions around what should be nominated or not for the Oscars, but I don't think it's vital. Every time she came to work, she had a new character or a new accent or a new impression that would just blow you away. I know I'm not supposed to say this as your boss, but I love you, cecily. That's Keenan Thompson wishing her well after SNL strong as expected to star in season two of the Apple TV musical comedy. Virginia governor youngkin laying out his plan for more tax cuts. We can do even more. Taxes are still too high. This round of $1 billion in cuts comes on top of 4 billion in tax relief, already passed this year. The governor says even with a recession looming, the state can afford it. He wants a drop in the corporate tax rate from 6 to 5%, as well as lowering the income tax rate by a quarter of a percent. He's also calling for an additional 2.6 billion in spending among the priorities $427 million for education. COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the learning loss. "Joining us now is Rachel bovard, who wrote a very interesting piece of The New York Times. What makes Trump different from desantis and other Republicans, Rachel is with us right now, Rachel, welcome to the program. Thanks for having me. So Rachel, why don't you summarize the piece for our audience and we'll dive into it from there? So the piece really looks into what I think is the appeal of Donald Trump. And I think people in Washington, particularly establishment Republicans, and even sort of what I call a conservative intelligentsia, missed this. And this is exactly the dynamic I saw play out in 2016 and it's going to play out again in 2024 because people in leadership of the Republican Party have no idea still have no idea why it is that Trump won. And it is this visceral connection that he has with his base voters who trust him implicitly. And interestingly, Dave Chappelle honed in on this, I think, really well when he was hosting Saturday Night Live recently. I don't watch Saturday Night Live personally, but I caught this clip and I thought he articulated it extremely well. He said, look, I live in Ohio. You people have no idea why Trump is so popular there. And he said, Trump is what I call an honest liar. And what he meant by that was, you know, he pointed back to this debate that Trump had with Hillary Clinton in 2016, where Trump basically said, look, I know the system is rigged because I use it. And that was just, I think, distilled to its essence, the why people trust Trump the way that they do. Because he set out loud as a beneficiary of someone at the top of the system who benefited from how it's going to rigged and corrupt toward the top. He set out loud what everybody at the bottom has long suspected, which is that the system itself is rigged and because he benefited from it. He had tremendous credibility in pointing that out. And so people, I think, who vote for Trump really see him as someone who can not bend the system because he's been part of it.

"You Thank you thank you very much It is amazing to be here hosting Saturday Night Live for the 5th time I thank you For many many reasons I'm grateful to be here tonight after a very complicated year It is wonderful to be in a place that's always emphasized sobriety and mental health Since I last hosted different things have happened In December of 2020 I went to dinner at a friend's apartment but it was not dinner It was an intervention For me My least favorite kind of intervention When I walked into my intervention I knew right away that it was an intervention Do you know how bad of a drug problem you have to have if when you open a door and see people gathered your first thought is this is probably an intervention about my drug problem There's no other reason people would be behind a door I walked in there were 6 of my friends in New York in person and 6 of my Friends over Zoom from LA And you may be thinking hey if that was me I would have been like if you're so worried about me how come you didn't fly in Don't worry I said that several times I rang that bell as often as possible I went away to a rehab which was a very good experience I'm very grateful that I went I was there for two months from December till February 2021 I was there January 6th during the insurrection wouldn't have happened on my watch 'cause I would have seen to it Was there ever an insurrection before I went to rehab No Has there been one since I got out Absolutely not They wouldn't dare They know baby J is back on the streets One thing I did in rehab one exercise is you sit down with a counselor and you delete and block all of your drug dealers phone numbers In some cases you reach out to a dealer to say hey never get in touch with me again I'm sober now It's called breaking up with your drug dealer I did this one afternoon with a counselor I sat down I texted my main dealer arvin first And I shouldn't have said his name But that's okay You don't know him anyway I texted arvin first and I said hey I'm deleting and blocking you I'm sober now I'm never going to buy drugs again And then I'm really polite so I didn't know how to end the text So I was like but thank you for all of the nights that became days And you're inspired professionalism So I send the text before I can delete and block him he texts me back He goes hey I'm so proud of you I'm so happy that you got sober You know I only bought drugs to sell to you Because I was worried about you And I didn't want you to get worse stuff off the street I know and I'm breaking up with this guy So I can't block him now I text him back you know I go hey Oh my God You sweet man I said you only bought drugs to sell to me He says yeah I said did you sell drugs to other people He said no I said this is a weird time to ask But are you a drug dealer He said no I'm a painter We talked about this Ladies and gentlemen I have no idea how I know this person So I text her I go how did it come to be That you sell me drugs And he wrote back I don't know You just kept asking I like that story 'cause there are many tales of drug dealers who have turned innocent people into drug addicts I might be the first drug addict.

"Tell you, Mike. So I just got done with work and I got in the car and I'm driving home and I heard your spiel on the crack pipe. And my jaw dropped, and I'm saying, you're not serious. So going back the last night, I was tired of, I don't know, ten, ten, 30, and I was not enough in the chair and I had box on. And I kind of woke up. And I got to go to bed and when I got up, I saw something on TV about Hunter Biden and his crack pipe and they were talking and for some reason I just thought it was like Saturday Night Live or something. I thought it was a skit. And so I went to bed and didn't think anything of it. And I was just in the back of my mind and then you came on the radio this morning and I can't believe it. And you want to know what's crazier than the story, how this isn't all that everybody's talking about today. You'd think, now I get the mainstream media. But even over at Fox News or newsmax or one American news, talk talk radio, this should be wall to wall. We're living in a system where Democrats believe that taxpayers should fund crack pipes for crackheads and John, they're doing it. $30 million program.

"Goes to something that we've talked about on this show. When i've been on in the past is that radio and television are functionally different under the law because they use spectrum to broadcast from a position point through a licensed broadcaster that means that their first amendment protection is substantially curtailed not because the government tends to regulate the things that they say or have to say but because they took a license from the government in the first place. And that's a fundamentally unique situation when it comes to speech in. Us history now. Even the equal time rule has been gutted the very famous case of howard stern achieved earned himself and equal time complaint and the fcc then applied the what is known as the bona fide news exception. Rule that those equal time provisions don't apply if a political candidate appears in the context of a news or informational style programming. Actually just to draw that out what that means is right is that is that if a candidate appears on the tonight show donald trump is on the is and that's entertainment or live that's considered different than if then if the candidate appears on the nbc nightly news or even a local news program in fact one of the very rare. It's actually a great example of one of the very rare times we're equal time is actually applied to anything besides political advertising in the last well in my lifetime actually is that when bernie sanders hilary clinton and donald trump each appeared on saturday night live. There were already primary racist going on so that puts those situations inside of the political window. And how they handled the equal time complaints from the other candidates that were in the racist both on the republican side although far less on the democratic side just because it was the basically those to burn killary is they just gave them some free ads. That was just how they handled it and only for that saturday night but that's that's equal time. The fairness doctrine is something entirely different. Even though i can show you unbelievable amounts of literature that is written about the fairness doctrine saying equal time fairness doctrine never required equal time. Let's understand the fairness doctrine. You really need to understand where it came from. Fairness doctrine is the end game on a series of events that starts in the nineteen thirties in nine hundred thirty nine. The fcc made a very obscure ruling called the mayflower decision. The mayflower decision became known as the mayflower doctrine but like many of the fcc's doctrines it actually only applied to one set of facts in one case. What happened in that case was is there. Were two people competing for one broadcast license in the city of boston. One person in boston actually through sort of a weird series of events control. Both of the am radio stations that were on the air in boston. In nineteen thirty eight and a competing company made a bid for one of the two licenses and they were known as gangqi and what they did was. They said the guy who owns these two stations is using them to editorialize on behalf of candidates that he likes specifically their beef was about the may oral race and one state assembly race at the time. The fcc drug its feet on this comparative license hearing for a long time and remember this is back..

I'll watch those kind of crime mystery things and a lot of these. You know, I shouldn't say a lot. But on occasion, you know a lot of these podcasts or just Kind of normal people that are just have an interest. They cracked some of these cases. Oh, and then what happened? Right? Exactly. I know Keith Morrison's the best. Yeah, right. You don't saying right? You do it, or you do a horrible But what's the guy's name? Oh, my gosh. Oh, from Saturday Night Live. Yeah. The breath. Yeah. Act later. Yeah, Yeah, he does The baby just hear him in my brain right now. Yeah, yeah. He was such a nice man I can't make you know it to do. Keith Morrison is almost like doing karaoke. And then it warms up as it makes its way out towards the coast. So we call it compression or heating and that's what we're going to see. We're going to see a big warm up. You'll feel it today and you'll really feel it as we get into your Tuesday and Wednesday, But here's the good deal. Because, yes, we're going to get hot. It's the last few days of summer and we're going to go out on a big hot note, with temperatures going well above the average, but it's only going to be for a couple of days. And then look at the temperatures drop. You talked about fault light conditions. We're going to have it for the rest of the I would say the end of this week through the weekend. And all of next week, so you're going to start getting into that false spirit rather quickly. Summer is going to go out a little bit of a blast here. Temperatures go above the average. Then we cool down through the weekend. We may even be talking about some rain Thursday, Friday Saturday I know That's three days that I just mentioned. I'm not saying it's going to rain for three days, but we have a system out there. So if it comes in a little early, maybe we get a chance to some scattered thunderstorms Thursday that comes in a little late. Maybe it kind of is more of a Friday Saturday deal again. This is one of those. It's not going to be so much of a direct hit. It's going to be out there, they'll affect some areas more than others. So before you start altering or worrying about your weekend plans, it's just throwing a chance of thunderstorms. For the mountains and deserts will worry.

"Show the cast ducks. The writers are stupid them all boring so live from the bronx. Y'all shut up. I'm sorry. Do i hit send or just good cardi. Your music has changed my life. It honestly inspired me to say what's on my mind so thank you go ahead. I am a fan but maybe also your best friend or pretty much the same. Can you please go gimme some. I'm sure unless you want me to stay no. I have a lot of very short songs. That i've written now. I'm always amazed. At how how. Y'all keep it funny after all of these years and i imagine that that part of that is because you have new cast members coming in you have. The host rotates every single week. Could you talk a little bit. Just about What that process looks like how you all come up with your various ideas. Yeah i mean it's kind of the thrill of the show is that every week is different because there's a new host and see kind of never known what you're gonna get and it's a great source of inspiration every week But yeah the process for making. The show is kind of about finding new ideas so like monday. We pitch an idea to the host end to the writer's room. It's kind of just a way to get the juices flowing and kind of see the hosts vibe like kind of you know when you get into a room with someone in your like. Oh you're kind of taller than i thought or sexier than i thought or whatever you know like and so then you're like okay. Maybe i'll write them that way. And so that's part of it and then tuesday. We write those sketches wednesday. We read them than some get chosen and then thursday and friday we rehearse in film the the videos and then saturday we rehearse again then do dress rehearsal. And that's the show so it's a really quick process And so you learn to be really free and not precious with your ideas as far as like they're gonna come they're going to go. You gotta think of more okay last week sucked but it's over and we're onto a new one here we go again It helped me a lot to be less. Loosen my grip on my own ideas as we as we wrap up. I'd love to know how both the experience of the three seasons on shrill and your time on snl have like influence or impacted. How how you plan to like chart your path in your career going forward like would have these experiences like taught you about yourself for the type of storytelling that you wanna do. It's tommy lot so much And i think it the main thing it's taught me as to trust my gut to kind of take it one hour at a time. Because i think there's so much uncertainty in really most businesses but particularly in entertainment. Because it's like. Oh are you doing this. Are you doing that. You're auditioning for something. It's just it can be hard to grab onto something. And i think for me. It's just like i gotta take it minute by minute so. I don't have like a huge trajectory that i'm trying to hit and i don't feel a ton of pressure. I kind of just trying to be inspired creative and follow those kind of notion. Cnn and i mean i loved writing shrill and it was extremely cathartic. And so i think there's those are themes that are naturally important to me and i'll continue to ride around them but i would love to come at them from different angles or different perspective. And i think. I'll just continue to do that. And see where it takes me. Is there a mantra or like a quote that like has stuck with you that you use as a as a way of like just like figuring out how to move through the world that you were open to share called this my mantra but i do think it's something that i like. Go back to a lot is especially because at snl there's so much nerves in there so much adrenaline in it's live and you're put into these extreme scenarios. Is that the thing that i often return to is sort of like you know how to do this. You know how to do this. You know like. I know how to get on stage and make people laugh or i know how to i can do it. I've done it for close to fifteen years now. I know how to do this and it really helps. When i feel kind of freaked out even in making decisions about you know projects to say no to or yes to. It's kind of like going back to just checking in with that. Inner voice and being like you know what to do. You know how to do this. I love that. I love that. And i think that's a perfect place to ended everybody. Who's listening make sure you watch. "Bullseye jesse thorn. our guest. Eighty bryant is the star of hulu shrill and a veteran cast member on saturday night live. She's being interviewed by trail anderson. I'm going to ask you about snl in a minute. But i. i've been interviewing a lot of like artists and creatives over the last year in so many people have talked about how you know. How the lockdown. How you know having to stop everything particular us. This industry Was deeply clarifying for them in their art in how they go about or how they go about now doing the work that they do Is that a similar experience for you. Do you feel like you know this last year. And a half has has shifted anything in in how you wanna go about doing the work that you do. I mean definitely. I think we all hopefully are changed for the better in some way from this. It's i more protective and more boundaried about my kind of private time. You know time for myself time for my family and my husband and cause certainly you know i've been doing snl and shrill at the same time for almost four years now and it's not a healthy schedule and in a weird way. The show ending is obviously painful. And i will miss it very much. But i also think it's a big opportunity for me to protect myself better. You know and take care of myself and actually protect time for creativity and thinking over an idea longer rather than feeling like okay. I have the idea. I gotta type it up now it over. Let's get it going you know. There's there's more room for creativity in having a little bit of space to check in with yourself. What does doing as nell like. Give you or provide for you as an artist as a creative that. Perhaps you know doing series work. Does it let let you do or vice versa. Yeah i mean they're really different shows. They're really really different shows in. They're really different styles of performance. I mean sketch comedy is almost like clown work. You know it's big reactions and goofy voices and a crazy way or like dress me as a chicken. You know like a wonderful to do. You know it's like silly and less pressure in some ways and it allows me to like right into these fantastical situations And i love you know. It really is like a piece of who i am but i think shrill also really allowed me to kind of dig deeper and be more introspective and Perform things that i never would have performed me be on us and l. I mean certainly like scenes where i'm crying or or sex scenes was like whole new territory for me but actually think they made me better on. Snl and what i do at snl makes me better on shrill. They kind of feed each other in a nice way. I wanna play a clip from this past season of. Snl they a lot of like prerecorded filmed remotely. You know by the cast members in this bid that we're about to listen to our guests eighty ryan shares details from some of her actual childhood journals. Let's take a listen. At this point. I was nine years old. And what our nine year olds in love with horses popstars. No the answer is turtles. Okay and i loved turtles so much but not enough to learn how to spell the word and so down. hard on. Tur- tells her tells two tales tests but at the bottom here. I've made an important note and it's coming from a speech bubble from no one. But i won't eat them so don't think i was going to eat. My turtles skies. What was it like doing these types of sketches and things from your home or from your office. Oh gosh i mean. I'm not gonna lie. It was really hard. It was really really hard partially. Because i mean now i'm much better at setting up a microphone or setting up a camera or making sure it's lit in a way that's going to work for the show. Certainly that's stuff that i didn't know how to do and And also i mean those shows especially were like early early early in the pandemic and a few blocks from my house. There was also like refrigerated trucks for bodies and and sirens constantly and we lost a beloved beloved member of our crew. How wilner and many of our cast members in crew members were losing family members. So it was really like to realities at once which one is. I'm trying to fill myself in a goofy hat. That i found at the bottom of my closet and the other is the reality of what was happening. In how frightening it was also how much new york was sort of on the forefront of that and so it was really hard. It was really really odd. But i'm really proud of those shows. And i think because of the circumstances we all wrote things that i don't think we ever would of written because of these weird parameters that were brought on by the pandemic and so i feel really proud of those and also. They were an incredible incredible effort by our crew. I mean they were downloading files from a bunch of us who had taken improv classes. We didn't know what the hell we were doing. So they were explaining everything to us and they deserve a gold medal for that. It was like patience. Absolute patients personified. Do you have a favorite sketch from your your time on the shell or a favorite character because you play some recurring characters as well. Oh gosh i mean i honestly. I've been on the show so long. It's hard because i almost feel like there's different phases or stages where it's like. Those early wins meant so much more. Having my first piece on that. I wrote or or some of those things what am i. I pre-tape Videos that i ever wrote was Do it in my twin bed which was like a music video that we did with all the girls and it sort of started this trend of doing these like all girl music videos for snl and basically it was just a chance for us to like act like pussycat dolls and strut around and say stupid stuff. But i was really proud of those in those early days because it just felt like i was at least finding my way on the show but then you know there's other things later in the show that it's like you kind of changes every couple of years. I want to play one of the this is from the episode when cardi b. Was there and you you play a character. I guess you play yourself. But then an alter ego version of yourself called eighty and we play that quick shout out for snl instagram who. Yeah of course. Okay so what should i say. Say saloon the fans okay. Stop asking me about to.

"He answers. Take a listen. Y'all save are him. Monster has been torturing me every day. i don't i don't torture you. i'm just expressing. Just shut up. Do you know how blame it is that you spend so much time trying to hurt a complete stranger. The real person. And i'm just trying to go to work and do my job and you're calling me a pig every day and you threaten to kill me and you talk about my my family and what i don't understand the most is why is because i'm not the type of girl you want or maybe is it because i am the type of girl you wanna but you're too chicken to admit it either way. It doesn't matter because you you you i hate you. I love that scene. Because i remember when i was working at the l. a. times earlier in my career covering diversity in hollywood with the focus on black and queer film. I would get a lot of emails from readers that were the most insane things that you can imagine. You know saying all all of the app. But that's you can think of came my way and it was. It was empowering for me to see any find her troll confront him. She also breaks out of his car. Window is the best part of the. But i i want to ask about the the the important or the reason why you all as a team wanted to to have that scene of confronting this guy who has caused a lot of problems for her part of it was just based on the book. I mean that is lindy zone experience. No not exactly that. She didn't smash anyone's garwin no but she did experience extremely targeted harassment and to an extreme degree where she was in danger at times. And i think that is of course. I mean just like what you experienced. That's gonna change you on some level you know and i think lindy did have the opportunity to meet someone. Who is trolling her. And who had done some very cruel things to her. And when they were in person he released sort of folded and apologized. And you know. I think that's a big theme of our show is sort of like really humanizing People who have been dismissed as as something caricature e. or or just a sort of thing to grab onto as like hateful you know And and so yeah it was just. It was a natural part of the story because of her book. And i also think it's the experience of being other person trying to be a public person that area just is unfortunately one of the reasons why you're here because you are a double emmy nominee this year Before your lead role in this final season of shrill as well as supporting actress nam. Before your work on the now i'd love to know what you were doing when the emmy nominations came out where you where you up at five o'clock in the morning watching or were you sleeping. I can't like engage with like award stuff otherwise it would be crazy. You know what i mean. So i've sort of taken a very passive experience of the whole thing. So i didn't even know of it. They were announcing and i was in l. a. And my husband was in new york and so we were just on facetime like kind of chatting because we hadn't gotten to talk the day before and all the sudden at like seven thirty in the morning or whatever it was i got probably forty texts within like five seconds and it made me think. Something bad had happened honestly. I was really scared. Like i thought someone who had died but then when i open and also they didn't say like you were just nominated for an emmy. They were just things like or like exclamation points or like you know and so it was like a trying really hard to put together what was happening. And then eventually. I saw like double nam and i was like okay. I think i just got nominated. But even then i didn't. I didn't totally understand what was happening. Took me a minute. How does it feel to be recognized. for this final season of shrill. Oh it's it means a lot. I mean it was very very unexpected so that was certainly thrill link and i think it's our best season and i think we did get to go a lot deeper on some of these issues that we've been writing around And i i was really proud of my performance. It was really hard to do it in cove it and to stay connected with our crew and our cast but i feel like we did something that was incredibly challenging and so especially to be recognized now is it's it means a lot and it's a really nice cherry on top to sort of say goodbye to this chapter. Yeah i wanted to ask about how the panza make which we're still living through right. Impacted the production of that that last season in what ways where things different for you. I mean honestly. In every way like very weirdly we were sort of picked up for our third season right as lockdown with starting and so the entire experience of making shrill. This season happened through the pandemic we wrote in a zoom writer's room in may and june. Those were early days still of the pandemic and then we were planning to film in the summer but continued to get pushed because of surges and so ultimately we filmed in october november and december which there were also surges during that time because of the holidays and it was so difficult. Major writing challenges. There couldn't be party scenes and we had to limit physical contact or We wrote around our actors comfort as well. I mean i really didn't want to put anyone in a position where they had to do something that they didn't feel comfortable doing so. It was a lot of checking in even more so than usual and then similar like the editing process and putting the music in the show of these are all things that normally we would have in-person meetings or be able to get together and talk about that we did it all these zoom in all remotely so in some ways it made doing. Snl at the same time easier. Because i could do it from my office at snl or from my room but it was definitely a huge challenge. We'll finish up with eighty bryant in just a minute. "Nick over milkshakes. How would you possibly know that bananas going to be better than s'mores. I'm just very good at picking stuff. like your boyfriend. Wow sorry no. Fear did short stead. Good thing is we broke up so he's gone. Sorry no it's actually. I'm actually me and my girlfriend of six years just broke out. So i'm i'm sorry this okay. Are you seeing anyone else. I mean yeah but not really like kinda dating. But also i think i just wanna be single painting is. It's a lot each season of the show. You all delve more in deeper into anne's love live In that fran as well for that matter why was it important. You know for you In for the teen to explore kind of those aspects of the character's lives as deeply as you all did well. It's deeply attached to body image. You know a relationships really often defined how we feel about each ourselves and our bodies the way they look. And i think you know in the first two seasons annie's sort of kind of constantly breaking up or getting back together with this one partner and in this new season. She's she's having to put herself out there again. And i think for a fat woman. It's a different ballgame because there are sections of the population. Who will even consider dating you. Because you're fat and And so there's that kind of fear in approaching any person and so that's something we wanted to explore of like kind of the trepidation and reading signals. It becomes even more mixed sometimes when you have sort of a a difficult view of yourself And i think it's a great way to show personal growth. Just within the arc of the story makes me think of something you said earlier when you're talking about Balancing the the comedic elements with the kind of more serious dramatic elements. What were the conversations like between you. And the other folks on the writing team about the tone and and the the the kind of thrust that you wanted audiences to take away from what they were seeing on screen. I think early conversations. We decided we wanted to have a pretty ground tone partially because you know not entirely but a lot of fat characters that you see are kind of like extremes like cartoonish extremes you know where like especially in the romantic scene. I feel like it's a little bit of a miss piggy syndrome. Where it's like. She's going to jump on the man and crush him and that her sexual interaction and we were really wanting to give a fact character dignity in those spaces and keep her human. Keep it grounded and so we found a really grounded tone but comedy is also a huge part of who. I am in a huge part of pretty much. Entire ensemble is like a comedian some form so it was really wonderful. 'cause even in our serious scenes i feel like part of the rhythm of the show. We have a lot is like if there's kind of an intense moment often there's a huge joke at the end that's kinda gonna pull you out of it or or in big goofy moments. Something at the end of that moment might feel a little more grounded and it's a little bit of it's how real life is. Honestly i mean there are funny moments even at funerals and that's sometimes hard. I think i would. I was thinking of when you were speaking. Was you know particularly about the ways in which we've seen fat characters before as these extremes. The movie that immediately came to mind for me was orbit right which is antic comedy but like all of the comedy is about. You know the woman's size riot and and how how much of a issue quote unquote that is for other people around her and it is deeply in a lot of ways. It's dehumanizing right of people. You i often think about this with incomes to like. Lgbtq character sometimes particularly black characters. Were often only the comedic relief on. Yeah screen right and never have the ability to be fully realized you know people with multidimensional lives in things like that. And i think that is similar with characters as well. There are these tropes Characters are supposed to to fit in In when you start stepping outside of that it is. It is a super simple thing like you. You mentioned earlier but also in the grand scheme of things is is is radical or revolutionary by a lot of people's terms. Yeah and i mean. I think it's something that it's it's exactly what you're saying where it's like it becomes dehumanizing or or it makes people who are real people into caricatures and ultimately it's lazy writing it really is just lazy writing like sink a little harder you know. That's that's an it's not. A reflection of who these people are. Fat people are having meaningful relationships. They are having sexy sex. You know same with lgbtq characters. It's like it is. I think it's the great difference of having the people who have lived the stories in the writer's room and it changes things so drastically from then other people's perceptions which often are sort of stereotypes or or these cartoonish versions of of people that really probably have never existed right. Is there a an episode or like an onset memory that you know now that the series is over that sticks with you in out in your mind like particularly a great time or something that just you can't get out of your head when you think back about the journey of shrill. Oh gosh i mean. There's lots of really wonderful. I think the one that. I really remember that people ask me about a lot. Is the pool party fat. All fat babes pool party in the first season which was really like a very special experience because it was sort of like actually just attending a pool party surrounded by fat people who are all in swimsuits and living comfortably and it was really thrilling to be around and you know the folks that worked background that those two days they were they were kind of living at themselves. You know and like dancing and eating and hanging out between takes and i think the mood was so infectious. I mean some of our crew was like in tears at the monitors because it really just felt very free. That was the whole setup for me to tell you what my favorite scene is by the way. Which is i think it's from the first season. I think we have a clip of a portion of the scene in which your character anne Like a lot of women or black folks or other folks of color online is getting like harassed controlled by this guy and anne ends up finding the troll going to his house knocking on his door and.

"It's a really sensitive topic for a lot of people you know. Actually most people have strong feelings about their own body or resenting it and i think for many people the body positively movement has been very helpful and i think for other people at it hasn't been enough for it. It leaves lacking or it doesn't recognize the people who need to be recognized. There's so many pieces of it. And i think certainly lindy's book and her writing and that influence on our show really was clarifying but i also think it was helpful at least for me to just be like. We're telling one person story this one characters experience of of this and and that made it easier to approach because there is so much to unpack there and it. It's so different for so many people. But i think we're reaching a moment where now a lot of people have a sense of body positively whatever that means to them I certainly feel a desire to go deeper than that if that makes sense like go. Further than just body positivity in trying to figure out you know our internal biases. And all those i mean. It's we're doing this at a lot of places right now. Is looking a little bit deeper. And i think that's what we tried to do on the show especially in his third season. We're dealing with like internalized fat phobia in those kinds of things. Even though she's a fat woman. It's it's a start. Well that's one of the interesting things right about what you all have done with. This show is we. We get the opportunity to go on a journey with anne in terms of our relationship to to her body her relationship to other people's bodies and the various kind of complex conversations that an individual right has to have with themselves as it relates to that. Was that intentional. From your standpoint as as a writer and wanting to have this conversation to be able to to show the complexities and sometimes the contradictions right. That we have in these in these ways he. Yeah i mean. I think you're really hitting right on it. Which was like we tried to especially the first season. 'cause it was only six episodes. The first season was very short. We really tried to simplify you. Know and there couldn't be like a million b. and c. plots we kind of had to make it like a character study and so that really changed. I think sort of the focus of the show is a whole where it it really is about watching one person try to transform and i think she really does and becomes more assertive. I also think it's about her friendship and many other pieces but ultimately it was sort of like we're going to follow this sort of persons transformation in that. That was what we were trying to track. I love the character in part because she's also a journalist. She's working at this. You know all wheatley. Opt weekly paper. And i love asking actors in particular about like how they prepare to to play a journalist if they prepare at all. Because i'm obviously being vain. If you can't tell so. I would love to know what did the broader prep process. Look like for you. In terms of like delving into anne figuring out what her particular corks might be. Would that process look like for you. Yeah i mean at least as far as trying to become a journalist and thank you for your approval because that means everything you know. I was really lucky because lindy west. Who is you know has written for all weekly papers and has written for the new york times and she was also a writer and executive producer as well and so. I had like my specimen right next to me and the best way and so you know she was probably my number one source for being like how would you even approach that or would you ever even ask this kind of question and And we also would return to a lot of her old writing from when she was doing that kind of all weekly type stuff. She went to a strip club buffet and wrote a review and then we wrote an episode based on that we did a lot of sort of returning to her previous work. But we also. I mean portland's still has that kind of scene. They have all weekly that still going up the mercury and we went and visited their offices and it was really inspiring. And you see how it's sort of a community that's really strong but also struggling to keep hold in this kind of digital world and then you know as far as like developing her and other ways i certainly. Was you know. Kind of thinking about who i used to be. Maybe more in my late teens and early twenties as far as like self hatred or like little things. I would do about like touching my shirt to make sure it wasn't clinging to my body or things like that using those pieces to kind of put together and builder back up. Yeah you mentioned the ensemble in you know your other co stars who are amazing. I wanna talk just a little bit about lally who plays your best friend and roommate fran Throughout the entire series first of all love. Her thinks she's amazing. But the chemistry between you two. It's super magnetic. There are plenty of laughs that you all give us an plenty of tears as well. Could you talk about like the other cast members that help you put this all together. Oh i mean. I think from what we were talking about earlier to me. That's like everything is like the chemistry in the ensemble but lally petit particular. I kind of always think of her as my one. True scene partner. You know because the boyfriend characters come and go but she was always there and she is so incredibly talented. She's she's such a funny comedian and can improvise with me. Which is huge. But she also has a major handle on these tiny tiny move she can do with her face to make something so emotional or so painful. And i think she and i were both really suited for that free each other where we were kind of up for anything. Would we would improvise in dramatic scenes and comedic scenes and I don't know that the show would have ever kind of picked up steam that it did without her because they think there is kind of a believable chemistry there. Because we're really really close in real life and that makes it very very easy and sometimes it made it really emotional to kind of play some of these moments. We've got even more with eighty. Shrill tro is based on the memoir of the same name by lindy west shrill just wrapped up its third and final season on hulu and it has earned eighty an emmy nomination for best lead actress in a comedy series on the show bryant place any eastern a writer living in portland and struggling to find her voice. She's got an on and off boyfriend who frankly should probably be just off any is also fat. She says it herself in the show's pilot unlike pretty much every other tv show. Anybody isn't treated like a problem to overcome. It doesn't really define the show either instead. Weight and body image. Come up on the show. The way these things show up in real life. Insensitive comments from well meaning family members insults from strangers moments of crushing self-doubt. And sometimes even doctors in this scene from the show's third and final season eighties character. Annie has just visited the gynecologist for an annual checkup. She has a new doctor. This time and after the exam the doctor shares a somewhat out of the blue recommendation gastric bypass surgery. The doctor hasn't run any blood tests. It's obvious she assumed her health. Based on her appearance in any is at first shocked she didn't say anything but after the appointment she finds the doctor in the parking lot. And that's when she decides to give that dr a piece of remind one important visual cue. The doctor is wearing ear. Buds in doesn't hear a word. Andy says hey. Hey that was. You're gonna look at me for ten minutes and tell me cut my stomach out. How is that medically ethical. You're a bad person. You're a bad person you. oh yes. So i wanted to start off with that clip in particular because i think it captures just like the tone the energy of the series so well for the folks who for whatever reason have been living under a rock or don't have a hulu subscription and haven't seen it yet but to get started. I'd love to if you can give give folks just an idea of what the series is about why they should be watching it. Yeah i mean the show is about a young woman who is trying to change her life but not change her body and she's a fat woman who i think has spent most of her life literally trying to shrink herself and figuratively to and so. I'm pretty much in the first season in the first episode. She has kind of a breakthrough of like. I'm gonna try and live in a different way. And that's a lot of this series. Is her trying to find kind of her own. Self confidence of from within her rather than like external validation. How did the opportunity. Just i presented itself for you to not only star in the series but produce and write it as well. It was kind of a weird chain of events but in a nutshell i had worked with elizabeth banks when she hosted. Snl you know several years ago. Now and I heard that she optioned the book. Shrill which i was a huge fan of the show is based on shrill which is written by lindy west and i love the book. It was one of the first times. I read a book. And i was like. Oh i've had every experience in here. I relate to this on so many levels. And so when i heard that elizabeth auction the book i kinda called agents and was like what she making you know. Do we know what they're gonna make. I would love to be involved and weirdly. They were sort of like. Oh well we just got a call from elizabeth's company and they were calling to see if you'd be interested so it was like this weird be moment and then yeah. I kinda came on board. I love that would excite you most about like the potential of like adapting the book into a series. Well i think the book had a lot of really simple ideas that felt sort of radical. You know and i think for me. I was like oh that just feels like the heartbeat of a story. That would totally translate to television. And i felt like i knew this character because at different points in my life i was her. You know and and especially for you. I had been writing and producing television through. Snl in sort of this like mini version of making a sketch which is much like how you make an episode of television. It's kind of the same thing but really boiled down. And so yeah. I felt like this was a kind of in my wheelhouse in like a place where i would feel comfortable to try and put those things to the test did you. I mean obviously we all know your brilliant from snl but did you. Did you have any like trepidation. Like stepping stepping up to be the the main person right the first on the call sheet with this project. Yeah you hit the nail on the head. I mean. I think really all might work before. This had been completely about ensemble. And i think this show has an incredible ensemble as well but certainly like any is the lead character. And i'm in nearly every scene and so that was a huge adjustment but it was also a really good thing to sort of push me forward and make me take it on and And to understand that you know. I was a leader in this capacity and like an executive producer. I was making decisions that would affect our entire crew down to the pa's and that matter to me and was important so it was a really wonderful challenge in that way. Yeah yeah and one of the things. I love about the series from that very first episode. I think we get an idea of you. Know what. Anne is going through which. She's deciding that she's not going to tolerate anymore. Right in terms of like how people make assumptions about her health about her body about how she moves through the world. And i remember i feel like when the show came out i initially. You know we were in that moment where there was a lot of conversation happening in pop culture about potty positively and about anti fatness in our society. I'm wondering you know now. Three three seasons later. How you feel like the the conversations in the tone in the perspective brought up in the show. reflects or fits into that broader conversation. That we're still having right about the ways in which society in folks are often you know anti-fat and fat phobic in a lotta ways without sometimes thinking about it. Yeah i mean. I think.

And so i i said all right and i go there and And richard jenny was the headliner and talk about watching a finished product for an hour and a half dude. Now i mean so. I mean that's the last guy you want to see when you're thinking about doing what he does you know and i'm like yeah. I'm not gonna do what he does faulk now. Now i'll go. But i'm just gonna make pizzas like there's no way i mean he was just i put them right up there with prior and carlin man he was just I mean just a worse and and you know applause breaks like richard. Jenny used to get applause. Breaks like not off a bit just residual you know we love you so much. Were just applauding for you. Because we're having such a great time and And it's such a surreal business. That in that moment watching him being floored by him that not only would that become my home club. A year later i'd be opening for him and then it becomes such good friends with him. You know throughout my life and and Go into his house. Yeah and Just a crazy business. You know what i mean. And i loved him and and You know in. It ended tragically for him at forty nine with a gun and it was something that And adams the one who told me. Oh really yeah. I was in I was down in florida. I was at a dairy queen. And i was at the drive through in with my phone rang. And adam said did you hear about rich. And i said no. And he said he put a gun to his head and i was like oh my god and then i didn't i guess i guess the You know the the guy in the dairy queen was like sir. could i glow. I didn't even hear him. You know what. I mean because i was like numb like you. Fucking kidding me. oh i. that's that's crazy well did you. Have you seen him at all. I saw a little bit as i was doing some research and from what. I is incredible. I can't nine how you end up. I know you. I saw him there. But how did you guys end up meeting and becoming his opener and then becoming good friends and again tom right. My buddy. tom. Ryan comes in. Oh guys when when After that night i call. I said tom. I can't because i met tom the comic strip and and in fort lauderdale and He said no. Just come up and just try you know. And so. I started open mic with tom. Toms one who really pushed me and And then we met a dan. Whitney whose larry the cable guy and became would become larry the cable guy eventually and and And we just come rod. You know what i mean and and and and helping each other and supporting each other it was just a beautiful thing and the comedy corner back. Then was tuesday through sunday and the advantage. Because he can't do the same stuff. And i'm like how do you even like if they pay to see you. How do you even try new shit. You know what i'm in. Yeah you don't wanna try new shit on an audience that you know. It's like going to see billy jones lake. Hey i'm working on some new stuff. Come on piano man fucker. You know what i mean. Yeah and and any says you know and the and this is what he said to me. He said what i do. Is i pick a middle section of my act. And i just. I almost do like an open. Mike set with like a few minutes of new stuff You know. And that's what i do. He goes because if you think about it. It's almost like the new bit has to follow bits that already work Do you know what i mean. It's like following a great comic with a new joke. You know what i mean. And i and i was like. Wow that's an interesting analogy. And and and then because the confidence is that the audience if they trust you if they trust you at that point they may like in their subconscious. Go okay me. Is this like we haven't heard this before. Is it new you know. And then but we trust that something better is going to come. You know what i mean. Yeah it's getting the audience to trust you enough that you could do whatever you want even if you're not even if you're killing killing killing and then it's like not killing so much just a couple of experimental bits and then boom you go back to the good shit you know what i mean So but that's that's what i do. So i took that lesson from brian and that's what i do know. Oh that's great. I think that's that's a really good way to do it too. Especially you know i. It's interesting i was actually looking in phoenix. The clubs are still open so they they have performance and stuff and they have some folks. They're not at the level of brian. MTV was channel 49 every once and I want to hear those numbers that pops in my head. I just remember stick Stickley coming on at three PM on Nickelodeon's obstinately stick. Stickley e.
