Fresh update on "saturday night" discussed on Live Wire

"All right before we get out of here, a little preview of next week's show, we are going to be talking to Saturday night Live writer Sam J. About this new talk show that she has on HBO called Paws with Sam J, which is a really cool approach to the kind of Late night Talk show format. We're also going to be hearing some music from amigo. The devil. Plus as always, we're going to be getting your answers to our listener question. Elena. What are we asking the livewire listeners for next week's show? I can't wait for the answers to this one. What is your best advice for throwing a successful party? I feel like that's probably something we can all use a little refresher course on considering where we've all been for the last year and a half. All right, if you have an answer to that question of how to throw a successful party, please submit your answers through Twitter and Facebook..

Kid Rock Spews Homophobic Slur at People Filming Him at Tennessee Bar

"It's not unlike kid Rock to blurt out whatever he feels when he has the mic. He took the stage on Saturday night at a bar in Tennessee and went after a crowd for recording him on their phones now. Security had been telling people to put their phones down the entire time. That was the rule. But kid decided to take matters into his own hands and say, Did you preview this guys and say this through the true? Yeah, Hosting inside you can postings you can pulses, right? With your phone. Oh, my gosh. So he said f your iPhone? Yeah. And then some girls like Yeah. And then he called the people recording him a homophobic slur that starts with the letter F. Yeah, and, uh, the people? Yeah. Who are those people? People that go to kid rock shows, I guess. Yeah, so there you go. Bad. Yeah, It's bad. I like to kid Rock growing up, you know, and being from Detroit. He was obviously big back home. And, uh, I like Kid rock. And if I went to a bar and find that kid rock just showed up to perform, I would be like, Yeah, you would be that person. I'm not kidding. I would be until he looked at me and called me the F. Yeah, I like yeah. Whoa, yeah. Would definitely stay about you, Kid Rock was coming. I would do But even in a crowd, even with a few beers in me, I would literally go. Wow. That was kind of offsides, wasn't I? Just if this is kid rock now Just imagine in 25 years he's going to be a cranky old man. He is the new 10. Fridays (MM #3726)

"The Maison with Kevin Nation. I was scrolling through one of those weird TV internet apps, recently. I think it was to be if I'm not mistaken and I stumbled upon a program. I walked forty years ago was a kid. It was a sad knock off of Saturday Night, Live called Fridays. It ran on ABC and it's where we got Kramer Michael Richards for the first time. Know, I watched it as a kid back in nineteen, eighty to eighty two, I believe. So I'm watching it forty years later and kind of embarrassed, it's really horrible. The one good Saving Grace about Fridays, were the musical guests, some of my favorite bands of those times. And I guess we'll have all times bands, like, Devo, and the carbs they were on, there was some of their first performances. In fact, they had the first television performance of The Clash in America. That was incredible. Took me right back to where I was, as a young man in his late teens, early twenties, but the comedy not so much pressure. Some of it is topical and yes I did live through the Carter and Reagan Era. So I saw what was happening. I remember what was going on. It's funny going back and reliving history of forty years ago, and reminding myself. How much different I was back then as was our world

How Come Only Conservative Media Interview People With Opposing Views?

"How is it that conservative media are the only ones that recognizing alternative viewpoint have month? Ladies and gentlemen, I have a Fox news show coming out this week in our first episode. It'll be Saturday night. Set your DVRs June 15 PM Still thinking of the title, But I promise you it'll be on Saturday night at 10 P.m.. And I promise you I'm gonna have liberals on I know some of you don't like that. I get that. I'm not trying to upset you. I have them on occasionally for a reason. Because what they're saying is wrong. When you come on the show, and we expose it is wrong. Other people see it who are are persuadable. Do it all the time. Here's the number 8444843872 producer Mike answers the phone. What do I tell Mike all the time like Mike? We get a liberal caller wants to object put him through. I'm not afraid of ideas. How does half the country right now? Probably half the planet. They did. Donald Trump colluded with the Russians and the Corona virus came from pangolin because you watch liberal media where they're absolutely terrified of anyone who's a conservative thinker. You go on those networks and you're a rhino. You're welcome. You're David Gergen or some other fake Republican like Nicole Wallace. You'll be celebrated with open arms but dare to be a conservative on MSNBC and CNN. You will be shown the door immediately the first time. Trust me. I've got friends where I'm not going to say and out. Come on the air. But I've got friends who worked there and told me the minute they spoke up for Donald Trump. Their appearances were gone.

"Scott wins and fails. What what are your wins and fails this week. Or i just wanna hide if anybody wants to understand retail or the internet age of brad's first book. The everything store. When i was writing my book the foreign i had to write a chapter on amazon. I read this book. And i thought shit i just can't do better than that It's really it really is the if you wanna understand. I was like okay. I'll start with my fail. I think as a guilt by proximity movement. I think it's just out of control incredible. I understand we expect it from. Tmz we expected from blogs but when the new york times and the wall street journal start writing these articles The the platform have so much credibility. I think they should act with more discretion and realize how much impact on people's lives when they start. Inferring that there's something really up with bill gates with his relationship with jeffrey epstein and don't provide any substance don't provide any any evidence other than. Yeah he he he met with him and then start talking about confidential divorce. Filings i just. I don't think that. I don't think that foots the credibility that is the wall street journal and i think anyways this guilt by proximity bothers me. I think it's a dangerous trend. Yeah okay my win is just the unbelievable talent and unfortunately was overshadowed of miley cyrus when she did that opening that tribute to mother's day her voice yes she has a lyrically. Beautiful and powerful voice didn't love her other sounds but that was beautiful. I agree but i i remember. I remember sitting there thinking god. We're so fortunate to have artists like that brought to us. Pardons are godmother. I think she's an extraordinary talent. Compelling she's telling wrong show you know she should have been the edge kind of it was a shame was overshadowed. I think she's an extraordinary talent. And was in that chad one. That was funny. Chad she was. I think she's just credible talent. He was win as the extraordinarily talented miley cyrus. Well i'm gonna tell rate a woman to win. Which was there was a skit on saturday night. Live murder which was about Mayor of eastbound is so it's really so good. It's so bad that it's good. I have a lot of relatives in that. Part of pennsylvania. Lot of them and i was like. Oh my god. And i was born in philadelphia. That is the catholic church. I think the boyfriend think it could be the priests killed. Her and the boyfriend is the one hiding the ladies away in the in the bar. Kind of thing. I notice is gonna be weird. I'm going with the daughter. What now band is that new girlfriend. No no no no. No here's the deal. It is a great show and you should also watch the murder thing and by the way if you want a victorian murder. Watch the never so. There's all these bad ass. Women and shows women is real area of of And also the equalizer with the queen. Latifah's latifah's doing really well so a lot of bad ass women kick some ass. I really enjoy it. "Including his by the way let me just finish including his entrepreneurial history and i think they've been doing those pieces and that is a that's fair game running for mayor of new york but go ahead. Andrew ja violent on this is andrew. Yang's relationship at bradley task tax attack investor has raised concerns about conflicts of interest if he is elected and literally okay so who is not by by the evidence. Say they roll out here then. Essentially unless you're a junior at berkeley and your only your only accomplishment as writing for mother jones than everyone is conflicted and raises concerns. It creates it. Creates this like when you have some some platform as credible in york times and you have that sort of headline it kind of creates this notion that again guilt by proximity the reporting haired never you read it and you go. You kept waiting for something that appear to be an actual conflict and might not serve the citizens of new york to a greater conflict and any other campaign ever it just like what was the point it felt would i. I'll put the question back to you. Struck me that okay. The new york times does not one yang to be mayor is fair. no. I think he's the front runner no. I don't think the runner and bradley tusk is a high profile. Political operative and pointing out their relationship is important. I may not. I think they didn't lay glove on this particular one and pointing out his entrepreneurial history since he talks about. It is a good idea. So i think this is all about being the front runner. And you're gonna get a story. His wife you're going to get his story but and no front runner thinks it's fair right. Nobody like if if if whoever it was maya they'd be doing like okay. Here's the things let's tell you about her. And when it looks like a lot of people new york by the way. Every time i interview someone Who's in yorker. They're like even friendly but was like this guy like what like and so. I think he's just front runners scrutiny. Some of the pieces will land. Some of the pieces won't look the. Does he actually wrote a great piece of new york magazine about the biden administration. I think she had a great line. She said you know the way that he got attacked by the press through the early campaign especially jumping out of touch. He said they made them bitter and brittle and they're still bitter and brittle like they don't like the press even though you you think about. The trump administration is being bad with the press. She was making the argument. Nobody likes coverage. That's what i mean. And so they're going to. He's the front runner. That's says some of the stories are gonna be good. Some stories are gonna be unfair but they're looking for stuff about him to sort of try to put him in a place because they probably think he's gonna win or he is in front by a lot really quite a lot and you have. It's very fair to complain about an experience. An inexperienced person running complex city like new york. He's a very lovely guy. You both by both know him. But i gotta say i'm like wow. He could have. He could use a little more experience to be doing something quite so serious. That's that's what i think. That's a fair criticism. I think that would be an interesting valid story. I think creating this this notion of wrongdoing. Or i don't know they didn't land neither of them. No one cares about his entrepreneur experience and this one didn't land so new york times those well. We'll see you know approximate guilt by proximity. You're right you're right. And i'm sure they'll be now a picture with someone bad sitting next them ten seats away at a movie theater. Andrew yang uses microsoft windows. I don't know if you've heard but bill gates had hung out with jeffrey epstein. So this guy is not qualified to be mayor. Scott you know you act like newspapers doubt sometimes just not not make mistakes like it's a process. Let's say anyway. Let's go a speaking media. We're going.

"Seen part i see that they were unhappy for a long time. This is not a huge revelation. Usually marriages don't just collapse In two thousand nineteen wasn't that long ago and maybe the pandemic interrupted a lot of people are getting divorced during the pandemic or have decided to escalate escalates already existing problem but i thought the connections with jesse at this point. Or very tenuous at best. He's he visited him for sure him went to the house But still i. Don't i find it a strange article. Yeah i really feels like feeding into this hall right. He's i mean. I think really wealthy people don't deserve a hall pass in the idolatry that exempts them from from scrutineer regulatory standards. Sarah at the same time. I think being Really wealthy means that a legitimate news outlet should start inferring. I mean basically. Let's call this. What it is. He had contact with jeffrey epstein. So they're they're inferring. The bill gates has done something wrong and it not sure what they were inferring. Because it didn't go anywhere it was the whole point that you haven't even by the wall street journal says something like that. Yeah that's essentially what they're saying. Oh where there's smoke. There's fire and i just was in there was i think melinda gates was made uncomfortable by him and didn't want to do stuff with them gates continued at at the time Before he was convicted. It def- definitely was a figure in the philanthropy circles and thought of as a genius guy at back bay. What i don't follow up seeing okay. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this may not be the first time that a wife is uncomfortable with her husband. Hangs out with. I i just. I've heard that a few times before. I have trouble believing that melinda gates i i don't i don't know the relationship. It's none of our business quite frankly. I have trouble believing that their divorce started afraid because she was angry that he was saying it just feels it feels like so. Click eighty beyond it. Was it just feels quite. What's your point here. What's your evidence. What are you sang it. Just and i don't believe i've trouble. And supposedly lawyers are going background. Just felt really if yeah like shoddy would like to see actual reporting here if that's the case and that's the issue. I mean it was the same thing around vaccines that he was put. All the rumors gates has been like a like a magnet for for for for the vacs rumors. Which is which is weird. but it's This is this was a little funny. I was just gonna say i just before i got on here. Someone i'm not gonna go into it. But i was at a dinner. One hundred years ago hundreds of people and epstein was was sitting three or four seats down. Apparently i didn't even meet him. And someone was insinuating. That i knew something. I'm keeping things. I'm sorry. I don't feel safe around you. It was ridiculous. I never even spoke to the guilt. It's not go by association. It's guilt by proximity. It's quite how to respond. Because i was like. There's some like oh it's so sad for shows like was it a dinner of hundreds of people and he was sitting three seats down. And i don't i never even met him like okay. What do you want me to do. Leap the table and kill them at that. Point was weird. It was a weird again. It it was but what was interesting and it's just twitter so i don't really care but all these were like options involved in the scam like literally at a dinner of hundreds of people was so strange at which by the way many people were at by. I don't know how you can like. Make the whole room guilty for being same room. There's a lot of this going on. There's strange there's a. Did you see the going to go. There was a total hip piece in the new york. Times on andrew yang and bradley ties that much of a head. There is a contract. I know i know bradley. By the way and by association. I actually have had lunch with him. Do you think. I don't know what. What okay let. Let's review typical political reporting review. Angler are concerned about his conflict of entity. Only people concerned are people schilling other candidates. And they're big. they're big. Smoking was at andrew yang said he likes scooters bradley yang. I'm sorry and bradley. Task has an investment in lime by the way andrew made that statement before he met bradley. Tusk it's like it was a hit blows don't land and it's like what is the point of this character. You know how i dealt with bradley lot because of the uber steffi work for uber for awhile and so he's definitely thrown some punches and he's you know he he's he's a fascinating figure and i think he's just like a lot of political figures. He happens to be a local on a new york and he was. He was a deputy governor right or whatever. His deputy governor yeah he worked for. Schumer was the mastermind behind the bloomberg election and god forbid now he's financially very successful. So here's the people influencing andrew yang which he's very much a part of that campaign and so he's a high profile political operative and you're going to get that story and i think it's a totally justifiable story And if you're a political reporter i doing that is the question is is there actual influence. We'll see but pointing out the relationship. I think is important. Who's who's the people around the candidate. Who's ahead for this job. Which many people feel he's unqualified for. I know you're a supporter of him. But a lot of people think he's not qualified for this job. And i think that's a legitimate.

NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on Fatal Tesla Crash

"Everybody around here and we've got quite a lot to go through. We've got an update from the national transportation safety board on the highly publicized accident involving accessible vehicle in texas a couple of weeks ago. We've got news on tesla. Energy manufacturing batteries and of course elon musk's appearance on saturday. Night live over the weekend rough start to the week. Four tesla's stock finishing down nearly six and a half percent today to six hundred and twenty nine dollars four cents that compared to the nasdaq down over two and a half percent the worst day in a couple of months for the nasdaq and we did see sector rotation today the dow was only down a tenth of a percent as the dow is generally made up of lower growth more value oriented stocks. So i know the tesla down. Six percent can sometimes feel a little bit rough especially for new investors but for context arc's innovation. Etf so a group of a lot of different stocks was down by itself five percent today. Obviously tesla driving a portion of that but certainly the movement was not just isolated to tesla. Today before we get into the news here you may have heard already but my voices still recovering a little bit. So i'll do my best to get through this but apologies for any disruption from that. I i up today. We are revisiting the unfortunate accident back in mid april of decimal ice vehicle in texas. As i'm sure most of you remember this received a ton of media attention because at the time law enforcement said that they were one hundred percent certain that no one was in the driver's seat of the model s. at the time of impact. You may remember that. At the time we went through a number of different reasons why the seemed implausible. And i felt like law enforcement was speaking far too soon saying they were one hundred percent certain of something without even having done a full investigation yet so too soon too much conviction and this led to massive media coverage of this accident. A lot of scrutiny. For tesla you've got consumer reports coming out and running some test about how they can defeat these safety features built in to help prevent people from using autopilot beyond its intended use case just keeps getting piled on all because of this one quote from law enforcement so here we've got the preliminary report from the ntsb quote. The crash trip originated at the owners residents near the end of a cul de sac footage from the owners. Home security camera shows the owner entering the car's driver seat and the passenger entering the front passenger seat. Was Elon Musks SNL Hosting Gig Cheugy?

"Elon. Musk hosted saturday night. Live this weekend full disclosure. I watched the opening monologue. And i watched the very first sketch jesse hospital and then i milli to because it started getting really crazy and i didn't waste my time but i know you soldiered on watched a vast vast majority of the show. So how was it. Yes so you know. This is kind of interesting moment. i think that on. Snl we're more used to seeing people from the entertainment industry you know assumed the mantle of host and so to have you mask as the sort of you know cultural figure in tech giant. Come on and i think give people a little bit more open. Look at his personality was was kind of interesting. He appeared in most of the sketches. He did a monologue. As kind of traditionally one does and yet did everything from play himself in a sketch to a play warrior l. And a bunch of other stuff in between so the is interesting. 'cause you you mentioned mostly hosts are entertainers comedians Tv movie actors and this is a tech exec Shows about the cult of personality. There i know there was some backlash ahead of the show. What he was announced and even some of the cast members of through a little shade atom. Tober what what that was like. Why was that backlash sure. So we know that elon. Musk no stranger to controversy. And in more recent times you know. He's kind of a provoked criticism and whatnot for some comments that he made regarding the vaccine. And so there was as you mentioned this kind of flap with multiple cast members Throwing shade him and other folks just kind of questioning the decision to this moment in time. Give such a broad platform to someone who had made these types of

"Over the weekend elon. Musk the ceo of tesla and spacex at snl host to his resume to any one of offended. I just want to say i. Reinvented electric cars. And i'm sending people to mars rocketship. Did you think. I was also going to be a normal dude. So what happens. When an iconoclastic tech entrepreneur and one of the world's richest people hosts a sketch comedy. Show let's turn to our tesla reporter. Rebecca elliott find out. Hey rebecca good to talk to you again manda. Thanks for having me. So i just wanna come right out and acknowledge here you and i are talking on a show called tech news briefing. It is not normal. That an appearance on saturday night live would give us something to talk about. Yeah it's definitely unusual. Snl typically taps entertainers to host the show. There are a handful of business people who have done so in the past including the late george steinbrenner who on the new york yankees for president. Donald trump hosted twice Including in two thousand fifteen when he was vying to be the republican nominee for the white house. We don't know at this point. Exactly how the hosting gig came together but elon. Musk has a super wide audience. This was the first time that snl expanded viewership and had live streaming internationally. And so you know. He certainly brought a lot of attention to the show.

"Michael thanks so much for joining me again man. Yeah it's great to be back again twice in a little over a month of pretty honored at this point. Michael rothstein covers boxing for espn and is behind the scenes. Look at clarisa. Shield is journey to. This moment is out now on. Espn dot com. Well michael we are honored to have you back on the show as well because you have this piece. You just reported on clarisa shields. Who is the biggest star in women's boxing. Maybe ever and her event coming up tomorrow night. it's being called superwomen. Some are also calling it. Her story play on history. But i need you to explain to me. What exactly it is that makes all of this so historic well. It's a couple of things. Pablo i is. This clarisa shields is the headliner on a pay per view card and there hasn't been a women's fight. Headlining a paper view card. In twenty years. We're talking last time it happened. Was layla alley and jackie. Frazier light and I don't think anyone listening to this. Podcast probably would remember watching that fight because it's been that long but they went one step further and not only. Is it her headlining. This is a car completely full of women's fights there's four fights on the card and this is going to be friday in her hometown of flint michigan in front of a little under. Maybe two hundred fans because that's what michigan is allowing at this point in this audience is going to have to come through paper view and this is again for classes. Shields and for promoter mostly because this hasn't been done before so there's no metrics on this there is no read on buys would be good or bad all of this is her taking a big bet on herself and who should be fighting. She's fighting marie eve to care who is also undefeated and they feel like. It's going to be one of the best fight in women's boxing this year and probably the best fight. They could have made for clarisa shields. And that's one of the challenges. Foreclosure shields right is. She is so good that it's tough to find opponents that are worthy of are very similar in some ways to. What can alvarez going through on the men's side if you watch that fight on saturday night because they are most just dominant so there are a lot of ingredients their them going to bite into but first off. When was the last time we even saw clarisa shields in the ring so the last time we saw her was january twenty twenty and that was against ivana hobbies in and she won a unanimous decision. Not twin make story the fastest fighter men or female to win titles in three divisions and choruses shields is plan was to fight for times last year. This fight against murray you care was initially scheduled for may ninth covid and did that so then almost immediately once boxing started to maybe possibly come back her and her team wanted to be one of the first fighters back. They went to their partner at the time showtime and they said hey we would like to be on an early card but it just never happened. She had dates in september. She had dates in october. Then she was told. Hey you're not gonna fight on showtime at all in two thousand and twenty.

This video Webcam, type comedy, and they did a good job of of using it as a kind of like. A themed they themed at around that A good handled pan full-time like zoom. Zoom being awkward or. The. You talk about the sports this the sports announcers being bored. You didn't get the you didn't get. There's a sketch like that as well Oh is there. There's a lovely woman that I work with she. She is a receptionist who joined zoom calls weekly for a staff meeting. She is a delight but. How how that sketch resonates with me and not just with her but with just multiple people in the office who all have different levels of competency. It's it's terrific. I love it. "White Wall, in his home. But. Yeah, anyway. So so it it is interesting to me to see how these different shows are adapting and trying to still produce entertaining shows from their living rooms from their home offices things like that and Saturday, night live guy into the mix a little bit this last weekend by producing an episode of Saturday night live. That was not necessarily filmed on Saturday or even at night or live. Or live. But. It was the cast of SNL who are all self isolating staying in their homes submitting sketches in a work from home sort of atmosphere that they brought in a powerhouse. Tom Hanks to to host the show and it was very interesting to watch these comedians produce television with what they had with what they had in their homes and have some actually really funny bits I felt like you. You Actually Watch the show me, what what were your thoughts? I want to ask I do you regularly watch snl like are you do you keep up with us on a regular basis? Oh Yeah we do. We do usually when there's a new episode on, we will watch it on Hulu the next day. With which isn't always the best idea because they don't have subtitles the next day usually and Chelsea really like subtitles and she loves them. Subtitles. Much she must have loved period. Loved it. We'd love the subtitles portion of it probably ten out of ten. Ten on the side. So yeah yeah we we we watch. We watch all the episodes when it come on usually if if we get too far behind for whatever reason that I'm not interested in going back and revisiting unless there was specific sketch that was like, ooh. Let's I got to watch it this this week. like like As. PUMPKINS PUMPKIN ZECA whatever. Yeah that Yeah Tom Hanks Pumpkin. So. "Hey there it's Leo. How was your Passover? I hope that despite all the hardship you manage to find just a little bit of light and warmth in this magical holiday. I hope you had a chance to read the God with fresh eyes and find new meaning in this ancient story of ours. I hope you had a chance to hug. Your loved ones in person or over zoom and to feel grateful for all that we still have even or particularly in this difficult time and I hope the rest of the holiday finds all of us even if not yet free to leave our homes and Wander in the wilderness at least mindful of Piss ox perennial reminder. That miracles happen when you least expect them. So while we couldn't come to you yesterday for another Coupla Chabad because of the holiday we wanted to give you just a little bit unorthodox this evening introduce you to a remarkable new novel. That feels very much of the moment and give you our traditional Jewish joke to end the week and welcome the new one on a cheerful note. Have a list. It gives me great pleasure to welcome one of my favorite authors Sharon Cameron. Hello Hello so. I read your incredible new book. The light in hidden places My wife had the pleasure of editing. I don't want to give away too much applaud. You'll tell us a little bit about it soon but thought it really kind of brought to the fore this incredible story and and this incredible protagonists that we haven't heard about and then life as it so often does took this kind of additional turn and made the book even more relevant because the book is in many ways a book about people who are kind of secluded in small stressful pace and have to deal with extraordinary times and circumstances around them so tell us a little bit about this incredible novel the Leiden hidden places based on a true story. It's a story of two Sisters Stefania and Helena Pit Gorski and this is a story that I had become aware of a long time ago back in the nineteen ninety s when I was watching oral histories that had been done by the US Holocaust Museum. Just just for fun to pass the time. Yes as as one does which would be me that is. I've spent a lot of time doing that. And so I listened listened to the story. That's defined you. Pick Gorski was telling about her life and I was just riveted. I couldn't move off my couch while she was telling about life and basically she was a sixteen year old Polish Catholic girl alone in german-occupied country during the war she had sole charge of her six year old sister. No family no parents. They were destitute on their own. When in the middle of the night there came a knock on the door and on the other side of the door was a young Jewish man. Maxium aunt who had just jumped from a moving train taking him to death camp and he was broken and bloody and he said. Please hide me. And Stephanie. And Helena opened the door and eventually they opened that door twelve more times until they had thirteen Jews hidden in a space behind a false wall in their attic and then came the next knock on the door and this time it was too s s officers. Who Said we are requisitioning? Your House for staff quarters for a new hospital this being put in across the street. And you have one hour to leave or be shot and Stefan and Helena who are sixteen years old and six years old chose not to leave and when the officers came back in exactly one hour. They said well. Actually maybe it's great that you didn't leave because I think we've we've housed almost all of our staff so we'll just take one room and you can stay too so the Nazis moved in so now. These two girls have thirteen Jews in hidden space in an attic at four knots as sleeping in the bedroom directly below them and I'm sitting there on my couch listening to her. Tell the story and it is one of the most amazing stories of resourcefulness resilience heroism and humanity. That I had ever ever heard. They never forgot it. I didn't forget it for twenty three years until I became a writer in and looked for her and found her. And that's the next part of the story but But it was just such an incredible journey for me to follow that journey that they took it was really life changing so as a writer. There are a million questions I want to ask. You won't because I don't want to spoil the incredible plot in the incredible ending endings twists. I mean this is really some some serious Hollywood material here but but I want to know about your approach this books when you first started kind of really diving into it to get into this mindset to get into this period to get into this atmospherics that are so wrought with Claustrophobia and tension and anxiety and fear. How do you? How do you get into these characters? Heads how did you go ahead and try to kind of work your way into into the voice of telling the story? Well I was really lucky In that when I when I looked forced to find pet gore iskoe found was her son Edmund. Ski and edge shared with me. His mother's unpublished memoir. So I had an incredible window into Stefan. Yes mind But then added. I also decided to go to Poland together to research his mom's life so during that trip to Poland. We were able to interview children who had been trapped in that attic with the Nazis. Right below them. We were able to interview Helena. The little sister and they gave me such an incredible View into what life was like for those people what it was like to be a child and to be in such a small space. They attic was not large enough for thirteen people You could not actually stand up the space. She described it. They were lying like sardines stacked next to each other. If one person needed to turn over they all had to turn over. And they had to sit and lay there in absolute silence. There could be there was no. Kaufman's SNORE SNEEZE SIGH. No noise of any kind. Everything could be heard three that floor for how long for they were like that for nine months and I think honestly if it had been much longer they would not have been able to survive but it was. It was a horrific situation. She told me what it was like to have to lie. Still while rats ran across your body. But you couldn't move. You couldn't make any noise and you know it just. It takes my shelter in place that I'm doing right now in my comfortable home with my family with everything I need and puts it in really really good perspective right those of us who complained their Manhattan apartments are just too small for kids. Could really use a little refresher here again. Without spoiling the magnificence of the story. Can you tell us a little bit about how it ends? Yeah I think I think I can Because I really think this with the story there's A. There's quite a few people that know about to find you so with the story. It's really all about the how how did do it and I think that is the amazing part. I think the incredible and to find your story that it's okay to share is that she married one at the men. She saved She married Max who jumped off the train and not at her door and so it was their son that I worked with to write the book and so it was really Such a gift of trust that he gave me For both his parents stories to take both of these stories and put them into fiction when it was so personal you know to him and his family. I will never get over being grateful for the trustee placed on me but that Sharon Cameron. The book is so beautiful and again. If you're looking for a novel that is both a tremendously fascinating untold story from the Holocaust and an incredible testament to the strength of the human spirit. One sixteen year old girl who took the ultimate risk For really humanity sake and also a novel that very much remains as deeply relevant in our time of Sheltering in place. I can't think of a better book. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you my name. Is Jeremy Dabur? And I'm the author of Jewish comedy Series History I'm sure by this point of the holiday. Many of you have consumed a great deal of Passover related content And as a result I wanted to go and other way intelligence that has absolutely nothing to do with Passover at all and the joke the way I heard it I was that it is about the president of the United States to White Eisenhower and he takes his first trip to Israel and he meets while he's there the first prime minister of Israel David Ben Gurion and been gory and asks him he says. I know you're military man. And he says you know I wonder whether you'd be interested in seeing the tomb of the unknown. Jewish soldier Eisenhower says of course. I'd be very honored to do that. So then Gordon degrees and they go over and to Heart's on the and they see this grand tomb. You know all granite and it says on it right. A carved into the tombstone Hyman Goldfarb shorter and Eisenhower. Of course is a little bit Confused because it's the tomb of the unknown Jewish soldiers. I thought that was what this was the tomb the soldier and Ben Gurion and says oh. I see what your problem is. No no you see as a soldier. He was unknown. But as a furrier he was fantastic and with that. I wish you all a very happy. Passover I hope you have enjoyed and I hope the week ahead brings all of us. Good News Shiva to France..

This is one of those this is the story of the Saturday night massacre in nineteen seventy two five members of the committee to reelect President Richard Nixon had been caught breaking into the Democratic National Committee's offices at the Watergate hotel the next year a man named Archibald Cox was appointed when it as a special prosecutor to investigate the incident and determine whether the president had been involved in July Cox issued subpoena for secret recordings the president had made of his Oval Office Conversations Nixon refuse he invoked executive privilege to keep the tapes tapes private until finally months later the US Court of Appeals ruled that Nixon had to comply by then the rift between Nixon and the Justice Department had grown and it was clear the president wanted Cox gone and Nixon still didn't want to turn over the tapes why because the implicated him in a vast cover a few days. It's after the ruling. Nixon tried to broker a deal. He said he would not turn over all the tapes but instead would submit a summary of what was in the parts of the tapes related to Watergate Democratic Senator Within listen to the tapes verifying Nixon's Account Cox's answer nope in a statement published in newspapers on October nineteenth nineteen seventy-three Nixon blamed Cox for not accepting his proposal he called it reasonable compromise and ordered Cox to make no further attempts to obtain information on his conversations in response Cox Fox vowed to continue pursuing the tape recordings but Nixon had another more drastic plan to stop Cox from getting the tapes and put it into action the very next day that day a Saturday attorney general Elliot Elliot Richardson was summoned to the White House back at the Justice Department the Deputy Attorney General and three eighths huddled and Richardson's office. They knew why Richardson was being called all to the White House. He was the only one with the authority to fire Cox. Richardson went to the meeting. When he got back confirm their suspicions the president had ordered him to remove Cox. He refused Richardson was prepared to resign as attorney any general instead then the phone rang. It was White House Chief of Staff Alexander Alexander Haig Calling Deputy Attorney General William Ruggles House Richardson would not fight her 'cause it was now his responsibility to do also ruggles house refused and just like Richardson. He drafted resignation letter next in line with firing authority was. US Less Solicitor General Robert Bork he followed Nixon's orders and agreed to fire Cox Nixon won the special prosecutor was gone but the outcry was swift and loud the unprecedented shakeup at the Justice Justice Department became known as the Saturday night massacre and it triggered public and political backlash that accelerated Nixon's eventual downfall that fateful hateful Saturday night after it was all over Cox delivered a statement on national TV. He told the country whether ours shall continue can you to be a government of laws and not of men is now for Congress and ultimately the American people. I'm Mike Rosenfeld. "More pinks new album hurts to be human available everywhere. Now. Welcome back to bulls eye. I'm Jesse thorn. With Paula pal. She's a legendary writer for Saturday Night Live thirty rock and more along with Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and other she's starring in the new movie wine country, which is out now on that flex you worked on Saturday Night Live for who like nearly twenty years. Yep. And I wonder if during that time there was there was time when you wished you were a performer. You know, I was such a good kid. I was such a like Catholic kid just, you know, went in school just like tell me what to do. And I shall do it. And when I first got there, they said take off your actor hat, and it was said kindly, but it was sort of saying don't have an agenda like really thrive in what you're doing. Because there's already a cast. And it's a wise thing to tell people they are because if you came and just happen to be I was not, but an aggressive person that wanted to just I shall I shall get there. I'm gonna get get on the show. But I also just was so overwhelmed at even the offer to come there. And right. I was I was in such a whirlwind for a couple the first couple of years that I just wanted to do well with what I was doing. And so I, you know, I think the times that I most wished that. I was part of the cast is when we would do something musical I used to write a lot of musical things. And if. We were her music and just, you know, just really laughing and rehearsing it was always a little sad to go. Sit back down behind the camera and just kind of watch them rehearse and realize while you're you're one step disconnected from this that you always did your whole life since you were little so that part of it was a little hard. But I always was such a character in such an old soul that I I sort of knew that somewhere along the lines of my life that I would not have to put grace brain my hair, and I would just be one of those. I always used to love Kathy Bates because she started sort of a little bit late in her life. And then she was just this iconic theater person. And before she was a TV and movie person, and I used to just want to emulate her because I was like, oh, my God just to feel like, you know, yourself and your little bit older, and then you can play these character roles, and and that was my way of of sort of justifying my pain. Of not being an actor. But I also just was having so much fun to. And and there's something the adrenaline is. So high there, even if you're behind the scenes that you feel that same thing that you'd feel as an actor. If you went straight into television, writing or other kinds of television writing or movie writing, it's it's a harder transition because you don't do that high adrenaline stuff as much, but at us L, you always feel like you're pretty jacked up..

"I'm Jesse thorn. It's bullseye. If you had to name one writer on Saturday Night Live. The show's MVP were. And the Wf for brighter. I guess there might be a few candidates. I mean, I like Jack handy, but it might very well. Be Paula pal in her eighteen years on the show. She wrote so many stone gold glasses like just a few. She wrote the copes Anna gas Dyer and will Ferrell's married lounge music duo act sketch. She wrote the Spartan cheerleaders. Robbie cloudy. W. Goes on and on and on omelet Ville and Tony Bennett homosexual, she's written for thirty rock the Oscars the Golden Globes she's had roles on parks and rec big mouth. And most recently, the NBC show AP bio on that show. She plays. Helen, a high school administrator who is overflowing with school spirit and also has a drawer full of hair. Her newest movie is kind of Saturday Night Live reunion. It's called wine country along with Paula it stars Amy Poehler Tina Fey. My script says Don part of that. I don't have an impression my Rudolph. Rachel dra- ch-, Anna gas dire. It tells the story of a group of friends who take a girl's trip to the Napa Valley for a weekend of wine and relaxation and celebration of one of their fiftieth birthdays, the group became lifelong friends during their stint working at a pizza. Place in Chicago. But people moved and got married and grew apart and wine country is about how we tend to those friendships even when life gets in the way in this clip Paula who plays vow is having a heart to heart with Rachel draft. His character. Rebecca, Val is worried that she just blew a chance to ask out apart tender. Here's the last thing I sent to her I have vintage JD hearings at my store would love to send them to you so dumb. She's Jade, you know, she's got like a million Jade things I made a mistake. She's too young for me. Fell. I offer you some feedback. Okay. I mean when it comes to age, the number itself, truly doesn't matter. It's I mean, I wish I wish advocate understand this because she's coming at me. Like, you're fifty fifty fifty like, what matters is how you feel inside. So with all that in mind. What would you say your souls ages? It's like twelve I mean, maybe a little older probably old enough to drink and bone maybe eighteen eighteen and a half almost out of the house. Don't have my own car yet. But I have a bike. Follow foul. Welcome to both i-it's tabby machine. You for having me this movie really feels like I mean, it's it's about girls weekend. But it feels like old home week given the deep relationship relationships in every single person in the entire production. It's you know, it's based on an actual trip. We took for Rachel drenches fiftieth birthday to wine country. We've done two of those trips. I'm I'm still owed mine because I turned fifty before we started doing the trip. So we're gonna do a a retro retroactive trip for me. But we took Rachel and so many fun insane things happen by the end of the weekend. We just kind of Amy and Emily Spivey who co wrote it with Liz cacus cash, they were just like, I think we think we need to write system movie. What was when real thing that really happened on other so many things my? I got bit. But not by a snake? She got bit by a bitten by a black widow spider. She was getting a massage. Oh, jeez. And the person was like, I think that was a black widow like they thought maybe it was a black widow, and we all came out like super relaxed from our little services, we ordered with our robes on smelling like lavender. She looked like shoe spot to die because she thought she was about tonight. The other thing that definitely happened was the night before the actual trip. I went to the hustler store in Santa Monica on Santa Monica in West Hollywood and purchased everyone a very high end dildo. They were actually vibrators, but sort of phallic vibrators..

"Actually, you know, what happened when the when I did the play by play on Monday night football the guy running out onto the field. Brian actually tweeted, so wait a minute. I thought my play was the best play. Right. Right. Right. So he he did he did get involved in that. So I know that it meant something to them not that you do. But it's turned out against broader members. Everything right. Thank you time. Have a great show tonight, Brian, and I hope for a great we never know. It's going to be good or no good or bad. It can be flat or it can be electric. They're gonna have to work hard. And you're not gonna have to. Off to work at all. Thank you. Thank you. So nice to see. Thank you. Nice Nice to to see. see. The UB Tony Bennett. Recruited me to watch state. Anyone? Changes strategy. Where is that? That phone Paul. In the corner. But you. A line drive. Joe, gary. Result. Just want still. Here's did he go back twenty six. But he the big thing is he made all ten of his corner wrecks. The my wreck in the corner. I will be cleared. I picked him on gut intuition. Seeing shape was good. But for the contest pumps at the analytic sexually showed he shot the best collectively for me, sewn, and he greed with me, I felt much better about my picket that time. So excited I actually had to calm you down. Any firm to come in with seven hundred people. Most excited for sure. For some reason, I believe in new genius. So you so much energy forever. I appreciate you believe in me. So how did you decide on that corner? Rack for your. I had just practiced it that way. And that's kind of how I felt comfortable always good there. I actually am not that great surprisingly the right corner. So against the when I it wanna gets you. get you on the coach that I work out with in Brooklyn, Jordan, not he pulled up an analytics she and my weakest spot was actually the right corner. And you're not making any sense. Yeah. And I said that's actually to be honest where I probably feel most comfortable in this situation. And so I just kept it that way when against the grain and gets analytics when you were watching you you'll see this later, but they had the on scream watching Steph when he when he when he missed one. Yeah. What did you think? I got it. Yeah. Well there at the. We we're going to tie, man. No step doing you. Yeah. Nice, man. Great guys things like everybody that was competing. We news pretty stacked field, but it was fun. Even just when we were practicing up there actually Steph was the one that everybody gets ticket turn get a practice round in. And we rebounding for each other. You know, I think that's pretty unique. So when you saw that you knew at that moment you like I got it. Yeah. Well, I knew when you got the money right here to make all of them in order to tie. And I to be honest. I thought that we were for sure going to tiebreaker. Tina, miss a corner three yet. So I was almost getting my kind of warming up my legs a little bit again to see regularly to go. But then. Yeah. Stroke of luck. Saw this one. You ryan. Thank you. Jump. Got twenty about the take off at the same time. They take him. He's up. He's way over. Okay. Plane might take him out. Rachel. Hold us closure. We just did this five minutes ago. And it didn't report his I don't know what I'm doing reach..

"Of course, you probably know whether he denies drama for me. Late unit. So I have cast my lot that John Collins will win the slam dunk. And Joe Harris, no named Joe Harris almost literally no name, Joe, Harris, three point are you agreement with me or disagreement? Well, considering that those were the contestants that we interviewed. I would also be an contestants. Yes, we interviewed buddy healed. For example. We had the opportunity of you dunk contestants. We chose John calm. Right. We did choose them for specific purposes. So this podcast is incredibly biased and going with Joe Harris and John be horribly wrong. But I just have feeling. All right. So we're going to in a little bit talk to Kevin Harlan who's calling the play by play. If you will for TNT tonight, one of my favorite play by play announcers, some happy to talk to him. Then we're going to see how things go tonight. Take you through it. The most important question. We are done tonight. Leap wrap this up. Will I have a voice? No. The next person you may hear from maybe Andrew Andrew. Thank you for doing this show me come on when he said ago absolutely such such a fan. Thank you. And I have your son in particularly son. Just really appreciate you realize. Ready test one two, okay? All right. So we're here with Kevin Harlan is calling wouldn't call this the game. What do you call you calling events all star Saturday just skills competition, which kind of encompasses, you know, all the different things run the night the different three different events. And that's probably the best way to do it. Then that's what I've been doing. And how many years now? Well, a lot since two thousand and two to two thousand one I think it was my first year we first started we had Verne Lundquist in dick Stockton. Yeah. In the third guy came into ninety six internal start doing a lot more of these right around right around two thousand Marv joined about two thousand one two thousand two so I kinda got whatever was left. They would give me this, and I enjoyed it. And I've been doing it ever since. And it's a fun night to do. I have no voice. When you have no voice. What do you do? What's what's your body rested? But but what happens is there's been very few times that I've lost it. But the muscle I build is it gets stronger and stronger as the seasons go on. So I go from football into basketball to college basketball, NBA and NFL three at once. And so my voice gets pretty strong after a while, and I can shove I can shove it through. He's saying I've got. I can shove it through. But there have been times. And I got a really regulate myself. So I you're going through. So you have no inside information on on the tongue. None sometimes really good reporters made slip, and let me tell you know. Slip is the wrong. Word may hint. Okay. But no, I have no idea. What what I don't know. But we really don't I they would rather us just react organically, do you know, what really is we talked to Popovich a Cup, and I feel bad even talking about this what we talked to Popovich San Antonio game the other night, and I forget who I was working with maven rich. And he goes, what do you think of you know, pace in space in threes and all this other stuff? And and pop said, I hate it. I hate it. I don't it's not basketball. It's like it's like it's like a flying London show. It's like they're shooting. They're long rebound. The golden spot up threes, and I used to love the three point contest..

"Families obviously big for us, and I got support. So. Kinda wanted to weave that into the bet. So whoever loses has to pick up the tab for all the tickets anytime we play against each other for the rest of our careers, which. The stakes are high considering how many people show up for our game. So. I got I got to get the best of them tonight. I know he's very confident. Drew its all-star Saturday night. I can tell it sounds like you had a busy Friday Thursday and Friday. What is the correct thing to do? Should I allow the folks to think that I have partied remarkably over the last couple of days, thereby extending the? Farce that this is a wonderful life with all party. No problems fire festival style. Or should I just admit that I'm getting sick yet again, or at least my sicknesses reengaging I've been sick for weeks. And there's no end in sight, which is the better way to play it. Oh, brian. You definitely got sick. Is what's going on, wink, wink, do you care about this goes competition? All I mean, I feel like all use that time eat dinner. That's a good time to eat dinner. Yeah. I think so. Here's a broader question though. Do you think Saturday night is the biggest night of also weakened has it eclipsed? The also game itself now. I think probably the most fun thing for fans is the all star practices. Which is now televised. You can watch that. I'm sure it's on MBA TV. Because I think that you just sort of see guys having fun with each other and natural environment. The game is like more about the pageantry. And the halftime show pre-game stuff. I like the three point contest the slam dunk. Contest is it's an incredible. You know, talk about a prop that it's either. It can be there. Be awesome. And you can enjoy it thoroughly all the way through or it can be like boys this lame, and we don't really seem to know. And I've sat through them to call. The Nate Robinson ehre. Where I I just couldn't wait for them to get over get this over with. A couple of years ago. We got Aaron Gordon Zach LeVine that was a great one. Right. Would you have predicted going in? What was going to be no not at all? So vested in John cones tonight. We are vested in John Collins. There's a little curveball here. Last update that I had was that hawks hasn't approved John Collins jumping over the airplane yet. Wow. Okay. And that they were a little bit worried that he was going to trip on it and injured who who would have thought that hawks would be afraid of flight. Where's my money riba shot? So there's some drama of just from our podcast listeners about whether he will do it or not..

"But they also want everybody hard questions and some of these guys do not like James heart and that came through. So they were being very diplomatic. Some of these guys do not like I was kinda surprised at how forthright some of them were being like somewhere like, well, he gets every call from the refs, and I don't wanna ruin the feature. So I won't say who. But I think some of ours might wind up on their found out from unless I'm wrong. Anyway, I'm Melissa to talk to this next guy. Joe harris. Starting starting wing for the Brooklyn nets and Andrew his my pick to win the three point contest. Wait who Joe Harris? I know Steph. We helped we talked to Seth carry earlier Steph. Curry is in it and everybody thinks of the curry brothers home here in Charlotte. Dirk is in it as a sentimental favorite. But he healed is in it. I mean, it's a loaded field. Anura picking the guy that has generic name Joe. Joe harris. He's my pick for exact that exact reason. Because nobody expects them to win. Okay. So he's gonna come in in a minute. Do you think he thinks that deserve? You will be on sports. That are thinking knows. This is going to be on our podcast who collector pipe. It depends on how good of a liar. You are. Okay. So Joe may think he's doing a sitdown for sportscenter. But actually, he's doing collective talk to him about some stuff getting ready for this three point contest. How is your first all star weekend? It's been interesting little chaotic for sure, but obviously pretty cool experience and just a lot of fun out here, especially with all of my team just got off of serious radio with Jerry and Spencer and we had Rhody around for a little while too. So it's been fun. Yeah. Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. It's pretty cool. So I leave talked about in the past, but you out of the league a couple years ago. And you had a great contract you're putting up good numbers. But when you get to all star weekend and take part in the three point contest is an opportunity. But man, I was at home with an injury. I mean didn't know what I was gonna do. Yeah. It's been a long journey. Yeah. I mean, you look back on it just to see the progression to see where I've calm, I guess even the last three years and just since the time that was traded from Cleveland wave by our Landau, and the thing I kind of, you know, always talk about is that everybody in this league has got a different path of kind of figuring out there. Niche and their role and some people takes a little bit longer than others. Sometimes takes stroke of luck here there for me, just, you know, fortunate to get fraternity with Brooklyn where the organization was just a good fit on almost every level. What was that day? Like when you got traded, and you were hurt and you're like you're going to be out in like you're out of the league. Yeah. I mean, it's a brutal reminder of the business of the day. That was really my first taste of obviously, I had unbelievable experience in Cleveland develop some really good relationships. There learned a lot. But then had surgery on my foot and same day. I had surgery. David Griffin calls me sitting there. You know? Religiously right off the operating table and says unfortunate timing, but we just traded Orlando..
