"The eurovision song contest is primarily. And if we're honest correctly regarded as a ludicrous pageant of dreadful and or baffling pop music. But your revision also heaves with political and diplomatic subtext outside world cups and olympic games. There are few better opportunities than you. Revision for a nation to project itself. One hundred and eighty two million people watched the two thousand and nineteen contest. Many more besides would have seen highlights and lowlights in the social media fades and not only in the thirty nine countries which compete the cancellation of last year's revision song contest due to the covid. Nineteen pandemic prompted an amount of marymount of the every cloud slash silver lining variety. But it's back. This year's eurovision song contest takes place in rotterdam next saturday preceded by semifinals. This tuesday and thursday while this is first and foremost good news for fans of cheesy songs overwrought performances and hosts with suspiciously gleaming teeth reading leaden labor dialogue. Like someone is pointing a gun at them. It is also terrifically exciting for those who appreciate your revision as sort of annual soft power tournament. What are the do's and don'ts of making the most of the national branding possibilities of eurovision who is good at it and who isn't and we'll anybody ever vote for the again.

I've been texting all week long with Bob Baffert Ale back and forth. I did reach out to him after this ruling came down, asked him if he had any comment. And he said, Right now he feels like it's best to keep his comments to himself. The less he says, the better. Certainly I respect that now because concert tour and Medina spirit are now eligible for the Preakness. That means Baffert is now racing against himself for Triple Crown history, of course, since he trains both of those horses if concert tour were to win the Preakness here on Saturday that eliminates Medina spirit from a Triple Crown opportunity earlier this week, I had the opportunity to talk with Jimmy Barnes about that. Who's here? Training the horses on Baffert's behalf, and I asked him What's it like for one horse to be racing against another one. I'll usually come in thursday friday friday saturday. And i just asked if i could come back on sunday with. Cbs again and they were gracious enough. And and so i was at eighteen for most of that that that day and you know it started early because there was weather coming. That's why i was decked out for slab. I was prepared man. I was prepared. And just to hear the roars and not know. Because if you don't attend you don't really understand what the scoreboards me not having your cell phone. There's video boards for. You're waiting for the the operators if you will to enter the scores manually and it may be five minutes after this roar before you figure out what's happening and and you just heard these eruptions around the the course when you sit on eighteen and then i was about probably twenty yards from the walkway after eighteen and watched literally down the aisle of chairs tiger and his family hogging in that moment. Just story that only sports can bring into do it in this environment and in in this atmosphere in this place Just elevated that story to something that none of us probably would have imagined as someone who is the leader of an absolute monster conglomerate with so many people that count on every decision you make. What does this type of environment like. What can you take from this type of environment that you can incorporate in your environment you start with being on the outside looking in the amount of respect you have for an institution and entity In the decision making and leadership And then i've always walked around carry a note pad and think about how they present Their their their sales to fans you know. If you want to buy a pullover a t-shirt we've had that conversation on our office..

"With six hundred, twenty three yards good God in an upset of the defending national champion. So raises a little bit of a quarterback conversation that have here does with that sort of success for Mississippi State and that offense do you believe that there for real in the SEC? I tell you what guys I think that the the Mississippi State bulldogs are GonNa put teams in the situation where they're going to be in a shootout constantly that's what they're going to bring to the SEC. They're going to force your offense to have to alter their game plan because most offenses in the sec they're not built for shootout I mean we're talking about team that once you Have to get into like fifty or sixty point game each time they take the field K J, Castillo played at the level that he played at Baton Rouge I, mean, the Grad transfer from Stanford was just he was relentless even when he had a bad play who will come back out there firing all on also there's a gear. So I love the fact that they're going to put that type of pressure on teams weekend and week out in the conference coach. While, Cagey Costello add a chance to compete against him when he was at Stanford and I was at Ucla and he's always been a very, very impressive player and he's a perfect fit for what Mike Leach wants to do stand tall the pocket he's patient he's accurate he makes very good decisions and and they are going to put pressure on people but My question is when it comes time to run the ball because they're gonNA, get in a game where they're going to have to run the ball against some of these great sec defense are they going to be able to do it? You know and I, and I don't know that yet. So for me jury still out. About like what Mike Leach is bringing to the SEC he's changing it up a little bit. He's got a quarterback that you know is really fun to watch a team. That's really fun to watch but. I'm going to hold judgment right now and and and. More. When when they get in a game that maybe it's just a little bit tighter or a defense is a little bit stronger than Lsu was on on Saturday. All right. Well, let's take a look at the other quarterback. We're talking about that would be dear king who's obviously I think that's become like a weekly segment for us. We all love dear king and what's happening for. Miami now they got Clemson next weekend but coach Yvan time to look at what he's done. A bigger body of work I mean is Miami Endear King capable of contending with Clemson I think they can. They can compete with them. Can they beat him I don't think so yet I think they're moving in the right direction on dear king. He's six touchdowns zero interceptions with secure in the football is critical. If you WANNA win a tightly contested game like they'll probably have versus clemson and he's such a multiple, not just a dual but multiple threat he can stand in the pocket and throwing it out of the pocket and throw. He makes great decisions when he's out of the pocket weather to throw to run and he can really run the football and I love the way. Miami's running the football and playing defense but. We're still talking about Clemson we're stuck till talking about a developing Miami team but listen I I love Derek King I love the way he plays I love the way presents himself as a leader I like his maturity everything about him but I just don't know that they're they're ready yet. Thoughts. Agree with coach I. think that they're probably a year or two away from my actually competing or beating clips. It's one thing to go out there and compete in that. You know what what we call a competitive ballgame wasn't score have to be forced to be competitive or you know maybe compared of early and then gets away late I think there may be maybe a year or two away from that Derek. King is the talk of the town I live in Miami Terry One guy who's really impressed me so far coach is Cam Harris to running back I think cam here's. An extraordinary. Season so far early part of the season he's the MVP of that team because the office goes through cam hairs, the man. Eight yards per carry I mean eight yards, Makara, are you kidding me has five touchdowns on the season already has hit home runs out the gate built like, Frank Gore, Kinda stoute's. Sturdy but he has some speed. So I love the fact that they're running the ball the way they are with the new OC Lashley and it takes a lot of pressure off a deer king. He doesn't go. He needs to go out there and make plays with them to win games. He got a lot of talent around him who who, who are doing special things you guys are just agreeing on everything. I'M GONNA have to stir the pot here. Somewhere. We'll find something for you guys disagree on. It's GonNa be fun to watch moving forward. So all this quarterback conversation, we're going to tell you next.

"Am had some struggles against Bandy, they take on number two Alabama one of the teams in the SEC with the huge win their coach. What are you looking for from Caitlyn Minden? This Cowan Mon- has to play better than he played last week he's got to protect football. Over the past two years, he's thrown nine interceptions each year he's gotTa make plays with his legs and he didn't have to do this against the really good Alabama football team I think that Alabama believe it or not ranked number two is underrated. Okay. I think they're under anything you look at their quarterback. He started plan last November the only quarterback in college football that had a higher quarterback rating was job. All right they've got four returning offensive Lineman they've got water they've got devante Smith, they've got nauseous Harris they've got Nick Sabin. So I think is going to be a really tough game for For Tam you Texas. Let's flip for macy's he action here number twelve north. Carolina looking to start to know in consecutive seasons for the first time since two, thousand, eight, nine, Dez what you got your eye on. A guys take a look at the trenches. Watch the guys in the trenches. Especially when we're North Carolina's on defense I, love their front seven David Plan. Fantastic. So far man going up against Boston is office of line. This group brings in like eighty plus starts this is the veterans group or you know it they see frank's Nettie. He wants to establish the run you WANNA keep Sam how UNC's quarterback off the field. So you're going to exercise some ball control running off his watch that game with chick trenches, US's deepest versus BBC's Office of land. All right. Let's flip over to SMU. They're going to walk in Memphis that never gets old coach. What do you expect him from the number twenty, five tigers this week I'm expecting an an upset look at the balance of Sonny dykes brought to the offense and at shame who show eight, hundred, fifty, two cash shortages second in the FBI look at their running game. All right. Look at T. J. McDonald mcdaniel Melissa's Bentley two hundred and twenty four yards per game an eight touchdowns between them. Great. Balance explosive their average almost forty nine points a game. MEMPHIS hasn't played since September Fifth I. Think they're going to be a little rusty and I think that SMU has a chance to run all over Memphis. This.

"Fourteen format look. I'm with you all the way coach I'm just trying to. All right. What if scenarios? We'll actually take a look at some things we can look at this weekend. This is one of our favorite things to do. By the way before we do that take a look at the College Football playoff. Obviously, this is the timeframe here, the Rosebowl, January first the allstate sugar bowl January I those would be the first round playoff games and then the national championship will give you January eleven twenty, twenty one, no change that even though there's been. A change to the committee. So now that we've taken a look at those states that are in front of you, let's take a look at some of the action that you're GonNa get this weekend we're going to speed through some of the best this week's game. The week also decided College Game Day Got Auburn versus Georgia the deep South's oldest rivalry, the hundred and twenty-fifth between these teams Dez, what are you looking for from Georgia at the quarterback position in this one? I want to know who's going to line up at quarterback for Georgia. We saw happened a week ago when they played Arkansas started with doin. Mathis. Thought he was going to be the answer he just seemed to struggle out the gate didn't play well. So then Stetson Bennett came in, you know he played well saved them. Do I actually came back in the game late you can tell us, Kirby want to get him some. In live actions despite the fact that he didn't play well earlier, not forgetting now J. T. Daniels he's been cleared. He was a pretty good quarterback USC. All right. Let's flip to the next game. Texas am had some struggles against Bandy, they take on number two Alabama one of the teams in the SEC with the huge win their coach. What are you looking for from Caitlyn Minden? This Cowan Mon- has to play better.

"Obviously in in coach, we've got so much conversation about the College Football playoff. This year looks very different. So does I'll ask you if you were on the committee knowing what they're dealing with, and the fact that you may have different teams that have played different numbs, numbers of games how would you handle it? You have to be very, very flexible. I'll tell you what you. This is something that's been unprecedented. Never had this before we understand what is up against and we WANNA do you know what they want to do the best job? So if I was on the committee I, want to do the best job I. could the I test is going to be extremely critical this year. is going to be a subjective call. People, but it depends on the quality of opponents to when you talk about the number of games you also have to talk about the quality of the police that you play. I was always taught that it's not just what you do is also more importantly. Against, so I think that that Mansur is going to be huge this year for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. Coach when you hear. I test. What does it? Say to you on that. How good you look and it's dead set Desmond said I. It's important who you play, and it's also important how you play against those good teams. Are you playing to your championship standard each week in and week out and are you at your best when you're playing against the best because those are the things that people wanna see when Desmond talks about you know the quality of your opponents would it says to me is that you know we're almost eliminating the PAC twelve and I I hate to say that and we're elevating obviously the SEC in in the big ten because and and even now I Say the ACC because Notre Dame being a part of it and the way Miami's playing you know I think that conference is starting to really rise but I think pushing it back is the best thing that we can do I I know we would all like to see rankings because getting crea- it creates intrigued it. It allows us to discuss and debate and have fun with it but we WANNA make sure that we're doing the right thing for these programs and for college football and for the College Football playoff in general and in the right thing to do is push it back be patient. Make great decisions. And figure out who the four best teams are when we make our final decision. So coach from your standpoint, should the committee come out and tell us that there's minimum number of games that must be played to be considered. I don't know that they can do that right now it's like Desmond said, there's so much input unpredictability this year in college football in there's such a need for flexibility that I think that's almost impossible for them to decide right now. Now maybe later on, they will say, Hey, you have played seven games or eight games or six games or five games we don't know what that will be. and. So as once again I keep referencing desmond because he's always so right on is you better play to your standard weekend and week out regardless of who you play and you better be at your best when you're playing the best teams in great because that's the eye test because we know. What's ahead here in terms of picking the final four? Does. Any concern about a realistic scenario where you've got an undefeated Ohio state team that played four or five games taken on in the committee's mind a one loss let's say Bama team that suddenly played nine games. Matt you were. We can play this scenario game, all afternoon and I I don't know Ohio state play if they were undefeated but only play four games I think it would be very difficult for them to have a strong case as far as being one of the top fourteen unless those four games were the four best teams in the conference and they dominated those four games. Then that's when the test comes into play and coach and he said it perfectly that's. What you want to see, you WanNa see these teams that are elevated to search heights that they're playing at their their potential. Playing to their strength every single week especially against stronger opponents and when you see that that weighs more heavily to me, the anything goes so. It's a lot. To learn, we have a long ways to go but to play the scenario, that's the narrow to me. It's just too early but we know that a lot of teams aren't GonNa, play their full schedule because we've seen it already I mean we have games either canceled or postponed every week. So you know what that's going to happen. It's just a matter of how. Many games they play who did they play and how great they looked in those games Dez. You're right. We can play the what if scenarios I'm radio every day. That's what we do. We played what if scenarios? All right. Let me ask you this would this be a year you would accept playoff expansion just to protect whatever the committee has got to look at. I. Don't know I. You know I I like the fourteen format I. "Pack maybe one is right now having a swivel in my chair pest control our editor Andrew. Tuck there and of course you can read more from here more for him Across all of our platforms here on monocle twenty four. I'm happy to say Jew. Then they is still here with us. Also Andrew is joining us on the line. Hopeful- hopefully from is it a sunny perch this morning must be. I think the weather's good in London. Well Yeah IT'S BEAUTIFUL. The Sun has cracked tile and just echoing everything giving saying there's been lots of messages from central government. Don't enjoy the weather. Don't go outside too much. Don't go and be friends. Don't go dead have a drink outside or anything so Women to appreciate it from afar. Luckily at the tiniest roof terrace but suddenly become one of the best asses About the House that we have so I'm griped somewhat out that Andrew. One thing which is getting a lot of attention Bloomberg has a very good story this morning. Which is is looking at this ongoing problem in the UK with with small businesses. We're now two weeks along and over one hundred thousand businesses applying for these these loans. People just not having access to them. I just I wonder you know on one. You know a lot of small As small entrepreneurs small business owners It's a story as I said that we've been we've been following. Are there multiple moods in London at the moment on one side? Okay behave in the sunshine. follow what needs to be done and then also just a reality of of the daily grind setting in and and of course how people are going to have to respond and deal with this. And how do you move forward over the next few months? Well it Bruce La- I think that they they hinting this morning. Those two bits of briefing. That went on this morning. Neil thugs and he's one of the Cessnock socks and he's won the advises the government said by the end of May. He would imagine that would be enough testing in place and Enough tracing going on you'd be able to lift quite lots of measures not going back to normal but then had this other message from another adviser government Professor Grandmet as saying that's still going to have to look at her immunity because even if you down number you're left in a corner with nowhere to go speaking friends who don't come to the two friends who run them an amazing tiny garden center here in London. Now they ordered clones for this season. This is the biggest time if studying plunge ten thousand pounds worth punk coming into that warehouse. What do you do them? They're not allowed to open so they're trying to rapidly move online but it's not the same people come into a tiny garden center and onto them browse and touches all preplanned. You're going to do with whether you want to context so those people are shoes they employ. I think twelve people so those people to kind of earning that income. And then you just say this is echoed again and again and again. So it's scary people how they bounce back and all of these people found it almost impossible to get money off the government and I must say. Hey We have this five o'clock briefing. Every single day from from the government health official normally in a couple of minutes to come on and talk about what's happening the numbers the plans for that department etcetera etcetera and they become less and less credible every single day. I watching Hanko yesterday. All he's done so many utahns through somebody through something at the TV. Yesterday I was like so so angry. As you said they're just trotting out the same thing. Repeating repeating slogans aren't the Andrew and then it's like okay where where are the solutions. What are we going with this? And the tone I find the tone Of course people to say hi so they need to be kind of an urgency. Tha He sounds like he's talking to five year old and I don't think it washes the people I it'd be intriguing to see what happens on the other side of this. He's somebody WHO's GonNa keep commission because he just does not come across as credible and then they have. They seemed kind of share the bud and by bringing the health officials and we have some very good yesterday talking about the death of his head in the house but again the tone was funny. Is I see we understand the seriousness of it? If it's meant bit me a warning to us to stay inside. We've that bill already and you see that from B. People's behavior so I just don't like the tone about and I don't like the fact that they just don't know what they're telling you and the other thing tiny. It's a quick. I'm not tired of everyday people since the numbers are reporting this morning. The numbers really doesn't make any sense anyway because you see the total death so the twenty four hour period before they often don't include community data and there's often a real lack of two or three days reporting that evening hospitals before the added to the number so it's become a very disappointing event at the end of the day Juliette. There was a poll here in Switzerland recently. Just saying that public trust is pretty is huge. It's almost like ninety percent are following with what the government is saying you as a as a newcomer Switzerland. Have you been impressed by the daily briefings? We have similar either two or three o'clock every day here with. What's your take. Been impressed than I think. In general the Swiss are they trust their government and they trust them to make the right decision at the right time and to take into account the psychological sides. And I'm wondering Andrew Boris Johnson's little selfie video that he sent out yesterday talking about tone and everything. Wha- what what? What was your opinion on that? And what are your people saying about? Stay home stay focused. Let's end the clapping for the NHS. Dennis about that under the clapping is amazing. We went out on on Thursday. And it's only the second week ahead on Thursday. The clock and it took a guy down the road. I could never sport where he is. He's GonNa trombone he's lost and other people to bring out Paul than buying them. And the cacophony was much louder. I think in community people to self policing and that that doing that and they they they know what has to be done for Boris Johnson. I would just say that. It is very difficult being prime when you're in your bedroom. And that's what he is. Now he's he's he's he can't go to the press conferences he he con- engage properly and a slightly perspiring prime minister on his zoom cool. Just doesn't wash on Sunday. We're going to have the queen address the nation She's any two or three times before in this full. Not She's going to be giving a message to the country and I think that she will steal a March. Because you know she will be looking regal but even having a bad time because she just doesn't know me live with her husband and the two of them had to kind of live together the different types of relation. Yeah Andrew Tuck in London. We're going to have to leave it there. As we approach the top of their. Have a lovely day on on your on your small not-so-small Terrace. I've seen it before you have to leave it as well. Very good saying you plans for the rest of the day terraces well right well. We'll we'll we'll be able to see if there was a tan lines this time next week Thanks to Andrew who had on earlier of course James Chambers and Hong Kong Wilson in Tokyo and thanks to our producer today. Marcus hippy. And of course our sound engineer back in London I'm multiple on. Saturday is going to return next week. But don't forget I'm back tomorrow at the same time with monocle on Sunday. Thanks have a great Saturday goodbye.

"This funny. How many people get these things wrong? I kind of jazz clubs. What made you build it like this? Everyone's got an opinion about design but join on a journey to cut through the noise. We sit down with the design greats. It's just bloody minded inquisitiveness really and have you covered on everything from architecture. Product design to hunt and fashion to. There's so many collections being designed. Actually there may be easily lifespan on a designer's role at the helm of a brand. And of course we're all the key events in the design calendar with in-depth reports from our global network of correspondence. Two and a half hours by train from Amsterdam lies the historic city of master. Which every year has the happiness tae fat fat monocle design? If you guessed it is Monaco's weekly designed show tune in every Tuesday at twenty hundred London time or download the podcast on itunes or spotify. And you're back with each other. We're live in Zurich. It said just seventeen forty two in Tokyo sixteen forty two in Hong Kong ten forty two here in Zurich on a very very sunny Saturday. I think it's going to get rather warm. Do they? Linley here Looking you'RE GONNA. You're looking at toasty in that top. Anyway but it's fine. It's over keeping reasonably cool in in studio here before we went to James in Hong Kong. You're doing your piece out of the Kodiak they're leading on this fifteen thousand fines handed out in the last days. Yes people even their houses all over Italy. Just tell me what do you WanNa say the coach Jeff? Something else cody at end. Just look at one of the articles. Were Antonio Pulido. Who SAYS LESEAN THEIR MEDICATION? There's the syndrome of those who are escaping or who are sneaking out and everyone believes that the viruses elsewhere and it's not where they but he. He makes a bit of a job at the Swedes. Saying the Italians are being a bit like the Swedes. Either not staying in lockdown. They're not seeing their homes and you know usually the Italians are portrayed as those who follow the rules perhaps less than their nordic neighbours. So there's a bit of a little bit of gloating there. Perhaps but he does make a very good point. He says it's really hard to keep your distance when you're in the narrow alleyways of Naples for instance or in a small neighborhood little market in Rome and the little piazza's it's very hard to keep your meter distances. And also he makes the point of an elderly person in. Sicily is not gonNA go online on Amazon to order. They're the groceries or their cigarettes if you want so. The good news is that apparently people are not taking their children out that much in this bit of controversy. Whether you could you couldn't take them out with you and actually Yukon. But can I have my moment of spirituality? You take take your moment one minute but I think there's something interesting about this piece. Though which is of course Italy versus Sweden into compare the two but also Sweden's official policies and rules are very different. I was I was even just having a little bit of scattered around. You know you can look at many. Many things closed all over Europe. But if you compare Amsterdam versus Zurich versus what's going on versus Stockholm Stockholm very much open for business? Today the department stores are open. You can go to all kinds of specialty store as you can go and get your haircut. You can do all kinds of things and you on that. The Swedish government is saying also you know just they. You can't stop this. It'd be very. It's almost a constitutional challenge to sort of lockdown The country so in a way. It's almost an officially sanctioned. That okay we have to let people do what they want to follow the rules But we're not in a situation where we can be imposing maybe the same heavy-handed Saba call to Conan Setup that we certainly have In Italy at the moment and as my colleagues room say we do tend to be not great great rule followers no such a such a st okay spiritual spiritual mom reality while the pope went on air unless as newscast in Italy to it was it was obviously a taped message and he's just called on people to make gestures of tenderness towards those who are suffering. You talked about the elderly small children and he his message was the pope is close to you and also please pray for me. A he has. He has an elderly person. He has been tested and he. He didn't come out positive but he kept telling the you know the potent knows what you're going through and Francis was saying it's a moment this difficult for all of us. Please be generous and help your neighbors. And he said in this moment of the physical distancing if you want to be creative in showing your love for people thought that was rather nice and then On that note there was a very touching if you want a little profile further back in the in the in the pages of data where they profile a postman in bed gumma bed. Komo one of the hardest hit cities up north in. Its Leeann actually supposed to woman. What is the expression for that? A female postal worker. But yeah she's she's person host person and it's very touching she says she she's reflecting on going to people's doors ringing the doorbell and no incomes and so many people who have passed away and she. She lost several elderly relatives in this corona crisis. And I it's just a rather small Look at a life in a little village and how this global pandemic it and when you look at the little small stories everyone has has been affected by it absolutely. We're GONNA go to the Financial Times in a moment but As I said at the top of the show and we every week we have either Andrew or myself of course they have calms over over the weekend We heard from Andrew in the last hour. I also entered into an outstanding piece Last week in his was really managed to London And just a great love for the city and all the London is is going. Through a bit of a Punchier View. This week five little observations about the city and is going to join us at the moment but I listen to his. Call them for a second.

"And welcome back to Zurich. We're alive and you're with me. Julie is here with the papers. We'RE GONNA BE TALKING TO JAMES CHAMBERS. Our Bureau chief in a Hong Kong in a moment. I'm sure you'd like to be in Tokyo as well from time to time. Juliet you. You took us to. We did have Swiss papers out of the way before we go to Hong Kong Something from that's good okay. Okay here's your headline on created. Drop before he cars up you control as you know Too many people still going out even though they have these draconian well. This is what the leading with on a Saturday that we're well into this now. Of course not nice weather probably all over Italy. And and and what are they? What are they saying? As a result in in the last forty eight hours fifteen thousand fines were issues thousand industries. Yes so people who are caught. You know what we now are. We in H- we're in the hundreds at territory. If you get a fine now in Italy it's up to four thousand okay. Yeah yesterday talking to a colleague in Rome and she said I do take. They have six year old seven year old son. I do take him out on his bike and I said the finest pretty high. She's at nine. Oh but we're just going crazy in here so I'm willing to risk and she's not talking about a millionaire or anything but it's just that everyone is going quite nutty and as you know the weather's really good in. Rome is very warm so yeah so a lot of finds being issued and you've probably heard just like in France you have this altitude tickets unit that you have to. It's a self written documents in Hawaii for adults exactly exactly and so. I was talking to another colleague who is saying that. Her husband visits his elderly mother out of town outside of Rome and he takes four different certificates with him so according to at what point he could be stopped at a roadblock he'll put out a different one either it's once he's going to supermarket if he's close enough to home and close to market or once stating that. I don't know that he's got to go visit his his elderly mother because she's got medical issues so but they're still I don't know is it in their nature to sort of want to flaunt the rules for very very human reasons. You know I mean getting out getting your little kid out the house. Because he's going stir crazy and you don't even have a terrorist is very understandable. I guess wanting to visit your elderly. Mother is understandable so yes so a lot of fines also businesses that are actually doing business despite there being banned and young and then of course there's always the ongoing issue of the prisons. Yes Yeah I don't think that's just Italy. No I mean we've been telling Switzerland last night In Geneva a bit of a flare-up as well prisoners of course having issues with the conditions In Geneva and they had to call that extra reinforcements there as well. But I think it's also it's it's a mixed picture in Switzerland I was talking to A banker friend in Geneva and he said that his feeling is that in the French part of Switzerland certainly in and around the Geneva area people are not behaving maybe as well or at least the same sense he gets if people are in Saint Gardiner Basel or Zurich And then as we know there's been a special series of measures as well just into Chino in Switzerland For the Italian part of the country. Where there's you know they're asking for over over sixty five you really need to say it and and and the way this is. Actually it's a rule you cannot go out. Of course. They've sort of run in a run into locked horns with the Federal Council and burn even though the federal government of course agrees it should happen. these are these are issues that at a federal level and maybe not at cancel level So of course. A lot of administered time at taken up we are. Let's come back to the Italian papers in a moment. I just want to jump over to Hong Kong James Chambers. Our Bureau Chief. Is there a good afternoon? James James Good Afternoon Tyler. How you very well. How a lockdown it would you five six days away from seeing the freedom of the streets actually probably eight hours away. My Love Lockdown for me finishes at midnight tonight so it's my last day of a prison. Oh freedom depending on how you look at it but no no bars or pubs to go to. I believe that there's at least a two week suspension now on on such venues at at this point or is that is that fully confirmed now or not so this. This new the newest the news in Hong Kong is the government is shut down places that exclusively sell alcohol so Baas and pubs. That came in quite symbolically at six pm yesterday so Friday just after work when in normal times a lot of people in Hong Kong would head to the ball on wind down with a drink so a lot of people did go to that BAA yesterday just to see what this rule actually meant in practice and a lot of had to shut but there are the kind of these loopholes where your bar and a restaurant so you found a lot of last night will ordering a lot of food so they could still continue drinking their beers and on that. Yes this this new phase that were in Hong Kong and of course seeing something similar down down the track in Singapore As well is the analysis and I guess the reflection on what is happening. This is all the second wave this. This called for people to to return back. So as we're mostly seeing that this this new spike Is is really people who have returned back or are these also just pockets of infection that that might have already been there and have somehow rumbled up again. I think this is a kind of a belt-and-braces approach because you look at the numbers. It's still people coming back from abroad So that the latest figures are we had forty five new cases thirty four of them would travel related most of them kind of students coming back from other the UK or the US when it comes to people who actually picking up infections although the virus from balls. We're looking at about six of the remaining nine so I guess you could say that the government still just being very thorough. There was there was a time when I think the government got a bit angry and and so did a lot of people here when about two or three weeks ago when people when when people are feeling more comfortable they out there on the streets. They were drinking outside of boss particularly foreigners who weren't wearing masks and then when the numbers started to take up again it was kind of blame going on. I'm trying to suggest that the foreign population in Hong Kong that weren't being stringent as As the locals. So there's a bit of that is a bit of kind of trying to make sure that everybody follows the rules and the feeling that this kind of ban on bars is targeted on that community and just going just going back to also just leisure time tennis court said beaches et Cetera What's the government's position on? Not because I mean you were reporting this very well James. A few weeks ago it was the those first days people were feeling good. Maybe there was a bit of it. Overstep on on some size but beyond bars and pubs et Cetera. Et where else are we? Seeing a bans on gathering yes late. They bands like shut down a lot of public facilities a month ago. You're swimming pools and things like that but you know the parks are still open It'd be difficult to close them because they normally open twenty four hours. Beaches are closed. Technically but of course It's very hard to police that most other things have been close gone last week. So we had James Cinemas k-tvhe Mah Jong Policy was one that the chief executive seemed to be resisting the hottest. It seems the only one that she won't because down for now and it seems common with the world is headdresses in salons. That seems to be the last place that remains open. So a lot of places are shuts. But you still get people on the streets doing that. Exercise and walking around freely. I mean today is a very solemn day in the Chine. China mainland China Taiwan and Hong Kong. It's the Jinming festival which is a tomb sweeping day when families go to honor their ancestors and clean the gravesites burn incense. So that's that's going to be a bit different this year. Because they've put a cap on the amount of people who can gathering Publix or four families older families having to go in in two groups or not even go at all and there's been a lot of that kind of hand clapping for for the health workers a lot of the big skyscrapers that have led lights on the outside of being kind of beaming. Message support this weekend. So I guess this this whole idea of honoring. The dead takes on a new meaning this year. James what level of let's say of Solidarity. Do you see between Hong Kong and your neighbors over in Taiwan. At the moment of course there's been various flare ups as as there always are When it comes to Taiwan of verses China and Taiwan as it felt there. They're not getting enough recognition of course not part of the WHO Did they obviously they? They they locked Dick diplomatic recognition in in many corners but they they said from a benchmark point of view. They've they've done a number of things. No one's really paying attention to the Madame Hongkongers feel about their relationship to to the Taiwanese. Well Hong Kong and Taiwan to feel very close because they both feel that the plenty of pressed by the mainland by Beijing and when during the protests in Taiwan was a Balto for a lot of Activists here who wanted to try to escape the long arm of of Beijing and so many of them fled to Taiwan or decided to move that. But it's been sliding different this time around because Taiwan. They've they've probably responded The best to this and the gala respect for it but they shut down that board is very quickly and they shut out Hong Kong so very early on. We went to allow to go to Taiwan. And I guess that seems to have Chasing slightly because it was very much everyone looking after that road and Looking at their own Mitchell island and so that that feeling of of salad solidarity's cuts off for a while. Because nobody can travel. They used to be loads and loads and loads of flights going back from Taipei to Hong Kong. But that came to a stop a long time ago so I think that solidarity is going to be a cutoff for now But of.

"We're testing people When they need to be tested and then the people around them where identifying clusters And you know it's it's a waiting game at the moment it's unclear whether that policy is going to be effective or not at the moment. The numbers are are good but they are definitely increasing. You know we've been talking about this lockdown It it sort of feels like you know the phoney war situation where we're waiting this lockdown. It's not happening. But numbers are going up. And I think particularly Tokyo obviously are the places not so factored but that that it seems to edge closer and closer to more of a serious down but no soccer's bad as well and Tokyo decision to keep the schools closed at least until may you know. Obviously that's the that will be open to discussion. May but I think Tokyo's the big discussion at the moment. Just because the numbers here are worse and You know the testing issue You know remains to be proved. We're talking about it all over the world aren't we who has got it. Right is is testing the answer and not clear. An Japan is obviously decided that the moment that mass testing is is is not the answer. If you're just before we go. I is much of a discussion if you look. In the pages of the Asahi Shimbun the Yomiuri Shimbun. The Nick Gay is is there. Also a discussion. You're talking about a triple digit increase in the hundreds. It's not it's not thousands like we're seeing elsewhere. We're talking about a country which has over a hundred million people. Is there an ethical debate? Also in the Japanese press about it. What is the trade off here? A completely closed society that you're going to close down the world's third biggest economy because you're in you know you've got thousands of cases potentially But versus of course cedar key closing down you know one of two major economic engines on the Asia Pacific. Now I mean. That's a huge discussion. The business angle is absolutely massive and I mean clearly they do not want to shut down the economy. You know the repercussions just two enormous. So yeah that that's a big discussion you know. They've been offering emergency loans. And you know the the take-up in Tokyo has has has been quite extraordinary. These emergency loans for small and mid sized companies in P- it's already the request for assistance has already gone over a billion dollars so already people are hurting. So the idea that in the potential for the economic harm with a full lockdown is obviously really terrifying the government. And they're doing everything to avoid that. So yeah I think that is. That's going to be a big big discussion in the next week or so. I think you're right about the numbers that you know when you see what's going on in Europe Obviously it's no nothing like that. I think what you know. And this is what the. Us Embassy was saying with lack of testing. Are we about explosion of cases? We've been talking about that. We just don't know. What do we know if there is an explosion? Then what will happen so I think at the moment the idea is. Let's you know the sort of holding pattern. But they're putting in place. These emergency packages. They're talking about next week. There's going to be financial. Assistance for households are hurting is going to be a cash handout. Not that much. I felt they were talking about three hundred thousand yen which is about two and a half thousand euros And that said that's potentially coming in this supplementary budget. That's coming up. Funeral Wilson in Tokyo will of course keep following this As as you're listening to Monaco on Saturday said just coming up to twenty six minutes past the hour when we come back we. "Good morning we're live in Zurich and you're listening to Monaco on Saturday coming up. Japan is warned that is not doing enough to halt the spread of cove nineteen. Meanwhile even the most conservative companies are rethinking ways to do business in a country that has been reluctant to embrace the idea of working from home. We'll hear from articles bureau chief in Tokyo. Fiona Wilson will also be in Hong Kong where bars and pubs have been ordered to close for two weeks. All that had plus a roundup of the day's papers it Saturday. The fourth of April live from due for ninety here in Zurich. This article on Saturday. Good morning we are live in Zurich. You're listening to Monaco on Saturday with me. Toddler lay and just a couple of things across our going to be going to Japan. We're going to be talking to are are few and a Wilson of being Hong Kong. Of course a little bit later As well it's the fears waking up right now. It's Saturday the fourth of April. We are live in Zurich and this is monocle on Saturday just before we move on with of course our our guests and a couple of other topics. Let's just look at what's happening around the world. China has observed a three minute silence to mourn the victims of the country's corona virus outbreak. The White House has been accused of sending mixed messages over weather at the. Us public should wear face masks. Police robot is patrolling the streets of the Tunisian capital Tunis to ensure that residents are observing the lockdown. We have a great lineup. Say we're going to be talking to Wilson to James Chambers in Hong Kong as well but I'm happy to say that Juliet Lindley is here Pity interesting start. Don't know what happened at control base back in London but anyway let your good morning very nice to see you. Good Morning. Good to see you again. Tyler how are you? I'm very well so since you were last year. Which was just six days ago. We've now got you in on a Saturday. Why we just talk about the week because I guess you must be somewhat happy that Easter holidays here. So you're you're out of what has been almost three weeks of four weeks of home schooling. Now it's two weeks two weeks of home schooling and yes. I have to admit it is a bit of a relief Yes don't need to open up all those Ipads and get the kids online and time for their online registration and all that but that said like so many parents around the world as Easter break approaches. Everybody is wondering well. What are we going to do with the kids? How much online yoga can you have them doing? In the living room How many sprints can you have them doing on the terrorists? If you're lucky enough to have a little garden maybe you can have them go out. Maybe even do an Easter egg hunt. Who knows the other that? Yeah so it's a bit of a bitter sweet moment With that though of course. There's there's been a lot of discussion In Switzerland we can't threatening noises but as we were saying the last hour There there's been certainly the federal council's with Minnesota. Okay anyway don't do what you want. But of course we're not going to prevent you and this is a time of year that normally around Easter time people had south. If you're if you're a new surname if you're in Zurich if you're in Basel people tend to head down to Chino Which of course is the Italian part of this country at an area which has been particularly hard hit. We've seen a lot of stories right now is saying that. Of course they haven't quite reached the peak. They think that probably the next four or five days is going to be very critical time. The last thing they need is then the north of Switzerland descending on on the region. What does that mean Juliet for people who are here in Zurich because I think that there is there is obviously a huge fear with good weather that That things might might unravel a little bit. That is indeed the fear. Isn't it tyler? We are seeing news that the interior ministry saying they're going to increase police presence To indeed avoid people from rushing down to the south to have their resort to end their middle winds in teaching and honestly. That's not on the Yukon Zurich. Is it a police presence and you never see police cars in the city? I've never seen the cops in Zurich spending. That's that's nice gray boxes and cameras which do at a very efficient job as we know yes so so interior minister ambassador is indeed urging people not to head south saying indeed to the peak hasn't been reached yet but we are seeing more people out and about the weather is great. I have to say ever. Since the Dan was announced mid-march it's never been Sunnier or warmer in the city. Has it so it's GONNA be tough to keep people in and as as you were saying there hasn't a clear demarcation of what exactly is locked down in terms of in relation to say Italy where you absolutely are not allowed to go up and so people sort of well? Can I just go for a walk on my own? Yes you can but if we all go for walks on our own and we all go down to the lake all of a sudden you're not just three people maximum five Do do we want to maybe start with The papers We can do this at a leisurely pace today. There's there's no great no great rush but where do you WANNA start? Let me start with the tacky targets on targets on tiger. Okay which again for our listeners. Who are not familiar with the with the target. The target is one of the newspapers of record in in Zurich and German speaking Switzerland. It is of course You know they're in line with with with the ends Ed Zad but one would say not as widely read beyond the borders Switzerland. It's much it's almost feels exericse paper in a way where the wash is like. Okay so what are what have you found well now. Of course they're headlining. This is double the emergency loans program to forty billion francs to stave off insolvencies. And I mean as we know in just one week companies here have taken out. Fourteen billion francs in state backed loans now. Finance Minister really matters saying that. Four hundred thousand small companies as struggling and most of those companies employ less than ten people and businesses. Just just as background. Businesses can borrow up to twenty million francs tyler at a lower interest and they have five years to repay their debt. But that said in the target. They're saying how the government blocks plan by Interior Minister Bissett to inject one hundred million francs into creating more. Kinder- clipper into more daycare centers. Because as we've talked about before on air and off air for working parents having your children at home online schooling coupled with everything else like cooking housework all of that is is is debilitating in a way a lot. Parents are really sort of demanding. That aren't they maybe they are. I mean I that I thought over the into the heart of the kindergartens. Wh when you walk around I mean compared to other and say well lightening compared to other cities around the world. It is quite interesting That that here there really seems to be already enough of a safe to. I know it might be going to territory here right now. Of course it's what's in. Everything costs a lot here. Prohibitive for a lot of of of let's say so. So you're you're upset that Mr Bell that he he blocked this hundred million set and another thing. That upsets me is on page. Twelve of the target of tiger. They're looking at the issue of alcoholism. And Are we drinking more under lockdown Apparently yes one is drinking. More under lockdown no bars no pubs but at home and perhaps one tends to drink even more when one is within the four walls of one's own home so anyway so they're looking at At numbers they said. They don't have statistics as yet of a spike in perhaps violence linked to alcohol. But that is what some are concerned about and perhaps expecting and then there's a little I wanted to do you think there's too much attention right now on. It's almost domestic. Violence is the only other mental health story that we're time on because you you see the World Health Organization talking about it and it sort of like other sort of parallel issue which of course it is serious but I don't think that enough of a light is being shown on many other aspects that are going on as well as health or mental health. It's like I don't I don't see a lot on that for example And even the the mental health of small business owners were everyone sort of concerned about domestic. Violence were Lotta people living in the same four walls for a long time. They can still. They can still go out so I I think we need to be expanding this beyond the notion of of course. There is violence in the household. You have a point. I mean Y I. I haven't seen any statistics but I'm expecting to see Numbers for let's say even suicide of of small business owners. I mean I think in Italy there have been some Some bad news coming out on that front so Yes domestic violence. Isn't the only thing out there. But it is an issue in your Locked up and locked down absolutely. Let's go back to the story though that they're running about this. The potential alcoholism. I was just going to wrap it up by saying that on the front on the front page. They have a little cartoon that you're delivering your daily deliveries arriving quite soon course. There is a boom in online retailers. That's for sure. No the cartoon just has a has a gentleman who's clearly a shop that selling alcohol and he's on the phone saying Yep all the movies gone more or less and then behind him. There is a pile of corona beers untouched. Right well you start. They're also stopping production of krona beer as well. We can do this and other day to get to the bottom of why. It's even called Corona virus. I never well well. Covert nineteen or why? It's not called Wuhan virus and many other things so I do I do I. Have you read that story? I don't I haven't seen that story the krona story. So maybe that's at the deep investigation that we that we need to look at on the topic units very good segue because tomorrow morning on Our Sunday program we have Chandra. Kurt here In the spirit of maybe having a drink at home. Chandra Kurt of course is a Swiss wine expert and she will be telling our listeners telling us What is tasted have around the table across Easter And certainly at ten o'clock on Sunday morning Which I think is also completely acceptable as this of course the global show. So it's it's after five o'clock somewhere in the world thought the world so that's GonNa be tomorrow morning from ten o'clock Zurich time here on Monocle twenty-four are we done with the with the papers sake. Yes but I would like to point out. I think we we touched on it..
