"Sri Lankan president fleece the country amid economic crisis by Christian Francis and critique, Associated Press, Sri Lanka. The president of Sri Lanka fled the country early Wednesday, days after protesters stormed his home and office, and the official residence of his prime minister, amid a months long economic crisis that triggered severe shortages of food and fuel. President go to buy out Rajapaksa, his wife and two bodyguards left aboard a Sri Lankan air force plane, bound for the city of male, the capital of the Maldives, according to an immigration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Rajapaksa had agreed to step down under pressure. Prime minister ranil vicker masinga said he would leave once a new government was in place. Lawmakers agreed to elect a new president next week, but struggled Tuesday to decide on the makeup of a new government to lift the bankrupt country out of economic and political collapse. The promised resignations brought no winds to the crisis, and protesters have vowed to occupy the official buildings until the top leaders are gone. For days, people have flocked to the presidential palace almost as if it were a tourist attraction, swimming in the pool, marveling at the paintings, and lounging on the beds piled high with pillows. At one point, they also burned the prime minister's private home. At dawn protesters began chanting against the president and prime minister, taking a break at one point as the Sri Lankan national anthem layered from speakers, demonstrators stood still with their backs straight and in silence, a few waved the flag. I am not happy he has fled, he should be in jail, said Malik de Silva, a 25 year old protester occupying the president's office. He has taken part in protests for the past 97 days. Rajapaksa ruined this country and stole our money. We will not stop until we have a new president and prime minister to Silva said. He said he voted for Rajapaksa in 2019, believing his military background would keep the country safe after Islamic State inspired bomb attacks earlier that year, killed more than 260 people. Nearby, 28 year old satara sedar anaga, and her 49 year old mother, wore black banners around their foreheads that read go to go home, the rallying cry of the demonstrations, which have all but dismantled the Rajapaksa political dynasty that ruled Sri Lanka for most of the past two decades. The two said they hardly slept overnight, chanting alongside hundreds of protesters for hours after the sun came up. We expected him to be behind bars, not escaped to a tropical island. What kind of justice is that? Satara exclaimed. This is the first time people in Sri Lanka have risen like this against the president. We want some accountability. While lawmakers agreed late Monday to elect a new president from their ranks on July 20th, they have not yet decided who will take over as prime minister and fill the cabinet. The new president will serve the remainder of Rajapaksa's term, which ends in 2024 and could potentially appoint a new prime minister, who would then have to be approved by parliament, the prime minister is to serve as president until a replacement is chosen, an arrangement that is sure to further anger protesters who want Vikram asinga out immediately. Sri Lankan presidents are protected from arrest while in power, and it is likely Rajapaksa planned his escape while he still had constitutional immunity. A corruption lawsuit against him and his former role as a defense official was withdrawn when he was elected president in 2019. Corruption and mismanagement have left the island nation laden with debt and unable to pay for imports of basic necessities. The shortages have sewn to spare among the country's 22 million people. Sri lankans are skipping meals and lining up for hours to try to buy scarce fuel, until the latest crisis deepened the Sri Lankan economy had been expanding and growing a comfortable middle class. Satara said the people want new leaders who are young, educated, and capable of running the economy. We don't know who will come next. But we have hope they will do a better job of fixing the problems, she said. Sri Lanka used to be a prosperous country. As a restaurant manager in a hotel in Colombo, she used to have a steady income, but with no tourists coming in the hotel closed, she said. Her mother used to work in Kuwait, but came back to Sri Lanka a few years ago after she suffered a stroke. Now the daily medication she needs has become harder to find and more expensive. The political impasse added fuel to the economic crisis since the absence of an alternative unity government threatens to delay a hoped for bailout from the International Monetary Fund. The government must submit a plan on debt sustainability to the IMF in August before reaching an agreement, and the meantime, the country is relying on aid from neighboring India and from China. Asked whether China was in talks with Sri Lanka about possible loans, a Chinese foreign ministry official gave no indication whether such discussions were happening. China will continue to offer assistance as our capability allows for Sri Lanka's social development and economic recovery, said the spokesman long win Ben. On Tuesday, Sri Lanka's religious leaders urged protesters to leave the government buildings, the protesters have vowed to wait until both Rajapaksa and vicar massinga are out of office. After the storming of the government buildings, it was clear there is a consensus in the country that the government leadership should change, said Xian Pereira, executive director of the national peace council of Sri Lanka, a think tank. The protesters accused the president and his relatives of siphoning money from government coffers for years, and Rajapaksa's administration of hastening the country's collapse by mismanaging the economy. The family has denied the corruption allegations, but Rajapaksa acknowledged some of his policies contributed to the meltdown..

"Joining me. Andrew, I'm tired. I'm tired of the headlines and the hashtag Christian nationalism. I'm tired of being tired of it, right? We don't want to have to deal with this, but I don't we don't have the luxury of being tired of this stuff because they've essentially declared war on the rest of us. You know, they're stacking the school boards, they're going after local state, federal government. They got evangelical activist judges that they're sort of planting. I mean, hundreds and hundreds of them. I mean, would you say that the Christian nationalist are being successful right now? They are. They are. Their goal is to take over and they are working hard towards that goal. They want to redefine the American identity to align with the Christian identity. And then they're going to redefine our law accordingly. And they've made a lot of progress toward that goal. One thing that been desperately fighting against at the freedom from religion foundation. I'm writing books about it writing op eds. We're litigating cases. This is one of the existential threats to the American republic right now. Christian nationalism. And if we don't stand up against it, I really fear we're going to lose our country. I'm also interested in the people who are like, well, it's not us. That's not true, Christianity. It's satara. But they seem many of them seem suspiciously deferential and kind of quiet. You know, they look at the insurrection video. What was it that it was termed earlier? It was like some sort of a legitimate free protest. Legitimate political discourse. Thank you for that. Yeah, I was searching for the term legit. They're smashing windows. There's gunfire. There's a noose that's being hung outside the capitol building. What the hell? Have you noticed this sort of, I don't know. It may not even be an uneasy. It might even be a happy silence from the quote unquote moderates out there. Yeah, I mean, you struggle to find the term because that term makes no sense, right? I mean, there was nothing legitimate or discursive about the political discourse, right? It was a violent insurrection meant to overturn the results of a free and fair election. That is what we saw on January 6th. And there were many disparate identities and ideologies that were visible during that attack, but they were united under the banner of Christian.

"Thank you. Yeah, I wanted to make a couple of comments about Georgia football. First off, regarding Kirby smart and all this noise about if he loses on Friday night. I think it's nonsense to speak about him being in the hot seat or anything like that because I just want to thank Kirby smart for getting towards a relevant again. And I think regardless of what happens on Friday night, that's good thing. And secondly, I'd like to talk about the quarterback controversy. And that's in JT and basically I think it's BS. I think monkey and Kirby are on the field with these guys every day, evaluating these guys every day. And these guys make a decision. We get others kind of challenge their decision and they have no basis for what they're talking about. To something I want to hear your thoughts on Paul. Well, that's always an easy thing to say and coach you still make mistakes. They're judged on performance, not what they see every day. And I don't have a real issue with it. It seems like they're pretty strong reasons why. JT Daniels has not seen the field. So I'll defer to Kirby smart on that. As far as what happens with a loss, I think a lot depends on what we see Friday night. And if we see the Georgia team that we've seen all year, then I think the end result will be less important. But if we see a repeat of what we saw against Alabama, I'm not sure I could make that statement. Pat is up next. Hey, Paul, happy new year. I hope it's a good one. Thank you. Same to you. Thank you. I have been drinking the Kirby smart Georgia Kool-Aid all year, Paul. And I want you to know, I am on the wagon. I have reverted back to the pessimistic venture. Larry Munson, personality complex, and I expect us to lose to Michigan. Really? Yes, I do. And that'll just save the embarrassment of having to play Alabama again. Now, I'm serious. I'm on the wagon, all right? That was a pathetic lost to Alabama. Mark got out, coached. The team got out, played. And now, does it need to be fired? No. But this may, what we're witnessing right now, may explain to you why a lot of Georgia football fans who are my age are happy with ten and two seasons. And end up in the top ten or 15. Right? Well, I think all of these questions are impossible to answer until we see because it's very possible that that was just one bad day that Georgia recovered from, but if it doesn't happen, then I think the narrative will be pretty ugly in the off season. And by the way, nobody interpret that as anything other than a comment. Kirby smart is one of the most secure coaches in America, whether he wins a national championship or loses by 50. We all know where this program is. It's an elite program, but when you become an elite program, at some point, you do need to get over that hump. And that's where he is right now, trying to get over that hump. Alan is up next. Good afternoon. Hey, Alan. Yes, yes. What happened 32 years ago was Barbara's last game and delivery Bill. You are correct. You win the final jeopardy question. What happened, what was 39 years ago tonight? It was the liberty bowl game between Alabama and Illinois in Memphis. That's correct. It's funny. When I was in Birmingham the other day, I was with the Jeremiah Castile and a number of other players Walter Lewis and all of these guys played such a big role in that game. It was a really tough season. Alabama had gotten the number two ranking. They lost to Tennessee and Knoxville, then they lost again to LSU southern miss and auburn and the fear that morning. I remember coach Brian invited a group of sports writers to his suite, and I really got dragged along by my boss. And the idea of the coach Brian would lose four straight games to end his career was just unthinkable. There was enormous pressure on those players that night. And the defense really came up large. Against a good team. Hey, thank you for the call. Appreciate it. Mitch is up next in South Carolina. How am I? Before I ask, I have a question about playoff, but before I do I want to say because I know we'll speak to you again before new year. Half new year to you and to mark and Dan and thank you to Mari. And thank you all for enhanced my past year. Thank you. Two questions about the play out the expansion of the playoffs. Do you think if we were 12 game format right now? And with rules that they put out just a few weeks ago a few days ago, if a couple teams had to forfeit because of COVID, do you think that's all come into play the next time they have discussions? And also, do you think if Alabama this wife satara with Cincinnati? Do you think that's going to happen in enhancement? Yeah, as far as COVID is concerned, I don't I'm not making a social or political statement here, but I don't think there's a team out there that wanted to play in a bowl game that was prevented from playing because of COVID. I think COVID is very interpretive Mitch for this reason. The only players who are being tested are unvaccinated symptomatic. So there's a lot of independent jurisdiction that goes into deciding who is going to get tested or not. And you can take this any way you want. I don't mean you, but the audience I think if you're in the playoffs, you're probably going to find a way to play that game, unlike some of these teams in the bowl games. Do I think COVID is going to be an issue in the future? Not from a not from a competition standpoint now. Okay, but what about let's say 6 and a distinct of the joint? I don't think it's going to matter because there's so much politics at stake here. This isn't 2011 when you really were talking about expanding it from two to four. That's fairly simple. And that's what happened. There are a lot of fiefdoms being protected in the conversation about expansion. We are going to get to expansion. I think it's going to be 12. It's probably not going to be very soon. And the big reason is the contracts. If you go back to 2011, it was a fairly simple thing to do. I had the contract. I think the contract was I don't remember the exact terms, although I think it was three more years. So they just played it out, the BCS and 12 and 13, and then went to the playoff in 14. It was far more complex. Okay. Well, thank you. And once again, I hope you all have a wonderful new year and I look forward to being a part of the time bomb family next year. Mitch, we look forward to it as well. Thank you very much. Cheerleader is up next. Hi, Paul, happy new year, thanks for taking my call. Thank you. Listen, I heard you've talked about the legend bank with that within Birmingham. Was it last week? I didn't hear a thing about it. Were people invited to it or was it invitation only?.

"Just this is my job. I'm not taking it for granted. He always remembered the fans. Kobe Bryant. Yes, his dad played overseas in Europe. His dad used to take them. Two games used to have to sit up. In the nose bleeds at times. Kobe never forgot the fans. He never forgot that people would show up to watch and play and he always gave it his all. So when he had his jersey retired, I could say both of them Number eight and number 24. He reminded everybody. It was about the fans. This was from December of 2017. I don't think you guys understand how present you guys were with me. You know, you guys were there with me at 5 30 in the morning when I was running the track, and I was midway through my work out. I didn't know if I could make it through. And I thought about the expectations you got you guys have for me. You have for our team, and it pushed me through. It. Got me through those 804 101 100 at 5 30 in the morning. So I thank you. And we heard that kind of backed up by His wife, Vanessa, shared that as well. Just how much He really appreciated the fans, and it's. It's a shame that that that next chapter of his life is not going to play out getting invested into the arts being invested into his Children and his family and Helping to really push forward of women in sports and young ladies in sports. This what was next for Kobe Bryant what he did on the basketball court. As amazing as it was. It might really have paled in comparison to what he was getting ready to contribute just to to other people just as an inspiration into the art. So when I think about Kobe Bryant In his legacy. Oh, man. He was He was fun to watch. He was fluid was able to pattern his game off of Michael Jordan and successfully became one of the best basketball players ever. But when I think about Kobe, you know you hear this now. It's the Mamba mentality. You know, just go out there and get it. You hear it from a Yannis Satara camp? Oh, you hear it from the younger players. I have a book here in the studio with me right now, Looking at me in the face Kobe Bryant, the Mamba mentality. Just going after an attacking what you need to giving it your all. That's what I think about. When I think about Kobe Bryant. I want to ask producer Dave here with us. When you think about Kobe Bryant is his legacy of memory. What comes to mind for you, Dave? So Kobe. I appreciated the way he played. And obviously we talked about his work ethic, and he was just that guy who's going to outwork you when nobody else was looking, and he talks about it. 5 30 in the morning. It's all that work you put in. When no one is looking. That makes the game that might seem that much easier. So even though I was never a fan of his team that he played on, I could appreciate him the same way. I can appreciate Michael Jordan and as you said he emulated Jordan almost better than anyone. Has ever done it. So I appreciated that work ethic always But my specific memory of Kobe you actually mentioned that already? I was in the building as well. February 2nd. 2000 and nine Madison Square Garden, and it's the only time in the history of my life that I've cheered for a player on the opposing team. And I have a lifelong diehard Knicks fan, and I was there with the next jersey on me and my dad and it's the only time I ever saw. Kobe played live and I wish I had had an opportunity to watch him play more live. But 61 points like you said, he made it look easy. The Lakers won the game and I didn't even care about it. At that point that they had one. I was actually in those Kobe chance at the end of the game at the end of the fourth quarter. As an opposing fans. So just just an unbelievable memory. I'm glad I was in the building to experience that. How about how about that? We were in the same place at the same time. And you know, damn it. Here we are. What is that? 11 years later, 12 years later day Yeah. Look at that. It's funny how life works and we were. We were in that building at the same time. Here we are. Here we are. Now That was that was a hell of a memory. One thing that that I missed from from Kobe Bryant living in New York City at the time I've seen Kevin Durant. Play up in Harlem, and that's why I look at Kevin Durant and I just go. I have never in my life and I have seen a lot of basketball players I have never in my life. Seen anyone with a basketball as fluid. As as Kevin Durant. I have seen footage of Kobe Bryant up at Harlem at the Rucker. I would have loved to have seen that. But Kobe left us with a lot. You know, I can think about being in bars and kitchens and living rooms and homes and In games where you just I've watched Kobe and but more importantly, I think his idea. On how he attacked his profession and and how he inspired other people. Just how dedicated he was to his job, his career his life. That's what I remember the most about Kobe, and I think that's something that he is left with a lot of people and prime example on on how you can always get better. How there is always room to improve, and that's something that stands out when I think about Kobe Bryant, not just a memory, but his legacy as a whole. Kobe Bryant would have been 43 years old today. August 23rd. What I'm gonna do is open up the phone lines to you. You know the number here It is 855 to 1 to four. CBS That's 855212. For CBS. Is there a Kobe memory that stands out to you when you think about Kobe and his legacy? What stands out hit me up with those Kobe memories. Tell me about his legacy. I'm going to take your calls. When we.

"Weird. In a good way. And not by me, maybe by You know some of the calls because this isn't just my show. This is the J. R sport brief show, but it's Your show as well. Alright, so obviously we will talk about the NBA playoffs. There's some guy named Connor McGregor, who fights tomorrow Does a lot of talking like he's a professional wrestler in the eighties. Do you even care? You know, we've had Danny Green of the Philadelphia 70 Sixers. I don't want to say he wind or cried. About the reaction that professional athletes get from fans. We'll talk about this man. And then Patrick Mahomes. He's out here golfing in Lake Tahoe. And you know, he was asked about being compared to Tom Brady. And I said to myself, I'm like, well, damned Do. We have to compare everybody to everybody. So we'll talk about that as well. You know the deal. You can follow me Online. All social media is at J. R Sport brief. That's Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I just tweeted out the show run down. And the number here. CBS Sports Radio 855 to 1 to four CBS. That's 8552 on two for CBS Super producer Stuart Kovacs. How are you, Man? I'm good. Jr. The rain in New York finally stopped for one. So it's been a nice day. Today. The rain in New York stop that's raining in the south, and it's raining everywhere else. It's like Missy Elliott said. You know, I can't stand rain. It's just How it is right now. But despite that We still got baseball taking place all over the country. Despite that. We're in the middle of the NBA Finals and despite the rain, and you know what this is It's a tie in here. Clever tyrant. Is it raining in the Milwaukee Bucks locker room? Is it raining on the Milwaukee Bucks organization right now? Because they were a dam disaster last night. We spoke about it. I told you about it right here. The game finished while I was on air, Okay? Milwaukee Bucks look like a disaster. You think about that game last night, losing to the Phoenix Suns going down 1 18 to 1 to wait on Tuesday. They went out and they lost game 11 18 1. Oh, five. And there's a couple of points here to make about the Milwaukee box. I'll make several of them Coach Budenholzer. If they didn't make the finals, they were probably going to Cannes is behind. He should be happy that they're in this position. We know that they took on an underhanded Brooklyn Nets squad. James Harden was running around on one leg. Kyrie Irving ended up missing several games because of her spring ankle and Kevin Durant went out and said Okay, I'm just gonna drop You know 47 49 points just because I feel like it. It took them seven games. Seven. So even dispatch them. So here we have the Milwaukee Bucks, led by a two time NBA M v. P and Yossi Yonah Satara. Campo, led by a coach Budenholzer, who's behind was on and might still be on the line. And you got to think about the other guys surrounding Yannis, this roster that has been built around him. Brook Lopez. Big ass Brook Lopez. What do you do, Brooke? I shoot threes. I grab rebounds. And you know, I used to be an All star for the Brooklyn Nets. I'm still a damn good player. Then you got drew holiday. Someone who's been one of the best defensive guards in the NBA since he stepped foot onto a court. Here. You have someone who has been an all star. But here you have someone who has been a disaster. Someone who's been up and down and he he had his moments. Throughout the playoffs. I mean, he he went on a nice stretch to, you know, dispatch of the Nets and one of their games. But overall drew holiday. He doesn't look like somebody who's Just signed an extension. He doesn't look like a former All Star. It doesn't look like a dude who's going to be getting $160 million over the next four years. Drew holiday. Just looks like it's all in between the years right now. It's all in between his head right now. Drew holiday. Last night. In the Los 17 points, seven of 21 shooting You think about the first game Game one on Tuesday night? What a drew holiday Duke He gave you 10 points. 14 of 14 shooting. So far. In two games in the finals. Just two games, Okay? They're not eliminated. They didn't lose. The series isn't over officially yet. He's shooting 31% from the field. 14% From downtown. Let me say that again. It's two games. Okay, but 14% From downtown. You're supposed to be the backup. You're supposed to be the improvement at the point guard position. Okay? You did an excellent job defensively trying to help out Trae Young. You can only contain him to a certain degree. You're supposed to initiate the offense. You're also supposed to knock down a damn shot. Cause Janice can't do it all by himself. And Oh, yeah, Be honest and to the company. By the way, he's the dude. "You just see it now in the playoffs. He can go out one game and dropped 38 points in an even go over seven from three in the next game, and he is an All star via osmosis. He's an All Star because he plays with Yana Satara camp. Oh, he's not an all Star by himself. And so it's tricky. He may give you that 30 spot one game and he might be Casper. The friendly ghost the next game. You don't know. But yeah, between him and holiday, they have to step up. The entire team is built around Yannis and, hey, I'm going to dart to the basket and throw it out to a shooter. Well, if he's not dart into the basket that makes everybody's job so much harder. I also thought it was overshadowed, too, because clearly the filet mignon When you look back at that game was unfortunately John is getting hurt the hyper extension of the need. He was doubtful Now he's out for the game tonight. That effort that they had in the first half of Game four was as lethargic as you get your down 13 points at half, Janice couldn't hit any shots. He's airball and free throws left and right. Middleton cold and True Holiday couldn't What have you thought of a boat in that game? They were all getting cooked in the first half anyway. And that's just when you feel that you're the better team and you didn't necessarily show up. So it's unfortunate that Yanez got hurt to start basically that second half, but they they were a disaster. And so we have to see that that shows you the importance of having a point guard, regardless of whether he's six FT. 10 or 11, or he's a Greek freak whether he comes out of North Carolina. You need a point guard to run your team. You need somebody who can command an offence whether or not they're going to set you up via scoring or whether they're going to go ahead and get everybody else involved. And so that's why Chris Paul deserves so much love. I mean, we saw when he went down, we saw the passing acumen of of Booker. We saw Cameron paint step up, and that's why Paul deserves so much love because he is your prototypical point guard. In a league where the point guard position has already started to change. He deserves all the credit. And in a year where there's been a lot of injuries, we all know that I'm not taking anything away. I don't believe I'll put an asterisk on the trophy just because this person got hurt in that person got hurt. It also depends the severity of these injuries. Devin Booker, Broken nose doesn't force him to miss time. Three places you look at Chris Paul. Covid. No one obviously wants to get covid. And it's been a big topic of this world. But you know he would eventually come back. It's not. Oh, this guy has a hamstring. All this guy has a bone bruise in his foot. Their injuries weren't catastrophic. Whereas a lot of other teams there were and you also talked about the importance of a point guard. You see that in Philadelphia, and we'll talk some Ben Simmons in a bit. Do we am, are we? Well, we will talk about you Got you got you got any concrete with you? For all the brakes. Yeah. You know, it's wild. And so I lived in Philadelphia for seven years. I went to Temple Place of my birth. Yeah, really? You're from Philly was born in Philadelphia. You're a cheesesteak guy. I'm gonna eat anything type of Okay. Alexandra's mom is next time we'll go to Philadelphia will get the royal treatment. You'll have your home coming back to you paid for it. We're good. No worries about that. Okay, Um, but I would go to games at the Wells Fargo Center. Building empty before the game. I would see Benson and shoot over and over and over and over again, you see the silly the inane instagram videos where he's just hyping up themselves in the summer in the gym, playing with a bunch of nobodies. When it comes time to the game. Them. Not having a true point guard really hurts them because he is their point guard and we've seen it. That guy does not shoot. And the most alarming part is he wouldn't even throw down a dunk because he was afraid that he had to get to the charity stripe. Where Chris Paul, it's the opposite. Obviously, Chris Paul isn't is a great player and you know, wherever you want to put them in the all time great list. You see how important it is when you have a point guard, then also a point guard that could finish these games. That's how you win in this league. We look at and be. We look at your kid finishes and B doesn't have a finisher on his team. The Nuggets. We knew they were cooked entering the postseason. Yet they be Portland because they lost their finisher in Jamal, Listen, there's there's a lot when we look at professional sports or anything in athletics. It's all upstairs. We got a lot of people who run around with physical ability. You don't even have to be a professional athlete. You could just be a giant walking down the street. But do you have the mental acumen to actually take advantage of your physical gifts? Are you talking about my high school career now? Because I was walking around like a giant? I don't know if I had the ability mentally to do well on the phone, But you're sitting here with me. You got to have some type of brain, right. Look, I hope so. You know, we have a good actor. I could win an Oscar. Well, that's not necessarily good thing. Don't don't Don't crown that achievement. But look When you talk about professional athletes, they're there for a reason. You think about a player J. R. Smith and basketball one of the most talented Players I have ever seen in my life. But some of his decision making is in the toilet. You have players that have physical ability that can't necessarily go out and get the job done. Here. We have a six ft 10. Point guard one of the best basketball players in the world who still.

Chris Paul Devin Booker J. R. Smith Ben Simmons 38 points Paul John Janice 13 points Philadelphia North Carolina Yana Satara Philly Yannis seven years one game Benson Casper Alexandra Booker
