"Harris Perry in for Dan Xena this week, and we've been reflecting on the global impact of last summer's uprisings following officer Showman's murder of George Floyd here to discuss that, and war is Omar Wessel. He is an assistant professor of politics at Princeton University. Omar. Thanks for joining us You so much for having me So Omar clearly neither racial justice nor state violence, our new or even particularly rare. So why is it that this moment resonated across the globe? I think there's three main reasons that murder of droid flew. George Floyd was so powerful first and foremost is the video, particularly Darnell A. Frazier's footage that just was very visceral, very intimate, very powerful allowed people to see The profound indifference to human suffering. That officer shall been indicated as we as we could watch the life drain from George Floyd's face right so that that footage really was Exceedingly important, And that's an echo of what we've seen in the past, where whether was Amatil or Rodney King that documentation of in particular state violence can be very powerful in mobilizing people Another really Important factor is that the Sheldon himself was just so extreme in his level of indifference right that that it's not that this wasn't a, you know, an ambiguous situation. I mean, it was just very Stark. So much so that we saw other police forces criticized that behavior. I mean, which we almost never see. And then Lastly, I think that the timing in the midst of the pandemic meant that Where you know, One of the court challenges for any social movement is trying to, uh, get get a bunch of people to kind of show up at the same place at the same time, and people always have things going on in their lives, but during the pandemic suddenly People were able to kind of focus on this particular injustice with to a degree that would have been much harder without the pandemic. I so appreciate that because it reminds us that protests don't just pop up. They don't just emerge. They are actually organized by activists who bring people together in those spaces. Um, but they're also right. In addition to the work of activists and organizer's, There's also those what you have written about as seeds those seeds of an agenda. So actually, just this week you publish it. Academic paper in the A. P s are titled Agenda Seeding and Thinking about 1916 19 sixties black protest movements. I'm wondering about the ways of black American movement for freedom. Have seeded agendas abroad before is this something that we've seen happen? Yeah, that's that's It's a great question. And I think you know part of what is for me deeply fascinating about how social movements work is the way that they learn from each other. So, for example, just to go back to the 19 forties. Buyer Dressed in a key influence on Martin Luther King's commitment to Nonviolence, Rustin goes to India toe learn from disciples of Gandhi about their non cooperation movement, and we've seen similar echoes of the current black Lives matter. Movement on a zoo. The introduction sort of really helpfully outlined on movements around the world and and in particular, I think It's the emphasis on police violence on unjust state violence that has helped to focus Um and you know when those incidents arise in a place like Columbia and in recent weeks that people have described it as their own George Floyd moment, right, And so, so in that way, there's a kind of a template and um, and a sense of legitimate outrage. At state violence that helps to mobilize people building on what they've seen in black lives matter in the U. S. So I I appreciate that you started with with rust in because that shows us sort of the black Atlantic. The current's moving the other way, But it does often feel as though um as it moves on, Lee sort of from U. S centric out. So I'm thinking of us learning just yesterday that Sasha Johnson, a black lives matter. Activists in the UK Is in critical condition after being shot. And we don't know from initial reports whether this shooting was directly related to her activism, But still, I wonder about, for example, the capacity of a Sasha Johnson to be a figure like George Floyd also reigniting movements here in the U. S. We definitely see this kind of cross pollination happening in many different contexts. So I mean, even for example, you know there was the career square protests in Egypt and that helped influence the occupy Wall Street protests in the United States. And some of that is about Tactics. You know, this is there's a particular method of protest, like occupying a space. But in other cases like what you're describing their ways in which a, um iconic figure can become a kind of rallying point for a movement and and and and we also see just to kind of speak to the international dimensions. There are ways in which sometimes they're activists moving from one place to another kind of learning from each other. So the scholars enough to fetch it, for example, has talked about how People in Turkey who organized the protest in in Istanbul also helped share some of the methods they learned with folks in career square. So there there is, um you know, the in particular in the age of the Internet, their ways in which people are communicating sharing tactics trying to figure out how can they get their voice heard, And in the particular case, you're saying it's it's obviously still too early to say whether the U. K might influence the U. S. And this specific case. But it certainly happened historically. So you you dropped social media there. So I just want to think about the ways, though, that that has sometimes looked a little different relative to global actors. So you know we're being sort of celebratory of this idea of ideas than and activism moving back and forth. But in the 2016 elections here in the U. S. Foreign entities actually exploited black lives matter, language and images to work against right interests of racial justice. How can how can we sort of navigate that question of these illegitimate uses globally? One of the court challenges for any social movement is too kind of capture the moral high ground and hold it. And there will always be a counter mobilization that tries to deal legitimize the claims for equality or or justice of that movement. When I find the 19 sixties, there are tactics and it requires often you know, kind of extreme. Kinds of methods but making one self the object of state violence strategically doing that and getting media coverage of those kinds of attacks. That, of course, can lead to trauma, injury and death. But but but but helped elevate an issue and do it in a way that is, you know, sort of helps to just illuminate the injustice in a very profound way that that kind of tactic Can work, but it's very hard to sustain. Omar Wasow is an assistant professor of politics at Princeton University. He's also a little bit the whole reason that I know about the black planet and those questions of global organizing. Omar. Thank you for your work for so long and.

"Of this special anti robbery squad due to its widespread abuses including torture and killings the culture and the politics of black americans has long been agenda-setting for social movements around the world and the global impact of george floyd murder and the movement ignited is no exception here to discuss that. I am hearing a radio station in my ear And it's my radio station in atlanta and someone has clearly pushed a button somewhere and suddenly. Now i am listening to wb radio in atlanta in my year. Now they had to say that. So jim would know 'cause i've been talking the whole time that this has been going on. Someone clearly is pushing a button somewhere. Tappin twice today Is very. I have no idea why people keep pushing buttons to suddenly sin programming into my ear. But they do. I'm sorry the only way for me to do anything about was to talk down the line to jim courier that someone had yet again pushed that button now to get back to my point. I was fine. I honestly i was fine until i heard a commercial and it was my voice. Y'all i can't listen to myself on the radio just going to while engineer the point is gone. I'll i'll focus on this. "The government is grown way too much in El Salvador, 52 homicides per 100,000 people and the Democrats tell us that that's what people are fleeing. And then they come to ST Louis, where the homicide rate is 87 per 100,000. People again in the United States is five per 100,000, El Salvador. It's 52 per 100,000. You could see that wonderfully that And then in ST Louis. It's 87 per 100,000. Because the Democrats are making things better. They're they're making things better, and the Democrat Party is anti Israel and anti Semitic. It's interesting. They're anti capitalist, Anti American, and they're not on our side, just just and I've got all kinds of I actually pulled the story on human sacrifices over the weekend. I'm not sure if I'm going to get to in olden times, you know, 500 years ago, when when Spanish and Portuguese explorers were landing and what you know, now Mexico and South America running into the the Aztecs and You know the Inca and the human sacrifices and crazy stuff, you know, cutting heads off, cutting their chest up and pulling out their hearts, whether it's still beating to sacrifice them to the sun God It was largely a sun God thing, and it was about the weather is about the climate. They were trying to prevent climate change. The has tech and the Inca were with their human sacrifices and a lot of Children and not entirely Children. But also they would sacrifice their slaves. You see when they got the would enslave people from other tribes that they had conquered, and then they would have human sacrifices and do all kinds of crazy creative things you know, living snakes and things like that. Creative and and I was reading about it over the weekend and think you know, the more things change, the more they stay the same, but it was 500 years ago, I was thinking that's really not all that long ago. If you put it in context, I think we we were talking about two weeks ago that the oldest person in America remember this. This there was a woman that passed away she is. I think she was 114 years old. And the United States. And if you think about you lay her lifetime and to end her life time plus four lifetimes of her life, and you're back to the human sacrifices and throwing babies in volcanoes. To appease the sun. God Not really. That long ago I was talking about this. You know, if you're 83 84 years old, you've lived for about one third. The history of the United States. If you're what is it, 64? Maybe even 62. You've lived for one quarter of the history of the United States and and this woman that died a couple of weeks ago. 1/5 of the period of human history is not that long. It really isn't recorded history anyway, and, um, and the human sacrifice is that these people because the Aztec one of the emperor's Um, which they passed along through bloodline. And they said that they were chosen by God, just like the European emperors and kings, by the way on bay sacrificed, apparently at one time 80,000 as text to impress the gods. In order to in one fell swoop as my mother used to say, a fell swoop and 80,000 of them, and they did all these crazy things tearing heart satin. While there's still beating and holding him up to the gods, and the crowds would cheer. It's like it's like a bad Hollywood movie with Tom Hanks or something. Crazy, crazy stuff. But I digress. We've got Monica Lewinsky and the news. We've got Charles Barkley in the news. Disney coming up there $100 sandwich at Disneyland. They got the Disneyland, the $100 sandwich, but fear not. It feeds more than one thea all the anti Semitism of the left wingers and the Palestinians. In New York City of Los Angeles. Got an update on that on the fastest girl in Connecticut wrote a piece. Amazingly, you know the one who then lost out to transgender athletes who crushed her soundly and left her in the dust and changed the trajectory of her life. And she will die bitter because you know, liberals decided that what is fair is not fair. And what is not fair is fair, Interesting stuff. And what are Little and a constant updates, of course on the deadly January 6th insurrection. That's the headline in Mother Jones Front Page of The Washington Post today, January six Story no stories about the three day siege of the White House, the torching of the church, the more than 100 police officers injured. The first family evacuated nothing about that in the paper today or for months and months and months. Never comes up pretty amazing stuff. We've got ahold category dedicated to racism and all that. And and also Brian was calling in from Florida but he disappeared on us was he wanted to talk about black lives matter. Activists Sasha Johnson shot comma in critical condition in London in London, England. See, Because this is we're spreading the epic the ethos around the world. This is what the left does the racist left And you know, black lives matter. So that means 12 shouted a party of New Jersey and 48 shot in Chicago over the weekend and 11 killed and Philadelphia shattering all records. ST Louis shattering all records. What do you think is getting shot here? And what do you What do you think the disproportionate impact is here? CNN will not be talking about this. I promise you and activist who has played a leading role in anti racism demonstrations in Britain. Is in critical condition after being shot in the head in London shot both in the head and in London. Her political party says she has a political party. I bet they're a lot of fun, probably don't want to go to their parties. The taking The initiative party. That's the name of the party that taking the initiative party. They have a lot of parties there. We have fewer parties here. Our system is far superior to their their quaint but antiquated. What is that kind of a just slightly post colonial era? This parliamentary system is for the birds. Our system is far superior. Notwithstanding the condition of the Democrat Party today. The taking the initiative party says Sasha Johnson was shot in the head on Sunday. It said Johnson, who played a leading role in black lives matter, protests last year has received numerous death threats. Yeah, that's not what happened. It wasn't it was that you know. Is that a thing with her friends Recently found the recently founded taking the Initiative party, said Johnson, a member of its executive Leadership committee. There is have these Soviet titles was at quote, a strong, powerful voice for our people in our community and quote Metropolitan police said The 27 year old woman was in the hospital in critical condition. Of the city just before three A.m. on Sunday late night Saturday party place said the shooting took place near a house where a party was taking place, saying, that's you know, so we got that going for us and then that's pretty You know, it's obviously a horrible, awful story, and I'm sorry that we're exporting this this brand of insanity. I'd like to apologize to great Britain, which may not be great, but it's fine. We should call it fine. Britain, you know? Okay. Britain. "And you follow stint on Twitter at Todd Schmidt and on Instagram at Certified Touch, Schnick coming up this hour. We're going to talk to you about the latest from Nashville. Apparently, the police have warning about what was going on. We're going to talk to you about the parents of a little boy who was bullied. They're gonna get to sue the school district because, and this is my opinion that schools don't care about bullying. They would really like it. If the bully the bullying victim would just suffer silently and not say anything, because it creates problems for them, eh? So we're going to talk to you about that. There's a controversy a Bruin. Because of the new Disney Pixar movies, Soul. In which Tina Fey depicts a character that is not human. On. People don't like that. I'm having a hard time wrapping my right right and also one of the leaders of the Black lives matter. Movement is calling for the creation of a race offenders. Registry, just like a sex offenders Registry and, yes, you would not be able to live near communities of color if you were put on the race offender registry. It's really kind of dumb, Just just throwing that out there. But before we get into all of that, I feel the need to mention again. For those of you Just tuning in dawn wells, you know her better as Marianne. The lovable girl next door. You were either a ginger or a Marianne kind of guy. When you were growing up. I was a Marianne kind of guy. She has passed away today in Los Angeles from complications due to covet 19. This is, according to her publicist. She was 82 years old. Born in Reno, Nevada, She represented her home state in the Miss America pageant in 1959 that opened the door for her to start a career in Hollywood, where she appeared in a multitude of television shows, including 77, Sunset Strip. I don't know Never saw it, Maverick. I've heard of that one bonanza I've heard of that. The Joey Bishop show Okay, and something called Hawaiian eye. She beat out 350 other actresses to nab the role of girl next door. Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island, which aired on CBS from 1964 to 1967 and later in syndication. Did you know there's a famous story about that? That show The way it was canceled. Had had been renewed. It was gonna be back on and then Bill Paley, the guy who was in charge of CBS. His wife was talking to him, and they had canceled gun smoke, But his wife liked gun smoke, so they wanted to bring gun smoke back. And because Bill Paley's wife wanted to watch Gunsmoke probably cause she had the hearts for James Harden is the star of that show. Gilligan's Island got the boot because they needed the space for a gun smoke, So that's why that got canceled. In a 2016 interview with Forbes. Wells revealed that the job was not as lucrative as many people believe, she says it's a Mexican misconception is that we must be wealthy, rolling in the dough because we got residuals. We don't really get a dime. I think my salary of course I was low on the totem pole. Ginger and Thurston Jim Backus. Got more. But her salary was $750 a week sure, which Schwartz, the producer. Reportedly, they made $90 million on reruns alone. That's what they don't tell you about. All those old shows that rear end over and over and over again. Nobody knew what residuals were at the time, so nobody negotiated him into the contracts. Now, that's like the first thing they do. I think Larry David, who co created Seinfeld got a check for $137 million. From his for the rear end. So anyway, Don Wells has passed away beyond acting. She sort of does a producer, author, journalist, motivational speaker, teacher, humanitarians folks person and chairman of the Terry Lee Wells Foundation, an organization for women and Children in northern Nevada as running wells running her film Actors boot camp. For seven years in Idaho, and there you go. She's she's no longer with US and Cove. It has taken someone from Gilligan's Island or anybody left from Gilligan's Island. Tina Louise a still life So ginger ginger outlives them all. Shouldn t Louise started became the screech. Of Gilligan's Island, like she would say stuff, and nobody liked her. For a little while, So they all got along when they got together, but any time it came up she wanted she wanted like a career. But like they all did, But she wanted a career. Beyond that, she I think she kind of resented that they have really still only thought of her from Gilligan's Island, and she's like I said she started became the screech of the group. But Said stuff and alienated. I don't think she ever made a porn on them. You was in Dallas like low grade foreign exposed anyway. Right now a activist who calls herself the Black Panther of Oxford wants to create a race offenders registry that would bar alleged Racists. Alleged racist, mind you from getting work or living near communities of colors. Sasha Johnson is her name. She divulged the agenda for the taking The Initiative Party, a political group in the United Kingdom that's been inspired by black lives matter. And, yes, Black lives matter has has this idea first, and they're looking at it, too. In this country, the registry of Racists. Is similar to the sex offender registry, Johnson said. She said if you were to be racially abusive to somebody the register with question whether someone is fit enough to hold a particular job where their bias could influence another person's life. She serves as an executive committee member of T T I. P Which is the taking the initiative party on overseas activism, she added. A lot of racism happens at work in places of education in a micro aggressive way. If you exhibit an element of bias at work, you should probably receive a warning. First like that. You should probably receive a warning first before later being added to the register, so people know in the future. That you hold these views. I would like to hear criteria if they're going to do this, I'm here to tell you this is probably going to happen The if they're floating these ideas around, it's not going to be like an actual registry. But it's going to be something that the black lives matter has and anybody who does anything. You like it if you refer to the George Floyd for a riot, says riots instead of peaceful protests. When a good chunk of the more riots you could get put on the list, And then, according to them, you wouldn't be able to live near a community of color in any way, shape or form. Oh, good Separatists knife. Now. The national Registry would also bar alleged offenders from living their ethnic minority groups and include anyone Accused or charged with a race crime. You see how that's a problem, right? You see how They could then just make some wild accusation and put you on this list. And if anybody takes this ridiculous list seriously Suddenly your life is pretty much ruined. All they're looking for us. That's why you can't pay too close attention while you kind of pay close attention to him, But you can't get too much credibility. The black lives matters because every so often they do something good. But then, every so often they do something ridiculous. And this is something ridiculous. So you're gonna put somebody's name on a list with just an accusation about something and what they're saying? By the way that when they say if your name goes on the list if you're accused of something Is that if you don't do Exactly.

Okay, But wait a minute. Now. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. We gotta be a little careful when you start with the day and you know you people. "And that's the question I get most often and I first Started to contemplate my gender when I was six years old, So that is true, But I tell people this all the time. Didn't understand anything about anything having to do with gender, identity or sexuality or social interactions, Basically until I was in college. And so, like I said, I'm 27 now and I've been transitioning for two years. So it wasn't until I got out of college. But I was able to really make that decision and say, OK, I'm going to make permanent changes to my body and pursue this. Do you think 10 years old is too young to know that you have no gender that your non binary Absolutely. It's it's totally too young. And like I said, I thought about this for almost my entire life. And every time I would think about it, I would learn something new. And then that would kind of would have to think about that new thing and the real The real crux of my decision was and it's really personal. When I hear you know you, lady you talked about your Children. That was the issue for me is I realized I wanted to have Children on. I wanted to protect my ability to do that, and I was learning like if you do this to young, you totally destroy your ability to have your own Children. It's right. It's irreversible damage, and I also wonder about the hormones when you take them so young. What could that due to the development? Could it cause cancer? I just It's It's such a scary process. I feel like kids are being overexposed. It's true and the cancer thing that is like part of the risk factors because any time you're adding, you know, pharmaceuticals to your body, there's there's always the side effects. I think What I've been told is there's ah high level of a specific type of cancer. There's like a higher risk factor for it. But but Truly speaking as far as the cancer goes that very rare, But there is permanent damage with reproductive health. And if you go to young if you take hormone, you know testosterone blockers way too young. You put yourself in a position where not only can you never have your own Children, but you can't actually have the bottom surgery that so many people want So jade you You preserved your fertility, so if you choose to down the line, you'll be able to have a child biological one. Correct. That's really, really important to me Like I really wanted Tol have my own Children and That was kind of like once I understood that about myself because I didn't know that. And this is this is the one final point. I wanted to bring up people say like, Oh, I knew when I was 10 years old. I started thinking about it when I was 10 years old. I knew when I was in college and what helps me No, that is when I was 24 years old. I was still you could look at my Facebook and Twitter. I was still telling people I never want to have Children. And now, three years later or really, just two years later, or a year later, that was like my sole goal in life. Wow. Wow. Thank you so much. J for calling in. Look at that. Where did you ever think in the birdie and said, show you'd be educated like this We have. I learned so much just from Jade, and she is going through transitioning herself, And she says that 10 is just way too young. It's over exposure and she didn't know I hope I'm using the right pronoun. I think she didn't know until 2025 that she wanted to transition and so you've done it a gun. Done it again. Look at the phone bank there. Every phone line is completely lit up either on this issue or the issue of use of the n word. Or or gender is like a million different topic we do. We do have to go to break and we only have what 18 what? 18 minutes left to the show. You know that. What I want 24 minutes of, you know that race offender registry. I gotta tell you, she turning this Sasha Johnson and she's very prominent..
