"Oh you know. Usually the one that the usually the award for best director usually that movie mike will go on and be the best movie or like the best actor will go on and be the best movie on but they did best picture before actress actor so weird so weird. It's like adding the super bowl on a coin. Flip right right. So they announced nomad land. Winner of the best picture was like. Oh okay. And then the very next award was best actress at like. You read through actress in a leading role. You re through the the nominees yet. Carrie mulligan for promising. Young woman. Vanessa kirby for not unfortunately not for fast and furious presents hobson shah out jennifer instead for pieces of a woman. You've got andrade. For the united states versus billie holiday. It was her first movie ever. She got nominated for nonsense and of course. The davis moraine is black. Bottom and then francis mcdormand for no midland so obviously francis mcdormand's gonna win because her movie won best picture. Yeah you ought assume totally took out she did. She did win totally took all the tension for that moment because we already knew. Nomad land won best picture and then the final award for the night was actor in a supporting role. And the only thing you can kind of think that the producers thought was going to happen maybe chadwick boseman bosman god. Wow was the final in best supporting actor or best actor so accurate a leading role. Okay i just say because like daniel khalil. one supporting actor and daniel badly deserve that oscar. I've never thought judas on the black beside but daniel columbia is so good just read. The nominees were actor in supporting role. Yet leah. Sasha baron cohen not for The trial of the chicago said it's so unbelievable to me that we can live in a world where sasha baron cohen is oscar nominee. "A miracle that just happens. And you're part of this miracle. Maybe you've been pulling some strings somewhere. I don't know. But this one is for you. Thank you very much. Yeah, I've never been has moved. What? You're gonna ask a ceremony as when he said that stuff because I knew that that had happened And I didn't know whether he was going to reference it when and if he won, and he did, And he did. And it was just so I mean, I've got a goose bumps now. It's just so moving so sad. Yes, but some great stuff here, too, and movies that you've previewed for us Sound of metal. What course one for various things as well. So yeah, yeah. Sound of metal went for sound design, which is absolutely deserved to win because you know it's good, but it is, isn't it? And it's so it's replicating the sounds off a person who is losing their hearing rapidly What they're hearing in the sound design. And that was that was very clever. I mean, there's some really interesting moments that arose organically from the way that they were staging it that I thought were really lovely because there were people in London as well. And there were people in all over Europe. There were quite a lot of Europeans who won. So we saw her acceptance speeches from Paris, among other places. Kept cutting to Sasha, Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher because Sasha Baron Cohen was nominated for three different things. I think so they kept cutting to them, and they were clearly standing on the Harris off the restaurant off the war theater at the Sydney Theater Company. They were clearly standing there from now on, so I was a bit of function in town, doing a live thing, and I kept thinking like they just down the road, and the poor fellow keeps losing. We should invite him over here and join us. All right. Ask has been and gone for the year. Couple things to look at the scope of this week. Tina A. T. A documentary on Foxtel. Yeah. This is a documentary about Tina Turner s O. Tina Turner. I reckon is one of those artists who could be celebrated on couldn't dish in Italy. You know she there's nothing problematic about Tina Turner. She doesn't have the drink problem. She doesn't have the drug problem. She hasn't Created enemies or burn bridges. She is universally beloved as just someone who is a survivor, a great artist, etcetera. And when I say Survivor, I mean survivor 16 years with an abusive partner being like Turner So she told that story in her book I, Tina in 1986 kind of because she didn't want to keep telling it. She was always asked about it. So she thought I put it in a book and then hopefully I won't have to tell it again. And there was a film about it called What's Love Got to do with it about her and like in 1993, but I think it's just still been around and still been around. So these people approached her and said, What about a final documentary about you? And I say final because she's 80. And you know, one more time. Tell your story. So that's what this is. So she's on camera in her beautiful house in Zurich, where she lives, and she's telling her story, And it's just a wonderful story. So they get out of aikau out of the way in the first half, and the second half is about really win her own career. Takes off, which is which happens when she's in her late forties that she becomes a number one recording artist and a big career is in a middle age. That's exactly Raj describes here in an interview the early struggles in her life and how they didn't stop her climbing to the top. This this interview, want, Take fun. My mother. Just sit in the window of the kitchen when she was making dinner of Sundays. Used to just watch her. I thought she was so pretty.

The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner
Ben Silverman - Ececutive Producer of The Office
"How did you discover the uk version of the office. I was at my friend. Henrietta conrad's house. I was not an agent. I had left being an agent where i had found everything from who wants to be a millionaire to cracker queer as folk and had translated them into america as the packaging agent and i laughed. Backed by barry diller to start my own company called rally and i had just begun reveling in win over to london for a work trip and was staying at my friend. Henrietta conrad's house and we were watching television. And i was literally flipping the channels and i came on to the office. This is episode one or two okay of the uk season one office. Wow and i was watching it. I wondering if it was for comedy or for real than quickly recognized what it was doing single camera no laugh track faux documentary with people who felt real and i kept watching and started laughing. And it's really hard to make me laugh. And i was falling in love with the show in that moment and then i started thinking about it the next day in the morning and i asked henrietta if she knew ricky gervais as and she said no but her friend dan. Mazer did and we organized and had dinner with dan that night. Which are twenty four hours after you after you see it for the first time on television. You're having dinner with someone who could get you to ricky. Yes and additionally. I also wanted to be with dan. Dan was sasha baron. Cohen's partner allergy was on television. Was allie ardor your then no in the uk okay. But i'm with dan mazer yep. Dan is lovely brilliant in his own. Right and i start peppering questions about the office. And he gives me ricky cell phone number and so the next day. I call ricky around eleven o'clock in the morning and introduce myself on the phone and say i'd love to meet you. Are you in town. He goes actually. Yes me in soho at the starbucks this afternoon and i coordinate a meeting and i spent an hour with ricky talking about the office and very quickly we got along because we both love television and he truly was making me laugh even in those moment right over over the coffee at starbucks and so he clearly had chosen the location of the starbucks because he then says to me oh good news. My agent is right around the corner. Let's go meet with them so it was almost like he met me confirmed. I was okay roy. Conversation was interesting and then we walked over and met with dunkin' as his agent. And then duncan and i began a three month process to secure the rights. And it wasn't until dunkin. Help me unlock it. All that i realized. Both the bbc and ricky controlled the rights. I needed ricky and stephen merchant to actually get it done and agitate to get it done otherwise. It was never going to get done. Got it so you you deal with the bbc. And you deal with ricky steven. You have this partnership in place and where do you go into the united states. I immediately start making phone calls and saying. Are you aware of the show the office. Do you know what it is. Do you think it would interest you. And this is probably now a month after are so run. The show has started to gain buzz. It's aired its cycle in the uk. Its initial six episodes and so it has an awareness. Now it's a thing right not a big thing but to anyone in england it in the television industry. You're aware so. I'm i'm back at the states reaching out to people one of the incredible things about hollywood which was a huge advantage for me to do. Well was that people in hollywood are pretty insular and don't like to travel. They think you need a passport to get from burbank to beverly hills. That is travel and so many people at this time in american television had no clue connection about anything beyond la. Right and only one exac at the time knew what i was talking about was a guy named nick grad. Who worked at fx and he knew what the show was and he loved the show. Kevin riley was running fx. At the time. I'd gone to less mooned us he passed. I went to gail berman. She passed immediately. Didn't get it. Hbo said we'll never do a remake. They clearly have altered that thinking that that time they were like. We won't do a format and showtime wasn't doing shows like this right. I didn't go to abc. 'cause i just knew it wasn't abc. Right and i was starting to tease. Nbc with it and kevin than got named the head of nbc. And i bring it up to him. And i say would you wanna do it here and kevin says absolutely little. Did he know he was actually my only buyer that time. He was the only one right who wanted everyone else. All of television everyone else had passed. Now are you in kevin's like let's do it. Like let's let's make it. You know i'll give you a pilot movement and then kevin's boss though. Who is very involved in his life. Jeff zucker didn't really like it that much because it was his single camera. Nola back injury. I got it like it was a hard pill for them to swallow. I was also like they didn't want the game show back in prime time when i brought millionaire. Everyone thought that was cheesy. Daytime like no no. This will change. Tv know you gotta look at it from how to push the genre and pushed the envelope. So that you can expand versus always play for defense right and i was like this is another level and this is potentially transformative of television and with that can come great great

Pop Culture Happy Hour
Best Moments of the Golden Globes 2021
"Think of the globes as an entertainment event that are really big. Audience still watches in part because a lot of people see it as the kickoff for oscar season. Let me just say if you're queasy about these awards being granted any weight at all you will get. I think no argument from us. That is certainly not our position so to the degree that they mean much. There certainly were some good property. Some good movies and television that were honored Start with nomad land. Which one sort of the top top movie prize. Best motion picture drama and also best director for chloe jau. We just covered this Recently on pop culture happy hour so we don't necessarily need to rehash that whole thing but we were big fans. I loved seeing khloe jowl win. Yeah yeah The top prize for a motion picture. Musical or comedy went to borat subsequent film a movie that i like to say not for linda's but i know people who who love it really love it also winning for that was sasha baron cohen who won best actor for a musical or comedy. The best actor in a drama this one delivered one of the best moments of the night for sure that award went to chadwick boseman for my rainey's black bottom boy that was that was quite a moment accepting the award on his behalf was his wife. Taylor simone lead word and look the globes are trashy and meaningless and then something real happens out of nowhere and that was a really effective speech and a really effective moment in an evening. That felt shambolic in chaotic. Otherwise something beautiful something inspiring something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you can tell you to keep going calls you back to what you were meant to be doing. At this moment in history he would think it kind of felt similar to the moment of that whole series of heath. Ledger getting his posthumous awards for his role in dark knight and it felt really earned and it didn't phillips just because he had passed away like this was the role of a lifetime for him and i'm really glad to see him being honored in that way. Yeah it was a very very moving speech. If you didn't see it. I encourage you to seek it out. It's all over the place that award. I think was wonderful to see not too surprising. One that i think was surprising was Andrew day for the united states versus billie holiday aisha. You saw this to the surprising not too much. I think that there was a lot of buzz for her. And i think that it was more likely she was going to win award for this. Then she might be to win for an oscar if she were to get an oscar nomination but she does a really great job of sounding like billie holiday without sounding too much like her like. It's feeling like mimicry. And she is by far the best thing about the movie and we'll actually be covering it in our tomorrow so everyone can check it out fantastic. I'm extremely excited. I haven't seen it yet. In addition to that the first award of the night actually in of of presentation was daniel. Columbia for judas. The black messiah. They had a little glitch with his audio. You know they were figuring it out. We've all had that glenn said the motto of the pandemic was going to remind your muted. It was a little bit of a mom. You're muted kinda moment. But i was not surprised that he that he won that he's wonderful in that movie. I think you didn't pay on. Is this on. Is this on a cool cool. He really is. And it's a solid win. I mean like he started speaking and you heard millions of voices crying out. You're on mute. Dan mute and i think that moment should make the montage in years to come if there is still a golden globe sincere to come because who knows but like that will be the most emblematic acceptance speech of two thousand twenty one easily that will crystallize this moment in time.

Dean Richards' Sunday Morning
Golden Globes 2021: Complete list of nominees
"Let's start off with the major categories. First of all, for best picture. For the Golden Globes. They break it down. Best picture drama and best picture, music or comedy. So let's start off with best picture drama in which the nominees are Nomad Land. This is the amazing movie with Frances McDormand. Who, you know, play. Somebody who's her life is sort of falling apart and she gets in a van and hits the road and lives in RV camps and recreational areas taking on you know little seasonal jobs along the way. It zest a very sweet and very thoughtful, touching movie. I think this is going to be the big winner for tonight. You know People love Frances McDormand. I think that this is gonna have a lot of Lot of success at the Golden Globes tonight. It will be up against the trial of the Chicago Seven, which, if Nomad land doesn't win trial of the Chicago Seven is going to win. This is the Aaron Sorkin. The written and directed production about the famous Chicago seven trial that took place in Chicago 50 years ago. The Carrie Mulligan movie promising young woman Is a revenge thriller, also an outstanding films nominated for tonight and also the Anthony Hopkins movie called The Father. Those air. Your nominees were best Drama for performances in the dramatic category. For actresses. The nominees are Violet Davis on Drew a day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carrie Mulligan. For best actors in the drama. The nominees are Riz Um, Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins. I think the winners are going to be Frances McDormand and I just I don't know how Chadwick Boseman Doesn't win. He's amazing in the movie Ma Rainey's black bottom. But you know the fact that he passed away the young age and nobody knew that he was fighting cancer. I think that probably is going toe play into the Planted the decision making also for best movie, musical or comedy. The nominees are Boer at subsequent movie film Hamilton. When they put together a television version of Hamilton in the put it on Disney. Plus, this got nominated. The motion picture called Music was nominated, as was the comedy with Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs. And the Ryan Murphy directed production. The prom. Which has Meryl Streep and has just AH, whole variety of very talented actors. That's also nominated for best picture as well. I kind of have a feeling that Borat is going to want to ping the winner tonight in the musical or comedy category. For best actress in a motion picture Maria Buckler Cova, who is placed Borat's daughter in Borat. Subsequent movie film Kate Hudson from music. And, uh, Anya Taylor, Joy dominated for the movie called Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen is nominated James Corden from the prom Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton Dev Patel for the personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Sandberg. For Palm Springs again. I think it's going to be a kind of in a reverend pick, but I think Sasha Baron Cohen could wind up being the winner. Now. The Golden Globes also give out

I didn't notice this yesterday, but There were some snubs. Always snubs. There were some snap it up, Dubs Love is dead to me was shut out. Completely. I wasn't surprised by that. I get So I wasn't surprised because I remember. I feel like you guys weren't loving it. I feel like I liked the second season more. Then most people did. But eh, so I'm not. I'm not surprised because I didn't feel like it had the same critical acclaim that season. One did when it felt very unexpected, But I guess I would be surprised just because you think of the total Number of releases this year, which didn't seem like a ton. I don't know. I just feel like this Christina Applegate, especially and Linda Cardellini. They're just So good. There's like so much great. So many great performances out there. I get it if they were nominated in the first season, it's like, OK, we already did you let's move on to the next person Ma Rainey's black bottom, which I just watched last weekend. Did not get a best picture nomination. But Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis did get acting nods. I think that's accurate. Sure it was You know, I know it was. I believe it was a play, right? Yes, And it felt like you were watching a play. It felt very Like what? That's a weird thing to happen. But if you're watching a play, you kind of have a different suspension of disbelief. Sure, oftentimes than you do in the, you know a movie. So, but Violet Davis outstanding. Chadwick Boseman. They did a dedication to him. Also at the end of that movie, by the way,

"News and Golden Globe nominations announced this morning. I d just came out a few minutes ago. Busy morning around here with we're sorting. All of this out. Let's see we can We just go down some of the lister and see if we can figure out some of the trends. You know. The Golden Globes are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Thies Air Awards for television and movies. These have the awards, most famously where everyone gets together for the award ceremony gets drunk at the ceremony. Probably is not going to happen that way this year because of the pandemic because the award show itself will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. But they won't be on the same stage. They want to be in the same states. Amy Poehler is going to be at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, and Tina Fey is going to be in New York at the famous Rainbow Room, so they're separating it that way. Probably much of the ceremony. Is going to be done with the winners at home, you know, recorded segments s. Oh, it's gonna be an interesting year, but here's how the nominations came down. For best motion picture drama. The nominees are the trial of the Chicago Seven and people are saying based on the performance of Bob Surat. My voice was mixed in there in the category of voice mixed in there someplace. Yeah, play the nominees are Bob Surat. In trial. No trial of the Chicago seven expected to be one of the big movies not only for the Globes but also for the Academy Awards. This movie promising young woman with Carrie Mulligan that I've been telling you about also nominated for best drama. Nomad land with Frances McDormand. Make the powerful true story. Eyes nominated and the father for best performance by an actress in a drama Violet Davis has been nominated for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Andra Day from the United States vs Billie Holiday. Vanessa Kirby, from pieces of a woman, Frances McDormand from Nomad Land and Carrie Mulligan for promising young woman for best performance by an actor in a drama Abby. Abby over here. W GM. Let's get a comment. That's my perform award winning award with the conspiracy award winning The motion picture actor nominees Riz A med for sound of metal Chadwick Boseman. It would be a posthumous award for him for my Rainey's black bottom. Anthony Hopkins and the father, Gary Oldman, in mink and toe here, Rahim and the moratorium for best motion picture, musical or comedy. The nominees are boring at subsequent to movie film. It's got quite a few nominations. Hamilton was nominated. Also music The Andy Samberg movie Palm Springs and also The Netflix movie the prom for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy. The nominees are Maria Baka Baka Lova from Borat, the subsequent movie film she played Borat's daughter in the movie. Kate Hudson in music. Michelle Pfeiffer and French exit Rosamund Pike and I, Carol Ott and Anya Taylor. Joy for Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen for Borat. Subsequent movie film James Corden in the Pram Lin Manuel Miranda for Hamilton Dev Patel. The personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Samberg for Palm Springs. I know they say, And as you mentioned that this congee forerunner of Academy Awards, but they're not going to give an Oscar to bore act, are they? Well, you know, the thing is with the Golden Globes is that they separate Musical and comedy from dramas. So when it all comes down to it, I would be very surprised if a Borat wound up being well. It might be nominated for best picture, but Because there could be up to nine nominees for best picture. But for the Oscars in terms of the acting awards, there will only be five nominations. And I would be very surprised if Sasha Baron Cohen, it would be shocking if if he got that, along with people like Chadwick, Boseman and Riz Ahmed. And, uh, Gary Oldman in bank and you know, the serious performances are the ones that normally get recognition for the Oscars for the television. Do you want to hear those, or do you want to take a break first, And then I'll tell you about the television nomination. Now you can do those now. All right, let's go down the list for best performance by well, first of all. The nominees for best television dramas. The Crown Lovecraft Country, the man, DeLorean, Ozark and ratcheted. I already have people on my social media going. What happened to Bridger? Iton? Yeah. What happened to Queen's Gambit? Bridger Tin just barely barely made the qualification dates. In order to qualify for a Golden Globe nomination. Your show had to have been on the air. January 2022 December 31st 2020 and Bridgeton didn't come out. Until Christmas Day, so it I think it just didn't make the the date qualification. Same with Queen Scamp it because I'm sorry. What wasn't Bridget in like named the number one Netflix show. It is the number one Netflix show right now, but You know that? That's the thing about the, uh, the these nominations. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is literally about 70 people, Their reporters like me, They're people who cover entertainment. For energy for for news outlets around the world, So there's 70 reporters. They in no way reflect. You know what it is really popular. What's really out there? It's Zaveri, very small group are deciding these particular nominations as opposed to the Oscars, where there are thousands of people who decide the nominations who actually work in the industry. On, I think is much more credible for best actress in a drama on television, Olivia Colman in the crown and a chorine in the Crown Jody Coomer for killing Eve Laura Linney and Ozark Sarah Paulson and ratcheted Best actor in a TV drama Jason Bateman and Ozark, Josh O'Connor and the Crown Bob Odenkirk. "Sasha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yaya Abdul Mateen, the Seconds and Franklin Gela now playing on Netflix awards eligible E spoke to my colleague Carl Zimmer about the threat of the British variant of the Corona virus, and Abby Goodnough. About the slow pace of the vaccine rollout. So you have been tracking vaccinations in the U. S. And I recall that the U. S government said that it wanted to vaccinate 20 million Americans by the end of the separate, but that did not happen. About eight million doses have actually been injected. Into people's arms. So How do you account for that really significant gap that failure to meet these goals and what feels like a pretty sluggish start. US vaccinations. There's a million different reasons you could cite here, and every state has its own reasons. But there was some snow storm some bad weather, including a big snowstorm in the Northeast, that bog things down. I've talked to a lot of people who have pointed Tioga holiday weeks, really slowing things down. Staff was low. A lot of people were on vacation. That seems to be a big thing, and we'll find out in the next couple weeks, if, in fact things speed up and and we can say yes, the holidays were big factor. But one thing I'm noticing. That's really interesting is this question that's emerging about how the CDC guidelines are affecting the speed of the rollout in different states. Huh? So describe this question this debate. So the CDC put out these guidelines last month on who should get vaccinated first, you probably heard about them. It starts with health care workers and nursing home residents and the staff who works in the nursing homes and they're not requirements. They're not hard and fast rules that the states have to follow. And so some people think, following these guidelines really strictly Is creating a bottleneck in the system, especially when for whatever reason, many reasons you don't have enough healthcare workers or nursing home residents to vaccinate on a given day or any given week and you get a lot of vaccine sitting around in the freezer. You know, the other camps does that those guidelines are there for a reason. When you do have a very limited amount of vaccine. They're really good advice on who needs it. Most. And also when you start allowing multiple groups to have access to the vaccine at once, it just creates a lot of chaos. I have to imagine that different states are choosing to handle these federal guidelines very differently. Right. It's up to each state how they distribute their supply of vaccine, and it's definitely all over the map, and probably the two states that have represented the extremes of these two arguments are New York and Florida. Good Monday morning and tell me about New York first. How is it handling these guidelines? These vaccines are a valuable commodity. Also initially, Governor Cuomo was sticking really strictly to the guidelines. He talked about finding hospitals who gave shots to anyone who wasn't a frontline health care worker if there is fraudulent vaccination. That is very serious. That provider will lose their license period. He was really using strong language to warn against anyone daring to flout the state rules. I don't care if you're a doctor, You're a nurse. It's a crime in my opinion, and you know as a result, there were a lot of older people in New York who were really frustrated, really ruminating and anxious about when the vaccine was going to be available to them. Uh, okay. So what does this situation in Florida? By contrast. In Florida Governor Just Santis decided he was going to do things a little differently. He is prioritizing health care workers and nursing home residents. But he's also putting in that immediate first group, Senior citizens. Everybody over the age of 65. Is now in the group that's allowed to get a vaccine as soon as it's available to them, huh? And what is governor to Santa's His explanation his rationale for breaking with the CDC guidelines. So governor Just Santa's has talked about this a bit. You have people who On in World War two, survived the Holocaust and said just how important it is to reach the people who he calls the greatest generation and we have a responsibility to stand by. Those folks who've done so much to make our state and country what it is today and I say, and this is also his political base. Lots of People over 65 are Republicans in Florida, So that's a factor, but it's not the only factor. But as you might imagine, with the huge senior citizen population down there, it's a big mess. Some people have heard about vaccination events and shown up and waited in huge long lines even overnight, hoping they'll get a vaccine. Others have, you know, spent hours whole day online trying to score an appointment through these very new registration sites for vaccination events. Some succeed. Many do not, and that's super frustrating to people down there. So clearly, we have a very significant division here in strategy, strict adherence to the CDC guidelines in New York and a much looser or I guess you could call it flexible approach in Florida and since we are talking here About The sluggish pace of the vaccine rollout. In the United States, which is working better, which is seeming more official. Well, if you look at the data, and we know that the data legs and is not entirely accurate, but the data we have now from the CDC says these two states are basically tied in the amount of vaccine. They have administered the number of shots they've gotten into arms so far. But what's interesting is last week, the Trump Administration came out and started to suggest the Florida way was the way to go. And that everyone else should follow their lead. Hmm. So how do you explain that? Because from what you just said, letting people jump the line, violating the CDC guidelines that was not speeding things up. But here, the federal government Was saying you should break from the guidelines. Well, I think part of it is political. And there's just so much pent up demand for this vaccine. So much anxiety and angst in anger about wanting it. Now that The administration's really feeling some pressure about that. In fact, Governor Cuomo in New York up pressured into a similar strategy this past Friday after lots of people around the state had concluded he was being too slow. It was partly due to news coming out that at least some clinics were ending up throwing away unused vaccine because they were afraid to flout his rules and give it to people who weren't in the health care group. Once the vials air open, there's only a pretty finite amount of time. You can keep them around before you have to throw him away, so it's use it or lose it. And there's also just a lot of vaccine sitting in freezer still untapped. So you know there was this this growing disbelief and upset about that fact. And people really lean hard on Cuomo T ease up on his restrictions, and he did just that. So at this point, Cuomo has gotten much closer to the Florida strategy. You know, Florida has opened it to everybody 65 up. Cuomo is sticking for now. Two people 75 older and he's also open it up to certain essential workers. But it's basically taking a page from the Florida playbook. So despite these original guidelines, which a lot of experts saw as important and worth adhering to it, there's like lots of government officials. You know federal officials, state officials seem to be coming around the idea that what's most needed in this moment is flexibility and just getting as many doses. In as many arms as possible. Yes, and in fact, President elect Biden is thinking about a whole different kind of flexibility right now, his team said Friday..

A pedro pascal as the mandalorian really enjoyed his work. Of course Doug jones is captain seru and star trek discovery. Doug jones has made an entire career of playing like the creature in so many films. And you kind of heat. Does it here again. In in discovery he wears like this crazy. These crazy shoes or feet prosthetic whatever. They're called the yes to wear for his character and the way that he has again evolved from season one two now but especially this season. He's just killing it as captain seru on discovery. I really really really like like. I really love his work in that role jason stakes as had lasso. And i just wanna show paul. I really appreciate that. You gave an honorable mention to sasha baron cohen in the trial of chicago seven because when it comes to sasha baron cowan i feel like he's like a jack black type character if it's just a little bit too much it's way too much and he surprised me in that movie of how good he was in that role and he was played such he played the character by funny sarcastic and serious. I thought he did a great job. I'm so glad that you brought that out. and then. I have two runner ups here. Chris evans is anti barber. In defending jacob defending jacob and i said it a set up before i think it's some of his. I think it's his best work. Since doing captain america and i loved him and knives out but i still think this is his best work. Since since leaving the role of captain america. I gotta finish that series. His son is accused of a crime and the thing and it really becomes what will apparent due to save their child and he willie cross certain lines or won't he and he's got pressure from his wife. But i think he does a really great job of playing a character and it's such a serious role i just. I can't praise enough if you've got apple tv. "Blake Stubbs. We covered Chicago movies before we move on just real quickly. What's your favorite movie that was filmed and set in Chicago? Building said in Chicago. Oh, absolutely a thief. I love thief. I could watch Thief any day of the week. I'm a big Michael Mann. That too. I have to. I have to confess. But I also love his L a work one of my favorites of this past year. Was the trial of the Chicago seven. That was such a good movie Now. Was that ever in theaters? No, that was a Netflix produced. Well, okay. The short answer is no because it was widely released on Netflix. But it did. I believe do what a lot of films Netflix does do, and I think they were able to get a screen somewhere, so that if it was any pick up with the Oscars They can say it did have a theatrical release. It is the type of film that could maybe one day get a short theatrical relief. Um, because Netflix, you know will do that if it has to overcome any hurdles with criteria for awards submission, But honestly, this was produced to be released on Netflix. On guy thought it was an excellent pairing of Aaron Sorkin with the cast have to work with. I mean fashion. Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance. Why I could not be a bigger fan of I thought that this movie was maybe and again. This is Erin circuit of a bigger in circumstance. So over the many years I've tried to see his material age. You know? How does it aged with today's, uh, you know, current political climate. This was a movie that I think hit at a good time. I think this was a very well made production. I think that the cast was outstanding. And I think that if you like watching and listening there in Cirque and dialogue, it's filled with little Easter eggs that the fans are gonna love. Um, I know that at some point, it's like he needs to get some new Eastern, like, well, he puts him in there because they're Sure for the things you know, like it. Z like his language is his thing. But I found Sasha Baron Cohen on Mark Rylance, particularly to be outstanding in the incredible Sasha Baron Cohen. Wow nailed it. I'm absolutely huge favorite in that film for me was Michael Keaton. How cool was he? Yes, it is proof that an actor can take what I would what I would call a small amount of screen time because he wasn't like a main star of the film and make a massive impact and and proof that there are no small parts is small actors and Michael Keaton is more on the titan level, in my opinion when he when he gets the right We get the right material. He really brings the juice. I also wanna give a shout out to particular after that has been breaking out the last couple of years. Yeah, Yeah. Abdul Mateen, the second who was on watchman playing Dr Manhattan on HBO this last year. He's in this film. He will also be in the candy man film that will be released in 2021. This guy is outstanding. I have not seen him be bad in anything. Not that I would expect you to be bad, but I mean, he just every time I see him. I'm like, Wow, this guy's got it and and in this particular Film he was. He was quite a presence for the limited time he was given, because of course, these are all historical characters. So like if you're watching, and you know the story of the trial, the Chicago seven. He's only there for a particular short period of time. But what an impression in my opinion, one of the things you mentioned it was historical. The character of Lee whiner was totally different than what he really looked like. He looked like Abbie Hoffman's brother. He had the beard the Afro the whole nine yards. In the movie, he was clean cut. Which was, you know a bit of a stretch, and I think that was because he wasn't that big of a player. In the film on day and they didn't want to take away from Sasha Baron Cohen. I'm sure you know, I think I think they do. They kind of allow it toe visually. It's a downplay so that you know who do it just your focus to at all times, and that's one of those. Dramatic licensing issues that you'll run into. I think whether it's theatrical or cinematic. It happens all the time. Lee whiner on Ah, show Ah, great interview with him and he is such a cool guy. He is an incredible dude like a real deal, hippie and he was just so down to Earth and Oh, it was great. It was great. All right, before a couple more things about well, the year 2020 in in in film, the number one grossing star off 2020. I found was Samuel L. Jackson, who is in like four movies. He was number one, Dwayne Johnson was in number two stars making money out of movies. Right when you do for movies in the year, you're gonna make some money, right? Yeah. I don't know. You would hope you would hope? Yeah. Do you know I don't know if you saw there was a commercial with Samuel L. Jackson was for capital One who? He, You know he does commercial for him. With Santa and Santa was John Travolta. And they're talking. You know, Samuel Jackson makes a great offer from Capital one. And John Travolta says, Well, you know, that's a great offer, You know, have you are you have you been good? Have you done with the bad words? Those air? That's his question to Samuel L. Jackson. He goes, Yeah. Hit John Travolta as Santa wraps and says Ho ho. I don't think so. That was so hysterical. So I had to get I had to get that in. Um I know a big You're a big fan of this movie, which was incredible. It wasn't 2020. It came on 2019, right. Once upon a time in Hollywood. Yeah. So I am a big fan of once upon a time in Hollywood and in 2020, You know, everybody talks about how they were locked, You know, Shut in. You know, you had to find ways to escape. And what What is your form of escapism? I think became a question. Everybody in some form or another had the answer. For me. One of the pinnacles of it was two years ago have at this point. Now we're almost two years removed from it once from the time in Hollywood came out because it's you know, night 2019 was just a 2019. I was so excited for that film. I saw that film with the music box in Chicago. I saw it in 70 millimeter with a packed house full of people. It was probably my last Big cinematic experience, because I I come up to Chicago because I'm down in Peoria, but I went to Chicago for cinematic experiences all the time. Specifically at the music box. I love that fear. On For me. I feel like cinema is a great way to escape. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a big one. For me. I love the characters. I think the movie is goes on a bit of a wild ride, but I also just think it's about people at a certain point. And what Los Angeles in 1969 looks like a lot of the buildings and things that you see are still there, and they all look almost identical like the Cinerama Dome..

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Is the Movie America Deserves
"I guys. Yes. Couple of Baratz here to talk to Amanda and I about one of the one of the movie moments of the year really in in a way and I'm fascinated to talk to you both about it because you guys on your show regularly cover the intersection of culture and politics. That's something that Borat is very focused on. I'm just going to read the full title of this film for the listeners out there. In case they didn't get a chance to check it out. It's called Borat subsequent movie film delivery of prodigious bribe to American regime for make. Benefit. For make benefit once glorious nation of Kazakhstan, I could hardly get through that I wanted to ask you both to start when you saw that Sasha Baron Cohen was returning as. Borat in a in a film, a movie film had, what did you think? Did you think we needed this Brian? Why don't you start us off Of course we need it. Of course, we need it because. The people that Borat likes to have Mary Fun with are now running the country. As opposed to fifteen years ago where they were having a little meeting often some holiday inn somewhere in America. So. We need it more than ever I. Think. David, what about you? Well. I mean to take from O'Brien. Said I mean a lot of people may have made the argument that they're sort of like no comedy in the age of trump right? That like that we that reality is pushed has gone too far and and you know comedies we know it is impossible I mean. I don't think it was an accident that trump was literally a Sasha Baron Cohen character in this movie because trump is metaphorically as Barron coin character from fifteen years ago right? It almost. I I will say when you read the title. Chuckled and there's a point about like halfway through the subtitle. The laugh actually kicks in at first. You're kind of like over here again, and then you're like, okay, they're just GONNA like they're gonNA. Wear me down and I think there was a lot to the movie to me. That I don't like it warm down but it was like I I was skeptical of it at first because I felt like already knew the joke and but but it was comfortable and it was really funny at times there were times where it sort of fell flat but but going back to what I said the. The beginning of this ramble. On when it fell flat, seem like that's when it was like it was like inversely making its own point that there's no joke to tell. You know it was it was a very surreal viewing experience. Amanda do you think that we needed Borat to did you need to? That's the question is it isn't it who needs it and who is receiving it because I grew Brian like we need it in the sense that we are living in the joke now, and we are maybe not living in what Borat Rot. Borat kind of pointed out, and then in a way gave power to and obviously the the media nature of of Borat and the figures who are inborn add is something that Brian and David can speak about at length, but it's really turned on itself and inverted. So many times from two, thousand, six to two, thousand, six correct to two, thousand and twenty that. You can't tell which way is up and that's really interesting, but there's A. It's a bummer to talk about like intention in comedy and effectiveness comedy but I think the way this was framed and when this was released, we're going to have to talk about it a bit and I don't know whether it sticks the landing that it's trying to.

"Maybe it is time for all of us to laugh, but you're gonna have to do it at the expense of mostly conservatives. And Borat subsequent movie film It's released on Amazon Prime. It's out right now. Sasha Baron Cohen returns with Murat, a dumb and bigoted reporter from Kazakhstan. This time he has tasked with delivering his 15 year old daughter as a gift to Mike Pence. And yet again, Bora explores what the film wants you to believe is American culture in particular conservative American culture, which apparently It is comprised of dim witted and backwoods rubes. Now most notable for us in Washington state is that that much talked about And deceptively edited scene at an anti mask rally took place in Olympia, where Bora Cons the crowd into singing a mean spirited song, though even the movie you can kind of tell that the audience was mostly in on the joke America. Jokes, guys level homes. How you gonna do?

Giuliani claims innocence in response to Borat scene
"New York city mayor Rudy Rudy Giuliani says there's a very simple explanation to the compromising scene from the new borat movie that he found himself in. He claims he was talking in his shirt now have you guys heard the back story on this craziness? Tell us. So there's a scene in bore at to nobody has actually seen the scene yet. We've just gotten some still shots from it. But it makes it look like. Giuliani is in himself hands down the pants reclined on a bed after an actress playing baratz daughter in the movie interviews him in a fake or in a hotel room for fake TV. So and then invites him to have a drink with her. We'll Rudy said, that's not really what happened at all. He tweeted at no time before during or after the interview I ever inappropriate if Sasha Baron Cohen implies. He's a stone cold liar. He claims this whole thing is just orchestrated as retaliation for his exposure of the Biden family on behalf of president trump. He says as soon as he realized, something was not right like a little off with the situation he called the police and he said I had to take off the electronic recording equipment that was on me for the interview and he said when the equipment came off, some of it was stuck in the back and my shirt came out a little bit. When he's said, my clothes were totally on I. Giuliani shown in hotel bedroom scene in new ‘Borat’ film
"Back. I hope quantum never thiss vials. All the Democrats general trap. First time comedian Sasha Baron Cohen's mock You. Minarik catches President Trump's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. In a rather compromising situation. ABC is Jason Nathan's and joining us on the coma News line. The film comes out Friday as Prince Worthy as it sounds, Jason. Yeah, I mean, if you're familiar with the board at movies in the Bruno movies and all the stuff that Sasha Baron Cohen does. This is very much along those lines and the scene. That's making headlines today involving Rudy Giuliani, which I can explain, but I'll have to give some spoilers if that's okay. I guess people can plug their ears if they don't want to hear it. How's that starting now? So the scene involves Rudy Giuliani in a hotel room with a reporter who is not actually a reporter, one of Sasha Baron Cohen's people, and she in the movie is actually his daughter, who is supposed to be 15. But the actress herself this 24? Yes, she's interviewing Rudy Giuliani. She looks like a you know, a 24 year old journalist. She doesn't Looks like she's 15 at all one. It's amazing that she's able to get an interview in her hotel room alone with Rudy Giuliani during Cove. It that's pretty incredible speaks to the testament of how good Sasha Baron Cohen and his people are being able to set stuff up like that. But during the interview part and it's part of the movie, she's flirting with him a lot. She's touching his knee. She's being very suggestive. That's all part of the thing. And then at the end of the interview, they get together. They're drinking Scotch by the way during the interview, and she says, Let's finish our drinks in the bedroom to which you go. Okay, and they go in the bedroom, and there's you know, there were there were cameras set up in the living room. But there are no cameras in the bedroom except for a hidden camera and they're helping each other, take their microphones off. So he helped her take her mike off and then his microphone is kind of tucked into his shirt and so in order to get it Now she has to unbuckle his pants, and at one point, he kind of leans back on the bed with his pants on buckled, and then he starts to tuck in his shirt. So it looks like his hands in his pants. And he's in this hotel room with this woman, And then Borat kind of bursts in and craziness ensues. And if you remember a couple months ago, Rudy Giuliani actually called the cops. On Sasha Baron Cohen for that, because he didn't know what was going on. But this footage that you see, and it's getting a lot of headlines today. And I think one headline from the Daily Mail said that Giuliani is fondling himself inside his pants, which is clearly not the case. He's talking his shirt back into his pants. But it's not a good look really for him. For somebody who's the senior advisor to the president to be in a hotel room with a woman like that, with his pants on buckled and drinking Scotch, and he's touching her on the hip. Very suggestively and playfully and says that she should give him her phone number and her address and things like that. It doesn't look great, but there's nothing illegal or necessarily inappropriate going on. There's even a scene with Mike Pence in this movie. Yeah, there is a barren Colin actually goes with CPAC conference. He's in there dressed up as President Trump and he's running around with this girl who is supposed to be his daughter over his shoulder. He's trying to give her as a peace offering from In Kazakhstan to Mike Pence. He wants to give Mike Pence his daughter, his only daughter, and that's part of the whole big, so he's right. Actually, he's running around as my pencil speaking on the stage gets in, and he makes a commotion, and then you get escorted out by a lot of people. So it's It's definitely Sasha Baron Cohen getting himself into those situations that we've seen him do before, which could be uncomfortable but also very, very funny. And also, there's a lot of social and political messages going on kind of trying to get to the heart of A lot of people's racism and prejudice and things like that, In a very funny way. 'The West Wing' enlists big names for its When We All Vote reunion special
"Thanks. I'm a big fan of Aaron Sorkin and tell us why This is a good time for me in television, because I like him so much. He absolutely if you didn't watch it yesterday, a cz, always with streaming. You can watch it at your leisure. But yesterday they dropped on HBO, Max. Ah, Special reunion of the West Wing cast is probably his most legendary TV show The West Wing and gathered almost everybody from the cast for Martin Sheen and Allison Janney and Rob Lowe and so forth. To recreate an episode from one of the early seasons as a theatrical staged event in an empty theater, But they filmed it like it was a play and it was in that shifted from scene to scene and it was really cleverly done, but also just reminded you how Wonderful that Siri's wass and how inspirational it was, even though it was about politics. So if the dueling if the dueling town halls and so you may be this would've last night, but it's still out there, but even more so today, Netflix drops another Aaron Sorkin project. Which he wrote and directed. It's called the Trial of the Chicago Seven, and it goes back to the sixties, when those counterculture figures Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin and Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale and others were put on trial for inciting the riots that disrupted the 1968 Democratic convention. It was a big media circus, and this film looks like it's got it all and including a terrific cast, including two Emmy winners from this season.
