Why Is the Winchester House Built So Strangely?

"Most of us want to get home construction over as soon as possible, we worry about the expense and complained about the inconvenience but four Sarah Winchester construction was a way of life for thirty eight years. She had construction going twenty four hours a day at her home in San Jose, California. This was no ordinary construction job, though, the house is an oddball labyrinth of rooms that at one point reached seven stories. It's filled with weird things like stairs and doors. The go nowhere. Not to mention the ghosts. Sarah Winchester didn't start out looking for this kind of project born Sarah party in eighteen thirty nine. She was one of the social stars of New Haven, Connecticut, although she only stood four feet ten inches. She was known for her beauty and sparkling personality in eighteen sixty two Sarah, married William Winchester, who has the air of the Winchester, repeating arms company, the company had developed the repeating rifle a gun that was easy to reload and fired rapidly at a rate of one shot. Every three seconds. The gun was used by northern troops in the civil war. And it was also known as the gun that won the west the young couples started a family in eighteen sixty six but their daughter any died in infancy and Mr. Winchester died of tuberculosis fifteen years later distraught over these losses, MRs Winchester, visited a medium for spiritual guidance. The medium told her that the Winchester family had been struck by terrible curse and was haunted by the ghosts of all those killed by the Winchester rifle their spirits were seeking vengeance. And the only way to appease them was to build a house for them. But the ghosts had another request that the house never be completed never stopped building. The medium told MRs Winchester, or you will die. We can't know exactly how she interpreted this advice. She might have thought the spirits would get her if she stopped or she might have seen the continuous construction as a path to eternal life. Mrs Winchester, headed west to build a home for herself and her ghosts. She bought a six room farmhouse on one hundred sixty two acres in California and set to work she served as her own architect. But it's possible that some ghosts had a hand in designing the house as well. Every night. Mrs Winchester would retreat to her say aunts room and receive instruction from the spirits on the progress of her house, the next morning should present her construction workers with hand-drawn sketches of what was to be done. Sometimes it seems she didn't care what she built as long as she could hear the hammers of her crew. The crew might spend a month constructing a room only to be ordered to destroy it the next month because MRs Winchester paid well, no one disputed her instructions. A MRs Winchester had inherited twenty million dollars and just less than half the Winchester, repeating arms company stock that left MRs Winchester with a daily income of about a thousand dollars to spend on her house. That's equal to about twenty five thousand dollars a day in today's money. But what if those doors and stairs to nowhere doors may open onto walls or in the case of? Second-story door to the outside resulting in a big fall for anyone who might try to exit that way a closet door on the second floor seance room opens onto a first floor sink several feet below the stairs to nowhere are pretty much. What they sound like stairs. Go up until they reached the ceiling, and then they just stop. These might have a simple explanation. The stairs were likely part of the original house that MRs Winchester bought and when she started adding onto the home she covered up the stairs. Whether it was accident or on purpose. Mrs Winchester, usually covered up her mistakes by just continuing to build around them because she had no master plan for the house. Her architectural ideas didn't always work out since she had no deadline for completion should either. Tear down the mistake or cover it up with something else. But the new stairs. She built also zigzag back and forth going around and around in circles and most are only two inches about five centimeters tall, some people. Think that these touches were designed to confuse the evil spirits that were haunting MRs Winchester, the height of the stairs served a very specific purpose, though, she had very bad arthritis and these. Small stairs allowed her to get around. However, MRs Winchester might have deliberately installed some of the other weird touches believing that ghosts would get lost on stairs. That went nowhere or accidentally step out a door that went outside if the sound strange to you today, you're not alone. Even at the time that MRs Winchester was building the house. She was regarded with suspicion some dot her and eccentric with too much money on her hands and her home took on the nickname mystery house, not long after her death because MRs Winchester left, no, diary or other communication. We honestly have no idea. What might have been going on in her mind? What we do have is her house, which is still open to tourists. Mrs Winchester died in her sleep in nineteen twenty two and the house was sold to a group of investors who wanted to create a tourist attraction to this day. It's hard to know exactly how many rooms are in the house because people keep getting lost when they try to count. But it's estimated that about one hundred sixty rooms are in the home. It had reached seven stories by nineteen o six for the top three floors collapsed after the nineteen o six San Francisco earthquake. Some other famous numbers associated with the house include. It's forty-seven fireplaces seventeen chimneys to basements. Six kitchens ten thousand window panes and four hundred and sixty seven doorways despite these impressive numbers. There are only two mirrors. Mrs Winchester thought ghosts were afraid of their own reflection. Mrs Winchester, also had an obsession with the number thirteen many things installed in the home feature. Thirteen of something a thirteen window panes thirteen wall panels thirteen sections of flooring thirteen stairs in each staircase. Their thirteen bathrooms sinks that have thirteen drain holes and the sales room has thirteen coat hooks and beyond the stairs and windows to nowhere. There are other architectural oddities all over the house stare posts were installed upside down and chimneys served. No, purpose are all over the house. Their cabinets that are less than an inch deep. That's about two and a half

"Where she built true says the gen wouldn't get us there. You know, royals. Had something else in mind or you're talking about the Winchester house here in California. Remember how Sarah Winchester built on all those extra rooms. So the ghost good. Excused and wouldn't bother her. And you know, she she kinda lost it there at the end. But she had in mind. He's rooms went nowhere. Yeah. And the spirits would get lost. And they would get lost right now. I know that Egypt's leasing Jan. Maybe they you know, they wanted the royals because they were. Have dress. And maybe that's a great big windows. Well, I've been coast to coast listener for a long time. So I'm really getting out there. Maybe dorothy. Dorothy, I'm going to jump in and say that you are onto something my new, and I have talked about this, the the blocks and the rooms inside of the great pyramid are acoustically tuned. They resonate at while many frequencies, but one of the main ones as a four forty which resonates through out the great pyramid. Doesn't it? My new right? And I was so there have a couple of comments about your question doors. He's so I if all Christopher done when he was talking with Jimmy are few days ago. I think if you ask Christopher done if if his model is theory makes has room for the extra spaces in the pure Mckee may say, yes, so I could be because of these resonances, and you know, electro-magnetic energy focusing and all those things. So that's the first part to your one answer. The other answer about you. We were talking about spirits of the king. So I, you know, in sort of the same vein, I think so first of all the big make rooms for spirits of the king and for to receive offerings, basically. So we know that Joe Sarah had a small room in front of his pyramid. Where a statue of him was placed, and it was basically looking out. So the P called and him. You know, you ask about him, you know, so he you'll know his I actually had a room small room and a statue of him was placed in that room. And then it was walled up. And what was that four? It was for spirit to receive offerings from his family. And so I think you are. I think you're absolutely right. And in fact, what you're asking is very much in line with what the agent gypsies believed that you know, that spirits were very much there. They were very much present. And they just have to be housed inside of either a mummy or statue. And then it became alive, and and it was still interacting with family members. When the friends great calls tonight. Let's go west of the Rockies to Garrett up in Portland, Oregon, carrot welcome to coast. Mattie. Great to have you on board. I have a question about the six. Yes. All right. So about a year ago their videos pictures starting to surface, we arrest rear of this stinks right down at that cobbled. Well, wouldn't really call them Kabul? Millions of walks. Yeah. There's a there's an opening. Yes. I take it that within the past year. The authorities have removed about a half dozen blocks. Oh, back by the tail by the tail in the back. Yes. Yeah. Southside ladder gate over it. Do you have any comments like we're looking for hidden chambers? But obviously, we've already found them, right? So when we get to know what's inside. Now, he's talking about the south side of the rear of the sphinx. The cy. I see the south side. Yes, there is. Robert. So Robert scan did show on both sides..

"Come on Rita was close, right? She played Maria Altmann. It's driving me crazy trying to think who the actress was trying to think of Helen Mirren absolutely loved her in that movie. And then we happen to see her. In in the movie Winchester, he played Sarah Winchester, and that was a great movie. If you if you like horror stories ghosts and the like. Apparently based on a true story of the guy who developed Winchester one gesture corporation on Chester rifles and his widow had built his mansion with hallways and stairways going to nowhere. Helen Mirren played the widow, and it was interesting story truly was somewhat based on fact. But she has become. One of our favorite favorite actresses. She is fabulous. Anybody better than her as an actress just curious our phone number six five one. Nine eight nine nine two two six toll free eight six six nine eight nine nine two to six. So it's woman and gold is the name of that. And we were talking about this incredible artwork? Paintings and the like sculptures. We're stolen from Jewish families. By the Nazis. And these these are treasures. For the most part the missing today. But like Maria Altmann discovered the painting that her family owned for parents owned the woman and gold was hanging in an art museum in Paris. And when she tried to retrieve it when you said, no, it's our painting. And she filed a lawsuit against them. And it went from court to court to court. Eventually ended up in the US supreme court. And they ruled. In favor of her. It was just it was so disappointing. That over in France. The Nazis invaded their country that an art museum in France. Would defend the artwork was there is rightfully hers, even though they knew. That it was stolen by the Nazis. To me that that's hard to wrap my head around. You would think that the Parisian authorities would do everything they could. To get that painting to the rightful owners. Did you ever see the movie the monument man, starring John Goodman? One of the actors in that Bill Murray was in it. You know that that's what. That's what those guys set out to do. After the war Hildebrand girl. "Whether arthur okay this is interesting so like an antigun message karadzic and then by the end of the movie i wasn't quite so sure whether there was an antigun now no i see i certain things said it's necessarily an anti gone message although i think he hits well i guess ultimate hit his because it's it's an anti selling arms to make profit i think that that stepped in of that is the the pain of sarah winchester of course she could have given her foot soon away by her she chose not to do that that's what i feel if there is any kind of a message in the movie it could be there and very much in american story oversee an old filmed in australia yes while we had to what's the first summer imai experience while ever i've not is unheard of identical twin brothers of the directors the spirit brothers and that was an experience as well yard at la that added to the level of vibe of the whole thing they were wonderful yes it was a well but where we replicate the house in melbourne basically so you actually hadn't seen the san jose house until after you'd finish filming them no we did shoot a little little bit they're just ciller a little tiny exterior of the house we short there at my swiftly shot melbourne would have you made allen of the was throw a convulsion revolution in the entertainment industry which has followed in the wake of the harvey weinstein revelations it seems to be exponential longtime coming a lot of it have to say i was i was pasni unaware of but then i would be because i'm too old in a because this stuff happens to fair young women at essay times up i say about time about time times up taken a long time for us to get here and i think the the very positive element in it is it it spreads far beyond the extraordinary and appalling behaviour as far as i can make out of carvey weinstein and many others the discussion has spread so much further which are that that's what i am so thrilled about is confrontation of why is that not more women in the store.

"Anyway let's talk about something else going on here today we got a couple of new movies i know you want to talk about black panther belisce start with winchester that's also opening tonight yeah and and technically this movie i saw a before i talk to you last week that it wasn't allowed to talk about technically i'm still not allowed to talk about it because the embargo is not until the movie comes out but screw it like what are they it's going to be open in less than three exactly exactly opens and you both been the east coast three hours and it's not very good at an unusually youths tell that because of a movie embargo like i'm not let it talked what's movie opens it three hours i am a to talk about black panther and opens a three weeks so that's all you resorted to now uh but with cooler winchester is is is a true story of a sarah winchester whose uh late husband own the winchester gun company and in real life after he guide she started building under her house in these really weird reweighed ways nobody ever figured out why and the rumor and the myth is always that she was trying to hide ghosts in this movie sorta takes it seriously in says like oh so there's these goes hiding her because of all the people that winchester guns the ira killed and it's kind of interesting blood than you know like a horror story with these sort of uh political themes about warmongering guncontrol at is not a ably leitner over the head with it be you see like what helen mirren sought in the movie you even understand wind actors her calibre was it oh this could be a good movie uh it just the execution is terrible it's not very scary um it's not as beautiful as it should be it's this incredible manchin you never really get a big uh a great sense of how big the mansion is a feels like something like two or three sets um so it's not very good and if you're curious about the story i i wouldn't is not horrible improbably enjoy it but i mean i forgot about at the second i walked out until i remembered i the talk to you.
