"Also on Ted Lasso, there's been a lot of recognition for a lot of these characters, but to heed jamo is plays Sam, who's this young player who really got kind of built out in the second season in terms of what his character was. And I'm delighted to see him on that list. Same with Nick Muhammad, you know, Nick Muhammad, the first season he was a little bit of a sweetheart character, the second season who was a little more complicated. There's just a ton in this to be happy about. And look, I want Henry Winkler to live to be a 150 years old because everything he does makes me happy. And Tony Shalhoub, gosh, and Bo Yang. I mean, what's not to like in this category, nothing. Here, here. So for supporting actors in a comedy series, we have some more kind of bunching of shows here. So for Abbott elementary, Janelle James and Cheryl Lee Ralph are nominated for Ted Lasso. You've got Sarah Niles, Juno Temple, Hannah waddingham, and then there's also Kate McKinnon for Saturday Night Live. Alex borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Hannah einbinder for hacks. Another pretty stacked category and a little birdie told me that you are very excited about Sarah Niles, especially for Ted Lasso. I really am, you know, Sarah Niles came in playing this therapist who is maybe like one of my favorite second season editions to a show ever. And I think she's her work, especially at the beginning was so subtle that I wasn't sure. And actually throughout is so subtle that I wasn't sure she was going to get recognized and I'm absolutely delighted. And you had written about this character in this piece about sort of the black lady therapist as a kind of a TV trope and how she had kind of managed to be a new spin on that. And I absolutely agree. I'm so, so happy about that nomination. Yeah, same. That seems like ages ago. That's the other weird thing about this season is that some of these shows are from last year, like last summer and then some of them are from just as recently as two months ago. So it's weird to think about, but I have to shout out both Janelle James and Shirley Ralph who I'm so excited to see in his category especially Cheryl Lee Ralph, who just like she's always been such a great presence and I'm excited for her that she's kind of having this renaissance moment after having so many great years of being in the original cast of dream girls and then playing the stepmother on moesha. I just love her so much. Here here. A lot of good energy in this category too. Good stuff. So coming up we'll be talking about the nominees and snubs in the drama and limited series categories.

"A good kid now if you could hear what he said as that clip trailed off. It was a goat cheese salad. And then a back lit hammock, a simple glass of wine, so he's set up this song that is kind of a breakdown of what a very basic Instagram page looks like. But then there's a breakdown in the song where suddenly the woman he is channeling is paying tribute to her late mother. And it is such a Rorschach test listening to the way that breaks down because it is a very emotional and very sad and very beautiful. But it is also mocking the way that we package our grief in such a digestible way. And so, to me, he's finding this remarkable moment of empathy in the song, but empathy and mockery are orbiting each other like a binary star. And you can see it as like looking at these kind of public performative expressions of grief and how they all start to blur together. I'm so fascinated by how sophisticated that song is while also mocking people's Instagram feeds, which is just the easiest biggest fattest juiciest target imaginable. There's just that turn in the song that is shocking. Yeah, I think I've definitely heard the complaints from people who find this to be both ultimately a guy being very unkind about the creative pursuits of women. And also a guy who's trying a little bit to distance himself from whiteness in a way that maybe is not successful. But I agree with you Stephen that I think what makes it effective is that term into the recognition that there's also some shared humanity in those kinds of Instagram feeds. Despite their cliches. So my first pick, look, you know, the second season of Ted Lasso on Apple TV plus, some people didn't like, I happened to love. This season, to me, the first season of Ted Lasso set up a very wonderful but somewhat simple dynamic of this kind of bumbling coach who comes in. And impresses everybody and everybody learns that they really can trust him. And in the second season, they did a lot more to explain that Ted's relentless positivity. He's a soccer coach who was an American football coach and went over to become a soccer coach a football coach in the UK. And I think his relentless positivity is something that they interrogated very effectively in the second season. And sometimes in order to do that, you actually have to go ahead and introduce a psychological professional. And that is what they did. They brought in a therapist, a specialist therapist who was going to work with the team and her name is Sharon fieldstone. She's played by the wonderful Sarah Niles. And she is one of my favorite additions to any cast in any second season ever, which I think is particularly impressive given how strong that ensemble was in the first season. You know, for the most part, she is very she somewhat personally withholding with Ted, which is hard for him because he wants to go in and be everyone's friend and she wants to maintain her professionalism. And then there's a moment where she has a bicycle accident. And he is the one who winds up getting called to the hospital to help her out. And I want to play a little bit of that. Oh, he's not my husband. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ain't ranging on these fingers. No, we're just Friends. Colleagues. Friendly, colleagues. I don't have a husband. Yeah, but not in a sad way. You know, she's just fiercely independent. See what I mean? I'm sorry, doctor fieldstone? Hospital policy states. They had trauma patients. They can not leave unattended. Let me help you out bets, sweetheart. Thank you. I love this episode because it complicates this relationship between the two of them. And I love the way that they opened up this character who seemed a little bit literally began as a joke in a commercial. In a bunch of NBC sports commercials and has become this really complicated dude. And I really admire the way they did that. And I loved this season. And I am 100% pro Ted Lasso season two. Glenn go to you for your next pick light on me. Okay. The show the other two on HBO Max, it's a joke factory and I love that, but it also has a very lived in very knowing sense of humor about queer life that I love that. In the second episode of season two, which is a kind of modern day farce. The character of Carrie played by drew tarver and his new boyfriend Jess played by Gideon glick, are settling into a very. Safe vanilla basic kind of relationship. They end up meeting this other gay couple who are pretending to be father and son. So they can go on Druze mothers morning talk show follow me here and have the quote unquote son played by Noah Galvin, come out to his quote unquote father, played by tak Watkins so they can take home a $25,000 prize. So despite the two of them engaging in arrant fraud, this twink and daddy couple are shown to be much more sex positive and healthy and communicative and just happier than drew and Jess are, because droids are striving for this very complete heteronormative existence. And that is just fascinating for me to see and bracing for me to see. And then when a drew and Jess interrupt the twink and the daddy at a restaurant just a few minutes, after the twink and daddy have gone on grindr to find a third do to take back to their hotel, the twinkling the debt then have to continue to pretend to be father and son, because drew and Jess think they are and it's drew's mother's talk show. So this clip picks up when the dad sees the third guy who's played by the very funny gnome ash, approaching the restaurant and goes out and says, okay, I'll pay you if you just say that you're my son, you're straight and you're from Kansas. I'm his son. I'm straight and I'm from Kansas. Yeah, yeah, cool. What's Kansas like? You have a girlfriend there? Yeah. She has long hair and red nails. Expert girlfriend have her right there. Expert girlfriend having. Who am I? What a great show. And what a great moment. And what a great episode really that episode works. And we haven't even talked about any other other plot threads about particular episode, which are also just as fun. So that is the other two. It is streaming on HBO Max. Ayesha speaking of things that you love, you have another pick for us. Yes, yes. Do y'all know Trish, Trish? Is a woman you can count on? Trish, at Christmas, forget it. She's buying gifts for everyone. So I loved barb and star, go to vista del mar a lot. I think it was a movie that more people need to see. I'm basically picking things that we didn't cover in full on PCH. And I want to make sure that people find out about. And so I highly recommend everyone go check it out. It's streaming on Hulu now. But what I love about barb and star go to vesto del mar, which is about two middle aged women from Nebraska, played by Annie mumolo, who plays barb and Kristen Wiig, who plays star. Kristen Wiig also plays a few other characters as well. But they decide to leave Nebraska going a girls trip to vista del mar in Florida. And on the way to vista del mar on the plane, they concoct this very elaborate narrative about a woman named Trish, a woman that we, they don't know, but she exists. And so they list off all these things that she is. This is a minute and a half ish long gag that just keeps going and going in the best way possible and getting more and more ridiculous with each moment. And you realize once you've watched the film that there is a payoff towards the end of the whole story. But I want to hear just this banter that I think is just so emblematic of the whole movie itself and the real chemistry that Kristen Wiig and Annie mama lo have as these characters. Really? Trish loses whatever her ears in a twister, but not her hearing. She's a storm chaser. Her mom is not want her to be. Well, their relationship is tough. Trisha's always wanted to be a portrait photographer. She loves people. She would always say a person's face is a lot about how they look. Oh, it's beautiful. Okay. It's so absurd..

"I just loved that part colosio question. Absolutely who is your favorite character. Other than ted. My favorite character. And i can never decide whether ted is you know. Do i include ted or not include type because i have complex feelings about ten this season. It's dr sharon for sure. I think she is. Maybe one of the best second season additions to an ensemble. Ever in terms of complicating how everybody else relates to each other. I also in terms of sheer comedy. It's a coach beard. Who talks so little. But every little thing he says and every little noise he makes. There's a part. I know that you like me. Enjoyed the ted giving a speech about rahm communism. People say something wrong does not the way i see it guy. Here's what i believe. In communism rahm communism that is and it's just this very you can't tell whether he's sort of bummed it's not regular communism or that he thinks. This is a weird lecture. But every time i watched that clip. It made me giggle so much. And it's the same thing when he sort of every time he makes some like odd noise or exclamation. It makes me laugh so much. He does a great deal with very little on the page true and his expression snow. It's really white something. What do you like so much about. dr sharon. Is it her as a character is it. Also her as a catalyst for what's happening now as the story goes on. Yeah it's both. I mean i. I am a fan of good representations of therapy and the the meaning of therapy. I am very fond of her as a catalyst to change the direction of of some of what was happening on the show. I think she has really you know. I have used the word complicate a lot in talking about this season. I think she has really. Her presence has really helped to complicate. Ted's sense of himself. If the first season was all about everybody learning that ted really could do this job and could inspire people and all that stuff she has really come in and it's become clearer and clearer that there are as you said earlier limitations to his sort of inspirational jabber and also. I think he's become sort of more performance active. And it's i think her presence and the fact that she is so low key has kind of emphasized that a lot of his kind of business that he's constantly doing feels forced in a way. That sort of makes you think there's something going on with this guy. That's not just you know. This has been the season where they've really been like. How did he get this way. Like how does a person get this way Which are not always gonna see with the character who starts out really broad. So i really love her. I love that. Sarah niles performance which is really she just resists the urge to get into any of the broader comedy. That practically everybody else on that show is eating up at least some of the time she just. Has this really steady really quiet. She's very kind but she's not no. She's a therapist. She's not there to be sillier performed for people she's a doctor and i love that character in that way i think also in the final episodes we're gonna see..

"Frank langfitt welcome to the show right great to be your linda. I was so excited when i heard that you wanted to do this. for anybody. Who is not familiar with ted last. I'll i'll just say it is the story of american football coach. Ted lasso. who gets a job coaching richmond. Which is an english soccer team. Or you know football team for more basics. You can listen to our previous episode about season wine. We covered the show back in november of last year. Season to find. Ted played by. Jason davis confronted by a lot of his own insecurities after the arrival of a therapist named dr sharon fieldstone played by sarah niles. He's still surrounded by assistant coaches nathan and beard team owner rebecca. And her right. Hand higgins young star jimmy tart retired player roy kent and his girlfriend kiely who works for the team in marketing and a big ensemble of young players. Frank i have to ask you. You are an american working in the uk. Just like ted. How do you think the show captures that experience. I think it's what i love about. Ted was he was just sort of this extreme version almost of an english persons worst nightmare of an american. You know un- unbelievably friendly in a way that was just totally contextual inappropriate. You know so optimistic full of these aphorisms and he's really sort of a stereotype particularly in american in london. So i was. I immediately was interested in the show and just wanted to see it. Sorta from the for the cross cultural references and to see how we got on. And how the this entire you know. English cast got along with him. Yeah you were kind enough to go out in london to the pub. This is the pub where the show is shot right. This is the the pub in the show. it is yeah and you spoke to some locals about ten lasso. Yeah i was talking to him in name just mccrory. She works for an american company in london. And i said you know do you. In any way relate to kind of the culture clash when ted shows up and she said absolutely and a lot of it was americans being so effusive And this is how she put it when we were chatting in the pub the pricing when someone says something good we don't really want to praise them up but move on but i find it american culture. It's let's keep harping on about how we did. Give.

That was the purpose like you said of you know but your do you want to binge it because you feel like the episodes really haven't been great. I really liked to show. I like the way i liked it. They introduced the new character. I believe her name was sarah niles. Yeah the therapist. I like that. I like you know the way it builds up then it was like i see what episode and then it's like. Oh there's no you can't you can't be binging service and give people binging at this time. Did this day and age and be like oh never mind back to two thousand six twenty one now. I watched stillwater on my tv. Two days ago like the movies aren't happening. you needed. let us binge whatever show we want be. It's so true. But i think there is like a good medium instead of putting all the time three at time content. I'll take anything one at a time on friday. i remember. we'll wait a minute. This a new one on what it is. It used to be when you only had three channels back in the day kids. Yes we only had three channels. Yes you had to do this. You had to wait week after week after week. Now we'll stay for ten hours to was true walls like the crown you. Yes by the way i i wish you do a crime special. I will say this to ten lassos. Too short to there is not an hour. it's about thirty minutes Under thirty minutes or getting a little bit over. As i think that's the issue too so it's like you just get into it and then it's gone. Okay now it's getting is and this is clearly backlash from who we had so much to say about ten laps. How old is bonnie leg. When tv was three up general thing abc nbc and cbs. Yes are you. She was like she was like kids. I'm like there's no kids wants to show.

"So this is the group that watched for seasons. Now you be turned tune out if you haven't yet it's the same. It's the same people coming back and seasons two more about shit. The people are dealing with internally than any external events and there is a sports therapist. Sports therapist joins the team which fits right in with that whole interns. Got a great vibe by the way just absolutely kind of sets it off in a different direction. Yeah she's she's great sarah niles and what she a lot of especially for someone just came in. She has a pretty decent amount of with jason and just hold their own. Just they're together so yeah. And in the meantime that now minor spoiler for those who didn't watch season but also you know it's been a while there's just the fight to get back to the family. There's a i think you mentioned the The whole waiting for the backlash. Because i think the only criticism i've seen about this show anywheres from hardcore football fans being gatekeepers of soccer and being like oh this is actually as a pro soccer player. Anything like that. That's like literally the only criticism. I've seen anywhere of the show. Which i'm sure is good because those aren't the people you're trying to appeal to. I think with this show right. I mean in a way. I would hope you know. Soccer fans would also be into it. But yeah there's a. There's a gatekeeper element among throughout sports fan. But there's a uniquely pernicious among soccer fans. And i i noticed that early on especially like oh darn it but now fucking klopp likes the show and show. Alex morgan likes the show. So like come on..
