For that story, we looked to the renowned chef Auguste escoffier. In honor of Queen Victoria's jubilee event, the chef combined her love of cherries with a simple syrup and warm brandy, which he lit on fire for a dramatic finish. It turns out that escoffier had a knack for making ladies feel special. He designed the dessert peach melba for Nellie melba and a macaroon for Sarah Bernhardt bearing her name on national cherries jubilee day celebrate something special with a flaming dessert that has passion written all over it. "And if they don't have it, they will usually just suggest something comparable, right? Yes. Yeah. 'cause if they don't have any tulips, they'll be like, well, you know, these sort of teacup roses or something. I mean, probably the most sought after flour, any time of year is a peonies because they're so big and lush and some of them are fragrant. I can't even picture a penny. What does a peony look like? They're round and fluffy. But in a floral way. In a flower like way. Yes. Oh. Oh, weird. You know what they look like? What? To me, is a really big carnation. I afraid that I don't know anything about floors. So you might need to do a side by side. Yeah, because this is, I mean, here's some pities, right? Yeah. So, yeah. And I like the idea of sort of the multicolor one. Like this one seems to have a lot of different colors attached to it. Those, that's a Sarah Bernhardt. So when flowers all get their own individual names, I don't know what she did to get a PNA named after her. But that is, yeah. Those are a long-standing tried and true variety. So those peonies, season or not, you can usually find them. Wait, Sarah Bernhardt? Sarah. Yeah, I think she was an actress in England in the early 1800s. Late 1800s. Really? Yeah. Sandra Bernhard, of course, stand up comic. All right. Sarah Bernhardt, I think, was a famous actress on the stage in London. I can't remember. Yeah, I can't remember the years, but so people would constantly give her flowers. Because she was an actress, and she was, you know, again, I have a lot of big gestures today. And the English definitely, they go way back with their floral knowledge and cultivating, so there's a lot of English florists that set the standard. Have you ever wanted to go to like the Netherlands and see the tulips? Oh yes. That actually is another really fun story. When I first started teaching floral design, it was with flower school in New York. And I was like running a small shop for them. So the students, the professional students, could come and run a shop, right? But what to do in between classes. So I was there, right? And to help out when they were there. And so flower school pre-pandemic did an annual trip to Holland and you could see the field and you could see the processing and packing and everything. And I ordered flowers for the shop while the owner was there with a group of students. So the box and he saw them going by on the conveyor belt. So he grabbed.

"And I was in a room with them on 28 or something. Kevin find someone, by the way, for me. I have my lunches with him and he's like a mentor to me. Yeah. But they're laughing and they're like, wow, and they recommended me to somebody. And it's like, wow, that it's good. Okay. Well, I'm going to ask you a question now. How did mad TV come about? How did your at the how long are you at the groundlings before like you start to work outside of the groundlings? I had been at it, I don't know, I got into the growlings. I got into the groundlings the weekend of the LA riots. 1992. Was that why they rioted? Apparently. They did not care. They were upset about Rodney King's beating and also my admission into the groundlings. No McDonald's no peace. I remember that. So I had a rough time. I couldn't get I would do shows at the groundings that we get decent write ups in the paper or whatever. But I couldn't get an agent I couldn't get work at all. And I so you didn't have any. I couldn't everyone else. Everyone else I knew had agents managers, whatever. I couldn't get any traction anywhere. And then I started writing really shitty Roger Corman movies. Oh, you worked in that in that camp. Yeah. I had a meeting with him when I first came out here too. That's amazing. Yeah. Because he held out so many people. But I beg to differ with the portrayal of him as the Sarah Bernhardt of whatever. Oh, really? Yeah. He was like, okay, go. No. He was no saint. Blade and hire me. Yeah. But I will say, it was an opportunity in that if you wanted to work for free more or less, you could learn. And so that was kind of my but I thought, oh, I'll never be an actor because it's just not happening. Maybe I'll be a writer director. And so I wrote and directed a bunch of shitty movies. We have to have a film festival all night. And then the minute I decided I wouldn't be an actor and dedicate myself to being a writer director, that's when acting where it came at me like a train and the lesson is give up. But I swear to God, I tried and tried and tried and nothing happened, and then when I stopped trying then it happened. Desperation is not sexy and in any way. Any time you hear a chick that's like, I've just been looking for a boyfriend looking for stop fucking looking for me. Stop it. It's true. I still live your fucking life in this life will happen. It is, when I don't give a shit, you give off a vibe that it's something about it that it's like the other person wants to win you. Yeah. It's like, but to this day, if you asked me to go in tomorrow for an audition for something, I would probably fuck it up. The minute I have to audition for something or prove myself in that way. It's probably DNA shit. I don't know, but now it doesn't matter. I was going to offer you a part of my own family, but I guess I can't now because of that. No, you can offer it. Offer only. Oh, your honor. Now, that's what you're thinking. So what happened after, so what was the thing once you stopped giving your shit? I got an audition for mad TV and SNL the same week. Wow. Oh my God. And I should add, I'm sorry, a sitcom for a network, which I'd never been offered a series regular potential, I should say..

"Now let's go on into episode nineteen of the sunshine gardening podcast welcome to the sunshine gardening. Podcast this gardening show will equip and inspire avid gardeners with weekly tips and tricks. To help them navigate the gardening world. The show will also highlight specific growing requirements for several plants. South assemble shine brighter over there kentucky garden and now here's that ray of sunshine garden enthusiasts and horticulture extension agent kristin hildebrand with the university of kentucky. Cooperative extension service. Alright they wish the have on the podcast with us is dennis mortgage is the washington county extension agent for horticulture and. I'm so excited to have him. Dennis is actually worked sixteen years in extension and he's going to be talking to specifically how to get those peonies ready for planting this season high. Dennis how's everybody up there. Yeah we're so glad to have you on the podcast with us today. And one of my favorite flowers and i guess it's more of a perennial type lower in the garden is peonies and so i know that i've watched you in previous years present on peony so under you'd be the expert to hit up expert. It is one of my favorite perennials. I grew up with pennies grandmother. Adam they're still in her own home place you know everybody's gone now but it's still come up and blown and one of those flowers. That really will outlive us if they're taking care of her left alone. That's very true. And if you plant it in the right spot and in the right place as we of preaching extension it will be there for a long long time even pass some of what our expiration date is. That's true so dennis tell us about some of the different types in cultivars of peonies that are out there because there is a lot to choose from. There is a lot in most of us. Know the herbaceous fanny which is the bit most of our grandparents or grandmothers had in their yard and you know they grow and flower in their live their life during the growing season in wins it false or even disease takes tops off. They go back to the ground and they come back from from new growth each season and they bloom from budge. That were formed underground. We have the tree peonies. Most are also familiar with those. They're more of a shrub or small shrub. And you know they have actual woody growth on them in their flower buds of winner above brown or woody tissue like any other shrub would and then we have the intersectional peonies also sometimes called the toes and they are a cross between a herbaceous being in a tree peony and that's how we get a lot of these colors into our cima herbaceous pennies because these some of these intersections and or winter a little bit of woody tissue above brown usually. It's only a few inches but if we have a moment of minimum we'll get a little bit of each issue on those two three maybe four inches last year. Some of the thousand six inches of brown. But you'll get more flowers if you get that on those because you'll get flowers from the herbaceous material coming up in the spring and you'll also get a few flowers met woody tissue that of a wintered above brown but the other most people don't really realize there are three main types of peonies out there and like you said that herbaceous perennials. That seems to be the type that most of our grandparents had been they last for a long time. But there's also these newer ones trae peonies in the intersectional. Peony that actually you're a pretty made. You can have a lot more colors to those than you came with herbaceous. Absolutely that's how we got somebody different colors in the peonies nail because we got the color from the tree pennies which they came a lot more colors and even yellow originally and our basis didn't but now that we've brought some of these herbaceous type or similar basis which would be the intersectional. We can just call him average whatever everyone all and that way. We've got yellow in those guineas. Way on a lot of varieties out there. And we've you know they expanded to colored by getting these cross. Originally it was very difficult to get those two crawls but there was a haberdasher by the last thing ito it was. I wanna get those cross since. Then we've gotten probably thousands of process since fan but it took a lot of work to get that done but now that we've done without a lot of new colors on new sour forms. There's just a lot out there. Is anyone out there. Goes on. Internet doesn't search on these. You'll see all the different various colors and even shapes in stripes and musset out there if anybody wants to go spend an afternoon like going down the rabbit hole checking all these things out. Yeah and like you said that. I'd never really seen any yellow peonies until i saw some of your types and then a false some other people that had choral and like a deep deep red and like you said you're just fascinated with all the colors that you can have with the peonies and all that hybrids. Do you have a favorite among those give you those of probably the one of the first intersectional yellow was caught bar. That were very popular. We have run out of the building. The office each spring nervous in full bloom. People come in and wanna know what that plant is usually surprised to find out that it's actually any because it has very large flowers on it. It's a beautiful plant bellen problem with miss. They don't win long enough you know. They blew once a year and then they're gone but absolutely gorgeous. But i have a lot of varieties that i like and maybe a few minutes. We talk about specific brise. I'll go to a little rundown of some of the ones that really liked the most. If anyone wants look those that see what they actually look like. Yeah yeah we'll have to take on that now. The reason i asked you to come on his that falls a really good time to look at planting peonies but win actually is the best time to plant peonies in when we're looking at pointing where's that mesh location for planting are peonies. Okay late summer and into fall is going to be your best time to plant your peonies. Believe it or not sometimes. Starting in mid to late august we could start moving these because most of these plants. The herbaceous now. I'm talking about right now. Not the tree but the intersection on herbaceous could move. Those starting in mid august always have been to october. If you're gonna need to move your tree in his deathly gonna up in october and let them go dormant. i because member. They're like shrub. They're not like a your regular radio with fruits that were keeping the roots allow. Where stems lot. So it's kind of two times there but herbaceous intersectional will will start mid august. Go up into late. October with the woodies or the tree. Any definitely wait until the end of october. Maybe i november to dig does up and with the herbaceous and the intersectional. You're gonna lose some routes you maybe need really long back a little bit. You've ever bought those herbaceous types. You know that they a lotta towns. Have those routes trims and you can do some of that. He didn't get every bit of that route with it. But if the more you get the better and then with the tree. Pennies deathly bound each. Try to get every bit of root system that you can get with that plant just to help that woody tissue. That's over winter. Actually make exactly now. Is there a difference on a you. Were talking about all the different types in wins the best ideal time for planting those. Is there a good location or is it the same for all or is it a little bit. Different course was no. It's not the same for all the herbaceous and intersectional in his deathly want to be in full sun. Full sons is more than five hours of direct sunlight. Maybe even six to seven if you can get it on those because especially in the spring before the foolish gets ready. He won't be you know by late summer. The villages prevent shape which needed. Leave it up and let it bake as much food as it can. They're going to need full sun. But now you're tree peonies. They will appreciate some afternoon shade so if you can give them four or five hours only morning sun and then give them that late afternoon shade. They're going to be a lot happier girl lot taller. And you're gonna get a lot more life of those blurbs on those those blooms in seoul sun and wind on those streep guineas don't last very long or near as long as herbaceous. Intersections does so bow means. Make sure if you can't remember trees give them a little bit afternoon shade. They are quite expensive. If you bought some of these some herbaceous and intersectional are too especially the newer varieties but definitely want to get him in the rice. Bought right location to make sure you get that established you get along lifespan out of it right right now. What about the soil tight as suspect you're probably gonna say Does matter with a lot of as bet. Is there any specific things. We need to know about the ideal soil. Yes there isn't it. These are these are not nearly as picky about soil as some of our plants would be you know. They don't have to have an exact ph or someplace. Say the or something like that and it needs a low ph ph twenty six point five and seven most of central kentucky. I know you're down in bowling green. Even though that's considered a west some people said that kind of middle states aleksei central that. Yeah there you go. That's yeah that's not. That's not west as far as the but six point five to seven in the. I'm assuming down there that you probably naturally around net. It is here because we have a lot of limestone at our soil's here so keeps that p. h. in between is slightly acidic. But if you don't have that you can amend that just makes you can get a sole test and you can do that your extension office. I know most extension office now. It's free or relatively free. So england listening. Just check with your local office. As far as that one thing they do have to have is good drainage they will not stand to have a a root system because they'll get robots die or especially in the wintertime. You do wanna work. You're so deeply for these though. Don't just go out and just dig a little home. Stick them in because these plants are going to be there for one hundred years more most these if something's not dug him up promote them down multiple times. They're going to outlive us. Giving a good location. So make sure you do amendment that soil deeply. If you've got heavy clay soil you're definitely gonna loosen that up with its much compost as you can get in there. Loose-knit up bellevue big keys to it. Other things that you may consider on finding these is make sure that you dig a hole. That's maybe two to three times as deep as that route is and you're not gonna depend on that date. Obviously but you wanna feel the bottom of that whole with a little extra compost in the bottle in mix in a little bit of fertilizer. Maybe even maybe one to one and a half cups of super phosphate. Maybe even a quarter of coverages triple ten something like that in the very bottom of that you're gonna put the fill soil. That came out back in that. So when you actually print your danny your opinion rich not going to be in that last soil yet. They're going to have to grow into it and that's what we want. Is this plant to go deep in searching for that those nutrients and so that's going to be the key to these now as far as planning debt. That's they'll be an issue based on what types of your saying if you're planting a herbaceous or intersectional you're gonna wanna just put that those little is you'll see that by the roots are deep those up. You'll see. the little pinkish is original our next year. Buds are reform. Bill you wanna plant those is about one to two inches below the sole serfs. Don't go any deeper than that to date. You won't get any bloom out of these plants for of number of years. If i ever but don't go too shallow because you wanna make sure that they're just under that soul surfer so they're protected from our some of our winter weather. I know around we anymore. Don't know what type of winter we're gonna have may have co. we may have were just wanted to inches in. That's deep enough is as deep as on with those us now with your tree paintings. Most of those are actually breasted. So when you buy one you're gonna get what's herbaceous route. And then you're gonna have a woody stem coming off of that. Well that would he stand where it meets that. Herbaceous route is the grass. You'd causes lot faster to get these grafted onto a herbaceous brute which is a more aggressive roots in quicker to take off in what reading actual treatment so they graft those europe but that graft union remember that what he stood meets that route four to six inches below the soil surface. Was we wanna make sure that that does not freeze out because of that freezes out our plants. We'll have that it's like planning alberti. Rose it's crafted. You wanna make sure you take that route ball without ones that solves dismiss loeser and you're going to have probably four to six inches of what he still buried under the soil on. And then maybe another five or six sticking out which is going to be our growth point. Once that's going to do is gonna make sure graft unionists protected and also that top of that plant works freeze off. We've got buds underneath the sole service that are protected then can break that way with won't lose that plant you know even if we had a freak snowstorm or ice storm broke the whole top of that plan. All we've got some buds underground that can allow that magic robot great. And i'm glad that you kinda covered the different types as especially when you're getting that planning site ready in the correct way to planet now dennis. They're eating secrets or maybe tips to come to know. Especially when you're caring for some of the different peony types you definitely were. Make sure you keep an eye out for a few things first of all once you plant these you want to make sure that you weigh about a month after least maybe even later in. What's up tommy. You're you plant these but you wanna let that sold temperature get cold. We put mulch down. That's going to ensure your dormancy so these newly planted plant so it may be even after thanksgiving close to christmas whenever you want. Let's monetary on these definitely. Do put mulch around these because you don't want to go through the winner with these newly plants with that sore freezing following in the postal service anyway could push out but you want to make sure that seoul serves gets called to keep in dormancy other things during the growing season. Is that first season by not going to be a lot but if we have a severe drought that first season or two. You're gonna need to water these. After that. they're ready hardy. They go through a lot of turmoil after that because they do develop rewards root systems over several years and it takes them about three years to get to full size. It's a herbaceous in the ito's now the tree panic. Take ten twenty years to get full-sized there are a lot slower growing and they do make a bigger plant now. The thing is keep an eye out most of the time. We don't have many varmints that bala these but you could have especially on the woody types you could have some rabbit damage. Sometimes during the winter they dumped doing just nip things off because they're under sharp teeth or what they're doing but you may wanna put somebody around that tree guinea to make sure that doesn't happen is you. Don't want to spend eighty or a hundred dollars for plant. It tipped off at the soil surface. It's first season exactly. We know we don't want ravitz to really get mentioned anything if we can keep from it so that's a good tip that you have there now. Some of the peonies maybe more of the herbaceous but it could also happen with it. The tree in the intersectional peonies to do they really need much support. I don't know if they really need it much. Pointing bit lighter on what they need. Any kind of support to help held up as blames. That depends more on the variety. Anything else generally the tree is don't be much or they growed slow up. Netflix stems. Now the herbaceous in ito's might i would tend to go ahead and have sport ready or even go ahead and put some of those little wire cages that they make that they grow up through just to hold them up. There are a lot of the newer hybrid varieties out. There are a lot sturdier. Their stems are lot sicker in there. Actually branch for the landscape industry as opposed to the cups. Our industry allow the oath fridays. In the ones that you see at owed homesteads in you know. They've been there for fifty one hundred years. Those are all bread. Believe it or not all but most of them were bred in the late eighteen hundreds up into to the mid nine hundred numbers for the cut flower industry so they were read to have long skinny stamps that they could use those for cut flowers. They grew fun our landscapes but that's the reason they tend to flop forever. They it rains on them or we have win things that you know. It's just because they were bred for our not for our landscape. But now the new varieties out there get some of those bay stand up shorter. That fatter stems sticker spins and they they sit white easy. Some of that's gonna be trial and error on the garner's far figure out which they have. I mean i could recommend some bodies that i know we'll and some that i know that are gonna stand up pretty good. It's just depends on which when you grow in which what they've been actually bred to exactly help. You does Decisions for sure. Now on the mall that you mentioned disalow little bit ago. How much much do you need to put down. After it's kind of you know gotten really really cold outside is there. A certain kind of there is a ballpark anum. The say about three to four inches. Okay don't need any more than that. But you'd want enough much to keep be soil from evening and during the growing seasons you know keep weeds down conserve moisture. Don't go any deeper than that. They'll the peonies them right up through but there's no need so that when you use that muslim various exactly is not needed in other areas of our garden and landscape. Now if somebody wanted to learn a little bit more about growing peonies is there like a great publication or is there a good resource that you found that works really good especially about now in all the things that you've covered today that they might need to teach eat on that. There's a cheat sheet. I mean i've got a powerpoint on it that i'd be happy to send it out or a blow to you thank you. That's not a problem that's got pretty much. The same information minute. There is a peony society though in there is for every benched about but they have some really great information there and they have all the peonies that are on the market that are are named on there and you can go through all those and that's just going to give you some good information or some you know some some basic go look and even some other companies. Thanks that you can go check out. There are some really good commercial kinney rowers out there and a lot of them are more nights but they do hybridize and all that stuff too so some of those are really nice to go check out as well so if you get the opportunity to get out and about maybe this fall you might want to check out some of those resources or like you said call on your extension office to find out more if you to go out and just see some really good tree panties in the spring ugo gardens in logo is actually gonna be a. I want to say. I don't want to speak abbott. I think it's the largest collection of tree peonies in the united states where it's going to be. They have a lot of really nice of you. Might you know that's relatively close our. I guess it's not that close bowling green kentucky for the state of kentucky. So you know you can date drip or van. You wanted but that is a really nice resource. It's pretty pretty close to home in there. There are some other growers out there but ten guards are always going to be good for any of these types of things you want to see. Some of these plants already maturing growing guards. I will talk about a few rods. That i really like and you know some of these are our common some not but as far as the tree panties. I don't have many of those very many usually because the share price of them and they take a little time to mature but a few of these that are just graders there's one called sleight of trains. Which is a large white opinions. Really nice by low. This is nice. Icy heart is another one. It's really of eight for more of a maroon center and it's it's it's really good tree pani. As far as the inner sexual goes absolutely. Everybody should have a bar zella in their collection. It's the yellow the one of the first yet the most popular one still. There's another looks very similar. That remiss prairie charm. And sometimes you can get these find deals on. These intersectional is used to be very expensive. They're still pretty expensive. But they've done some issue culture on these speed seventies along get more market which is jumped advice on. Somebody's another one intersection. It's my one of my absolutely favorites. Try their villas four louise. It's kind of english color with that. Kind of maroon senator. It's really nice. I haven't done here. i can't hardly ever say the name of it. Just because it's scrimp diddy anxious display that at the sink about it before i statements are really pretty one too that there's a of out there though. And then we have the herbaceous which are the type that we're used to usually growing on the ground. Cheer up back in the spring with new shoots and mood flowers. These are newer varieties. Some of these still need to have some support but coral sunset is really nice for him is looking for four. Oh one as a large blend. Monnet snowden paul quarrel hawaii. That's nice when one of my favorites that was spotted o'hare it is a ranch semi doubled. Semisi will harry will say that it stands up on its own in wind and rain and the flowers start out read and it kind of fade to pink color for they dropped. So you'll have in right on the same plant the same time you don't have to worry about staking that plan if you like something with a stripe to this candy. Strike is one. That is white reg striked when something different and then lemon shift on another one of my absolute favorites is a herbaceous. But it's a light yellow. it's one of the first one is fully herbaceous that has that yellow coloring so that was another nice one that one was very expensive. I think it's come down to maybe less than one hundred dollars was three hundred just a few years ago but it is a nice plant is a slow grower. That's five segments along for vice Slow bro so the owner types. All these airlines. These are the ones that the original allow. These were the originals that in france and in europe in rome for cut flowers in got over the united states made no plan them out as a perennial is festive. A maxima is by all time. Favorite of any fanny in. It's not gonna cost you normally but it is a double white with a little red out of a little red center to it just a little brush rate in the middle of it. It always reminds me like an ice cream sunday. That was my absolute favorite. Was one that my grandmother always had ruin cider house. I remember that. Plant as far back as i can remember so. That's my absolute favorite. Sarah bernhardt is a peak. Airland that you'll see a lot of the old home stance if you see a pink peony lemon there. It's going to be served our heart. It's a great roar. it gets pretty tall. Nestle's so it's all these airlines are going to need or orig- harms another one of those. That was one of my grandmother's favorites. I love to. It's probably still the best double rental mark today. As far as i'm concerned i've had several different types but that's still a really really good. One shirley temples a nice light peak large flour and then henry sass is a white solid it white no red. No other color attitude. It's henry sass is a solid white so those are just a quick rundown and now that fema is listening. This as just the podcast. Many to pullover on the side of the road in a write these down our or wait do it again to write some of those down. Look them up the nice. Just a few varieties new all. There's absolutely hundreds thousands of the market. Right now oh my check out. He said lemon chiffon that does sound chairs beautiful and it's a double light yellow. It's really pretty. It's just slow grower in expensive to get one but when you get it you're gonna have you know for the rest of your life so just been a really good spot. Make sure you give her some extra. Yeah yeah a may not soil and implant it where it needs to be. Give it what it needs. And we'll also try to post some of these you mentioned in the show notes so they wanted to check it out. They can also go there buddy midge in a couple of disease problems that you might have on your peonies. Were those boy. Tried his blights. If you've got a penny that you've had for years and it starts to grow in the u. Gets the buds form and then they never open they just kinda rot fall off or drought. That's revolt tried to supply a couple of things you can do to limit. That one is in the fall. Make sure you the sanitation in your guards all that owed foliage out of there of so you'll get all that those four out of there in the next is you're gonna need to do a fungicide spray in the spring when the plants probably about seven eight inches tall or even a little bit taller. New start to see maybe a but for me go ahead and do a fund your side spray with that you can use makers af or daca neo which is for falah neil. Those are just protected. Some you can kill those sports. They actually attacked. But midway you'll get your flowers to open but again sanitation is going to be a really big key to that. The other thing that you might have on these especially certain varieties and i can tell you. Some of them are worse than others is powdery. Mildew usually that's not something that we need to worry too much bad because usually hits late enough in the summer that these plants are pretty ratty by the end in their. You know they've enough food but if we do have that then you may need to hit that with some fun decide like immune knocks or if you've got some flurries thirty three thirty six. You can that the most time you're not going to have to worry too much about that and we're going to get some other leaf spots banks during the growing season but generally that's nothing to worry about because that has already made all the food it needs for the for the next season in just from to deal with some made me some ready looking foliage which british that of ruin peony. So what do you do. Limit that ready foolish than some other. Free meals around that that will grow up next to that and maybe of hot some of that ugly voltage and and i'm glad that you mentioned the two diseases you might run into because those are both pretty common and you covered how to take care of those really well on a lot of banks hell. Yeah yeah it sounds like when you know someone you can say it others now. Is there anything else she wanted to cover before we clouds. No i think that's it. "Welcome to September 24th, 2021 on the national day calendar. Today we celebrate perfect punctuation and dramatic desserts. When was the last time you fell in love with coffee? Visit David's roasting dot com to try their award winning blends, roasted to order and ship to your door, because everyone deserves to fall in love with coffee this fresh. David's roasting dot com. Boutique coffee without all the hype. To my parents, I ran and God. Anna, why are you yelling? I'm just reading the script. Maybe you should dial down the exclamation point. Okay, that's hilarious, marlowe. You know it's national punctuation day, and that first sentence opens up a big debate about using the Oxford comma. Oh yeah, I'm in on that debate. I don't use the last comma in this series before the word and. Yeah, neither do I, but defenders of the Oxford comma will cite this sentence as an argument that the last comma before and is needed to my parents Ayn Rand and God so that the reader knows I'm dedicating this to three separate people and not to my parents who happen to be Ayn Rand and God. Oh, that's way too nerdy for me. Way too nerdy. Okay, whatever. Nothing says celebration like the word jubilee. But how did this word get attached to cherries and set on fire for dessert? For that story, we look to the renowned chef agusta fier. In honor of Queen Victoria's jubilee event, the chef combined her love of cherries with a simple syrup and warm brandy, which he lit on fire for a dramatic finish. It turns out that escoffier has a knack for making ladies feel special. He designed the dessert, peach melba for Nellie melba, and a macaron for Sarah Bernhardt, burying her name. On national cherries jubilee day, celebrates something special with a flaming dessert that has passion written all over it. Ah, the way to a woman's heart. It's through fire? Dessert. Oh, yes. I thought it was 'cause he's French. Probably that helped. Hey, tomorrow, it's national comic book day. I might break out a comic book or two. Good idea, John. I managed to fear. I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we celebrate every day. See you tomorrow.

"Roseanne bernard was a french actress born in eighteen. Forty four although. She changed her name for the stage when she was around eighteen years old. Her mother was a courtesan with many powerful clients. Such as dukes politicians and other high powered individuals bernhardt took to the theatrical lifestyle. From a young age her mother sent her to boarding school when she was seven. It was there that she starred in her first play. She took on the role of a fairy queen. Who dies a chance for her to embrace her dramatic side three years later. She began attending a convent school in site again performing in theatrical productions she even considered becoming a nun for a short time until her father's death in eighteen fifty nine at the suggestion of one of her mother's clients bernhardt pursued acting more seriously. This surprised her as she had never considered the theater as a career before over the years she studied with talented actors of time building up her theatrical skills. One of her first acting coaches was recommended to her by one of her mother's clients his name. By the way was alexandre dumas author of the count of monte cristo. With enough training. Sarah was able to reach the theater. Francois with whom she performed for a year. Although it was not meant to last she had invited her sister regina to join her in an important event in attendance. Was the theaters leading actress. Zehr natalie martell otherwise known as madame natalie. Regina accidentally stepped on madame natalie's gown which infuriated her madame. Natalie shoved regina backwards into a stone column and caused her to cut her forehead. Prompting sarah to step in on her behalf. She screamed at the older actress getting so heated that she slaps her in the face. Sarah was told to apologize then. She refused she. Had had enough of madame natalie and the theater francois and left the company shortly thereafter. It didn't impact her opportunities though. Bernhardt spent two years at another theater. The gymnasts after which he moved onto the odeon her career had quite the upward trajectory and facts with the actress going from minor roles to under study. All the way to the leading lady.

Dressed: The History of Fashion
Fashion & Film
"Episode actually has been on my mind since our very first season and it combines both my passion and my career because today we talk about fashion and film and we actually thought this was a particularly fitting episode with which to launch season three seeing as it's February. WNYC which is an eventful month for fashion in film. We are currently in the midst of course of the International Fashion Week Circuit and the Ninety Second Academy Awards Air. Just this is past Sunday February ninth. Not that I've seen many of the Oscar contenders this year. But let's be honest. I mainly tune in to see what everyone is wearing. Yes exactly the same. Although I did watch rock man last night which I know I loved. You're so so on costumes. Were amazing. Customer agree on that yet and we actually got to see a couple of them in in person when we were in L. A.. Recently which was very cool but the Oscars is definitely one of fashion industries. Highlights of the year. You know. I think it's safe to say that. What celebrities as where to this star centered? Event is just as exciting as the awards. Show itself and I'm sure many of our listeners will be joining us in watching the pre show coverage where where we will get an up close and personal look at all the glamour shirt to be on display on this year's red carpets and speaking of red carpet April you and I both. It's had our very first red carpet experience last month when we attended the iheartradio podcast awards. Yes and I will have to. I have to say getting ready for that stuff. Takes a really long time. I had no idea. We're inheriting makeup literally. Our it was very fun. Yeah it it was very fun so you're going to hear a little bit more on our first fashion history mystery of the season where we talk about all things red carpet including our favorite picks from this year's red carpet and an interview with Bronwyn cosgrave. Who is the author of the book made for each other which is an in-depth behind the scenes? Look at the history the of red carpet fashion so the Academy Awards dates back all the way to the nineteen twenties but the first films are being made as far back as the eighteen ninety s so the movies being produced ladies for over one hundred and twenty years you know. I think we should probably preface this episode by saying this is only intended as an overview of very huge topic like Jain enormous topic. Yeah I mean it's so big that we've chosen to focus almost entirely on the relationship between fashion as as it relates to American Hollywood films and for the most part I mean there will be a few exceptions and even by narrowing our discussion. There are still so many fascinating winning stories and players involved with a subject that it is impossible to cover them all in one episode. And that is why we are bringing you to yes and as you said. Casas is a huge topic and there are many different angles which we could look at the intersections of fashion and film. Historically of course the most obvious one is the depiction of fashion in film and that is fashionable clothing as costume worn by characters in support of the visual narrative of any given plot and this fashionable clothing can be worn both in contemporary films. Those intended to be set within the time in which their audience are living now currently when interviewing them and also period films film set in the past so clothing and fashionable clothing at that is one of the most vital production elements in selling link any given period in history it is very central to the quote unquote look of a specific time and place and we have to give many a costume designer props further further historical accuracy over the years but April. I think you would agree that present day fashion is a pretty powerful force and even the best designers have been guilty of implementing unconsciously or not contemporary beauty and fashion aesthetics into their period costumes. So if you look at any number of the westerns from the nineteen sixties for instance instance set in the late nineteenth century. But I can't even tell you how many heating ladies in these films are costumed with bouffant hairstyles eyeliner. They're so good. You know not to mention that these electric colors of their bustle gowns so fashion in film and we're using the term film today because while the majority of the movies were talking about where filmed on film so fashion and film have been inextricably linked since the earliest days of cinema. The I motion picture films were produced at the end of the nineteenth century by the first decade of the twentieth film production had fast evolved into a mass entertainment industry tree. Hollywood obviously as we all know in Los Angeles California was epicenter and the home to over seventy studios and counting by nineteen fourteen and prior to the advent of film. Theatre was a hugely popular form of spectator entertainment. And it was thanks to this medium that that female audiences had long been accustomed to viewing their favorite theater actresses and the clothes they wore as the latest word and chic and and actresses wore high fashion on an off stage and we'll heralded as fashion icons in newspapers. Fashion Magazines and film would prove no different different with its bevy of Silverscreen starlets who would capture the admiration of millions of women audience goers all across the country so with the film industry fast on the rise in the early twentieth century. We see the debut of the first film Fan Magazines such as photo play and Motion Picture magazine. And both of these magazines presented actresses as this fashion trendsetters. And you WANNA go down a rabbit hole. You can go to media history project dot org forward slash fan magazines because they have a huge archive five of keyword searchable magazines on there. So have a blast so far but it will it will take up an entire afternoon. Photo play even had a regular column dedicated to fashion which often featured full-body photographs of actresses so as to best display their entire gowns printed in black can white though. These photographs were accompanied by text. That really detailed the gowns color and fabric for the enquiring reader actress Norma talmadge was featured so often in the fashion section in a photo play that she was even named fashion editor for a short time in nineteen twenty by emphasizing the dress and appearance of these early film stars. These he's magazines played a pivotal role in establishing film actresses as fashion icons. But you may be wondering who was dressing them today. We're all accustomed to the important role the costume designer and Costume Department and Film and Television Production. Obviously what would Miss Marvelous. Mrs Mazel be without Donna and her talented team of assistance. Cutters fitters Taylor shoppers. dyers agers the list. There are a lot the people helping out on those productions. Let's just say Oh. Yeah but actually in the earliest days of cinema. There was no such thing as a costume designer and thus no costume department dedicated educating to produce in costumes for a specific movie so according to costume designer and historian Deborah Landis in her book dressed century of Hollywood costume design. She's actually written quite extensively on the history of Hollywood design. So you're going to hear her name. Come up quite a bit so according to Deborah Producer Adolph Zuqar and director. D W Griffith were among the first to recognize the importance of and need for the professional costume designer. And this was in the nineteen ten's but we still do not see standardization cassation of the costume designer and department until the nineteen twenties so prior to this actors and actresses were largely expected to provide their own wardrobes for contemporary foams. With many I mean those who could actually afford it. I suppose many of these people work directly with their favorite fashion designers to create their specific onscreen. Looks for instance. Paul Poiret as you all know who we adore and love. He designed the period costumes for acclaimed actress. Sarah Bernhardt in the nineteen twelve French film. The loves of Queen Queen Elizabeth. It does not surprise us at all. That far was among the very first fashion designers to embrace the new medium of film as a way to extend. His influence is an advertise his brand although he would never admit it. Of course big neither would contemporary lady Lucille Duff Gordon. Who designed the gallons for the leading ladies for over twenty films between Nineteen Fourteen and nineteen twenty two starting with the perils of Pauline starring? Pearl White I love that AH film And in April nineteen eighteen vote dedicated to page spread to Lucille designs for actress Clara Campbell Young and the Nineteen nineteen eighteen film. The reason why which was written by Lucille sister the famed novelist turned screenwriter. Eleanor Glynn thanks to there's well known collaborations nations. I mean. Is it any wonder that Motion Picture magazine declared that quote motion picture actresses where the latest modes and they declared this in its September nineteen fourteen issue. The article goes on to say that quote women revel in the style of gown much better in the picture show than she can in the pages of some fashion journal but this brings up a very very interesting point April because we all know how quickly fashion can change and what was in fashion when you're designing and then shooting a film while it might have changed I by the time. The film was released six months to a year later. Case in point Lucille's designs for Clara in the reason why might have been presented by vogue as the latest fashions nineteen eighteen. But I know at least one of those designs came straight from her nineteen seventeen collections. Clair West one of the very first screen credited costume designers address address. This very issue in an interview with women's wear daily in December nineteen nineteen according to her fashionable film costumes reproduced thanks to new fashion forecasting which is fascinating. She goes on to say quote. It is particularly difficult to dress characters for the screen when one considers that the close not only must be up to date but they must be several months head of style and you know by designing for the future Claire and other costume designers designers of this time really consider themselves both costume and fashion desires case in point one month prior women's wear daily had interviewed West about the influence silence of Hollywood on fashion in an article titled Motion Pictures To Create New Fashion Center and at the time West was under a seven year contract with the picture and distribution distrubution company. lasky famous players company. Soon to be known as a name. Some of you may recognize paramount pictures quote as for the role which motion pictures plays plays and fashion resort. In Miss West opinion there is no limit West oversaw the designing and making of costumes for the entire film company. So this is no oh small order and she did this in a three story building devoted entirely to costume production just to give you an idea of the size of this costume. Department West fulltime fulltime team consisted of sixty five women including five flower makers ten designers. Numerous seamstresses to Taylor's staff hairdressers. There's a number of assistance quote in this way said West. We have the ideal conditions under which fashions should be created and created. Is the keyword right here because they were not buying you know off the rat clothing cast for both period and contemporary films. The majority of the clothes seen on the stars in Hollywood films were produced made to measure for them in
